Xda as a modem doesn't work on XP? - MDA, XDA, 1010 General

Hey guys you did great job on Xda,keep on good work. I'm from Taiwan. You can't believed we Xda-users in Taiwan get even less help and information from our Gprs providers, Thanks to HTC's cocky attitude toward users-HTC will pay for it in the future if it keeps this 'ask me no more and upgrade no-go' attitude.
Anyway I tried to use Xda as a modem for my notebook, I did everything told, and dialed connect number "*99***1#" as the provider told me for their common gprs phone users, but nothing really happen. Could it be I'm using XP-professional on notebook and settings aren't right? Or is there any different way to dial from notebook using Gprs connection ? Thanks for HELP!!!

UK O2 XDA in North America triband?

HI I don't know whether this mystery has already been laid to rest but I am in Toronto with an o2 XDA. I've tried changing bands via bootloader but the thing comes up with no signal. i know there's plenty of signal as I also have an unlocked Motorola v66i which happily works. I am also using a local network GSM simcard (Microcell Fido). The XDA is unlocked... thanks to the geniuses that run this site. does the xda work on 1900 or is it just wishful thinking? I'm back in blighty at the weekend
xdaer
I believe it. But to complete the test, make sure you open and close the SIM cover to completely 'super-reset' the phone part. If found this to be necessary sometimes, also when I switched bands and somehow couldn't get back to 900/1800.
Yes i always make sure I close the tab on the sim slot so the phone resets. I'll try again in a few minutes but I just keeps coming up no signal and doesnt appear to even try to search for a new network
HI all
Having tried the xda a few more times i am at a complete loss. It seems as if it won't even try looking for a signal, just no networks found whatever sim card (O2 UK or a local canadian network sim) is put in. Judging from the number of views and no light shed from anyone else that one must assume the XDA is not triband.
Just one question... is the band switch program mentioned in the all singing update different in design from the one you can do in boot loader?? or is it the same thing just easier to access?
I hate giving up but I guess we will have to start saving up for the XDA II. I certainly hope that it is as hackable its elderly relative.
Being a new member and XDA user I must express my thanks to you lot, the people who make this website so informative, there's so much info here, stuff i never thought you could do with the XDA and it's so satisfying when you can "modify" the settings which are not mentioned in the instruction manual.
Ta and Keep up the good work!

Converting from T-Mobile to AT&T

I have a friend that has a T-Mobile XDA and wants to change to AT&T.
She took it to the local AT&T office and they said they cound convert the phone but they would not be able to give her the capability to brouse the internet.
Can the phone be changed over to AT&T without loosing any of the online capabilities?
Thanks

I've never heard of either carrier being receptive to SIM unlocking, even when they're the "gaining" carrier, so I'm a little suspect of this. That being said, I moved from ATTWS to T-Mobile and had no trouble connecting to GPRS on the T-Mobile side, I suspect it will be the same for you. I would use the tools here to unlock the phone and just keep ATTWS's hands off my device.
Yup, unlock it with the tools here, find the AT&T GPRS settings, and go for it. I'm not sure if loading the AT&T Radio Stack would be good, maybe someone else knows? Mad Max, did you change to the T-Mobile radio?

I have not. Am curious about other's observations. I'm running ATTWS's stack A.20.10 with no problems on T-Mobile, including full GPRS access. Only thing unusual seems to be that my signal meter always reads very low when I'm on T-Mobile, even in places where my other t-mobile phone is almost maxed out on signal strength. Others on the board have mentioned this, so I don't know if it's linked to my cross-carrier configuration or not.
All you have to do is get ahold of T Mobile USA's Customer Care Department and as long as you have had your account with them for at least 3 months and don't have any past due charges on it, they should be able to get you the SID unlock code. Just tell them you're going to be going overseas and one of the GSM carriers over there is giving you a prepaid SIM to use while in their country and they need you to have your Pocket PC Phone Edition unlocked. I had an unlocked one and used it just fine with the T Mobile OEM software in it. The only thing strange I guess is you'll be using ATTWS service with a T Mobile USA device. LOL! I won an SX56 from Siemens so now I'm using it. Bought my T Mobile one for $200 on eBay and resold it for $320. Talk about profit. I hope the IRS aren't reading these forums. LOL! 8)
OK
So if I understand correctly, if I just unlock the SIM and take it into the local AT&T store they should be able to get it set up with both AT&T phone service and Internet, Right?
Thanks for the info

You are correct sir. It will take a couple of minutes to set up the GPRS dial string and settings, but otherwise it will work perfectly.
OK
Thanks for the help. I have already ordered the connector to make a serial cable.
One other thought before I do this...
Is there someone out there that has a Siemens with AT&T they want to trade for a T-Mobile ???
Thanks

