Active car mount for Wizard - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario Accessories

I am wondering if there already is a active carmount (so one that charges the unit and possibly 'extends' the usb port to hook up a wired GPS) available or announce for the Wizard/MDA Vario/K-Jam ....
I don't like the idea to plug a cable in-and-out the unit everytime....
Thanks,
Taco

Yes, go here: http://www.brodit.com/
Not in the US yet, but will be in a few weeks.

Looking forward to this... I wonder if I can just get one with a USB through port so I can use either a charger or a direct USB connection to my CarPC...

Or even 971650 Active Holder, Tilt Swivel
An active holder with a straight cable with open end for fixed installation and a cable with Molex adater system. The cables are to be connected inside the dashboard, this gives a discreet, neat installation without cables hanging over the interior.
You can choose to use the holder as an active holder only for charging, or to connect an adapter to the Molex connector for additional features. Then you can use the holder also for power supply of a GPS reciever, data transer or other own solutions.
12/24 Volt. The product is E-approved. Connect the power cable with a 1,5 A fuse. 2 A charger. Professional installation recommended. The holder is attached onto a tilt swivel and can be adjusted in order to avoid light reflection. Attach onto a ProClip Mounting Platform.

I like the keyboard extended, so that's why I want the other one. I've already got a laptop stand to mount it on, so it'll work out well for me.
I also plan on getting a Parrot as a friend just got one and he's my guinea pig. :O)
Thanks.

Sorry for the off topic:
Is you're friend using the Parrot with a Wizard? Which Parrot is he using? Please report back how well it works I have been also thinking of getting tehe 3500 Color LCD car kit.
Thank you

I think he's got the 3000 or 3100? I'll have to ask and make sure. Believe me, as soon as he reports to me, I'll post on it. Yes, he's got a KJAM/Wizard.

brodit.se

The Brodit range (including the new 'open' XDA mount) is here in the UK.
They'll also ship to the US.
http://www.dsldevelopments.com
They are very helpful, and do a screen mount for those who prefer it to the Dash mount which is car specific.
http://www.dsldevelopments.com/suctionmount.html.
See this post too:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=38678

I've fitted a Brodit active vertical mount & routed the cigarette lighter inside the dashboard to a 4 way that I've mounted in the glovebox. My Holux BT receiver is permanently plugged into its cigarette lighter which comes on when the ignition is turned on. The battery is removed. So if I want to go walking etc, I just unplug the receiver, put in the battery & off I go. The only challenge is the battery life of the vario - 4ish hours max with screen on all the time & BT on as well.
Tom Tom running on my Vario will only run in portrait, which is fine for me, which is why I chose the vertical mount.
The Vario/Mini S/9100 will not work with wired GPS receivers according to Holux UK tech support.

dont you find the brodit charger leads to be too short?
mine doesnt actually reach the socket unless i stretch it... not sure how you managed to get it into your glovebox
i'm getting my tomtom, brodit 9100 and snooper wired directly to battery next week so i guess i wont have to worry about it soon

The Brodit leads aren't very long, but I managed to get it to reach going through the central part of the dashboard under the radio/computer combo on my BMW. It is stretched a litttle, but I don't see it, it looks neat and it works great.
I've just discovered Tom Tom will run in landscape mode, but having used my Palm T3 in both portrait & landscape, I prefer portrait on the Vario as the bottom info doesn't take too much of the screen in portrait, but does in landscape.

I bought the horizontal Brodit Passive holder. Was not impressed. THe phone didnt fit well and the plastic was cheap and it actually snapped when I first put the phone in.
The Vertical one is great. Its made of thicker plastic and holds the phone. Even on the bouncy back roads I take it work.

I received my brodit car mount today and install it. I love my tomotom nav in landscape mode. because of the horizontal brodit won't let me closed the keyboard. I decided to buy the vertical one and turn it 90 degree counter-clockwise for landscape. Will take some pic and post it next week. 8)

Is there enough space in the Brodit active vertical mount to accomodate a thin (soft) velcro strip on the back of my K-Jam/Vario? Would this mess up the alignment with the mini-usb power connector?
Thanks!

Hi,
have you got a picture of the back of your device with the velcro on? Ill have a look and measure up a stock item: 968650 Holder to see if it would be ok (I suspect it might be if its not too thick, and like you say it is soft)
Cheers,
Bryson

Malata gTab Dock teardown photos

I have seen a few threads around here where people are were asking about some good quality photos of the inside of the Malata Zpad dock that works for our gTablets.
Well, I had a dock that I thought was DOA, after taking it apart it turns out the weight had just come loose and pulled out the ribbon cable. Simple fix as it turns out.
While I had it apart I figured I would snap a few shots. Sorry I couldn't get too close up, I don't have a Macro lens.

