Let me first state that I AM NOT decrying the needs of Athena owners, nor am I suggesting they shouldn't own one. Everyone has different devices to fit different needs, HOWEVER in the course of heated debate on these forums people have frequently stated that their Athena is MORE THAN CAPABLE of playing video, without optimisation which neither skips, jumps or loses sync. I owned two and over the course of nearly nine months NEVER managed to get a high quality, non-optimised video to display solidly without losing sync.
What I ask is for people to describe a high quality (700mb+) Divx or Xvid file that their Athena can play fluidly and without losing sync, and for the sake of credibility upload a video of this in action. When I get chance later today I will upload a video of an N95 playing a full-size divx movie - I will demonstrate the video size and specifics, show the device playing it whilst multitasking and demonstrate fast-forwarding, pausing and playing and how this affects lip-sync and general playback quality.
Let me re-iterate that I understand that the N95 is not a competitor to the Athena and that for the most part it is unsuited to the needs of people on these forums; but if you're going to state that your video performance is good I'd appreciate if you could prove it! It is after all a powerful machine with loads more RAM and processing power than the humble N95.

I can't say that I'm impressed by the video performance of the athena because it's my largest problem eversince I got it last week especially in 128 dpi settings. I'm neither in the position to say that I'm disappointed also because I really haven't had the chance to play with it that long. I would have to vote later. I appreciate though these types of threads because it forces people to look for ways to either extend their capabilities in trying to know and teach what they can do with their athena to prove that it's a really good machine or to simply shoot down the opinion of others. Suffice it to say that it may bring out the best of the athena or bring it down to te gutter. The best part is that people get to choose base on their best judgement who to believe and which opinion to discard.

Also, it would carry so much useless information designed for home theatre systems at least, that it would literally chock any small device movie player to dealth. What I do play include a 900MB movie which is crystal clear, does not skip at all, and never have any out of sync problem. But I'm not sure if it has gone through conversion, as I downloaded it from the net.
If I want a home theatre movie quality experience, I'd not use Athena to do it. I'll use my home theatre system.

My wording is a little off-kilter. When I say 'unconverted' I mean 'not specifically optimised for the device' I.E. the sort of file you'd download/play on your desktop. Sorry for the equivocal wordage peeps!

I hav to jump in here. The resolution or aspect ratio of your movie file along with the audio coding was low. If I had those settings on a movie and played on the Athena, it would be no problem. I convert almost all my movies using DVD Catalyst and I ensure it is at 30 fps, audio is at 192, the max I can get it and the picture adjustment is at 1100. I have very few problems when I play those on my athena. If I could get the file you have I would love to cross compare, because that video shouldn't choke the Athena at all. At least in my experience using core player.
Then again, this is just my two cents.

i chose that video because it is one i had problems with on my athena.
EVERYONE TRY THIS SHORT VIDEO AND REPORT BACK ON THE PLAYBACK QUALITY. I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE BEST TO HAVE A STANDARD FILE TO TEST OUT THAT'S SMALL ENOUGH TO UPLOAD. It's just a video of my dog recorded on my N95 at tv quality. It is a 640 by 480 resolution video which should be a good ratio for the Athena. I haven't modified it in any way. Let me know what results you all get.

In that case, I'd keep my A rating for the time being because until now I still don't understnad the issue.
I'd test your sample file and provide feedback. There must be something that I've missed I guess. Yes, perhaps I have been real lucky.
I've downloaded it to my desktop runing Vista and want to try it here first. But could'nt play it media player. Do you need to convert it before it can play there too? What program do you use to play it on desktop?
On my device, it says "MPEC4 AAC Audio Decoder not included! It was removed from the official install package because of intellectual property considerations." (strange. I never had this error before)

So, to sum up, for me. It works without conversion on my Athena but not on my Vista desktop.
The issue is that Video playback is an issue with the Athena (and other devices) yet some people insist theirs work fine. If there is no problem then I wonder why threads like this this this this and this among many others exist? (oh, and this!)
Many moons ago I thought I'd solved the problem bu it must've been a lucky video file as a couple of days later I tried a different downloaded movie and back I was to the 'flickery' pictures and loss of sync.
I just wish there was an answer that worked for everyone.

Yes it's my doggywoggy. I use VLC. It's freeware - try it on that to give you an idea of how it should look. The TCPMP extras you need for playback of that file are in PK's extras package just in case you want to get em.