It really is the exact same device inside: just burn a new ROM and you'll have the same device. That simple...
no prob
last weekend i went to t-mobile with my att xda and ordered service since att in so cal is beyond horrible. I signed up with a plan which gave me a free phone. He pulled the sim card that came with the phone out of the box and put it in my xda. in 1 minute i receved a sms that said "OTA OK" and my phone worked (with a full signal). I dont use internet but all you have to do is ask for the gprs connection string and type it in.
Apparently the phone was unlocked when they took it to the AT&T store. The tech said they could set up everything but the internet access.
Maybe the techs at that office don't know how to do it.
How do you go about finding out what the GPRS connection string is supposed to be? Is it device specific or location specific? Is it something I can get myself or does AT&T have to provide a unique string?
Is the internet access only offered in certain areas?
Or maybe someone can recommend a "qualified" AT&T office to take it to to get the service set up. I am in the Austin TX area.
I'm kinda new to this so bear with me.
Thanks

I think what they mean is that they don't know how to do it at the store, but you can get the info by calling into ATTWS customer care and asking for data tech support.
Like T-Mobile, the info is NOT device or location specific. Simply set the connection to be "Cellular Line (GPRS)" in the pull-down menu, and the access point name is "proxy". If you're asked specifically for a proxy server name ( I was in version 3, but not in ROM version 4) the ATTWS proxy server is "localhost".
In older ROM versions, there was more to do, but on 4.00.11, that's about all there is to it. If you need the other stuff like IP addresses for proxy servers and WAP gateways, let me know and I can post that two, but doesn't seem to be needed under ROM v4. I have the connection stuff for both ATTWS and Tmobile entered into two connections, because I sometimes flip SIMs between carriers, and it works great.
OK, Great
thanks for the info.
I'll let you know how it turns out.

Making progress but still not quite there
We got the phone working. That was the easy part.
A new AT&T SIM was installed.
We entered the GPRS setup parameters given to us by the AT&T tech.
I was told that when the inverted "G" showed up in the signal strength status window that GPRS would be available. When the G showed up I could connect but IE bombed out saying the page could not be located when attempting to browse.
An AT&T tech told me to do a hard boot. After the hard boot, the G no longer shows up. I can still log on to GPRS but IE still bombs out.
Any suggestions?
The settings provided by AT&T are listed below. Perhaps someone could compare it to their settings ans see if maybe AT&T gave me bad info.
Connection name:
GPRS Connection
Cellular Line (GPRS)
Baud rate = 19200
Use server assigned IP address
Under Modem Tab:
Name GPRS Connection
Number +0 ~GPRS!proxy
Under Proxy Settings:
Both connects to internet and uses proxy server boxes checked
Proxy Server localhost
Advanced Settings:
HTTP localhost : 9090
WAP 10.250.250.250 : 9201
Socks localhost ; 1080
Type = Socks 4
Thanks again for your help.

Since this is not your device I would suggest that you just install the latest official Pocket PC 2002 AT&T ROM and Radio stack which can be downloaded from the below link (she can always later upgrade it to WM2003 if she want to) :
http://www.my-siemens.com/com.apert.../da/us/mw/mc/mc/ruuv1.11_cea.20.17wwe_aws.exe
How to convert:
After you have the above needed file run it!.
Once it has finished 'unpacking files', cancel out of it and use Windows Explorer to go to the
C:\Program Files\SX56 upgrade utility folder.
Now download adaptROM.exe from: http://xda-developers.com/adaptROM/
and place it in the C:\Program Files\SX56 upgrade utility folder
Then go to DOS and run adaptROM.exe from the C:\Program Files\SX56 upgrade utility folder.
After adaptROM has finished return to the C:\Program Files\SX56 upgrade utility folder and run upgrade.exe .
HTH
Thanks
I'll give it a try tomorrow after work.
The saga continues......

Success!
After running adaptrom and installing the Siemens ROM update everything works perfectly.
Thanks for all the help.
These things are pretty cool. Maybe I'll get one for myself.

Can anyone help? - No Signal

Hi folks, can anyone please help me with this problem?
My brother in law has asked me to look at his S740. He has tried several o2 SIM cards (UK) in this phone but always gets told there is no signal.
Not only that, but there is a symbol where the strength meter should be that isn't documented in the user guide.
He has also tried my o2 (3G) sim and a Vodafone sim, both UK.
Any advice gratefully recieved. We have tried several hard resets also.
Thanks
This means it's looking for signal. My guess: Still SIM-locked?
.-ombre-.

Not sure if it's SIM locked as there is a menu to select which carrier to use.
It reads the SIM correctly and sets it all up for o2, but just doesnt get any signal.
Does anyone know where the GSM antenna is on these? Maybe its a bad connection.
UPDATE:
I've had a mail back from HTC that recommends I send it in for repair, lol.
Now do I take it they are robbing buggers or do I take it that the icon is an indicator of a hardware fault??
Hmmmm, dilemma. lol
Are there any more suggestions on what it may be?
Has anyone successfully taken one of these apart?
it may be because of a hardware error...try to connect to a wifi network...if it impossible to find a wifi network then it is due to a harware problem. Most likely because the FR coaxial cable is out of its possision...download the service manual and see how to fix it.

Hi sasiskas, it conects fine to my wireless network at home. I take it from your response that the cable serves a double purpose.
I downloaded the service manual so I could take a look, but only got as far as removing the 4 screws at the back. lol, I couldn't figure out how to get it off, lol
I'm still stuck at the assumption that it is indeed SIM locked, and so will try to find a suitable card to try out.

