Question How to automatically open keyboard when opening app drawer? - Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

Hi, It would be great to have an option to automatically open the keyboard when opening the app drawer, so you can instantly start typing/searching without reaching for the search bar first. Any idea on how to accomplish this task on my new s23u, asking for a freshly converted iPhone user missing spotlight.
Thanks!

I use the "home screen only" layout because I'm used to the swipe up to search function with the keyboard automatically opening. (only available without app drawer)

If you utilize Good lock (or Nice lock if its not supported) you can swipe down from the app screen to focus the search bar with keyboard opened

Have you been able to get this to work? When I click on Finder access I get two radio buttons (Home Screen and App screen) and you can't select either.

Maybe you need to disable the home screen only from your regular settings.

Not sure what you mean - I def don't want all my apps on my home screens so I have it set to "Home and Apps screens" in home screen layout. Is that what you mean???

Yeah that's what ment. If you have it like that then I'm not sure why you can't select the Apps screen radio button from Good note app.
Try updating the Home up apk or reset some settings.

Try using the Routines, its pretty powerful for all kinds of stuff like this.

I figured it out. You need to disable "swipe down for notifications" in settings to enable Home Up search. It's one or the other. If you have "swipe down for notifications" enabled, then the radio buttons in Home Up search are disabled.
This then means you need to swipe down from the top of the (very tall) screen to see your notifications. It's not really a good trade-off because you get a lot more notifications than use app search (but good for everyone to know it's an option).

Works ok here with swipe down for notification

Can you elaborate? What I'm saying is that you cannot swipe down anywhere on a home screen for both Finder (App) Search and Notifications. If you enable FInder Search anywhere on the home screen, you can only pull down the notification shade from the top of your device.
Are you seeing something different?

I swipe down from home screen to get notifications, I swipe up to get to the apps screen and then at that screen I swipe down to get the search with keyboard on focus.

Isn't that just the app drawer? Anyway, you have it set to all apps on your homescreen so we're not running the same config.

Thanks. The issue with this is that the keyboard doesn't appear automatically with the swipe up, which was the question originally asked.

Indeed but this is expected. The Good lock feature explicitly says that you'll need to swipe down from the app screen for the keyboard to show and focus on the search bar.
What you want is to swipe down from the home screen and have the keyboard immediately show?

That's what the OP asked // the title of this thread.
If you put an icon on a home screen (ideally in the dock) for Sesame or Finder App search, that's what happens (you can start searching immediately). That's what I'm doing. 1 click instead of 2.

I know this isn't exactly what you asked, but you might like it as much or better. Use the One Hand Operation + module in Good Lock. You can set one of the 12 gestures to Finder. It comes up with the keyboard active. I use this module to define a screenshot gesture (swipe diagonally up from bottom right), which I find easier and quicker than other methods. I also define back and forward gestures.
There are a lot of interesting actions that can be assigned.

[Q] How to change bottom shortcuts on Gingerbread home screen

I wish to change the 2 shortcuts at the bottom of Gingerbread default home screen (Phone, Browser) to something else (Messages, Gmail). But I couldn't find a way to change those icons either by press and hold on the shortcut, or by dragging icons from the Apps screen.
What's the best way to change them without using 3rd party launchers?
Thanks.
On 2.3.5 Samsung Galaxy Mini I just press Menu key in app drawer and then edit to change Touchwizz launcher shortcut.
I am not totally sure if I can remember right, as I do not use the stock GB launcher at the moment, but have you tried using the menue button while the app drawer is opened?
try going on the app drawer, press the options button near the key and press Edit and then try and drag them
If you have the stock Gingerbread launcher, it is not possible to change them. You could try an alternate launcher like LauncherPro.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

Thanks for the idea, I tried to open menu at app drawer, show only:
- Manage applications (equiv to Settings -> applications -> manage applications)
- Search (opens Google search)
- Notifications (opens top-down notification screen)
- Settings (Opens Gingerbread Settings screen)

Alright then, I was using LauncherPro but for its bugs (like stacking icons), and slow load time on my aging machine, I'd rather give the stock launcher a try.

Is this stock Gingerbread launcher or Samsung launcher? The button looks like a Samsung one
Trick is being in the App List when you select the Menu button
Go from the Home Screen into your application list then select the Menu button - you'll now see Edit - View Type- Share App. Choose Edit and from here you can move out and then select what apps you want on the lower home screen. Select the Menu button again and chose Save. Once you are done it will leave your apps in the default view - choose the menu again and select View Type and select Alphabetical Grid - done and done.
For Stock GB 2.3.6 only. Newer Versions don't Require all this BS
Got it figured out, looks like the previous instructions have a missing step
1) Go to all Applications
2) Select "Menu", then select "Customization Grid".. Not Alphabetical or List
3) Select "Menu" and now the "EDIT" option shows up
4) You can Now "ADD" or "REMOVE" Shortcuts from Shortcut Bar
5) Hit "BACK" to stop the Editing function
I found the answer to your question!

