VZW - More RAM / disable Dialer Skin - Touch Pro CDMA

Want 8-12 more MB of free RAM on your horribly gimped 6850???? Just disable the pretty HTC dialer skin. The dialer will switch back to the default WM one, which to be honest, I still prefer. Little did I know the HTC skin was sucking up about 10 MB of RAM.
Give it a shot and share the results. You can use several apps like Advanced Config or Diamond Tweak to disable the HTC dialer skin, or change it manually via the registry.
Below is the manual registry tweak:
-'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / Security / Phone / Skin'
-change the value of 'Enabled' from 1 to 0.
Wanted to see if others saw the same results by simply disabling the dialer skin.

A+ thread
I also gained about 10MB of memory and i also like the default dialer

I tried it and noticed my total ram usage went from about 66% to 58%, so that is a pretty nice improvement. I do prefer the skinned dialer for looks but it seems like the default dialer is a little bit more responsive.

Gained roughly 11 MB of Memory after this tweak!

Very nice tweak..thanks

very nice find. I saw it in the advance config, never tried it until now. Didn't expect it to take 10MB!

wow i just used it on my fuze and i only have 29 pct of memory being used now
thanks for the tip i never expected that much memory freed up

im at 24% ram usage wow. i wonder a normal windows theme not the TF3D this tweak will do to the battery life and then polling reg change 813AM took off charger just did 10TXTs with TF3D still on will get back to this later and edit it. to tell of my findings.

+1
WM Dialer isn't much worse if any. 10MB is a nice chunk.

Great find, THX!!! I too like the default dialer better.
***UPDATE*** - This makes the bluetooth icon disappear from the task line at the top, when using the manual registry tweak. Don't know if the same thing happens when using the two tweak programs.

You can also disable the HTC SIP menu (SIPGT_app.exe) for a couple more mb of ram.
(Remove HCKU\Software\HTC\BootLauncher\Apps\SIP_Menu. May want to back it up if you wish to bring it back.)
The menu to switch between soft keyboards won't function if you stop SIPGT_app running at boot.

On second thought, I decided against this hack.
It also affects the incoming call screen. Much harder to answer a call with the screen that comes up with the HTC dialer.

This does change incomming calls back to the default WM style. You can use the Green/Call hardware button to answer incomming calls.

Am I the only one who lost the bluetooth icon?

Disabling the dialer extension has the unpleasant side effect of disabling the nice indicator that tells you whether your data link is dormant or not, however ("data arrows" will stay lit forever).
I prefer to switch back to PhoneCanvas.dll (the xv6800-style dialer) as the dialer extension and then rename away the DIALER/PROGRESS bitmap settings in HKLM\Security\Phone\Skin. (Set "ext" to "\windows\PhoneCanvas.dll", and leave Enabled set to 1.)
This still saves significantly on RAM, but it doesn't break the nice indicators for data activity or not, which I personally find useful.

skywing is right. i verified it on my sprint touch pro. his mod does work better. I just wish we had a full skin like kokko's old skin or paul's big button dialer. that would be nice to have in vga mode.
thanks,
sid

it does get rid of bluetooth notifier i switched back to regular luckily i have the att version so 10 mb isnt a big deal haha

If I understood your question, the default that the phone came with was:
\windows\phcanhtc.dll
Hope that helps.

one problem with skywing's method is the once u make a call u get a whitescreen that looks like the HTC dialer interfering with the WINMO dialer. i just disabled the key and used the default dialer. I can live with the arrows. not that big of a deal.

Magic button 2.1

I read from Magic Button's official website that they have a new version 2.1 that resolves the task bar color problem. However, when I followed the link to download.com, it is 2.0 that get downloaded, and this version mess up my task bar.
Google on "Magic Button 2.1" does not yield any result.
Has anyone got version 2.1 or is able to post a link?
Thanks.
Edit: Found the link. It is on the official webpage itself! The download.com's copy has not been updated.
Hmm... it's a shame that even version 2.1 mess up the color. My black task bar color is no longer black. It's today icon is also in the wrong position, covering half of my network signal (in 128dpi. Did'nt try the other dpi yet)
What a pity. It has been my favourite task manager for a long long time, and was given up when I moved to WM6. I was so excited when I saw the version update history, and thinking that 2.1 would work without problem in WM6. Looks like we have to wait for version 2.2 and see if it works.
Fortunately, pBar is working. It does not show the running tasks on the taskbar, but that's the next best thing now.
Thanks for the tip. The taskbar colors are much improved, but not perfect.
Here's a link to my previous post on fixing the placement of the Today icon when using 128dpi:

