Question Missing features on unlocked version verizon - Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

My s22 didn't have none of the issues I'm having now with features. The only difference was I had a physical Sim vs esim and both unlocked.
1. No volte option
2. No video call option
3.samsung messages no enabling RCS
4.

This sounds like it's not properly provisioned to use those features. I would contact Verizon to make sure your phone is properly registered and that the sim allows those features.

sorta defeats the purpose of the unlocked version as in I do need those features due to family out the country that's why I thought they had cleared all this up this year apparently they have not just sad really......Apple sales unlocked phones daily no issues at all...Google should have built out their data base plants like apple and not rely on some carriers to do what is right...just sayin

No I think you need to factory reset which sucks but have the regular Verizon sim card in your phone and it should have all the features on your phone upon activation.

This has been going on for a long time. There were threads about this on S20U and S22U forums. If you are using an U.S. Unlocked phone without the Carriers Firmware sometimes you miss out on carrier specific features. Seems to prove my point since you saw the store Verizon Phone phone with the options but not yours.

I can confirm that I have all of those features on my unlocked S23U, model SM-S918U1 using a Verizon SIM.

Also just now added a Verizon eSIM to my S23U to test and I can confirm all of the features are working on my end.
One thing of note - If registration is successful, the phone will prompt you to restart device in order to activate the features associated with the SIM. I do believe this process can get hung up or something happens that prevents it from working right (I experienced that before on previous phones) - which I think you'd need to try resetting the network config and the SIM settings and go through the process of re-adding the SIM or eSIM.

I've had the unlocked s21 ultra s22 ultra and now the s23 ultra and I never had any luck getting those features to work on any of them. The only time they worked was when I flashed the Verizon firmware. Then I lost the Samsung cloud and caller ID and spam functions. So I just resolved myself to not have those features and enjoy my unlocked phone. One other thing to note when I did have RCS on Samsung messages with the Verizon ROM it only did RCS between Verizon phones. If you do figure out how to get this working let me know cuz I'd be interested in trying it too.
Thank you

That's odd. I had the same problem with T-Mobile, but when I inserted the T-Mobile sim, it downloaded the provisioning and everything worked. It sounds to me like the provisioning possibly may not have downloaded. I'd say try having them send provisioning to your phone. If you can't get them to do it, try a different carrier's sim card, so that it downloads something else, then go back to the Verizon one, so that it pulls it down again. Maybe that will work.

I only buy unlocked because the last time I paid in full a Verizon phone they tried to tack on a $30 upgrade fee.

I'd recommend doing a factory reset then and re-adding the Verizon SIM or eSIM, and make sure to restart when prompted so the phone can install the features. You should not have to flash Verizon firmware to get those features to work on the SM-S918U1.

Yes, and Secure Wi-Fi has now been added. I think it previously existed only on the European firmwares. Now we get it, too.
Any way to see if AT&T Wifi Calling will work as I do not see the option in Settings? I have US Unlocked GS9 on AT&T
If I flash this U1 for my ATT phone (running full Tmobile firmware now),
will I have Wifi calling with Tmobile? Or Wifi calling only works with Verizon with U1

Despite what the websites like to post, there really isn't a VZW U1 and an ATT U1. There's just XAA U1. You'll get Wi-Fi Calling on every carrier with it now, except for ATT.

Reading up on it (short summary) this is because AT&T uses a database of IMEI numbers to provision WiFi calling and VoLTE. Since our IMEI numbers from our phones are not in that database we won't be able to use WiFi calling or VoLTE.
Makes sense but is ridiculous for AT&T to restrict it. Has anyone ever called to ask to have thier Unlocked IMEI added to this "list" so that these features will work? Seems like it is a disadvantage for AT&T if it works for TMo and now Verizon but not AT&T...?
Just curious...

It's odd for sure. Verizon has always had VoLTE on unlocked too. At least since the S7. Probably before that. ATT has never felt the need to change the policy.