Access Notifications While Browsing?

When I'm using the web browser, I can't access the notification pull down. So if texts or other things come in, I have to go to the home screen, pull down and then look at the notification. Am I missing something? Is there a setting? I would like to have the notification bar show up when the address bar does I think.
Use chrome..

this is a HUGE problem for me too. I've asked a couple times in different browser threads and no one likes to ask this. the only answer I've ever seen is just like this,a quick snappy "use this awesome browser instead" and I otherwise like the stock browser best. but seriously, this royally pisses me off too. anyone with a solution, please speak up
is there a way to install sense 3.0 browser on this phone from an evo 3d? I like the new browser in every way except the status bar thing mentioned here, and the loss of the omni-awesome-bar the old one had. is it just one system apk to install over, or is it more complicated than that?
...because, I've noticed other things I've tried, like the flashlight from the 3d, don't match the screen resolution and the button is not where you must press on screen to work it. would browser have this same problem? and, is it just one apk or more integrated with the system than that?
thank you,
With the E3D you have to tap the capacitive menu button while in some browsers to make the notifications bar reappear. Maybe try tapping the recent apps button?
doesn't work. even the recent app button won't let you get to the status bar. literally must go back to home screen, or switch to an app that shows the status bar. either way, the browser page reloads, which sucks if you are composing something or on YouTube
one work around is by clicking the refresh button ^_^
If you scroll to the top of the browser, options come up at the bottom of the screen (add, bookmarks, saved, tabs) If you hit tabs, the notification bar comes down and you can resume the page your viewing without refreshing

I'm having the same issue. My friend says his notification bar is pretty much permanent and if it doesn't appear, all he does is scroll to the top of the webpage and it appears. For those of us that are having problems, I think the most efficient option is to use the "refresh" workaround!

To get to the notification bar from the stock browser, just press and hold anywhere on the screen and the bar should appear.

Simplest way I've found is to flick the screen just a bit, as if you are going to scroll up or down, which makes the browser address/menu-bars appear. If you select 'Tabs' on the lower-right, you not only see your tabs but the notification bar also appears.

Phone (Dialer) application missing after OTA?

Hey everyone, hopefully this isn't a total noob question, but after the ICS OTA upgrade, I have no phone (Dialer) application.
That bar that runs across the bottom was totally blank besides the "All apps" button and I have no dialer icon on the home screen. When i go into all apps, I do not have a (Dialer) application listed. I know the phone application is still on the phone somewhere because I can call people directly from my contacts, but i have no way to dial a number manually from what i can tell. If I go to settings > Apps > All, I can see the dialer there, but I have no way to create a shortcut to the dialer that I can use.
Anyone got any ideas on that?
It should be called "Phone" in the app tray. Is that missing too? What happens if you hit the search button and enter Phone, the icon should show up and you can drag it to the desktop or tray from there.

I am having the same issue as well. It is nowhere to be found in the app tray and the only way to access it is through the people app. I did have it a shortcut before installing the OTA on my lockscreen and that one still works so it is still functioning, I just can't find it!

Ya, unless someone finds a solution I'll be factory resetting my phone. I hope that means I don't have to download the OTA again, but whatever. For now I just downloaded a phone dialer from the Play Store. There are a bunch of them for free. I downloaded exDialer for now since it has no crazy permissions.

You also appear to be missing the button for Verizon Wireless apps at the bottom.
Same Problem
New Guy here having the same problem.
Phone app is not present in the All Apps section and unable to get it onto the launcher bar at the bottom of the homescreen,
Like mentioned above, I can access the app via Settings/Apps/All but unable to get it from there.
The App icon is on my lock screen but it's a pain to have to lock out your phone just to make a call.
I also placed the People app on the launcher as a workaround.
Hopefully someone or HTC/Verizon can get a fix or this.
Long press on your screen... select 'shortcuts'...... then select 'activities'.... then scroll down to 'phone'... then select 'phone'. That should do it for you.

I long press on the screen, hit shortcuts, and get a list of shortcuts (no activities option there) and no phone option. I have put a shortcut to the dialer on my phone before, I know where it should be and it is not there. Like I said above I also can't find it using third party options like desktop visualizer. It is gone.
Sorry, I'm doing this from memory since I'm not on the official OTA.... Its someplace in there. How about 'activities' and then 'apps'? There may be a shortcut to phone in there.
Ok so it did show up in desktop visualizer under apps and not "other" so I can make a shortcut to it on my screen but I won't be able to put it into the dashboard. It does not show up in anything from HTC aside from searching for it, using the people app, or going into manage apps.

