How many pins for the Wizard USB port? - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario Accessories

Anyone know if the the HTC Wizard needs the 4-pin or the 5-pin USB Mini-B cable for syncing & charging from a PC?

I'm using my SONY camera's USB cable, and it has 5 pins visible inside. Dunno if it's using all 5, but there you go

Thank you very much. That's what I needed to know before I went out and bought some cables.

Yeah, it got 5 pins inside, for sure!
I have my original cable attached to my computer at work where I am right now, so it was easy to check

You can get a retractable USB-A to USB Mini 5-pin (the cable the Wizard needs) here:
http://www.pcmall.com/pcmall/shop/detail~dpno~141388.asp
http://www.boxwave.com/products/com...-a-to-mini-usb-5-pin-hi-speed-usb-2-0_579.htm
I had one for my Treo and I still have all the attachments (wall plug and cigarette plug) so they will fit right into that.
I am not sure if the phone can take advantage of USB 2 so the second link might not be worth the money.

I think its possible to use the same carcharger from the HTCTyTN (Hermes) and HTCTyTNII for the HTC Touch HD. I read somewhere its possible. Somebody any experience with that!

Should, my car charger for my Tilt works fine with the Fuze. It's the same connector. I do believe all HTC products have the same connector.

Actually, its just a simple mini usb connector. My Mitac Mio A701 has the same. I am using the same car charger for Mio A701 and HTC touch HD. I use a Kensington USB charger, for 6.99 euros its yours. Then use any normal usb to mini usb cable...

Unfortunately, it's NOT a standard mini usb connector. HTC has a different connector that very much looks like but isn't mini usb. You can't use a mini usb cable with HTC devices.
Here's a picture of HTC connector: http://www.tracyandmatt.co.uk/blogs/index.php/2006/09/10/htc_hermes_usb_connector_pin_config , as opposed to the mini usb connector (http://www.accesscomms.com.au/reference/usb.htm)
What's true, though, is that all newer HTC devices use the same connector, so you are able to use the cable from any other HTC device you might have.

You are wrong. With the Touch HD comes an ordinary Mini USB cable.
Charging is done by the pins for normal USB. The ExtUSB additional pins are for a headset only.

I tried the same carcharger on my Touch that I used for my HTCTyTn, it works during navigation and it works good. But at the same time the battery needed a recharge to. The only thing that regonized was that the device was warmingup, but not extremly.
In the past, sometimes, but not always the TyTn get the same warmingup. But never had an real problem with that.
Is that a normal behavior

Hi all,
I ordered an original HTC car charger. Because it had an mini usb which looks differently, I called HTC.
They assured me that this charger was ment for the HTC touch HD and could be used without a problem.
The car charger comes with an mini usb plug.

Look at those pictures ... this link

But standard USB socket (even on official car charger listed on expansys site) is bevelled on BOTH ends

How you guys charge your HD with "standard" USB ? Do you just force standard USB plug into extUSB socket on HD ?

The HD plug is compatible with mini USB. Yes, on the HD it is flat on one side. Don't worry. You can use a regular mini USB charger. There is no forcing there, just look at the pictures...the connection showed there can take "more" than just mini USB, not less. A normal mini USB is bevelled at both sides. on HD it is bevelled on only one side, meaning you can fit there a "bigger" plug (read extmini USB), not a "smaller" plug
Oh, maybe I forgot to mention. I have a HD, and for the last time, you can use all your mini usb connectors on the HD (I use 4 different ones, at work, in car, at home for charging and at home for sync). They all fit, it is compatible...no forcing!!! End of thread....please....?
I made a video for those who do not believe that a miniUSB can plug into extUSB socket -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n05lUtReubU
I use a genuine htc charger which charges quicker than a generic one from the lighter socket. I believe this is because generic charger is at the standard usb 500mah where as the genuine charges at 1000mah and therefore a quicker charge. Note your power supply (the one which plugs into the wall) supplies 1000mah.
By the way, I've used various cables with my phone and although the connectors always fit no problem, that doesn't mean they actually have worked!
For example, I've tried a power supply for an older Orange SPV and was surprised when it refused to charge my TyTnII!?
I've also had other issues with usb connection to my PC where it will charge from the usb port but will not connect to Windows until I change the cable. The cable that didn't work, works perfectly well with other mini usb devices. This was actually from a Belkin 16-in-1 card reader thing... never had much faith in belkin!!

