Seamless Updates
You will be automatically notified of any updates available to you. Updates add new features bug fixes and performance enhancements, and you don't need to wait for HTC to get at them! If for any reason you don't receive a notice that there is an update availiable, you can manually check for updates by going to Settings/About/Viper4G ROM Updates.

---------------------- Other Special Features of Viper4G ----------------------
viperControl Script
This script is the main script used to control many features within viperROM. Currently with this script, you can:
Adjust the oc_daemon/viperDaemon
Change schedulers
Adjust voltage (if on a custom kernel)
Manage removed apps
Manage the hosts file
Run "fix permissions" (for FC issues)
Read the cron log
Read the boot log
Enable a faster filesystem
Camera button press to wake the phone
Change fast dormancy

OC Daemon
The OC daemon was created by rmk40 of Team Unity and is the default CPU management in the ROM. I take no credit for the daemon, only the script I made to make it easier to work with. More information can be found here, but I will sum it up and explain the script below...
This daemon, written in C, completely eliminates the need for SetCPU and other CPU controlling apps. The daemon handles min/max frequencies for both screen on and screen off but it has one more trick up its sleeve... It can change the governor INSTANTLY depending on the screen state. I have tested it and I can tell you that it really does work instantly and I think this is going to be a great battery saver! I have set default values within the ROM as follows: Screen Off - ondemand @ 384min/486max and Screen On - ondemand @ 384min/1512max.
If you decide that you want to change the settings of the daemon, here is how you do so...
Open up Terminal Emulator
Type "su" (without the quotes and grant it Superuser access if you haven't already)
Type "vc" (without the quotes)
Enter "1" (without the quotes) and you will see all of your options
Click to collapse
All the settings can be edited from there. If you want to verify that this is working, you can run these commands from adb shell:
Current CPU frequency
Code:
cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_cur_freq
Current CPU governor
Code:
cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor
Current min CPU Freq (you will see this change when the screen state changes)
Code:
cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_min_freq
Current max CPU Freq (you will see this change when the screen state changes)
Code:
cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_max_freq
Here are a few things that you need to know about the script...
You MUST flash a custom kernel to overclock! The ROM includeds the stock kernel that is not capable of overclocking. Well why do you call it the "OC Daemon" then?? Because I didn't make it and that's what they called it AND the daemon is capable of controlling OC. Makes sense to me. If you want to overclock (after flashing a custom kernel, of course), run the script and change the MAX awake to whatever OC you would like.
The phone will boot up and detect if you're using SetCPU or other CPU apps. If you are, the daemon will be DISABLED automatically. If you aren't, the daemon will be enabled.

These FAQs get updated often. Check here before asking!
Why am I presented with "checking for email accounts" followed by "Network Service is unavailable" during Setup? I even have 3G, what gives?
This is a part of the HTC setup designed to help people who use the stock OTA tool to upgrade. It does not apply to those of us who fresh-flash. It is safe to disregard, and does not hinder your ability to setup the phone.

I'm getting an RH-01 error whenever I open up the Play Store.
This happens occasionally, and although we've spent quite a lot of time trying to figure out why, we're not sure why it happens. However, It's very easy to fix; simply go to Apps > All and find and clear data for both Google Play Store and Google Play Services. Reboot, and when you open the Play Store again, it will ask you to agree to the Terms of Service and you'll be back online.

Why isn't my weather showing in my notification area?
Notification weather requires that you have set up a clock widget and placed it on your homescreen at least once before toggling the weather. Once you have done that, and you have successfully toggled weather, you may remove (or keep) the widget at your discretion.

Why do my superuser toast notifications say "Please consider going Pro!"?
As of the most recent update of SuperSu, the developer has added this nag message. While we heartily suggest that you actually go Pro and donate (as he is responsible for SU in almost all of today's custom ROMs), you can turn this behavior off in the Settings menu for Su (scroll all the way to the bottom.

Why is my battery life so bad?
First off, you need to remember something. When your screen is on and you are pperforming constant I/O operations, your battery life will suffer. The most common reasons for users having bad battery life after their first day is quite simple; you just flashed the ROM, and you are excitedly going through it to see what every single tweak does. You may also be restoring apps, setting up new ones, changing the theme, changing the wallpaper, and rebooting multiple times. This is what I like to call "first flash" syndrome. As you use the ROM more and more, it will settle down. We have numerous performance tweaks in place to give you the best performance at the best compromise for battery life.
If it's still terrible, use CPU Spy (provided) to see how long each frequency is being locked into. You can also use BetterBatteryStats to see if something is wakelocking you. Viper4G does not ship with a custom kernel, and VC offers the ability to underclock (but not over) at the moment. If you've done all that and still can't figure it out, talk to us.

Click to collapse
Why is my phone lagging?
This is an extremely difficult question to answer, but please, before you post about lag, give the ROM 10-15 minutes from when it finishes booting to do so. We have several time based scripts that are designed to "clean up" and you'll want to wait for those to finish. We did the best we could to give you the best possible performance without compromising too much battery life. It's a delicate balance. If you've done that, and you've followed the same instructions in the battery post, then talk to us.

