dcd's 2.x ROM + GPS + time reset - Mogul, XV6800 ROM Development

Anyone else getting their System Time on the Titan reset everytime the GPS is used?
Now this may only be related to Garmin XT software. But so far i have tried dcd 2.0, 2.1, 2.2 ROM and all have this issue.
THis is what happens:
1) Start Garmin XT - everthing is OK
2) GPS gets a lock (indoors)
3) At this point is when the system time resets to 7PM (Feb2,2,2008)
That happens every single time the GPS is first accessed.
I can manually Upate the time from the network and it sets correctly, even while Garmin XT is running.
The time stays this way until the Titan turns off (timeouts).
So when i hit the power button. The time resets again as soon as the GPS starts to lock into the Cell towers (AGPS)
I don't have any other GPS apps to try. SO i don't know if its a GPS radio issue.
Basically it looks like the GPS driver or software accesses the system time (probably form the cells towers) and it resets.

Garmin is the culprit, it doesn't happen with any other GPS software.

i dl'd torrent for the tomtom 6 iso us/canada if u like to try

no discussing warez youre going to get yourself in trouble by mods

Im also using 2.2.0 and Garmin XT . A couple of mins after I start Garmin, the time resets. This also happend with 2.1.0. Is this also happening with other GPS software?

This same exact thing was happening to me. I then did a HARD reset by pressing the 2 soft buttons while powering up and then hitting R on the keyboard. I went through the setup wizard for WinMo 6.1 (I'm using dcd 2.2.0) and immediately installed Garmin Mobile XT. Got a sat fix in a few seconds and my time never reset.
I highly doubt Garmin Mobile XT is the culprit. I killed all apps in Task Manager before doing the hard reset and my phone was constantly resetting the time. And after the hard reset and installing ONLY Mobile XT I don't have the problem. I did not install QuickGPS this time and noticed that it runs as a background process.
This was also happening when I would launch Holux GPS Viewer and has even happened to me when I had no GPS software running at all. So either Garmin is installing some sort of filter driver or runs some sort of background process that is completely not obvious to me... or it's just not Garmin and is something else we all have in common.

Are you sure about that? I haven't yet tried to do the hard reset after updating the ROM. Hard Reset wipes out everything right?
Which soft keys did you push when power up?
What exactly is the procedure?

THis is what I found out so far. I would say that it is indeed Garmin XT that is causing the issue, or at leat the Intermediate Driver that its using.
Basically its like this:
Garmin XT receives a GPS lock and syncs the GPS time with the Titan's System Time.
When Garmin XT locks onto only the AGPS it syncs with what im assuming is the Cell phone tower time or partial time if it can't triangulate. Hence the incorrect system time sync.
However, if you are outside and have actual Satellite GPS locks, Garmin will sync to the correct time.
So the temporarly work around is either.
Turn on Garmin while your outside and have your phone ON (not in standby). So keep it ON for a couple mins, before starting Garmin XT. This will pickup GPS not just AGPS.
or Start Garmin XT as usual.
At which point your System Clock will change with the Sync to an incorrect time. Now wait for full GPS Sat lock (3D is best). At this point DISABLE GPS (within Garmin XT) and renable it again. And BAMM...just like that the clock will change to the correct time, since it has this info from the GPS Sats.
So my conclusion is that Garmin Syncs the Titan's System Time to GPS time. BUt like i said it could just be the intermediate driver.
Note that i tried Google Mobile with GPS and did not have this issue.
So the real question should be, is how to Disable Garmin from Syncing our System Time?? ANyone?

Your right on CannonBaller. I'm seeing the exact same behavior. But now that I think about it, I've been running Garmin Mobile 10 (Garmin with the external GPS) for 6 months and I never had a problem until I upgraded to the ROM from here. This isn't a cooked ROM because I didn't need to unlock my phone to install it. I'm not too familiar with kitchens and cooking so I kept it simple and just installed the basic one that came out in January.
But if we're seeing the same behavior from WM61 ROMs then that tells me that it's something in the WM ROMS. Would you agree? I hope this isn't the case because that may mean that the official HTC ROM could have the same problem and that would SUCK!

it is Garmin XT. Same thing happens to me. What I have done is I run quickgps to get a lock, close that app and then open garmin and it gets a lock within a few seconds. If you run garmin without getting a lock on your location within a certain amount of time (not sure the amount) it will reset your clock as well as the date. Then when you update your phone to the correct date/time you will receive all the appointment and alarm notifications that occurred between the date and time it went back to and the current date and time.
In conclusion it is easiest for me to just get a gps lock with quickgps and then load garmin.

I think you mean GPSViewer not QuickGPS. QuickGPS downloads EE data from the internet.
I too have resorted to getting a fix with GPSViewer before loading Mobile XT and have had great results. I searched for a registry key or something to disable time sync but I didn't find anything.

Maybe someone can write a script that automates this. I tried writing on that automatically syncs the clock to the cell network (via settings on the comm manager) after MobileXT is closed, but the RunWait command wasn't working properly.

This same issue, except with Garmin Que is in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=368035
Apparently there is a setting to fix it via Menu>System Setup>General Tab>Uncheck the Synchronize system clock, but that menu option isn't in Mobile XT. It does give hope that there might be a registry setting for it somewhere though.
Has anyone asked Garmin about this?

