Colorware is customizing G1's - G1 Accessories

So I found this awesome service called colorware that will basically paint your G1 in almost any color scheme you want. It is pretty cool. It is $175 if you already have the phone or you can buy a new one from them for a little over $700. Check it out.

apparently the company doesn't know how to add... I can get a new one from tmobile for 400 and then send it to them for 175 which turns out to be 575... 125 short.
even if I added tax up it would still come out to 75 dollars more... I would think they would charge less if they already had the phones at the warehouse.
Personally I think this is a rip off. Anyone ever use them?

it is a rip off, but i have used them before, i got my laptop painted, which was cool at first, but it was not worth it, i could have did it myself

Personally I think this is a rip off as well. Just thought I would post it for anyone who might be eccentric enough to do it. I think it is a cool concept but there are better ways to spend $175.

Tell you what send me your g1, I'll cover all the openings and break out the spray paint and i will do all this for 20 bucks plus money for the color paint you want lol

Yeah, it is a rip off..although the phone you buy from them is "unlocked" it would still be cheaper to buy it from T-Mobile for 400, buy an unlock code for 25 and then get is custom colored for 175. The only way you're saving money is because its not 175 unless you just get one color. So in a way, if you dont have a G1, it would be best to buy it unlocked from colorware if you're getting all parts different colors.

T-Mobile unlocks for free when you buy it from them at full price.

Yea ask a CS or Sales Rep at the local store. It says in their policy it is free for those who buy it in full... and if you got it at discount then you have to wait 90 days and pay your bill on time.

Jesus Horatio Christ those are some ugly phones. Why would someone do that to their phone? They look like they are made by PlaySkool or something.
Send me $700 and I'll send you a G1 that looks like ****, too. Heck, I'll do it for $699. Use the extra buck to buy some bubble gum.

no design on it or anything? that kinda sucks =/
btw, does anyone know what kind of paint would be needed? thinking about trying it but i don't wanna ruin the G1s nice "texture" (can't think of any other way to descripe it lol)

@meltus...
your gonna need a HCF type of paint (Hard Coat Finish) thats flexible and chip resistant. The flexibility will stop it peeling and cracking. Plus you need to put at least 3-5 coats on the cover to make sure your getting an even and tough cover.
I use a company called paintsprays.co.uk for all the paints i use in painting mobile phones.
if u need ne help just pm me!

40 days for no-contract users that provide their own G1 (like bought from craigslist).

I have one, how much you wanna pay. I have a complete housing.
how much u want to have?
is it new, any scretches there?
im in austria at home, idk home much are the shipping costs :/
There isnt a scratch on it. I always keep an extra on hand. I dont know what it would cost to send to you, but I figure like $20 for the cover plus shipping....let me know.
20$ plus shipping is fine, if shipping is not more than ~15$.
a friend of me sends me a kindle fire from the US to austria, and thats about 13$, so i dont think its more for the cover. maybe less, couse u can use a smaller bag (envelope).

idk if this is the right one for you, but a friend of mine sends me something from the US to austria with this:

it´s called "Flat Rate Box to Austria".

I just ordered an extra battery cover off of ebay for under $15.00. I'm sure you could find someone on there who would ship overseas if you contacted them and explained the shipping situation before you bid on it.
I was really wanting to find a battery cover with the gold trim, because to me it seems more professional for some reason. But I sure as heck wasn't paying the $80+ people were wanting for the whole housing.

[Q] Finding an amaze to buy has been such a pain.. any suggestions?

I've been looking for a month now, easily. I tried buying one on XDA, but it didn't work out and now I'm waiting for a refund(I get it tomorrow), several were listed on craigslist, but either they sold it before I could get to it(prices around 350-375) or they seem sketchy(selling for 400.. oh wait, you don't want to pay 400, how about 200? Buy it now motha&$%&@*..) like they probably just stole it.. found a guy on craigslist right now who wanted to get a sensation xl, but then was thinking about trading for my vibrant with cash on top so he could get the wireless tethering, and NOW is talking about keeping his damn phone and paying me to root it! Sigh..
So where did you guys buy your phones at? I don't want to go the route of going contract to get one on sale(why pay more per month to save 200 bucks?), and the cheapest I see them by sellers on ebay is around $420 if they have a return policy like they run a business..
I would probably keep looking on XDA, but until the mod there removes the negative feedback that the seller left(I didn't do ANYTHING wrong as the buyer), I can't very well expect anyone to take the chance on me.. besides, the guy who was selling sounded safe enough to buy from, but nothing about that deal worked out the way it should have.
So yea, anyone have any suggestions for some other places to get a decent deal? Maybe some other forums? I plan to buy a spare battery and charger, and am trying to keep the price for everything under 400 total.. I figured it would make more sense to ask here since everyone here has probably already done the same research I've been doing!
How much are you looking to spend mine is like two weeks old and mint. It's been in a case with a screen protector. I might be getting a new phone so I could give it up.