Who can say if it's disadvantageous or not, for all we know it might be the technology differences between the networks. Also it does make sense... having specific IMEI numbers known to connect to carrier specific services like wifi calling and VoLTE ensures that everything works. It doesn't make it convenient for us and I will admit it would be nice to have the features.. but for calling via wifi there are options.
Personally I use pbx in a flash and bria softphone. With the right VoIP provider it's a good setup and doesn't break the bank at all. I haven't even spent more then 5 bucks maybe in a month. For me this is better then wifi calling and I don't have any problems.
As for adding our IMEI to that database I tried inquiring about it, but I do recall reading where some people may have had luck in doing this. I suspect it may require a bit of luck and/or perserveriance after my last discussion with AT&T customer service.
I explained the situation and what needed to be done while being placed on hold a few times. As the call continued I tried to be patient with the person I spoke too, but I admit it is not easy when he is saying that just because I see H data speed that it's actually VoLTE. When I mentioned the speed test and how it was H data speed (and that H data speeds are not VoLTE) he was saying that H data speeds were like blazing fast compared to LTE..
I had to politely finish the call before I either started to laugh or feel sorry for that rep.

In my case I tried to be patient with the person I spoke too. After waiting on hold a few times the representative tried to say everything was normal.. and then proceeded but to say that just because I see H+ speed that it's actually VoLTE. The only thing I've seen some people do successfully to get VoLTE working on an unbranded unlocked device is to have AT&T provision a SIM card to an IMEI of a phone that is AT&T branded and capable of VoLTE. Then use that SIM card on the unbranded unlocked device.

Hd voice always worked on unlocked for Verizon. Wifi calling is found in the phone app's settings.

No problem. You're not the first person to look for it in the wrong place. U1 builds always place the setting there. So they stayed consistent doing it this way.

Question Rooted Pixel 6 on Verizon

My Pixel 6 hasn't arrived yet but hopefully soon. I'm getting the unlocked version and I'm a Verizon customer. My plan is to root the phone and stay on the Google builds. I don't plan to install the Verizon build. I don't want anything from Verizon except the SIM card (which I already have and plan to transfer from my previous phone).
I've heard some reports of this not working though, of intermittent or no connectivity from Verizon. Some people on other forums report that they need to go to a store for a SIM swap, or switch to eSIM, but even that only works for a while and then it drops again.
Does anyone here have more info? Is this expected to work or does Verizon have a way to force you to use their builds?

First, they are not built by Verizon they are built by Google with different modem/network items for Verizon. That is the only difference, no extra apps or anything like that. As soon as you put a VZ SIM in it you will pull the My Verizon app no matter what firmware you are using. You can uninstall it. The updates all come from Google, not the carrier.
Go to the Google factory image download page and look at the Pixel 5 downloads. You will see in March of 2021 there was only one image for everything and it was that way for months. Then this fall they split apart. This is very common, Google splits them for awhile then merges them.
The VZ version will not lock your phone, add any bloatware or anything like that. But might give you a better signal.
What you want to do will work but isn't needed and probably not the best way to do it.

Thanks... one concern is that I'm coming from a Samsung and on this phone, Verizon forces OTAs. You can delay when the update happens but only briefly. This is a VZW phone, not unlocked, but I figured the VZW firmware is pushing the updates.
Updating requires re-rooting so I'd prefer to do it on my schedule, not Verizon's. Do you know if this is going to be an issue with the Pixel?

One further thing Verizon puts on. Under "all apps" - show system - scroll down for the "my verizon services" app. You can't delete it you can only stop and disable it. It does get reenabled on some schedule, perhaps on the monthly updates, so every once in a while you need to redo the disable thing. What it does it allows Verizon to get into your phone and see all the apps you have installed and when you installed them. Also how long your system has been running, whether or not you factory reset etc. Very intrusive, imo, so I always disable it first thing and check it regularly.

