Are these any good? - HTC Startrek

I have not had a smartphone before, but with the recent price drop at expansys.com, I thought it looked quite attractive.
I currently run an XDA Exec, so I'm not looking for competition, just something that can pull my email and is small enough for a night out.
How do these cope as a day to day device?
Bummer not having 3G, so how easy is it to do email and a little browsing now and then.
I will look for some reviews, but I value the real life experience from the xda-dev populace
tia
Mav

I had an Exec then an Athena and due to the price I bought one of these. I love it!
Works fine with Push email and some light browsing - not got all the features of a PPC but great as a phone to carry round.
Recomended!

^^^ what he said.
I use a Kaiser during the day but switch my sim to a smartflip when I dont need the data speed and keyboard.

I chopped my Blackberry Pearl in for one of these...and I loved the Pearl!!
This phone got me back into WM phones after a short stint away. Load up the NEO lite rom...its great!

Should I buy an XDA Original?

I cant afford an XDA2, but have recently been interested in the XDA, but have a few questions...
First of all, I didnt realise it had 4k colours, but how bad is it? I currently have a 65k colour screen SPV E200, so is the difference horrible? Baring in mind I will be watching videos, playing games, and using the internet on it. I know how bad my old Nokia 6100 colour screen was, and it's what's putting me off.
Secondly, I have a few problems with my E200, which if you've read anything about them, you'll know what I mean. I know the XDA is made by HTC aswell, so does it have loads of problems too?
Cheers!
They are nice machines, you can get them off e-bay for about £120 for the 32MB model, and £150 ish for the 64.
I got the 32MB for £120 sometime ago, however, I would recommend going for the 64Mb for a few quid more.
The display is only 4096 colours, but all pic viewers I've used allow dithering which makes the image look very presentable, even DivX players, more would be nicer though.
Battery life is wicked, but I guess that could be down to the faily dim backlight compared to the XDA II, and other PDA's I've used (we have them all at work, iPAQ, Tosh's, Casio's etc.) I've been on holiday for 2 weeks(left XDA @ home) and didn't lose a thing, my iPAQ would have been blanked in that time!
Be careful if you are considering installing WM2003 thats currently knocking around, as you'll get trouble if you plan on using an SD card. Two of us keep getting them erased, plus numerous folks on the net have reported similar findings.
All-in-all the XDA I is a good purchase, but don't pay a bean over £160 for the 64MB one in mint condition with case, headphones and boxes.
Happy Hunting....
Cheers for that spadb.
I'm guessing it'd be a hell of a lot worse to look at than my E200?
I have a E200 as well, checked all the info before it got released and I was like I must have this phone.............now 5 months down the road what a waste of £300, yes it has all the nice toys on it, but with all the problems it is having I wish I had spent the money on the XDA 2, anyway brought me a xda with 32meg (had a little fault on it) so I phoned the XDA center and told them the problem I was having and how much it would cost to get it fixed guess what phone is still under warranty (think all xda's have 2 years) and getting it fixed for free , lets see Orange come up with something like that!
Ah great, someone with an E200 aswell...
Would I struggle to like the XDA with the 4k colours, after using my E200?
Nope, for the 2 days I used it (off for repair at the mo) I had no problems with it, nice large screen, clear sound (oh what joy after the E200) and by far less bugs and crashes, lots more out for the xda (program wise) than for the E200, only problem I faced was trying to work out the Orange settings for the phone, the other downside was short battery life but after the E200's battery problem I can put up with it.
So a video is just as watchable as on the E200? And games are just as good? What about the internet, because I find 65k colours annoying as it is, as it isnt enough, or maybe that's down to the size of the E200's screen?
Cant give much info on using it on the net as I never got round to it, as for vid's and games just as good but on a bigger screen, when mine comes back I can give more info till then can't do much.
not wanting to hijack the thread but to just ask.
I've just bought an XDA I on e-bay. couldn't afford an XDA II either and paid £206 (incl delivery) but this one is 64mb, unlocked, boxed, brand new with a two year warranty so I think I've got a reasonable deal.
the only thing that miffs me a bit is lack of SDIO bluetooth support but it looks like the Jabra BT200 takes care of what I wanted, (handsfree with no poxy cable strangling me)
yeah, I'd say the XDA was the best buy. the only other alternative in the same price class on e-bay is the Jornada 928 which I actually owned for four hours before relisting on e-bay. don't get me wrong, lovely screen, good HP execution of features and the phone implementation was good, but it's a brick, it's bulky, it's chunky and it's dead tech with zilch support from HP so yeah, the XDA is a good buy.
there's good support, plenty of forums on it and spares. so I reckon I made the right choice.
Buy the xda, you will not regret it, if you want a demo of the video download killer bean 2.