Thanks for the solution regarding Today icon position. Came across your post before, but didnt remember it untill you mentioned it. Thanks
But the color is outright the wrong color at the moment. It is the default blue whereas my task bar is black. Is there a way to fix the color? I really like the glossy black task bar, and unless MB can blend in, I would stick with pBar.
Sorry, I'm using the default blue theme, so MB looked pretty good to me.
Do a search on using UITweaker to fix the MB colors... not sure how it will work with the new version though.
With further investigationk, I found out that magic button is not actually showing only in blue color. It is able to use any WM6 color. The reason it does not blend in to my black task bar was because my black taskbar was "painted over" by Tweak2k2 rather than part of a black theme.
I tried it with other colors besides blue, and found out that it can blend in with any color.
Now the logical thing for me to do is to come up with a glossy black taskbar WITHOUT using Tweak2k2.
Can someone give me some pointers on how I can change my taskbar to glossy black ?
BTW, Steve, your tips on changing the Today icon position works beautifully. Thanks for that.
Still lots of bugs?
Magic button 2.1 seems to be quite buggy.
The position of the today icon just randomly moves about. It even moves all the way to the right, completely wipe off my clock and date, network signal, and other icons. When it is not doing that, the position of the today icon does not seem to stay at the same position. I notice that the registry value changes by itself as this happens.
Any idea what causes this and if there is a cure?

I use this program as well and it's also my favorite. I'm considering putting it into 3.0 of AP when released.
Yes it's a little buggy and I've noticed that the fix for color blending isn't working very well, nor is the placement of the house icon. I've e-mailed the developer to see if they can resolve this. If they fix both issues it would be a perfect addition to the ROM as it would replace xbutton and batti (buggy batti btw and I've disabled it for now with a tremendous improvement).
Thanks for noticing the registry value changes on it's own. Maybe we can lock down that value some way so this doesn't happen but it may cause an issue. Not sure if there is a way to lock down registry values or protect them in WM6 but it's worth a look into.

There is some slight movement of the Today icon upon closing all active tasks, but not enough to cause problems for me.
I suspect when the Today icon moved all the way to the right (covering all your taskbar info) you may have inadvertently changed the registry setting by selecting Magic Button 'Settings.' If you go into Settings, it will overwrite the hack, and if you don't select "Show clock and 4 icons" it defaults to 0, moving the Today icon all the way to the right upon exiting Settings. I think if you do the hack last, after getting all your other options set, the hack will hold... at least it seems to for me.
I think the flaw is too serious
Icon position
==========
I tried the registry edit, and found out that in 128dpi, the smallest value for the position (as described in Steve's post) is 06. That would place the today icon immediately to the left of the phone signal icons, and would cover up any mail message and vueflo icon. If you make it 08 so as to enable the vueflo and mail message icons to be visible, then when you move to 192 dpi portrait mode, the today icon would be completely off to the left of the screen (i.e. does not appear on the device at all).
This means that with value of 08, magic button is completely non-functional in 192 dpi.
Even with value of 06 (which still covers some icons in 128 dpi), at 192dpi it is no longer possible to close an application. This is because we need to press and hold the running icons on the task bar in order to close it. At 192 dpi, the runnng icon is no longer visible on the taskbar, thus you can longer press and hold in order to close it. Even if there is only one application running, as long as you are not on today screen, the running icon would not appear on the taskbar. If you're on today screen, because the today icon shifts unexpectedly to the right by one position, then it is possible to close the running application if you have only one application running. However, if you have more than one running, then even on today screen, you could not close any application. The only way around this is to switch to the landscape mode so that running icons have room on the taskbar to appear.
Color
====
The color blends better in 96 and 192dpi. In 128, the look is bad. Unfortunately, most of the time I'm using 128dpi.
I think pBar is still the one.
But seriously, I do not say that pBar is perfect. In fact there are a few problems, as listed below:
1) the date and time color is not right. My solultion: don't use it.
2) the favourites items could not be rearranged. The move button does not work. My solution: not a big deal. I don't need to move them.
The only regret is that it does not put up the running icons on the task bar, therefore, switching/closing program is a two click process instead of one click. Similarly, going back to the today screen is a two click process instead of magic button's one click.
Its advantages are also plenty:
1) it is very space efficient.
2) it solves the problem of comm manager in realVGA display.
3) it allows up to favourites program to be quick launched.
4) it really has no problem in realVGA environment. Magic button does not handle realVGA very well, in terms of icon positioning.

