Why are there so few apps available for Wear OS in Play Store?
In the origins of Wear OS, when it was still called Android Wear, between 2014 and 2017, hundreds of apps created for these watches were published in the Play Store, during that time and shortly after it was already evident that there was not much interest in the market for these watches, this was also coupled with the abandonment by Google of Wear OS that has maintained this little attention until almost the launch of Galaxy Watch 4, last year. After the app boom in the first 3 years, and due to this scenario, many app developers stopped publishing new apps and/or updating the ones that were already published. In addition, Google for some time is doing a purge of apps in the Play Store that they consider "bad" and that violate points in Google's policy (which is updated quite frequently), such as apps that ask for permissions that are not really necessary for the operation of the app, for example the call log or the location in the background. They are also removing apps that are obsolete because they have not been updated to an Android API level of the last 2 years, i.e. as of today all apps that point at most to Android 11 or lower will be hidden in Play Store searches. As new Android/Wear OS versions are released, the 2-year window will advance accordingly. They will actually only be hidden for new users of the app, as if you have ever installed it, you will still see it in the Play Store and can continue to use it. However, if you have never used the app that Google considers outdated, it will not appear in the Play Store when you search for it.I often read developers complaining about how hard it is for them to get Google to authorize the publication of their apps in the Play Store, and Google has started to impose a heavy hand in order to have apps with higher quality and safer for the user. Google is requiring developers to limit the use of permissions to those necessary to provide the features of their application. In addition, they have to explain in the app's "Data Security" section how sensitive user data is handled. Last year, they rejected or removed tens of thousands of apps on Android (many of them for Wear OS) that did not comply with Google's policies related to privacy and user data. All these causes cause that currently the number of apps available for Wear OS is very low, there are far fewer apps than in the first year of life of Wear OS, in fact, from November 1, 2022, there will be much less, as Google will make another purge against obsolete apps. Either for security reasons or for abandonment of the app developer that leaves them outdated.I don't know how many apps for Wear OS are currently in the Play Store, probably excluding Watch faces there will be less than 300 apps. Google publishes from time to time the number of apps hosted in the Play Store, but in a global way (it includes apps for Wear OS along with Android) so I think it is not possible to know with certain accuracy. Does anyone know how many there are currently for Wear OS?
Wear OS Apps Repository
The fact is that many apps that were available before are now gone, and as of November 1 much less, so I have created the following repository taking advantage of reliable servers in APKMirror, GitHub (from developer) or on my own server, Mega. The intention is to preserve those apps that are no longer hosted in the Play Store (or never were) and are still functional. This repository contains apps that:
Have been abandoned by their developer, but are still functional, for example, Telegram.
Have been created for Android. Normally, the interface of these apps is not perfectly adapted to the small size of the screen, but they still work, for example, Pulse Music.
They are not hosted on Play Store for different reasons, for example. OruxMaps.
They have not been updated for some time or violate some non-serious point of the policy, and Google has taken the determination to hide them for new users of the app, for example, Button Launcher.
They are not compatible with your watch, but are mostly functional, e.g. Feel The Wear.
Also, if any independent developer has their app outside the Play Store and wants me to post the download link in the repository to write a comment with the name of the app and download link.
Wear OS Apps Repository
How to install this app by sideload?
To send and install the applications on your watch, you can do it in several ways:
If you want to install from the phone, you can use the Wear Installer app, Bugjaeger Mobile ADB or Easy Fire Tools. In this link, extensive information about this and how to install with these tools.
If you want to install from a PC, you must do it through ADB commands. In this link, you can download Wear OS Tools, a tool for Windows that makes it easy to install apps from your PC.
Considerations
In order to install apps via sideload, you must enable "Debugging over Wi-Fi". On the watch, go to Settings > system > About and repeatedly tap "Build number" until you see a message that says 'You are now a developer'. Then go to Settings> Developer options and enable "ADB debugging" and "Debugging over Wi-Fi".
If you are also going to install from the PC, you must download and install ADB tools, such as ADB & Fastboot++.
In APKMirror, to download an app you must choose, in case there are several variants, the variant “armeabi-v7a". For DPI, choose "nodpi" variants.
The fact that an app has been removed from the Play Store, does not imply that it is a dangerous app, there are applications that offer a decent set of features and are totally innocent, but have been abandoned by their developers for whatever reason and Google fulfilling its policy of obsolete apps removed them from the Play Store.
If you have outdated apps installed on your watch (which of course are still useful for you) but unfortunately they are no longer in the Play Store, you can back up the APK files of the apps with WearOS Tools, like this you will not lose them if you reset the watch or change to a new watch. If any app of these characteristics is not in the repository, comment it here to upload it to the repository and preserve it.

