GPS on WM6 What I am doing wrong? - Advantage X7500, MDA Ameo ROM Development

Hey all,
I have my athena for a couple of days now but I still can't get the GPS to position. As it is a T-mobile Ameo I used Oprio's Unlocker first. Everything went fine and now I can use it with every SIM. Then I upgraded with the WM6 Dopod U1000 and so far so good. The only thing that worries me is that I can't get the GPS to work. I tried both OziExplorer and Googlemaps, also BeelineGPS and GPSTuner. None of these programs can find a satellite and obtain a position. Am I missing some settings or maybe there are no satelites over my area?

OPp and something else that bothers me. Is the Status Display just not working under WM6 or it's only by me so?

I have the x7500/Advantage and GPS works after updating to WM6. I haven't yet unlocked my phone because i'm waiting for the cooked ROM's to be released before I go through this.
Have you installed maybe some other software that uses GPS and see what happens or are you trying it with just one program?

have you changed the gps settings in start-settings-system-external gps?
I use software-none hardware-5 baud-9600 tick-manage auto.
run quickgps first before you try any of your programmes, and let it update, this will give your progs satellites to look for and speed things up a bit, it does take some time to get a fix.
you haven't tried selecting it as a sirf-star have you? that will stop it working and need the battery leaving out for a while..

yep I tried both COM5 and COM4 with 4800/9600, also ran the QuickGPS.
What do you mean by selecting it as a sirf-star?

some software (for example memory map navigator) gives you the option to select different types of gps receiver protocols, there are a few. garmin, navman, magelan, sirf, nmea,
nmea is what the 7500 uses, but if you select sirf-star then it appears the gps shuts down, and the best way of restoring it at present is to either take the battery out or if you're lucky just hard reset it.
I did this

No, I haven't selected sirf. Is there some simple GPS software just to try whether the integrated GPS is working? Could it be just that there are no satellites over my area?

Come on guys, tell me how you get your GPS to work. Should I go back to WM5 or maybe change the Radio ROM? All the programs I tried still can't find any satellites? Any suggestions for other settings?

I don't have an answer for you, but I can tell you that the GPS satellite system covers the whole planet, so there are some over your area. Sounds like it could be a hardware problem.

Hmm I know but althoufh I am in the city centre it shout find at least 1-2 satellites. Maybe I should go somewhere out of the city and try there. I still doubt that there's something wrong with the settings or the software.

i had the same problem, using AMEO, unlocked using olipro unlocker.. GPS never worked afterwords .. the SIRFbootloader section in the ROM isn't updatable getting a communication error and that is it. I've to return it to T-mobile.. don't know how to remove the Olipro bootloader and how i can get back the original T-mobile rom!
Hope your problem is fixable .. as mine isn't

I did upgrade to Olipro, but I have bever seen any communcation errors. As far as I can tell, every upgrade went fine. My GPS works in 2% of the cases, it takes forever to get a fix, and after even the slightest displacement or move, the fix is gone again.

I am not getting any communications errors. I did all all the settungs as shown on this site http://www.x7501.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1184315093/0
and f.e on Google maps it just shows "Seeking GOS satellites (0)"
On the BeelineGPS I get "Fix not available" and a red circle blinks.
I really don't know what to try more. Maybe should I flash another Radio ROM or get back to WM 5.0? Any other suggestions?

mine too after upgrading to WM6, my quickGPS is not able to download the satellite data via Activesync. i used to be able to do so on WM5... whats wrong?

try this!!
Unplug battery then plug it again, this will help your mobile like factory reset !
lucky

For tests I am using old small app which was fro PPC2003. It works fine with my Advantage X7500 on Com4 and 4800 baud rate in WM6. It usualy starts showing satelites after 1 minute or so.
I have attached it here.
Edit:
I never tried to use quickGPS via ActiveSync. I use vsta. However it works fine and downloads GPS inf via WLAN/GPRS/UMTS or what is actualy available.