[PHONE CANVAS] [VGA] [LEO] [2G] Released And testing others

Ok, Everybody heres a finished (to my comfort) dialer that as far as i can see works properly.
I'll say its working at 99.999 percent and as with all the other canvases, landscape is not perfect.
its primarily for manila 2.5 but can work with 2.1, its 2G so no video calling but does have conference and works preaty smooth.
just quit cprog (and phcanvga.exe if you have it), install and then soft reset.
Cab pyrorob_gullum_Phone_Canvas_Enhancement_2G_4_2_V2.cab
Package: pyrorob_gullum_Phone_Canvas_Enhancement_2G_4_2_V2.rar
for those with the energy rom, heres a theme to match: pyrorob PhoneCanvas 4.2 EnergyRom Theme.cab install after the main install, soft reset.
So, i do want to thank everyone here and those who donate there time with this. I really appreciate this and am thankful for everyones help.
short statement:
we are a community of people helping each other to better our devices and only a tiny fraction of all the users contribute.
its great when it happens and no one should expect accolades or payment for there creativity.
(dont get me started on people who will only release things on this site until they get paid, i think it stifles the advancement of the community as a whole).
Now, i do want to specifically thank amarullz, whose phcanvga.exe im using, which without it, would have seriously hampered this and gullum who has been absolutely helpful and all the testers.
Phone Canvases in testing:
pyrorob Phone_Canvas_Enhancement_2G_3_0_1916_3532_2_ERom_Theme.cab
manila 2.1 compatible,no curtain, energyrom theme and confrence calling
pyrorob PhoneCanvas_4_3_35776_01.cab
manila 2.1 compatible,no curtain, confrence calling,AT&T video share and AT&T ptt (push to talk).
Hi Pyrorob, Im sure many people here are like me and read your posts, use your fixes, but dont know how to mod dialers and whatnot, so cant really offer help or suggestions with the things you are asking. It doesnt mean your efforst aren't appreciated though!
Regarding your dialer, it would be helpful if you posted a screenshot so we know what we're getting. And also some confirmations that we can uninstall the cab and it will restore our previous dialer without any issues etc. It probably also pays to mention not to use SKTools as you said in the EnergyROM thread it can totally delete the phone canvas and you wont be able to get back the one prior to install
Out of interest just how DO you do something like this anyway? Im a computer programmer but dont know anything about working on the phones. Like what language is the dialer written in? Do you have access to the code and can make changes that way, or are you just trying to resize images and hex edit things inside resource files or exe/dlls etc (eg x and y offsets)?
Thanks pyrorob, I'll give it a whirl, and I'll be sure and post if I have any thoughts.
Okay, so I can't get it to install. Says "Installation was unsuccessful. The program or settign cannot be installed because it does not have sufficient system permissions." I used dotfred's taskmanager to kill cprog, and put the phone into airplane mode. Any ideas?

yes, i understand that, the only thing is, i didn't just open a thread and waited, i sent out a bunch of pm's to different people that i know knew the specifics of what to do and how to do it right and no one even had the decency to even reply. its like people think of this as some sort of competition..
yeah if you just follow the same steps to uninstall as you did to install then youll be fine. basically the dll's for the canvas have a bunch of positioning resources and thru lots of trial and error i managed to get things to where they are now.
I checked out your canvas on my Touch Pro.
The only think I noticed (except of the back button on the top right corner you mentioned) is that the left soft button "All People" does not work for me.
When I press it it changes from "All People" to "Contacts" and Manila crashes in the Background.
Any hints?
I have the same sig as above and dialer is working great! Only few bugs i see are what was mentioned already, especially with the all people left sofkey. Another is when you place a call the top taskbar is gone, small rezizing issue exactly the same as with rhodium dialer. If u hit keypad the taskbar comes back then tap call status to go back and the taskbar stays. Maybe get it to stay from the get go when you first make a call? All the features seem to work and landscape seems smoother then rhodium with it. Sorry cant help you with the technical side but always a happy beta tester. Just work out the few kinks, give it a makeover, good to go!!!