New apps added:
Wear Documents
Wear Keyboard
Wear Photos
Wear Orbits
Speed Wear

Great project. How do you achieve Whatsapp functionality, taking calls on watch was only available for me in a few previous betas, now no more. I can send messages using Assistant in combination with Gboard though, via phone. Any other way? Could add this K-9 Mail variant

Thanks for pointing me to a link on your research re Whatsapp on WearOS. I have done much of the same, but with lesser success - subscription apps not an option though. I tried Leonard's WhatsappWebToGo on the GW4 with all permissions possible activated, but the app will not open, just shows a white screen. Do you have it running successfully, the 1.72 latest version? I tried it previously on my tablet successfully, but then saw that Whatsapp is now offering the same for tablets in latest betas.

Yes and quite surprised when I was able to run SD Maid and NetGuard No Root Firewall.
-- NetGuard requires scaling of the display in order to enable the firewall on the extreme far left corner.
-- Enabling NetGuard does not seem to stick because possibly, Wifi needs to be off on the watch for VPN.
-- Wear OS still needs to be able to communicate with the app on the phone over Bluetooth. Having a VPN might prohibit that.
-- There are some instances where I has to reboot Wear OS before I hit paydirt.
-- I'm certain that I'll attempt to see which app will stick on the Pixel Watch when the time comes.

By the nick I guess you are the developer of this app, in the repository only have room for apps that are not in the Play Store or if they are, because their apps are abandoned by the developer (in the case of this app, you updated it and uploaded it last week).
The repository is not oriented to advertise apps. I feel sorry for you. Nevertheless, thanks for developing on Wear OS.

Hello, it's been days since there was any news, this weekend I had time to test and analyze some apps.

Thanks for the contribution, however, the repository is not oriented to hang active apps in Play Store, only abandoned apps or if they are in Play store, but initially aimed at Android (but work well in Wear OS). It is a thread to preserve those apps that are no longer available.
Maybe we could create another thread to make a table of the apps that are in Play Store more prominent, it is a good way to discover new apps for Wear OS buried among hundreds of thousands for Android in the Play Store. We could make a table similar to the one in this thread.
What do you think of the idea?

I think I have explained myself wrong, I mean to review outstanding apps among thousands of apps in a table, in the same way that you have recommended those 2 apps because I guess you think they are outstanding among others.

[Q] Prevent certain Android OS functionality with an Android Shell app.?

Hi devs~
Please help...
With a shell /launcher app. or by using any other software In an wifi only Android tablet device, can you:
1. Hide the "Application icon" so as to prevent the user from going into the drawer showing all of the installed applications and
launching any one of the apps. including the play store app. ?
2. Hide the "pull down menu" (notification menu on the top of the screen)?
3. Prevent addition of more pages to the home screen (only one page exists i.e. the home screen page)?
Are the above technically possible and does the MADA or any other agreement for using or distributing an Android OS device prevent you from doing this?
Also, according to the below mentioned article, Android is an open source OS which anyone can use...
So, does this mean that you can use the Android and even change it so as to realize the above mentioned features without ever dealing with Google and that Google would not
have any problems?
Search for the following article in the Google search: "Debunking four myths about Android, Google, and open-source"
"What it all means in sum is that Android is indeed an open-source operating system and that anyone—yes, even you — can use it as the basis for their own devices, applications, and services. As such, it's more open than Apple or Microsoft's mobile operating systems, and it's only significant open-source competitors, are — oh the irony — were actually built on AOSP."
Any comments and/or thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks to all...

Simple automation app like Smart Phone Lite

Is there any app that can inherit Smart Phone Lite, which was abandoned by its developer years ago? This means:
Free (or at least freemium)
Simple, not a bloatware
Has no extra plugins/add-ons to install
"Once a profile no longer applies, the previous settings get restored." which spares the need to manually define a "Normal" profile
Thanks!
llama?
i think llama is dead.
IFTTT? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ifttt.ifttt
E=Robot
Are you sure it answers all 4 conditions?
1) It's freemium indeed.
2) What do you think?
3) No plugins in Google Play Store, so that's good.
4) That's a crucial part - is it like this?
Unlike Ilama above, it's still available in Google Play Store but seems to be abandoned nonetheless (last updated at 2019).

Article What are the first five apps you install on Windows?

Getting a new PC can be a magical moment, and turning it on for the first time is always a fun experience. But that can all take a backseat once you have to start setting everything up how you like it. New PCs don't come with all the apps you use, so you have to start all over again. That begs the question: what are the first five apps you install when you set up a new computer? Of course, everyone's answer is different, so we'll get things started with our own list of indispensable apps for Windows 10.
1 - Windows Package Manager (winget)Package managers aren't really new, especially for Linux users, but until Microsoft launched its own last year, I had never really gotten into them. However, I have to say I really fell in love with the concept. Like other package managers, winget is a command line-based tool that lets you quickly search for apps and install them in a single interface. You can use commands like search, install, upgrade, and more to manage your apps. You can even import a list of apps you've installed, so when you set up a new PC, you can import and install them all in one go. Using this kind of tool can seem clunky at first, but it can actually be a lot faster once you get used to it.

