Redirect GPS data to USB port, use w/ laptop? - Mogul, XV6800 ROM Development

For all you genius software / hardware hackers on the board: Is it possible to write a program that will "pick up" the GPS data from and then feed that data to the USB port (or BT) in a standard GPS data stream, so that the Mogul can be utilized as an external GPS for a laptop? Since one of the GPS configuration options is to "Allow Windows to manage GPS", and doing so allows multiple programs to access the data simultaneously (i.e. Google Maps and TeleNav) it would seem to me that it's possible to write a piece of software that can request the GPS data from WM and then open the USB port and stream the data out. Having GPS on the Mogul itself is great, but it would be even more valuable if it could be tethered as an external GPS device. Any programmers want to take a stab at this?

I'd also like to see this happen, ideally over bluetooth.

Looks like there is an API for GPS, and some information out there on how to utilize it. See http://www.codeplex.com/gpstracker for a project that collects GPS data from an internal or external GPS and then uploads the data to a server. Seems like a simple enough matter to do the same thing but redirect to USB instead of upload to server. Maybe the code for this project would be a good jumping off point. Also, the "Embedded Windows Mobile GPS" forum at mobilitytoday.com might be a good resource.

Check out GpsGate , it can redirect gps port to different port like tcp, udp, bluetooth, activesyn (could be this). You have to test it out to see whether it work.

Also checkout the free GPS2Blue.
From the webpage:
This GPS-PDA utility has several features. It transforms your PocketPC into an external bluetooth GPS receiver, allowing you to use it with your laptop PC or any other device which can use a bluetooth GPS. Since version 1.4, GPS2Blue also allows to redirect GPS data to a TCP/IP port. It can also log to a file the data received from the GPS. Another feature is the PDA clock adjustment based on the precise GPS satellites clock. Finally, for Tomtom 5 (or 6) users, you can create a new POI from coordinates.

Be sure to check out the section titled How to use with TCP/IP over USB?

I just managed to get this going with my Kaiser over TCPIP using GPS2Blue & HW VSP. MS Streets & Trips 2008 sees it as a GPS and reads the data. Pretty cool...

Or maybe it thinks the TP is running FB from the legit webOS app
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
You don't believe me?
Ever think its because every other platforms FB app has been recently updated..and WebOS has not?
Facebook now requires a GPS connection, hence why almost all mobile FB apps give a rough location now when you post
OK.. Next question.
About that SIM Card slot...
Antenna? SIM Card? SD? Identifier? What IS that?
What exactly is that? Can you take it out? Can you insert something into it? Can you use it in some way?
If not...why would they include it...? It must be useful in some way...
That's odd...
its the sim card slot for the 4g models. on all other models its a dummy with the serial number
and there is NO sim card hardware if you have a dummy slug, teardown confirmed
but it DOES have the pins and chipset to wire one in but that would require a meta-doctor of the 4G doctor for drivers (webOS), but then CM7 would not work
Would have loved to have had an SD slot.
that would have been nice for the 16GB users, but im sure there will be a much easier method for OTG with a flash drive/sd card reader in the near future

Facebook no longer does that for iPhones, Androids or anything else. It'll simple say via mobile, if anything.
Maybe Facebook is buying WebOS?

Read this http://www.precentral.net/how-webos-facebook-app-made-jobs-yell-zuckerberg to understand why facebook for webos isn't as consistant as official facebook app interfaces.
Regarding the via mobile message, like others said, it was updated for ios and android devices. It still says Blackberry, Windows Phone, etc for other platforms.
You can put your conspiracy theory to rest.
Okay.
Is anyone getting that Wifi and Sound problem from time to time?
Every now and then, the sound will become rattly. It just happens.
And every now and then, the WiFi will just stop working. And you have to reset it.
It's happening increasingly often..is it just me?
Noticing the WiFi issue for sure. Never happened before 3.4.
Um, in Android. What's with Facebook not working?
I see people with the icon on their homescreens. But... Why if it doesn't work.
It shuts down repeatedly.
I never really looked into this issue since I browse the facebook website rather than using the app but I did skim over this issue. I believe it crashes because it's trying to pull your location and the touchpad has no GPS. Solution is to fake it. I think there's a fake gps app on the market to fix this.
As to why people have the facebook app. 2 functions. Contact syncing and ability to share photos via facebook app.
comment just disappeared
What is the cause of the HP TouchPad's bulkiness? If you tap the back of your TouchPad with your fingernails, it sounds hallow- do you think they'd be able to issue out new backings that would make the TouchPad half as thick?
Another thing is, you can scroll through card view left and right, but why not up and down?
Ever notice in webOS, when you're interacting with card view and you tap to bring the card up and it's blurry for a moment- why does that happen?
Odd...

Bluetooth?

I saw a thread suggesting the nook color had bluetooth capability after you put CM7 on it. Does the nook tablet have bluetooth built in too, and if so, can you use it with CM7?
Nope, we can't use bluetooth. At least not yet. I believe the bluetooth chip is there, but it will take some time until the developers can get it working.