I Pm'd you back.. I don't want a mod to move this to the marketplace thinking I am just asking to buy a phone here, if someone here wanted to sell theirs and it seems legit, cool.. but mainly if someone has some advice for some other places to find one, that would be even better. After a month of looking, and drooling over the development forums, and waiting for one to get here, and it never coming.. I just want to get my amaze!
The guy I've been talking about on craigslist sounded like he was game and wanting to meet till I said we should meet at a tmobile. I told him I've been hearing about people selling blacklisted phones(which I have been hearing) and that I would feel safest if they can check the imei.. suddenly he decided he is going to keep it.. so back to the drawing board.
So where are you guys finding yours? I'm seeing the going price about 350-400 depending on condition and extras, but like I said, I haven't found a legit seller in person yet who still has it so..
i agree 100% on this! i see them for like $280-$350 in STL but i have no ride there. on ebay they are around $400+ USED <--- wth? The most id pay for this phone is $350. I guess ill wait till the price drops..

I guess it is just a matter of getting lucky. If you could get those at that price, you could resell em on ebay for a mint. Im just trying to get a phone and extra battery for $400.. You're making me feel much better about my vibrant, lol(sorry).
Sadly, the cellphone gods are really trying to teach me patience, paypal says the refund will go through on the 29th, I called them because it hasn't gone through yet.. evidently they have till the end of the business day.
The good part about that is that I have several people who contacted me with a few reasonable offers, and maybe even the best would be local.. so I guess I wait and see who pulls through when I have the cash in hand.
If you are looking to buy one too, and you have the cash in hand, I would mention it.. maybe one of them would rather sell to you than wait on me?
I work at TMO in STL, if you found a buyer in STL, I could verify the phone and you could paypal me the money to buy, just throwing that out there

If you gift the payment, there is no buyer protection. That means ANY payment under the "personal" payment options tab. If you pay for it goods, the person you give the money to will have 3% of it taken as a fee.. so if you pay 3% more than that price it covers the fee, and you will have protection. Just make sure you put in the description/note of the payment exactly what you are paying for, and put your address in the note area as well.
Don't gift payment, pay the 3% extra in fees and buy as "goods".. if there IS a problem you will get a refund. Just be careful the both of you, I don't want this post to cause a problem between members- hopefully the fact that you guys seem pretty local to each other keeps everything honest if you go thru with it!

Check out this link: Paypal purchase protection
The important thing to realize, if nothing has changed, is that ebay owns paypal.. or maybe it is paypal that owns ebay.. either way, buying from ebay but paying with something other than paypal means you just have dispute resolution through ebay, not protection. Paying with paypal means you actually are protected-- they will collect evidence from buyer and seller, and if the seller can't prove that they have taken the actions needed to get the right product to the buyer, paypal will give you a refund and collect payment from the seller.
I guess the idea I am trying to put out there is that paypal is more protected than just buying through ebay, but a combination of the two is the safest. To sell something on ebay means fees up to 8% of the price, then to accept paypal payment costs another 3% of the price.. that is why the prices are higher on ebay than you will find locally, it costs up to 11% to sell something thru ebay.
Edit: so if I was going to buy on here or locally, and the lowest price for a safe buy on ebay was roughly $400 with free shipping(I see multiple at this price).. I would expect the price shipped to not exceed $360, or roughly 10% less than the ebay price.

