Niki .tsk Vs Xperia .tsk help required. - Touch Dual, MDA Touch Plus ROM Development

Hi all,
I've been leeching and surfing on this forum for quite a while now and never really took the time to post a thread when i had a question. Normally i'd search the entire place but in this case i just can't find a good solution.
So here is my first question:
A friend of mine got himself the SE- Xperia, I took a good look at it and liked the theme's a lot.
Once I received the files (Root;my documents) and tapped on one of them they didn't show up in the todayscreen wich provides .tsk themes like T-mobile1+2 etc.
Now I know I can do such things as installing a new ROM etc, but perhaps thats a little to much for such an issue.
I'm not expecting a complete walkthrough, but perhaps if someone could help me a little i'd appreciate it.
Many thanks and greets from The Netherlands

Dindnt quite understood, you want just the wallpaper?
---edit---
This one works on mine, but the bars dont get flat black.... Nothing that cant be fixed, of course.
Got it from the full theme with extras, here:
http://www.modaco.com/index.php?automodule=downloads&showfile=2479

Thank you very much,
I'll check that one out tommorrow to see if it works on my phone.

Have a look at ThemeGenCE. It allows you to customise the tsk for your phone:
http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=1523

And still the .tsk file isn't showing up in the todayscreen (Start>Settings>Personal>Today>Appearance)
I got stuck at the third point:
) Connect your device to your desktop by ActiveSync and explore it.
2) Transfer all the unrar'd files and folders the My Documents folder of your Pocket PC, except the rlToday folder which should be transferred to the Program Files folder.
3) Apply the Xperia skin (Start>Settings>Personal>Today>Appearance).
4) Apply the Wisbar Advance skin (Start>Programs>Wisbar Advance>Theme>Use a Theme File): \My Documents\Wisbar Advance v2.x\Xperia\Xperia.skn
5) Apply the rlToday skin (Start>Settings>Personal>Today>Items>rlToday>Options): Skin: Xperia. Note that the download also contains WM6 style .png icons if you are using PPC2003SE/WM5 and want to use more modern looking shortcuts. If you don't live in Singapore, please edit the skin.xml file to the country of your choice (notepad works).
Anyone?
Thanks

you probably can get more info on the official modaco post, lol...

He may have meant .tsk files, but he asked for posting themes, which encompases more than just wallpaper files.
As for dialpad cabs, yes, I knew that, but I don't use any custom dialpads, hence, I didn't post any.
hello victoradjei
yes! I want to .tsk file on X7500,
thank you
Ok, if thats all you really want, just type into google 'vga ppc wallpaper' and you should get more hits than you could shake a stick at. Probably thousands of .tsk files to choose from.
that's definetly not true (thousands), and if you have realvga on your athena then most vga wallpapers (part of the theme) won't work properly. so you have to look for realvga themes.
Your right, it's probably many, many thousands. And who said anything about realvga??? You are the first.
If you have WAD, you'd be able to use ANY wallpaper you want, no matter the size, since you'd be able to stretch it (or shrink as the case may be). You wouldn't need .tsk files either. You could use png, jpg, gif, tga, etc..., and then it wouldn't be thousands of choices it would near endless choices.
Oh wait, you already can use jpg files. You just have to do it through the included photo viewer, so you can disable the transparency.
As for resolution, use your favorite pc photo manipulation software the change the image size, and/or convert to jpg, if needed and you don't have WAD. There, now your choices are near endless, and you don't even need to have WAD afterall.
Obviously, I'm sure you already knew all that, though.
there may be people who don't wanna ruin there system by installing WA, the biggest system break of all besides phonealarm and battery pack (my poor device)!!!!
and there may be users who don't wanna put a photo on the today screen when you hardly can read anything anymore.
and there may be people who are just looking for the htc theme and don't need anyone to tell them how they can find vga themes thorugh google (like the threadstarter).
and many thousands of vga themes? that just tells me how little you know about that and that you haven't searched at all!
I agree about WA, I hate it.
I found a simple Crossbow theme in this forum that has no photo, looks nice and works on the Ameo(Athena) ok. Just search for Crossbow Theme.
I also found a phone theme (cant remember where) that makes the T-Mob dialpad look nice again but I have a problem. Its very dark, and the text at the top is black!
Does anybody know the Reg Key to change the colour of font on the phone dialer?
I cant read the network or number etc.

