External Hard drive for Qtek 9100 - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario Accessories

Hi All,
I'm going on a trip in a couple of month and I would like to be able to watch dvix movies/tv shows on my qtek while travelling.
i only have a 1GB miniSD card and the 2 GB card would not be large enough
Is there a some sort of external hard drive I can somehow connect to my qtek so I can watch my movies?
Would http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=14147&vpn=WL-HDD2.5&manufacture=ASUS: work?
Thanks a bunch.

That's an idea. It should work, but don't take my word for it. If you can access your pc's shares thru wi-fi I don't see why this wouldn't work. Just do what I do and make up another excuse to buy it something like "If all else fails, it will make a cool paper weight" oh and here http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833320110 $30 something off, if they don't screw you with the shipping this is not bad.

haha.. nowadays i get yelled at cuz I have collected too many paper weights..
I just tried mapping a drive to my computer and it sorta works..
only problem is when i watch a movie using tcpmp, it stops for a few seconds(spinning RBYG hourglass comes up)..
is there any settings to aleviate the network lag?
i've overclocked to 252 while watching with TCPMP.
also, i gots a problem.. i need some sort of battery power harddrive enclosure for portability??

Hmmm as far as a battery power harddrive enclosure, can't say I have seen one. I've played a bit of video accessed from my pc's shares and it's played ok, but I haven't tried to play anything while any of the other pc's on my network were on or my pc was using the connection, so mayb it could be too much traffic in your network at the time, can't say for certain now, cause I switched my router and modem for a 327w router/dsl modem and this piece of ^%$#%^$ isn't letting me access my shares at the time.
Word of advice to any who might have verizon dsl.... stay away from the versalink 327w, at first I though it was me who had the problem, but after some searching on the net i see that there are a lot of people having issues with it.

i just have one pc downloading off usenet.. i guess the problem might be the $5 router i'm using right now..
i guess there is no such thing as a hard drive that you can plug in to the qtek..
2gb minisd is the only way to go then...

Sadly sometimes we just gotta learn to adapt, but you might try looking at other options, look for a program called VEMOde. It's a program to encode video files it has settings for portable device, this way you can shrink your video files down considerably and they would still look good on your MDA. Anyways good luck to you bro. If I think of anything else useful I'll post back.

thx dude, i just used vemode and the file size are 1/2 the size now!

Yeah it's pretty awesome, I've been using it for some time now. I used to use it for my psp, now I use it for my MDA. Anywho glad that helped, later!

why not just carry a laptop? its a phone/pda and i think HTC did a great job making it small and usable. i could understand that you love the device and want to do everything possible with it but do you really want to be carrying around cables, extra batteries and a portable HD for a phone? its just a phone/pda phone with an okay processing speed.
I know how it is to have a device and want to do everything with it, i had the XDA Exec and wanted to use it as a laptop replacement and phone. but i fast realized that 1. it was just to big to use a phone 2. i was speeding way to much time configuring it and trying to convince myself that it will replace my laptop.

i don't have a laptop and my gf has forbidden me from making any major purchases after i bought my qtek.. that's until I get her an engagement ring
it'd be nice if i could just hook up a 30GB hard drive to my qtek..
i don't have time to watch the tv shows at nite, so the only time is on the way to work/home..

I've been looking for something like this for awhile with my 8125. I've seen a promising product announced at CeBit:
http://features.engadget.com/2006/03/13/live-from-cebit-the-widrive-wifi-drive-enclosure/
Supposed to be a battery (2 hour?) powered wi-fi enclosure for 1.8 or 2.5 inch drives. Looks to be available around July or so. This would be perfect for me; 1.8 drives are around 60GB (80 just announced), and would give me the space I need.
I have the ASUS, and its nice, but battery powered would be killer. I can't wait until the Wi-drive is released.

Thanks that looks interesting - seems to have miniusb charger port a plus!