can you take a picture of your mini USB (assuming you have HD)?
My HTC HD has the special connetor. the regular mini USB does not fit into the HD jack.
The only option I see is to get a generic lighter plug with standard usb jack and connect the proprietary cable and stick it in the plug.
But you still beed another cable (one at home and one in your car)
I had the KJAM and it has a standard mini usb - It does not fit in the HD.

I think it would be better if you show us a picture of your mini usb plug, the one that does not fit. That makes more sense than us showing a "regular" mini-usb plug that fits in the htc extusb, which is backwards compatible with mini-usb.

replaceent usb cable

Is the USB cable for the TP2 custom? It does not seem to match any of the other mini usb cables I have and none of the others will fit in my TP2. The cable is starting to come loose at the head (seeing silver fibers coming out). I may need another one soon, any idea where to get them for a decent price?
I use the mini-USB cable from either of my digital cameras or from my old Palm Tungsten E PDA. Works fine.
Yeah, the standard shaped mini usb's will fit. Even though they look different and dont have that strange angle like the stock one that comes with the phone.
I use this one from an 8125 at home and the stock one at work. Both work fine.
Some work, some don't
For some reason about 1/2 of my mini cables do NOT work with the TP2, but I have a couple that do. I'm not sure what the difference is. The TP2 is supposed to work with a standard mini usb cable.
you can find the OEM chargers (the wall plug with the USB cable) on ebay for about 7 dollars
i prefer to use the HTC-shaped plugs since i had some issues with regular mini-B cables being loose and damaging the data port on my Mogul

difference is in little misshape of the mini usb side of the cable, because connectors on phones get easily corroded. little different on pressure on the cable side or micro small difference in shape could make it work or not.
usb-hub used and patented by htc have on female side a small plate with 5pins on one side and 6 on the other, if you plug htc-hub connector you can use all of them, if you plug STANDARD mini usb, it will only connect with 5pin side.
this have the same charecteristic as standard mini usb, it's 2 pins for 5v power, and 2pins for data-, data+. the last 5th one is not used. every usb mini to usb normal cable have to be compliant with standards, which means, there can't be any differences. the other side of usb-hub is for audio video only and doesn't have nothing to do with data connection.
usb cable doesn't need very special shielding, or twisting. no need to waste money on gold inside. any standard usb cable would do. e.g. $1 from ebay. just get two, three different ones and see which works best with your pda.
cool, I just found one on ebay for $2.50. There was plenty there. I tried some of my other muni usb and they didn't work for me.

OEM USB Cable

The Rezound has a very interesting Micro-USB port that seems to have the outer shape similar to Mini-USB, but with the Micro-USB guts. The cable that comes with the phone has a rectangular plug that seems a bit longer and fits perfectly into the phone's jack. In fact, its amazing... to get the phone connected to it, you have to push the connector in until it 'clicks' into place - very solid.
My wife's DINC suffers from a slutted-out socket that now barely works anymore due to the standard Micro-USB design that seems pretty fragile. Even though a standard Micro-USB fits into the Rezound's unique socket, it doesn't have the solid feel that the OEM version has.
Does anyone know what this newer style connector is called? I would like to find a couple more cables that are longer and feel that by using this type of connector, the Rezound's port should last the life of the phone.
Thanks in advance!!!

Thanks dude...
A normal microUSB cable will still get the job done. It's just put in the reverse as it is on the Incredible. The tabs need to be facing up. I got 3 OEM HTC microUSB cables off ebay for like $7 bucks shipped. And the odd shaped end is probably some proprietary HTC connector, same as they had with the HeroCDMA with the miniUSB.

