For people who have bricked devices, and haven't read the wiki... [email protected]! - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam Software Upgradin

A **NEW** feature has been added to the forum. It's called "SEARCH". It lets you find things from days-gone-by that could apply to your VERY situation! Also, a fantastic part of the site, the WIKI also has GREAT information. WIKI is like a big book of knowledge. It tells you how to FIX your brick without bugging the rest of us.
If you can't read the Wiki, and refuse to use the SEARCH button, NO ONE WILL HELP YOU FIX YOUR BRICK!
Oh, there is also one other way to fix your brick--guaranteed to make your phone stop being a problem for you... Take phone and all original accessories, and put in a box. Seal with packing tape, and bring to your local post office. PM me for the proper address to send it to (my home address, duh!) and I promise to take GOOD care of the phone! Expect it to be returned never.

Could you add in a bit for people who have not even done anything to check the wiki and use the search instead of PM/posting endless "how do i..." questions?

Ok, go easy guys.
Firstly, I suspect the type of noob who asks these sorts of questions wouldn't stop to read any posts (including this one) before going straight to the "Start New Thread" button. So this is probably just another futile effort to educate
And yes it's annoying, but we're all pretty tolerant around here aren't we? We will usually try to help noobs who ask a question, even if it's just a case of pointing them to the right page.
I find the best thing to do when confronted with a new batch of silly questions from lazy people, is to answer a couple and ignore the rest. Then log out, take a few deep breaths, and come back later!
That said, if there are any noobs reading this thread, please, please, please do use the search and the wiki before posting questions.

Yes, I agree...
Read and Search.
Otherwise the forum becomes a congested mess of repeated questions over and over.
I used to go on my 'soap box' over at TC, and even started threads on 'Search First'
When wpbear told me 'Search', I didn't get offended:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1136130&postcount=593
The people (noobs) who just show up and post a question and get insulted when asked to read up, are like someone who walks into library and expects the people reading books are there to stop what they're doing and answer questions.
Yea, it takes a little research to find what your looking for, but then you learn how to find answers for yourself.
Everyone Wins!

Regarding Searching First, I have heard arguments from both sides.
So whether one has an excuse for why they start a new thread or not, the end result is a bigger problem for others. (Bazillion Threads on the Same Topic.)
Let's pretend I'm the New Guy. I just found this Forum, and now, do I first see if there is standard of expectation from me? Or do I just jump in and start doing things my way?
If I take a little time to figure out how it all works, it stays more organized, and I have only inconvenienced myself. (I did the Work for Myself) But if I just start new threads on everything I think of, I have inconvenienced others by creating more clutter for everyone else to deal with.
Starting a new thread because of not being familiar w/ how things are done may be an excuse for a noob, but one should catch on pretty quickly. And nobody should be made feel bad because they asked them to do a Search.

Are you saying we should not mention the "Forum Guidline: To Search Before We Post"?
So the noob asks: (Post #1 ) 'What's the Flashing Snowflake Thingy?" We just tell him, and give him a Link?
So now the noob asks: (Post #2) "Why is my Hotsync hanging at my Contacts?" or "My computer says it Doesn't Recognize the USB Device"
So the noob just goes on, starting new Threads, everytime they need an answer.
To use an illustration:
What do you do when you go into a Library, Do you just go sit down and ask the people around you anything you want to know?
What if one of those people asked you to go and try to find the answer in one of the many books on that subject?

Your computer should not make ANY sound when you plug it in since this means you have not disabled Activesync's USB connection, please disable USB connections in Activesync... that means actually do it rather than pretend to.

Yes franula, basically untick every box in the ActiveSync "connection settings" menu, and click "Ok". You should NOT have the ActiveSync icon in your PC's system tray (next to the clock in the bottom right-hand corner).
Then put your Hermes into bootloader mode (by holding down the side "OK" button and the "Power" button, whilst poking "Reset")
Once you get the bootloader's tri-colour screen on your Hermes and you've completely disabled ActiveSync so that it is nowhere to be seen, THEN plug in the USB cable, and try mtty.....

You could have put it in a nicer way. If there are posts from newbies that are already answered in the wiki or in previous posts, we usually just point them to it.
Speaking of wasting space and congeting this forum, this thread is doing just that.

I did it! Everything is ok now.....

Er.... your question does not make a whole lot of sense??
MTTY.exe stays on the PC, it is not trasnferred to the phone.
Suggest you re-read the wiki.

I've always thought taking mtty.exe to a nice restaurant would be a good first date. mtty.exe gets around though, so, you'll need to make sure you have protection. I recommend having a spare floppy (disk) around to keep you safe..