Unless the device provides an HTTP daemon to serve the files, you won't be able to access them from the device. You may also require a WiFi Hotspot/hub for the Wizard to be able to "see" the device, since neither will be able to act as the host for an Ad-hoc connection.
You won't be able to connect the devices with USB, since there is no USB host or generic USB-Disk 'client' on the Wizard.

Hello guys,
i use pocketdivxencoder for shrinking my videos. I get about 180MB for one full-time movie.
I use the settings:
2pass
B-frames
15fps
206kbps (wich equals to quality 9)
I know, fps 15 is quite low but you won`t notice the difference on the mda cause auf the screen.
Image quality is quite cool on the small device.
perhaps you should check it out.

If you use a more simple encoding (1-pass, low quality) you can get 25 or 30fps because the CPU will take less time decoding. The video will look more smooth and the artifacts will be practically invisible on such a small LCD. I get 640x480 vids running at full speed on my Universal using nice simple encoding

Thanks for the tips guys, i was using vemode but i always had problems loading it.. i will try pocketdivxencoder!
cheers

My old e800 did this...
1st post folks!
When I install Ratoc's USB host drivers for Pocket PC onto my Toshiba e800 (which I am selling on ebay - goodbye, old friend) I can hook up and browse my Iriver H340 and even my sister's Ipod. So I can just copy films over onto a folder on the H340 and be able to watch them using TCMP.
Basically the Pocket PC acts as a USB host device and is able to see any USB drive hooked up to it. Does the Wizard have this ability, or is it at all possible?

Welcome fuzzywuzzy, Ratoc dont seem to do a version that ties into a minsd card. In theory you should be able to with the wizard (if a manufacturer would make a minsd to usb link cable) but no-one has had success. Would be great if you could

hard disk for xda - any ideas or experiences?

