Has anyone had any success fixing the hardware on these units? As I have mentioned elsewhere on these boards, I dropped mine and now two things have happened: Firstly having successfully upgraded the ROM/firmware to XDA, the touch screen has stopped working almost completely. Occasionally it does respond to the touch, and the bits which respond are uniform but aren't the bits where you have touched!
Secondly some vertical lines have started to appear to the extreme right 2-3mm of the screen, indicating that there is some type of chip at the edge of the screen??? (someone suggested the digitiser but when I tried to ask a question about this, no one seemed to know what or where a digitiser was) In addition, when I press on the casing at where the lines emanate, the lines get worse.
I took the back off and found that it does seem very difficult indeed to get at the screen to replace it. Secondly, there are some difficult-to-identify bits floating around inside it (they may be just retaining pieces for the lower left hand case screw which is missing)
As there has suddenly appeared a job lot of 100 of these (obsolete?) screens floating around New York I was wondering whether it was in practice possible to replace one or is the amount of work involved cost-prohibitive?
It would be kinda nice to get this unit operational again (especially now that I have successfully loaded your ROM and unlocked it) if this could be done at not too great a cost.
The digitiser is also known as the glasstop and it's the pressure sensitive cover over the top of the LCD - it is a seperate unit although attached firmly to the LCD it can be replaced.
Try www.ppctechs.com for a price? It's farly easy to remove the screen if you want to do it yourself - I've seen a few guides on the internet.

They seem to be originating in China though I had a disastrous time getting hold of some. I got two. not sure if they are the sony originals but will try to install and report back if I can figure out how to get one in.
Where did you see the instructions on taking this thing apart?

My battery has gone to hell. After getting it down to 5% one day, it just would not hold a charge long. Then I got it down to 10% a week later, and it really got bad. Life is about 1/3 what it used to be. I also have some dust and even small hairs or flecks in the screen.
So...I ordered a new advance replacement unit from T-Mobile, and it just arrived. Simple enough? Well, I have the memory upgrade in mine, so I need to do some component swapping. What's the best way to go about this? What parts can be disconnected easily (or more importantly, reconnected)? Where is the damn battery (didn't see it in the disassembly photos on the site)?

Please specify 'component swapping' in more detail... Are you actually thinking about swapping the memory upgrade??? You do know that that would mean desoldering the 2 big memory chips on both boards, cleaning them and the boards, and soldering them back... How good are you at smd soldering??? There are commercial services doing the upgrade (32 -> 64 mb), if I were you I'd contact one of those.
Other than that, we're currently swapping lcd screens, touchpanels, mainboards from 3 broken units to create 2 working units and 1 very broken one. So, what do you need to know exactly?
BTW, the battery is stuck on the inside of the back cover.

No, no, I can solder normal stuff, but not that. I mean, I assume what I need to do is keep my own motherboard. I'd like the screen, case, and battery from the new unit. On the radio section, I suppose it doesn't matter either way. So I incorrectly said "component" when what I really meant was "board," and desired advice on doing that.

Ok, so you want to use the screen/touchpanel/backlight assembly from the new one (smart move, not taking that apart; besides the fact that it's glued together and you need to separate it on the correct separation, that also leaves the risk of forgetting the correct orientation of the glass panel with little dots on it, used to distribute the backlight evently onto the lcd; and, there are slightly different assemblies out there which need slightly different panels...). You should keep all boards from the old unit (old mainboard including old radio unit, use the new screen/touchpanel/backlight assemly, and the new case (which includes the new battery).
You could consider swapping IMEI numbers on the units... Although _shops_ never register the numbers when they give out units, service departments might. You know where to find the tool to do that...
The screwing around of the parts should not take more than half an hour if it's the first time you take apart this unit (but have taken apart small electronics before) and less if you've done it before.
Beware of the really thin clear plastic rings used under the screws to screw down the display...
We won't be publishing a very detailed 'how to swap your screen' instruction any time soon but do have some raw unedited pictures of the operation. I'll see if we can get them online any time soon.

