MortButtons 2.5 - Windows Mobile Apps and Games

MortButtons is around since about 4 years, but since there's quite some hype recently about both "touch-able" menu systems like Spb Menu or TouchCube and "click-through" button enhancers like HButton, maybe MortButtons might be interesting for some people, too.
It offers all required ways to launch a menu entry (press app button multiple times and wait for timeout, direction pad, tapping the entry), allows freely configurable items for up to 5 main menus (any number of entries and sub menus; don't believe old sites telling about an entry limit, it doesn't exist since years...), includes a task list (like Alt-Tab), offers many "special" entries (system settings, new documents, calls, new messages, screen rotation, ...), is skinnable, free (though donations would be nice), ...
V2.5 compared to V2.41 mostly adds some "facelifts" (new icons and skins, alpha channel support, images as icons for entries, user defined backgrounds, ...) and better performance, but also some new features like finger gestures and access to the system settings.
More informations, download, manual, etc. is available here.
(Screenshot shows TransAqua1 (new default) skin with Spb's Snowy theme as background, icons are "GlassIcons" .png images available in Rotlaus' forum intended for rlToday).

Wow, Thank you so much for such a wonderful software. I just started using Mortbuttons just a few weeks ago and like it very much.
I have made a skin that goes well with the Touch look and would like to share it.

Yeah, it's only a pity it's still some kind of insider tip while around for years, while similar concepts realized in the last few months make such a fuzz...

Thanks. Btw, it's also possible to create a skin with bigger tiles like the original TouchCube style. You can use any size for the menu entries you like, as long as MortButtons manages to fit at least one entry on the screen...

Nice Mort! I'll try it and give you some feedback
By the way, can I include this on a ROM ?

Thanks for great work, I was using previous version and this is even better. Keep it this way.

Just updated my skin to take advantage of the alpha layer.
Thanks again Mort for all your wonderful stuff.

Excellent application. Thanks a lot for the hardwork.

Nice one, tough the alpha layer isn't very obvious.
Little hint: Zip only the folder contents itself (i.e. no subfolder in the archive), then change the file extension from .zip to .mbz. Having to copy only a single file makes skin installation a bit more easy for beginners. And it saves some space, though usually more by better cluster usage than by compression (most images already are compressed...).

You're welcome...

Very nice update, the launch time seems to be much less. There does seem to be a bit of a memory leak? But not sure how to pinpoint if its cuz of MortButtons or something else. Nevertheless, it is a very nice, free, and actually more powerful alternative to other touch/launcher kinda applications.
Also a fan of MortScript (for small, useful tasks) and MortPlayer (THE audio player for winmobile ). Do you have a smartphone version of MortPlayer planned?

VGA & icons pixelization
Hi,
I just tried on my VGA PDA (Dell Axim X51v), and application icons which are VGA-enabled, appear pixelized in MortButton. Any idea on what I did wrong?

Great work Mort. I've been using mort buttons since about the day after I got my vario II 16 months ago. It was the ideal solution to the missing capabilities I had always presumed a touch screen device would come with by default!
I much prefer it to all of these today screen launchers as these seem to slow down the phone and generally use smaller, less usable buttons for my sausage fingers!
One thing I've noticed though, the new built in shortcuts to the control panel options don't seem quite right. e.g. I've added a shortcut to the Memory control panel on a menu. Having launched the Memory panel, the only way to close it is by pressing the 'ok' button on the top right of the screen - neither OK button works....
Alternatively, if I add a .lnk shortcut which starts the memory panel (with the shortcut "Settings>System>Memory>Main = 20#ctlpnl cplmain.cpl,4") the panel launches fine and can be closed with the OK buttons no problem.
The same goes for Input, Phone, Today panel shortcuts...
I was wondering if MortButtons is not closing properly after launching these settings links?
Apart from this quibble, a great update. Keep up the good work - I'd have binned this phone long ago if it wasn't for this App!!

MortButton and FTouchFlo
Thanks Mort for a great app. I was wondering what is the command line to launch each of the buttons. I was trying to use this in conjunction with efrost's FTouchFlo app where I assigned a gesture like leftright app to launch button 1 by putting the path "\Program Files\MortButtons\Button1.mbi" but that did not launch button1 when gesturing. Would you happen to have a solution?