Thinking of buying a hero...
Is it possible to play full size movie AVIs (700Mb, etc) without lag, without having to resize them to a smaller resolution?
I find that resizing them is such a hassle. Currently using a touch dual, and when that was initially released I couldnt play it unless resized. Felt pretty ripped off. Only when upgrade to wm6.5 came out, I could play em. My old HTC Magician handled them much better.
Anyway... just wanted to ask if anyone has tried it... before I buy another dud phone.

AVI is a container and not a codec.
Like all mobile devices (correct me if I'm wrong), there is no h264 b-frame support. Transcoding is your friend. How hard is it to transcode all movies in a directory; Thats just one command line away, geez.
yeah its just one more thing needed to do.
each to their own i guess... but I'm the sort of person who likes to take as little steps / effort as possible to do something. ie searching for a contact and calling them... i'd like to know that I can call them with a few keypresses and done... rather than having to search through a whole list of names and finding the contact.
Also, I prefer to be able to keep files in the format I got them so I can transfer them to another machine if I need to, rather than have a resized file that is only of use to the phone.
Not too sure about the terminology (h264 b frame support) you used, but I had no trouble playing full sized rips on my HTC Magician from 5 years ago. But had trouble with the HTC Nike initially until one year later when I upgraded it to WM6.1.
Anyway, if anyone has had the chance to try it out... let me know thanks =)
I have resized and played on the hero with no issues. I have seen that in a review that it could skip if not resized. I would resize to the heros resolution
It might work better if the aspect ratio is the same, but by the time you do that you could be resizing.

I had some issues getting it to recognise some media formats, but got around by using ImTOO encoding software and used one of the preset profiles which recoded and resized to 320x480.
use handbrake, its so easy.
Second for handbrake. As far as I can tell from my testing, it doesn't like DivX files. It does like MP4 files, with meridian especially. A two hour file took about 20 minutes to transcode straight to the Hero, on my not-particularly amazing tri-core 3ghz phenom. Quality was excellent.
I'd say queue up a list in Handbrake and leave it running overnight.
I used to use fullsize avi's on my diamond but as yet I've not found a decent player on android so I've made the switch to converting to avi's at a fairly large picture size (I forget the exact ratio) & it plays fine in the native video player.
A bit bummed that I have to convert them but it works I guess

Been looking into that too...
Seems like they intend to, but are hindered by things out of their control (lack of Qualcomm drivers from HTC). Sounds like the same issue with my HTC Touch Dual when I initially got it.

Back when I had my Captivate I used these settings:

I put these movies on my Note and they're all still excellent quality. I was assuming that the quality my suffer due to the Note's large size, but it's still great. And with these settings, I'd say about 75% of the movies I encoded were less than a gig and most less than 900MB.

The note...being sent down to us by the gods (why...what gods you ask? Ill tell ya...the AMOLED gods, the robot gods, and the HD gods...and they frown on crabbiness.) and being so well endowed, is quite the media consumption device. What the OP was trying to figure out...was how he might best take advantage of such a wondrous and surely godly device.
And the movie industry...being ungodly as they are, makes an all-hands-on-deck effort to obfuscate and obscure any clearly delineated path to enjoying popcorn-tasting-finger-licking-goodness on the go. For this is their only purpose in life..besides, making movies, of course.
I might add...high profile is. Lovely. On the same subject... I've only used CIFSManger and allshare in combination with TVersity to play media...i use Netflix on the go. But Im curious as well...does anyone know which format and container is required to play native HW decoded video on the note? Does the container event matter? I know i can usually find a video player that can play any video file, but i have issues with .Mkv the most...and the pseudo-5.1 audio and the native player is nice....real nice.....really really niiiiiiiiiiiiiccccccccceeeeeee.
HW decoding is always a plus. And its easier on the battery too.

I was just wondering if anyone had encoded any of their DVDs to play on the Note. I've used Handbrake previously to watch movies on my Captivate and thought someone might have played around enough to have optimal settings for the Note. Using the settings I had for my Captivate, the picture/sound quality is pretty great on the Note.
I use MakeMKV for both blu rays and dvds. (correct me if im wrong) as far as i know, it's like flac. Compresses the video with no loss of quality in both video and audio.

iTunes movies are the perfect resolution and size for the note I found a bunch on torrents just by searching iTunes 720p they look great way better then the dvdrips I have been using

For me its abuot file size. While I have been able to get a 64gb card to work on the GNote, I still am limited by the fat32 4gb restriction, so I am interested in settings for compression. I have many downloaded files bigger than 4gb.

