GPS Antenna - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam Accessories

Is this all I would need to receive a GPS signal on my i-mate JASJAM?
http://cnn.cn/shop/8525tytnhermes-antenna-p-1615.html

I just sent the following inquiry to them, I'll see what they respond.
It sure would be sweet if that is all it needs!

Does this item imply that a Cingular 8525 has a built in GPS that will become active using this item?

Thanks

think their is a thread about this topic and sad to say it does say a GPS solution other than buying a reciever is very much improbable..

here's the link to the topic:

My solution was to purchase the Garmin Mobile 20 cradle. www.garmin.com
The cradle holds the phone and has a suction-cup mount for the windshield. The cradle plugs into the cigarette lighter and has a charging cable that plugs into the mini-USB port on the phone.
Software can be loaded on your memory card (I have all North American and Canada).
For less than $250, I have a very good navigation system that travels with me.

promising product but kinda expensive though.
OP, if your considering Erik Latranyi's suggestion, you may want to consider buygpsnow.com, i dont work for them but i can swear by their good service. they have packages too that you can choose from and more cheaper than Erik's setup.

That antenna on cnn is not for hermes. It plain and simple will not work. The connector on the phone that it is shown linking too is a GSM antenna connector for car kits.. it will not provide GPS.. not now.. not ever.
Bluetooth GPS's are easier/cheaper/faster/tidier and the real killer... possible
So go for one of those instead. I use a $50/35GBP Holux bluetooth GPS with my hermes.. works fine.
(on the plus side.. if you are lucky the cnn antenna wont damage your phone.. if you are unlucky it might well)

CONFUSED...is the blue angel connector same as the XDA II???

Ive read many post on here and others. I must say Im confused.
Is the new Blue Angel connector physically the same as the previous XDAII connector?
Are the pin outs the same?
Some people say no problem, some are filing theirs down??? Some are "forcing it in" - YIKES
i would love to know as well
The pin outs are the same - the connector is physically the same size, but there is one minor change - there is a little 'step' on one edge of the connector.
XDAII accessories, such as chargers, usb and gps do fit but you need to be careful when you insert them.
Forget my stupidity. I used to own the Siemens SX56 and had hotsync and car charger cables.
The question is now I have the Siemens SX66, is it safe to use the same cables from the SX56? I haven't tried it since I don't want to kill my new toy!
If anyone knows or can verify that it's safe it would be really appreciated.
I am using car charger, usb sync cable and wired gps that were originally bought for my XDA1, then used on XDAII and now work fine on MDAIII.
Do any of the serial keyboards work with XDA IIs?
I tried to connect the stowaway keyboard I used with my XDA II but it does not seem to work with my QTEK 9090.
I'm only guessing, but I would think that the drivers weren't written for wm2003SE.
I have the darfon fold out keyboard that I bought for my sx56, and last night I got it working just fine with my new sx66, so yes, they work. I needed to go to darfon.com and download the newest version of the driver.
I have one of the IR keyboards and the supplied driver works fine, but I have to balance the MDAIII on something to make it high enough for the IR receiver on the keyboard because the MDAIII IR is on the side.
The pin outs are the same

They are not!!!!!
There is a voltage output from an XDAII when in a call, but the XDA IIs doesn't give the voltage!
Can't remember which pin off the top of my head but I have been testing this and found this to be a major problem when designing a proper car kit for both items!
..Spence
Bit worried about using my incar chrger from my xdaII for my IIs. Does anyone know where I can get a charger or usb sync cheaply for the IIs/pd2k? Expansys are charging £20! There's one here:
http://www.firstphoneshop.co.uk/o2-phone-accessories/o2-imate-pda2k.shtml
But i'm not sure its not just the old II charger...
Hi all,
I see birdog has put piccies up at:

Holux Powered Cradle & GPS receiver for sale

Hello all,
After upgrading to the o2 XDA exec, my much loved Holux Powered cradle and GPS receiver is now redundant
So one of you lucky peeps has the opportunity to buy it off me at a knock down price
I used it with my xda2s - I do NOT know if it works with other xda's.
Here is a link about it:
http://www.totalgps.com/Holux-Powered-GPS-PDA-Mount-for-XDA-Series-I-Mate-Q-Tec-2020.aspx
It powers your xda2s, and is a powered GPS receiver all in one. No more cables all over the place! It's offical name is Holux CR-100.
It's RRP is £90 +p&p.....I would be looking for at least half that. And I believe it is now discontinued (at least it is from totalgps.com).
It is in perfect condition, still with the box and all bits and docs.
HOWEVER!!!!! I had it hard wired to my car.......SO, either hard wire it to yours, or re-attach the cigarette bit, which I still have.
Payment via paypal please......first come first served....
Any questions I'll be happy to answer.
Cheers

Thats the same i want!
But i want it to turn it 90 degrees CW. So i can use it for navigation (looks better then portrait).
but i can't find any holder so far...