These instructions worked perfectly to get esim working.
I'm using the Verizon firmware on the unlocked model. Wifi calling works and all.
I didn't get the QR code but the Reddit thread has a link for one on step 7. And my account was already CDMAless because of using a 1+ 7 Pro prior.
It took about 5-10 minutes after doing everything before I could make calls and send texts.
Idk if wifi calling works on unlocked firmware but it's enabled by a Verizon specific system app, com.verizon.mips.services
Edit. Idk why the link has a screenshot preview.
Mine didn't require any special provisioning. Running Google version of firmware. Unlocked bootloader, rooted, then inserted SIM from previous 2 XL.
Awesome, @TotallyAnxious and @Sunsparc, thank you both.

Well I'm not quite an identical situation but I'm using visible. And from what I've seen from Sears, we encounter the exact same problems as it's the same parent company. It worked instantly out of the box as soon as I pop my SIM card in on my unlocked Pixel (Global) 6 Pro. No issues at all.
However, as you're probably well aware, test builds with other games don't work. Oxygen OS 12 beta 1/2 for example, would not work with visible or Verizon Even when I put in the correct commonly unknown APN settings (There's actually four of them).

Unlocked. I always buy unlocked.
I just recently paid of my Verizon Pixel 4 XL and called Verizon to see if they could unlock the bootloader. After about an hour and speaking with Tier 2 tech support, I was informed that the bootloader is locked forever and was recommended to buy directly from Google if you need to unlock the bootloader.

Question Locked AT&T S23U vs Unlocked S23U

Since the Galaxy S6 Edge days I've been getting AT&T branded Samsung phones. This time around due to initial perks of a trade in were better for the unlocked version of S23U, I went ahead and pre-ordered the unlocked version. Are there any drawbacks anyone has experienced with the unlocked version that would warrant me to cancel the order? Are there any AT&T features such as visual voicemail, personal hotspot or HD voice that isn't compatible with the unlocked, non carrier version? Any help would be appreciated as i believe I can still cancel the order.
Thank you.
With an unlocked phone, you cant call. But if you add a sim card into it you can do anything such as mobile data, call, hotspot, etc. An unlocked phone can work on any carrier. But it is still the same thing as an at&t version unless you add the sim card in it.
So I assumed if i insert my AT&T simcard it'll work just like an AT&T phone?

That's what I have done for every phone I have had since the S7 Edge on T-Mobile. Still using the same simcard since I started out with the (S7 Edge), then Note 8, S20U, S22U and now S23U and has worked fine with T-Mobile but without the carrier bloat. The only downside is Unlocked versions always get the updates last.
You can always flash U (carrier firmware) that is bit different from from U1 (factory unlocked) firmware. This way you'll get exactly the same experience as for the phone of any carrier directly. You can always switch back and forth with data wipe.

First time Sammy user here, so possibly a stupid question but... from my search it appears that other than carrier bloatware you don't loose anything by going to U1 firmware and possibly gain faster updates. Is that a correct? Seems to be the case for WiFi calling but what about ATT wifi hotspots for example?
Unlocked phones were useful for sticking local SIMs in them for international travel but with the new international plans pricing is actually reasonable so it is not worth the hassle.

Question S23 ultra Verizon

I'm curious if anyone knows the compatibility of a US Verizon s23 ultra and T-Mobile's network. I assumed they would be compatible as long as its carrier unlocked however I'm having issues getting my Verizon s23 ultra to accept my t-mobile sim. Any insight from someone with more experience is welcomed.
Verizon locks the phone for 60 days. After that, you're good to use whatever SIM you choose (you may have to flash the U1 firmware to get all features working though).

That sounds like it's still locked to me? Are you using the pSIM or the eSIM? There have been some reports recently that the pSIM gets unlocked and the eSIM remains locked to the original carrier but if you're trying to use the pSIM and they say it's unlocked, I don't know.