No, it's a micro-A USB receptacle that supports MHL. There's a difference.
I would rather have the MHL cable... Feels more secure when plugged in..
Has anyone been able to find one on the internet or in store?
Sent from my ADR6425LVW
yeah the security of the MHL cable is worth not using a standard micro USB. for instance when you're using a car charger w/ a standard micro USB, the cable can tug a bit on the connector(depending on length of cable, placement of phone) and cause it to come loose & stop charging... but with the micro A USB(MHL) it's nice & secure and you don't have to worry about that happening.
Anybody have a part number for the OEM cable or best case know where to order it
The really annoying thing about the cable that comes with the phone is that you can't use it with any other micro-A/B USB ports. They seem to have intentionally shipped a cable that you can only use with this device, even though the device itself will take any micro USB plug. Thanks, HTC!

I did say that any other micro USB cable would work on the phone. I have a charger from every blackberry I ever owned, the Inc charger, and a couple miscellaneous cables lying around. It's just that the one that comes with the Rezound now has to go in its own special pile of cables (all by itself) because I can't use it with any other devices. Did not try with the old phone, though. Interesting that you say HTC's physical mods to the micro USB port are the same on the Inc and Rezound, yet the Rezound ships with a proprietary cable and my Inc came with a standard micro USB plug. I'll check when I get home.
it does seem at least that yes, any microUSB cable will work with the Rezound for both charging it and connecting it to your PC.
for the most part, you really only need the MHL support if you plan on going through HDMI out, which you'd then need an MHL/HDMI adapter cable anyway.
the only benefit to the cable that comes with the Rezound is the "snug fit" bit. whereas, it'd be nice if they had a car charger with the exact same micro A USB end to it as i find that all standard micro USB car chargers aren't as snug and depending on phone placement/movement, the connection can get a bit 'loose' and sometime stop charging.
i used to use this motorola car charger but because of how the cable pulled, the connection would constantly come loose unless i used tape to hold it in place.
It's not an MHL port. It's HTC's proprietary ExtMicro-USB port first seen with the HTC Flyer. An MHL port is a standard 5pin Micro-USB A/B port that detects when an MHL adapter is used, and uses those same 5 pins to support HDMI output. If you look at MHL ports on phones like the Evo 4G and Galaxy S II, they are indistinguishable physically from standard Micro-USB B ports. HTC's ExtMicro-USB is compatible with 5pin Micro-USB cables and 5pin MHL adapters. In fact, if you look at the HTC MHL adapter, it's shaped like a standard Micro-USB plug and only has 5 pins. What's different about ExtMicro-USB is that it has some extra pins compared to standard Micro-USB and MHL. I believe it has 6 extra pins, for a total of 11 pins. Those 6 extra pins are not used for MHL, for the reasons stated above. I'm not certain what those pins are used for, but if it's the same as the older ExtUSB (which is compatible with Mini-USB), then those extra pins are used for analog audio output, for use with stereo headsets, etc.
Why would they send you a cable for anything other then the phone #dumb.

The cable IS for the phone. You can use it to charge and sync. But the PORT can also be used to hookup an MHL adapter for HDMI output. That is IN ADDITION to charging or syncing via USB. The cable that comes with the phone just has a different connector yet is backwards compatable with any regular micro-USB cable.
I'm not sure why this is so confusing to people.
That being said...
Has anyone found a part number or where to buy cables with the non-standard connector?
I have plenty of micro-usb cables, and yes, they do work fine, but I am not confortable with how loose they are. WAY too much play. This especially worries me in the car.