I sent them something a couple weeks ago and this was the dialog:
Me:
I've had both Garmin Mobile 10 as well as Garmin Mobile XT and both are
resetting my system clock on my phone to 7pm, 5 days ago. Very
frustrating because every time I go to use Garmin, I have to reset the
system time.
I'm running:
Garmin Mobile XT 4.10.40wp
Window Mobile 6 Professional CE OS 5.2.1622
any ideas? Thanks
Them:
Thank you for contacting Garmin International.
This is the first that we have heard of the Garmin software resetting
the date and time in a Cell phone. They are typically updated by the
Cell towers of the phone provider. If this device also has a built in
gps, it may be resetting your date and time.
I recommend contacting the manufacturer of the phone to make sure it is
completely up to date.
If you continue to experience this issue, feel free to call our 800
number listed below for more information.
With Best Regards,
Anthony L
I'm still hoping that the official ROM will fix this. I didn't have this problem when I was using an external GPS receiver. I have a friend who has a Tilt using Garmin XT and her time does not reset.
This leads me to believe the problem lies within the pre-release ROM that opened up the internal GPS for my Mogul. I know all signs are pointing to Garmin but I haven't been convinced that it isn't the new ROM that's the culprit. If you know it's the Garmin software, please explain to me how it is so I can move on in life. =)

oops, you are right. i use gps viewer to get a fix first and then close out of that and open garmin xt up. kind of a pita. ive got a garmin standalone and im used to that interface. i still might switch to tomtom but i would like to see an official radio release first

I have the same problem with Garmin using internal gps.
I'm using DCD's 2.0.0, which is wm6.
It resets my clock to 4pm, but then resets back to the correct time usually within a half hour.
Since using the internal gps with Garmin requires a hack, maybe it's related to this.
I also use TomTom 6 and Sprint Nav, and don't have this problem with either of those programs.
Garmin has better graphics though..

I'd like to 2nd, 3rd, whatever the issue with garmin xt using the internal gps and resetting / changing the time.
very annoying... however garmin is simply so much better than tomtom that I will suffer through it until I can find a workaround.

I checked Garmin's site last night just to see if they had any new updates and came across this:
Garmin Mobile XT for Windows Mobile Ver. 4.20.20w as of Feb 26, 2008 Download.
On their initial software update page, it says last update for Garmin Mobile XT for Smartphones was November 14, 2007. But if you click on the link you see more recent updates.
I downloaded and installed it. I've soft resetted and booted up Garmin without booting up any helper GPS app (instantGPS, GPSViewer) and my time hasn't changed since I installed this version. I've been using it all morning and it hasn't changed once.
I'm running:
ROM version 3.16.651.0
Garmin 4.20.20wp
my time isn't changing =)

That update fixed my time issue as well. I also seem to get more SATs much faster. I soft reset my phone and fired up Garmin. I instantly had a lock on 8 SATs. Nice find.

I tried this new version today. My clock still changes before I get a fix (no bars in the GPS strength meter in the main menu), but it does re-update to the correct time after it gets a fix. Better than before, but problem NOT solved.

GPS on WM6 What I am doing wrong?

Hey all,
I have my athena for a couple of days now but I still can't get the GPS to position. As it is a T-mobile Ameo I used Oprio's Unlocker first. Everything went fine and now I can use it with every SIM. Then I upgraded with the WM6 Dopod U1000 and so far so good. The only thing that worries me is that I can't get the GPS to work. I tried both OziExplorer and Googlemaps, also BeelineGPS and GPSTuner. None of these programs can find a satellite and obtain a position. Am I missing some settings or maybe there are no satelites over my area?
OPp and something else that bothers me. Is the Status Display just not working under WM6 or it's only by me so?
I have the x7500/Advantage and GPS works after updating to WM6. I haven't yet unlocked my phone because i'm waiting for the cooked ROM's to be released before I go through this.
Have you installed maybe some other software that uses GPS and see what happens or are you trying it with just one program?
have you changed the gps settings in start-settings-system-external gps?
I use software-none hardware-5 baud-9600 tick-manage auto.
run quickgps first before you try any of your programmes, and let it update, this will give your progs satellites to look for and speed things up a bit, it does take some time to get a fix.
you haven't tried selecting it as a sirf-star have you? that will stop it working and need the battery leaving out for a while..

yep I tried both COM5 and COM4 with 4800/9600, also ran the QuickGPS.
What do you mean by selecting it as a sirf-star?
some software (for example memory map navigator) gives you the option to select different types of gps receiver protocols, there are a few. garmin, navman, magelan, sirf, nmea,
nmea is what the 7500 uses, but if you select sirf-star then it appears the gps shuts down, and the best way of restoring it at present is to either take the battery out or if you're lucky just hard reset it.
I did this
No, I haven't selected sirf. Is there some simple GPS software just to try whether the integrated GPS is working? Could it be just that there are no satellites over my area?
Come on guys, tell me how you get your GPS to work. Should I go back to WM5 or maybe change the Radio ROM? All the programs I tried still can't find any satellites? Any suggestions for other settings?