Now we all know how great this gadget is as a portable mp3 player,
Its also great for the car.... I no longer use my Cooltrax Mp3 player for long journeys... If anyone wants to try this - Maplin
www.maplin.co.uk
in the uk sells a £10 cassette adapter
http://www.maplin.co.uk/products/module.asp?CartID=030421125121999&moduleno=33816&modulecode=
That also has a handsfree mic (the mic wont work though) ... and enables you to plug the xda into your car hi-fi easily. But more importantly it has the 2.5mm headphone socket, unfortunately only a standard one, not the strange nonstandard xda version with four poles! The only downside is the usual "mobile phone noise interference" when it tries connecting to gprs while the music is playing, unless anyone knows of an easy way of shielding the cable! (get the baking foil out!)
Whats the ONLY downside of using this in the car?
Storage! With the cost of MMC cards being high, and a few games roms filling your mmc card, I started to ponder about using an external hard disk with the xda.
Obviously using a MMC>PCMCIA adapter, then plugging in a pcmcia laptop hard disk is convoluted - not to mention probably quite expensive.
Then I discovered the USB Mass Storage drivers, for pocket pc http://www.deje.gmxhome.de/download.html
which were developed for the Casio pocket Pc.... That got me thinking.... does it mean that you could install the drivers... fit the USB cradle in the car, and use some kind of usb gender changer plug to connect the xda to an external hard disk...
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/prod...m9kdWN0X3NwZWNpZmljYXRpb25z&product_uid=35706
Wow just think, you could put all your music from your home pc in your glove compartment! and power it from the cigarrette lighter (obviously splitting the power into your xda as well) Occasionally loading it up by connecting it to your home pc!
Has anyone tried this, unfortunately I dont have a usb hard disk... :?:
obviously the xda is only usb 1.0 but presumably usb hard disks are downwardly compatibile, and the data rate required for mp3 would not be too much for the poor old version of usb to stream to the device for playback?
The xda user manual and website just says interface is USB (no version specified)
According to the Iomega website this drive does support USB 1.1
http://www.iomega-europe.com/eu/products.aspx?productId=HDD80USB20External
What are your thoughts guys?
No
Derek,
The answer is no. Enter 'slave' in the search function of this board and you will find the reason.
Sorry for the short response to your enthousiastic and long question/suggestion but the weather here is just TOO good te be inside the house.
c ya
thanks climber,
I wasnt aware of the term "slave" in relation to USB. Presumably this is just a software term with regards to the OS, or is it a more fundamental hardwired connection from the connector onto the xda data bus, that software would not be able to repurpose into being a "master device"
Derek
Make every CD as 512M Harddisk for your XDA!
Here is the solution!
http://www.pocketpcpassion.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=30816
Don't think so
Well..... it depends on your requirements I guess.
Not mine!!!
Robert
Thanks for the suggestion Joey, but I have to agree with climber... whats the point of connecting a laptop to it. Sort of defeats the object of using the xda as a in car mp3 player, why not use the laptop instead!
I'd like to have a seperate removable hard disk just connected to the xda.
shame the host/slave issue cant be resolved.
What about the PCMCIA adapter method?
Ayone tried that out?
Also a no go. An MMC PCMCIA adapter uses SDIO (as do all cards which are not 'simple storage' cards). The XDA unfortunately does not support SDIO - one of those short sighted O2 thing.
I think they wanted to prevent us from sticking Bluetooth cards in and using them instead of their pricey GPRS netowork!
Shame...
I'm keeping my optimism for the future.... Keeping my chin up despite all the tales of woe...
Hopefully one day soon someone will post a solution with some new fangled device/software combination, either that or wait until 40 gig mmc cards appear...
I'm guessing at 2007, plus of course another 2 years for the cards to become affordable.
Of course by then none of us will want the xda.
yeah same here.....
First of all, I am happy with my XDA...........now!
This might change in the future when others enter that market as well. I have worked for Compaq and my old buddies over there (now HP of cousre) snicker about the XDA.
That has two reasons:
A) they are plain jealous because the iPAQ can't yet
B) they know what is coming up next at HP
If would bet (my mom just don't allows me to  ), I would put my money on HP bringing out something like that in the future. The question is when and will it do my laundry as well?
QUESTION TO DEREK: you describe the cassette thing.... what is your experience on sound quality???
You might have seen my home grown carkit and i think of using that for the speaker. http://www.xda-developers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=853
Robert[/url]
'USB on the go'
Hi,
The soon-to-come new standard called 'USB on the go' would solve your problems.. If you get for example a hd-chassis with this on built-in, you could possibly connect that chassis directly via USB to your XDA )
You can read more on http://www.usb.org/developers/onthego

Dont do it!
Just buy the cable!
I jacked up my USB port doing the cheapo method. Becareful.
But yeah, I hooked it up to this little 13" TV VCR combo from the freakin 80's..... WOW thats all I am gonna say. I was VERY impressed with overall sound and pic quality. Havent hooked it up to any of the big panels yet....
Well I have an extra adaptor, but when I was pricing Ipod/camcorder cables they were $30 everywhere. The expanys HTC cable is on backorder for .........................? When I talked to expansys they were over 2000 on backorder!!!!
its really simple to make ur own cable. follow the directions and u shouldnt have any problems, its difficult to damage the usb connector on the phone since ur only plugging in a cable.
Cable
I havent heard about this cable or feature before. What exactly does it do? I dont live in a big city, do I need a certain type of connection or package?

I would beg to differ but thats fine. Here is my exp but thats just mine... (and quite a few others reported the same) but its all on your tools and and skill level.
Me personally, I am ISO certified soldering techinican. Had I been in a shop I am sure the results could have been different. But if your doing this home brew, just becareful you dont crimp the pin that they ask you to remove.
When you are removing one of th pins it is, as nearly everyone says, diffcult. Sometimes the pin gets wedge and that is what happaned to me. Its not ruined but its a hair looser than normal and causes the phone to disconnect from active synch more easily.
EDIT: That is why I dont receomend it. Others have reported great success. It also depends on one of the five methods you use.