Did you do step 2 and three of Olipro Unlock
Step 2 Sends A Radio Rom to Unlock and step 3 a Rom tha make your GPS work again
It says so in the Olipro Unlock Documentation

Radio Rom 1.35

Sorry if this is a dumb Question but I have not been able to find a true answer.
What is the advantage of updating My Radio Rom from 1.20 to either 1.27 or 1.35 or should I leave well enough alone.
Its up to you, the 1.35.00.11 version of the radio has the GPS chip enabled, but as you will see in the GPS thread the GPS chip works but has no antenna. The radio should be more stable, and i noticed an increase in the range of my 3G area with it. Make sure to use the version available here (at the top) because they push "des SSPL" to the phone so you dont need to worry about which bootloader or CID you have (not that it matters about CID with radio upgrades...but you know what i mean )
Thanks, i'll probably upgrade to 1.35 using the link you provided
Just upgraded, very straightforward.
One slight issue. After upgrade and soft reset I could not make a data connection.
I made a voice call just to check that was working . . .
then all was OK.
Don't know if the voice call sorted it or what
just make sure you have GPS off or your battery will be in for a ride

Hi,
I also flashed 1.35 nice and easy. So where can you turn GPS off ?
Thanks for the help

Don't worry, GPS isn't enabled unless you install the VRSerial driver (which aint easy....). Even then, it's only turned on when an application specifically opens the GPS comm port.

Hi Sleuth255,
thanks for the help on this issue. I do not indent to install VRSerial. I do have an external GPS mouse which is fine for me.

I recently upgraded and it was a major improvement for me. Far fewer dropped calls, better reception, etc.
I have noticed a noticeable decrease in in-call volume...is this an issue with this rom? At max volume, I have trouble hearing in a noisey environment...never had this problem before.
RUU_1.35.00.11_radio_only.exe wants to connect to the internet?
I upgraded my radio rom yesterday and kept the installation file, RUU_1.35.00.11_radio_only.exe, on my laptop. I downloaded the file with the link supplied in the wiki page.
Now today I get a warning from my f-secure saying that the exe file “RUU_1.35.00.11_radio_only.exe” wants to connect to the internet. I clicked deny and it kept trying to connect four more times then it stopped. I scanned the file for viruses and Trojans but F-Secure didn’t find any.
Anyone else had the same problem or perhaps knows whats going on?

its probably thinking that access to the ActiveSync device (which as far as i am aware is via tcp over usb) i wouldnt worry about it. disconnect from the internet if you are.

If the phone won't start, after flashing radio 1.35, simply reflash the SO.

Did you upgrade from 1.34.00.10 or a lower version radio ?
Would like to know if there is any "real" advantage to upgrade from 1.34.00.10 to 1.35.00.11 ?
I am experiencing some missed calls due to the always GPRS / 3G connection I am running for emoze push mail.

GPS Hell

I've read just about every GPS related post on this board, and I haven't found a solution.
I've got a Verizon XV6800 with DCD 3.2.3 (also tried 3.2.2) Radio version 3.42.30 (also tried 3.39.10 and 3.42.02) with Bootloader 2.47 (also tried 2.40). I've done the titan GPS fix. I have never gotten a GPS lock on even one satellite! I've tried this in the middle of a parking lot on a clear day while standing outside my car for 30 minutes.
I'm looking at GPSViewer (holux) and it sometimes shows satellites (not locked; in red) but after about a minute that disappears and I get nothing. The Satellite's always show over the N on the "GPS Status" page. GoogleMaps never shows a satellite only "Searching for Satellites (0)..."
Now I've just noticed that I'm indoors (in the middle of a building) and GPSViewer still occasionally shows a satellite (in red) and then it disappears.
I've tried the *228,2 and the *22899, I've flashed the radio rom with bootloader 2.40 and 2.47.
Can anyone think of anything else to try? Is it just me?
Thanks in advance.

is Location set to 'On'?
External GPS Settings to COM 4 and Baud 4800?
GPS Settings correct in Google Maps?
Sorry, my mistake for not mentioning that.
Yes, Location is on. And Com4, 4800.
Googlemaps is setup to use the Windows GPS (Start->programs->External GPS)
are you positive you did the GPS fix correctly? if you open that port in QPST again and read from phone, are call the gpsOne settings as they were when you applied the fix?
Yep, all nine boxes are checked and when I closed the QPST and opened again, did the re-read and sure enough all 9 boxes are still checked.

reflash dcd 2.3.3.
install carrier cab
reflash radio
check all settings

theres no reason why that shouldnt work for you. if it doesnt, then there is a hardware issue.
something else you may wanna try is using COM 5 instead of 4. its a long shot, but on my first 6800 the GPS was on COM 5 for some reason.
First, did you follow this link here to the letter?
If so, did you try using HTC GPS tool like GC states here?
Com4/baud rate 4800/Clear Memory
Click Open, then click Nav. Init.
Then you need to wait for three or more red bars, then open the GPS program of your choice.
121, I attached the tool for you as well.
I did not try the HTC GPS tool, but the link you gave me goes to like 261 posts. I've read through most of them before, and followed #1 (I didn't download the third tool, the launcher, because I'm trying to use Google Maps, not TomTom).
Just tried the GPS tool and it doesn't seem to do much better. I see satellites for a little while but they don't lock.