Oh, i mean buying from Ebay through paypal. That is the safest way that i know. If you buy from paypal and through paypal you have no proof really that you even bought the phone. i just feel safer buying from Gazelle on Ebay because its a actual company and they dont want to loose business and same for other people on ebay. if its just some random person they could probably care less.. as long as they have the money.
Yeah to this day $400 would be safe. I only like to buy stuff on ebay if you are able to return it as well, makes you feel like they are real. Gazelle has a amaze for about $410 or something. they are who i bought my sensation from and im about to send it back cause the screen is messed up. Im going to wait till i can find an Amaze for cheaper or Find someone to meet up

This one was listed at $419 the other day free shipping, buy it now, it didn't sell.. now is relisted at $399. Considering they do 7 day returns and have such good feedback, but it still hasn't sold yet.. I would say they aren't worth $400 anymore. After all, the value isn't based on what they are being sold for, but what someone is actually willing to pay. So if they aren't selling at $400 on ebay, I would say in person it is worth 10% less(they are tacking on their fees after all).. so $360+/- sounds like what the current value should be.
I'd prefer to do it locally, but it sounds like you have more options in STL than I do in Jacksonville.. or gainesville, daytona.. sigh.

[Q] Best Buy warranty

Question about anyone who has used the best buy "black tie protection plan":
I figured it was worth it, i convinced my parents to get it for their galaxy s2's. its like 3 dollars extra a month, but theres no deductible. compared to the whopping 200 dollars if you use atts insurance.
of course it doesnt cover loss or theft, but the way i figure, i dont use cases, i think phones should be naked if you have insurance, so i will probably break mine more than i would lose it and still on the off chance that i do lose it, im only saving a couple hundred dollars, becuase att would still be charging me 200 dollars.
The process seems to be; Break your phone with any accidental damage from handling, water damage (it says spills i think, but the guy in the store seemed to think it meant submersion, does it?) If it stops working.... bring it into best buy, they give you a loner android phone, (im ok using a loner for a couple days as long as its android phone) and then i think they send yours back and then get your new/refurbished one.
Is this a smart move or should i just cancel it and use at&t's?
also, will they know i rooted?
I dont know about the rooting but this plan worked for me and my Streak. I broke the screen after having it for a year and they replaced no questions asked and it was flashed so I say go for it.
Do you have the Black Tie protection? Is was $10/month for my Note but I paid $180 (I think) upfront for 2 years of coverage. It was tough, but I just know this phone will break. I went through 3 screens on my Streak

Yeah you're right, it's $10 a month or $170 up front. The guy told me they send you a replacement phone that is made up of parts from returned defective phones. So they are just like new.
It may sound like a plug because I work for best buy mobile but I personally think their plan is awesome.
I have used it a good amount of times on my smart phones and have never had any issues. I also see a lot of customers having good experiences with it. Sure you will find some people that the system didnt work for because they really messed up their phones but thatll happen with anything.
About the loaner phones, I wouldnt count on them having a loaner android. I just know from my store and the stores around that its a refurbed iphone 3g that we give out and we usually dont have any in. This means the customer has to buy a POS prepaid to get through the couple days till the new one comes in. Just figured I would give you a heads up.

Lifetime Phone Warranty

Why not just pay $9.99 to get Best Buy Black Tie Protection?

Number one reason is the wait to get your phone back can be a week or two weeks sometimes a month the program is good but I can't go that long without my phone
Ask sprint about their options I think if you are just worried about cracked screens and stuff you can get protection through them for.that at like 4 bucks a month. If I am wrong someone interject. Reason I say 4 is I don't think the tep has raised yet and if u lock it in now it won't raise till you resign...
I do not have Black Tie but I heard that its pretty awful. At times they do not honor replacements.
Google it for more info.
I have Black Tie, but I gotta tell you: the whole "free loaner phone if yours has to be special ordered"? Count on rocking a crappy old Android or a BlackBerry for a little bit if your phone can't be initially just fixed....
Here's the rub: yours IS gonna have to be special ordered, if you need a replacement, no matter if your Best Buy has 500 new EVOs in stock: they won't let you have one of theirs. For me, for the times I had to use it, I waited about 2 weeks the first time (because it was "backordered", even though my Best Buy had plenty), and about 3 days the second.
Of course, you also are also DEFINITELY getting a refurb, count on that 100%.
*I still use it, like I said, but the guy at Best Buy won't tell you all these little "details", which, I think, is a bit shady.

I waited a month for a broken charger port on my OG Evo. Seemed like an eternity. Got it back and found that while they fixed the port, they blew out the light on the menu button (looked like it was missing a tooth) . Wasn't going to wait again with a beat up small lender phone.
Gave me a scratched and dented LG Optimus. Big ole scratch on the screen.