I don't have an answer for you, but I can tell you that the GPS satellite system covers the whole planet, so there are some over your area. Sounds like it could be a hardware problem.
Hmm I know but althoufh I am in the city centre it shout find at least 1-2 satellites. Maybe I should go somewhere out of the city and try there. I still doubt that there's something wrong with the settings or the software.
i had the same problem, using AMEO, unlocked using olipro unlocker.. GPS never worked afterwords .. the SIRFbootloader section in the ROM isn't updatable getting a communication error and that is it. I've to return it to T-mobile.. don't know how to remove the Olipro bootloader and how i can get back the original T-mobile rom!
Hope your problem is fixable .. as mine isn't

I did upgrade to Olipro, but I have bever seen any communcation errors. As far as I can tell, every upgrade went fine. My GPS works in 2% of the cases, it takes forever to get a fix, and after even the slightest displacement or move, the fix is gone again.
I am not getting any communications errors. I did all all the settungs as shown on this site http://www.x7501.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1184315093/0
and f.e on Google maps it just shows "Seeking GOS satellites (0)"
On the BeelineGPS I get "Fix not available" and a red circle blinks.
I really don't know what to try more. Maybe should I flash another Radio ROM or get back to WM 5.0? Any other suggestions?
mine too after upgrading to WM6, my quickGPS is not able to download the satellite data via Activesync. i used to be able to do so on WM5... whats wrong?
try this!!
Unplug battery then plug it again, this will help your mobile like factory reset !
lucky

For tests I am using old small app which was fro PPC2003. It works fine with my Advantage X7500 on Com4 and 4800 baud rate in WM6. It usualy starts showing satelites after 1 minute or so.
I have attached it here.
Edit:
I never tried to use quickGPS via ActiveSync. I use vsta. However it works fine and downloads GPS inf via WLAN/GPRS/UMTS or what is actualy available.
Did you do step 2 and three of Olipro Unlock
Step 2 Sends A Radio Rom to Unlock and step 3 a Rom tha make your GPS work again
It says so in the Olipro Unlock Documentation

GPS Hell

I've read just about every GPS related post on this board, and I haven't found a solution.
I've got a Verizon XV6800 with DCD 3.2.3 (also tried 3.2.2) Radio version 3.42.30 (also tried 3.39.10 and 3.42.02) with Bootloader 2.47 (also tried 2.40). I've done the titan GPS fix. I have never gotten a GPS lock on even one satellite! I've tried this in the middle of a parking lot on a clear day while standing outside my car for 30 minutes.
I'm looking at GPSViewer (holux) and it sometimes shows satellites (not locked; in red) but after about a minute that disappears and I get nothing. The Satellite's always show over the N on the "GPS Status" page. GoogleMaps never shows a satellite only "Searching for Satellites (0)..."
Now I've just noticed that I'm indoors (in the middle of a building) and GPSViewer still occasionally shows a satellite (in red) and then it disappears.
I've tried the *228,2 and the *22899, I've flashed the radio rom with bootloader 2.40 and 2.47.
Can anyone think of anything else to try? Is it just me?
Thanks in advance.

is Location set to 'On'?
External GPS Settings to COM 4 and Baud 4800?
GPS Settings correct in Google Maps?
Sorry, my mistake for not mentioning that.
Yes, Location is on. And Com4, 4800.
Googlemaps is setup to use the Windows GPS (Start->programs->External GPS)
are you positive you did the GPS fix correctly? if you open that port in QPST again and read from phone, are call the gpsOne settings as they were when you applied the fix?
Yep, all nine boxes are checked and when I closed the QPST and opened again, did the re-read and sure enough all 9 boxes are still checked.

reflash dcd 2.3.3.
install carrier cab
reflash radio
check all settings
*228 2

theres no reason why that shouldnt work for you. if it doesnt, then there is a hardware issue.
something else you may wanna try is using COM 5 instead of 4. its a long shot, but on my first 6800 the GPS was on COM 5 for some reason.
First, did you follow this link here to the letter?
If so, did you try using HTC GPS tool like GC states here?
Com4/baud rate 4800/Clear Memory
Click Open, then click Nav. Init.
Then you need to wait for three or more red bars, then open the GPS program of your choice.
121, I attached the tool for you as well.
I did not try the HTC GPS tool, but the link you gave me goes to like 261 posts. I've read through most of them before, and followed #1 (I didn't download the third tool, the launcher, because I'm trying to use Google Maps, not TomTom).
Just tried the GPS tool and it doesn't seem to do much better. I see satellites for a little while but they don't lock.

Did you follow my instructions on how to lock with QuickGPS and GPS Tool?
My phone's acting very similar the sat's will be red and it'll take up to 30 mins to get a lock. The htc gps tool made it a lock a couple minutes faster but live search would take forever to start with gps tool running. taking 20 mins to lock makes it almost worthless. You should reflash and leave it running in your car or something for a hour and maybe you'll get a lock.
Hmm maybe I should make a youtube video of exactly what I do...because I'm noticing no issues.
I did try your instructions. Got two half full red bars, then they disappeared, never to return. The Information screen never populated with GPS location info and stayed in Mode 2, No position information for the whole time.
I will try shield's recommendation.
where are you located?
I'm still getting used to using mine but I'm wondering if the differences users see are the individual phones or the locations they are using them in. I bought a VX6800 a few weeks back and discovered these forums about a week later. I flashed my phone this past weekend (Olipro 2.40, Radio 3.42.30, and DCD 3.2.3). I then installed HTC GPS tool and Tom Tom 7 to start my experimenting.
My first test was HTC GPS tool in my back yard. It started picking up satellites after about a minute..then did red bars...then green bars..maybe two minutes total. I closed the tool and launched Tom Tom and it had satellites and was ready to go in about a minute.
Yesterday I launched Tom Tom in my driveway (front of the house ) before I left for work and it had a lock in the time it took me to enter in a POI for the train station. It guided me to the station and displayed accurate location and vehicle speed the whole way there.
When I got back to the station after work I launched Tom Tom to test it again on the way home. I waited a minute and it didn't lock so I started driving. I got halfway home with no lock so I closed Tom Tom and launched HTC GPS tool. It locked after a while and I launched Tom Tom which was then ready to go for the last leg of the trip.
This morning when I got in the car I launched Tom Tom directly again and it had a lock before I put in my POI, just like yesterday. I'm going to try again when I get back to the train station tonight.
I haven't reset or turned off my phone since I finished all of the flashing and installing this weekend. I'm curious if the GPS remembers the last satellites it saw or if I just have easy locking in front of my house and crappy signal down at the train station. As I get more into this I'll look into QuickGPS. I've also seen at least two threads mentioning reflashing the radio after flashing the ROM and setting up the carrier...I'm wondering if this helps as well and may give it a shot next weekend as I continue tinkering.

