General Product Review | OPPO Reno8 5G | OPPO Ambassador (Part 1) - OPPO Reno8 (Reno 8)

Hello everyone,
I would like to contribute to this forum by presenting my review on OPPO Reno8 5G that I have been using for 2 weeks now. Reno8 would be my first OPPO product that i use. A little bit about me is that i am a phone photographer who likes to shoot mainly in cityscape and architecture photography and i post my work in Instagram (@Redribbon26). i am very excited when i have the chance to test out Reno8 camera as part of being OPPO Ambassador.
The review would cover these areas which all of them comes from my experience using the phone.
1. Built Quality & Design
2. Phone Performance & Battery
3. Best ColorOS Features
4. Camera (part 1 & Part 2)
And i will share my conclusion about this phone as well.
Let's start with what's in the box for OPPO Reno8 5G. As you can see from the picture, it consists of:
1. The phone unit
2. 80W charger & USB-C cable
3. Sim ejector tool
4. Flexible transparent protective case
5. Guide on setup and safety
It is nice that the phone comes with a screen protector & protector case. This has saved me time and money to buy the basic accessories to protect my phone.

1. Built Quality & Design
[Color] Reno8 5G comes in 2 colors, Shimmer Black and Shimmer Gold. I received the Shimmer Gold, and the color really lives up to its name – shimmer and glow! The glow is the first thing that grabs my attention and I really love on how the back cover changes colors when it hits by lights.
Talking about first impression on physical appearance – trendy, eye-catching, and attractive. The matte-silver color for the side panel provides good color combination on the overall looks.
[Texture] the back panel surface is smooth to the touch, and it hides fingerprints and smudges well. It means i don’t need to clean it so often. I like it.
[Design] It looks sleek and minimalistic. The phone is slim, side buttons are flat with round edges and that shape is repeated on the bottom for speaker/microphone and charging port. Neat!
Up front, the camera is located at the corner top left. It won’t disturb the viewing experience. On the back, the triple camera setup is molded into the panel with protrusion which has smooth edges, thanks to the curve.
It feels easy to hold this phone. Ergonomic and lightweight. It has a nice grip and is comfortable to use single-handedly.
2. Phone Performance & Battery
[Performance] I take photos (sometimes videos), and edit the result using the phone. I have no complaints so far. It has been satisfactory. No lags, or app crash. The facts that Reno8 5G has 6.4 inch AMOLED display with FHD resolution, 8-bit color depth and 90Hz refresh rate have given me a smooth experience, especially during editing. I don’t really play mobile games, but I do watch movies from Netflix and Disney+. I don’t experience any lags.
[Battery] OPPO Reno8 5G comes with superfast 80W SUPERVOOC charger. Charging from 50% to 100% in 18 minutes. I did test that when I received the phone.
The phone has longer battery life. A full charge could last around 1.5 days. I am not a hardcore phone user, my typical daily usage includes texting, browsing products online, social media, checking emails, and few photo editing that usually consume battery more, as I need to set the screen at least at 75% brightness, in some instances, up to 100%. If there is any photo/video taking session, the battery could last almost a day.
3. Best ColorOS Features
Let's go to Part 2

Smartphone (back) covers Materials, wich you prefer?

It's an indisputable fact that the smartphones have too much similarities from one another nowadays. In the era of Symbian OS, there were lots of designs like, flip phones, slide phones, slim phones etc. As the physical keyboards are almost extinct, slim design become the mainstream style. Âll Smartphone makers are trying to differentiate their product by adding characteristics on the engineering design.
Speaking of the engineering design, materials are essential parts since they basically determine the using experience and hand feeling of the phones. Luckily, we have a huge variety of choices on the back cover materials. I am going to list four popular back cover materials and compare the pros & cons of each material.
Leather:
Pros: Stylish, luxury,
Cons: Bad stain resistance, hard to clean, corrosion
Examples: LG G4, Uhance

Rubber:
Pros: Durable, protective, available in a wide range of colors, easy to clean.
Cons: Feel cheap,
Examples: Moto X style
Metal:
Pros: Stylish and elegant, comfortable feeling
Cons: Bad signal, scratches, high cost due to the low yield rate
Examples: HTC One (M9), iPhone 6S, Oukitel K6000
Plastic:
Pros: Mature craftsmanship, low cost, easy to change
Cons: Cheap feeling
Examples: Samsung S5, Elephone P8000
Wood:
Pros: Very durable, irreplaceable look
Cons: High cost, ugly to some people, unpleasant hand feeling
Examples: Moto X 2014, OnePlus 2
Glass:
Pros: Fine look, simple craftsmanship
Cons: Fragile, fingerprint stains
Examples: Oneplus X, Oppo R1
I only listed some back cover materials, there are more materials with different textures.
What is your favorite?
Doesn't matter either way.
It doesn't quite matter what you prefer or looks good, we all know everyone's going to get a big bulk cheap plastic phone case to stick their new prized phone in anyway!
That's what always makes me laugh about iPhone uses ....ah my phone is so pretty...and then wrapped in more plastic that a pallet load of wrapped plastic ))