P.S.
One more thing. If you're in landscape already say writint a text message, then press the call button to bring up the dialer, the screen goes into portrait mode with the dialer while it should be in landscape. Then you have to close the hardware keyboard, reopen, now dialer is in landscape.
Bluetooth Volume???
Can anyone test this dialer with their bluetooth device? I dont have one handy right now. Just to make a call, try to adjust the volume up/down using the 2 hardkeys on the side of the phone to see if it works? I know on the rhodium dialer it doesnt change the actual volume on the headset, just shows on the volume volume is changing but does nothing. Hope its not the case with this dialer or can be fixed if it is? Thanks

ok first one, the all people soft key, im testing the dialer on a phone with manila 2.5 and when you hit that key it goes into the manila contacts, the dialer originally is from a manila 2.5 leo rom so it might only work 100% with a manila 2.5 rom..
the top taksbar has to do with the repositioning by the phcanvga if it doent move up the incall screen and cut off the top then the buttons at the bottom will be cut. sometimes the phcanvga doesn't reposition properly at first so you can do a few things like switch to landscape and back, goto contacts and back or close and reopen it and it will reposition itself.
yeah and it going back to portrait? well as far as i know there isnt a whole lot of landscape support with the leo since it doesn't have a hard keyboard so i guess thats the way htc programed this?..
second one, try putting in this reg key:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Volume]
"EnableAdjustHSVolume"=dword:00000001
see if that works
Apart from the 'back' key issue noted, no problems on my current ROM build. Have installed, unistalled and reinstalled without issue following Pyrorob's instructions. Conference calling working well (my mates like being part of the beta test!). Great job and Thanks!

Oh i see, didnt know it was from a 2.5 version. That makes sense then. You think you can make a version to work with 2.1 manila though? I have no idea how hard that would be, just talking about getting the left softkey going for 2.1 manila. Ill have my jawbone 3 later today. Ill try it out of the box first to see if it works with the volume hardkeys on the phone, if that doesnt work then ill plug in the reg edit you provided. Still, this is the fastest port for a very nice vga dialer for our phones, WOW! Cant believe it took them forever to port tachi dialer and took u a few days and this one is wayyyyy better then tachi! Great work and would happily donate to you or wherever you would like me too for this and all your great work pyrorob, thank you!!!
Umm
Well out of the box the headset volume cannot be changed by the device with this dialer. I looked in the registry using the regular reg edit app thats cooked into nrg's rom and also tried using the one that came with sktools (which is more friendly i think!), neither have that entry.
I go to current user, control panel, volume, only entries here are all one worded, nothing like what you described and nothing with a standard setting of 0000001 or anything like that. Ill get a screen shot for u if that helps but looking in the reg i cant find it. Do i need to "add" the reg entry u described since its not there? If i do, how do i add it? Never done that before.
So far the only bug that I have found appart from the already mention ones, is a sliding bar on the right corner of the dialer when I open it up. The only way that i have found to make it disapear its by fliping the phone so the dialer goes to landscape and fliping it back to portrait and no more silder bar, and by closing the dialer with the end button instead of the x. Appart from that is working really great, so far no connecting delays ussing slide 2 answer. I'll be using it a couple of days more to test it out to see if anything else pops up. Hell, i like it so much i'll keep it until a new flash or a update from you pyrorob.
I think the only thing that needs its the energy theme.
Geat job man!
This dialer is like a God send to us, its soo good! Tested out the slide to answer/ignore and works flawless, no lag or sticking like rhodium! This is like an upgraded rhodium dialer for US users who dont have video call, its great. Love how theres no annoying bluetooth icon on the taskbar either when bluetooth is enabled with this dialer, huge plus for me! Hate having useless icons on the taskbar. Duh i know bluetooth is on cus i turned it on, why do i need an icon up there to remind me? If u can just make some finishing touches, skin the hell out of it to match energy rom, Golden, seriously golden here!!!