you should just soft reset your phone. more than likely the COM port is just locked up and needs to be released before it will work again. you should prime TT7 with GPS Tool or Google Maps to save yourself time. don't worry about any reflashing yet it sounds like you have everything already running correctly. just soft reset and try to lock with GPS Tool or another primer. when you close out any GPS apps, make sure you turn off the gps in the application then close it properly to help keep the COM port open. if you put your phone in standby while a GPS app is running or close the app with GPS still running, it could lock it up which needs a soft reset.
I use GC process and found it works for me. But as a Sys Tech Engineer I have found identical equipment does not all behave the same...
I do the GPS Tool, wait for 3-bars, Goolge maps, etc...and I get a lock. HOWEVER, I do a bit more. Seeing that this is Windows crappy OS I start with a full power down & up each day. Then I do the quick GPS to get updated GPS info (make sure you have a data connection going...ie open Explorer first then close it). Then I follow GC step exactly in another post as I stated above...connect. Sometimes it is about a minute or less but no more than 3-4.
Now I am very confident this works as GC tells us with the newest rom & radio. I am on rom 3.22 radio 3.42.30... I found for ME...I said ME and my area radio 3.39 (I downgraded to this one recently) gave me better results although his newer radio IS MUCH better than 3.39...as I stated before all devices look identical but they do not all behave the same..
The very last time I used it (this morning) I had almost instant lock with no primining; just launching Tom Tom. I'm not trying to troubleshoot anything at this point just experimenting and comparing experiences. If I don't get a quick lock when I get back to the train station tonight I will probably set it up to follow gc14's method tomorrow night and compare the results.
I don't know if I'll wind up adding anything valuable to this thread or not but when I'm looking to do this stuff for the first time I like to read as many details about other people's experiences as I can. I have a feeling in the long run I'll wind up using gc14's method as long as I get the same results.
Brooklyn, NY (NYC)
This is what I do to get a lock:
* Soft reset
* Connect to Internet
* Update QuickGPS
* Run HTC GPS Tool (Open port)
I do that or I never get a lock.
I have an XV6800, DCD 3.2.3, radio 3.42.30, and no priming software. I use google maps alone and get a lock usually within a minute.
I helped set up a friends XV6800 the same way, using the identical files (ROM, Radio, carrier cab, etc...) and he has the worst lock times. He can go days without ever succeeding in locking sattelites using google maps.
I would be willing to bet the devices are from different production runs and have one atom off in the chipset somewhere and that is the difference.
Thats totally a rant on my part, I doubt that is the actual case, but I notice occaisionally activesync pops up and stops my GPS from working. As soon as I close active sync and go to google maps and uncheck "use gps" and check it again it starts working again. I am probably crazy but so far that seems to be the only thing stopping my device from locking gps when active.
I am not very smart, but if the same files do not work on the same type, brand, etc.. phone then i would have to say that it must be some kind of small hardware issue.

Alltel Touch Pro and GPS - are there issues?

Hey guys,
Can you tell me if there is an "issue" with the GPS on the Alltel Touch Pro phones? These are fairly new phones and have only been out for a couple weeks so there may not be a lot of info available but it sure seems to me there are some issues here.
I'm on my 3rd phone. First phone was probably OK but since it was new and nobody in the area was familiar with it, everyone thought the speakerphone speaker was defective... turns out it just sucks but that's in a different thread. On the 2nd phone we noticed at the Alltel store the signal kept dropping out completely and then coming back. Also I dropped a call, looked at the phone and it showed no bars in a very good signal reception area. That coupled with I couldn't get the GPS to reliably work, Alltel swapped out the phone again for me thinking the GPS was defective. Well, third one might be worse!!!???
I have verified I have the 911 location settings turned ON.
I have run QuickGPS and downloaded the data.
On the 2nd phone after several days of trying it off and on and having zero success I decided to get the $9.99 monthly Alltel app. It did indicate a weak signal but eventually picked up my location. Hmm??? I then went into Google Maps and it too was seeing around 10 satellites. Why could I not get it to see any satellites for days then as soon as I paid for the monthly Alltel app it "kinda" worked??? I say "kinda" because after that being able to lock onto satellites even in an open field was very iffy. So, I took the Alltel GPS app off the phone and did a hard reset because I still couldn't consistently get any satellites. After the hard reset I tried again with Google Maps and nothing. I then downloaded GPS Test and it immediately found several satellites??? I then started up Google Maps and then it immediately started working too?!? During all this I installed TomTom Navigator 5 (own that so thought I'd try it) and it too was "iffy" if it would find any satellites but it did connect so long as I had the GPS Test program running in the background. I could live with that but even with the GPS Test program running in the background on the 2nd phone it wasn't at all consistent even outside in an open field. What I find odd though is that the GPS seems to "stick" and the GPS Test program was "unsticking" the locked up GPS... but not reliably.
Now for the 3rd phone. Get the 3rd phone this morning and immediately download Google Maps, turn on location settings, and do the Quick GPS. Do a soft reset and try out Google Maps in a parking lot. NOTHING again after over 10 minutes. CRAP! Downloaded GPS Test and now on this phone I'm only getting "GPS starting up" with one yellow bar. I can't even get GPS Test to work now but it finds the GPS and acts like it is trying to lock on to satellites. On both phones it was defaulting to 9600 baud. Seemed to not make a difference if I select 9600 or 4800... when it works it works and when it doesn't it doesn't.
This is very frustrating. It is not like the programs don't work because I've got them all to work but only sporadically. Is Alltel doing "something" to this phone and the GPS like "half assed" locking it out??? I don't know what else it could be. Could I have got two bad phones in a row? I've read were other Alltel users just download Google Maps and, bingo, works immediately for them.
Any ideas as to what I might be able to try would be greatly appreciated. I love some of the features on the phone but some of the basic items that should work (speakerphone, GPS) on an expensive phone like this don't work worth a darn
Thanks!!!
Drop the Alltel Nav plan...you don't need it. All it did was set your GPS settings to work, which you can do in the settings. Set GPS Hardware Port GPS and GPS Program Port both to none. Set Baud at 4800 and allow automatic managment. Soft Reset just in case and you should be good to go!