Did you follow my instructions on how to lock with QuickGPS and GPS Tool?
My phone's acting very similar the sat's will be red and it'll take up to 30 mins to get a lock. The htc gps tool made it a lock a couple minutes faster but live search would take forever to start with gps tool running. taking 20 mins to lock makes it almost worthless. You should reflash and leave it running in your car or something for a hour and maybe you'll get a lock.
Hmm maybe I should make a youtube video of exactly what I do...because I'm noticing no issues.
I did try your instructions. Got two half full red bars, then they disappeared, never to return. The Information screen never populated with GPS location info and stayed in Mode 2, No position information for the whole time.
I will try shield's recommendation.
where are you located?
I'm still getting used to using mine but I'm wondering if the differences users see are the individual phones or the locations they are using them in. I bought a VX6800 a few weeks back and discovered these forums about a week later. I flashed my phone this past weekend (Olipro 2.40, Radio 3.42.30, and DCD 3.2.3). I then installed HTC GPS tool and Tom Tom 7 to start my experimenting.
My first test was HTC GPS tool in my back yard. It started picking up satellites after about a minute..then did red bars...then green bars..maybe two minutes total. I closed the tool and launched Tom Tom and it had satellites and was ready to go in about a minute.
Yesterday I launched Tom Tom in my driveway (front of the house ) before I left for work and it had a lock in the time it took me to enter in a POI for the train station. It guided me to the station and displayed accurate location and vehicle speed the whole way there.
When I got back to the station after work I launched Tom Tom to test it again on the way home. I waited a minute and it didn't lock so I started driving. I got halfway home with no lock so I closed Tom Tom and launched HTC GPS tool. It locked after a while and I launched Tom Tom which was then ready to go for the last leg of the trip.
This morning when I got in the car I launched Tom Tom directly again and it had a lock before I put in my POI, just like yesterday. I'm going to try again when I get back to the train station tonight.
I haven't reset or turned off my phone since I finished all of the flashing and installing this weekend. I'm curious if the GPS remembers the last satellites it saw or if I just have easy locking in front of my house and crappy signal down at the train station. As I get more into this I'll look into QuickGPS. I've also seen at least two threads mentioning reflashing the radio after flashing the ROM and setting up the carrier...I'm wondering if this helps as well and may give it a shot next weekend as I continue tinkering.

you should just soft reset your phone. more than likely the COM port is just locked up and needs to be released before it will work again. you should prime TT7 with GPS Tool or Google Maps to save yourself time. don't worry about any reflashing yet it sounds like you have everything already running correctly. just soft reset and try to lock with GPS Tool or another primer. when you close out any GPS apps, make sure you turn off the gps in the application then close it properly to help keep the COM port open. if you put your phone in standby while a GPS app is running or close the app with GPS still running, it could lock it up which needs a soft reset.
I use GC process and found it works for me. But as a Sys Tech Engineer I have found identical equipment does not all behave the same...
I do the GPS Tool, wait for 3-bars, Goolge maps, etc...and I get a lock. HOWEVER, I do a bit more. Seeing that this is Windows crappy OS I start with a full power down & up each day. Then I do the quick GPS to get updated GPS info (make sure you have a data connection going...ie open Explorer first then close it). Then I follow GC step exactly in another post as I stated above...connect. Sometimes it is about a minute or less but no more than 3-4.
Now I am very confident this works as GC tells us with the newest rom & radio. I am on rom 3.22 radio 3.42.30... I found for ME...I said ME and my area radio 3.39 (I downgraded to this one recently) gave me better results although his newer radio IS MUCH better than 3.39...as I stated before all devices look identical but they do not all behave the same..
The very last time I used it (this morning) I had almost instant lock with no primining; just launching Tom Tom. I'm not trying to troubleshoot anything at this point just experimenting and comparing experiences. If I don't get a quick lock when I get back to the train station tonight I will probably set it up to follow gc14's method tomorrow night and compare the results.
I don't know if I'll wind up adding anything valuable to this thread or not but when I'm looking to do this stuff for the first time I like to read as many details about other people's experiences as I can. I have a feeling in the long run I'll wind up using gc14's method as long as I get the same results.
Brooklyn, NY (NYC)
This is what I do to get a lock:
* Soft reset
* Connect to Internet
* Update QuickGPS
* Run HTC GPS Tool (Open port)
I do that or I never get a lock.
I have an XV6800, DCD 3.2.3, radio 3.42.30, and no priming software. I use google maps alone and get a lock usually within a minute.
I helped set up a friends XV6800 the same way, using the identical files (ROM, Radio, carrier cab, etc...) and he has the worst lock times. He can go days without ever succeeding in locking sattelites using google maps.
I would be willing to bet the devices are from different production runs and have one atom off in the chipset somewhere and that is the difference.
Thats totally a rant on my part, I doubt that is the actual case, but I notice occaisionally activesync pops up and stops my GPS from working. As soon as I close active sync and go to google maps and uncheck "use gps" and check it again it starts working again. I am probably crazy but so far that seems to be the only thing stopping my device from locking gps when active.
I am not very smart, but if the same files do not work on the same type, brand, etc.. phone then i would have to say that it must be some kind of small hardware issue.