What sliding bar is this? Are you talking about the top right corner wheres theres a grey box with a black arrow distorted pointing left? Thats the back button which would be nice if it can be skinned good or resized (looks fine in landscape as well as everything else, just not so much when receiving a call but no biggie!). Other then that, i have no idea what you're talking about? Can u provide a screen shot maybe?

No man, i know the back button, it's not that. It a sliding up/down bar, the one that appears whe you flip it to landscape. It appears when i close the dialer pressing the x button and open it up again with the send button and if i flip it to landscape when flip back to portrait the bar stays, have to flip it back to make it go away. Sory can't post screen shots I'm at work, plus don't know how to take a screen shot from the phone.

How do you default HD2 Phone to show Speed Dial entries?

By default, the phone screen on the HD2 shows all Calls and Contacts. To get to your Speed Dial entries, you must hit Menu->View->Speed Dial. Not the speediest of things, and defeats the purpose of a "speed dial".
Does anyone know of a regedit to default the selection to "Speed Dial" rather than "Calls and Contacts"?
I couldn't find an answer in these forums, although I saw a few others asked the same thing... one poster referred me to co0kies home tab (which I use), but couldn't find any reference/solution to my dilemma.
Any one have a suggestion/answer?
Thanks!
I dont know if its possible to default the screen to speed dial, but the next best suggestion i can offer is setting up your home screen to your contacts there instead. if you dont have enough icons u can always use CHT to get more.

I use CHT and have a link to Contacts, but it would be really nice to have "Speed Dial" work as a one-button (or minimal keystroke) solution to frequently called numbers. Of course voice command helps too, but the Speed dial is a really nice feature I miss from the "stock" WM Dialer.
CHT even give you an avatar, only one click, instead of run phone panel first.
I think WM's speed dial is no way better than that...
By the way, the really fast way to active spead dial, which also worked on original WM dialer, is to keep the related botton on the dialer pressed for about one second, and there it goes. For e.g. keep "1" pressed to call your voice mailbox.

I just checked out the CHT shortcut you mentioned. Works great... I must have overlooked the ability to shortcut a "contact". Also, just checked out the "number long-press"... also a feature I wasn't aware of (I knew it was supported in WM 6.0 but didn't even think to try it in 6.5).
Anyway, now for curiosity sake, I'm still interested to find out where in the registry (if at all), the HTC dialer stores the default selection.
Thanks for the tips.

[APP][WM6.5+] DeviceLockXT - A fix for the Windows Classic Lock Screen [UPDATED v1.1]