Where are those horizontal CM-style quick-settings I used to have?
By default, they are hidden. To activate them out of the box, press and hold on the date in the notification pulldown. To customize whether or not quick launch will appear if you press and hold twice, check the Statusbar page of VenomTweaks. While you can have both horizontal and vertical (classic) quick settings enabled, we recommend against it, as certain options conflict. For instance, if you turn on the torch with vertical quick settings, the horizontal quick settings Torch toggle will not turn it off.

I flashed ElementalX, why am I having issues?
With all due respect to that developer, Elemental is not a true custom kernel and therefore cannot be overclocked and underclocked by traditional methods. We recommend that you not overclock for battery and stability reasons, but if you genuinely would prefer to, we strongly advise you wait until true custom kernels with source are released. There is also some rather dim-witted rumor going out that removing cronstart you can make Elemental "work". This is not true, and will cause your phone to lag HARD after a couple hours of use. Please only take file removal and editing advice directly from the team; we put this ROM together and if we need you to remove something (which is doubtful to begin with) we will ask you ourselves. We are told that you should be able to overclock fine now, but we don't use or support Elemental. Please direct any questions concerning it to flar2.

What is Fapple, and how can I use it in this ROM?
Fapple is a modification made by steal25 and his development crew to eliminate HTC's "App Associations" (which had to be put in place due to an Apple patent issue). App Associations takes the place of the "Complete Action With" dialog. Although the Viper4G team is satisfied with this solution, we understand that users want the original back. To install Fapple, you must select "Custom Installation" when in AROMA while flashing. You will have an option to enable Fapple. Don't forget, OTA updates may remove Fapple; if they do, you will be notified that you must reflash Fapple. Due to the nature of Fapple, it must be customized on a per-ROM basis, so we recommend against flashing a Fapple zip directly from il Duce's thread.

Why is the AROMA setup tinted blue? Is my device broken?
No, your device is not broken. You are using the latest TWRP (2.4.1.0), which has issues with AROMA's colors right now. It is purely aesthetic and does not interfere with your ROM installation in any way. When Amarullz (developer) updates AROMA, we will update the ROM zip and the colors will be back to normal. It is not considered high priority, so bear with it for a bit.

There's a new tweak in the Button settings for "Quick Flashlight". What does it do?
It's fairly self explanatory; when the screen is off, pressing and holding the power button will instantly toggle the flashlight. Letting go of it will instantly toggle it back off. There's a caveat though; pressing and holding the power button for 10 seconds or more initiates a hard reboot. This function is coded into the chip, and is not controlled by Android. It's so that you always have an escape chute if you are bootlooping, frozen, or otherwise trying to get back to recovery, since we can't pull our batteries out. The Quick flashlight function is for people who don't want their capacitive keys mapped to Flashlight but want to be able to quickly use their flashlight for really short snippets of time. If you find yourself needing to use the flashlight for longer than that, use a button remap on the Home button from lockscreen, that will be on for as long as you want it. We provide this option because we want to provide our users with choice (with the hope they are intelligent enough to understand the catches to certain tweaks).

Where is FAPPLE for the latest build (3.1.2)?
Fapple takes a fair amount of time to port and must be customized to each ROM that it is applied to. We're currently in the process of deciding what to do concerning Fapple. The majority of us use App Associations so it is not currently a high priority, but work/testing is always happening with the team. Rest assured, when it is ready, you will be alerted, and it will most likely be a no-wipe flashable zip, but again, no promises or ETAs from us. We wanted to give you the latest rebased ROM without waiting any further. Fapple is finished and available in the main post for 3.1.2.

Some of the statusbar themes and fonts are giving me bootloops and force closes. What gives?
We apologize. The database which you query for new themes is a universal database that still has remnants of ICS in it, as other Viper ROMs access it as well (such as Viper for the Evo 3D). At the current time, we are doing our best to figure out how we want to seperate these, but for now, please be careful what fonts and status bar themes you choose to download. We know it's not an ideal situation, please bear with us.

Venom SideBar/Small Apps Explained
First to setup sidebar, find it in the app drawer, its called "Side Panel"
when you click on the app icon, it will load the launcher
to switch between recent apps, regular applications and small apps, tap the view icon at the bottom or side of the launcher
to access the sidebar settings, long press on the view icon...
you will be able to:
change position of the sidepanel (left, right, bottom of screen)
open the panel by touching area of screen
width of touch area (if you set it too big it might interfere with typing on kb)
you can select the default small apps and default regular apps to show in the sidebar launcher:
do not update the small apps in the market if they prompt you to do so...they will foreclose as they are heavily modified to work with sense!
heres how the panel looks in other angles as well:

