Possible to use a cheap Chinese Android smartphone as a development board? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

It's possible to buy cheap Chinese mobile phones based on the MediaTek MT6739. I believe there are custom Android ROMs that will work on these phones if rooted. Would it be possible to bypass Android and just run a stripped Linux kernel with only basic functionality on such a rooted phone? Why even need Android at all if the chipset is supported by the kernel and all I want is say, display and networking? Custom bootloaders are certainly capable of taking input and displaying stuff on the screen, and I'm not sure those are full Android installs. Is this possible?

What to do with my old phones?

Hello all,
I have few old android phones which I would like to transform to something useful. I have a side project where I can use an old phone to register user action on the "field". I need a simplest android version which can run my application (5-8 buttons with actions) and nothing else. My application need to be automatically started after reboot/turn on and user can't have access to anything else. I don't need phone, I just need WiFi and NFC (phones have NFC). And maybe Bluetooth.
So, I need to build that ROM and upload to my phone(s).
Any ideas, suggestions, experiences would be appreciated.
Thank You all in advance.
Best regards
Alex

Custom ROM on Unihertz Jelly Pro Phone

I have a Unihertz Jelly Pro (https://www.unihertz.com/products/jelly-pro). I'd like to get some sort of custom ROM on here because I want max battery life and I don't trust sketchy Chinese companies. Anyone on here ever used any custom ROM on this particular phone? Any advice how to proceed here?

Im looking for someone to upgrade the android version on a old phone. It is a Ecom Smartex 01. This phone is very similar to the Sonim XP7 aka 7700. Currently it is running 4.4.4. Cheap Chinese Tablet

I was given a cheapie Chinese tablet and it’s absolutely dumbfounding. The serial number is 0123456789ABCD (not joking), it claims it’s Android 7 and 116GB. The model number claims just “T101”. Half the OS is in Chinese. So my question is, is there any way to root this thing and put an English rom on it?