I for one prefer to use the old 'Windows Classic' lock screen (i.e. the one where you have to tap the soft key then an unlock button like in WM6.1, see images), as it uses less memory and allows me to see the today screen. However, on many ROMs for HTC phones, even stock ROMs, it doesn't seem to work properly with regards to incoming calls.
When you receive an incoming call, the lock screen pops up asking you to tap unlock, but it is unresponsive and obscures the caller ID screen, meaning you can't see who's calling you or the accept / reject slider. On phones / ROMs were it does work properly, you sometimes still have to press the unlock button manually before you can do anything.
This had annoyed me for ages and I couldn't find a solution, so since I am learning C++ at uni, I decided to try and teach myself Win32 programming and create a a program to fix it. The result was this little utility, my first windows mobile app
The program basically just sits and waits for an incoming call, and when the system notifies it of one, if the device is locked it waits for the unlock screen to pop up and then very quickly presses the '*' key. The result is that the device unlocks before the screen messes up, allowing you to see the dialler! The app is very lightweight (executable is only ~6KB), fast (native code), and does not use the CPU whilst idle since it makes use of the windows messaging notification system. Should theoretically work on any resolution on any device, but I've only tested it on my Touch Pro2 (WVGA).
I originally made this just for myself, but XDA Developers has been so useful to me over the years I thought it would be nice to share it with you guys For this reason it is provided as is, I may or may not add to it. I'll try and fix any bugs and stuff if they arise, but I'd like to keep it a simple, lightweight app.
[size=+1]VERSION HISTORY:[/size]
1.0 - Initial Release
1.1 - Multilingual support. If v1.0 works for you, you don't have to upgrade but you can if you like.
Fixed the bug that causes program to crash if not using an English ROM.
Removed message box that tells you you're using the sliding lock. Program now just exits silently.
CAB file now changes the registry key to disable the sliding lock screen for you.
[size=+1]INSTALLATION:[/size]
I've attached the EXE in a zip file, simply unzip, place it on your device somewhere and run it to activate the program. Run it again to exit the program. You might like to place a shortcut in \Windows\Startup. The program will not run if you have the WM6.5 sliding lock enabled, you need to have set:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shell\LockScreen] "Enable"= dword:00000000 (obviously).
I've also made a cab file which just simply places the EXE in \Program Files\DeviceLockXT, and creates a startup shortcut and the reg key for you, if you prefer
If you already have DeviceLockXT installed and are installing a newer version, you probably need to stop the old one from running first, and you should probably uninstall the old CAB before installing the new one. I don't know what difference it will make if any.
Enjoy!
DISCLAIMER: In the unlikely event that this program damages your device / causes you to lose data / kills your cat / whatever, I am not responsible. Use at your own risk.
Feel free to include it in a custom ROM if you like!
This looks interesting. Like you, I also do not like the latest lock screen (I've been searching forever for a better one). Does yours support PIN lock? And if you wouldn't mind, I think it'd be cool to see a screenshot (or just a google image), I'm not sure if I remember the classic lock screen you are referring to...
Certainly! Images added & first post updated
The reason I like it is that it isn't a lock screen as such, more of a lock softkey. This allows you to see through to the lovely HTC flip clock when the phone is locked / you turn it on to see the time. You only see the rather ugly looking grey screen when you want to unlock the device.
The program will run if you have PIN lock enabled, but there is no need to use the program in this case, it will literally sit there doing nothing. If you are using the PIN lock then the dialler screen works fine, at least on my phone anyway
To use the Windows Classic Lock Screen with a PIN just set:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shell\LockScreen]
"Enable"=dword:00000000
Then enable a PIN in Settings > Lock and you're good to go! No need to install my program You can also set:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shell\LockScreen]
"ShowLockScreenPicker"=dword:00000001
To get an extra tab in Settings > Lock which lets you change lock screen without editing the registry.
EDIT: There is not supposed to be a space between the c and r in LockScreen in the reg keys, don't know why the forum does that.
I'm also a fan of the "Windows Classic Lock Screen", and have encountered the same problem that you describe!
So thanks a lot for this great tool, I'm trying it ASAP.
i see your point of locking and seeing at the same time your home screen right there and then and i think i'm liking it. i'll give it a try. any chance to change the "ugly" gray unlock screen to something else? a simple black one would be good for me, or better still to a customized background.
edit: btw, does this work on stock wm 6.5? it says 6.5+ in your post.
Yup, I meant 6.5+ as in 6.5 and above (including both 6.5 and 6.5.x)
Not that I know of, the grey screen is part of the windows mobile locking program itself so I don't think it can be easily changed. On some ROMs I have tried the grey screen is skipped entirely, unlocking straight away when you press the softkey, but this is tied to something at the ROM level I think. So it's possible, but I don't have the time or ability to figure it out
Another way to do it would be to write your own locking program from the ground up that mimics the standard windows classic one, then you could do what you like, which interestingly is what I tried initially. But it was much harder than I thought! Defeats the point of utilising what is already on your phone though, which is what I like to to (minimal 3rd party software).
I repeat my program is NOT a stand alone lockscreen, but a utility to hopefully make the built in one work properly. In my opinion the windows classic lock is fine as it is, apart from the issue my program aims to fix
Great job!
This little app works very well and it does what it promises.
The grey screen is something that I've seached how to change for quite some time, but haven't found nothing. It would be very cool if we could edit it!
This is just awesome...thanks so much for sharing...
What about cooking this program into ROM? Is it fine to do so?
Yeah sure, it says so at the very end of the first post (under 'Disclaimer')
Uch, sorry, I never read disclaimers or other important notes.
Keep up great work. I'll include this software into my ROMs if I don't find anything annoying
thank you very much.this problem is annoying me for a long time,i'll have a try.is this work well,i'll get a reply.wish it work well and jack use it in his roms~
It's work very well in my phone, thank you very much~good job~
Been using this for a day or so now...no complains...works as intended. Thank you!
i find a problem with the app.when i use the app,the screenlight is turn on and turn off,it's change all the time.when i use the swith button to turn off the screen light, the screen light will turn on soon.and if i close the app ,the screen light became well.what's the wrong?can you help me ?
I'm not sure what would be causing that behaviour, what device are you using? What version of windows mobile / ROM are you using? Do you have any other screen lock type apps installed?
It is nice
but unfortunately it works only for WM6.1
i hope i can find one for WM6.5