Hey Legolas, I mean no offense to you and I know that it can be frustrating that people don't take a closer look at the wiki and forums, but it seems you've been getting extremely rude to anyone that doesn't ask an informed question. I don't mean just you either. There's been a few lately that have just been flaming people at the first opportunity. I'm not trying to be judgemental, but if we can't all keep this site civil, then we're going to lose both new and old members, many of whom do contribute a lot or might in the future.
I have read some really "interesting" questions that people ask and there have been a couple occasions where I haven't been completely nice about the answer either. But, we have to stay on track to keep this site, not just productive, but enjoyable too. If the site just becomes offensive and no fun at all, then what's the point? Maybe we should just put in a stock answer for questions like the one in this thread like "Read the wiki" and just leave it at that. Maybe that'll work, maybe it won't. I don't know.
But, I do know that we should be above name calling. The site has a good rep as a place to go for development and help, let's keep it that way.
At any rate, you're a cool guy that (like many here) have helped a lot of people out of a jam with their toys. Keep up the good work and... "stay on target".

It's strange, AFAIK the "latest" MTTY version is v1.16 (but, when you click "About" the version shown is v1.11a). I've attached this version to this post.
Make sure that when you use it you have deactivated AciveSync (uncheck "Allow USB connections" y "Connection settings").

Is there any known way to fix a bricked G4?

i'm a NOOB too but you can't expect to be spoon fed can you? this is THE development site for our devices and the guys here are helpful to a fault..but what would your mechanic say if you towed your car into the garage and said it doesn't work? you just didn't provide the information required to get an answer...not that you needed an answer from the guys here...it's all in the wiki or do a search it's been asked a thousand times. if your asking for help in future i'd suggest your more civil about, "you'll catch more fly's with honey"
Done that
I think the search engine is broken cuz I've searched for information about what I want to learn and it will tell that it's invalid. And I tried to be civil but the guy practically told me that I was an idiot, there's no need for it.

Strange . . . I didn't get that impression from the replies you got. As far as your searches saying "invalid", I have no idea exactly what your search criteria was, but you might want to use this in the future.
As far as knownuser's reply, he's right on the money. Noone here "owes" you any thing. It's up to YOU to do the reading to learn what you need to know. Everything you need is either in the Wiki or in the forums' threads. The developers here are developing and they don't have time to respond to questions that have already been asked -- and answered -- a thousand times over. If you're not willing to learn by taking the time to read the information that's already available on here, then you don't belong here in the first place. The developers here don't have time to spoon feed every noob that keeps asking the same question over and over.
Now, if MY response makes you feel like an idiot -- if the shoe fits . . .
OK . . .
One . . . I never said that anyone OWED me ANYTHING. Two . . . if it's a question that YOU or anyone else has previously answered, then why answer it again and get frustrated? JUST DON'T REPLY! WOW! Sounds so hard . . . So I screwed up, sue me . . . >=P
P.S. And NO, you didn't make me feel like an idiot. You just made yourself look like a stuck up jack ass

There's a reason many members get frustrated when forced to answer the same question on a regular basis. In their/my eyes this indicates a lack of understanding and reading on behalf of the member who posted the question. This is a known problem with many forums.
P.S You would be well advised not to abuse other established members who obviously know more than you do. On the off chance that you do require assistance again in the near future, abusing other members pretty much gurantees you wont receive it.
Understandable
FINALLY! Someone explaining things WITHOUT trying to rip me a new one. I understand where you're coming from, but I did apologize for being ignorant yet people felt the need to unload their repressed anger towards me. I am truly sorry for getting ahead of myself and I do appreciate all of the hard work that all of the senior members have put into making our HTC experience a good one; but that tends to make themselves into arrogant monarchs who become full of themselves. Trust me, I know what it's like to get frustrated, I'm a karate instructor who has to deal with kids from ages 4 and up 5 days a week. And if any parent here is reading, they know how tough dealing with a 4 year old can be. Try dealing with 30 at a time . . . But no matter how much more I know than someone in the martial arts, I NEVER act better than them. It's bad for business. So in closing, Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this board but frankly some of you need to cool down a bit. Thanx Peter Petrelli (love the SN, Heros rocks!) for being the only one to politely tell me what I did was wrong.
Best way to deal with Senior members with tendency to flame newbies (i confess!) is to ask like you're Shrek's ***** cat making those 'feel pity for me' big eyes:
"Can you please kindly tell me..."
"I've searched for hours and haven't had much luck in finding the..."
"I've used the search engine a lot but most of the results don't work. Can anyone point me on the right direction?"
and son on and so forth
cheers