***IF you are still on an aosp or 1.43 (stock release) kernel
download boot.img above and move to your fastboot /dir
boot to hboot after installing rom
plug phone into computer and make sure it says "fastboot usb" on it in hboot
cd to fastboot /dir in terminal
fastboot flash boot boot.img
Reboot the device and enjoy!
Q: How do I install the rom?!
A: Installation instructions above.
Q: Whats the md5 sum thing?
A: It ensures, that the rom is downloaded correctly and completly to avoid weird issues when installing/using the rom. Google for "md5 sum checker" and you should find what you need.
Q: My phone stucks on HTC splash screen
A: Where you testing aosp or something for someone? If so you will need to flash the stock boot.img or a modded one meant for sense.
Q: Whats the boot.img. Why we need to flash it?
A: The boot.img is the kernel and have to be flashed if you want your rom running well. HTC Dev Unlock doesnt allow to install the kernel directly when installing the rom in recovery, thats why you need to install in manually.
Q: I found a theme or mod, will it work on this rom?
A: It's NOT recommended to use mod/themes that dont clearly state, that they are compatible with our rom. Thems/Mods always use framework files which will brake mods/stuff in our rom.
Q: My question is not listed here, what to do?
A: Ensure you used the xda search, google and your brain before asking a question in the thread. If you cant find an answer yourself we will answer your question for sure! (-:
Q: Whats that cm statusbar brighntess mod?
A:
Q: Whats the Ultra/smooth rosie?
A: Your HTC Widgets got some kind of 3D effect which may make your Rosie laggy. You can see that 3D effect clearly on the HTC 4x4 Weather widget.
Smooth: Flattens all widgets besides the one you start scrolling
Ultra: Flattens all widgets for best performance
Q: The cube effect isn't working on the app drawer
A: The cube effect just appears when you swype from the all over the frequent to the download tab.
Q: What are the correct sizes for the App drawer and notfication pulldown background?
A: Try 720x1280.
Q: What are the correct sizes for custom carrier logo?
A: Try 100x100
Q: Will there be CRT On/OFF support in the next release?
A: NOT possible, because HTC changes some required code in their libs, that makes it impossible.
Q: Several HTC Widgets are missing - can't add them to my homescreen.
A: Settings->apps->all apps: choose htc sense and clear data.

looks good guys!!!
Does that make me first? Damn you!....all kidding aside, you all are gonna love this. Best rom I've run to date on any phone. Mad props to Nit and Andy for putting this together for the Inc 4g.
looks nice! I have been looking at the viper roms on the one x, does this have all the features of that or is it different?
Noticed a couple things.
1) Changing the ringtone to old phone from the default which is sense. Upon rebooting it reverts back to default.
2) When choosing not to install Backup Assistant in Aroma, it still has one component of Backup Assistant still installed.
2.5) Same with Facebook.

report it in bug tracker : http://code.google.com/p/viper-lte/issues/list
best way to report is like you did, here in the thread, and then in bug tracker so it can be farmed out

the mods in this version of viper are based off of the 1.0-1.0.x releases for the sensation and one x which were the most recent when we started working on the rom (way back when)....since summer is my most busy time of the year, it took 2 months to do what i could do in 2-3 weeks during the year and as the other roms updated it would have taken too long for me to continually update as they went
we will update the rom continually though and at some point it should catch up to the other devices :fingers-crossed:

I've compiled a list that I will throw up in the bug report. All fairly superficial with the ringtone just being an annoyance.
Can anyone test voice dialing through bluetooth? I get "Voicedialer has stopped." but I just want to confirm it's an issue for others before I report it. My bluetooth headset isn't the best.

Ok tried reflashing, then booting in and changing ringtone to Old Phone. Rebooted and it was back at the "Sense" ringtone. Tried changing the ringtone in "Sound" and "Personalize" just in case, same results, reverts to "sense" ringtone.
Looking in System/etc i see "init.d" folder with current date. 4 files inside.

