Question S23 ultra and long hours of gaming on hand - Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

So as the title says, I have both the 23 plus and the 23 ultra. I also had a s21 ultra.
So that given, I have days that I play very long hours of Diablo Immortal on my phone, holding it in my hands. We're taking 8-10 hours at times
With the 21 ultra and the s23 plus it isn't so bad, as it had rounded corners. With the s23 ultra it's a bit more uncomfortable because the corners are squared off, so it ends up digging into my palm after awhile making it uncomfortable.
So I'm curious if anyone else with an s23 ultra plays long hours of gaming. If so what do you do about when it becomes uncomfortable in your hands? Other than the obvious which is at that point take a break, or use a control of some sort.
Ideas are welcome, and thanks in advance

I don't play, but it comes to my mind as a suggestion to put a massive case with similar angles.

Hi, i play genshin long hours using s23 ultra and lots of PS2 emulator games.
I use Gamesir X3 Pro gamepad. Its really good and comfortable for me.

This is EXACTLY why I post here. I never even thought they had a case with round corners, let alone even thinking of it.
Did a quick search on amazing and they do indeed have them.
They even have slim ones that curve ever so slightly. I think that will be enough of a round edge to cut the sharpness of the corner.
For the life of me I don't know why they made it so square, because the 21 ultra isn't that way. I get the square design from back in the s10 ultra days, but come on. It's like the curved edges, people are so n over the curves, they would rather have flat, at least the majority of people would.
I think in my looking around, the sharpness of the corners was one of the complaints about the 23 ultra.
Thanks for the advice/input/idea, I appreciate it greatly.
I'm torn between these two cases

I'm honestly leaning towards the Anqrp

Yeah, I did a search on those. There are multiple companies that make similar ones, a LOT of them don't support "with case on".
I did find one that advertised "case friendly" and I ordered one. It's called gamevice flex.
I currently use an Xbox controller and bt but I think this will work better.

Ah I see, hope it works well for you.
Personally, i prefer gaming with no case on bcs i want the cooling pad on Gamesir X3 Pro to directly touch the phone's body. More effective cooling. Just my opinion tho

Very initial impressions.

Just, within the hour, received my Ultra. I have not yet even turned it on! I have it charging. I use at present the SGNote 3 and the difference in quality is immediate. I owned the original Xperia Z and the quality of that was simply superb, why I bought the Note 3 I have no idea however.
So pleased to again just hold a device that feels so well made and worth its value in terms of cost also being a flagship of that group. When I hold the Note 3 now...........The Note 3 is a superb phablet but simply lacks that feel of being a flag ship device. I am so pleased to hold the Ultra and experience that feeling of class. Of purchasing something worthy of my cash and its title.
I will post again latter when I have charged the Ultra and turned it on. I am praying I have made the right choice in changing over and the Sony will perform well without the software bugs I have with my Note 3?
Kind regards to one and all.

I came from a note 2 and never going back to samsung. It does everything that samsung does but better and the quality of the Zu is just amazing. I feel my money was well spent. Instead of buying a big piece of plastic.

I can fully understand your sentiments.
My major gripe with Samsung is the materials used in the construction. The Note 3 is one of the most expensive phones on the market. In terms of Android I think it may well be THE most expensive? If other brands like HTC, Apple and Sony can produce top spec phones AND be constructed from quality materials, why cant Samsung. My Note 3 has plastic leather back with plastic pretend stitching along with plastic chrome sides etc? I am amazed Samsung didn't use cling film for the screen! Its a missed opportunity as the Note 3 when bug free works very well indeed.
Presentation has an awful lot to do with how we feel about what we own. For top price models I think it only reasonable to expect top quality materials and finish. Still, Samsung's loss and Sony's gain.
It is also very reassuring to own a device that is NOT region locked and to that end I am able to use it all over the globe unlike the Note 3 that I can only use within Europe! Don't set me off on that one.
Just waiting for them to charge then I can play..............I just have to start to act my age! Scrub that what an awful concept...yuk..