iphone Vs. XDA ATOM

As for the performance and speed, Iphone is good. The looks also is fantastic and stylish. If you are a music lover, the ipod function w/ builtin 8gb or 4 gb storage is good enough to play your favorite songs for long time. Touch & scrolling is fantastic. So for me iphone is a simple phone, ipod & very less PDA function. Why? a lot of us is using Windows Mobile since we have PC mobile. Iphone is a OS X system, a system based from MAC OS. You can count the program that iphone have that you use before. I need Isilo but this program cant run to Iphone. The only advantage I can see is the safari browser & youtube. If you are on the wifi, browsing thru ur iphone is superb. That's it. The only main thing here is the HYPE of having an Iphone. Yet I can say that it will now give you so much headache regarding bugs except to 3rdparty program that not yet really made for iphone. To be fair, Iphone is a great phone with IPOD, period ;-) Maybe after more months, we can now enjoy a lot of program on iphone that we use to enjoy in our windows mobile.
Well About XDA ATOM (Atom Pure for me) , this is one of the goodwindows mobile i've seen. This became great because of Jiggs ROM. No more words i can say, in terms of PDA function and everything, this is great PDA Phone. There are cons but as a whole package its good. In my own opinion, its better than HTC touch. IF i compare this in IPHONE, this have a better PDA function.
So the conclusion, which one you want to buy? or which one will stay on ur palm. Its up to your needs and wants. IT's UR CHOICE, both have good side.
Thats why i have both;-) hehehe just kidding.
One of the thing about music is.. how much music can it play? I'm using Storage card, and default WMP, which gives me about 20% battery per hour. So, that is, if I have a full charge, and wanted to leave 20% of battery for the phone function, that would take me.. about 4 hours. It may be less than that because that time, I was on the train, which it gets connect/disconnect which may make it to 4.5 - 5 hours. How does the iPhone one this? Consider their 8G capacity.
However, having said, with all the functionality of WM phone, I still think the non-instant, hour-clock waiting of WM is still an issue. A lot of Palm users like to stick to Palm mainly due to the fact that Palm OS has an instant responds (most of the time).. rather than WM's short wait.

normal phone users
i think they miss t9 and maybe mms

but i think many of us like that new innovation and competition is brougth to the table to keep ms, htc and the rest on their toes
yeah, this will make other pda brand and maker be better and compete to iphone. Look out HTC, they introduce TOUCH. well having an iphone to the market benefits the consumer not only iphone users.

O2 XDA Flame Against Apple iPhone Comparison
http://www.iphoneworld.ca/iphone-editorials/2007/02/20/o2-xda-flame-against-apple-iphone-comparison/
o2 XDA flame compare to IPHONE...LOL how about our XDA atom? hehehe
O2 ATOM is better!
Form factor, O2 ATOM is actually smaller compared to the IPHONE; eventhough the IPHONE is alot slimmer.
O2 ATOM is pretty nice to hold once I put the black rubberized covers on it to protect it.
The cool things I like about the ATOM are -
1) Its on a platform that provides lots of apps to play with.
2) I like the fact that our ATOM has A2DP which allows for Stereo bluetooth headphones.
3) The Radio function is really nice to have.
4) Now with HTC Touch cube working on the ATOM, its for finger friendly than before and easier to navigate around apps, etc.
5) With the new HTC T9 Keypad, I can SMS without using my stylus anymore!
ATOM is a all-round champion for its price and features/functions!
The smooth IPhone graphics is overrated anyway. Plus there's alot of copy-cat apps that mimic the Iphone themes on PocketPC environment.
Plus I find the Iphone a little too long for my liking. ATOM is still nice to hold and comes with a pretty zippy processor!

