What is the Capital "E" on my ext. display?? - HTC Startrek

I have a capital E on my ext. display does anyone what this means???
Thanks

That means that you are connected to your GPRS network via an "Edge" connection.

@Datacrime, I suspect that you live in Islamabad and are on the Mobilink network. If so how do you find the Mobilink Edge network. Is it quite fast than the normal GPRS. If my guess is wrong then please forgive me and ignore this post.
Actually in Lahore we still anxiously await Mobilink to start Edge. By the way the external screen on my Smartflip still shows "G". Hope the day comes soon when this G changes to E

Sorry, I am not in Pakistan, i am paki but i live in Canada. Sorry about that. By the way thats crazy that yo have a star trek in pakistan, how much did that thing cost you over there???

I-Mate now have a distribution channel set up over here through a company called United Mobiles. It costed me Rupees 26,000 or roughly US $ 425

New User saying hello and an answer on 1900mhz

Hi all,
as a new XDA user have been reading through the forum with interest, found out a lot about my unit that I did not know and am sure there is a lot more to find,
My XDA is a Model PW10B1
Rom : 4.00.01ENG
Radio 4.20.00
Protocol 32S54
At the moment I am using a T-Mobile (UK) Sim in it and am happy with the service,
In answer to some of the comments on the board about using the phone in the US, I can confirm it does work fine, I got the best service on the US T-Mobile network around Denver where the GPRS worked fine, (Using the T-Mobile offer of GPRS at same as UK rates, managed to do anot of good data transfer), on the West Coast (LA) the phone works fine but no GPRS available, due to the network roaming agreement there.
hope that helps for anyone thinking about taking XDA to a US area
Ammendment to the Above,
I should say that my XDA is a Model PW10A1, but since installing 2003 the software page reports it a PW10B1
And the Test in the US was done before the 2003 was written over the standard ROM
http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=47035#post47035
This user says his won't work at all in the US.
Hi
Well all I can tell you is that my phone which is a 64mb UK o2 device worked fine, both on T-Mobile while in Denver and also in Los Angles, but only got GPRS service in Denver!.
Maybe the other poster had an older model, or some other reason i don't know all I can say is that my unit looged onto the US network as soon as the band was switched in the bootloaded.
I am back there next month, I will take a picture of the screen if you want showing it logged onto the netowrk if you want to see proof!!

Using xda2 abroad

Hi there... this is my first post so forgive me if i don't get the protocol correct!
Will my 02 locked phone work when roaming in europe because i have family in Germany and France and i will need to use my phone abroad?.
If it will roam OK i have no reason to unlock it.
Cheers
Yes, it will roam fine, but be aware that O2 charge a small fortune for GRPS usage abroad.
You should be able to get an add-on package for european roaming that will reduce your costs a bit, but it still works out very expensive. I have this addition yet I was recently charged £1.70 for a 4k download from France. Spain is even more expesive for some reason.

cingular 8525 in brazil problem

i live in the usa and i have the 8525 and i unlocked it and supercid unlocked it via pof's method.. i used fit4cat to tweak it out a little and the ptt hack to use voice command via the ptt button...
Right now i am in brazil and i have tried several peoples sim cards and none of them seem to work.. it does not give me the invalid sim message so i know its unlocked...have i done something to my phone with the hacks and unlocks that make it not workable in brazil ..is there some setting that i need to set in order to have the phone work in brazil on TIM or Claro that im not doing...
Please help.. as of right now i am sitting in a hotel room trying to get my phone to work via the internet...
thanks
-abe
anyone have any solutions???
I would say look at the wiki to find the registry tweak that enables the band selection in the phone options. And then try changing the band.
Brazil is a 900/1800 GSM-band country. Have you tried switching your phone to GSM-only?
Incidentally, I'm heading there myself next week, and I'm equally curious about how the phone will react to the network down there...
well, i hardreset the phone and put it back to orriginal and that still didnt work.. i also was online with cingular tech support and they said everything should be working.. well it isnt.. and they also said it could be the radio of my phone... so as of right now im sitting in a hotel in sao paulo downloading the rom from htc http://www.htcamerica.net/support/8525/software-downloads.html ...maybe if my install got messed up some how this will fix it... on another note.. my girlfriends Moto Pebl works fine with both mine and her cingular simcard.. full service.... how strange.. ..
if i didnt the regestry tweak to pick networks to be on that might fix it .. but i should be fully able to roam already...
if anyone has some ideas' im all ears..
I found a similar thread over on HoFo. One guy also posts a solution. Here is the link: http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1058899

well i must say.. i didnt think this would work because of the fact my phone should work here by default.. but hey.. i gave it a shot.. i did the tweak and in the phone settings tab i set the phone band to select network type = auto and select gsm umts to GSM(900+1800)+UMTS(2100)..then reboot to let it search again.. and blam.. it worked.. thanks guys...

one more question that is off topic... on the bottom of my 8525 the mini usb hole as a black lip around it.. on one side of it its flush with the phone and on the other side it is raised a little above the casing... is this the same with all of them.. or is the usb bezzle black thing deffective on mine?