Credit where credit is due:
As with any open source stuff, some of this work is my own, most of it comes from other sources. So in addition to my own work (mostly in the "mean" category), here's a quick thanks to those of you who contributed knowingly (thank you) and not-so-knowingly via open source 5 finger discount (thank you just the same: your stuff is good and that's why I used it). Sometimes it's not entirely obvious where the source started so if I missed someone, please let me know and I'll add you. Also, I'm careful to only include other work where the author does not specify any usage restrictions or has given approval. If you believe, however, that I've included something that shouldn't be in this ROM, please just PM me.
Credit Scott for the deodexed stock base!
Thanks banccalif for the graphics!
Other credits: I list them in the features section above and give links to the original works so you can donate to other devs for specific mods you like!
Want my stuff?:
I list credits in the features section above and links to original works: if you see something credited there and you want to use it, click the link and seek permission from the developer I've credited. If you see something in this ROM and I don't reference some other source, I probably coded it myself. If you want it: take it and use it in your ROM, your theme, whatever you like. I just ask that you please credit me. I'm a firm believer in Android and open source so you don't even have to ask. Anything you see here... it's yours for just the price of a simple line crediting me. I always share as I believe that's the way we developers put the power in Android... and one way we can fight "the Apple brainwashing machine".
Below are some pointers on updating your firmware, installing recoveries, modding, etc. before we get to the good stuff (installation and downloads).
CHANGELOG:
See post #2
Problems after you flash?:
PLEASE DO NOT REPORT PROBLEMS IN THIS THREAD UNTIL you've done a full wipe and fresh install to see if that cures it. I know I should really just do like most devs and proclaim REQUIRES FULL WIPE/FRESH INSTALL on every version. That saves me a lot of headaches but I know what a PITA a fresh install can be even with MyBackup or Titanium at your disposal. So it never hurts to try just a flash without a full wipe, but if you run into any HINT of a problem... anything at all... don't report the problem in this thread until you've tried a full wipe and fresh install first to see if that cures the problem!
Note regarding tweaks: don't flash tweaks or themes on top unless you KNOW the tweak/theme is compatible with the the LL4 base
Installation - a final note:
First, the usual disclaimers. I supply the ammo, you use it. ROMS don't kill phones, n00bs do. Use this ROM at your own risk as I won't be responsible for bricks or any other untoward happenings. I spent a lot of time ensuring that the stuff in this ROM is fast, smooth, and compatible. But... it always helps to have some familiarity with flashing ROMs to keep yourself safe.
Download links are below
If you've never rooted your phone and it is completely stock on the latest LL4 base, I would recommend rooting your phone using this thread. It's the easiest method I've found and when you're done, your phone is completely prepped for flashing ROMs
Now to installation of the ROM itself...
Always make a Nandroid backup before installing anything on your phone!
On first install of MeanBean, do a full wipe (at least a factory reset)
Subsequent updates: no wiping necessary BUT...
If you have any trouble at all, do a full wipe and then reinstall
Install using TWRP recovery
On first boot, open "Power Toggles" app and set up your desired toggles
... you're gonna break it!
Don't flash any other mods, tweaks, or themes unless they specifically say they are built for (the latest version of) MeanBean or you WILL break features in this ROM and/or cause instability! While this ROM is designed to have the general look/feel of the stock ROM, it is highly customized under the hood and mods, tweaks, or themes not designed specifically for this ROM will cause problems. If you want this ROM to run perfectly without any issues, do not flash anything on top.