ICS Official changes

Ok folks, what Im going to do here is go through some of the major things I have noticed since installing the official ICS but before I do that, let me give my two sentence review.
Its nice. If you are wondering what the Note SHOULD have performed like on launch, this is it. MUCH improved scrolling, better performance and slightly more aggressive app handling.
Ok, I lied, three sentences.
Changes:
NOTE that I will NOT be covering changes to the launcher portion of ICS.
1. Overall performance is better. Using Go Launcher, with the app drawer set to 6x6, it scrolls MUCH more smoothly. The market scrolls much smoother, settings, the same. It isnt 'butter' but it is much more acceptable now, not stuttering to the point of overshooting apps.
2. Notifications menu now has two new toggles - Flight Mode and Power Savings. There is now also a fast Settings button that will take you straight into the Android Settings app.
3. The power menu (long pressing your screen on/power button) has had accessibility moved to the top of the menu (if you had this enabled) and now has a 'Reboot phone' option (YAY!!)
4. ALL system apps that CAN be linked to the market are now correctly linked. This means your list of installed apps will be a bit longer (when looking in the play store list) and also means that these apps will be able to be updated without manually searching for each one by one.
5. There are obvious signs of the original UI ICS all over the place, notably the spinning circle but you'll see it everywhere.
6. Improved battery life, for the amount I have used the phone, its at a much higher percentage than it normally would have been.
One quick point to interject, apps can now be disabled

I know this worked on some of the ICS roms, so I just looked and verified that even though you cannot uninstall some of the bloat (without root), you can disable it . For example, I can disable Swype and install Swype Beta now. I hate AT&T Navigator, so I disabled it. If it cannot be uninstalled, disable it.
(settings --> applications --> all --> select the app and uninstall any updates --> disable) kinda like freezing the apps without root

Here are a few more that I just disabled, thanks for this tip
AT&T Navigator
Email (I use the gmail app)
Google+
Now. the rest of this is the stuff under settings. Im going to cover what I recognize to be new.
Under Settings:
First off, you'll notice that everything is now categorized into different groups now, making finding things in Settings a bit easier.
Wireless and Network
Tapping on Wifi or Bluetooth now takes you to the screens to configure the advanced settings for these features. Tapping 'On/Off' on the right side enables or disables the radios.
Data Usage
Here is where you can set up your billing cycle dates and put hard caps on your PHONE to keep your data usage under what your carrier allows. Fairly straight forward but make sure you set your billing date up correctly or this will be of NO use.
More
Here you will find NFC (YAY), Android Beam (send data between two devices using NFC), and Wifi Direct (connect two devices with a wifi antenna without the need for a router/hub).
Device
Call
Nothing new here, just a few things moved around a bit.
Sound
Again, nothing new, just shuffled a bit to make things easier to get to. Note that the menu button now no longer brings up any advanced settings here, they are all accessible by navigating the screen options.
Display
A few things moved around a bit BUT a new feature, Show battery percentage in notifications bar. NICE Also, Gyroscope Calibration is now an option.
Power Saving
Unchanged
Storage
Prettier but unchanged, a little bit more information but not much.
Battery
Unchanged
Applications
Unchanged, tho it should be noted that you can hit your menu button while in this screen to sort the list by Size
Personal
Accounts and Sync
Unchanged
Location Services
Unchanged
Security
Big one here but this is where you will find face unlock and even a voice recognition feature that can I believe be used in conjunction with another method to unlock your phone. I havent had much time to look at it yet.
Language and Input
Largely unchanged but its a bit more intuitive to change your keyboard now. And, for an interesting 'feature' that Samsung forgot to disable, Pointer speed, which has NO effect on our phone, this option is only for phones with a trackpad (Samsung forgot to disable this - made me smile).
Back up and reset
Nice, this option used to be buried under privacy and is now brought out into the main settings list. Much easier to find, it
System
Dock
Unchanged
Pen Settings
New option, Hovering pen icon (shows a pen icon over the screen where the pen is hovering)
One Handed Operation
3 completely new settings, to configure the calculator, dialer, and unlock pattern to be configured for use with one hand (clumps everything on one side of the screen so that you can say dial numbers with just your thumb rather than the usual having to hold the phone with one hand and dial with your other).
Date and Time
Unchanged
Accessibility
Two new options, Speak passwords. Havent had time to check to see if this works for unlocking the phone as well, but if it does, that would be silly. Tap and Hold delay can now be configured as well as allowing or disallowing the installation of web scripts.
Motion
New option, Double Tap to allow voice dictation easily. Sweet
Developer Options
Several new things you can make visible for the nerdy types but Im not going to cover them here since they are really only for developers .
About Phone
Unchanged
Ok, that should give you an idea of what to look for, if someone else wants to cover the touchwiz stuff (adding or removing widgets/icons/homescreens) I can add it.
Also, if there is anything I missed or got wrong...
Ok, one more new thing, the phone now charges correctly off your USB port, ie. charges faster.
Awesome write up! Do you have any idea how -- or if -- we can add app shortcuts to the lockscreen like the SGSIII?
PS: I have Widgetlocker but would prefer to use the system for this if possible.
Under Settings Developer Options you have the ability to adjust the Window Animation scale and also Transition Animation Scale.
When I set these to 0 then launchers like Go launcher behave much quicker.