Lol at the people that don't like brick and mortar stores its that that is hurting the economy why buy it somewhere and pay a little extra and take a little extra time n pay tax when u can order it online for cheaper ans not pay tax. However I heard awhile back they where or are trying to put laws in place for sales tax on online items.

Why not just pay $9.99 to get Best Buy Black Tie Protection?
No deductible.
Unlimited claims.
Free loaner phone if yours has to be special ordered.
Covers all physical damage except full water submersion.
Cancel any time free.
Those are the exact words I was told when buying my phone.
I got Black Tie.
Persuade me to cancel it so I can save money.

I actually just dropped sprints insurance and am going to straight up buy the black tie insurance for $170 for the 2 year protection. How sprint is Jacking up the price on everything you would be paying $264 for 2 years not including the $150-$200 deductible. Hell if I can save $100-$250 with BB with a refurbished phone and wait 2 weeks its worth it.

ZAGG has insurance as well. I think its 100$ for 2yrs and covers everything with a 100$ deductible. Might wanna look into that.

best buy also doesnt cover lost or stolen tho if you use mobile defense or sprint locator those arent a huge issue..

yes cause buying online is different then buying in brick and mortar... the store actually makes more of a profit from online sales then store. and i paid taxes when i ordered from sprint tyvm.. the only thing being loss on online sales is taxes to the state but as someone who works in retail i can also tell you all the people using food stamps arent helping much either.. lord forbid they dont get their tax free soda chips and fat cakes

i use online cause its a convenience . i work over nights so i can shop while everything is closed and its usually cheaper cause they save on labor and other things a brick and mortar has to pay.. walk into a kmart.. have their website loaded and check prices, you will see that a lot of their stuff is more expensive in stores then online and they will not price match

Yeah and is rather pay extra to know that American people have a job even if it is a store and 5 extra dollars that's all im trying to say we have to many people to be cutting jobs and companies can pick up and leave over seas. Btw I agree 3rd sucks I work 12-8 am and it is hard a lot of.the time
But all and all price wise. BB is the cheapest if you don't mind waiting a couple days for a replacement refurbished phone and the fact they don't cover loss or theft. Anyone object?

Nope however I am interested in zagg..
I use http://www.squaretrade.com - $119 for two years protection after tax and 10% discount (coupon code TENFTEN).
You still pay a $99 deductible, and no coverage for theft or loss....but it has great reviews which is comforting. And at about $5/month...much better deal.

I had the black tie protection and I'll tell you why it isn't so hot.
First, doesn't cover lost or stolen phones.
Second, loaner phones require a $150 deposit.
Third, when I used the insurance to fix a broken charging port, I sent the phone in on Jan 2nd. The phone came back unrepaired 3 times. I finally got a replacement phone the second week of February. Believe me, I would have gladly gave a hundred dollars for a replacement from sprint.
Learned my lesson on best buy protection.

Ask sprint about their options I think if you are just worried about cracked screens and stuff you can get protection through them for.that at like 4 bucks a month. If I am wrong someone interject. Reason I say 4 is I don't think the tep has raised yet and if u lock it in now it won't raise till you resign...

The 4$ is still the same for service and repairs. However the replacement part of the TEP has gone up i believe.
And no the TEP will be raised for everyone but only in September if you sign up for TEP before july 17th.

Number one reason is the wait to get your phone back can be a week or two weeks sometimes a month the program is good but I can't go that long without my phone