Ty for the replies. If I figure something out ill post back, in meantime I'm going to try and flash U1 and see if that helps.

Question S23 Ultra (US VERSION) ESIM

Has anyone activated through ESim on Verizon? If you have how easy is it to get it done? I was reading on their site saying Android users should call in to activate the E Sim
First off, screaming with caps on isn't necessary. Secondly I have tmobile and can't get any esim to activate on any network. I've been on support from tmobile, google fi, and samsung and all they tell me is to do a factory reset and I really just don't want to do that. I even did a network reset that didn't help.

Well, def not screaming at anyone I don't know and need help from JS....hmmm, how long have you had your phone? So, you're walking around with a paper weight? It has to be people who ordered the s23 ultra unlocked and activated on Verizon...why is this a big deal? iPhone 14 doesn't even have a physical sim and no issues at all

Is your phone network locked to Tmobile?
@antawnm26 I'm using a physical sim on tmobile which is far from having a paperweight. @cledee I ordered it from Samsung fully unlocked and activated service through tmobile and want to use googlefi as an esim but so far the only answer I get is to fully factory reset and I honestly don't care enough to do that because I finally got everything the way I want.

are you sure you ordered the unlocked version? they were selling the tmobile version directly on the Samsung page as well and it might have sim locked you once you activated.
try a different physical sim if you have one to see if it's locked.

Definitely unlocked. I've used my friends boost sim to verify that after I activated it on tmobile because I didn't want tmobile locking it.

it does that automatically? I know I ordered the unlocked version and will try and esim activate it later today when I get home
When I moved from my Z Fold 3 (I am on T-Mobile) to my S23U, I moved the physical SIM. Once I set up my S23U, I went through the prompts on my phone to convert from SIM to eSIM, everything went smoothly.
My wife's S22U, I followed the same prompts and the swap was quick and easy.

Tried that multiple times with tmobile support and in store a couple times and every time resulted in no esim and a dead disabled physical sim that had to be replaced. And every time I would do a full network reset and no change. Its literally come down to me doing a factory reset and if that doesn't work samsung has said they'd have to replace my device.

Damn, rough. Well, good luck to you. I am not sure what a factory reset will accomplish as I don't think doing that does anything with the eSIM, but hey, if it does not work, at least they will replace it and try and make it right.
I have Google Fi and eSIM doesn't seem to work reliably. I followed one of the instructions out there for iPhone. At first I thought it all worked out well since you first need to be on WiFi to make that work. But once I went outside of the Wi-Fi zone, I lost the cellular data. Even the Google Fi app was complaining about no data. So that was that. I would also lose the signal all together. I have Pixel 7 Pro and Pixel 6 on Google Fi and the eSIM on Pixel phones work without any issues. As far as iPhone is concerned, Google have put steps laid out for that device but it'll only connect to one network and it'll not switch between other network as it does with Pixel ot Samsung's.

Everything else has been thoroughly tested (or at least everything I intend on using) and works perfectly so it's not a big deal to me. If other stuff wasn't working right I'd do it, but right now the inconvenience of not having esim doesn't overcome the inconvenience of reseting a device PLUS most likely having to do it again on a replacement....
I have a Verizon Test Drive eSIM that works, a T-Mobile Test Drive eSIM that works, a Tello (T-Mobile) eSIM that works, and an AT&T Prepaid eSIM that works as well as a physical Boost Infinite SIM (using AT&T).

I got T-Mobile working for me. Just had to call in and give them my eid number.
U1 version, TMO physical SIM and US Mobile (Verizon network) eSIM. All working as it should.
Got it done in less than 30 minutes with first Verizon rep.....now it's backing up from my iPhone 14 pro max
Tmo esim to esim trasnfer from an unlocked S21U to S23U with no problems. I also have GoogleFI sim installed and working as well. I did purchase the unlocked S23U from Google. I called Tmo tech support on the GoogleFi line to have them do the esim transfer.
