Question Button placement - Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

S23U is my first ever Sammy device, and I am decidedly not in love with placement of the volume buttons. Any idea why it is so far up on the right side of the device, forcing me to slide my hand up every time I need to adjust? This could have been avoided if they had placed them below the power button. What am I missing?

Well, if you don't like using it, just return it and look for a phone meeting your expectations?
Edit: the Asus Zenphone 9 could be what you're looking form in term of size factor.

I mostly like the phone, it is just those god damn buttons. Have pressed the power button 5x in the last 3 hours when intending to adjust the volume. was a genuine question trying to understand what the rationale may have been.

you will get used to it in time - changes are always hard at the beginning

The only solution i can give You is to use samsung one hand operation:
One Hand Operation + – Aplikacje w Google Play
Z łatwością korzystaj z urządzenia jedną ręką!
play.google.com
It is must have app for me as you can do everything with gestures. In example you can short swipe up to volume up and swipe down to volume down. You can adjust long swipe with all other phone settings like one hand mode, home, back button etc. I use it for so long time that i can't even operate the phone without it xD

I agree, but there's surely a objective reason for that, pretty sure engineers thought about it .
I hate the placement too coming from oneplus, but Ill get use to it I guess.

You have to get used to it.
It took me a week to learn that the power button is under the volume control (pixel 7 has the power button above)

That is what I was looking for. Thanks so much. Moved the volume control to the left edge which is where it should have been. Today I discovered that their placement interferes with my X-ram phone holder and my DJI drone controller. Truly mystifying decision by Samsung. Ended up just disabling the volume buttons with Button Mapper.

[Request] Alternative touchless/trackball based unlock

Hi,
All previous iterations of android phones could be unlocked without using the touchscreen, eg. by tapping the menu button twice. Problem is that the menu button is capacitive on the Nexus. You can't press it with gloves, nor can you slide unlock the screen.
The trackball was useful because you could minimally operate apps with it, like skipping tracks in the music app..
Could it be possible to develop an alternate unlock mecanism, such as drawing a large circle using the trackball ?
I look forward to not having to take off my gloves to skip tracks when skiing
Use your nose jk it would be nice to have another way to unlock.
Or even map it to the volume button (while still requiring the slide-to-unlock) and I'd be happy as a clam. The power button is just hard to reach for some, sometimes.

...always looking out for the dwarfs of the world. very nice of you!
I'd be happy to be able at least wake up the phone with the trackball!
That would be perfect to me...i would assume its just some directory setting..does anyone know how to achieve this?

I did actually contemplate that, but my pride talked me out of doing it on a crowded ski slope.
Probably my biggest con for the phone...unlocking it requires pressing the power button. Someone please hack this!
I'm trying to find the way to wake up with the trackball, but not found
I want to group same number or contact on call log (like as Iphone) also
This is a fantastic idea. I am honestly worried about wearing out the power button. I don't find this a flaw with the nexus, but I would love the option to turning on the screen with one tap and unlocking the phone with a second tap. I know this will make a lot of people happy. can someone please do it?
i'd love a "trackball-on" feature - the g1 could be activated with every button on it.
this was good to unburden the power-button.
There is an app that doing that...Lock 2.0
rename Lock 2.0.zip to Lock 2.0.apk

It costs money, but if you buy the ICE Lockscreen (By appventive), it lets you wake up the screen with the volume rocker. Its also a good thing to have just in case you get into an accident or something happens to you.
This is a feature I have wanted to see since I received the N1 ... I would love to see a Trackball -On feature ......... almost like, I hate to say it .... but how the iphone unlocks.

Then Lock 2.0 would be ideal for you.
I have always hated how we need to press the power button to lock and unlock this thing. Makes me feel like I have an iphone. My G1 and mytouch had the power button at the bottom so it was not a problem.
If I could develop the app I would, but unfortunately I do not know how.

Does that prevent the phone to sleep?

Edit: I just tried it. Even the trackball works!
Update: It's buggy. Doesn't work every single time. Sometimes you'll have to press Power first.
Does this prevent the phone to sleep?
i just tried lock 2.0 and i guess it does the job but its so hideous! none of the themes are formated for the N1. so the background will only reach 75% but it does allow you to turn the screen on via volume switch. if they can do this, then im sure someone else can do this too. idc if i have to pay, i just want my normal 2.1 lock screen and just be able to use the volume or trackball. someone make this happen please! if we ask enough it might just happen
Tried Lock 2.0. Its ok, seem to have some bugs. password protect is a joke. If you press the trackball to wake up, all you have to do is tap the home key and it goes home bypassing the lock screen. You can do that with or without the password protect on. I think it needs some work to be compatable with the nexus one.
Even better if someone could create something, a device, or something so that I could unless my N1 with only the power of my mind itself! thnik2unlock.apk kgo
I use "screen mode widget" from the Market

Galaxy S II Home button click?

I'm not sure if the home button on my GS2 is normal... Does anyone elses click loudly when you press it? It just feels strange and I want to make sure it's not faulty...
Cheers
Its a difficult to guess what 'loud' is in this case, mate. But most of the time, buttons need to be worn in for them to work smoothly.
I've only had the GS2 for about 5 days. Hmm, but I was just wondering if all the GS2 click when you press in the home button...
Thanks
Mine clicks. It's a pretty clicky button. But half as loud as a mouse-click.
That sounds about right then. Also if I apply pressure onto the button and don't full depress it, there is a little bit of movement in the button, this is what made me think at first maybe the button got dislodged somehow? But I wasn't sure... Hopefully it's OK.
Cheers
can we adjust the click sound volume level? or disable it (no silence all)?