Thanks for the pics Pyro! Hey, if you need Macro you can pick up Macro Filters pretty cheap, they aren't as good as a true Macro Lens of course, but they do pretty darn good.

I just got a new one as well. It's much smaller than I thought it would be, only about 5" across.
Great Picks very much appreciated!!!
I had a member PM me about taking the dock apart and do the repair on the ribbon cable. I wanted to post the info here so everyone can read it.
Take a look at this picture
See the 5 brass threaded inserts around the edge of the case? If you peel back the rubber pad at the bottom of the dock, there are 5 small screws at those locations.
I was lucky enough to have one of these on hand, purchased from focal price.
http://www.focalprice.com/detail_IPC04X.html
I used the long pry tool to pull back the rubber pad and remove the screws.
You can also see in this picture to the left and right of the tablet connector, where the ribbon cable starts, are two grey circles. This is where the mounts SHOULD be for the weight that is inside the dock. Malata for some reason only used these two small anchor points to mount the weight, so its pretty easy for them to break off.
I was able to take the plastic pieces where the weight screws in, glue them back in place by holding them with the tweezers included in the repair kit.
Once the weight is fixed you need to pull the grey bar out in front of the ribbon cable slot using the pry tool again. Slip the ribbon cable into the slot and push the grey back back up into place, this should secure the ribbon cable.
At this point you should be able to button the dock back up and have a working dock.
hey folks,
looking at the last set of pics, it looks like the ethernet chip has its own MAC. Just a long shot, but maybe network settings are preventing the dock from accessing the network. For example, I have MAC filtering enabled, and if I don't specifically add the MAC, my lights wont light up.
I am looking to get a dock, so i am doing a bit of research...
Is the MAC address found on the box or someplace in plain sight? I dont want to take the thing apart to get to the MAC.......(I will).

No, the only place I saw it was on the sticker once I opened the unit. You might talk to the devs here and see if one of the custom ROMS has a place to find it in the software.
I had no problem with my dock working if I booted the tablet once it was on the dock. Any standard router should be able to pick up the mac address of the dock.
Looks like next to the power socket, you might be able to solder on a 3.5mm jack...

Car Dock Arm Change?

Does anyone know if there is a compatible 'arm' that will work with the Car Dock? The one from Moto is too long and lowers the phone too much for where I want the phone to go. Looks like anything with the right size ball-socket joint would work, I just need need to find mounts that use that style. I'm tempted to just take a Dremel and epoxy to the arm included with the dock, but I'd like to have a spare before I did that.
Curious if you found anything?
I was able to use the arm from my father-in-law's old droid mount, but I have no idea where you would order such a thing.
Any Garmin Nuvi mount should work with the car dock.
I use my dock with a cheapo "i.Trek Garmin Nuvi Sticky Mount" and it works perfectly.
Where are you guys putting your docks that you need to change the arm?

I actually have mine mounted from one of the cup holders, just below the center console. I used a couple of hockey pucks, duct taped together, with the suction cup mounted to the top. It wedges perfectly in the cup holder, and holds the phone perfectly below the center console, right in front of the gear shift. The weight of the hockey pucks holds it pretty securely.
I also have a mount for my bike that I got from my father-in-law. It's the exact same size as the ball-mount thing on the car dock.

The cup holders are the perfect size for a hockey puck to be wedged into. I taped four of them together to make a pedestal to attach the car dock.

Titan Car Mount

ProclipUSA (my favorite car mount) now has holders for the HTC Titan.
They list both the HTC Titan and the HTC Titan (AT&T) even though it is the same part number.
I have used their products for all my phones all the way back to the Cingular 8125 and they are the best I have ever found.

UK have cheap mount kits
I just purchased a complete car kit from phones 4 u in the UK £9.99 it included 12v car phone charger, windscreen holder, 3.5mm phono cable all work and fitted well
I did not buy this specific one, but something like it. The width is adjustable and worked perfect for the Titan.
I would verify with the seller before buying as I do not see the one I bought listed any longer.

It's freaken awesome. It comes with 2 extenders that you have to put on for the titan. To release, you just push downward with the phone. Your charger doesn't get wrapped up in this one either.
I’ve been very interested in this kit (ProClip). Can you tell me if, once the phone is secured in the holder, is the phone easily rotated while still keeping the tilt adjustment tight? I guess I am asking if the tilt and rotate are adjusted independently? Given that MS has yet to implement the landscape views of many of the media interfaces, I find myself having to frequently having to rotate between landscape and portrait.
how are you dealing with audio cabling?
TIA, T.J.

My Titan mount is arriving today. All the ProClip holders I have used were great for tilt and rotate. I even had one for my Tilt2 where you could go landscape and open the keyboard.
It is a superior product in every way. Also, it is very secure in the car and the locations are great for driving and looking at the screen at the same time.