Yeah it does look nice. the only con I can see from the specs is the 64MB SDRAM. It should have been loaded with a 128MB and it will be the godzilla of all ATOMS hehehe
some little add-ons left by MWg that was not integrated with the atom v
* a standard 3.5mm jack would be nice as well
* where's the IR? no more novII remote hehehe
Very nice...love that it has gps!
Seems it will be released in feb...I'll be getting one then
and its quite cheap! AU$839. htc touch cruise will be $1159!
Looks like it is QVGA (320x240)
thinks the Zinc II is nicer...
It be great if CPU up to 624Mhz and 1GB ROM like Atom Life and plus 128MB Ram
Love that camera is 3M Pixel
Don't know why they put gprs onto it but not increase cpu speed/ storage for big gps apps/ RAM for fast cache
Is it 520Mhz cpu perform faster or better than Atom Life??
Although i like the look of Atom Exec than Life or V
In my though
It will perfectly for me if
- CPU Better than or Equal 624MHz
- RAM >= 128MB
- ROM >= 512MB
- OS >= WM6
- GPS built in
- Camera >= 3MP (Better if 4MP or 5 MP) with better Zoom function
- Better Speaker than current Atom
- Less power comsumption (Conflict with CPU Speed) or Greater Battery
- LCD more than 2.8"
- Better HeadSet and can use with 3rd Party stereo earphone with FM enable through it
- Better Bluetooth Stack for Better music via bluetooth stereo with FM enable through it
I'm greedy ..... he he he
hehe, I like your suggestions! Also needs:
- 640x480 resolution screen
- Infared (only so I can use novii remote)

I have said I won't buy any other Atom, just look at the popularity of AtomExec and its supports that we are getting.
You sure want to go there again?
MWG stated, that the new devices are from Arima and Gigabyte and they don't longer have a partnership with Quanta and Asustek.

had an 02 Atom for 20 months now and very happy with except the IR cover fell out... kept 02 ROM updates and has been stable with very little resets (could go many months with one). As with anything that becomes popular (aka iPod) there are going to be issues. Believe they really need to get their service game in order and hopefully MWg is more than a name change and fix that ... but they are coming out with some good looking/spec devices... Zinc II, Orbit II (HTC Touch Cruise) Atom V etc... because of my experience would consider but understand others may not .... we can only base on our own experience and mine is yes would go there again