I only had the Alltel Nav plan for a couple of days... only got it for troubleshooting.
I had tried your settings before and both Google Maps and GPS Test could not even find the GPS. I just tried again and same results... GPS just keeps scanning for the GPS and can never find it. You have an Alltel phone?
The setting that you recommend me changing away from the default setting is the GPS Program Port... if that is set to NONE, the programs can't even find the GPS. When I change it back to COM4, the GPS is found but GPS Test sits at "GPS Starting Up" with either no satellites found or just one most of the time. I did the other day get it to work even on this new phone but then yesterday tried again for 20 minutes sitting still outside and the best I got GPS Test to show was 4 satellites... not even enough to get past the "starting up" message.
It seems like it is defective again but, man, TWO phones in a row with a bad GPS?????
So last night after replying to this thread, I was messing around with the new google maps. This morning...NOTHING works with my GPS. Perhaps the download of alltel nav (although canceled) activated the GPS on my phone for a specified time and now the sub ended. I was sold on this phone by Alltel reps because the GPS was not locked to an app.

Well, after screwing around yesterday like I did, I decided to just let it set in my garage (with many sky lights) this morning for a few hours with the GPS Test program running and looking for satellites. NOTHING. Did a soft reset, went outside, started up the GPS Test program and within 5 seconds was locked on to 10 satellites!?!?! I could swear I've done soft resets before and it did no good. Will try a soft reset again if it quits working on me. Also, I'm inside the house now in a room with ZERO windows and it is still seeing 7 satellites. I suspect there is an issue with GPS on this phone but because it seems very "flaky" I'd think a software update may be able to fix it... hope so anyway!
You might want to try a soft reset and see if that works for ya?
I also talked to a smart phone expert guy and he said it doesn't hurt to do the Quick GPS DAILY. He has found that on many phones running a program like this daily helps the phone to connect much quicker. FWIW, I didn't run it today and after the reset it connected in seconds. LOL
Ok, so I tried running Quick GPS and I get an error "Connection Failed". Perhaps this is somehow related to the GPS issue? I will keep trying throughout the day.

I only ever got that when my 911 location setting was turned OFF when I first got the phone. Turned that on and it worked no problem. Also, of course, you have to be able to get your data connection established. With a data connection and your location settings ON, I don't know why you'd have a problem.
GPS no worky right for me......
Finally someone with a thread for this issue! I too am having the exact same problem. The GPS is very "flaky" at best.... I have had it work sporadically at best in the car and will drop it for no reason and the pick it right back up and then go out for good. I dont really understand what to do, it is all quite a mystery. I have manipulated the settings back and forth trying diffent things to no avail. I hope there is an update soon that straightens this out. It annoys me becasue my old titan got signal in about 10 seconds, 10 satellites, indoors, in any part of my house.... just a bit frustrating. Hopefully we get a fix soon.
Thanks for any advice on this!

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!
This was driving me nuts! Now not only does quickGPS work, so does google maps I remember now changing that setting last night. Who knew?

After messing with this a bit more, I think there is definitely an issue with the Alltel version of this phone and the GPS. It seems that if I can't get it to work, it WILL work after I do a soft reset. What triggers the "need" to do a soft reset I have not yet figured out. But, I do know that I saw a friend who just got a Sprint HTC Touch Pro and had no idea about the GPS. I downloaded Google Maps on their phone and in less than 5 seconds the GPS was working like a charm.
Looks like the Alltel GPS works but is very sporadic at best and, for whatever reason, requires a soft reset damn near each time you want to use it. Hoping for a real "fix" for this soon!
and how do i change the 911 location settings
The 911 settings are located in the settings for the phone. START->SETTINGS->PHONE then click the Services tab and it is under the Location Setting.

Ok here is something that may be contributing to my problem. So i have double and triple checked the my location check and looked at the option which has always read "on". the strange thin is that the icon on the phone dialer screen shows my location feature is set to off. I have gone back to check the location setting and verified it was on. So i selected off then back on and then the icon reflected it was "on". I have tried soft resets after doing this and it goes right back to the way it was before I force it on. I am now hinking this is what is contributing to the flaky response of the gps. just wondering if anyone else has had this problem.....