It allows you to hook your phone's screen and adio output up to a TV. And it works great!
The quality amazed me when I saw it. The sounds was good. I was very impressed. But that was only on 13" TV VCR combo in my basement office. I have yet to hookit up to something bigger....
Butyeah, its way freaking cool... Were were bored and streaming YouTube to the TV then surfed with Opera.
ITs the bomb

That blows. I want the cable but have no real use for it.
But another cool thing, use Media player to stream audio to headset adpator, use video out in a PIP so you can see what is playing.......
But is cool. Go ahead and make the cable just make sure your careful.
So with a premade cable its plug n play?
Would I just connect the 3 plugs to the tv and play something in
TCPMP (or other video player)?
Yup, thats how it works. I play movies in mp4 format through Windows Media Player and it looks really nice. I have about 7 full length movies on my StorageCard at the moment.
Expansys has the HTC Video Out cable back in stock (usually). They are not on backorder as bad as they were at first. Well worth $20 in my opinion, I have watched quite a few movies with it so far.

[Q] Unable to use flash drive storage

Hey people,
Massive regret if this has already been covered to the point of solving somewhere but i just can't seem to find a clear solution to my problem.
One of the main reasons i opted for the Archos 101IT was because of the usb storage possibilities and i am sadly let down by the lack of functionality. After searching over XDA forums, ArchosFans and a few other forums i have gathered alot of information about the usb ports and was even suggested a kernel that will let me extend the power supplied to the port (Currently only 100mAh i believe?)
My problem is im already on a different kernel and don't wish to trade my perm root and higher overclock just so i can use the ports as they should already work anyway. I have a 16gb and 8 gb sandisk flash drive that i would love to use but sadly it dosn't work. I also found a conversation (can't seem to find it again) where a list of successfull usb host adapter cables was created and so believing it i went ahead and bought one and it still dosn't work.
I have no doubt in my mind it's probably something i am doing wrong and if someone could slap me in the right direction i would be very greatful.
Again, sorry if my attempt at searching has failed but despite the countless conversations on this topic the only solutions that i have come across are completely changing my kernel and a cable that didn't work!
Why is it so difficult to use damn storage? that's what the usb is there for am i wrong?!
Thanks in advance =]
your post doesn't make that much sense - Archos 70 and below requires usb host cable - the 10 already has a full size usb host port and sufficient power to run flash drives
Yes it does, but as i said it only powers up to 100 mAh without the usb power kernel and i believe it's the mini usb that powers higher normally. It's my understanding that on the other posts i have read a host cable from the Mini usb port is supposed to give you the option of powering a flash drive as the mini usb offers a greater power supply.
I hope this makes sense now, im just reporting what i'v gatherd viewing other peoples issues and im confused to hell about any real/ideal solutions and also as to why the bloody thing can't just work as advertised.
Maybe if we can't get any meantime solutions people could start listing what's working for them? If anything at all? As i have seen reports of success with flash drives on both the 101 and 70 and also people saying they had it working at one time then it's never worked since. All threads seem to end in either "Sold my archos" Or "Sent back to archos and and they replaced it but now it's still not working" Also i can see archos have no apparent interest in the complaints that people have made.
Cheers
The 100mA limit is only on the A70. The A101's full-size host post puts out about 450mA, but alot of devices have an initial spike higher than that in the initial plug in, just to charge the capacitors and enter active mode. The problem with the A101 is that it shuts down current when it spikes like that, resetting the device, and requiring another start-up cycle. No solution I know of yet. I've managed to find low-power devices, you can also use an in-line power supply usb cable.
Hi msticninja, cheers for your reply.
Sorry for my complete lack of electronics but im understanding that the flash drive's im using require more then the 450 just to power up and then they would use less?
Does inline mean a mains powered usb? as i have a 2 tb mains powred HD that i havnt tested yet but if it worked it would be a temp solution for home, but i would love to be able to use my flash drives (or any flashd drives) when on the go. Could you suggest some of the flash drives that have worked for you under that power spike?
Thanks!