Not going to argue with you. One of my friend is very happy running with his Windows 2000 and couldn't get him moved to XP even with a gun pointing at his head. Different strokes for different folks. But, being a Computer Junkie, I can guess what majority of the people like or dislike in gadgets and very seldom err.
AtomExec is very sexy, I paid HKD5,900 for it so you can estimate the time frame. Mind you that I already had an Dopod 818, an Treo650 and an O2 xda (818pro). The logic of wanting an AtomExec is like wanting a hole in my head. Tat tells you I am an early adapter and don't mind to pay for something I like. Its screen is smaller and darker screen than I would like. But the built quality and size is perfect for my taste. I also bought a custom high capacity battery and a nice leather case for it. However, AtomExec freezes quite bit, not fast enough even with 520Mhz because I have to hang another language platform in it to use in China. The company hardly put out any updates. If they had responded to any question, the answer was usually "No' or "We have not planned for it." or similar. I am fairly sure non-geek phone users will go for iPhone. Geeks will go for HTC's more advance phones. Of course there will be some left for Atom's family.
My Kaiser has 3 meg pixel camera which can take a picture of a business card and put the name, phone numbers .... , company name into the contact book directly. When I am lost, I turn on its GPS and walk 10 Meters and I know whether I am on the right track. I have the entire China map in it. It supports 8G microSD card and I put hours of MP3 in it. Its bluetooth support stereo.
Scrolling command dial, many hardware buttons, screen is bright, response is quick, good size storage memory. Qualcom 400Mhz CPU has dual-core, an ARM9 and ARM6 built-in. Plus, important for some folks, ton's of fans keep making it to have better and better features or looks.
Yes, there is something I don't like about it. It does not have an infrared port. Integrated mini plug does not allow charging and listening music at the same time while sitting at a desk (need to get a 3rd party adapter RMB25) and I don't need the sliding keyboard.
-------------------
There are only two guys, wonderful people in AtomExec circle who dedicated their time putting out two near-final WM6 ROM's but all other HTC phones have more ROM's than you want to count.
Again, if Atom V has the Kaiser hardware, I won't mind go for it immediately. But with its middle of the road hardware and past customers supporting records, unless its price are low enough, I would wait...
It is just my 2 cents, I respect your feeling toward your Atom!

For a confessed tecno person a liitle bit upset you are trading in old currency and such a low denomination like your opinon should be worth at least a 1930's penny's value also like new technology...
if the atom v comes in at $835 (as have seen) it is cheap with the specs as i paid $1200 AUD for the original atom ... but will upgrade after seeing the short list of Atom V, the zinc II & touch cruise but from there who knows... might be happy like your mate in 5 years saying .. nah, why upgrade it does all i want it to do ... then you can roll your eyes at our buying for needs mentality and say get with the program ...

palah, everyone has his own opinion, but most of what jychan28 said is right. I am an O2 Atom user since Atom. However, O2 has a lousy after sales service. I am stuck up with Atom Exec at the moment (cause I spent my last cent on it ) and now waiting for good times to change this to an HTC device most probably Tytn-II or Touch Cruise and good riddance from O2.

Agree 100%... like yours my williness to buy again was based on own experience so after two good (not perfect) 02 products so will consider another... if i had your experience would more than likely feel similar... but also be aware HTC, 02, MWg, Nokia etc etc all produce dogs every now and then...
although the aotmV so beautiful ,i do not change the exec until it die~hehe
I would say yes, it is a downgrade in terms of speed and rom size on the Atrom V, but what about the hi-price paid for HTC devices. Also you can always expand it using sd cards, and personally i never like choking up the internal memory.
There are reviews on the Atom V already. And a video review on the 3D/Video performance.
If you ask me after watching the video, I'd rather trust the Atom V over the Touch Cruise.

Switching from Winmo to Android.