Ex Note 2 user here too. I really was never bother by the plastic to be honest although holding the naked Ultra just feels amazing! Note 4 would have to be more than amazing for me to go back. Besides, knowing samsung they will add .18" again to its size to make it just short of 5.9 so it will take a few more generations to get to the Ultra size lol

I bought the Note 1 the day of release only to sell it some months later because I could not live with its pocket unfriendly size. I recall writing in my Amazon review that a phone that size will never sell in any numbers.....Talk about dropping a brick! The Note series has sold in the millions.
The quality of the Note 1 was far far better than my Note 3. I didn't purchase the Note 2 but understand the general build of the Note 2 was also superior to the Note 3? Enough of the past and the plastics.
I am very pleased with the quality of the screen and the speed of this appears to me just a smooth and fast as my note 3. I think the 3GB of RAM on the Note is needed to run the UI. The Sony is more vanilla in UI and I prefer that.
The colour scheme on the Sony is also beautiful. I prefer the Sony screen to the Samsung though this is choice, both screens are simply superb.
No sooner I turned the Sony on that it updated to 4.3 OS and I then spent some time downloading my apps etc.
This IS one beast of a phablet. I have zero idea how I am going to live with the size but I am going to make ever effort! The SBH52 will help so I don't have to keep taking the Ultra out of pockets. I had to laugh this afternoon as I cant find a single pair of trousers that this beastie will fit into.
I like the SBH52 even though it came without a charger and no instructions at all. Soon found what I wanted on the Sony site.
Early days to write much more. One tiny thing I have noticed is that Sony have made the icons smaller on the screen? I was surprised at that. I would have preferred larger icons.
I hope it proves reliable. I have it housed in a very nice real leather flip case holder. Holder has one small snag in that no space is cut out for the charging mini USB port so I have to remove the Ultra from the case in order to charge it or down load things to my PC. I will see if I can cut out a small space myself tomorrow.
So..........So far all good. Wonderful quality of materials, very different from the Samsung experience. Both good phablets in their own way.
Will be nice to be able to use my phone again in the rain etc.

I recommend leaving your case as is.
=Cut out a space for the mag-dock. It charges slightly faster and it wont wear the O-rings out from opening and closing them a couple times perday.. that way it will continue to protect agains dust and water.

Thank you for the kind and informative reply. There are oddly enough already cut outs for the dock. I have not purchased a dock though as I have read here that the phone does not fit a dock while still in its case only without a case? This would mean every time I need to charge the Ultra I would need to remove it from its cover.
Second point I need to connect my Ultra to my PC to update my documents etc. Is there another way, wifi for eg, of doing this?
I notice that inside the covers of my past Xperia Z that inside the tiny flaps was a white membrane. This was there to show if water had passed the flap and void the warranty? There is no such white membrane inside the flaps on the Ultra. is this correct?
Thanks for your help and support, I appreciate it.

You can get a cable that connects through the mag -dock. Don't need the actual dock.
You can use wifi direct to connect, but that will depend on your computer's hardware. Loads of apps and software to do this through IP address if you need. The only reason I use my Usb is to update firmware using an Ftp and flash tool.

I highly recommend a dock. You will be so sick of opening the USB port every time you're going to charge it, and you'll also wear the rubber seals out (i guess). It's also nice to dock it on the nightstand at night and watch tv shows, like it's a tiny Sony TV.
You can transfer files wirelessly by using an app. AirDroid is very good, but that's more of a full fledged manager that you can transfer big files, delete files, send SMS' and even navigate through the filesystem with. I installed Pushbullet last week and it's an amazing little app. It's so easy to send links, photos, files etc. to and from a computer or even another device. I highly recommend it.
Welcome to the Z Ultra forms, @Ryland Johnson !
I remember you from the Z forum (was contemplating buying the Z)..
The Z Ultra is indeed big, but just use it for a month or so, every other phone will seem tiny then