Sticky Debloating (v1.06 and up)
Sticky debloating is done using a simple install script located in /data/MeanBean.blt. Here are the instructions on how to use sticky debloating:
First time you use sticky debloating
We set up sticky debloating by flashing the bloat definitions template which contains a list of common bloat items:
Reboot to TWRP and flash /sdcard/MeanBean/stickybloat.zip (also located in /data/MeanBean/stickybloat.zip if not on your SD card)
The bloat definitions file (/data/MeanBean.blt) will be created
This file does nothing until you edit it (below)
Boot normally and continue below to edit the bloat definitions
Each time you change the bloat definitions
We simply edit the /data/MeanBean.blt definitions to our liking:
Use Root Explorer or the included ES File Explorer in root mode and open /data/MeanBean.blt (don't use a PC to pull/push the file else it may be corrupted)
Follow the directions at the top of the file, editing each line as appropriate for your debloating
Back out of Root Explorer/ES File Explorer, saving the file on the way out
If you used ES File Explorer, it fouls up permissions on the saved file: long hold on the file after saving it, then scroll to "Properties" at the bottom, click "Change" and check ALL permission boxes!
Reboot to TWRP and relfash the ROM! You must reflash the ROM to make the changes stick
Now each time you dirty flash an updated version of the ROM, it will be debloated
Notes on debloating
Debloating is done via a simple script that removes what you don't like: the ROM install script runs this debloating script each time as part of the install process, so installing a new ROM version 1.06 or later will result in the ROM automatically being debloated. Obviously if you get creative and do other stuff in this debloating script, adding items that are not in the standard template. If you run into trouble though, you can always reflash /sdcard/MeanBean/stickybloat.zip (or /data/MeanBean/stickybloat.zip) to "nullify" the debloating and start over.
Debloating example - debloating Zappos
Original code in the MeanBean.blt file:
Code:
## Amazon Zappos
#rm /system/app/Amazon_Zappos.apk
To debloat, simply remove the hashtag on the code line like this:
Code:
## Amazon Zappos
rm /system/app/Amazon_Zappos.apk
Sticky Settings
Options that affect ROM performance and appearance can be found in the sticky settings Aroma installer. This file can be found on /sdcard/MeanBean/stickysettings.zip after flashing the ROM. Simply flash the file via TWRP recovery and select the options you desire. Once you make your selections, your selections will survive dirty flashes (for example, when you flash updates without wiping data)... hence the name "sticky settings". Just select what you want once and forget about it!
Note about the version number that displays on sticky settings install
The version number that displays when you run the sticky settings corresponds to the last version of MeanBean where the sticky settings had to be changed. As a result, the version number of the sticky settings will rarely match the version number of the ROM because the sticky settings are not changed with every ROM version.
Available sticky settings
4x4 or 4x5 launcher (default 4x4)
Infinite scrolling - whether or not the launcher wraps around at the end points
Choice of dim/bright status bar icons (If using the bright status bar, test for potential screen burn-in from time to time to be sure bright mode isn't causing image retention)
Screen on w/new SMS/MMS - whether or not the screen wakes with incoming new text messages (default no screen wake)
Keyboard auto-correct - auto correct for the Samsung keyboard
Palm swipe (R to L) to sleep
Palm swipe (down or up) to go home
4 finger touch to go home
Ringer fade - whether or not the ringer starts out at low volume, then changes to full volume (default no volume fading)
Display AM/PM - whether or not "AM" or "PM" is displayed with the clock on the status bar (default no AM/PM)
Toggles - display the stock toggles/quick settings or no toggles (default no toggles: use included Power Toggles or some other choice if you like)
Zero wake lag - whether or not to get rid of screen-on lag (default: get rid of the lag - see below for full details on what this does)
SD card read-ahead - set your SD card read ahead buffer (default 2048K)
De-ASEC - decrypts encrypted apps and places them in the normal /data/app location. Once enabled, just turn screen off/on to de-ASEC installed apps.
Notes on Zero Wake Lag
While most of the options in the sticky settings are pretty self explanatory, I would like to explain wake lag and how to use the zero wake lag option. The zero wake lag option s turned ON by default: meaning you will not get any wake lag. Read on, however, should you feel like controlling this option yourself.
What is wake lag?
Wake lag is a delay (usually between a half second and 2 full seconds) between when you press the power button and when the screen actually turns on from a "sleeping" state. Contrary to what I found in various forums about this popular topic, wake lag is not caused solely by the amount of time it takes for the processors to wake from a deep sleep, nor do the dozens of suggestions that I found make much of a difference: things like turning off the ripple effect, pop up note, ink, or even freezing certain processes. Processor wake time is only part of the equation. In going through system logs in detail, I found many factors that actually added to the amount of delay you get between when you press the power button and the phone is actually usable. Other things such as sensors powering up (accelerometer and light sensor for example) and whether or not you have an external SD card installed drastically affect how much delay is present on any particular phone. I measured the lag on my own phone at 1.7 seconds which, as you can imagine, got old pretty quickly.
But I don't have any lag at all. What's up with that?
If you don't have lag, your phone is never going into a deep sleep. In my own investigation, I found that it takes nothing more than a single misplaced wakelock.acquire command after the screen turns off to keep your phone from going into deep sleep. For your phone to enter deep sleep, each and every wakelock.acquire must be followed by a wakelock.release. That means every app you have installed must behave perfectly and never have an "acquire" without a paired (and properly timed) "release" for deep sleep to occur. Because the processors do take some time (I found about 750ms) to come back on from deep sleep, if you have no wake lag at all, it's safe to say something is misbehaving and creating a wake lock on your phone. If that's the case, the zero wake lag option will have no noticeable effect on your phone.
I turned on the zero wake lag option and I have no more wake lag, but won't my battery die quickly now?
The zero wake lock fix does create a wake lock that prevents your phone from going into deep sleep, but read on: from what I've found, I think this is a good thing! MeanBean already underclocks the processors when the screen is off, which means with your screen off, you only have one core activated and it is running at a maximum of 1 Ghz. In addition, the governor is set to not ramp up frequency as quickly as when the screen is on. This means with the screen off, you have one processor running at slow speed (usually around 200 Mhz) at a very low voltage, using very little juice, but up to 1 Ghz of processing power is still available if something needs to run with the screen off like a media server. The radio in your phone will use far more power than the CPU that is left running to satisfy the wake lock.
Also consider this! With the zero wake lag option turned off, your phone goes into deep sleep in less than one second when you press the power button to turn the screen off! That may sound like a good idea at first glance, but from what I've seen in the logs, I doubt it. I ran the phone normally (allowing deep sleep) and I found that particularly for someone like me who gets a lot of pushed emails, the phone was being forced to wake up hundreds of times each hour! That means if you leave your phone unplugged overnight for example, by the time you wake up, your phone will have shut down and then reactivated and re-powered-up the processors and sensors potentially thousands of times! Is all that waking/sleeping/waking/sleeping good for the sensors and the system in general? I'm not going to say for sure but logic would tell me no, particularly when other processes like maps/google location is already pinging those sensors every few minutes. In fact, I tested the phone over an 8 hour time period with zero wake lag both on and off and my battery life actually got significantly better with the zero wake lag option turned on. Presumably this is because the phone wasn't constantly powering down (and back up) a bunch of circuitry. In the 8 hour time period, I lost 10% battery with zero wake lag turned off and only 6% with it turned on!
Now, if you put your phone in airplane mode and you have nothing running that tends to wake the system a lot, maybe your battery will do better with zero wake lag turned off. It's safe to say YMMV but the option is there to switch zero wake lag off if you wish.
OK my friends. This is my first ROM for a Samsung device. Been developing like crazy for Sense ROMs for a while but just got a Note 2 and thought I'd spread some Mean love over here. The initial release will give us a good start but being new to Samsung and Touchwiz, I would appreciate some feedback on what's hot for this device, what you want to see, any bugs that might need fixing (I've been known to fix a few Sense/HTC bugs before), and so on. This will be a work in progress as we add niceties, but those who know me know that my first order of business is making a ROM that is great on both performance and battery life but never compromising reliability.
See you in the thread!
Regards,
Mike