I work for Cingular and know that they sometimes do things that don't seem logical. Like building the ROM and not allowing the auto detect of a network.
Hi there, I´m from Brazil, if you want call me, send me a pm first. I have a Tytn and universal working.

EUREKA!!! Thanks for finding and posting this, Abe. I'm having exactly the same problem in Australia and I did the same thing as you; now I have cell service!
BLAZES, CURSES AND GENERAL DAMNATION TO CINGULAR for removing the 'Band' tab from Phone | Settings. I mean really, if you'd never used WM5 before, how would you even know it was missing? It's like one of Rumsfeld's Unknown Unknowns.
HTC Tytn in Brazil - Easy with the Tweaking
Hi Guys!
Before you guys go on tweaking your devices to death, try something simple! I just got back from the Far East where my Dopod was running 3G. I had selected Auto on the network type and band. Guess what, my phone was dead! I reseted and hard reseted and eventually it occurred to me that the problem may lie in the networks setting. For some reason my Brazilian service provider (TIM) is sometimes unable to "inform" the phone what kind of network it is running and what band. Thus I forced it to GSM and selected 900+1800+ UMTS(2100). It works perfectly ever since!
Cheers
yeh, i cant figure out why they removed the band tab... it is very usefull to have... and when i was on cingular.com i went to a live techsupport chat where the woman told me my phone was deffective, and when talkin to her i realized i had more knowledge then her on the device and quickly x´d out of the window in the middle of the conversation... Bottom line is that cingular should have never removed that band tab from the phone.. well, im happy for whoever this post helps ....

wierd thing happend... after i did the reg tweak and had my phone picking up service i then went to install a few apps i needed on the phone... i didnt like the way things were going so i decided just to hard reset the phone and start from scratch... after a hard reset the phone suddenly picked up service with no reg tweak.. i cant figure out why this happend because i hard reset the phone before i applied the reg tweak and still got no service..... so no my phone had no reg tweak and service. ..strange.. i wanted to cover my ass so i applied the reg tweak again to be on the safe side...

I just replaced a buggy 8525 with a new Cingular 8525, and both of them have the black bezel sticking out from the outside just a bit. nothing a dremel tool wouldn't fix (/shudder/)
I have had the "no service" problem in both Sao Paulo, and Rio... I did the band selection registry change described on the wiki, will see tomorrow if the phone change or the reg. change fixed my "no service" problem in Brazil.
as a side note, the macro slide next to the camera lens was very loose on the old phone, would almost move by shaking the phone... the new phone has alot of resistance when sliding the macro knob...the old one must not have been attached to anything!
UPDATE: New phone works great in Brazil, I did the registry change to allow access to the "Band" selection in the phone settings, but did not have to change them from the default "Auto" settings to allow it to find the networks in both Sao Paulo and Rio. I believe the new phone fixed the problem.
Cingular 8525 in Brazil
You guys are fantastic! I cannot thank you enough for the apparent solution to the problem those of us with Cingular 8525s in Brazil have had.
I have lost many hours, not to mention some $$$, trying to get around the "no bars icon of death" on my 8525 when I was in Brazil. Cingular have been totally incompetent in trying to provide a solution, although they recognize a problem. I just posted a message in their forum suggesting they get their incompetent selves over to this forum to learn something.
I am going to try to apply the reg tweak, although I am not as technically competent as most of you. Now I can't wait until I have to go back to Brazil on business!
I'm from Brazil...
I bought an iPaq from Cingular long time ago, and I had a lot of problem to get it working here. Now I have 2 Qteks, on boght on Europe and other one bought in Brazil, both working great here.
I think the problem is always Cingular.