I was considering the Apple iPhone 5S. I know I know, going over to the 'dark side' The points that prevented me where price, its double the cost of the Ultra, not able to use any sort of expandable memory, not water resistant plus possibly the OS and UI? I wanted to try the newer Apple to see if I liked it any more than I did my first Apple. I have to write that the Apple is a quality product with quality back up. The packaging alone always pleases me when I purchase something Apple. I am just not an Apple OS fan.
Sony are getting there again. I think, I don't know, that some large companies like Sony sat on their laurels for too long and just depended on customer loyalty. Not possible to do that for many years. Pleased to see that Sony are moving in the right direction BUT still have a tad way to go.
A classic example of this is the SBH52. I purchased this with the Ultra. No instructions nor wall charger in the box? Even the packaging is rather cheap and cheerful. Apple just don't do that. Even the boxes Apple products come in is quality cardboard !! This is not a joke, all aspects of marketing need to be spot on to improve or even hold onto ones market place.
Remember HTC? Hardly see a single sale in this country today yet only 5 years ago it was nearly all HTC.
Apple have made a science out of how they sell and their market research is second to non plus their customer satisfaction and relations are superb. Of course there will always be the exception to any rule.
I like what Sony are doing. As I wrote above I think in some areas they have a way to go, they appear to be a getting there though. IF Sony can maintain this trend I think Sony will again start to show profits and the devices they produce will again reach the heights they did in the past.
Now Pioneer have ceased making TV's Sony and Panasonic make some top quality sets. Samsung and LG outsell them all BUT for how long?
Samsung is starting to slip with things like region lock on their phones. I for one will not purchase another Samsung until they drop this absurd behaviour.
I had to factory reset my Ultra last night after spending 12 hours setting it up just as I wanted it. The screen froze and no matter what I did it would not unfreeze. After turning the device on and off several times I was able to get into the settings and reset to factory settings. For around 30 minutes I thought it was going to have to be returned! The programme that caused the problem was 'talk back'.
One point that has concerned me is after a complete factory reset I noticed today that the files I had downloaded from my PC into the memory of the Ultra where STILL THERE! This is bad news as had I returned the Ultra those files would have been open to access. I was under the illusion that a factory reset would reset the phone back to a virgin state. This is not at all the case?
Very early days though and some teething problems can some times occur.

Hi. What an experience that was! No matter how hard I tried to explain the difference between water proof and water resistant some fellow posters just could not accept that their poor Xperia Z's where unsuitable for deep sea diving. The way Sony market the Xperia Z was, in my opinion, very poor. In the manual Sony made it clear with large diagrams that the Z could not be used in sea water nor swimming pool water YET their own advert had the Z being used in a bloomin swimming pool!
I gave up on that subject and just laughed at some of the things people did with their poor phones. Did you see the clips of them being cooked in chocolate and soup etc....Phone had more artificial intelligence than some owners had brains. I am still totally baffled as to why one would take any phone into a shower? How does one wash? To what aim would one need a phone while in the shower? Never mind.

Well folks after 4 days ownership and use I am so far a very happy bunny. Providing I understand I have purchased a phablet and not a tablet nor a mobile phone but the best of both worlds I am content. The SBH52 makes a very good companion device. We have long very hot summers here so where I am going to keep the table while walking about in shorts and T-shirt, I have no idea though? I do like a challenge.:good:

So... does it still have the STUPID screen protector??