COULD MODs CARE ABOUT GPS error here - a long time has fixed for many guys

Hi Mods!
I really sorry that I have to open new thread, because I and some others also posted here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=405016&page=4
but it seems that no one can solve that problem correctly. And MODs seems that don't know about that problem.
So, could MODs give us some ideas and solutions.
For example: I used Original ROM, GPS with TT7 was OK.
But when I change to another ROM (any other ROM), it was so good that everything works well but not GPS.
Hope to hear from u soon.
Thank you.

You do know about the problem with validating maps for a new installation of TT7 ?
Do a google for this in xda -devs.
i used this TT7 on Kaiser and it worked like a champ.
and from your instruction, I also sink to another sea that the need information is somewhere but could not find out.
could u pls give me a better ideas. pls don't tell me that: google something in somewhere.
I spent so much time to discuss and post somewhere else.
thanks
Clarify.
Please explain the type of gps problems your having, Problems with getting fixes? Problems with tomtom?
I need yr help
thanks friend
My problem is here.
When I bought x7501, I installed TT7.45 with Map of North America. It work fast and better than Kaiser I had.
Then I tried to Up ROM to SPL 3.5 (every ROM for 3.5) and I could not use GPS. TT7 work but it only show the working screen with: Waiting for valid GPS signal... forever. And when I find the GPS position, it says: Poor signal.
I tried to change Radio version but failed.
I also tried to convert back to SPL 1.2 now and working with Official ROM 6.0 (but with SPL 1.2 Oliprof). I tried to change Radio version, from 1.47 to 1.57 to 1.58 but failed. So strange (because I had to format the drive when I convert back from SPL 3.5 to SPL 1.2 so I lost my backup file for SPL 1.2 for original ROM).
Now I can not receive GPS signal.
I also try to install GPS Proxy, but this program doesnt run in my Athena, it says: Negative exception and quit.
I aslo try to change th port for GPS to another COM port, but it will not turn on GPS device.
In my Athena, the default COM port for GPS is COM4.
So, that's my problem.
Could you help me with detail instruction.
So thanks and wait for your help
try
you can try going to

*
soft reset device
*
load visualgps, click agree, click edit, settings, set port to com4,baud 9600,click ok
*
hold device by window or go outside
*
Wait for grey signal bars to go blue then your set
*
load up ttn, click where u see signal bars in lower right, then agn on right above version number, configure gps to use other nmea, set com port 4,baud 9600
*
it should instantly have fix!
thanks friend
i hope it will work
i try it now then tell u later
but do u mean that it works for AP 4 only? or another rom?
What Radio do you have installed
i am confused because your sig says you have radio 1.57 but you say in your post above that you couldn't upgrade from radio 1.47.
AP4 needs at least radio 1.50 according to here http://www.htc-hackers.com/uploads/AP4_How_To_1.8.pdf