[Mi 9 vs Honor 20 Pro] Night Photography Comparison Test Shoutout

The Mi 9 delivers authentic colors and terrific long-range performance, but the Honor 20 Pro's paradigm-shifting Night mode is more versatile and aesthetic.
Even with the tremendous advances in smartphone photography, clear night photos remain the exception, not the rule. At close range, we're treated to blinding glares and blurry light columns, which provide the effect of cheap studio lighting. At long range, a brilliant cityscape is often reduced to a distant haze.
That's why it was such a joy to play around with the Mi 9 and Honor 20 Pro. Both phones perform admirably, taking bright and sharp night photos, but while the Honor 20 Pro features sterling performance in every conceivable low-light environment, the Mi 9 has a few conspicuous flaws that limit its versatility in close range shots. I'd recommend either model for photography enthusiasts, and reserve high praise for the Honor 20 Pro.
Distance Shots
First, a look at some long-range shots. Both pictures below are stunning, the kind you'd happily post on Instagram if you're exploring a new city after dark.

On a more subjective note, I prefer the landscape colors on the Honor 20 Pro. The colors on the new Xiaomi model meet the naked eye test, and are actually more authentic. The sky was that shade of gray-blue, not the Starry Night-reminiscent deep blue in the Honor phone shot, and the bridge was a duller orange-gold as seen in the Mi 9 photo.
Van Gogh took some liberties with the night sky, and so does the Honor 20 Pro, in order to create a richer visual tapestry. This is a philosophical difference. There's something to be said for an honest reproduction of reality. Nonetheless, I'd guess that most users are like me, and prefer impressive night photos to completely realistic ones. We have 16 waking hours a day to view the world as is; pictures are by their nature, moments in time that are intended to dazzle.
Portrait Shots
Details are also better retained by the Honor 20 Pro, and this becomes obvious when a night portrait shot is taken. Foreground object recognition and color reproduction are consistently superior on the Honor 20 Pro, though they are still quite good on the Mi 9.
Color is the greatest area of discrepancy. The red and blue railing leaps off the screen in the Honor shot, the light reflections on the water are fuller colors, and the grass below me can be identified as green. By contrast, in the Xiaomi shot, the railing is duller, reflections much less vibrant, and the grass is barely discernible.
One area that both cameras could improve on is the HDR portrait effect, which is just a bit too dramatic in both shots. My profile is quite conspicuous against the background, with a quasi-photoshopped effect, but that's I guess a small price to pay for colorful portrait shots at night.
The starkest difference occurs when direct lighting intrudes on a night scene. The pictures speak for themselves.
There you have it. Two phones, and two night modes: one extraordinary, and the other merely excellent. It didn't take too long to discover that, because as the poem goes, the night has a thousand eyes.

Hey OPPO Humans,
Finally OPPO launched The Portrait Expert, the Reno8 Series on July 18. It's the perfect package in terms of Performance, Cameras, Design, Battery and much more. In this thread, I'll be talking about the premium design & display that we get on OPPO Reno8 5G. So without any further ado, let's get started!
DESIGN
OPPO has been a consistent leader in Technology & Innovation. Experience the premium feel in your hands with the all-new OPPO Reno8 5G that comes in two colors, Shimmer Gold & Shimmer Black.
Shimmer Gold which gives of extraordinary gradient visual effects while staying fingerprint resistant, so just Gold for it. While the Shimmer Black, Black out the rest together.
About Streamlined Unibody Design
After several generations of product iterations, the Reno series has now grown. In terms of catching the user's eyes, they are also constantly polishing the design. Reno has a very outstanding appearance in all generations. In the previous generation, they've used LDI (Laser Direct Imaging) processing on the OPPO Reno7 Series. Exquisitely crafted for a delicate touch, it’s chiseled with over 1.2 million micro-rasters reminiscent of shooting stars.
Like the Reno8 Pro, the Reno8 5G is also equipped with Streamlined Unibody design which enhanced by iconic OPPO Glow. This makes the overall feeling very different. The new Reno8 Series is more intellectual and elegant. The camera design of the OPPO Reno8 series is the same as that of the Find X5 series.
To ensure a smooth transition between camera setup & back cover OPPO uses a high temperature forging and high pressure process to make this design. The raised edge of the camera module forms a 75° arc, and it is polished several times to make it more beautiful, smooth, premium & eye-catchy.
Although this generation of Reno has switched to a new design, many places are still familiar to us. For example, the green groove is still retained in the center of the power button.
Slim & Light
Even after all this complicated process, the company has maintained the form factor well. It weighs 179g and is only 7.67mm thick. This gives a better grip and extremely comfortable to use.
DISPLAY
In terms of display, it features a 6.43" FHD+ AMOLED screen with a resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels and delivers screen-to-body ratio of 90.8%.
With a 90Hz refresh rate display ensure that you don't have any lag or shuttering. Surely it delivers an ultra-smooth visual and gaming experience. Also touch sampling rate of 180Hz, ensures a smooth scrolling experience.
It also offers support for HDR10+, Netflix HD along with Amazon Prime Video HD certifications. The Reno8 5G also has the SGS eye care display certification which effectively reduces blue light and guards your eyes against fatigue.
It can reach peak brightness of 800nits in sunlight mode, ensuring a clearly visible display always. The display is also Protected by a Corning Gorilla Glass 5.
To create a best viewing experience it has O1 Ultra Vision Engine, which uses AI deep learning to improve every frame of your video. Improved clarity and colour to create a viewing experience you’ll never get tired of. It make every video your best video.
For security, In-display fingerprint scanner provided which is fast as Lightning. Only 0.256 seconds needed to unlock became 71% faster.
That's all for the Design & Display of OPPO Reno8 5G.