AWESOME tablet but a fundamental question: does it still have the EFFIN' STUPID screen protector its predecessor had??
Battery life is a concern as well (the Z Tablet Ultra battery life was pretty poor) but the screen protector is an instant deal breaker!!
I got the Xperia Z Tablet Ultra as soon as it came out especially because of its fantastic light weight but had to return it after a couple of days because it had a screen protector which was an *integral part* of the display (if you removed it, and BTW the glue was very strong, the glass beneath wasn't scratch proof and didn't have an oleophobic coating). The screen protector, of course, assured the display was very much scratch prone AND it also wasn't very slick so not easy to swipe upon (and pretty reflective to boot). B-A-T-S-H-I-T C-R-A-Z-Y.
If they went with a normal "bare" screen, this time, I would be very tempted to get this instead of the Samsung Tab Pro 10.1 (a "feather" itself) I was planning to get. Its even lighter weight is just unbelievable... (I just hope it doesn't come at the battery life's expense too much).
I am now using a G Pad 8.3 not because I like the mini tablets but only because after trying several 10" ones I realized that none of them was very ergonomic for prolonged hand held use because of their weight (and BTW speaking of ergonomy, this stupid new-fangled bezel-less design for tablets is another gripe of mine. Using the G Pad in portrait is bothersome, especially because of its slippery, STUPID metal back, another thing I hate in mobile devices...).
Anyway, I feel like the weight of the new Tab Pro 10.1 was beginning to approach my comfort territory and decided to try it out. Had I found it in black available locally, I would have already picked it out.. But then Sony comes out with this potentially awesome tablet. I just hope they haven't f***ed it up like they did the Z Ultra.
Sorry to sound so negative but I was so pissed when I discovered, after the purchase, the unbelievable stupidity of it all...
P.S. oh and of course NONE of the so called "tech" media "reviews" I read/watched before buying the Z Tablet Ultra pointed that out...
There is Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Tablet Z. You had one or another. Anyway, there is no screen protector. I have the Tablet Z (the 10 inch one) and the battery is awesome, comparable to my mom's iPad 3, which has a battery with almost the double size. I already managed 8h of screen time, with a total of 1d14h of screen (1/3 of the time with WiFi on).
About the screen protector, I've never been bothered by it. It protects the screen, just like it is meant to do, and the screen is perfect, just like any other high end tablet/smartphone I used.
If you like the weight of the G Pad, you probably will feel bothered even with the Z2 Tablet. It's feather light, for a 10 inch tablet. It's somewhat heavy, obviously, compared to them.
And, I can't see a single thing Sony could have screwed with the Z2 Tablet. Maybe you could feel bothered about the somewhat sharp edges. It isn't something that bothers ME on Tablet Z...
From what I've heard it's no longer on the device. I could be wrong but I don't think I am.

I am a heavy poweruser and never use "power saving" settings (i.e. feature crippling settings) and I remember the battery life to be sensibly inferior to the other 10" tablets I have had before it (and after...).
I plan on getting the desktop stand/charger for quick and easy charging when not in use anyway (wireless charging should be *mandatory* for devices with non-removable batteries!!!!).

The Tab Pro 10.1 Wi-Fi model weighs exactly like the iPad Air (the LTE one actually weighs less than the corresponding iPad Air) and handling my brother's iPad Air I felt that the weight was comfortable enough or at least worth giving it a try (especially since I NEVER use cases so the device's weight is all I am going to deal with).
The Z2, which weighs considerably less than those two, really is a no brainer. If it works well is THE 10" tablet to get, at least for me.
I like almost everything about it... weight apart, obviously, I particularly like the 3GB RAM, the 32GB storage option with SD card slot, the powerful SOC, the bezels (OK maybe a bit too big but better too big than too small!!) and I hope that the back is the same very pleasant rubberized one like the Tablet Z which I feel is the ideal solution for hand held devices!!

Anyway the edges didn't really bother me (although I would have much preferred rounded edges) and it seems that on the Z2 they softened the edges a little too.

No, I haven't checked it myself, but many people reported that here, hereand here.
About it on the Tablet Z, well, I agree with you. It was more a opinion statment than a discussion over who's right. As I said, I don't mind it at all. You do mind. That's what matters.
Well, indeed there are ways to screw up, but as I said, for now, I haven't seen anything for now. About battery, indeed it's a matter of use. If it changes anything to you, another time (this with 4.2.2) I managed to get 8h20 of screen on, with a total of 14h of battery. The whole time WiFi was on, I watch some videos on Youtube, used the IR plenty of times and was constantly typing. The brightness was at minimum. There wasn't need for anything above it as the minimum settings is already quite bright, and I was indoors all the time. For my usage, it's a pretty good time.
I haven't managed better battery lately, but my device is rooted, full of apps (a lot of them useless. Don't even know why there are still installed lol) and really tweaked, with Xposed or other stuff.
There is no screen protector on this device.