Many of you might already know about this. But i wanted to find a way to watch movies on my tablet. and i stumbled accross DVD Catalyst. The dev is amazing. If you ever have any problems with anything. He always replys back within the hour, couple hours max. He clams 24 hours. but thats if he is sick or somthing. He sells his software for $9.99. Best ten bucks ive ever spent.
Any Dvds you have laying around the house or can get your hands on. You can easily rip and convert in one process. to any device basically ever made. (he has a couple thousand devices to choose from) So with device choosen, it will automatically format and have correct resolution for specified device.
Theres a bunch of differnt settings to tweak with if you know what you doing. or just keep on default for best results for average user. His website www.tools4movies.com he has guides for just about everything. including how to convert for best quality, low space, best quality with less space, ext
The dev (Mitch) also has a couple apps accross all OS's (android, apple, blackberry, kindle, nook) Where you can stream you movie content on your computer to tablet, cell phone, or any other device online. So you don't have to fill up your tablets memory with movie data. instead you stream your movies from computer from anywhere in the world. (With guides of course, how to set up) Its pretty nifty if you ask me. Thats why i'm sharing this with anyone who wants to be able to watch movies on there tablet. without renting them for 5 bucks on the play store. or downloading them illigaly.

Seconded: I've been using DVD Catalyst since back when I owned a Nook Color and have used it to convert hundreds of movies. While I have yet to watch one on my TF300, on my HTC Flyer (which replaced the Nook Color) they play great.
Also, the developer is a real stand-up guy and is very helpful, going to far as to monitor various internet discussion forums answering questions from users of the software.
Another awesome thing about the dev. (Mitch) is on those forums he monitors, I've seen him suggest other things besides his software. So he's not out to get everyone to buy it. Of course he will mention DVD catalyst. But he will also suggest other options to choose from. Hard to find Apple like that these days
But this is the reason why I got a Tegra 3 device. This thing plays everything I throw at it, unlike the sorry Tegra 2.
I would never need to convert file format any longer.

You wouldnt convert to a different format. so our tf300 can recognize the file. The whole reason to convert your dvd is so you don't take up as much space as original dvd. which could be 6 to 8 gb. So instead of 6-8gb you would convert it anywhere from 1-3 gb so no you can store a bunch more movies if you have a big collection. like most pple do
also during conversion. it sets file to our screen resolution. the quality you set it at and any other tweaks you do. which theres so many to choose from. but ya you don't convert it to a format so our tab can read it. you can change the format to whatever you want. thats just not the only point of conversations
The Tegra3 is very powerful, and with players like MX and Dice, it is capable of playing a lot of different video formats that it doesn't support out of the box, which is great if you get your videos from the web, but if you have a large collection of DVDs, you still need a way to get those into a format that you can actually transfer over to your tablet.
But aside from that, if you look around other android-forums, there are a lot of people complaining about issues with playing the video files they already have obtained/created.
With a collection that consists of many differently formatted video files, mkv's and avi's created using different settings, some play better in one player, others play better in another player, and for others you need to tweak with the settings in order to get them to work properly.
By converting your movies, you don't run into this. Sure, it takes some time to actually do the conversion, but once you have your files in the proper format, there is no need to fiddle around anymore, and, the files will play fine on less powerful devices (smartphones or eReader tablets) as well thanks to compatibility with hardware decoding (which also saves a bit on battery usage). And the conversion of files isn't such a big hassle if you can just drop a folder with 10-100 video files onto an application, and start the process with 1 click.
Due to my work, I have a large collection of different tablets, including an iPad3, Kindle Fire, NOOK color, Xoom, Playbook etc, and I can play my video files on every single one without having to install a different player or adjust settings. For the ones that have a memorycard slot, I can just take one of my cards from one, and stick it in another, and know that the videos will play fine.

+ 1. I have been using Catalyst for a few years now and I think it is the best converter out there. The tech support is top notch.
I have been away form the android development for a while now as it didnt have the ability to view movies in it nor was there a tv-out. I was wondering if any of the more recent builds have addressed this? I am having a heck of a time finding it via thread search.
Nope, I don't think anyone got TV out working. There were always bigger fish to fry, and with the userbase not really clamoring for it... No dev ever worked on it.
All our code is open source, so anyone can pickup where we left off. I'd say the project is pretty much done tho.
Wait, the Rhodium has TV-Out hardware? I didn't even know it could do that in WinMo! That's... actually kinda cool, although with as dinky as its CPU is I'm not sure just how useful it would be anyway -- who wants to play a 240p YouTube video on a big TV?

It requires an additional dongle, which should have been provided if you got the phone brand new.
I've never used it - I can't imagine videos are a pleasant thing. Perhaps a presentation or pic slideshow would be cool tho.