Can you still use the headphone jack? I just got my Titan and I like to play music through my stereo in my truck.

Yes, the headphone jack is still accessible while in the holder.
It does not use a suction cup mount.....the mount attaches to the vehicle dash board, but the installation does not require drilling or anything like that. It is not permanent and can be removed from the vehicle.
The important thing to remember is when using a ProClip system, the vehicle mount is specific to your vehicle and the holder is specific to your phone. However, I have not found a strong, better mount if you use your phone in the car frequently.
You can rotate and tilt the holder as you see fit. In the last picture you can see how it attaches and I have it tilted far forward.

Car Panel is something HTC offers on their Android phones.
For WP, I'm wondering if "Car Panel" is the same as "Dock Mode".

I'm pretty sure those instructions are for an HTC Android phone.

I have just bought this car kit too and there is no auto launch of car panel too. It is written in the manual that NaviPanel automatically opens when your phone is docked on the cradle of the car holder. But, it seems that NaviPanel is for android phone's only.

Ordered this mount for my wife's car, I use a ProClip unit in my car, seems to work pretty well for what it is. Mountek has them available on Amazon every weekday at 07:00 PST, I ordered mine at 08:15 PST and there were only eight left. I paid $23.90 shipped (USPS first class). I am hoping that it will fit my HTC (with extended battery) as well as my wife's OG Droid. I am not too worried about blocking any radio controls while in use because they are all mirrored on the steering wheel. She was pretty adamant about having something that was removable, and I can't stand the windshield mounts that are available.
(Here is the video from their site)
Here is the box from USPS, shipped received about a week after ordering. Included was the mount, a piece of adhesive foam, and small instruction sheet.
The mount seems to be built fairly well
This tabbed area inserts into the compact disc slot, then the knob is twisted to expand until "firm" The tabs are soft, so no marring the CD slot.
Here is the adhesive pad. DON"T USE IT WITH THE EXTENDED BATTERY The bottom rest is removable to work with a variety of electronics.
Here is my OG Droid mounted, and then the Vigor with the standard battery.
Here is the side profile with the standard battery cover. As a refresher here is the difference between the standard and extended battery covers...
Here is the mount without the bottom plate, holding the Vigor with the extended battery cover.
Here is me shaking it, with the extended battery, no problems with is falling out. Here is a top down view of the foam sides holding the Vigor.
I don't have my wife's car right now, but here is the mount in my Civic (06-11)...
To those unfamiliar, the Civic had a cd slot that is at a angle, here is with the mount installed.
Now with the Vigor installed (with extended battery) portrait and landscape.
Overall I think it is going to work well. I will update this review if I have any issues...
***Update 02-24-2011***
Works well in my wife's Subaru, does not block any of the display. No issues with the Vigor (Rezound) falling out with the extended battery, the foam on the sides works well to keep it in place.
My wife uses one in her car for her Razr. Seems to work well, and she likes it.
But, I tried it with my Rezound and there are a couple problems. With the extended battery, it's almost too thick for the mount. It will hold it, but it's not quite deep enough to hold securely. Seems like the phone would easily pop out if you bump it or even from road vibration. The second problem is that the usb port is blocked so no charging. You might be able to trim the side piece enough to get the charger to plug in, but I haven't tried.
Awesome. Just a thanks for the post. Glad to see a car mount not relying on suction, which my "textured" dash and crap make useless, and i don't want my view blocked at all in my windshield. This is the most useful car mount for me i've seen yet. too bad it'll most likely block me from keeping my Archos 5 IMT from mounting via velcro where i do lol but rarely do i use that awesome beast anymore. Can't wait to get a chance to order one.

Updated with Photos and brief overview.
Sorry I never had a chance to get any photos up for you, but yours are great. I didn't realize the bottom plate was removable. That solves the issue of plugging the charger in. And glad to see it holds your phone securely. I think I had a case on mine when I tried it, so maybe that made some difference.
After seeing your review, I think I'll give this mount another try.

Thanks, came in quicker than I expected.
That's crazy. I have a civic si and wanted to see how it looked and since you ha even one it looks like it works well. I wanted to place it above the big capartment infringement of the shifter. I may get this!
I actually use a ProClip mount for my car, it mounts above the driver right side vent, but it is much more permanent. You on the 8th?

I'm on here and there, Chris/Si/4dr. Nice FG, hate black... Never again. Does look good the first 20 min after a wax though.
That's genius. Finally no longer have to deal with suction cups
It's just a dock to hold the phone in place correct? Doesn't broadcast sound through your car's audio system? Thanks.