Thanks, that was what I wanted to hear! :victory:

IMHO the best controller for Android, esp Z Ultra and tablets

Just bought this fella a few days ago, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MUG3JPU/, and LOVE it. The silver buttons are pretty cheapy, but the buttons used for gaming (joysticks, d pad, shoulder buttons, etc) are VERY high quality. It grips my phone very securely, but its in the metallic Incipio case, havent tried without the case yet. Should still hold fine. Best things IMHO are that with the size of the Z Ultra, it is almost a perfect fit, just a cm away from looking like it was made for this phone, and the fact that the buttons are laid out like a PS3 controller.
It will fit a 10 inch tablet, as well, which is a plus (even though I just sold my Note 10.1 2014, and not just have an Onda 972 I havent used in over a year )
Attached a pretty horrible screenshot. Charging port is still easily accessible. Can even still use it like a phone in the gamepad, not like its THAT much *more* unwieldy haha
That looks so bulky. How is it for longer gaming sessions? IMO, the best controller would still be the official PS3 DS controller. :good:
Well yeah the Dualshock is better as far as controls go haha, but I dont have a stand for my Z Ultra and I dont like the screen being positioned in top of the controller so for me it isnt a consideration. In fact I bought this to replace using my Dualshock. I prefer the screen in the middle of the controller, PSP-style.
It really isnt that bulky when you hold it. my hands are average sized and its a comfy fit. For really long sessions it may get tiring, just because the phone itself weighs so much. Its about the size of a standard PC controller.
i like it alot
I bought this controller and I love it it can feet several tablet and it works great on emulators and some regular games

[Q] Anyone tried putting ZU on a VR headset?

That 6.4" display seems to be great for a VR headset.
Anyone have any success?
What model?

I got mine in the colorcross. Had to hacksaw the lips off one side which was easy and you can slide it in from the side.
Only problem is the images are slightly too far apart due to the size of the screen although it does work well in some apps
I actually tried mine with one of those cardboard vr headsets that I bought on Amazon. Works pretty well with some of the vr apps but I couldn't get the magnet switch to work. Again, the ultra was too big for it but I held it in place with one hand and the visuals were pretty awesome. I know they sell extra large kits, but not sure if I want to buy another one just yet.
Sent from my Xperia Z Ultra using XDA Free mobile app

Same here, bought the Colorcross Headset because it said would work with Phonoes & Tablets up to 7".
Yeah...sure...7". Not even the Z Ultra does fit in, had to cut some pieces out to make it fit. No chance that anything bigger than the ZU will ever fit.
Then there was the Problem with the lenses, because of the Size of the Display, they need to be further away from the screen and the space between those two lenses needs to be bigger, I managed to get them out of the Headset and glued them back in (about 3mm further back and 8mm further away from each other) - with a cardboard holder i made myself.
That "thing" looks horrible now, but it does the Job. Although, the experience isn't that great with the ZU because of the low DPI of the Screen.

Mo3d is amazing if you want to watch either 2d or 3d films with the ultra. You can decrease the ipd so the images are moved closer together.

Telescopic gamepad

I usually use a Gamesir 3gs gamepad to play games on all my previous phones . However, with the sheer size and weight of mate 20 x, there is no way to fit it in the clip that comes with the gamepad : https://gamesir.hk/collections/gamepads/products/gamesir-g3s
I really wanted a telescopic gamepad like the Wee2 found here : https://www.amazon.com/Bounabay-Wireless-Telescopic-Bluetooth-Controller/dp/B06XKSNCTM
The problem is none of these gamepads support phones above 7 inches.
The ipega 9083 does the trick but its still bulky : http://ipega.hk/gamehandle/53-98.html
Can anyone recommend a good compact telescopic gamepad?

