How good is your GPS working? - Mogul, XV6800 ROM Development

So I went out and used my GPS for the first road test. After turing on iGuidance i got a fix very quickly and it saw me...but then it was horrible in updating. I would start driving and sometimes it wouldnt even move for 30 seconds. the accuracy was not there either. With my ext GPS it would tell me I was a few feet from an intersection, now im lucky if im near it. I was getting 6-10/10 sats also, so very good. maybe the software? So what are everyone else's driving experiences and with what software? I dont have data so i cant use gmaps/live.

i just had google maps up and drove to the store this morning and it followed me very well....
then it followed me around the golf course almost exactly on the edge of the greens maybe 1-2 feet off at worst

My GPS sucks too. I have used googlemaps and geoscout(which I think actually works better than googlemaps) I am off by about 25 feet in a random direction with googlemaps using satellite maps. I too have 6-10 satellites.
Anyone have a cab for TrackyPro v3.0? I hear that that is really good especially for off roading.

google maps seems very accurate to me. also last night i was out of town and used the sprint navigator to find parking very easily. we were moving slowly, but i would estimate it had us within 10 foot.

It's been working great for me. I tried it out last night while on a quick drive and it tracked me the whole way which about 5 satellites much of the way. It was only a few feet off the entire time.

my google maps is accurate to within about 5-10 feet, i was in line at the mcdonalds drive through last night and for kicks i brough tup the satellite picture and watched my dot get closer to the window, lol

My gps is working better now. This is how I fixed it. First I relocked my phone. Then I upgraded to the original leaked version of 2.16.651.0 and let it do it's thing. DO NOT USE A MODIFIED 2.4/2.5 BOOTLOADER!!! For some reason the gps is of by about 20 feet when using the modified/hacked bootloader and is almost exact when using the original. The original is also much faster not only with gps but in genreal.

no offense, but this is completely false. the bootloader has no effect whatsoever on gps performance.

That may be true but for some reason that is what I have noticed. I have not changed any other settings either. Oh and dcd since you are here are you planning on releasing a kitchen for the new gps rom?

Used TomTom on the way home from a Sprint store and the thing followed me the whole way. Told me to turn the split second I got in front of the driveway. I am liking the added feature very much. Only complaint is why do I have to turn on google maps to get the GPS to work?

the GPS has to be initialized before it can be used, and some apps (like tomtom) dont do that
theres a thread on ppcgeeks about it, the OP recommends using maction (?) GPSViewer to initialize since i guess its faster than googlemaps

Google maps and Live Search work very well for me. Pretty much spot on.

I drove around today and tested it out. Followed me perfectly on the roads. No hicup of path....just chugged along right where I was....both in Google Maps and Live Search....Altho L.S. is cool because it shows the arrow...
My connections somtimes won't connect....like I've noticed it seemed slightly buggy...maybe just me....but if it does something weird...a soft reset DEF fixes it.
DCD.....YOU ROCK MY FACE! THANX!
PS...
This was my first ROM flash ever....I thought I was unpacking the BootLoader to my PC before I wanted to actually start...I hadn't read anything, and it installed on my phone and before I knew it I was staring at the multicolor bootloader screen.....F*%K! Long story short...I figured it all out with these forums and so THANKS!

I have had good luck with tom tom navigator as well. I too have the problem with having to have another program initialize the gps,but I understand there are people working on it.

Mine worked well all weekend. Using Google Maps it followed me all around town. Same as a previous posted for grins i pulled it up in a drive through and it tracked me slowly moving up in line. One or two hiccups but nothing earth shattering.

GPS works great
mine with googlemaps will update itself every second it looks like. tried it while driving around San Diego, it was spot on the whole time. if you turn on Field Trial when you're running a GPS app, then look at the GPS stats it will even show you your horizontal speed in meters/second. tried that while driving around too...seemed to be right on the money. have anywhere from 4 to 8 satellites most the time. at work right now in La Jolla, I've got 4 inside the building.

I'm having a similar issue with iGuidance and sent an email to my contact at iNav to see if there is a known issue.