GR8 Conclusion!
I've mine TyTN as well, working good since that arrived here.
Hi
The problem actually is VIVO. The started a new GSM operation at the 850 band and since them all the Windows Mobile quadband devices (also triband with 850 Mhz) try to register first at Vivo. Due to a bad network configuration, the phone do not try other bands and networks and remains at SOS Only - Emergency Only since Vivo will not allow registration with another SIM card. The same problem happens with Smartphones too, even with Treo 650.

Here goes some "official info" I found:
Cingular said:
From Cingular:
International Roaming Device Issue
Issue Description:
Cingular has identified an international roaming issue impacting several
different handsets and resulting in loss of service. Specifically, users
may experience problems when devices are taken into an area where North
American (850/1900) and European (900/1800/2100) frequencies co-exist.
Cingular is not the only North American carrier impacted since the issue
is device-related, not network-related.
The following countries currently have carriers broadcasting on both
North American and European frequencies:
Brazil
Australia
Trinidad and Tobago
Thailand
The following are known devices impacted at this time:
Treo*
Samsung BlackJack
BlackBerry 7290, 7100g
LG CU500
*As a workaround, Treo users may leverage the devices ability to scan
for carriers on specific frequencies.
Current Status:
Cingular is in the process of engaging the device vendors identified
with impacted devices.

[Q] GSM/GPRS/3G Coverage and Services in Canada

Hi all,
Im from India and im about to buy my HTC HD2
Okay straight on to my query....
Im planning to shift to Canada to do my MBA from there in the next 8-9 months.
I already know that the HD2 is a quad band , world phone and its frequencies are supported in Canada.
My question is :
What are the Network Service providers in Canada that i can look for a connection purchase when i go there?
Also , if someone would be so kind as to give me details/websites where i can have a good comprehensive list of Data plans for my HD2.
P.S. its already clear but ill say it anyways. Im gonna buy the Standard HD2 version.
Please help me out ppl.
To the mods : If you feel this [Q] has been opened unnecessarily , then please excuse me as i could not find any such info anywhere in the thread.
Cheers
No help ???
What no CAnadian on this forum to give some info????
please help me out....
Bumpity bump...
Tutorial How-To for pre-MBA level user(s):
Question: "What are the Network Service providers in Canada that i can look for a connection purchase when i go there?
Also , if someone would be so kind as to give me details/websites where i can have a good comprehensive list of Data plans for my HD2."
Tutorial (for pre-MBA level users only, which having the difficulty in finding it itself):
1. Open internet browser (if you are using MS Windows, it will be the icon with the blue "E" logo of the Internet Explorer by default. If you're using Linux, then likely it will be Firefox by default).
2. In the address bar, type: www.google.com
3. In the Google's search bar, type: canada mobile provider
4. When Google will display the search results, right click on the first link displayed, stating: "List of Canadian mobile phone companies - Wikipedia..." (it will be blue again).
5. Choose: open in new window
6. The new window will be opened, and then, you will find the hidden and very difficult to obtain data about the Canadian mobile providers.
Additional information: to check the data plans, on the Wikipedia page, you have to click each provider's links to go to their pages.
Hope that this tutorial will help you, and you will go to Canada to increase your education level... definitely, you need it....
@spamtrash
Wow... this really shows ur maturity level ....
Anyone can do wat u said u fool...
Im asking the ppl who use the networks in canada
ive already visited all the sites for the network providers...
and like any common buffoon , u will believe wat is stated on the sites....
Ask the fellow man who uses these networks and he will tell u which is better for reception etc....
Im not talking about data plans .... even a kid can look it up...
Im asking for first hand experience...
and as far as ur comment.... looks like u had too much time at ur hands and no brains to come up with that,....
wats the matter ??? no jobs in the UK to keep u occupied???
In the first post, you wrote:
" if someone would be so kind as to give me details/websites where i can have a good comprehensive list of Data plans for my HD2."
now, you are stating:
"Im not talking about data plans .... even a kid can look it up..."
Emm... it seems that you are the kid, who wasn't able to look it up, first.
What is more and worse, for such "consequence" I have only one answer, my friend:
You have to ask for the psychiatric advice, because it can be or sclerosis, or shizophrenia, both of which can be (in the early stage) treated.
From another point of view: to compare the reception between the different networks, you have to ask the person, which uses two or more in the same time, using different network providers, which in the order, will have to use different MVNO Networks, as for example 7-Eleven will have same range as Rogers.
Too complicated?
I have stated: pre-MBA tutorial, not: Pre-MBA in India, so it can be too advanced for you to find and to compare by yourself.
And regarding my workload, I have some things to do... I have to correct all of the mistakes and compensate the damages caused by the located in India outsourced "helpdesks", basically because of the reason described in the old joke:
An Italian, French and Indian went for a job interview in England. Before the interview, they were told that they must compose a sentence in
English with three main words: green, pink and yellow..The Italian was first: “I wake up in the morning. I see the yellow
sun. I see the green grass and I think to myself, I hope it will be a pink
day..”
The French was next: ” I wake up in the morning, I eat a yellow banana,
a green pepper and in the evening I watch the pink panter on TV…
Last was the Indian, : “I wake up in the morning, I hear the phone
“green green“, I “pink” up the phone and I say “Yellow“
but this doesn't mean that I cannot read and answer some stupid questions to have the fun about the MBA (or: pre-MBA level) in India
P.S. Could you do me one favour? Please do not send me the PM's with the requests for answers, if I will have a time and a mood to go through your version of Hinglish, I'll definitely answer you, bro
@spamtrash
ha ha ha....
youre such a fuking retard....
LOLzzzz
There... hows that for my Hinglish for u ...
Maybe, but... I know the Candian coverage, tariffs, data plans, while... you know where to feed your sheeps, my dalici friend.
ha ha ha....
man dont stop
ur sooo funny
Wow! back to subject - I use Fido at the moment Fido is owned by Rogers it is Quad band GSM. It is a little less than Rogers. I have used CDMA (Bell) in the past but personaly did not like it. There are 3 Major Suppliers Rogers, Bell and Telus. There is a newer service called Wind mobile which has very competative pricing. Not availabe everwhere yet. If your going to a major city try Wind or try Fido "City" If going to Quebec try Vodaphone
HTC HD2will not work for 3g but runs fine on edge on Fido or Rogers (no 1700/2100 bands) but will run 3g on Wind. I have HD2 on Fido and am satisfied with edge
Fido and Rogers give you EDGE, and it works great for me.
Facebook mobile page loads in less than a second running on Opera 10.
Gamespot ( a gaming site ) running on Opera 10 with flash content loads in about 5 seconds. Rogers and Fido are the same company so you get the benefits of GSM 900 and GSM 1800 with no extra charge, that means better coverage overall.
Now if you plan to go with WIND mobile, which is the lease costly choice you must get the T-mobile version. WIND is a T-mobile branch for Canada.
I have both a T-mobile and a HK version. The HK version even though Unlocked will not support any 3G bands in Canada. But my T-mobile version runs with WIND mobiles 1700+2100 UMTS band which is 3G. WIND has great deals but the coverage is not the greatest if you live outside a major city, check the their web page for full coverage.
And the other service providers will not work with any version of HTC HD2/LEO.