Yes, after the power up they use less, but that initial spike causes the Archos to shut down the USB port.
Definitely try the mains powered HD just to test. Also, sometimes a really quick unplug and replug can help.
My Kingston Datatraveler G2 (16GB) works fine, and I have some generic 1GB sticks that work as well. It's kind of hit or miss, to be honest. If you have a local electronics store, they may have some that aren't packaged, so you could test them in-store.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Kingston-16-G...660?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item19c64a7c54
Is that the right one? I sadly live about 20 miles away from any decent modern electronic store so id rather just buy one, if there's anything i have learned about flash drives as a producer, you can never have enough and also they will always sell on ebay for near the original price.
Thanks again =]
Also, Just plugged an old microsoft mouse into the large usb port, it lights up for a second then turns off with no real connection made.
Tried the same mouse in the smaller usb port with a host cable and nothing happens, could be the cable though.

I don't think the mini-usb operates in host mode on the A101, only on the A70. As for the mouse, I have had better luck with wireless mice. I think the wired ones, older "red" optical ones in particular, use more power than I expected.
I think I told you the wrong USB drive though. I'm just plugging it in to double check and it's not working. Let me look around and figure out what I was using.
Haha yeh it was a wired oiptical one, i assume the wireless ones work better as most are powered by battery and im guessing the usb reciever only needs a small ammount of power. Is that the correct usb on the ebay link though? If so i will buy it asap as im desperate for a working solution.
Thanks =]
Looking through logcat though, I don't see a power error. I think I formatted this [email protected] with NTFS, and it can't mount it. Give me a couple of minutes to test this out.
Yep, that's the problem. I just turned on NTFS support in UrukConfig and it mounted just fine. That link on eBay should work fine for you as long as you don't use NTFS without urukdroid.
Ok cool, is it having trouble recognising it now? Both mine are Fat32 i believe in order to switch between my mac and windows computers, let me know if it still works when you can =]
It's fine with NTFS enabled in UrukConfig. Fat32 should work by default. BTW, you can enable NTFS support on Mac pretty easily. If you have files bigger than 4GB, it's essential.
Haha i havnt had to cross that issue yet as i mostly work with sound samples around 2mb or under, but i will definately be correcting that soon. So is this the correct model before i purchase it? im excited now that you have re confirmed it! =]

Thanks for the info!
Yup, that's the one. It's a tiny bit big, but it's very fast.
Haha mate, size isnt an issue at all, aslong as the damn thing works im going to be a happy bunny. All i have been missing since buying this thing is the extra storage. My sd card is currently running whole OS as it was needed for 'perm root' and it also has 259 swapfile so that's the 8gb gone. If this usb storage works it means i'll finally be able to free up the enitre internal storage i've been clogging up with music and movie for some more apps.
Wish me luck =p thanks again! =]
That's why I like to run Android from the Internal Storage, so I can remove the Sdcard without shutting the tablet down.
Good luck!!
As soon as a decent root comes along where i can overclock to 1.2ghz on internal storage id be more then happy to run on internal, sadly the only one i know is archangels and it only works when in a wifi area =/ unless im mistaken then id gladly eat my words! =]

Technically you could, but it's a bit of an involved process. You do need the SDE installed though. Actually, I wonder if anyone's tried ardatdat's kernel recently with Uruk. It hasn't worked for a while, but there's been multiple beta updates since the last time I tried it.
That would be very tempting, im on sde anyways. Just a question, whats the 1 watt speaker about in ur sig? Is that a hack?

My speakers went out, because they're horribly overdriven, like most people's. I replaced them with 1 Watt Kobitone speakers that have a higher sensitivity, so it's louder at lower volume settings, and can go to a very high max volume without damaging the speakers. It's a simple replacement, but you have to open the case and solder in the new speakers.