Yes it is "just" a dock... I use a dock for navigation, music, & calls. This lets your phone be within reach, not stuck to your windshield, and out of the sun.
This is what I use to "stream" music ect...
Updated photographs
I received mine last week, and have been using it for a few days now. I really like it. My CDs still play...yeah I would have to remove it to change the CD, but my car has an in dash 6-CD changer, so I already have them pre-loaded and just switch on the fly.
I'd buy this again...in fact I might buy one for the wife's car.

Glad my little review was able to help, I haven't played a CD in almost two years.
I got this for my wife's Jeep Liberty and it works like a champ!
I used this with my Evo 4G with extended bat. and now my Rezound. I works pretty good but I can't angle it enough so that the phone is facing me directly. Also, it fits fine in my wife's Mazda with 6 disk changer but in my F150 with 6 disk changer it it really tight - even scraped off some of the protective covering of the little tabs that fit into the cd slot. I don't use the changer so I just forced it in and it's not going anywhere, didn't even have to tighten the adjustment screw.
Did you remove the back pad? Mine came with it already on. Tempted to just scrape it off.

Proclip universal car mount

I've had a Proclip mount system for 8 years now, in 2 cars and with 5 phones now. The universal mount I'd had lasted through an iPhone 3GS, a Galaxy S2, a Nexus 4 and the Nexus 5. Unfortunately it couldn't accommodate the N6, so I purchased on of their larger ones which arrived today. It's pictured here with a naked N6, but will also work with the Spigen case I should be receiving Monday.
This is the one I bought --> http://goo.gl/tA2buI

Thanks for the heads up. I was just thinking about this. I have the smaller universal mount, and it does fit with my Spigen Neo Hybrid, but JUST barely! I plan on getting a beefier case, so I need to get a bigger universal mount.
Thanks!

Wow, I just measured. The Nexus 6 with a Spigen Neo Hybrid is nearly 3.5" wide. The Large Universal mount accomodates up to 3.5" wide. No love for a bigger case on the N6

Be sure to check out some of their other large(r) universal mounts. They have some that'll accommodate larger cases.
Thanks for the heads up. I am in the same boat as you were in. Love the proclip and its worked on the last 3 phones I have had but N6 is just to wide for it.
I read on another thread that they are releasing a N6 specific model but would much rather just get this instead of waiting 2-3 months for it to come out.
Never had an proclip, could somebody explain how they work? I see on their site they have custom dash mounts for specific cars but can't figure out how the phone mount fits to the dash mount. Also, can it be easily taken out with 1 hand once all set up?
The phone mount screws into the car mount. I have also used their mounts for years but always the phone specific model that's hard wired. I like that it just pop out in and it charges no cord to plug in before I put it in the holder.
So it's is a 1 handed operation? I like the ram X mount but needing to use 2 hands is a drawback.
I have a universal phone mount attached to a car mount that attaches to the a-pillar of my driver's side. its easy one-handed to pop my phone in or out. Here are stock pictures of what I use:
I bought the proclip for my Garmin a few years back. It is awesome. Might have to look at one for my N6.

Its basically 2 parts. The car specific mount and then the phone mount. If you switch phones you can just get a new phone mount witch screws to your already in place car mount.
They are a bit more expensive but are rock solid and the mounts are custom designed for each car model.
If you switch holders from car to car like I do, their locking move clip system is awesome http://www.proclipusa.com/accessories/locking-move-clips/locking-move-clip-accessories.aspx
I had the same problem - long time ProClip user whose universal mount used for the Nexus 5 wasn't big enough to hold the new Nexus 6. I just took the holster apart, removed the swivel component that limits how wide the holster arms can expand, stuck it back with super glue, filed the edges and put it all back together. It works
They are running a sale right now too. Trying to decide if I should get the universal one or the Note 4 holder. N6 holder doesn't sound like it will be out for at least another month.

Ends Monday.
So with the universal mounts you don't get forward/backward movement of the phone? Do the sides squeeze enough to hold it in place or something even though the phone may be thinner than the slot in the mount?

There is a little bit of movement (all of my phones have had some in their universal mounts), but it's still held firmly and doesn't move on it's own. With my Spigen Perfect-fit case it's actually a great fit.
I've always used the device specific ones that have an integrated charging cable. What do you folks do to handle charging in the car?

I'll bet this combination would work: a large universal thick holder with an anker ultra-slim wireless charging pad glued to it.

Can you tell me if there is 0.2 inches of space behind the phone in which to glue a wireless charger?

I don't have the phone, the mount, or the charger, so, no.
But according to the specs of all three, there is enough room. However, there may be a problem with the diameter of the charger. It may be slightly too large for the prongs of the mount to close all the way. That could probably be fixed by putting a little padding on the prongs, though.