Which icon are you talking about? I looked through the online pdf manual and could find no icon that indicated this setting was on or off
Also, while a soft reset sometimes works for this, it doesn't all the time. What has saved me time in this, though, is that I've learned that if it doesn't connect in under a minute, it ain't going to. Mine either works pretty much right away or doesn't work at all. It does seem to help to start up GPS Test first but that doesn't always work either.
After reading a bit more about this on other forums, it doesn't look to be related specifically to the Alltel version like I originally assumed. A number of people with other carriers are also experiencing "flaky" operation of the HTC Touch Pro GPS. The very sad part about this is that, apparently, HTC refuses to acknowledge a problem exists.
Would be nice to know if this is a software/driver issue or hardware issue. If a hardware issue then I'll be stuck using an external receiver most likely. Software, I can hold out hope that somebody will get it figured out!
the icon i am referring to is on you phone dialer. it is a circle that resembles a set of crosshairs. when the location feature is on, you will see the crosshairs. when the setting is off the crosshairs have a diagonal line through them. i am using my phone to send this so i cant attach any pictures right now. the icon is right next to the back arrow at the top of the dialer where the number you dial is shown.
update... spent 30 minutes with alltel smartphone support and they had no solution other than saying they would send this to the group that reports issues to htc to work on a solution. they did offer me to return it but i like this phone too much. i am
sure we will figure it out soon enough.

Ahh... I see that now and amazingly enough, mine has a line through it. I'll check that next time I can get the GPS to work and see if it changes.
Like you, I really like the phone but it greatly aggravates me that something so expensive doesn't work, as designed, out of the box.
I have had 3 alltel TP phones and all of them once 911 and location was set to on and quick gps was run once then they always got instant locks of 10 satellites. On my mogul the best i would ever get would be 4-6 satellites. Google & Live search use the intermediate driver with default settings with no lag and Iguidance (which is the best voiceprompt gps software) works with no lag when using Franson GPS gate as a virtual com port for the GPS driver.

If you go to your phone dialer, is there a "line" through the crosshair/circle icon?
I haven't been able to get a lock for couple days now. Bummer. I'm going to call Alltel tech support again and see what they say.
Ok, after not even beeing able to get more than a couple satellites being shown in GPS Test which means nothing more than a GPS Starting message, I decided to call tech support to see if they had documented any other issues with the phone since I last contacted them. I was told there are NO known issues with the Touch Pro (not even the problem with the speakerphone or the previously reported GPS issues).
After talking with tech support and they guy telling me that they get a number of calls for "other" GPS software programs but not too many for the Alltel Navagation program that they offer, he told me he can't help me with the other programs and I should contact their vendors. I tried to explain to him that one was a simple GPS Test program and the other was Google Maps but he kept saying that they don't really have problems with "their" GPS subscription program.
Being basically fed up and figuring it was worth the $10 to continue to troubleshoot this problem, I downloaded the Alltel Navagation program again. And guess what... IT WORKED. Guess what else... when I had the Alltel Navagation program working, GPS Test and Google Maps work fine too and I'm even inside a large building right now!!!
Does anybody have any "inside" on what is going on here? I know a number of Alltel people say the GPS on their Touch Pro works just fine using something like Google Maps. On mine, it "sometimes" works. I find it VERY odd that on my last Touch Pro phone I NEVER got even a single satellite to show until I downloaded the Alltel pay program. Now, with this phone, after struggling with it a bit I can "sometimes" get it to work but haven't been able to for a couple days, even after numerous soft resets but now, immediately after activating and running the Alltel program, my GPS starting working just peachy and even inside a large building!?!? I've got a full 5 bars in the Alltel GPS program inside. WHAT GIVES???
I'm going to pay for this Alltel program for a few days and see if I can consistently get a lock. If so, I'd sure like to know why the phone's GPS magically gets "better" so long as you pay for their service

I am using the regular windows dialer and yes there is a line through the circle/crosshair.
I just went outside and launched Gpsgate/Iguidance and had 10 sattelites instantly, it has been at least a week since I have drove and used the GPS, but I use it all the time with no problems or lag. Inside I almost instantly get 6-7 sats. using Google maps or livesearch without GPS gate, only the MS intermediate driver I get instant locks as well. I ran quick GPS once about a month ago on this unit.

Suddenly no GPS device

I have been using TomTom 7 with GPSGate and Copilot 8 no problem until this evening. Used it this morning going to work but now apps cannot find GPS device? GPSGate shows no incoming. Any ideas?

GPS has worked since I got the phone in December and was working great this morning. I don't think GPSGate is the problem as google maps can't find the GPS device either. I tried the internal GPS settings and tried to download GPS data but the message is "failed to save downloaded GPS data". Last download date was 01/01/10 so I don't think that's the problem either since GPS was working up until today..
But...the last GPS app I did use was Next2Me which I installed from XDA Dev. a couple of days ago, I wonder if that messed things up?
Check the external gps settings of your device if same port is there(in case you know the previous, by default is gpd9).
If not, you have 2 possibilities(because the last app you used may have ''take advantage'' of your gps port vs. other gps apps):
1.soft reset;
or
2.set gpsgate to find your gps port again.
Cheers!
PS Let me know about....
Finally did a hard reset (master clear) and GPS works again. Wondering now whether to reinstall SPB Mobile Shell 3.5 or try out HTC Sense...
If you had SPB Mobile Shell 3.5 installed - make sure that you didn't accidentally turn off the 'Phone Mode' - without this active, the GPS will not work.
Hi, I had same problem recently. The gpsgate started to show no incoming data. Had to hard reset to get gps working again. Was caused by installing cf .net 3.5, I have confirmed this as I re-installed .net 3.5 and had same problem.