Thanks. I found the app when I was looking around today and installed it. It does work well. Click it, it opens up the GPS then opens TomTom(or whatever program you want it to open).
Here is a thread on xda that links to ppcgeeks http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=363111

GPS
Mine works like a hot damn.
Mobo

I took my boat out today and used it... thing was SPOT ON using gmaps! I stopped at a few islands and walked around and it tracked me all the way and it was exactly where the satellite pic said I was.
Sometimes I noticed in my car that if its not close to a window it will only get like 2 sats and the position wont be all that great. I have GPS built in my car, so its not a big deal.

Copilot Live 8 deal $19.99

I saw this at the http://www.alk.com store. They're selling copilot Live 8 with maps for $19.99. limited time of course. I got my copy.
What do you think? I'm considering it since it's only $20. Not thrilled with amAze or nav4all, both free. I like google maps but it's not voice navigation.
I watched this review and it looks pretty good. Can't beat 20 bucks.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3sI0iu1OQk
Bought and used this weekend just for short trips around town. Handy and worked okay but not a replacement for my Garmin.
$20 seemed too cheap to pass up.
Used it this morning. Works great. Kiss AT&T telenav good bye!
Think they're trying to get users hooked before someone converts 'Google Maps with Voice naviagtion' to WM for free!!!

That was my thought.
lol damn, saw this too late... It's $24.99 now...
i jumped on this deal too. if you download the pc app for it they even offer a new map for free. the new map is outdated though. both maps do not have my neighborhood on them. my neighborhood is about 2 years old and just started showing on maps within the last year. ocn had it mapped last summer and it showed on both google and tomtom this summer. i'm pretty surprised that it's not on the new map.
I used to use co-pilot but gave up because I called them way too many times to reset my "keys". It was hard to explain to them that I flashed my "custom" rom like I changed underwears. The lady there would questioned me why I have so much problem. I guess they think I am installing it in various phones of mine. So I switched to IGO8 to get away from having to call them when I flash another custom rom.
I used to sent in logs of areas that I droved that are not in their maps...and they would update their maps.
As far as their GPS, it is pretty good.

Hi SL...I also have it..do not need to call....all you need to do is to de-activate CoPilot before you flash and the re-activate when done. I hope this helps anyone.
Thanks for the tip! I bought it & installed, but wondered if there would be issues next time I decided to flash...
now with deactivate button
I went for the deal. So far I like it, but haven't used it enough to make an informed judgement. (as well as its my first tbt nav app). I did want to say to SL thatCopilot Live 8 has a deactivate button in the app now so there is no need to call support if you load a new ROM .....as long as you remember to deactivate it first.
I bought it over the 'sale' weekend, and have flashed twice since then without de-activating it. I don't use the 2577 folder install method, I use Sashimi to copy the entire \Program Files\CoPilot directory structure from a backup location. The first time I run it it needs to re-activate, but it only takes a couple seconds.
Can anyone confirm the necessity of de-activating before flashing?
I did it also.
So far soo good ! .
I used to have the old IPAQ Nav program moved over from my old IPaq 6515 to my previous HTC diamond. It worked well , but the graphic was basic.
Since to weeks I have the Samsung Omnia 2 (Bell Canada)and the new CoPilot seems to run very nice (at least graphic wise) and I find it preety easy to use.
Anyway for 20 bucks was a great value !
Works much better then Google maps. The Copilot maps don't have my Street either, my development is about 2 years old. Very good user interface.
Ironically enough , close to my house they made a link between two streets a year ago , and I see it on Copilot , but not on Google maps on-line !
Go figure..

Bing for WinMo Now comes with turn by turn navigation

Finally, this is available for WinMo phones. I just downloaded and will give it a try as soon as I step out of work. Not sure if y'all have given it a try yet.
Here is the CAB

WM6...?
Does anybody know if this works on a WM6 Kaiser? I downloaded from the site yesterday but it was the same version (4.6.9179.1) that I've had for a while.