I love noobie bricks!!
Ok I get interested reading a thread like this.
Honestly is it not easier to say: I have a phone blah blah, which I tried to blah blah blah, and all I'm getting is blah blah, can someone guide me on what to do or is it dead or not dead? (I think bricked has been abused in this case)
All will easily be explained and someone will help. Details do help! First thing I do, whenever I want to do something is read and read the forum. Thats why I have less posts! ha ha I would have asked alot but frankly all the info (to a certain degree) has been provided
noob mistake from a PC tech, lol...
I very stupidly didn't check to see if a Wizard was a G3 or G4 and flashed the WM5 IPL 1.01 downgrade on it thinking it was a G3 and I was setting up for use with LokiWiz. It tried to boot after the flash, but it froze. Now, it just flickers for a split second when I attempt to power it on. I tried entering bootloader through camera + power, camera + reset, comm + voice + reset, as well as mail + camera + power, and nothing is making it enter bootloader. I'm figuring that in my assumption I made an a** outta myself and finally bricked my first phone, after sucessfully flashing about 20. I read somewhere that you could cut your power cord and tap the live contacts to pins 1 and 5 and unbrick a seriously bricked phone, but can't seem to find the article again. Would someone kindly point me in the right direction? Also, has anyone had any luck with this method?
To enter bootloader you keep 'voice' pressed and poke the reset hole briefly but then again it's nothing that doesn't come in the wiki
One of the things that I tried. I didn't list it though, I'm going nuts with this phone. When I do that it still shows nothing. What I think I did was flash the G3 bootloader on a G4 device. Does anyone know the cut cable method?
No, if you do so and make your Wizard can't even power on, then it's a brick. It is nearly impossible to recover unless you know the JTAG method (AFAIK, only 1 person here successfully unbrick a really bricked G4, and he didn't tell us how).
my suggestion for the bricked phone (if indeed it is bricked, ie., it won't turn on at all) is to call HTC up and see if you phone is under warranty. I bought my cingular 8125 off of ebay and i use it with a canadian provider, so there is no warranty from anyone in that case, but suprisingly, when i bricked my G4 and I was gonna send it to get it fixed at whatever cost they were gonna say, they went by the IMEI # and said that it was still under warranty (irrespective of the fact that i bought it off of ebay and that i wasnt a cingular customer) and fixed it at no cost. They even changed the entire housing and put a new one on there for free (no idea why). So call them and try it. You have nothin to loose by calling. Good luck, i understand the pain and anguish and the "kick myself in the a**" feeling when yo flash a G3 onto G4 unknowingly coz thats what happened to me. again, good luck.

[Q] I think I can stump xda forums... seriously messed up 16gb

It's been a while since I've worked on this, and I still can't find anyone with a similar problem on xda. Does anyone have a clue what's going on with this thing?
First, I got it working just fine with CM7 installed to the nook itself, not running from an sd card. That worked for a bit, then it started just shutting off with no obvious reason.
Also, if I make any changes, like uninstalling apps, it goes right back after a reboot - which happens whether I want it to or not. This applies to changes done with CWM as well, even installing a new rom.
On top of that, it won't boot from an sd card, so that sucks too.
Lastly (I think, it's tough to keep track of all these problems) abd doesn't recognize the device, and for that matter the operating system doesn't either. I've been using Ubuntu Lucid if that matters, but it didn't have issues detecting the device before.
I'm pretty novice, but I think this is a very complicated problem in need of expert advice. Any answers, tips, advice, or pointing in the right direction for any of my problems here would be awesome. Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks.

Thanks, that reminds me, I did follow all steps to the letter without a hitch to get CM7 going. It wasn't until after it was running for a few days that this happened. One: This was a completely pointless flaming. Two: For being a novice he seems to be a bit more informed than you are. This is an issue, however not a common one. And from what I have read in these forums there is not as yet a fix. Three: I didn't read any ungratefulness, criticism, nor any hint of being upset. And Four: If you can't help out or give any useful advice then maybe you should "leave this forum alone" until you learn to be more civil.

Alright, so thanks to old_fart and DavDoc I've determined two of my problems, and I think there are four.
First, DavDoc's linked thread describes perfectly what's happening with problem one, what I'm calling the Groundhog Day Syndrome for no particular reason. Any changes to my nook go right back after it's powered off.
Second, I checked out old_fart's linked thread and I'm pretty sure even though I have a blank screen it's still on in one mode or another. The program doesn't work though because of problem #3 (to be explained) but it seems sensible because to power it back on I must first hold the power button for an extended period of time and release, then hold it again for the normal power-up.
Problem number three is that the nook is not recognized by either Ubuntu or Windows when plugged in anymore. Thus that program not working, and also adb. I may be able to determine that one from error logs as soon as I figure out what in the world the error logs are saying.
Fourth and hopefully final, it won't boot from sd. I'll figure that out too.
Thanks for the advice so far, this forum is definitely indispensable for people who like to learn from playing with technology.

HELP!