Thanks. I have tried the same but just keep getting a vender ID, (lol spelling), error.
I would appreciate any input whether you have success or not, it just may spark an idea off.
I cant get in touch with any sales or provider as it was gifted to my bro in law. He's not that bothered about it but would like to have it working if he can.
Thanks folks.
Hey! I think I know the solution to your problem...I had exactly the same problem when I hardReseted my phone.
Go to "Start-settings-Phone-Band Select"
and then select
1.Network type : Auto
2.Band Type : "Euro" if you live in Europe, "US" if you live in USA , or "Japan" if you live in Japan.
Good luck...Let us know if it worked!

Yes that is a good suggestion because the phone will display that icon if it can't find a *usable* network, be it that the SIM doesn't allow it or if the bands don't match the selection on the phone or the bands are not usable by the phone hardware etc.
I would suggest downloading & running HTC Field Test (fieldtest.exe) with & without a SIM installed, with each network & band setting & see if it shows any towers or signal. (Normally you want Auto for both but you may not have that option or you might prefer to set to a KNOWN working band to conserve battery & minimize searching) If should show something even without SIM or with SIM lock because it's supposed to support emergency calls either way. If it shows signals with SIM but you still have same no service icon then it's likely SIM locked (although the phone should alert you to that fact) so odds are the phone hardware, rom or settings do not support whatever signals are available to you. (Btw if field test shows N/A for all the values you need to app unlock your phone)
Hope that helps.
Bill
can you share a link with HTC Field Test?Thnx
Search is your friend.

Hey all I'm having a very similar problem.
Had my HTC for some months now but in the past few days I've found that my network signal is becoming very unpredictable.
I'm also on O2 and I used to have a pretty contstant H (I presume HSDPA) connection.
Howeever im finding now the phone with go from H to 3G to GPRS to E to no signal in the course of 5 mines and round and round again!
Its very annoying as it means I cant make / received calls or texts fluently and even cut me off on a phone call too.
However usually on phone calls it will keep me connected ok till I hang up and then go to no signal.
I've checked the wireless and it is picking up networks..
Any other suggestions? I will try the field test tomorrow...
PS I know its not the network as my work blackberry is O2 and is not having this issue..
Cheers in advance!
Well, just to close my input on this thread.
I tried various ROM's available from this site and none worked.
I did try the band selection settings but still a no go.
I did have limited success but overall, nothing. The phone has now gone back to the person who asked me to look into it and to my knowledge he is going to sell it to one of these phone reclaim companies.
I did check and one place, I think through the post office, is offering £80 ish so not bad I suppose.
Anyway, thank you to all who have made suggestions and wotnot. Personally I'm still happy with an old Nokia 6300 and my Wizard (Mini-S)
Thanks folks.

[Q] Atrix problem "network with limited service found"

Hi,
I have strange problem with Atrix, it's registering to network then it is showing "network with limited service found. do you want to initiate a network search".
Mobile network is connected, I have good reception, I can use Internet access over that network, however cant make/receive.
Stock firmware, no changes.
Any information much appreciated.
Rob
That's odd. I guess T-Mobile is compatible with the atrix in the UK?
If your phone is completely stock, maybe Moto or your carrier could help you with it if nobody on here can. I'm not an expert, but if you just got this phone, then if you wouldn't mind doing a factory reset, that may squash any problem. Another thing that it may be doing if it's a new phone is try to update itself to a newer build? When you go to wireless and networks and look at the list of APNs, what is listed and what is it currently connected to?
Hi
Thank you so much for your replay. Unfortunetely i've done all those.
I think I can do much more than give headaset back to the shop as not working.
Regards,
Rob
Ps. Funny enough I'm sending this from Atrix on 3G connection but still cant make thw call.

Mystery solved, I have bought a "blocked" phone.
I called Orange UK to ask about status of that IMEI (as that was Orange phone), and very nice lady told me that phone is blacklisted with "lost or stolen" description.
So next time when your toy cant login to GSM network but working fine on 3G/GPRS please first check is phone is not blacklisted.
Case closed.

Rob

[Q] loss of signal during 2g/3g usage

Hello everyone. I have a really weird problem going on. Whenever I use the mobile internet (doesn't matter whether it's 2g or 3g) something's happening and no one can reach me via a call or sms.The operator tells that the phone is switched off while actually it isn't. I don't have any indication of signal loss, I can call people while I'm using the mobile data.Sometimes people can call me, but sometimes they can't. I'm using stock gingerbread rom, never changed kernel or anything, just rooted. I'd really appreciate it if anyone could help me because it's my business mobile phone and I can't afford to miss calls.
Thanks in advance and sorry if there already existed a similar thread, I did a little search and didn't find any similar problems.
probably its your service provider fault

If you already contacted your service provider about it, try switching stock rom basebands. Which one are you using? Try switching to KS2. The one I'm using. If that doesn't work, try a different one.
Hey change sim card. . And now mobile portebelity. So ur number not change. . Do it.