I ended up doing the change and ran into a snag--the plastic pin that sticks out of the top power button was loose or broken (probably happened in one of the many drops the unit has experienced). When I opened the case, I lost that. Had to send it to PPC Techs to have them solder in a new power switch.
Other than that, disassembly is pretty easy and straightforward. You mentioned you won't publish a how-to...is that because of not wanting to have it on the site, or that nobody wants to write one? If the latter, I'd be happy to write it up and include my detailed pics.
If you want to make a detailed howto on how to open and close the unit, and how to exchange certain parts, we will gladly put it on!
Do make sure to stress that people need a certain level of experience or be willing to risk losing the device though...

I have an ATT tilt 2, running an Energy rom. It worked great till 3 days ago, when I noticed a "light" spot on the screen (about 50mm in diameter) , like something had scratched some film away.
I disregarded it as just that, a scratch, but the next day the screen was completely unresponsive. If I press on the spot, it "fills" with a darker color, I am guessing this is the digitizer pressing into the LCD screen, the screen then becomes responsive for a few seconds (Just long enough for me to reset my alarms!), but not always.
I have ready through these forums and online, and it sounds like I damaged something, digitizer or LCD, but I am not sure which I need to replace.
Also, I have read that replacing just one or the other can be problematic as they need to be aligned just so and with no particles in between, but I cannot find any Digitizer+LCD assemblies online for Tilt2...
So I guess what I am looking for is:

If it's under warranty, do an exchange. That would be the easiest/cheapest option. HTC provides a 15 month warranty normally. Going through your carrier would be a better option, however, as they usually just swap out the headset. If you have no warranty, then just search eBay or Google for the digitizer and LCD. They normally come together. Based on your description of the problem, you'll need both anyhow. Some come with instructions, and some don't. YouTube has a few videos detailing the replacement, though.
I have had a very similar problem on two Tilt 2s now. Looks like the glue leaks out of the side of the plastic over the lcd. Both phones did this on the right side of the screen.
Just in case anyone turns this up in a search like I did and can't swap the phone thru their carrier....
Global Parts Direct sells the ATT versions of these, though the LCD was out of stock at the time of this posting. (I'm too much a newb to post a direct link.)
I just had the same thing happen to me and I was able to swap the phone out with AT&T.
Oddly enough, the bubble wasn't there when I called AT&T but showed up the next day. My screen was unresponsive, called, went through a ton of questions but I had gone through this before with a couple of Fuze phones.
One thing I noticed before this happened which appears to be symptomatic before the phone becomes unresponsive is a large rectangle appears on the phone's LCD. It doesn't obstruct the viewing or anything I have just noticed that it has been on all my phones that have had trouble with the LCD/digitizer.
Has anyone else noticed this?

I'm a short time lurker, and flasher, but that's besides the point. I've started my own business repairing phones and I've gotten very good at it, I have extremely fair prices, and this is putting me through college.
I've ran into an issue and I can't figure it out. I try to stay up to date on phones since my job requires that I work on phones, and although I couldn't find all the information about the hardware under the screen of the SGS4 i decided to replace a broken glass screen any way..... well now I have a dissatisfied customer on my hands and i'm doing everything in my power to rectify the situation.
What I did:
I used a heat gun to lightly heat the screen of my customers broken phone, like I have done many times before with other models of phones. I scraped off the old glass, cleaned the glue out thoroughly with alcohol and a small piece of microfiber (like for cleaning screens and glasses). I laid down 3m tape (possibly in the wrong place). Put the new glass on, and PRESTO done.......
The result:
A beautiful new screen, but the wake up motion doesn't work any more (where you swipe your hand across the screen w/o actually touching it), and the screen automatically blacks out once a call is placed. This may be because of where i placed the tape, but a new issue has reared it's ugly head...... It's typing now... by itself.... during calls and at other times. She wanted a different color for the screen and i told her that I will replace the screen and fix the issues all in one motion, but I'm not sure what is making it type on its own. Does anyone have any clue as to what could be causing this issue? I have until the afternoon of 9/25 Central time (UTC-06:00)