GPS/Com port/Igo 8 problem

When running GPS apps the phone is fine (eg Google maps, Tomtom) but once Igo has been used all other apps fail to find the GPS untill a restart (as though it locks down the GPS to itself), this is with official and custom roms, also the likes of GPS gate. The same install of GMaps and Igo however work fine on my womans HD2 :/ anyone else witnessed this or have a cure for it?
Same problem here!
It took me half a day to get to the bottom of this. I installed iGO8 on my recently purchased TG01 and it would not find the GPS.
Obviously, lots of people are having the very same problem.
Solutions include using GPSGate, gpsplex or GPSModDriver. Those all seem to work with some people - or not.
I finally managed to get a GPS-signal WITHOUT any of these solutions!
By simply adding this to the SYS.TXT:
[gps]
source="virtserial"
When I tried it at first, iGO8 would crash back to the today screen! OK, second try, same result. AFTER I did a soft reset (for a different reason) and restarted iGO8 it suddenly worked (for the first time)! Hmm.
Once I started iGO8 a second time it would crash again. IF I deleted the [gps]-command it would start properly again - without any GPS-reception of course. Exiting, than putting the lines back in would also crash iGO8!
BUT if if unhooked the GPS-reception in the iGO8-settings, exited iGO8, inserted the [gps]-command in SYS.TXT and then started iGO8, it would work again!
After a while I figured out that a simple soft reset is also sufficient. Still a hassle, but not the end of the world.
Let's see if someone finds a more elegant solution!

Thanks for the replies, but with both,
[gps]
source="virtserial"
and GPS gate I still have other GPS software fail to find the GPS device after using Igo (though mine doesn't crash out on multiple runs) Tomtom, Gmaps etc all live happily next to each other, though GPS Gate is needed for Tomtom, and as said the same software taken straight from my phone and placed on the partners HD2 doesn't suffer the same problem. I also am running atm FFBoys custom rom and that allows me to change the default port the GPS device is found on so no more com9 issues are suffered either, and the rteset is a pain especially infront of dodgy iPhone users
Try this and most if not all gps soft should work without gates and stuff. Never liked that proggie anyway. Neither did i like the idea of secondary prog running behind. Phone does not need any help, it can manage on its own

Thanks for the effort, but GpsModDriver does not work for me! Although it will allow iGO8 to detect a GPS-receiver at the proper port, there is no reception!

Hmm this shouldn't be. No reception at all? This sounds like the disconnection problems i used to have, eg finding satellites and receiving data and after a minute or so suddenly red icon and no data downloaded. Or another scenario finding satellites normally during the first run and after exiting igo and then loading it again it wouldn't receive data. I had problems of gps disconnections with stock rom and also with radio 5005.1600 and i had to reset my phone to get signal again. Realy annoying and led me to assume that i had a defective phone. That was not the case. First of all that problem appeared while in gsm mode but when i turned to 3g signal was steady and never lost it. Now after having tried several different radios i have found one that suits me with great call sound quality, another problem with the stock rom, and also gps signal wthout disconnections in both gsm and 3g mode.
Have you tried switching to another radio and do your tests? I don't know the radio your current rom uses but if it's the 1600 it has gps disconnection problems. Also try a cr***ed version of igo to see if this happens. I also have the program in an original sd card but i cannot be limited to the small capacity of the 2gb card and unfortunately i cannot copy the original card to a bigger capacity card either because it's protected. So i chose to use a *** version, though i don't consider myself a pirate

As I said: if I install GPSModDriver instead of using the [gps]-command in the SYS.TXT I can set the COM-port and iGO8 will detect a GPS-receiver there. But that's all. It will blink green and pick up no satellites. And trust me, I waited 30 minutes just to make sure! Once I switched back and put [gps] back into SYS.TXT it worked at once!

I haven't done too much testing yet, since I'm still using my old navigation system. But over the weekend I will try and see if the current configuration works properly over a longer period of time.
Or another scenario finding satellites normally during the first run and after exiting igo and then loading it again it wouldn't receive data.

If I restart iGO8 without a soft reset in between it will always crash back to the today screen after loading to the cockpit screen. Worse, if I try that several times it may enter a "death cycle" where iGO8 restarts over and over again until I press and hold the on/off-button for the TG01 to shut down.
Interestingly in the short time span where iGO8 is completely loaded you CAN see the yellow spots on the GPS-detection (cockpit screen) which means that it picks up satellites! But the next second it will freeze, crash and then overwrite the graphics onscreen with the today screen. An error log would maybe help here.
and led me to assume that i had a defective phone.

My TG01 is a used one but from a reliable trader. So, I don't think that it is the smartphone itself but a problem involving either the software or the driver/driver support.
Have you tried switching to another radio and do your tests?

Not yet! I switched back to an official ROM released by Toshiba after I concluded that maybe there was a problem, but the errors/solutions remain exactly the same.
Since I'm not the biggest fan of their pre-installed software package, I switched back again to "pure" WM 6.5 provided by Nokser.
I don't know the radio your current rom uses but if it's the 1600 it has gps disconnection problems.

I'm using: Radio Version: v.5005.1700.05
Also try a cr***ed version of igo to see if this happens.

Since I own two legally purchased licenses of iGO8 (1x PDA, 1x PNA) I'm always doing a bit of "beta testing".
Same results! The 8.32.x version I tried actually behaved even worse than the 8.34.x version I've been using for some time now!
So i chose to use a *** version, though i don't consider myself a pirate

To the heroic "pirate hunters" out there we're already "pirates" because we talk on this forum and dare to do stuff with (and to) our hardware (and software) that we're not allowed AND supposed to.
Hell, even attempting to flash another ROM onto this device will cancel any warranty!