Steps are optimal for michy roms,ap4 gps should be blistering fast "out the box"! When I used ap4 I was using radio 1.57,and even indoors I had gps fixes in 30 secs after soft resetting.
As of now I use radio 1.58 for hsupa on michy 6.1 rom and have fairly good gps.The steps above emulate my settings with exception of rom.
GOOD NEWS - GPS is working like a rabbit
Hi friends
Firstly, so thanks to all of my new friends, who were trying to reply and show me the way to solve the problems.
Secondly, I want to give u the good news. Now GPS is working as a champ.
But it is a little bit difference with some guides from u.
- I follow the steps above and change the baudrate to 9600, but after reset, it comes back to 4800 as default.
- The COMPORT for program is COM 4. For the hardware, I set default is NONE.
- Then, I install VisualGPS.BeeLineGPS.v1.83.Build.125 and reset. After that I run Visual GPS Beeline first, it works after 20 seconds and lock my location when I stay in my car (The weather now is -1 celcius degree outside - very cold).
- Then I run TOMTOM, I choose BUILT IN GPS (but not other NMEA). And TOMTOM works perfectly after 10 seconds - I did that because I remember that I always chose BUILT IN GPS when I used TT7 with this one two weeks ago.
And here are some tests after that:
- I turn on Wifi, open DATA connection (that is a issue when I use Kaiser, if Data connection is opening, TT7 can not receive the signal), then open TT7 (without openning the VISUAL GPS), it works after 12 seconds.
- I come into my room (the second floor in a three floors house) and turn on TT7 without using any other software, it lock after 10 seconds with average 5-8 sats.
WOW. It can't be better.
But I still don't know which one help which one. Because, when I installed TT7, then I run it for the first time yesterday, it said: could not run because of the memory available.
Then I try to run GoogleMap (even if I did not connect to Wifi - so ofcourse GoogleMap only turned on but did not run with data), then I tried to open TT7 again and it run (confuse here, who can explain to me)
The problem only now is.... WIFI. I hope can fix it soon as the instructions from CMONEX.
Thanks friends.
slight correction
just a minor correction to guide after you stating baud rate returning to 4800, in external gps settings on hardware tab to change baud I notice you need to set hardware com port to com 5 first then setting baud to 9600 ,then click ok to save.Go back in external gps settings and back to hardware tab ,as you will notice settings saved but now this time select none in hardware port and leave baud at 9600 then hit ok.
As I remember in ap4 4800 baud was default and worked best with that rom anyway, and so far it works for you.I do recommend setting use other nmea in tomtom input your baud and software com port settings from external gps control panel because you used visualgps to boot up your gps to get sat fixes for tomtom, with these settings you dont have to use visualgps to warm it up.Make sure you update your quickgps evrey 2 days then soft reset and hold phone by window or go outside when you use gps with new emphemeris file from quickgps as it can take a lil bit longer to regain track ironically ,but once you get fix itll be super quick no matter where you are, even if you soft reset. The only time you need to have clear view of sky again to get sat fix is if you turn off device completely for an hour or 2, or update quickgps data agn in 2 days (up to full 3 sometimes) or flash a new rom :>.
For wifi,I dont kno how to fix, cmonex prob has to send you a special file to regain mac address so wifi can work even after spl changes.