My wife, deep in the midst of pregnancy-brain, washed her beloved Fireball a couple weeks ago. Long story short, she tried to power it up too soon, and now the LCD backlight is dead.
Everything else seems to function fine, so I decided to see if there was something obvious that could be fixed. Sure enough, at one of the connections between screen and mainboard, there looked to be some small electrical POOF type scarring. One of the traces on the ribbon cable is missing a chunk of conductive material right next to the connection, so it would seem replacing the whole assembly (digitizer/LCD) should restore function. Except - right next to that spot on the mainboard is what looks like it might be a diode that might have seen better days. I'm not sure, and I haven't been able to find any closeups of the inside of the phone to verify what it's supposed to look like.
So what I'm wondering is if anyone here can take a peek at these pics, note the potential damaged area, and tell me if that little bit of badness means I have to toss the phone.

Just a quick question. Anyone else have an issue with their screen cracking? My P9000 has developed a crack over the led. I didn't drop, knock or bump the phone. I've emailed support for advice. I'll keep this forum posted.
Update got a very prompt response. Two sentences

we are sorry to hear that, but screen will not crack by itself. it may have some physical damage on it."
No details of how to get a repair, that's it! Not the best customer service. I've replied enquiring about service centres, costs etc. and will update the post when I get more info. There are a few posts asking for similar details re. Screen replacement so the info will be useful for the community.
actually it's strange to think that a screen can brake by itself , can you post some pictures?
elephone customer care have already proved it's lower quality service . i don't know where you live but best solution imho is to give the phone to a local cinese phone repair shoop , here in my city there are a couple that repair - fix phones for low money and they also provide spareparts that arrive very quick and at low price thanks to it's black market channel, try to search one
I agree it's very unusual that the screen would break in this way, but I'm really very careful with all my devices and this has never happened before.
If Elephone say that this cannot happen then I'm not going to quibble, I'm more interested in repairing the phone. Sending it back to the seller for repair will be an interesting, long and probably prohibitively expensive process, but I'll make enquiries.
In other news Elephone are still working on a new ROM for the device, I took the opportunity to ask supplementary questions in my email :laugh: so the chatter on the forums about the 19/04 build being the last one can abate for a while.

Your phones has physical damage along the bottom side of the metal frame can clearly see where its been scraped. You sure it didn't drop or get dragged along something while face down? Hopefully there's an OEM replacement as its just the glass that seems to be damaged not the LCD

I had a similar small crack appear on mine which had not been dropped I assumed it had been knocked whilst in my pocket, But then today i put my phone in my pocket to drive and collect the kids when i got to the school i had 3 additional cracks I assume its something to do with the size of the screen and it not flexing.
The new cracks now make it pretty tough to use the phone as they are affecting the touch functions, once i can unlock it i will take some photos to post.

Thank you. I'd almost convinced myself that I must have knocked the phone.
Events have taken a new turn. The left hand side of the screen now creaks and pops when you press on it. If I press sufficiently hard enough it stops creaking and popping, almost as if it is correctly seated again only to literally and audibly pop out again 5 minutes later.
I will post a video later, and will be contacting elephone with evidence that there is a design flaw with the device. I'll keep this forum updated on my progress.
thats weird thats where my spontaneous crack started images attached, the bottom one is under the glass but i think was the cause of the left side one.
Adding images as attachments as well given the URLS don't seam to be showing correctly.
Mine also has a minor crack on the screen, it's in a case and has not been dropped. There is no damage to the frame at all, I'm guessing it's from being in my pocket. The phone obviously isn't as strong as mainstream manufacturers. My crack is very faint in the top right corner and you really have to look at it in a certain light to see it.
If it gets worse, I'll buy a new phone (One Plus 3) and not look at this device again

Mine broke in my front pocket without impact. It was the aluminium frame that was bending and must have cracked under the stress. In hindsight I should have started putting the phone in my pocket the other way around. Ha ha!

I note the replacement screens have come down in price I may have to have a go at a repair.