Testing complete!
Today, I took the TG01 with iGO8 out for some testing!
Setup:
- Ultra ProEdition WM ® CE OS 5.2 23569 - Build 23569[20/06/2010][GERMAN] (by Nokser)
- Radio Version: v.5005.1700.05
- iGO8 8.3.4.142975 (May 11 2010)
- no gpsmodriver or other similar software/driver installed
- SYS.TXT with [gps]-command added
And here are the results:
- Within city limits the GPS-reception worked perfectly! Fast, strong and responsive. I tested it for about 30-45 minutes. No glitches, no hang-ups. TMC-support was provided by an external bluetooth device.
- Once entering the motorway and speeding up the GPS-signal was lost within 20 minutes - at a speed of about 120-150 km/h. It did not re-establish and after awhile iGO8 even lost the GPS-receiver itself - red light blinking! When I restarted iGO8 (without a soft reset) it would find the GPS-receiver and satellites again for about 20-30 seconds, than crash back to the today screen.
- After a soft reset and at high speed (150km/h) on the motorway iGO8 would find the satellites again than lose them after about 30-60 seconds. Same behaviour as above.
- Returning within the city limits and after a soft reset, everything worked just fine again until the very end of the trip (another 30 minutes).
_______________
Additional testing during the trip:
I also have an external GPS-mouse (bluetooth) which I connected it to the TG01, removed the [gps]-command from SYS.TXT and started iGO8. No problems here!
Same during any part of the trip - perfect GPS-reception, no glitches or hang-ups.
______________________
Conclusion:
Either the device itself has a problem with continuous GPS-reception (e.g. the radio and/or its driver) - which should be tested with other softwares to provide some more conclusive data. Or iGO8 and the support for TG01's GPS-receiver is the culprit to blame!
Regards!
While all help is appreciated, the main issue that I have is not the running of Igo, it is after using and exiting it that no other program can use the GPS! A soft reset cures that, but still it seems to be Igo holding onto the port some how and denying everything else access to it, be it Tomtom, Google maps, GPSGate etc on official and cooked roms.

We have a common goal! If someone finds out what's causing iGO8's behaviour there may be a fix around that helps both of us.

I've been 11 months using IGO +GPSGate without no hangs at all.
By the way (perhaps out threat but interest me) could you explain how do you provide TMC-suport?
Thank you!

I'm already wondering what kind of driver GPSGate provides in this case that makes running GPS-dependent software so obviously less problematic than the standard WM-setup!

I actually have two options for TMC-support! First of all an external GPS-mouse (bluetooth) that comes with a TMC-receiver integrated. It's the Royaltek RTG-2000. I got it new for 25 Euros quid from eBay. Reception is very good (in both cases)! There are only two disadvantages: 1. It uses a plugin antenna (wire aerial) for TMC-reception you have to setup every time you use it first. 2. The proprietary (and rather hard to change) accu it comes with is only 650mA which means it doesn't last very long without recharging!
The other is option is also bluetooth-based and directly connected to my car radio. It's called Navilock TMC Y-Adapter. This one's a bit more elegant, since it's directly wired to the car radio's antenna and power supply and thus disappears completely and doesn't need any extra setup. It's also much more expensive at 55-65 Euros. But the TMC-reception is excellent and it works like a charm. Well, ok, iGO8 3.2x versions will not be able to detect it, and I have to use version 3.4x instead!
Regards!
Did some testing with GPSGate today as more and more people recommend it to me.
When I installed it last time the GPS-receiver picked up no satellites at all - even after a wait of up to 30 minutes and under open sky!
This time there were no problems at all. Maybe this has something to do with Nokser's WM-build or the radio version. No idea yet.
Step by step:
- installed GPSGate with GPS-receiver pointed to COM 2
- removed [gps]-command from SYS.TXT
- started iGO8 and pointed GPS-receiver to COM 2
- GPS-receiver was detected, satellites were found
- restarted iGO8 to see if hangups/crashed would occur, but no problems there
Every time I restart it will work properly.
The only thing I have to test yet is how it behaves over a longer period, outside the city and at higher speeds!
Conclusion:
Looks like iGO8 is responsible for the troubles and this should be pointed out to Nav'N'Go ASAP so that they can do something about it!
In the meantime, using GPSGate seems to be an ok-solution and it's really not too expensive if other problems with GPS-detection/reception are also fixed by it.

Yes, but try using Google maps or Tomtom after Igo.

Let me get this straight: Even with GPSGate installed and running, only iGO8 will "lock" the GPS-serial once you used it? If you use e.g. the combination of TomTom, Google Maps and iGO8 - in that order- it will work? But if you start and use iGO8 first, the other two won't without restarting the phone?
Hm. Interesting. But also pointing again towards iGO8 as the culprit for the problem!

Yes! GPS programs work happily all day long one after another (the ones I use anyway), once Igo8 has been used nothing else will work again till a reset (though Igo8 will continue to work).
2 things of note, I am currently running IGO8 Ver 8.3.2.124260 (Dec 16 2009), does anyone know where to get the latest *cough* version for testing reasons?
Secondly no matter what port I set IGO to (1 to 9) IGO finds the GPS on everyone of them!.....??
So is it the phone or the IGO version at fault?

GPSGate allows to use two or three (even more depending the memory usage) GPS dependent software AT THE SAME TIME. For instance you can use Igo and grab your itinerary on COMPE GPS simultaneously!!
(Remark: I'm not a GPS Gate employee )
Best Regards