It's likely that Microsoft will eventually bundle Windows Package Manager into Windows itself, and if you're using Windows 10 Insider builds, it's already installed by default. If you're not, you can join the Insider program for Windows Package Manager to get updates for it automatically through the Microsoft Store. The tool is included as part of the App Installer listing on the Store. Finally, you can download the latest version from the GitHub repository, if you want to handle everything manually.
2 - Unigram (and other social apps)One of the things we use our computers for the most is talking to our friends and family. So of course messaging and social apps are essential to many of us. My social app of choice is Unigram - an unofficial client for Telegram. Now, there are official Telegram clients for almost every platform, including Windows 10, but Unigram is really cool if you're a fan of Microsoft's design language. The experience is built almost completely on native UWP technologies, so it looks exactly how you would expect a Windows 10 app to look. Plus, while it's unofficial, the Telegram team actually supports Unigram development, and the app is even listed on the official Telegram website. Most new features arrive on Unigram alongside other versions, sometimes even faster than on Telegram Desktop. Oh, and did I mention it works on Xbox consoles?
You can download the latest version of Unigram from the Microsoft Store. Of course, there are a few other messaging apps I use until I can convince everyone to use Telegram/Unigram. Microsoft Teams has a version for personal use that I use for video calls, Facebook has an official Messenger app, and if you only use Instagram for the DMs, I really like Indirect. Much like Unigram, it's an unofficial client that leverages a lot of the Windows 10 design elements, and it's completely focused on the messaging experience on Instagram.
3 - myTube!myTube! (yes, the exclamation mark is part of the name) is another unofficial client, this time for YouTube. I first used it back when I had a Windows phone, which Google refused to support. Like Unigram, myTube! implements a ton of design and UX elements of Windows 10, which makes it feel right at home. The interface is completely optimized for touch, too, and video playback and scrubbing works really well with both a touchscreen and a mouse. You can easily cut through the clutter by going straight into your subscriptions, and it has a lot of nice features. It can remember where you were last time you watched a video, it has its own watch history that can choose to separate or merge with your official YouTube history, and more. Some syncing features are limited by Google's APIs, but I still love it.
One thing you may or may not like is that myTube, by default, won't play ads. If you're not paying for YouTube Premium or a channel membership but you still want to support your favorite creators, there's an option to use the YouTube web player for videos, which will load the ads as usual. You will be sacrificing some myTube! features, though.
You can download myTube! from the Microsoft Store.
4 - FeedLabMicrosoft includes a News app with Windows 10, but it's really meant to deliver more mainstream news from a specific set of sources. RSS feeds can still be a great way to get news from all the sources you like, and I enjoy FeedLab a lot. My original choice would have been Nextgen Reader, but sadly, that's not available anymore. FeedLab is an unofficial client for Feedly, which is a very popular RSS feed aggregator. In addition to showing you headlines, Feedly lets you read full articles for many websites directly within the app. When you sign in with Feedly, all your sources and categories are imported as they are on the website, so things will feel pretty familiar.
Feedly also offers a lot of customization options like light and dark themes, setting your homepage, changing how you prefer to see the news headlines, setting notifications, and so on. Like other apps on this list, it uses some Windows 10 design elements, and it has support touch gestures to make the experience that much better on tablets. The app is ad-supported, but for $2.99, you can remove ads and get access to offline mode, so you can sync your articles and save them for when you don't have internet. You can download it on the Microsoft Store.
5 - FeemAs connected as all of our devices are today, I still don't think there's an ideal way to send files from my phone to my PC out of the box. Both Windows and Android offer nearby sharing options, but they're not cross-compatible. Feem is a cross-platform service that does just that. You can use your home Wi-Fi or create a Wi-Fi Direct connection to send files from your phone to your PC, usually much faster than by uploading them to a cloud service. It supports any file type you might want, and you can send multiple files at once, so the whole experience is pretty seamless.
Of course, there are plenty of cloud storage services that let you access files on all kinds of devices, but if you're not willing to pay for cloud storage, Feem is a great tool. You can download it from the Microsoft Store, but it's also available on other major platforms including Android, iOS, and macOS.
If you're wondering why Google Chrome or any other browser isn't on this list, I actually really like the new Edge browser from Microsoft. It's installed automatically on recent versions of Windows 10, but if you have an older machine, you can download it here.
Those are just my picks, though, and I know have a very particular taste. What apps do you always install as soon as you set up a Windows PC? We'd love to hear your thoughts!
In a fresh windows I would install first
1. Opera as my main browser
2. Telegram