I experienced the same. But if you link to the 'Button.exe'. It will bring you to the main menu where you can see the 5 buttons. While this is one more step extra, better than nothing.

^ What you guys are trying to do works fine here.
For e.g. go to \Windows\Start Menu\Programs\MortButtons and see how the shortcut for button 1 is created (if you have a good file explorer such as gsfinder you can see the shortcut as well as the command line parameter).
Basically the shortcut should point to \Program Files\MortButtons\MBRunner.exe and the command line parameter should be \Program Files\MortButtons\<path_to_button>.mbi. Both of these paths should be put in Ftouchflo config without quotation marks around. This makes for a much faster, customizable and full featured launcher than the cubes.

Thanks. That did the trick!

Once again for dummies. You mean:
LeftRightApp:\Program Files\MortButtons\MBRunner.exe
LeftRightAppCmdLine:\Program Files\MortButtons\Program Files\MortButtons\Button3.mbi?
I tried:
LeftRightApp:\Program Files\MortButtons\MBRunner.exe
LeftRightAppCmdLine:\Program Files\MortButtons\Button3.mbi
but it didn't work, it shows an empty "MortButton" window.

Maybe you need to use quotes around the parameter (i.e. mbi file). Otherwise it might be MortButtons tries to load "\Program" as menu informations, which doesn't quite work...

The exact method that you've listed works for me. Are you using the latest version of ftouchflo? I remember one of the versions had a bug in the leftright swipe..

Where can I find soft-reset function and it's Icon so that I can put it on the Mortbutton. Annoying each time wanna do soft reset have to tuck the stylus in the hole.

Necessary Programs & Tweaks for Our Prophet

We have many ROM for our Prophet. The problem is, we saw some of these programs available in some ROM and not in the other ROM. So, let we share these programs, tweaks and tips.
Dutty Explorer
I am starting with Dutty Explorer, based on GSFinder+, a very good replacement to default File Explorer (even with extensions like Spb Plus and HouMing File Explore Extension), plus latest version of gsgetfile.dll compatible with WM6.
We have Resco Explorer but not Freeware. Total Commander CE is good, but not the interface.

SQPC is a program (MULTI-PURPOSE TOP MENU BAR) that as old as my age.....
But, flexible that you can alter it anyway you like, the main reason why I had it kept as personally I love that one tap finish actions too much, like copy, paste, input selector, soft-keyboard pop up.........
Goodness:-
1. SWAPPABLE TOP BAR with any Length / Programmable / Executable Icon you like,
2. Clipboard 10 history too easy to use ( very very good for my study use),
3. Clock and Calendar on the screen is plug-ins,
4. left side program shortcuts,
5. any back ground images, automatic rotate selectable,
6. single tap actions for any programs / files....
7. Less than 300 KB in file size........
Weakness:-
1. Too many functions for juniors, ( for me, just a junior user, I had explored its 50% of features only.... there are more advance feartures like to call out parameters......)
2. UI is not too fancy~~~
I would like to share the .ini file of it so everyone can give it a try.
PLEASE BE SURE THAT YOU HAD THE SQPC.rar.zip changed to SQPC.rar before unzip.
Thanks for all of yours attention. Please correct me if I am wrong !

thanks for your work,it is so great.
I wish I can config the favour link myself. would you please tell me how to change it ?
Thanks for the new version. No errors here, BUT I can't figure out how to make the program icons show on the list. Only a couple of them are shown, like Notes, Tasks, etc. Am I supposed to drop an icon .png file for every app in the icons folder? Otherwise, everything is working great and it is a lot faster. Thanks,
First of all I wanna thank you for such a wonderful application! Congratulation Works rellay nice!
But when I try to start the Control Panel, nothing happens . It is linked with \Windows\ControlPanel.exe, but for this file does't exist. Is there any other way to access the Control Panel?
very nice!
i have also the crash on the third icon und Control Panel doesn't launch
goob job man congratulation!!!!!!!!................thanks
third icon
First off GREAT app !! love it . But for some reason when i go to the third icon it doesn't show me what app's are running , all i get is an error message telling me to quit then restart or look at details . Just wondering if your working on that ? And again awsome app
Fingerpoint 2 is awesome. Very quick. Had some issues when first loading it, got an error, more of a windows mobile error. Changed the settings.xml to include the vga version and did a soft reset. Works perfectly.
VERY SMOOTH when scrolling...just need to figure out how to add more icons and change some of the captions.
I'll keep an eye out for a config tool if one ever comes out.
Thanks again!!!

marco - the third button for me works...it shows what apps are running. Using it on a Touch Pro (Sprint - Stock)
It`s not goinig on a geman rom. We have programme and not programs. If have always errors.