I work for Best Buy and am very familiar with the GSBTP plans (Geek Squad Black Tie Protection). What I am about to say is my own opinion and not that of Best Buy's.
That being said, I am going to give you an unbiased opinion on this because I see both sides to what you guys are saying. I bought my phone outright from BBY 2 days ago. Did I buy GSBTP? No, here is why: I like the lost or stolen option from Asurion/Sprint and I never had to use it until 2 weeks ago when someone stole my EVO 3D from my store. I tried remote locating it and all that crap and it didn't help. Paid the deductible through Asurion (should have been $100 but they told me $50) and got a replacement the next day.
As far as what GSBTP offers, yeah, it's not bad. But there are some things that need clarified in what has been said in this thread. The replacements now are all "Rapid Exchange", as in, you come into BBY and we fill out all the paperwork to get you a new phone. What happens is that the system then generates and order for a refurbished phone to be shipped that day while we send yours back to them at the same time. This means that you will get a new phone within 3 business days, not too bad.
However, the loaner phones are pretty crappy, as mentioned. But stores are suppose to charge you $50 for the loaner phone that gets returned back to you after you return it. They don't all do that, but they are supposed to, so keep that in mind that YMMV.
Everything else in the OP is right. BBY won't deny a claim unless you fully submerged it, nor would they even know that unless you told them. There is a girl at my store that literally drops and shatters her iPhone screen atleast 2 times a month and it's been happening for over a year now, never had an issue. Also, with GSPTB, you are entitled to a 1-time battery replacement on your phone as well which is awesome, but unfortunately doesn't apply to phones without removable batteries.
Hopefully this clarified things for you guys and gave you an idea of both sides to the GSBTP story

Thank you for the clarification.

[Q] Broken screen: Sell on Ebay or try to get Samsung to repair

I hope somebody can point me in the right direction. I dropped my Note (no case I am an idiot--all due to my vanity) and cracked the screen. I think I have 2 options.
1. Sell on Ebay---how much should I expect to get?
2. Try and get samsung to repair--I heard they will fix it for 200 bucks.---How do I figure out how to do that? Will it matter that I bought it on Ebay used and don't have any original info for it?
thanks
Honestly you will probably spend the same amount either way. ~200 to fix or ~200-250 selling broken and buying newer used one. I think they hold strong still at around ~500

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1487716 (Option 1- wouldn't recommend)
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Displ...20&sr=1-2&keywords=cracked+screen+galaxy+note (Is this what you would need? Sorry, not so great with the hardware stuff always)
http://www.buymytronics.com/Cell-Phone/Samsung/Samsung-Galaxy-Note-SGH-i717
(Option 3- This website can estimate the value of your note with defects although I do not know its reliability, may be nice to troubleshoot)
http://www.sellcell.com/phone/samsung-galaxy-note-sgh-i717/ (the top price listed here is 295, but it does not say what condition the phone is in. I will continue to look for you though. )
Hey mate
In my honest opinion and experiance i'd go the ebay option. Aim around the $300 mark.
As my replacement screen cost me 350 (in australia) also you never know if the drop has
Fractured anything internally.
So id sell it for the 300,fork out the other 200 and get a brand new one with warranty.
Just my 2cents
Yeh I would sell the device. Since the demand is still high. And save up for either another phone or use the money and wait it out ..saying if you had a backup.. And get note 2 ! if and when it does come out.. lol
don't sell on ebay

From personal experience selling a device like this on ebay sucks. First you must post a very detailed description of the device other wise if you get any buyer thats very picky you are going to have a very bad time paying for the shipping to and from the shipper, and then the fees are crazy, between ebay and pay pal you are going to lose like 60$ and then you have to wait for about two or three weeks before you can use the money because scumbag paypal has the buyer protection thing. If i were you i'd look for a shop to try to repair it, if not i really really recommend that you try your luck on craigslist.:good:

Here's my opinion. If it's in good condition otherwise, and you really like it (who wouldn't?), I'd definitely have it fixed professionally by Samsung if you can get it done for that $200. You'll have a brand new screen on a phone that can't even be a year old yet (that can be checked by serial number and it does not matter to Samsung if you bought it used) . If you try to sell it (high eBay fees as others have mentioned, and a lot of hassle) and start with another new or used Note, I think you're going to take a much bigger loss than $200. Even for people who carry AT&T insurance, the deductible is $200.
I'd call Samsung support direct to find out if that repair quote is available.
I will buy it off you lol

I just broke my screen and decided to use the insurance and for 200 got a new (refurb) phone with 1 yr warranty. I think 200 is a high deductible, but by telling them I lost it I could keep my broken one. Maybe get something back for the old one to soften the cost.

Broke my glass monday getting in the truck after being out on vacation. They locked my doors over the week (they are never locked) so i had to reach across to unlock the pass door (which i never have to do) and had my phone in my back pocket. I felt it get hooked on the door close knob in the door jam and when i jumped out to throw my **** in the pass side of the truck i pulled it out and almost fell down.
EVERY f%#^ng morning i load all my **** in the pass side and have my phone in my hand while getting in the truck and set it on the rag on the floor...... i am pissed off to no end