Show keyboard automatically when opening Google Now

Hello,
I wonder if it's possible to open keyboard automatically after I swipe up on home button to launch Google Now. Now I need to click on input field on the top of screen to show keyboard and start typing.
Android 4.4, Nexus 4.
was googling for the same request. if someone bring up any solution would be awesome!
Keyboard popping up automatically in Google now
I like Google now. But I like just plain Google search better. I want to swipe up on my phone and automatically have the keyboard pop up and search the web or search my phone for a contact. With Google now on, it requires the second step of clicking on the search bar to open the keyboard. Because of that, I have always kept Google now off, because it would then allow the keyboard to open automatically. The ability to search this quickly with the swipe up feature was my single favorite feature of my moto phone.
But now, with the recent update to the Google search app on android, the keyboard no longer pops up automatically, even if I have now cards off. It just has a thing that says get now cards. This makes me angry. I want the Google search app to primarily be a search app, and open the keyboard when I swipe up. And I can close the keyboard if I want to use Google now.
I really want there to be am option to have it either way.

you can go to setting, application manager, swipe right to ALL, find "Google/google apps", tap on it, and choose uninstall update. It basically reverts the google app to the oldest version.
I also hate the update disabling the keyboard popup even if I don't have google now card enabled
I'm worried if later I update my phone to marshmallow, I have to tolerate having an extra tap on the google search text bar to activate the keyboard. I like the way it is now, just swipe up from the home button and have the keyboard ready.
Like you guys, I am super annoyed with the latest Google app updates which no longer pop up the keyboard automatically when looking to quickly enter in a search query. Kinda defeats the whole point of a search app, but anyway, I've refrained from updating for this very reason. I'm surprised more folks haven't complained about this and that an xposed module hasn't been created to reinstate this feature.
Has anyone found a solution to this annoying problem?
Before Marshmallow you can takeover the Home Button using "JB EXENOW" and link to the activity (e.g. via "Quckshortcutmaker"): googleapp.(...) queryentry.
This starts the google app with keyboard.
Sadly it doesn't work in marshmallow. I can set the shortcut, which is still working, but JBEXE isnt taking over the home button anymore.
I'm experimenting with "[GB][MM] Physical Button Music Control 4.0 beta6"-Xposed-Module, but until now i can't hook properly on the home button.

tasker solution
i made a profile for tasker that clicks on the search bar whenever the app opens up first.
the only downside is that you will need to pay for the "AutoInput" plugin (and Tasker) for it to work.
its well worth the few quid for AutoInput though. you can use it to toggle stuff like flight mode or NFC without needing to root your phone, switch between the current app and last app. . . or my favourite which is saving a song to a playlist in spotify, which can take ages since i have so many folders and sub-folders to click through each time
i cant post links yet so just do a google search for "autoapps projects" and look for "Google Search - show keyboard" by pymai

There is an easy way to do that using GravityBox and Nova Launcher. You have to go GravityBox -> Navigation bar tweaks (this section needs to be turned on with the master switch) -> Navigation ring targets -> Change Ring target 1 from Applications to Shortcuts -> Choose Nova Action -> Search (the one with the big magnifier icon). VoilĂ ! Now when you swipe up from your home button it will go directly to search bar and open keyboard.
GravityBox 5.4.5 [LP], Android 5.1.1 Rooted+Xposed, Nexus 5
If you're not rooted just install swipeup utility to replace Google and choose quick search..

Download Package Disabler Pro from the Play Store. I paid for the app; it's well worth it. After you install GBoard or whatever else keyboard you install, use Package Disabler Pro to disable the LG keyboard. PDP will prompt you to install an LG Service app and will need you to set a few permissions before it will give you the ability to disable apps that you'd otherwise not be able to.

I had this app for my S7edge. I didn't realize it worked for other phone brands as well. I did this and now Google Voice Typing is still showing as a keyboard. Would you happen to know how to get rid of this? I'm ultimately trying to get rid of the keyboard prompt that shows up in notifications when I'm typing.
install your keyboard of choice (GBoard for example)
Open settings
Go to Language and Input
Pick the default keyboard option
Hit "select more" if only one or two is shown
Select Gboard and turn it on.
Select LG Keyboard and turn it OFF
You can leave Google voice typing ON if you want.
This will get rid of the keyboard icon in the notification area. You don't have to uninstall, delete, or disable the LG keyboard, just turn it off from the list of available keyboards.

Interesting. I don't see the screen to shut off certain keyboards.

It is hiding.
Under Language and input you'll see "keyboard & input methods"
The first item is "Default"
select it.
Then look closely at the modal window that pops up.
It'll say "Change Keyboard"
It may list one or more options
then say "Cancel ... Select More"
You want select more.

Cool! I got to that screen. I shut off the LG board but I still saw the keyboard icon in my notification area whenever the gboard popped up. Turns out I also had to disable the Google Handwriting keyboard too. Now that silly icon doesn't show up! Thanks!