Hello there. Basically, I was on the newest (I think) Alliance Rom with Dorimanx kernel for s2. however, it began to get quite buggy, and I tried to flash a new kernel onto it. Siyah. then I tried to flash Cyanogenmod onto it. Restarted, phone won't load past the siyah logo. But I get the siyah recovery menu thing still. But when I try to install the cyanogenmod zip, it fails. I have no other roms on my sd card, or kernels, for that matter.
Please can somebody advise me what to do. I need my phone for work in 5 hours! I was thinking a fix possibly with Odin? Although, I'm guessing if I wiped the phone, kies will no longer be on there. Not sure what it means for it.
thanks.
It's Jellybean by the way
1) Use a more descriptive title than 'HELP !'. Many people will ignore your thread/not read it for that alone (which means you might miss out on help).
2) If you've still got CWRecovery, you still should be able to flash something without resorting to Odin. I would suggest perhaps you're not following the instructions on the first page of the CM thread to the letter. Try it again.
If you really can't flash anything in recovery & still have bootloop (I.E recovery seems broken), get a stock rom from Samfirmware, flash it with Odin = clean slate & you can then re-root your phone & have another go at flashing whatever rom/kernel you want to use.
Thanks, and thanks for telling me about the title, I guess, my apologies, but urgency is urgency.
I can't get any zip files onto my phone or the SD card. so flashing from the phone is pretty much a no.
I can try Odin, however, I barely know what it is. Is anybody willing to just tell me what to click?
No spoon feeding allowed mate. No one will hold your hand and tell you what button to click. I may as well fly over there and do it myself.
If you want to know about Odin flashing click the link in my signature and look at the section on how to flash.
But, I still don't think you need to use Odin. In CWM recovery, Mount usb storage, connect to pc, transfer rom.zip onto phone sd from pc, unmount usb & then flash rom. Done.
Sent from a galaxy far, far away
Okay.. Seems a bit odd, being a help section, in a forum. I just figured since I'm dealing with something that could potentially break/brick my phone, I would rather do it right as opposed to wrong, considering I have never done it myself before.
Thanks though, I didn't actually know I could mount it without actually booting the phone. I'll try that.

Yet you still haven't changed it. Urgency may well be urgency, but you either want to make that small change & potentially get the help you need if you get stuck further, or you don't. No skin off any of our noses either way *shrugs*.
P.S - Forum rules are forum rules.
Edit - And the reason Hopper said what he said - this may well be a Q&A forum, but that doesn't mean we regurgitate stuff that's been asked/answered thousands of times over the past two years for any n00b who thinks they deserve same.
I'm not even being harsh with what I say. I didn't write out the steps, but I did give you a direct link to a place which lists the steps. That's a legitimate A to your Q.

Just a few more that just say "help". I can see that it is not posing a ****ing problem. Not to mention (may be my fault) but I don't see any way to change the title.
As far as I'm concerned mate, I wanted help with something, went to the HELP section of a FORUM, and got help, so you can go **** yourself if you have a problem with that. I don't go to forums to just chat about my day. If what I did ask was too much for you, then just let someone help who is more helpful than you. I didn't ask anybody to troll the net for files, or anything of the sort, I asked for legitimate help with something I didn't know how to do.
Either way, I've managed to fix the problem, so no more needs to be done.
Thank you to those who gave me advice.

Please show respect to senior members. They have been here longer than you, obviously dealt with problems much similar to your and want you to search for yourself, that is why the search buttons are there. Did you watch 'I am a noob in XDA Developers' video?
And you obviosuly have no idea why they say this, but it's because you will learn for yourself. In near future you will search and find answers yourself if you start now (which they are trying to make you do) other than just relying on other people to do your work for you. That's not the way XDA developers work.
So rather then being disrespectful and throwing insults at them, you should thank them

Yes - I appreciate the fact that I was helped the amount I was, but I could say the same. Is that the best way to treat new members? I have already apologized twice for my mistakes, at least, and I STILL have people telling me I'm doing things wrong. Also, it's not like I haven't thanked them. I think I thanked them at the end of nearly every post. Anything else to pick at?
I'm not trying to disrespect - just trying to prove my point. If you didn't want to help me, don't, just don't ***** about the fact that I wanted help. :/
My problem is fixed, that's all that matters.
thanks again.

Yes it's the right way to treat new members.
You are doing things wrong, respecting other members is a rule of XDA and you're not doing it - so you're doing it wrong.
Good you thanked. But was i necessary to disrespect. Yes you were disrespecting.
Prove your point? That it's okay to spoonfeed newbies and making them think that they wont have to do anything, just ask and wait?! No that's not right, as already stated.
You wanted to help how exactly? To tell us that we should do it 'the way you like it'? No that's wrong, accept it!
Dont come here and try to flame, there's a rule against that. Take you crap elsewhere, cause with that attitude you probably wont get much help around here or anywhere else for that matter.
This is my last post and visit here, so dont even bother commenting if there anything about me.