It fits quite well in the Moga Pro, even with the supplied TPU case on.

Not really much more than it always has. I've always used it with larger phones, so I probably don't notice it anymore. That said, I really like that Ipega controller you linked to.
I use the GameSir 4, but without the case, and it`s a little danger, can slip from the clip, need take care when moving
I finally found an answer here that ipega 9087 doesn't fit.
Maybe this one?

Any suggestions for a telescopic?
I have both iPega 9083 and Betop G1 controllers. My game of choice is is Rangers of Oblivion.
- I prefer the 9083 overall for combat due to the right-side controls, but as other users have said it it bulky and takes up more space in my bag. You also can't easily reprogram buttons to cater for games with non-native support for gamepads.
- the G1 on the other hand is small, light and easy to carry around and charge (USB-C). But the lack of 2-side controls makes combat harder due to lack of tactile feedback buttons. But on the other hand, you can use it for any game with it's own in-built software to program buttons.
I ordered the betop g1 cause of the app assistant , I think it will be easier to map buttons for games through a native app.
However I think that I will hate the fact that it is half a controller.
I can't understand why they didn't give us an option for a whole controller and whoever wanted could use half of the controller.
I'm sure I'll try to find a whole telescopic to fit which won't be as bulky as the 9083...
I finally found a Bluetooth controller that will accommodate the mate 20 x : http://glap.co.kr/en/index.php
Its the Glap controller designed in collaboration with Samsung. It can be seen in the ads for the note 10.
Though it's designed for Samsung phones, it can be used on any other android phone. Here is a video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nl30gMy9I4
The only thing holding me back is the price; starting at 80 dollars I have a hard time forking out the cash.
If anybody pulls the trigger let me know what you think.

I got one of these delivered today. Unfortunately with my Mate 20 X the controller is really laggy and goes crazy duplicating d-pad and button presses etc.
It also shows this same behaviour with my Nvidia shield TV but strangely NOT with my Mi Max 3... That device seems to function just fine. So it looks like certain devices won't be compatible.
It's disappointing, I was expecting a lot from the controller. Especially after buying an ipega 9083 and being disappointed by that one too.

That's odd, I thought it used standard Bluetooth.
I wonder what's causing the incompatibility.
That's very disappointing especially for the price.
Can you give me the link where you bought yours?

Yeah it's really weird and unfortunate. I did email glap straight away but haven't had a response yet.
I bought mine from Amazon
https://www.amazon.co.uk/DRAGON-SLAY-Controller-Controllers-Compatible/dp/B07VFVZX4S/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?keywords=glap+controller&qid=1567751880&s=gateway&sprefix=glap&sr=8-1
EDIT: I'll just add as well that it really is a squeeze and takes a bit of fiddling to fit the 20X in this thing, it starts to bend ever so slightly. With my Mi Max 3, which is ever so slightly taller, it bends even more and I was really uncomfortable having it in the mechanism with the device bending so much.
The good point is that the analog sticks have really good precision and feel nearly as good as the Alps modules you find in the Xbox and DS4 pads. EVERY other extendable controller I've used has been garbage in that respect so I'm pretty gutted about the lag and button pressing issue

I had my hopes up with the deceptive advertising.
They state on the Glap website that the gamepad supports up to 7.5" devices, the Mate 20 x is only 7.2 with very slim bezels and yet still it can hardly fit. I don't see any 7.5 inch phone on the market that would fit.
Did you keep the case on?
Please update us when you get an answer from Glap, otherwise I think I'll settle for an xbox one controller with a clip.

I mean it fits but jeez, it's REALLY tight. I have to take the case off, it simply won't go in with it on.
Glap replied about 10 minutes ago but only to say they're passing it on to the technical team and that they'll get back to me with an answer.
I've got an Xbox controller and clip as well, in terms of the quality it's the best out there along with the DS4. I just wanted the extendable form factor and I've been after a decent one for ages.