I will post the CAB file.
I have posted a link to the CAB in the first post.
what version is this?
I installed it on my Tilt2. I have a 19 mile ride home from work & got to test it. Bing navigation gets confused. Turning around in my work parking lot made it think I was already traveling & had taken a wrong turn. By the time I had gone from the corner my office is on to the next corner, Bing was back on track. And pretty much stayed that way for the various roads & turns (about 3 miles) that took me to a major interstate. However, several corners & the interchange onto the interstate had Bing briefly recalculating the route. Most of the interstate trip was uneventful for Bing. My route requires switching interstates before taking my local exit. And there's been a major expansion construction project going for over a year, with open roadways shifting as often as twice a week, sometimes. As I might expect, Bing's maps are preconstruction (as I'd expect everybody's to be till things stop changing). So, it was interesting to watch Bing continually recalculate for that 1/2 mile. Once we hit the exit ramp (which hadn't changed, even though the highway to it had), Bing locked on & never waivered for the last several miles home. All in all, it works pretty well for a first version of tun by turn. It does need some refining. But it's definitely usable.
Countries supported?
It appears that it only supports USA for now.
Its ridiculous how it has support for many other countries for the old Bing but not Australia.

[Q] Vibrant issues before & after OTA update!

First post, long time lurker.
Right off the bat I would like to thank all of you out there in the community who have and are contributing their time and energies, again thank you!
I'm not worried about coming off as a noob (because I am) but I've been experiencing a laundry list of issues since I purchased the phone (T-mobile in the states) and the consensus was that most likely updates would resolve them overtime.
I finally got the latest OTA from t-mobile 2 days ago and my GPS is still messed up! It worked better with the GPS fix I had found on here, has anyone else noticed this? 0 satellite fixes! and also I've been getting this annoying clicking & stuttering sounds during any audio (streaming, playing mp3s). I had read that it was a program running in the background that was most likely culprit. Has anyone tracked this one down as of yet? Last but not least, battery life! After getting the OTA I decided to see if it would make a difference and it seems just the same if not worse! I let it power it self down and then charged it 100% and over the course of no phone calls and 3 txt msgs (No GPS/Wifi, no 3g, just edge) in less than 24 hours it had died. At first I thought the battery life was due to me constantly playing with it but I have since given up using the phone if I know I'm going to be away from my charger for more than 3 hours, this is starting to get to me!
So to boil it down, should I wait for froyo or should I try and get a replacement?
Any solutions or advice will be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Before we suggest anything, why dont you check your system status to see what is using your phones battery life. might be that is a good start.

I too have noticed that the gps is still not working. My location locks and after after minutes of navigating, the gps signal drops and I have to constantly exit and renter navigation every time it says "SEARCHING FOR GPS"

Wow I know exactly what you mean but If you find a solution to this gps thing let me know
Somewhat of a solution, do the GPS fix along with the J16 update. IE use the 'supl.google' server and 'msbased'
With these two "fixes", I get a lock inside the house and even not being near a window, it can place me either in my bedroom or the living room

Alright thank you very much, that did the trick. GPS issue is now once again resolved. But the main one for me right now is these clicking/stuttering sounds when I play/stream music, any ideas on that one?

GPS Problem? But is there really?

Hi all
Theres alot of talk about GPS problems with this device.
Im a Navigational Officer with a marine survey company and GPS troubleshooting is in my day to day line of work.
The biggest problem i have with new units is well theyre built in Asia and then these units get shipped over to the USA and Europe. So when they first get turned on they are expecting a satalitte geometry for Asia.
These means it can take a long long time for devices to get a lock. Once it gets it though future times you use the device should be nice and quick an easy. Now the equimpment im using is completely different to the Tranformer Prime but the stuff i use is worth millions of millions of dollars. So its safe to say if it can take up to several hours for a first time lock to occure with a million dollar piece of gps equipment how long will it take for a tablet? Most of the time i have to reprogram the card and tell it its at a certain lat long this reduces first time start up to maybe 40-50 minutes before it gets a good strong signal. So bare that in mind when your saying GPS isnt working with the device have you really tested it?
Now i dont have my Transformer Prime yet ( preordered through amazon uk) and when i do there will be a extensive test done on wifi and GPS and some tweaking to improve them best i can. But here are some suggestions you might consider.
1. WIFI - yes turn your wifi . Yes i know this sounds stupid but it helps the tablet find itself that first time it tells it ohh im in this country and i need to look for this. Do this several times then turn your Wifi off and try GPS on its own.
2. Leave it alone - I know its hard to do but just turn your GPS on and then just leave it dont move it touch it play with it. Just let it find itself and the satalittes. After finding itself a few times it will become quicker.
3. Wait for Update - Im in not doubt that a good firmware update will fix this problem in the future even with masking from the aluminium shell of the transformer its still going to be able to get a GPS lock even if its just a handfull of sats and technially you only need 4. With a new firmware it will allow the device to find itself a little better. I do it in work all the time reprogram for different regions.
I hope this helps anyone. But the end of the day GPS isnt instant guys. Tom Tom and Garmin have made it look easy the end of the day but thats with the programing of the units in advanced that allows for fast geometry fixes. Just be patient.