General OPPO Reno8 product review

Product review of Oppo Reno8
I’ve been using the Oppo Reno8 for 2 weeks and these are my impressions.
I got the phone in Shimmer Gold and I must say that this is the most beautiful phone colour. As the name suggests, the phone literally shimmers in the light. At different angles, the surface of the phone reflects light differently and appears in rainbow colours. On top of it, it is fingerprint resistant. In fact, I was reluctant to put on a phone case. Fortunately, the phone comes with a clear phone cover with a cut out for the camera, included in the box! Here are some images of the beautiful phone:

Weighing only 179g, with a large screen size of 6.4 inches, I could watch videos on the move while holding my phone comfortably. The colours were also nice and vibrant, with a screen resolution of 2400 X 1080 pixels. I often edit photos on my phone, so the range of colours displayed is really important for me.
The operating system is ColorOS 12.1. A super cool function I discovered the phone had was Air Gestures. This function allows you to scroll, answer phone calls or play/ pause videos without touching the phone. I tried it out while trying to follow a video to cook a new dish and it was super convenient. I could easily pause and play the video when I needed more time for any step without touching the phone (and making it oily or covered with flour!)
For a photographer, the cameras on the phone are crucial. Oppo Reno8 features the Dual Sony Flagship Sensors. There are 3 rear cameras. The specs of the main camera are 50MP, 1/1.56"; f/1.8; FOV 86°; 7P lens; AF. The specs of the Macro camera are FOV 89°; 3P lens; FF and the specs for the wide-angle camera are f/2.2; FOV 112°; 5P lens; FF. Specs for the front camera are 32MP, 1/2.74"; f/2.4; 32MP (f/2.4); FOV 85°; lens: 5P, FF. I was impressed by the quality of the selfie camera due to the high resolution. It also has some “beautifying” effects which makes me look good even when I didn’t have time to put on any make-up!
I put the cameras to the test the moment I unboxed it. One known limitations of phone cameras is the ability to function in low light settings and this was what I tested out. You can check out my unboxing video to see how it performed. I then tested taking photos at 1 location using the default “photo” mode, the “night” mode and also the “pro” mode. I often use the pro mode when I want to control the iso and exposure time but I was curious to see how the night mode performed for users who may not be comfortable with using the pro mode.
The subject I chose was the rain vortex at Jewel, Changi Airport. F 1.8 and 5.42mm was used for all 3 photos, using the main camera.
The 1st photo was taken using default settings, iso was 3609 and exposure 1/100sec.
The 2nd photo was taken using night mode. I was prompted to hold the phone steady. The iso was reduced to 967 and exposure time increased to 1/20 sec. Note that if you do not hold the phone steady, the image will be blurred.
The 3rd photo was taken using pro mode, I set the iso at 100, the minimum (to decrease noise), and exposure 1/3 sec, the longest possible without having over-exposed areas (to create the silky water effect).
Comparing the 3 photos (unedited, straight out of phone), you can see that the pro mode was sharpest and had most silky water effect. The night mode is a good “in-between” for users who are not familiar with using pro mode. One limitation to note is that the pro mode can only be used with the main camera and not wide-angle camera.
I also took tested taking portraits at night using both the main camera and selfie camera. The subject appeared bright in spite of low ambient lighting. These are some of the shots.
11 minutes was all that was required for me to charge the phone up to 50% using the 80W SUPERVOOC charger included in the box. It sounded too good to be true until I tried it out for myself. The battery was super long lasting; I brought it out for an entire day taking photographs and uploading them to Instagram and there was still 50% left when I got home at night!
In conclusion, it was a beautiful phone with good screen resolution and battery life. I was pleased with the performance of the camera at night and surprised at how well the selfie camera performed. The price point is also very competitive. Give it a try and you might be impressed as well!