Of course, the first order of business is always to get rid of Microsoft Edge.
First 'app' I install is Linux.
This thread is super interesting to me because the first one on the list is a browser, or you use Edge. For me:

Slack
Microsoft To Do
Firefox, VLC, Telegram, Steam and Winareo
Chrome
Snagit
Adobe Cloud
Slack/Telegram
Spotify
Chrome
Steam

Brave, as my main browser
because chrome sucks

Iiyama android panel pc + webview

Hello,
I have an Iiyama ProLite TW1523AS-B1P Android screen. -> https://iiyama.com/gb_en/products/prolite-tw1523as-b1p/
It's a 15" touch screen that runs Android 8.1.0. without GMS. I want to use it as a dashboard for my Home Assistant setup. The only thing it needs to do is run some sort of Kiosk app/browser that points to my Home Assistant URL. I tried "Fully Kiosk Browser" and some other apps but my Home Assistant URL won't load, it appears that the Android Webview component is too old (61.0.3163.98).
But Iiyama never issued updates, the screen comes with Android 8.1 and that's it. I installed Aurora store and installed Chrome & Chrome Beta & the lastest Android Webview in the hope to adjust the WebView implementation to use anything other then Android Webview but it's the only option I get in the Developer Tools, I can only select the Android Webview, not the installed Chrome or Chrome Beta.
From the Fully Kiosk FAQ:
If you’ve installed the latest Android Webview and Google Chrome but Fully Kiosk still shows an outdated Webview version in the Device Info box (in Other Settings) your Android device likely has an AOSP ROM where you can’t update the Webview. The integrated Webview has another app ID (com.android.webview) than one provided by Google Play (com.google.android.webview). So the new Webview will be installed side by side but the old integrated Webview will still be used by Android system (and it’s app ID is hardcoded in Android OS). There is a workaround for rooted devices however it’s very complicated to use.
I think that's my problem as well. I installed Magisk to try and root the device but it bricked it so I had to ask for a replacement screen, not sure if that will work every time Do I have any other options? I was really hoping that Android 8.1 was "new" enough to load my Home Assistant URL but apparently not, but I could not test it before trying the screen so now I'm a bit stuck with this screen, hoping to update the webview component or change it to Google Chrome so it loads my Home Assistant URL. Thanks!

Someting about Android apps on Windows11 and how to use Android apps on Windows11

Windows 11 launched on October 5 after spending months in beta. However, the launch version of Windows 11 came without one of the most-anticipated features — native Android emulation allowing users to run Android apps on their PCs. Microsoft had then said it would be testing the feature soon and releasing it to the stable Windows 11 channel later.
Amazon is part of the packageLike Microsoft, Amazon has struggled to get developers to deliver Android apps for its Appstore. Amazon's Fire tablets run on a modified version of Android and anyone who's owned one can tell you there are many holes in what's available. People end up installing Google's Play Store because of it.
The Microsoft Store can be similarly infuriating to use -- from its selection to navigation to payment. With the redesign, Microsoft made it easier for developers to get their apps in the store and make more money doing it. Likewise, Amazon is using the new access to hundreds of millions of Windows customers to attract developers and expand their reach by getting in the Appstore. In the public preview, there is integrated search, browse and discovery for apps in the updated Microsoft Store.
It's not clear if you'll be able to sideload Android apps from other sources or install Google Play Services and the Play Store separately like the Fire tablets. Amazon was the first to get involved but Microsoft says it's not exclusive.
Google not being directly involved here isn't exactly a surprise, either. After all, Google's competing Chrome OS already has access to Android apps through the Google Play store. The thing is, despite being an option for years now, not all Android apps work on Chromebooks. Hopefully, Microsoft can avoid that with how apps will work on PCs.

@NuevoLi
I'd appreciate if you share with us on XDA how to use Android apps on Windows 11. However, I've removed the links you provided anyway; those two websites you linked to are not accepted on XDA at all. Do not use XDA as a means to make money.
XDA Forum Rules (excerpt):
13. Advertising and Income Generation
Commercial advertising, advertising referral links, pay-per-click links, all forms of crypto-mining and other income generating methods are forbidden. Do not use XDA-Developers as a means to make money.
(However, hosting sites that provide a small amount of income, are GPL compliant, have direct download links, and minimal ads are allowed contingent on XDA approval.)

It will be really a great opportunity for developers to grab their piece of cake. I had posted this news in December on my FB group. I don't know if its allowed to share FB links here. There I have explained it more categorically how its a great time to conquer the industry for developers
If you want to run Android apps on Windows, you need to install the Windows subsystem for Android and Amazon Appstore, and your PC must exceed certain thresholds. Once everything is in place, your Android app will work just like any other native Windows app.