Yea I have been trying to find this too. I was sent the Rezound as a CLNR for my Charge so I didn't even get the original USB cable that comes with the phone when you buy it. Sure the micro-usb cables work, but they feel pretty loose compared to other phones that are designed for micro-usb specifically.
ok guys this is NOT an MHL cable. as said before there is nothing special at all about it besides that it is a snugger fit. any micro usb will work with MHL and you still need the converter.

confused about USB cable

it seems that some people on the forum say they have a standard micro USB connector on the Flyer??? and most of the ebay sellers list standard micro usb products for the HTC Flyer

It's a generic micro USB connection. The extra's is just that, extra. And not mandatory. I read somewhere (could be here, could be somewhere else) that they made the different connector so you wouldn't use the charger on a device that can't handle the power. But you can use any micro USB cable to connect the device to your PC. And you can even use any micro USB charger, but you'll need a lot of patience as it'll take a long, long time!
While you can use a standard micro USB cable, I have heard it would be better to use the HTC one because it will stay in better. I have used a standard one just fine, but the HTC one does hold in better IMO.

Its both proprietary AND standard. As vj092887 said, you insert the micro-USB male plug "upside-down" from how you would on most HTC devices. And it plugs into the "bottom half" of the jack. All this is in respect to the tablet laying flat, with the screen facing up.
If you use the included charger or sync cable, it takes up the "whole" jack. Sync doesn't really make a difference. But the included charger is much faster than standard HTC Micro-USB chargers.

Shortly after I got my Flyer, I was at work and wanted to connect it to my laptop. And realized I had left my (HTC) cable at home, sticking in my PC there. I was also kind of disappointed as I had bought the flyer specifically because you could use a micro USB cable!
So, I thought, well, why not try it and see if it fits. And as I generally always first try to stick a cable in upside down (don't ask me why, even if I think about it, I'll try it upside down first ), I got lucky this time and found it fitted

If you mean with a HTC style power connector, no, that's for charging only. For data cables Ebay or Amazon has them for about $1 each.

I wouldnt buy those generic cables from ebay/amazon etc they are poorly made and can either break off in your device, break off the connector on the device, or short out.. I highly recommend getting either Motorola or HTC OEM cables. They cost $2 - $5 but its worth it.

Perhaps I wasn't clear enough. Although a standard micro USB connector works for me when transferring data I don't like how loose it seems in the Flyer's socket. So I want another cable just like the one that came with my Flyer, a micro ExtUSB cable. I've only found mini ExtUSB cables not micro ones, hence my request for an inexpensive cable source.

there are no inexpensive extUSB cables...i don't know where you are but try expansys or amazon in your country...they're all upwards of $20
There is no 3rd party source for the non-standard HTC proprietary connector.
HTC manufactured Windows Mobile and Android-based devices have a proprietary connector called HTC Micro ExtUSB (Extended USB). ExtUSB combines Micro-USB (with which it is backwards-compatible) with audio input as well as audio and video output in an 11-pin connector. The extra pins also allow for higher charging currents.
If you really want to spend on a high quality cable, here you go, the best, most expensive per foot USB micro cable in the world . For ~$25 this should keep your Flyer and small pets from bursting into flame............

By the way, all the generic or other brand MHL adapters work fine with the HTC for connection to HDMI.

HTC Flyer Harware Connector

Hi,
who know the htc flyer connector. It's not a mini or micros standard usb.
1) Where can I buy these connectors?
2) Has anyone the pin layout and is it possible to transfer music via this connector (like HTC TD2/Topaz...)?
-> It would helpful for building a custom HTC Flyer craddle
Thanks, Alex
It's compatible with a bog-standard Micro-B USB cable, the same one that most phones now use.

It is a modified USB. Regular micro usb cables will plug into the port and will allow you to charge and transfer data. However, the proprietary HTC cable allows a quick charge with the right charger.
The shape itselves has no other meaning then just more solid plug in. I broke mine plug on charger and since i couldnt get original HTC one i simply solder the micro usb plug on it and it charges at full speed.
For charger only 2 wires comes to the plug and onlly 3 out of 5 conectors r conected; 1 goes to + 4 and 5 to - ; 2 and 3 r bricked (important). Flyer now charges at full speed.
There is no need for soldering. Just flip any micro-usb connector upside down and fits right in, charging, data transfer etc.