I have been waiting for this all week.
Can you add this to ApptoDate
Support VGA - is certainly superior. Looks fine.
But:
- Caches to the disgusting low-speed
- Periodically, not responding to scroll right
- Need an embedded controller programming, as well as to close the application
Hy,
great to have a new version before i go on vacation
But i have to say a quick check brought some issues i have with it.
1. I have to say, and that is just honesty and mend to be constructive critique, i don’t like your way of grouping the fav`s. I don't have a clue about programming and so i can't cry out to loud here but i would have made an option for the fav grouping to be foldable, meaning a Group would have a line like program has now, and only when i want to look into that group i can slide it and the group opens up. Ok, i know that is 2 slides for one program, but when you sort your favs cleverly ( oh man i sound like a smartass here) you almost eliminate scrolling... oh man that mend to be the coolest feature of Fingerpoint ... ok, but i think you get my idea.
2.the new xml-setting file is cool and (also some asked already how to do it) is pretty self-explanatory. Just open the settings.xml in editor and you will see people that it isn’t rocket science we are speaking of here. But nonetheless it is work that needs to be done, and i think a tap&hold menu with "copy to fav-group xyz" would do the job easier . Especially when there is this "program-that-you-barley-ever-need,-but-on-this-very-fair-it-has-to-come-out-of-the-closet-once-again"-situations were you would like to add a program to your fav's temporarily, it would be great. Oh and removing it from there of course too
3) Oh an when you are at it, please try to find a way of cutting all my sentences at least in half, i think i talk to much
Have a <Arnold>NICE DAY</Arnold>

Hello,
I cannot access the configuration tab, it prompts an error and forces me to quit.
Scrolling is fine, the app is lovely on the ELFin.
Used M2D to map it to my right soft key.

OK. Now I'm 'geting the exception error using the 3rd button. From the details it looks like an error getting the list of running apps...but what do I know? Anyway it worked fine the first couple of times and now it doesn't work.
By the way the icons do show OK in the all apps list. Most of them don't show on the favorites list...

Im running a german rom and everything is running perfectly! Though I'd like to get some details regarding setting up icons for applications as well.
EDIT: the app crashes while loading if the url of a bookmark is quite long. eg. "http://www.google.de/search?source=ig&hl=de&rlz=&=&q=wetter+gelsenkirchen&btnG=Google-Suche&meta=lr%3D" made it crash
Great Job!
I think soon it will be the BEST Finger-oriented launcher in the market.
Great JOB. Some improvements and You are the BEST. In the nearest future I'll try to donate... But third button...(cry)... Analyzing complains, possibly it connected to MUI.
Who has a second language (having exceptions) ? I have...
This version rocks!
One thing I have to mention though. Every new installed program doesn't appear in applications screen if the program doesn't restart first. Is there any way to include this future(maybe with tap and hold to refresh the applications screen)?

WM 6.5.1 Start Menu Sorter - Updated to 1.1

Sure, when Microsoft added the ability to rearrange the order of items in your start menu, I was happy. I use a vertical list and I like it sorted. But I have a lot of installed apps so doing it by hand is a pain at best.
So I spent a day and wrote the WM 6.5.1 Start Menu Sorter. It does just what it says, sorts your start menu. Just install the CAB and run the program.
[UPDATE]
I've release a new version of the sorter. I've really only changed 2 things.
You can now choose to sort Directories first

thanks JoeWilcox!
is it possible to have all the folder shortcuts on top instead of being at the bottom?
Thx, any experiences on HTC stock ROM WM 6.5 21869 (Topaz)?
Thank u JoeWilcox, this looks mighty handy !
I tried this on my Sprint Touch Pro 2 with Energy ROM 6.5 Leo and didn't do much. It definitely changed the order of icons in my Start Menu but they're not in alphabetical order. I ran it a couple times but it didn't change after the first time.
Working good for me, sorts in alphabetical order.
+ 1 for folders on top as i have to move them manually after sorting.
normal 6.5 might not be supported. I don't think they added reordering until 6.5.1.
Re-ordering works for 6.5 in that I can select an icon and move it up to the top, but that's it.