see im on vodafone in my country and frankly speaking the egde isnt that great... the speed is ok but the charges a are a little too expensive....
How do u feel about the data usage charges??? are they reasonable for Fido or Rogers??
Thanks a ton for your feedback man....
I really appreciate you inputs
P.S. : even i am an avid follower of GAMESPOT
Hey guys can u also list a decent GPS app that works well in CANADA ???
Cheers
I have the Australian Telstra version and I get 3G/HSDPA on Rogers

Mobile network operator preference

Hi,
I've got a somewhat strange situation, I'd like to find a solution to. I live just by the border of Belgium and Holland and go over regularly to Holland. My Belgian provider of course goes into roaming mode when on a Dutch network, that's all fine like that.
The problem is, that since I live too close to the border, the phone often stays on the Dutch network instead of switching over to the Belgian - unless I do it manually.
Is there some kind of setting/app to switch to a preferred network when it's present?
My old HTC Touch pro had a network operator priority list, and it worked rather well with that - hope there's a solution for Android too...
Cheers.
Somebody asked exactly the same question a few months back but i doubt a search would find it and i don't know if they got an answer .
Same sort of location as well .
jje
I'd be very interested as well... Let us know if you find something, I'll check it out on my side.
I'm in the same situation, on returning to my home country my phone stays with the neighbouring country operator, and I pay unnecessary roaming charges. Any solution would be an absolute god send for millions of people who live near borders. It's weird, it seems like such an obvious app to produce. Any suggestions would be most helpful. This thread is what made me register on XDA. I have a Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000.
An app to display the available cell towers (cid`s) and the option to manually select would be great! Ever since Tmobile/Orange activated a new cell near me I continually connect to that instead of my `normal` Three cell and the bandwidth is crap.