I have used it and it is actually quite awesome! I have watched full size divx movies using TCPMP/Core both at home on 46" HD (just to test it) and at various hotels/resorts (cause I always have some new movies ready anytime I fly) and the quality is perfect! To my eye the rhods screen and the attached monitor are pixel for pixel identical. HQ youtube looks fantastic, the same as my HTPC playing youtube in 480p. Haven't tried powerpoint yet but the picture slideshow is kinda cool too.
This is just another reason that I love haret/SD builds from XDAndroid. This is a function that I do not use 99% of the time but it IS there when I need it. That and offline GPS are the 2 big ones that keep me attached to WM (and my BT ODBII scanner I guess, but I have a feeling I COULD get this rockin' in android...if I wanted to put in the time )

Really surprised anyone actually uses this, haha. I guess some dev can still pick it up? Has anyone even tried the TV Out in Android? Seriously doubt it works, just curious.
lol, yeah it outputs in VGA only. So you have to set your monitor either to have black bars on the sides or zoom(which is perfect for widescreen movies). I watch all my movies at home streaming using the divx web player so I am used to 480p on my HDTV(they may be a little smoother looking on the HTPC since its outputting 720p). These movies look pretty good to me(tho HD mkv changes everything). And free increases the resolution ten fold!!
Anyway, back on topic... I have never tried in GBX because I do not use an official cable for TV-Out and because of this I have to "trick" WM by changing the registry so that it will recognize my cable as a TV-Out and not just a headset as it senses automatically. It actually has to change the function of the pins of the mini usb and thus the headphone jack of the multifunction dongle. The sheer hackiness of the solution in WM tells me that there is no way in hell that it will work for me in android with my current hardware.
And, to be honest I don't really want it in android. Lets face it, without external power you could probably watch like one TV episode before the battery crapped out(okay, a bit of an exaggeration, I know, but you know what I mean).
EDIT: Even more off topic but I can't resist. I have ordered a usb OTG cable from hong kong for a buck and once I get it my next experiment will be trying to play a movie using TV-Out, off of an external hard drive, hopefully while on external power.
As long as there are still new things to try on my rhod I can put off getting a new phone... but I am running out fast!

Either you haven't tried OMGB, or you're just not aware...
But that build gets as good if not better battery life than WinMo. Thanks to ACL's amazing work reversing the batt driver for WinMo...

Yes I am aware of it, but you are right, I haven't tried it yet. I do see a lot of good things about the battery life, but I am still too fond of WM to call it quits... i know, i know, probably time to "embrace change"!
I actually get great battery life from you guys GBX (I have hacked the crap out of it). I go easily all day and night doing everything and more than in WM. I love them both!

I have been away form the android development for a while now as it didnt have the ability to view movies in it nor was there a tv-out. I was wondering if any of the more recent builds have addressed this? I am having a heck of a time finding it via thread search.

I can now answer half of your question: You definitely have the ability to watch movies on the rhod running android.
I have just installed MX player from the market and am about 20 mins into a 700mb divx movie on GBX0C with kernel 3.4. So far it is playing very well (much better than I expected, especially with no OC!).
MX installed no prob, then when I started it up it said something like "no codec installed. Install from market?" clicked yes, market comes up with Codec for MX Player (armv6), install that then play movie on card. Great!

i can tell you that OMGB rom does not have a tv-out or at least my phone dont recognize the tv-out cable and flat screen to "see" my phone either. i have one of those tv-out HTC Multimedia ACT100 TV Out Cable for HTC Fuze/Touch Pro cables. works in winmo not on android. but i havent tried any special apps either.
speaking on the quality of the output video in Winmo when put on a TV. It has a lot to do with the file your playing obviously. I carry the same sentiment previously mentioned the RCA out and the offline GPS (tomtom) are what keeps me attached to my Phone.
I use the TV out nearly every day I hook it up to the Gym TV to do insanity or P90X, and listen to the audio via BT headset (I already looks like a fool jumping around I don't need to cause more displeasure on people making them endure Tony Horton or Shawn T). The video shows up not perfect, but I have super compressed files, its good enough to tell what the exercise is and how much time is left)
This setup would be perfect If core player (.mp4 files) would accept AVRCP inputs on the rhodium but that is where my perfect setup falls short. I suppose rather then viewing new phones I could purchase a 32gb sd card and just get different file formats of the videos.

I have tried four free divx players on the Google Play Market on my Rhodium running GB0X. The best performance I found was with Seaman Player, I think that is what it was. MX was sketchy for me, and none of them play as sharply as watching the same files in CorePlayer in WinMo.
To keep from getting to far OT, I have the dongle and it works great in WinMo, but given the playback performance on the built-in screen my hopes are not high that we would have good results on TV-out.