That's the way you do with shipped WM 6.5 without any tools.
May it sort by type first then by name? In result we will get all folders on the top, then files. folders and files will be still sorted by name but separately.

is there any update? it seems to only sort some of it or part of my start menu on build 21877

Files and folders are already sorted seperately, I just weight files first.

Isn't that a build without the improved start menu. It might not work there, it might. I've never installed a build from that branch so I don't know. What sorted and what didnt?
It would be great to get the folders listed first, like on the PC.
Since your 'AwesomeStart.cab' also changes the look of the Settings location, do you think you could provide another cab that orgainizes it like this one does? TIA
How does it change the look of the settings tab. It shouldn't be affecting the icons at all.
When I choose settings within sense 2.5, it looks like normal (prior to when I ran your awesome cab). However, when I click the soft menu for all settings, it goes to a list view of the settings like it does for the start menu, except they aren't in aphabetical order.
Crash on my TD2.... IO exception...
Ok, looks like 'Start menu' is hard coded.... I have 'Menu Démarrer' on my French ROM

Ticking Timer

I developed very simple application - stop-watch with sound. The application provides sound every second. The application is useful for creating nervous environment for some tasks with time limit
Tried on HTC Touch HD and HD2.
Attached Russian version as well (TickTimerRus).
I am going to test.
Thanks
Hi!
I like simple timer + stopwatch like this
But this type of app would be more useful if their running values are visible at the home-screen so I can easily check their values by just pressing home-key instead of taskmanager.
Another advantage of home-screen plug-in is that I will never forget them running in the background eating battery.
cheers!
New version
Ok, for you I made special one - but, since home plugins are rarely used with new devices, now the ticktimer status is displayed as taskbar icon. Works well on HTC HD2, not sure about other devices. Also changed the colors to dark.

[APP][2010-09-04][v1.2.0] ArkSwitch: the task manager, upgraded!

There are many task managers floating around out there, with lots of neat features and great UIs. I've been looking for a good replacement for the HTC Task Manager home screen button that no longer works properly in Windows Mobile 6.5.x, and I've been unable to find one I really like. So I made my own!
SCREENSHOTS AND DOWNLOADS ARE >>HERE<<
ArkSwitch can be opened from any screen that has the top bar visible - I tried to make it simple yet unobtrusive.
You can click the text of an app to bring it to the foreground, click the icon to view the App Info screen, or click the "X" image to close it.
Please see the changelog in the second post.
Important info for chefs and customizers: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8002276&postcount=733
And a quick CAB to disable the Close All confirmation dialog.
I ASK FOR YOUR HELP:
If you are using ArkSwitch in your ROM, please post a message here telling me so. I would really like to know. Also, if you make themes, please post them here for everyone else to enjoy. I would appreciate that.
Also, if you're a developer and would like to help with implementing any features, I'd be glad to accept your patches, changesets, etc.
HOW TO USE:
1. Install the CAB.
2. Either reboot (it will run on startup) or start it from the start menu --> Tools.
3. Click the left half of the top bar (or other area if customized) to bring it up.
CUSTOM THEMES:
SimpleGloss Blue | Dusk | NinjaBlack | Purple Pimp | SRG | Hacienda | Showtime7

Making ArkSwitch into a service - it's pointless - see this post
WM6.5 compatibility mode:
In case you don't want ArkSwitch to take over your top bar, you can disable that functionality and thereby have it function as a standard app. In this mode, the original WM6.5 should also be fully functional. To enable this mode, either do it in the Options screen, or manually set the following Registry value:
[HKCU\Software\ARKconcepts\ArkSwitch]
TaskbarTakeover = 0 (DWORD)
Thanks Ark
Great Work
Can I use program with soft-buttons? And can i remove it from bar? Because i'm using WKTask at same plañe?
P.S. Òû ðóññêèé?
Yes, you can use the program with softkeys. You can select apps by using the D-Pad and then the left softkey to close it or the right softkey to open a menu which will let you switch to it, close it, view the about screen, or quit ArkSwitch.
The only way to "remove" ArkSwitch from the top bar is to close it. One of the main reasons I chose the top bar is ease of access. If something else goes there, then this app can't be accessed easily anymore. I've never used WkTask, but from what I'm reading about it, it looks like the two apps would be incompatible with each other, sorry
P.S. I speak Russian as I'm originally from Ukraine. Please don't use CP1251 for Russian encoding, US browsers don't like it Unicode is better.
looks great! but QVGA please ??
Rows were overlapping eachother.
The the program crashed when I chose exit from the menu and I was forced to soft-reset.