whats the downside to GPU rendereing? decreased battery life?

My understanding is, one of the major improvements made to ICS is the ability to offload some of the processing to the processor / gpu depending on current load - ie. cpu is extremely busy at the moment so offload some processing to the gpu (or vice versa). Enabling this option I believe forces the gpu to handle everything regardless of the state of the cpu.
Reports have claimed enabling this option has mixed results. If the app supports gpu acceleration, you will see better performance. If it doesnt, the app will actually have worse performance and may actually crash the app in some rare cases. All ICS updated apps support this and chances are, if the software you have on your Note has been updated to support ICS, you have no issues.
So, the advice from the streets is to either keep is disabled and pretend you didnt see it or enable it and keep in the back of your mind that you might need to disable it occasionally for certain apps. The performance improvement is supposedly pretty minimal.

Yea, there are a couple of negatives about this however. Any native Android apps will loose some of the fancy 'little' touches (for example fading when going from one screen to another in settings). Some have reported however a small improvement in battery life doing this so its up to you. Persoinally, performance wise, I didnt notice anything differently with these set to 0. But then again, I have only one homescreen.
One other note, I just got off a 2.5 hour phone call from a full charge. Ended the call with 70% battery left. This is a HUGE improvement over GB where I likely would have been around 50% left.
not really usefull but in about phone, if you tap the android version a bunch of times you get a 8bit android in a icecream sammich.
also after the update I have no more black crush!!!

I am sorry to tell you that you are incorrect. Here is information about that toggle and other android graphics issues straight from the woman who designed the OS.
http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...I-C08yEO63mvHG6BQ&sig2=bamQd77PjEBd050c6s96EQ
TLDR:
Before ICS, android used the GPU to accelerate the animations of the windows, but it left the choice of how to render graphics inside the windows to the app developer. What the toggle does, is to force GPU rendering inside the windows, even if the app did not ask for it. There are two downsides to this forced rendering. The forced rendering can break compatibility. It can also increase memory usage unnecessarily.

I see I wasn't the only one to notice that the brightness/ notification bar trick doesn't work anymore. I really hope they bring it back.
What about what is mentioned in
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/SupportOwnersFAQPopup.do?faq_id=FAQ00047453&fm_seq=51497
Who is the author of "My Story App" mentioned above? There are a couple different apps that it might be in the Play Store but I didn't see any mention of "S-Pen" in them.
Found it from:

bwwaahhhaaaa.... sorry but when I opened this thread it landed on you post.... and I read it out of context
Just received an email from Samsung saying to upgrade to ICS (did it via kies when 1st available). The email stated there is a newly introduced "Desktop View". This is for the default web browser.....
If you want to switch to "Desktop" browser mode, bring up the settings and select "Desktop view". So now its easier to switch between mobile and desktop browser modes.
Before you had to do "about:useragent"
Something to add to the OP; you can now also disable most stock apps.