Right?!
I'll be flashing this to check it out. Now if only we could get an AOSP-looking version with that brightness slider and quick settings removed, I'd be in heaven!
Happy to see you developing for Samsung devices now, Mike. I can already tell this rom looks really promising. Going to give it a spin now.

Thanks for the welcome. I'm having fun developing for a new device. I've only had the phone 3 days so I'm going to rely on you guys to let me know what idiosyncrasies are commonly tweaked/fixed on this device. It'll take me some time to figure out which tweaks are commonly made to this device. Example: on the HTC/Sprint devices, it was common to fix the 1x/3G indicator so it doesn't "lie" to you, fix SMS time stamps when roaming, add back the missing "Menu" button to the launcher, and so on. I don't have enough experience with this device yet to know many of those just because I suspect there's a lot of Samsung related stuff I haven't even tried yet, so feedback is appreciated as we move forward.

Re: [ROM] MeanBean v0.1 | Mar 12 | LL4 | Mods | Batt saver
Some ideas that seem big in other roms..clock choices(center.left.none)change able color schemes in notification bar.i always push multi window control, walkman, awesome beats, torch lucky patcher and rom toolbox to any rom i personally run, more themeing customibility as not to many verizon roms have this ability. Inverted apps, choice of kernels, sd swap, and the list goes on..hope you run with the info as not many devs making roms for verizon, in comparison too att or sprint. Thanks for adding choice, hope to see it grow into a rom i will eventually flash.

That seems odd. I would think Verizon is the most popular and would draw the most customers for this device. I can't imagine more of these would be sold on Sprint or AT&T. Unless Verizon just has too many choices (in smartphones)?

Not that i care..... but i hear its really tough to remove the brightness slider like its built into the framework or something.
So either avoid that or tackle it if you want something super hard to do

If you're talking about the brightness slider that takes up room in notifications, I already did that. That part was easy. But maybe you are referring to something else?

-There are probably more small changes that I'm forgetting. I'll edit this post as they come to me.
-Sharkie405 for the base. See the stock ROM Change Logs for additional base ROM credits.
-dsixda for the kitchen.
-thicklizard for his Arc-Reactor kernel.
-Captain_Throwback for cooking advice.
-OMJ for his latest ROM that I used as my go to when I wasn't sure of the right way to do something.
-See the Change Logs for individual mod credit.
-I recommend doing a full/super wipe of some sort before your 1st flash of this ROM. Personally, I use Superwipe.
-You may wonder while the ROM is flashing, WTF is up with the terminal text being misaligned. Actually, it's not misaligned. I use a slightly modified version of TWRP 2.6.3 that, for some unknown reason, increases the font size in the terminal screen. It's bigger and easier to read. It's one that Captain_Throwback made. You can find this version in the 8th post of THIS thread. If you flash this ROM with Cap's version, it will all be perfectly centered like it should be. So, do me a favor and if you're not already using it, flash it and use it. It's better...
-ArcReactor v.44 kernel
-This ROM uses Arc-Reactor kernel v0.44 (max oc - 1.70) by thicklizard. This kernel includes sweep2xxxxxx features. If you've never used s2w, I highly advise you read that thread to familiarize yourself with that feature. Otherwise, your phone will be doing all types of crazy things and you won't know why.
If you want to change the sweep settings, go to /system/etc/init.d/00S2W and open it with a text editor. You will see this line:
echo '5' > /sys/android_touch/sweep2wake
You can change the '5' to whatever number gives you the sweep settings you want. '0' will turn them all off. You have to reboot to run the script again before your new settings will take effect. How do I know what sweep settings I want, you ask? This is why you need to read the 1st post of the Arc-Reactor thread. I plan on writing a script/s that will automatically change the settings, I just haven't gotten around to it yet cuz "5' is how I always keep it set. If I'm not mistaken, there are already scripts/apps that will change s2w settings or turn it on/off. I can't vouch for them though cuz I haven't used them.
Besides the fact that I think this kernel is bad ass, is the fact that ThickLizard is a great guy. He supports his work to the fullest and is always willing to help out anyone that has questions or problems. He represents what this should all be about and he knows his sh**.
This kernel runs great as is, in my opinion, but check out "Kernel Tuner" in the Play Store if you're interested in serious tweaking.-This ROM is built from the 3.16.651.3 OTA stock ROM at the bottom of this post (Sense 4+/JellyBean 4.1.1).
-ROM wipes data, system, cache and dalvik-cache.
-Posts to do with SharkieROM-LTE v2.5.1 start at post #325
- The 5x6 app drawer mod causes the icon text in 'add shortcuts to Home' to be cut off. It looks like that font size was never changed. I might look into it, but probably not. It's not at all a big deal to me.
- Let me know what you find...
Not all that important OP thoughts on this ROM...
This ROM is still basically a stock ROM with a few tweaks. If you were feeling my stock ROM then you'll probably enjoy this one as well. It's stable and fast, IMO. The only big tweak that I'd like to have and haven't quite figured out yet is EQS (Rosie landscape on/off and the Home Screen menu, primarily). The one in OMJ's mod pack causes settings and random sense widget force closes. Adding EQS is high on my to do list, but you gotta put it out at some point. There's always more to do.
There are a lot of apps in this ROM. It's got all the free apps that I like to have. It's my ROM after all. Be ready to remove some apps. I love not having to worry about space anymore with this phone and so I take full advantage of it.
I also only want to worry about 1 ROM. So I'm not going to make an odexed version. If you'd like an odexed version, use OMJ's tool to do so. IT'S SUPER EASY, trust me.
I also wanted to say thanks again to all those that support/supported my stock ROM. Since it's release it's had just shy of 2000 downloads total. I realize that's not a whole lot, but it was more than I ever expected a stock ROM to get, especially so late in the game. So THANK YOU.
Some v2.5 S-ON thoughts and my experience with S-ON flashing this ROM can be found HERE.