The longer more technical answer is that to get bluetooth working we need a "magic number" that represents a physical connection to the bluetooth chip inside the tablet. This number is unique to the Nook Tablet (not the same on any other device), and without it, the bluetooth functionality can't be initialized. (If you're even more technically inclined, we need a gpio value ".nshutdown" used for the wilink device initialization on the board file).
There may be a way to use the collective power of the internets to find it (ie, get 50 people to search a dozen gpios each until bt initializes), or maybe even create a sysfs interface to reset and reinitialize the device on a single device, but no one has been working on it due to more pressing matters like getting the 3.x kernel to work.
Is the gpio pin something that can be changed by a user and brute forced by members of the boards? Or is it change pin, compile kernel test, and repeat.

So I am running a side loaded Nook Tablet 16GB, GoLauncher intalled and everything working well.
I have been trying to enable bluetooth, but to no avail.
I intalled Elixer2 and Elixer Widgets, went to place a widget on the home screen, selected bluetooth, and get an error which says "No Bluetooth Adapter"
Would this be due to the fact that the tablet has no default bluetooth and needs to be able to communicate with the adapter, which means we need to find the special number to unlock the Texas Instrument 1270B and allow it to speak between antenna and chip?
Look above your post for answer.

Absolutely Amazing
I am not Android dev literate enough to find out how to try out different numbers, but if someone wouldn't mind making and posting a step-by-step guide, I wouldn't mind investing some time and effort to try out different options.
Maybe we could make a thread then where everyone could post ranges of numbers that he would try out?
our tablet has no bluetooth, never will

There is NO Bluetooth hardware in Nook Tablet
We have the same module, WL1270B, as the Kindle Fire.
I took my Nook Tablet apart just to verify if the Nook Tablet have Bluetooth support. Before that, I’ve tried many GPIO values and every time I turned on Bluetooth, the Nook Tablet would just restart. This is the best shot I have of the Nook Tablet wireless module. The text on the module was so small, I could barely read it even at close distant.

After that though, i thought they figured out they could activate bluetooth but only to reach about a meter or so. which could still provide useful for keyboards and gamepads. the Nook color had the same thing and people have definitively used it's bluetooth. Not sure if ive got that right so dont quote me but im pretty sure thats what they conluded.
No BlueTooth They also told me there is no camera on my Nook and my Nook takes great pictures
Good 1. April joke
Great joke with the camera, I guess it is a built in Hasselbladt

A system that block drivers from MAKING or RECEIVING CALLS is under developing

Researchers at India's Anna University of Technology in Tamilnadu have developed a way to prevent those behind the wheel of a vehicle from making/taking calls or texting. By blocking the signals to and from a mobile phone used by the driver of a vehicle, it prevents the driver from losing focus on his task. The hard part in developing the system say those working on it, is blocking the driver's phone from working while still allowing passengers in the vehicle to use their device.
The system detects if the driver is using the phone while the vehicle is in motion. If so, a mobile jammer blocks the radio waves from getting to the driver's phone. To get around the problem with the passenger's devices, the jammer has a low range which should allow others in the vehicle to use their phone.

Great concept but I'd much rather see Bluetooth being enforced.
1. Driver must enable Bluetooth in order to make calls while driving.
2. Use the built-in GPS to tell if the vehicle is traveling faster than 10MPH.
3. Once the vehicle is in motion, Bluetooth cannot be enabled unless the driver finds a safe place to pull over.
4. Using simple commands via Bluetooth the driver can make calls and text messages. "Call John" "Text John"
5. The phone will read text messages through the Bluetooth so that the driver cannot try grabbing the phone to read them. Whether it be a Bluetooth headset or built-in Bluetooth in the vehicles sound system.
Then we will have a safer road for everyone.

I'm guessing this requires some kind of hardware in the car that creates a bubble around the driving area (not exactly like the picture) ?
Otherwise, it seems too impractical and voluntary to be worth anything.
in my country every drivers used phone while driving tsk tsk tsk..

[Q] Methods for streaming video from my PC remotely?

Many of the suggestions I've ran across so far were for local wifi streaming. Im looking to be able to watch something stored on my pc with my N4 away from home via mobile network. I have an unthrottled data plan, so nothing is overkill.

Ok I figured it out, and feel silly that it was under my nose this whole time. I hate when people figure out a problem without sharing the solution so I'll share for anybody with the same question in the future.
1. Download the Plex server (Plex for connected TVs and streaming devices): https://www.plex.tv/downloads
2. Invest $4.99 (well worth it) into the Plex app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexapp.android
3. Setup the Plex server on your computer and enable the myPlex server. (see attachment)
Your app should discover your computer as if you're connected on the same network.

I never implied that you weren't going to share it, so my apologies if my wording seemed directed at you. My "not sharing" comment was directed to people that fix a problem they have without sharing a solution after the fact. By all means, I'd love to hear your method!
Other methods I ran across were a bit wonky. Plex offers the ability to change the bitrate of the videos I'm streaming, which was a major plus for me. The five bucks was well worth it. (having a gift card balance left over didn't hurt either.)