If you remove the battery you see a small knob which you can rotate. By default it's on position 7 (from 1-10). Which is rather loud. You can turn it anti-clockwise to 1 (least amount of clickety-noise), but if you turn it a bit further (there will be some resistance) you can fully disable the sound the Home button makes.
Next to the knob is also a little switch with which you can disable the Home button lag. By default it's on "Lag" but I usually turn it to "Lagfree". It also made my homescreen-switching smoother, but I think that might be a placebo, not sure.
Hope this helps.
Hello,
My unit has not so such tuning features for home button (and i would love it), very smooth for my taste...

[Q] Extremely dumb question - which way is up?

This is probably the dumbest question ever asked on this forum, but I have no idea which end is up on my Tab. I bought this thing used off CL so I have no idea how the orientation was out of box. Then, it works no matter how I turn it in my hands which confuses me more.
So, I figured a simple solution would be to look at the volume rocker and see which way I have to push it to turn the volume up. That makes me think the power button/volume goes in the lower left hand corner. But I find myself bumping the buttons during regular use and the Time magazine app displays upside down. So I rotate it the other way so the power button/volume is in the upper right hand of the device but now when I press volume down the volume goes up and vice versa so I'm extremely confused. Which end is up on this thing?
You want the buttons on the top of the Tab.
The Word SAMSUNG should be in the lower...
...in addition, the 30 pin connector is at the bottop, right below SAMSUNG ...
Sent from the 10.1th galaxy...
His question is about portrait mode.
As per me the volume buttons should be top right hand corner. Also try to get accustomed to use the volume button in the opposite way

So the volume rocker is backwards then? When I'm holding it in portrait (I never use it in landscape ever) the dock connector is on the left and the power buttons on the right then? Why is the rocker backwards?
1) Correct, this is the dumbest question ever asked on this forum.
2) There is no "up" on a tablet. That's kind of the point. Some programs will turn to a specific orientation. In these programs, your best bet is to turn the tablet so that the words read left to right. Or so that the angry birds fly from left to right. I really hope you get the picture, but judging from the question, I'm skeptical that you don't need a youtube video (the "play" button should be in the lower left hand corner).

Thing is I feel like I'm operating a helicopter with all the spinning. I just want one end to be up so I can label it with an arrow or something. Different apps change the orientation confusing the crap out of me.
Just use it the way it fits best to use.
And as a hint, the tab is less laggier if you hold it landscape with the Samsung Logo readable. A weird Tegra 2 Bug which hasn't been fixed until know, hardware problem
Go into the settings and turn off autorotate then. Problem solved. At least one of them, that is...

I tried that at first. But some apps turned it upside down and the market always goes into landscape for some reason. It never displays in portrait.
If there was a hall of fame for stupid threads on XDA, this one would be in it.
No need for that, we all have to start off somewhere.
Galaxy tab 10.1 is supposed to be operated in landscape mode. So almost all the apps will open in landscape except some non tablet optimized ones.

On the use of physical buttons and long press features

Hello guys!
I have several things in mind, and a few questions. Hope this is the right place to post.
First of all: why are all the smartphones makers getting rid of physical buttons? I don't see any good thing about those tactile buttons we have on the Galaxy S3 for instance: you press the "back" button by mistake all the time, and you have to turn your screen on to be able to use them.
How do you do when you're doing some sports or just walking down the street and simply press a button in your pocket to skip a track you're listening to?
Secondly: I thought there was a kind of rule about how to use the long press function on volume buttons. In my mind, it's clear that a long press on Volume Up will skip to the next track, and a long press on Volume Down will skip to the previous track. How disappointed I was when I discovered it was not the case on the Galaxy S3!
Is there a simple way to have this working (no custom ROM, no super complicated hacking...)? Is it a modification by Samsung itself? Cause apparently applications I was using before on my old HTC that supported this feature don't skip anymore when I long press on Volume Up button... instead, it just destroy my ears with a super loud volume! How useful is that?!
I don't want to change the stock ROM, as I had a lot of troubles before with custom ROMs on my previous smartphone (either the GPS wouldn't work anymore, or the camera, or another thing...)
Thanks in advance for your help and advices!
EDIT: I found a way to achieve this. Check out my other post!

Volume Key Long Press

Despite having no lock screen set, I cannot get the volume button long press to work to load the applications. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? The option is enabled, and I've only disabled applications that deal with the voice recognition stuff from LG.
Edit: Go figure... After half an hour of research and trying different things it only works after I posted this question. I have no idea what I did differently.

I assume your talking about the screen off press and hold to launch camera or quick note trick? I've noticed a couple Times it hasn't worked right for me, but it usually does.
Make sure your screen is off, and press vol down and hold for a good couple seconds and it should launch the shortcut. Also make sure the proximity sensor isn't covered. Mine didn't work at all when it was covered, which is the same for the double tap to wake.
Btw, do you know how to change what the button launches? I like the camera but don't care for quick note, and didn't see a way to change it.

I have found they will not launch for me if I am in a Chromecast session, or playing some music with the screen off through the phone's speaker. I am assuming that was my problem since I can't replicate it under any other circumstances.
There is an option in the phone's menu system to turn it on or off, but it does not allow for the shortcut to be changed. We'll have to wait for custom ROMs to give us this feature.

Yeah that does make sense. And I didn't think they were changeable but it's good to know this is confirmed.