gonna need this for later.
What exactly are you guys confused about?
Is it because there is already a stock 3.16.651.36 ROM here at XDA? Yeah, I get that. Does that mean there can't be two? No. Maybe there's more than two. Who cares. There's room here for everyone's work. This is not kanged.
Is it because this is not a "custom" ROM? To make a "custom" ROM you need a base. A lot of people have used diestarbucks stock ROM as a base. I didn't want to do that. I wanted to start from scratch on my own. This stock ROM is not my end goal, it is just my base. But I used the tools and made it myself and to be honest, yes, I'm proud of that.
Is it because this ota was released a long time ago by phone standards? That's true, but I only got this phone a little over a month ago. So it's new to me and it's still the latest official update released.
Is it because the wallpaper says PPCGeeks? PPCGeeks has always been and always will be my "phone forum" home sweet home. Times are slow on that site these days so I figured I'd post this over here where more traffic is to see if I can get some more feedback. Plenty of ROMs are posted here with links to various other sites. I don't see the problem with that.
If you are genuinely confused about something, then say what it is. Otherwise, please refrain from cluttering this thread.

I think the more people that jump in , the better. Always good to see new people here. I don't use sense ever (about to give sense 5 a shot, though), but I think it's cool to see new people jumping in.

This ROM will be left as just a stock base. I don't plan on updating it at all unless someone points out a major bug.
I'm already working on my SharkieROM-LTE. I don't when I'll be at a point that I feel it's unique enough to post up as a custom ROM. I've still got a lot more learning to do. Thanks for stopping in

Note regarding tweaks: don't flash tweaks or themes on top unless you KNOW the tweak/theme is compatible with the the DMC3 base
Read the "The international base and VZW compatibility" below
The international base and VZW compatibility
Many people ask "how is ICE different than the regular MeanBean for the VZW Note 2"? With MeanBean ICE, you get Samsung's most recent software which is more up-to-date than what Verizon releases. As a result of running a more recent version, the international base is slightly faster at opening, switching, and closing apps and some other operations thanks to Android 4.1.2: Verizon's latest is based on Android 4.1.1. The international base also gives you access to your Samsung account which you don't get with Verizon.
Verizon Visual Voicemail
While MeanBean ICE is "patched" for Verizon compatibility and every effort has been made to address the "weak spots" reported in many threads by Verizon users running the international ROM base such as GPS and VZW app compatibility, a few people have reported difficulty in playing back messages if you subscribe to Verizon Visual Voice Mail. I've addressed these to the extent possible and for most people, all VZW apps will work properly. If, however, you are one of the unlucky few (or maybe I should say lucky as I'm about to save you $3/mo) who are unable to use Visual Voice Mail on your particular device (there seems to be a lot of variation between devices), I would suggest dumping the (truly non-visual) Visual Voice Mail and spending the ~15 minutes setting up a free Google Voice Lite account to handle your voicemail. It is far more powerful than the Verizon VVM and is actually visual (transcribes)... all without the $3/mo fee! Other than what has been mentioned, you should find that all aspects of your phone (including Verizon apps) work properly. As it is quite an effort to address every unique user's setups, if you do run into any difficulty, just reply here in the thread.
GPS
GPS is working 100%. GPS will work for about 95% of people right out of the box, no extra effort required. If you have trouble with GPS, however, just flash my VZW based MeanBean first, get a GPS lock, and then flash back to MeanBean ICE. That should correct the issue for those unlucky few who have trouble. There appears to be some non-volatile RAM associated with the GPS that is unaffected by wiping (factory reset) and this process appears to clear/fix those rare GPS issues.
... you're gonna break it!