Still on pre-release, but AndroidCentral points out that background tasks and fullHD video cause some lags, killing those tasks makes it smooth. For me to be able to play properly coded videos water tight on a $500 device is essential, if it fails to do so I have little reason to prefer this over the Nexus7. We shall see results soon.

Yeah this kinda does worry me, as a big part of why i'm looking at this is to play movies while a travel, he does say its only with HD rips of blue rays, but would be nice to see if it does it with HD movies downloaded via the playstore etc.
might have to wait to see what happens when people get it in their hands.
Of course there are some 2600k videos too to get the maximum out of the Nexus 10, mostly gaming. Anyone with hands on the device should check this out:

well hopefully this isn't going to be a result of google having to beat the retina, if thats the case then i'd much more want a screen of the 1920x1080 res that is really good, and that the processor isn't running at 100% trying to run.
I'll post some 2560x1440 (not upscaled) clips shortly for folks to check out their new toys, along with same clips in 1080p BD bitrates (35Mbps) for comparison testing.

He said he was downloading things in the back. I think a lot of devices lag when you're downloading things.

Original BD is 1920x1080 with avg bitrates of 30-35Mbps. Rips can keep the 1080p res or be downscaled, but bitrates are inevitably lower (for smaller size) as they're intended to be downloaded.
Many devices now can handle 1080p of the "rip" (lowered bitrate) variety, but fewer can smoothly play "remuxed" (original BD bitrate) 1080p content. So to say that a device can playback 1080p is relatively meaningless unless the bitrate is specified. Anything from Youtube would not be a good test, since YT stuff are highly compressed (very low bitrate relative to resolution), and fidelity is substantially compromised.
My expectation is that N10 should handle "normal" 1080p rips (10Mbps), given it's the latest-gen SoC, and that video playback is a staple use. I'm more curious about performance with BD-bitrate content, and 1440p content, hence the pending clip uploads. Admittedly, these would be more for curiosity's sake than for practical use--there is no 1440p content, and BD ISOs won't fit through wifi pipes, HT40 or no.
Subscribing as videos are the #1 thing I use tablets for. There was one video posted in the general section last week that takes advantage of the N10's resolution. A quick browse back a few pages and you'll find it in one of the threads talking about the screen
Playing back laggy HD video is a major concern. Not that I would watch movies on it myself but the last thing Google and Samsung needs is more ammo against them. This being the only somewhat major issue though, unlike the fake issues like no SD, plastic construction, and tablet specific apps(the ipad ones really are not that much better than the iphone ones, except games with HD in the title).
That said, my core 2 duo chugs during some streams so i am guessing if it chugs on the PC, Nexus 7, ipad 4, tf700, it will chug on the Nexus 10 and everything else that isn't an i7.

What kind of streams are you running against your C2D? I find it hard to believe it's choking on even 1080p 24+ bit-rate streams. Are you on some ancient video card that doesn't have acceleration, thereby forcing your CPU to brute-force the decode?

My guess it has something to do with my home group connection or wifi connection in general. Playback through a USB drive or internal storage never chugs though. Although some files still have artifacting.
I would be interested in knowing if this can play 10bit MKV files.

There are many tweaks that can be used to slim down a loaded system, but regarding games & videos, I would set the heapsize to 512m, to start. The next place I would look is swappiness. Usually when running one big app and not task switching, you'd want to increase this so that other processes are cached to virtual memory, freeing ram for your main process. With 2gb ram, though, the opposite might be better, as some apps will periodically wake to check for email, news, chats, etc. In this case I think it would be better to keep those processes in ram so that they don't cause a hit to disk to wake from virtual memory.
In other words, I would definitely try tweaking swappiness, but I don't know which way would be better. I'm going to sub this thread; please post whatever results you experience.

I'd never heard of a 10bit MKV until you brought it up. So I downloaded a sample to see it.
For what it's worth, I just tried it on my Galaxy Note 2.
The gallery player didn't play it (audio only) but it worked OK with MX Player in software decoding mode.
Since this resolution is so high on this device, is the Nexus 10 the 1st. "ULTRA" high resolution mobile device/tablet? Doesn't ultra start around this resolution or so?

Bsplayer is slightly better. Mxplayer will lose audio. But it can get pretty bad even with my note 10.1. Audio n video gets way out of sync.

I've not had any issues previously using MXplayer. However since this video was animated and in Japanese, it might have been completely out of sync, I have no idea