great post. I know I haven't really really tested mines because I got impatient after a couple mins..lol plus never really took prime outside yet. thanks for the info. patience is a virtue.
tomorrow im going to cold boot from airplane mode, let it sit outside for like 30 minutes in navigation and see what happens

Nice summary. I think the amount everyone here has learned about the workings of GPS is college equivelent. But other tablets don't require any priming or special conditions to work. They just do. And that includes Asus' own TF1 and Slider.
Quite true other devices dont have the same problem you are right. But you have to remmber Asus have rushed this tablet out on the Market so to beat the competition. The firmware might not be as up to date as they may like and some nessicary tweaks may need to be in order. Im sure Asus main concern are other areas of the tablet like getting it to power up and run. GPS fixes are more secondary.
I could be wrong and there could be a defect with the tablets ( i hope there arnt any problems) but im hopeing with new updates sat tracking and lock will become much quicker.
While waiting for Prime, I upgraded my OG Droid to Samsung Galaxy Nexus. No GPS issues. And compared the TF Prime to my wife's Samsung 10.1 Tab. No GPS issues.
Couple that with Asus Rep from TF1, and I expected better. Disappointed in GPS perf.

People have tested it with an external Bluetooth receiver and it works well. If it was a general s/w issue I'd imagine it wouldn't. And remember, it's the OS that talks to the GPS chip not s/w that Asus had/has to develop on thier own. The chip itself is made by Broadcom and is similar to what's in the G-Tab and TF1 so there's nothing unique about the Prime compared to other HC devices (GPS wise).
as we speak my tablet was put into airplane mode i did a reboot now it is sitting in my window and running gps test looking for satellite not going to touch until 930 and see if we find anything

fishbowl_00,
Great thinking, but once you get your prime you may have a different line of thought. I've been testing mine for days, using every conceivable configuration imaginable. I've been using GPS since it was released during the LORAN days and have never seen anything this weak!
Mine can usually get a fix outside with a good view of the sky. I even got it to lock on indoors a few times. The problem is it can't hold the lock. Sitting in the same position it will suddenly lose all eight or twelve satellites for no apparent reason and then slowly start searching and maybe finding them again after several minutes. The signals are always marginal. Driving around I can usually get a lock some of the time, if I hold the prime up to the window. Then for no reason it will show me driving out through the forest and then get lost! This is not a one time thing. It happens over and over again.
After several emails to Asus tech, I've been told everything to "it must have a Wi-Fi connection for GPS to work" to "meantime please try to use Google Maps app from the main menu by tapping APPS -> then MAPS icon, please check if your 'current location' is displaying correctly. If not I would suggest to have it exchanged with your place of purchase or you may proceed with a RMA service to have the issue corrected."
Now this morning, Asus has said "Please note that this product is not a professional GPS device and signal performance can be easily influenced by factors including, but not limited to: weather, buildings and your surrounding environment." Never mind that the other tablets and cheap receivers on the market aren't professional GPS devices either, but seem to operate without these problems.
The last straw was when then removed GPS from their specs online this morning on their website. Seems they think that if they pretend it isn't there no one can complain! After all *specifications are subject to change without notice.
Sorry if I sound a little bitter, but I've had it with Asus.
My test airplane mode on, reboot, open gps test, let sit for 30 minutes
Update 1: 10 minutes in we have a really cold prime from sitting in a window on a 20 degree night but we have zero satellites
Update 2: 20 minutes in the prime is now even colder and still zero satellites only 10 minutes left and we will see what happens
Update 3: tablet dropped to 61.7 degrees wow its freeezing but still no lock on gps my test is complete GPS = FAIL

Tell me about it...
People do not turn on your Wifi to test your GPS its a decoy. When you do this of course it will work because Google maps uses Wifi location as well this would just patch it.
If you really want to test the OP theory of the Asia region that is easy, we need some one with ROOT to download a GPS neuter app from the market. When running you can uninstall the current config and download the GPS data.
I would have done this myself but I do not have root with the firmware I received.
Can someone confirm with ROOT?