Sticky Debloating
Debloating example - debloating Google Play Books
Original code in the MeanBean.blt file:
Code:
## Google Play Books
#rm /system/app/Books.apk
To debloat, simply remove the hashtag on the code line like this:
Code:
## Google Play Books
rm /system/app/Books.apk
Choice of dim/stock or bright/transparent status bar (If using the bright status bar, test for potential screen burn-in from time to time to be sure bright mode isn't causing image retention)
Screen on w/new SMS/MMS - whether or not the screen wakes with incoming new text messages (default no screen wake)
Keyboard auto-correct - auto correct for the Samsung keyboard
Palm swipe (R to L) to sleep
Ringer fade - whether or not the ringer starts out at low volume, then changes to full volume (default no volume fading)
Display AM/PM - whether or not "AM" or "PM" is displayed with the clock on the status bar (default no AM/PM)
Alrighty Meanies...
Recommend a clean install with this one but if you're on the regular MeanBean and you're bored, it is possible to dirty flash over to this! If you have any problems though, I won't have anything to do with you until you've tried a clean install to see if it clears the problem.

Ha. That's assuming Android File Host and Dev Host both cooperate. They appear to be going slower than usual, but still moving.

Everything is updated in the OP and I removed all versions except the latest 0.3 which appears to be running smoothly. Since I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) that I'm the only one trying to bake VZW apps into the international base, what I'd like people to report is whether or not all your VZW apps are working and all the functions within them. I tested what I could test like the My Verizon widget that shows data usage, Voicemail, etc. but I can't test Visual Voicemail because I don't have it.
So... need some feedback please.
Thanks!
Mike

@mikeyxda
I use your Zero Wake Lag mod on the Galaxy S3 and it works great. But I wonder if it`s so healthy for the CPU to be active all the time and having no deep sleep. Could it it have more wearout when it`s active all the time?

After a few days of magisk rom tinkering I'm thinking it may be the way forward... Hardly any risk, easy to roll back and much smaller Downloads, can't see any negatives at this point other than no aroma, the alternative is quite complex
Cheers mate, gonna get this updated version right now! Not that I've had any issues with the "betas" Nice to be back on the LeeDroid as the LeeVoid was getting boring.

Think I will get the OP7pro5G when EE start selling it, as I'm getting fed up with the lack of updates from HTC and the 12 just got some weird quirks that I'm not happy with plus the battery is draining to fast for my liking.

Hehe yeah been HTC since the Wildfire and almost every "flagship" after so it's a bit weird going from HTC. But HTC is going backwards compared to the competition and having Q even if it still is beta on several different makers phones before HTC even got P released on their current "flagship" that would been impossible to think 2-3 years ago.
I just don't see HTC coming back from this and a some of the things they did on the 12 (volume buttons arrrrrggghhhh) plus the development community is almost gone. So for me I think the time has come to explore something else and I bet the OP will be cheaper than the next HTC with the same (or very similar) spec with active development/support from OP compared to HTC I can't just stay with HTC for the sake of it I need a phone that I like/enjoy/works for me.
So join me on the 5g side and develop some Leedroid for it you know you want too

You need it to test the 5G speeds :good:
I'm gonna try and fund it with trade in of the u12+, then I won the yearly Fantasy Football league (again, have become a tradition to put the winnings to a new mobile ) and hopefully some nice winners on the GG's (or will have to make up the difference on my own.

Oh Lee this is awesome! I take it you got your U12 back from repairs finally?!? Unfortunately I can't use this as we still haven't received the 1.53 update in Australia yet (don't think we will now) so I'll wait for the next release but this is great to see you're back with us again!

Oh Lee this is awesome! I take it you got your U12 back from repairs finally?!? Unfortunately I can't use this as we still haven't received the 1.53 update in Australia yet (don't think we will now) so I'll wait for the next release but this is great to see you're back with us again!

HTC DE Hooked me up after my nightmare :highfive:
As far as compatibility goes I haven't checked other bases, but full framework is included in the magisk ROM
@LeeDroid
Thanks for your work! Glad that you are now with u12+.
I have question... U12+ has camera2 api "FULL" support... i suppose that we need HAL3 for more google cam moded aps to work!
Can you do any magic there?
Thanks again!

Good to see they sorted you out! Any ideas if it's even worth trying with my base or should I just sit and wait?

Been looking at it, not sure at this point, you should be able to install Google camera from the play store as I have included support files, slow Mo crashes at present