Data Transfer Fix.

A while ago someone posted a thread about the file transfer from the tablet to PC being extremely slow (I can attest.)
Anyhow in a brief moment of laziness and curiosity I grabbed my HTC Thunderbolt USB cable (knowing it would fit into the nook --same size) and plugged it up for file transfer. Needless to say now my transfer speeds for a microshdc^4 are around 3~4mbs+.
^Not sure if this will work for everyone but if you have a alternate cable available give it a try, because it is working great for me!
Sounds like they cheaped out and used a cable that only supports usb 1.1 then. Good to know; wish I had a compatible plug from another device for this.

Yep, will probably buy one there if I find that it bugs me a lot. Good to know
Can you charge NT through the Thunderbolt USB cable? (Through the wall socket of course, since the Nook Tablet doesn't charge via PC.)
I'm trying to cut down on my cable clutter. It is really irritating that generic USB cables (and my Nook Touch USB cable) won't work for charging NT - my table is just a mess of wires now.
I dont think it's the cable. I have 10 different cables, Gal S2, Nook Color, Acer A500 etc.. Only when I transfer to Nook Tablet do i have problem (example, 12 hours to move 2.3g files). To get around it i been using dropbox and syncing the files wireless and it's superfast. But Nook color is perfect and everything else.
I ever used differnt combinations of cables on another PC but still no luck. When i plug it in, it sees all 3 Nook Tablet connections but it's so freaking slow.
Not sure why no one else didnt notice this yet. It's a pain to do the wiifi transfers when i know the cable would take 1 minute. I dont really think the unit is defective. Im not sure what else to try..
(ps.. all the PC's im using is Windows 7 64b)
12 hours for 2.3 GB's? Jesus Christ - It took me like 10 minutes to Transfer 700 MB of Music onto my NT - Somethings wrong either with your comp, NT or cables and or memory card - I'd look into it
Yup, i had a folder of all my droid apps. But even if i move 5 apps, it takes 10 minutes. It's freaking crazy, but everything else on it is working so good.. Great battery life, 10+ easily.

I agree 12 hours for 2.3 GB is super crazy. Next time I move some data I'll take screen shots for comparison (nook cable / htc cable)

Android Tablet as a second monitor?

Hi guys,
I have limited space at my place and I really cannot have another monitor hooked to my laptop 24/7. I need a solution that I can hook up when I need to edit on premiere and that I can remove when I´m not editing. I know there is a way to do this wireslessly with android tablets but it´s super slow and useless for editing. I need to know if there is any way to use an android tablet as a second monitor via USB or HDMI.
I know there is an app for Android called DSLR controller (or something like this) that allows you to mirror Canon EOS camera on your tablet or cell phone using a usb host cable (I´ve tested this on my cell phone and it actually works). For sure there must be a way to do something similar and use a tablet as a second monitor using a usb cable. I´m going to post this on android forum and see what comes up.
cheers

I have been looking at the Habey BIS-6332B as a possible low power field computer using Android, and I am trying to find a good solution as to what to use as Monitor's (Has 2 HDMI OUT) that can be recharged easy by Solar and other means in the Boonies.
There is a Chinese outfit called Chinavasion that sells a slew of pretty cheap Android devices, and their Tablets have HDMI ports!
All the Apps I found so far are for Windows and Mac ONLY. None yet for Android-To-Android.
Curious if you found anything?
If not, any idea what area would need to be Hacked? I am not as interested in a wireless connected Monitor as I am just a better low cost TFT Screen; self powered like the Tablets. For a $65-$120 (US) Device, there has got to be a way
In my mind I picture just some Diodes that need to be reversed in the Tablet(s). Air Display in Google Play is the only one so far that looks close Win/Mac only? Any leads are welcome.
Thanks.
I'm actually searching for something like that.
I would love to output my cellphone to an old 10inch tablet.
I've been searching for tablet with video input with no luck.