I'll try and take a picture later to show you it "sitting" in my old Kaiser mount. If I modified the charger block to not be attached, I'm sure it would fulfil the requirements.
Works landscape and portrait too!

Cool, look forward to seeing it, need a holder asap
Here you go.
3 pictures:
1 showing my old kaiser in the mount, to prove it is indeed a kaiser mount, USB plugged in
1 showing the TP2 in portrait mode, sitting on top of the USB plug
1 showing the TP2 in landscape mode.
It should be noted that there is a bit of wiggle when in landscape mode. This is because the TP2 isn't as thick as the kaiser.
If you could find some way of attaching the USB plug where it should be, then that would help hold it in place.
Also, it's rather embarrasing that my company-supplied, POS, makes-everyone-sound-like-a-dalek Nokia 6300 takes better pictures than my TP2 can
not the best looking but it does the job..............
the cheapest and the most must have if you got a car.

Would the actual car holders have a power cable that connects to a 12V connection? Or would it be likely to have a mini USB to USB there?
What I want to do is to connect my TP2 directly to my Asus R2H while I'm in the car. That saves me another bluetooth connection for syncing.
Take a look at this picture:
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-LTLWPB8F.jpg
Or the last few pictures from this album:
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Album=ZYX7DZAT
The TP2 would then be mounted just below the R2H.

Brodit do passive and active mounts, if you get the passive one you can connect your own mini-USB to USB cable to connect to your Asus. (The active ones have either a cigar lighter plug or a two wire connection for direct wiring into the vehicle)
Gordon
Yes, I saw that. Only downside of a passive holder is that I have to plug the USB cable in every time. But hey: that's what I'm doing now as well
Let's go for the passive one! It's cheaper anyway!
Now i wait for this Brodit.
http://www.brodit.com/images/512021.jpg
I suppose we should not charge the battery in the car anyway, so I avoy it!
That's why I don't consider the active holder... I use a passive and have a car charger just in case of need (very unusual)!
I'm still waiting for my passive holder

Because LiPolymer-Batterys don't like to be charged when they are warm. In a car it can easily be 80+ [°C] and there is the direkt sun onto the phone.
My Brodit Active holder arrived today and I am pleased with it, however I am a bit concerned that when the phone is slid onto the holder the thin guides that slide up between the phone and the keyboard seem to force the two apart more than I think they should be.
Hmmm, I will have to wait and see it it results in a sloppy hinge.
elab
I already have a passive brodit holder with the same "problem"... I already fear for the same thin.... getting it damaged... what do you think?
Could you guys please post some pictures here? I still need to order the holder and your pictures will probably be more clear than the nice marketing pictures from Brodit
here are some pictures of the passive holder:

car charger cable + radio antenna

Hi everybody!
I would like to use my TOPAZ with GPS and TMC in my car, but without charging, the batterylifetime will be very short.
Does anyone know if its possible to get an charging cable witch integrated antenna for cars, or something similar I can modify to do this job.
Maybe I can combine a normal Headset with a charging cable.
thx
I am using this one. Very good to fix and give a good position to view the GPS maps. Besides, recharges battery and has a speaker/mic system so that you don't need to enable the speaker on the phone to receive or make calls.
http://mobile.brando.com.hk/car-handsfree-kit-htc-touch-diamond-2-_p04146c0867d060.html
Haven't found any one with a antenna for either GPS or Cell radio, yet. It seems TD2 won't support external antennas.
Regards,
Roberto.
yeah, i'm looking for such a cable too. but havent found any yet.
cant be so hard to integrate some wire for radio in a charging cable.
i bet a lot of people would like to have it.
update: now i found two accessories which might help.
http://www.amazon.com/HTC-Audio-Cha...17?ie=UTF8&s=wireless&qid=1250514224&sr=1-217
http://www.amazon.de/Diamond-Y-Adap...r_1_28?ie=UTF8&s=ce-de&qid=1250514463&sr=1-28
i think i will check out the first one and hope it works for the antenna too.
Home made cable
It's very simple to make the cable yourself. I have done it and it works perfectly...
What I did is the following:
1) I took the headset from my old Tytn II (or use the new one if you can lose it), and cut it just before the volume control (seen from the phone).
2) I cut open the usb connector, took off all plastic insulation (is some work) and disconnected all cables except for attachment number 7 (see figure), which is the antenna cable (this is the strand of small copper cables without further insulation around it).
3) I took a car charger and cut off the usb connector and soldered the two wires to attachment numbers 1 (red wire) and 5 (black wire).
Be very careful to solder very well, because you don't want any shortcuts...
Voila it's working.
Even better is the following (which I'm going to do now, now I know it's working):
1) Buy the following connector:
http://www.coolcomponents.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=27&products_id=266
2) Solder a simple cable of about 0.7 mm^2 and 75 cm long to port 7 and solder the car charger to ports 1 and 5.
That's it...
Combine this with the following software:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=512630
And you will have TMC available in IGO or other navigation software.
Hope to hear if it works (for me it does). I have TMC now and charging when using my IGO, and besides I can use my bluetooth carkit, because it doesn't think there is a headset connected to the usb!!!
@amraam12: Wich rom and radio rom version you are using? I tried the same, but no luck: when putting +5v on the charing line, the radio gives no signal. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=535358&page=3)
rom
rom: 1.39.114.2 (47382) nld
radio: 3.43.25.19
Antenna only
amraam, in case I just want a better reception provided by an external antenna and don't need to recharge while connected, if I solder an antenna connector to pin 7 (and 5 = GND) in a extUSB connector I'll be able to have much better reception, right?
How about using an antenna like this (http://www.wpsantennas.com/301103-wilson-cellular-magnetic-mount-cell-antenna.aspx) for that? Do you think that may work to improve reception on low signal places?
From your tests, how better is using the external antenna?
Thanks.