Is there somewhere outside it can get a clear view of the southerly sky? It should lock then because other's have gotten it to.

i recommend that u use gps status with wifi turned on to find satellites for the first time. it worked for me. will take 10+ mins. once u get a lock, next time is easier. also try this outdoors in open area and not from window sil

Maybe they installed the Eastern hemisphere GPS chip instead of the Western one.

And as soon as your Prime changes location and/or can't access Wi-Fi it will lose lock and not be able to reacquire satellites. For people that only need GPS when they have access to Wi-Fi this really isn't that big an issue. Mapping and navigation while moving (without a wireless signal) is pretty much impossible.

Issues after issues : GPS Tracking Problem

Alright, i am not a stranger in this subforum anyway so i will kick this in right away.
My Eternity served me very well in GPS Navigation Before (last month, it helped me take the journey to a brand new City to take a TOEFL test and returned home safely)
But now, i just realized it yesterday, when it failed to track down where i was on the road.
I mean, the 3G Signal is fine, i can surf web, i can search location on Bing Maps, but it fails to track down where i am. Sometime it will display something like "Sorry , Bing Maps can't ..." or it will show me somewhere not even close to my house ( i suppose it is where the tower of AT&T located.)
Somehow the GPS really fail on 3g, if i hook it up with a USB cable, or WIfi, it will show me kinda exactly where i am ( with a big circle covered up amount of area show the sign that the phone is not really sure where i am really located in that area)
I am on the latest update from HTC and Microsoft, anybody facing the same problem? I would like someword from someone use AT&T over here.
Thanks.

Wow dude. You are totally having too many issues. Gotta get a new device.
I have had literally zero issues with my Titan. And heck, the GPS lock on all my Windows Phones have been just fast and spot on, especially the Titan. This is whether I'm on 3G or 4G.
Bad luck?
Could be a temporary issue. I know every so often, GPS satellites will go crazy and just not work properly for a day or two and then be just fine.

HTC replied me with a message about letting the "Location" services on (which i always let it on) , so it is no help.
Anyway, i recognized yesterday that whenever i go outside , i will stuck on 3 bars for Signal (which i always had full bars when i went outside before)
Might it be the low-signal problem again?
I don't know if i might end up having the AT&T version which is slow on getting the update
And hey bro... how could you get the Lumia 800 that fast??? LOL

Well the GPS radio does not require you to have a signal with your wireless carrier. GPS is separate from data/voice, but of course it does need the data connection to download maps and directions.
I don't know if the update will fix your issue as the release notes don't say they fix any GPS issues. I haven't heard many people having GPS issues to begin with, so I don't think its a massive issue. Maybe its interference from something around your house? What happens if you go elsewhere?
I got the Lumia because Microsoft/Nokia gave one to me.

That's sweet dude... i am currently still thinking about buying Nokia again since i have had bad experience with Nokia before.

Weird. Maybe its the back plate? I read that the backplate has some contacts in it that help to increase overall phone reception, and that may include GPS reception. If you backplate isn't on the phone properly, then that may be causing interference, in which case, you may need to get a replacement backplate.

I should wait tomorrow and try it once more time, the HTC Supporter is gonna call me also. We'll see how it turns out.

Maybe try to reboot your phone once a day or two, & all will be fine.
I had the same issue once with GPS, & after reboot, all went fine.
God luck
No bro... this thing is so hard to predict.
With 3G , i can get the position after quite awhile... with a big circle around... they normally point at somewhere else... really hard to get correct position.
With Wifi, it catch my position right away, but always with a big circle around... if i disconnect wifi and disconnect 3G too, it will be able to track me down for quite awhile...
Turn off everything before i track my position, i got nothing from the phone.
Hand down, this is kinda clear that i have Hardware failure... but strange... one month ago, it was still fine!
me too!
I am now having the same GPS problem on my euro titan as well grr! Even after flashing several roms it still does not work, and what is even worse is that it sometimes does work!