Greets to all fellow XDA membs!
Ill make it sweet n short:
Been a diehard Winmo user for many years, winmo has given me the love we all know about (don't regret a second of it) but.... some fukr stole my fuze and im in the market for a new phone, ive been eyeballin the TP2, butttttt, since i have switched to Ubuntu for quite some time now, i said to myself maybe thats the same path I should take on my mobile devices.
Sooo, what do you dislike or like about the Hero? is it worth ditchin the good ol Winmo for some Android? Do i get any "benefit" by runnin linux on pc and on my phone? How do prior Winmo users feel about the switch?
-How about the on screen keyboard? Multitouch makes a big diff, I mean typing a sorto long email?
Thanks all for the tips, I trust my fellow XDA members givin me a good birds eye view.
I guess we can turn this into "mini" reviews.
I've just switched from a Touch HD to a Hero. So far I'm very impressed with the Hero. Speed of screen switching is good and somehow I feel more "connected" with the Hero. I have no problems updating Facebook or my blog from the phone. Keyboard is very responsive (I was using Zoomboard on the HD) and I've only once found myself trying to get a stylus out (non-existent on the Hero).
I'd prefer a better calendar app for the Hero, the in built one is a bit limited. Pocket Informant for Android would be good.
All in all I can say it's been a very positive experience moving across though.
M
After using WM for some years I don't regret using a Hero now.
It's fantastic.
Being a Ubuntu/Linux user for some years now I decided I wanted a Linux-based smartphone.
Just do it and you won't regret it.
Coool, thanks for the replys., I think im takin the Dip! 2 Android
Any one else?
Coming from a Htc diamond (1) I can only say buy the hero
It works a lot quicker the sense ui is brilliant (even the normal android screen is far more usefull than winmo's ''today''screen)
I can't say I miss any programs I ran on winmo, almost all popular programs have android alternatives in the market.
For example Meebo IM instead of messenger live... works a lot better my contacts don't even notice I'm online on my hero instead of my pc.
Also typing on a touch phone without a stylus has never been so easy before (have to admit never had something else other than winmo devices not naming the Ithingy)
I don't have any regrets the only thing I miss a bit is the bluetooth support. But hopefully that will be fixed in future android/rom updates.
the only real downside but's a htc thing I think, is the camera has no flash therefor almost useless in situations with bad lighting. But I don't care so much for that.
Have a very nice digital slr wich makes perfect pictures ^^
Androidod
It blows WinMo away I was forever messing with Windows Mobile and it just seemed an OS that promised the world but delivered very little.
I got the T Mobile G2 and I am well hooked. my only 2 gripes with it are.
1) handling long SMS's it seems to only get the first part of long texts and i dont get the rest. With other phones its receives 2 messages and linked them.
2) Good apps are a bit thin on the ground when you compare with IPhone apps. They have Monkey Island Special Edition, Madden to name but 2 big name titles. We need more support for the good of the device after sales.
Other than that its the nuts!

No for here in Australia.. I recieved it today, have installed 15 apps so far, and it Flies!!! So fast, but the browser is pretty average. Hope they patch that soon.
Really enjoyinh the experience as i use it for work and we have Sharepoint 2010 as well.. so this is a wonderful experience.
Just ordered one
Just ordered one, to a very good price
Dont know when it will arrive. It does'nt come out in Denmark until monday.
I'm holding out to see the pricing of the Trophy on Vodafone, and to see if the 7Pro arrives in Australia.
Tell us how it is, the $49 cap is certainly a huge incentive ($30 less than the iPhone I believe?)
Im not on plan, bought it outright for my work phone, and it was out of the box, charged, then setup. Connected to our exchange, sharepoint and ive installed 15 or so apps now.. really impressed.
Camera takes pics quickly and with little fuss. Telstra Hub is a big slow app, so i dont use it and the thing flies.
So far so good.
How is the headphone volume on the device you guys have. Mine was so low I had to send it back
could you please tell me where i can buy a NON-contract mozart in australia? my old sister is in australia now. want to buy one. PM me if you like. thanks.
Is the build quality satisfying? From pics, it seems the Trophy is the more beautiful handset (while the Mozart has a more solid unibody frame and better camera/flash).

I find the Mozart to be a wonderful in the hand device, i have moved from the larger heavier HD2 to this and find it a substantial improvment all up, although the screen is smaller is my only major issue to accept. But functional size, wonderful sturdy machine.
and it gets better by the day as i get used to it.

Seriously.. 8gig is huge.. if you want to carry every song you own or every pic/video etc.. get a media device..
If you want a smartphone which is light.. good battery life.. fast.. dead easy to use.. Lots of apps comming online by the day.
Ive got 15-17 apps on the phone now, on the HD2 5 to 7 would kill it memory wise.
Ive installed a cycling training app and the GPS/battery life and accuracy is way better than the 6.5 roms.
Very happy
I know what y'all mean regarding the Mozart and WP7. As a long time Mac user/most time Mac fan looks like my iPhone4 might be going on eBay. Definitely some things that need to be fixed and more apps to come but as a first release MS have done a fairly good job with the new OS. Def better than Android 2.2 already at this stage.