I was wrong in my question. Can I put the launch ArkSwitch on softkey?
(My english very bad, isn't it?)
working good
so far so good on my Whitestone (Imagio) 6.5
1. question- is my regular taskmanager (upper most right hand corner) still supposed to function? bc i loose the little icon and get no response from pressing there. wasn't sure from your description if they both were supposed to function at the same time.
2. my device is wvga and i did not have overlap issues like a previous post.
3. the x's all work good and switching between apps works good.
4. pressing softkey\menu\quit arkswitch exits the program and it has to be restarted. "X"ing the upper right minimizes? is that correct?
5. oh yeah- and touching the upper left is working good to open ArkSwitch.
6. Thank you. I have been looking for a simple solution for a finger friendly task manager.
Really quick program, working pretty good!
I do have 2 requests though, which would make it perfect
I am on a 6.5.3 wvga device and I have some icons overlapping the text... maybe you can crop/stretch all icons to a specific size?
and another request, could you implement a way to exclude processes from showing in arkswitch? like start.exe etc?
Really well done so far!

point the button towards \..\program files\arkswitch\arkswitch.exe that works for me.
EDIT: well, the button doesn't work all the time, I think it has something to do with what program is in focus or something...
guess that adds a 3rd request... sorry to a pain in the ass
Possible X of windows mobile (down right) = close ?
Nice work ! Thanks Arktronic.

I still have my old Hermes. When I have a chance, I'll flash a WM6.5.x ROM on it and get that working. It's on the TODO list

Obviously you didn't read my first two posts. This application is NOT for the original WM6.5! Only for 6.5.x, where the start and X keys are on the bottom of the screen. However, if you'd like to use it as a regular task manager started by a hardware button or something similar, that could be done in the future through an options screen, which is also on the list.

Please see above. And if you're not sure if your English text is good, you can also say it in Russian next time

1. ArkSwitch does not touch the right half of the taskbar at all. I'm not sure which task manager you're using, though.
2. Right, because you're actually using WM6.5.x as opposed to toadlife...
3. Great, that means I can say WVGA works!
4. Correct. Would you like me to add an "Are you sure?" dialog when quitting?
5. Yay!
6. You're welcome

Hmm, I guess if an icon is bigger than I tested with, it would overlap. I'll add that to the list. Can you give me an example of which app(s) had overlapping icons please?
Excluding processes is already on the TODO list.
Yeah, starting the program multiple times doesn't always bring it to the front. You have to have opened the ArkSwitch window at least once before it could do that. I'm not sure why that's happening; I'll look into it some more. It's definitely a bug that should be fixed.

I'm not entirely sure how to do that, actually. If any WinMo devs with experience on this would like to point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it
Thanks for your feedback, everyone!

I've customized some "iReflect" icons with "JWMD Icon Changer".
hope this helps.
Are you sure that the overlapping icons are the customized ones? Because it looks like JWMD only changes the start menu icons, while ArkSwitch looks inside the actual EXE to find its icon.

oops your right, it shows the original icon... it was task manila... the program...
Okay, that makes sense. Thanks for your feedback!
By the way, I've added a to-do list to the second post.
Works perfect on Tilt 2. THanks a lot!
working for me on 6.5

A. I misunderstood "for 6.5.x" as meaning 6.5 and above. Just to let you know i am running plain old 6.5 and my start button still works in the upper left corner.
B. The ArkSwitch button works as well in the upper left corner.
C. Maybe 6.5 compatibility explains why the original task manager doesn't function with ArkSwitch?
4. I would definitely would not want you to add an "are you sure". I hate those.
Hope the feed back helps and is not annoying.