That is a TMC (Traffic Message Channel) antenna. It is used to receive info about traffic from a specific FM channel so that GPS can calculate better routes. I don't know exactly if it is connected to pin 7, but probably is. To use that service, it should be available in the place you are driving. I am just guessing, but Pin 7 seems to be only a connection to an antenna for FM frequencies (around +80 ~ 108MHz).
I haven't found anything stating it can also be used to received external GPS or Cell Phone radio external antenna signals. These are all very different frequencies, btw.
Regards.

Is it possible to receive fm stations on td2 while it is connected to this charger?
If so, maybe also tmc data could be received by it without pluging in the headphones.

GPS Reradiator for mobile use

Has anyone tried using this device to enhance the GPS signal while driving? http://www.mobilegpsonline.com/mgpsstore/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=6_97&products_id=125 I'm thinking of drilling a small hole and feeding out a 7" 22awg stranded cable to the outside of the Prime. However, if this device can boost the GPS signals enough, maybe I won't need to.
Definitely a less risk idea than hacking apart the prime.
Could also try a bluetooth gps device as well, but they're more expensive by the looks of things.

Dude, thats all fine, but why bother? For $12 I got a TomTom GPS Mark II Bluetooth Tranceiver at Amazon (Open Box) - works like a charm - though you need one tiny app - "Bluetooth GPS" from the Market. Why re-invent the wheel, or drill holes in the Prime?
http://www.amazon.com/TomTom-Blueto...I2YY/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1329755667&sr=8-3
Right now they have used ones for $5.99 - I think these have been "suddenly" selling like mad since the release of the Prime, LOL! There were LOTS more a month ago!
Edit: Oh, and with the TomTom, it's rechargeable and lasts quite a while on a charge, save that 12v "Unregulated Power Supply" (Cigarette Lighter Socket" to charge the Prime, albeit you need one of these (I also have and have tested):
http://www.amazon.com/NTK-BULLET-CH...1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1329755967&sr=1-1
Not that the Bullet adapter translates to 12v 2a vs. stock chargers 5v - 2a or 15v 1.2a so it charges a bit faster, but not so rapidly that it would be likely to damage the lithium-ion batteries that Asus uses. At least if yo didn't use it full time
I can't tell anything about this one that u have here, but I remember back in 2003-2004 when gps navigators had very poor satellite reception when driving on Manhattan and my friend used similar thing from garmin which worked really well. with it he never lost signal as soon as he turned off gps booster it would completely loose satellites on Manhattan.

If it was me I would not be drilling any hole in my backplate.
If your Prime is not seeing any satellites now or not getting a lock then the GPS Reradiator I don't think is gioing to make any difference.
You would be better off with a BT GPS receiver for around the same price and it would be more portable. http://www.canadagps.com/bluetoothgps.html

I'm a little confused when it comes to the GPS on the Prime. Does the Prime need a data connection to be able to use the GPS? If so, how would you drive around and use the GPS without a connection?

This probably depends on the app. With Google Maps, you can pre-cache areas of a map while you're still connected to the internet. Then when you go out driving, you'll have a map as long as you stay within your cached areas. However, I think if you ask it for directions, it will need a data connection. I guess Google servers do the routing, not the device itself. Also, I think you need a data connection to do turn-by-turn navigation.

It's supposed to have unassisted GPS. That being said out of the box you'd need data for maps (even Google maps needs special tweaking to enable caching)