Alltel GPS Help Thread

I think I am having the same problem as everyone else with the Alltel TP GPS. I have absolutely no luck finding satellites in my hometown, yet if I travel out of my hometown I can get signal 99% of the time. I tried locking in while I was driving back from work (Ocala, FL) to my hometown (Sarasota, FL) and it worked all the way to my house. As soon as I turned I turned Google Maps off it couldn't find me anymore.
I have tried all the tricks to make it work including the obvious "turn on my location".
If anyone have a solution that works please let me know. I have heard that if you use the Alltel Nav program then the GPS picks up very well, so there must be something there.
can anyone help?
if you are running stock rom its a little finniky at GPS but if your running a custom rom then its a lot better... also the stock radio seems to be little strange...
if your not running stock what are you running?
do you have quick gps installed?
I am using the stock rom. I am not familiar with other ROMs, I haven't looked into that aspect of it yet. What is the best ROM for an Alltel phone (IYO)? Do the other roms still use TouchFLO? Am a very graphic person, so I like the prettyness of TF3D.
i had problems getting a satellite lock in my home town when i had my 6800 with my tp its much better i am running energy rom found here over at ppcgeeks http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=69545. i really think it just has to do with the area/amount of towers. there has been some discussion about needing gps services turned on on alltels side. Saying that if you sign up for there navigation service they will open up gps and then cancel service(i have never used their service and get gps). It sometimes would take awhile for me to get a lock and then only pick up one or two satelites then out of area i would pick up a bunch. have u tried htc gps tool? also check out visual gpsce. try all different radios too. im curently running the vzw rapael radio found here http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=46616. once you flash over your alltel radio u will not be able to flash it back stock since the alltel radio has not been dumped yet (something i was not aware of when i flashed). im going to bet though if you unlock your phone and flash a custom rom your gps lock will be better. good luck!
I installed ConFlippers Rom for the Alltel TPs and I like it a lot, but it didn't do anything to help my GPS lock.
Changing doesn't always helps. Conflippers is a great rom because its exclusive for alltel and is very easy to flash because everything works. With conflippers you need to install "htc gps tool". Then once you have it do the following: select "clear memory" ->open for 15 sec.->close->select "cold or warm start" ->open 10 sec.->check nav init.->check your satellites. If you got green then go to google maps or whatever program you are trying to use gps for.
If you would like to try a different rom then sometimes simply cycling the location setting from on to off then back on again or soft reset is in order. Keep your quick gps up to date.
There is not one fix for all gps problems for the t-Pro. You will find a routine that works and it will no longer be a problem. One thing that works 100 percent of the time is with the stock rom, paying for alltel nav will give you locks instantly in any program at anytime.
I'm using Nfsfan's CDMA Touch Pro Rom
I install the Alltel Carrier Cab and MMS cab in my faq
when I flash it to make it work 100% with Alltel.
(mms=Picture/vid messaging)
The link to my faq is in my signature.
Also, in post one of my signature there is a link to a post I've made
describing what's vga compatible and what's not
till I finish getting everything for my TouchPro Faq.

Thanks for the help, I am still lost tho. I tried to do what you said but when I clicked on "nav. init." it said "please open com port first.."
Could you please walk me thru a little further I'm kinda slow

Well, I've had my Alltel Touch Pro for about 6 hours now, so I'm hardly an expert (coming from my eternally flashed and reflashed PPC-6800) but, here's my experience with GPS:
Bought the Touch Pro from the Alltel corporate owned store. Walked outside to my car and got in. Went into the phone settings and turned Location On. Popped my Garmin Mobile XT (bought retail, not cracked) card out of my 6800 and into my Touch Pro. Let it install. Started up Garmin Mobile XT, got on the highway, and within a minute had a nice GPS lock.
Obviously, all on the stock Alltel ROM (no time to look into custom ROMs yet, I've only had it for a few hours!) So I can state that at least in my case the GPS worked fine out of the box without any sort of priming or tweaking. YMMV.
Yea, like I said mine works great everywhere I have been except for my hometown. I can even hook up to my bluetooth GPS receiver and it works great everywhere. Just can't seem to get a connection in (Sarasota, FL).

[Q]Stable work of GPS driver(service)

Hi.
I have got observations from differtent roms ( not anly my roms and with different radios - even last 321 ) that very rarely ( I noticed only once per one tested rom but my tests were too short ) something wrong happens with GPS service. None program gets any data from GPS port. Changing managed port in this case gives nothing. Programs simply do not get any NMEA data.
Maybe return of GPS service from sleep mode is not always correct ?
As I remember some people had similar problems and they had to restart WM.
I detected is is not necessary because it is enough to restart GPS service and all start to work perfect. That is why in my new rom updates ( not in UPDATE3 ) I will include small utility for GPS restart.
Have anybody similar observations ?

Good idea, we have all noticed that a soft reset is necessary to get back gps functionality, so a utility that would do it for us would be great, its a bane of using the TG01, if possible could you make this utility available to all?

Seconded Even after spending some time looking at the AGPS dimension, I've not been completely convinced that there wasn't something else happening - if it can be better controlled by a service management applet, that would be a very useful advance. Would also much appreciate if can be made available (or appropriate advice on config).
Best regards,
Kevin

Yes, I can share it with all users but it will be difficult to prove it really works ( You have only my word ) unless someone has found a way to "force" GPS service to stop working good. Usage is very simple. After You start it You get message "GPS service restared".
That is all.

Hi everyone, I use the latest version of GPSMod on my TG01 and I have no GPS problems whatsoever.
I am currently using MiROM1_rel5 with 1800 radio and all is fine, even before using this rom (apart from when I tried radio 321) I have never had any issues with the GPS after I started using GPSMod.
I use IGO with my TG01 and you will probably know from other threads that this is probably the worst package to get working on the TG01 but I don’t have any GPS issues at all.
Use the latest version (3_4_2) and keep everything at the default settings and it configures COM2 as the 'new' GPS port and I use this in my SYS.TXT
[GPS]
port="2"
baud_rate="4800"
I have just come back from Italy and when I turned on my TG01 outside Nice airport and I got a lock in less than 2mins and using my TG01 in and around Italy no issues and when I returned back to good old UK it took a couple of mins to get the first fix but its been fine.

Hi.
We do not say about any regular GPS failure but about very rare cases.
Nobody knows when it happens so it can concerns Your solution too.
It would be desirable that users who met this problem, tell us what GPS drivers/software they used when it happened.

Igo varients normally lose signal or find sats, then lose signal, radio 0321 improves things a lot for me, but still... GPS signal lost is a common problem, and it never really recovers until a soft reset.

Could You describe it more ?
Do You know whether and how to cause such "unrecoverable" situation so that to get 100% prove my "GPS restarter" really could help ?

I can probably prove this using GPSTest on my current radio, if not IGO will do it

Ok. I will try to upload my utility maybe today evening or tomorrow.
Do what You can to "damage" GPS and apply restarter.
Here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12492189&postcount=1
my utility.
Remember to stop all navigation software before execution of this utility.

Its easy to damage GPS, start a gps app, then exit it, gps no longer works till you restart the device, thats how its always worked for me, anyway, after trying your app, still have the same problem. I am sure others can also test for you.

Hmm, I guess it must be other kind of problem. I have never had a situation when navigation software "kills" GPS ( Ozi Explorer and Garmin Mobile XT ). It was rather after return tg01 from sleep or something other.
1) Do You utilize "standard" GPS driver from any official ROM ?
2) Do You use managed port ( which ) or hardware port ?
3) It happens only with IGO software or any other You execute ?
I have created some simple "terminal" software for PNA devices so maybe we could do some kind of diagnostic.
P.S. As a matter of fact my utility restarts "managed port service" not real gps driver. I can see I have to modify my utility for You. I will restart both: GPS driver and gps service. Maybe it will help.

Glad you figured out the problem, i wasn't suggesting that your utility definately didn't work, but i used some simple gps tests, IGO, wait for it to find some sats, then exit, after exit, no gps programs can work again till soft reset, same with the simple GPStest 1.04, i think if your utility restarts both, you will have a very robust little utility.

You can "kill" GPS too simply. Maybe problem is rom dependent or mentioned
applications bahaves in wrong way. Any other users of the same rom report this problem ?
Could You give me any link to download GPStest 1.04 and write some explanations how You used to utilize it ? Just simple steps to "kill" GPS.
It seems to be simple application so I can test what happens .

You can download GPS Test here
Its very simple application, it scans com ports for gps, then just tests how many sats can be found, very very siimple, but very useful for testing whether you can get a lock or not.
So, run gps test, scan for ports, wait for a lock, then exit program, then restart, see if it works again, for me it would not, this may also be dependant on radio, i am currently using mirom8 with radio 0300
I know it doesn't fix the problem but with GpsMod I can start IGo, exit then open Google maps (which is also set to COM2) then exit, then open something like PUTTY and use COM2 then exit and go back to IGo all without having to soft reset and every application working.
It would be great if we could get the gps to work as good an htc gps but for those having problems with the gps then GpsMod is the answer.

I think it is rom/gps driver dependent. I tested GPS via GpsTest. Works perfect.
To catch first 3d fix my tg01 needed a little time. It is obvious.
Then I exited and started GpsTest few times. Every time after start, it showed immediately 3d fix and at least 5-6 sattelites.
P.S. I always utilize COM4 managed port.

OK, it must be IGO, what would be useful then, is if the uitility had a mortscript or batch type ability, say you go to run a GPS utility or a GPS navigation application, your utility restarts gps driver and service, then runs program, then does a driver/service restart upon exit. I think its IGO that takes over the port, obviously other people may not have this problem, but i have noticed it on many roms.

What my utility potentially can do , You can do manualy so we will know whether it will help. So when You "kill" gps , do as follows:
1) Execute fdcTaskmanager.
2) Go to services
3) Stop gps service
4) Go to devices
5) Stop gps driver
6) Start gps driver
7) Go to services
8) Start gps service
9) Exit fdcTaskManager
If now IGO or other software will show satelites, modification of my utility have sense to fix Your problems.