Why don't you try searching first before pretending to know a thing or two, of which you obviously don't.
I found 243,000 pages relating to my search of VGA PPC Wallpaper. Yes 99% are rubbish (I'm sure a couple of dozen are not), but on just page ONE, I found 300-400 .tsk's in VGA, between websites. Now if you have something CONSTRUCTIVE to say, perhaps let the OP know where he may find the themes he's looking for, then post that. Otherwise, go sit in the back of the class and pay attention. You may learn something, yet.
Since you din't read my post well, I'll say it once again, you DON'T need WAD (I never even mentioned WA!) to install any wallpaper you want. Use the WM5 photo viewer to set the background image and remove transparency. You don't need to use a photograph (making it hard to see text as you put it), you can use ANY graphic file you find or make.
If one prefers not do these things, and is still intent on only using .tsk files, that fine, there are tons out there. So don't start causing problems. It seems I'm the only one who has even tryed to help out in some way, so far.

Its a combination of software, including Wisbar Advance 2, Wisbar Advance Desktop (both by Lakeridge Software), SBSH Pocketbreeze, Phonealarm, and Weather Panel. There are some really impressive themes over at http://www.lakeridgesoftware.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=34. So far, no compatibility issues, lock ups, or anything. PM me if need any more info.

Thanks for the info. If I do migrate to that package and its themes I'd want to make sure I keep two features: 1) 3G indicator at top to confirm that type of connection, 2) Indications of each email account and number of unread messages. Any VGA themes you recommend that keep those features? Found one here but don't see either of the above: http://www.kolumbus.fi/anders.ruohio/wa/organizervga.html

1) To my knowledge, the 3G icon has not been identified seperately from other connections in any Wisbar skins. For me, I did not care, since I can't do anything about it anyway, but I can see if it were essential to find a 3G area, it would be needed to know.
2) I'm not sure whether phonealarm can do this or not. I vaguely remember reading posts about custom email alerts (didn't know what that meant then or now). The phonealarm forums are located athttp://www.pocketmax.net/smf/index.php
I wish you luck in finding what your looking for.

CommManager Skinning

Hey fellas.
I am sure it's been discussed before and my searches to find something fruitful have been met with limited success:
I am looking for a way (if possible) to skin my comm manager. I have the 6 Button lateral one from Custel's V1.1 and not the 8 or 10 button manager.
Any idea's?
You should find one in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=316107
I'm using the HTC Kaiser Comm Manager Fixed.
I see the comm managers but I am trying to find a way to skin my current one. Is there a way to editthe skin on my device? Where are the skins for the comm manager kept at on the device?
All of the graphics for the Comm manager exist in windows\
If you find those files and edit/replace them, you can change the whole way comm manager works.
Problem is, every button is its own image and each has 3+ states (on, off, disabled, or other options). On the 10 button comm manager, that means there are 80+ files to edit.
Thanks Dishe.
Looks like I have a lot of cutting & pasting...
Update:
For anyone looking, on my Alltel PPC6800 I found the files to edit in the \windows dir. The backgrounds are the P_BG & L_BG (portrait & landscape). The status icons are labeled as Status_Off & Status_On.

What someone should do (I'd do it if I had the time!) is create a photoshop .psd file with all of these graphics assembled as slices. Then we can change the background color, etc. and export them as individual files without having to manually edit each one.
In the mean time, the long way is the only way...

i just got done getting all the files on to my card... and now on my computer.. should i make a PSD or just zip it and then people can do w/e they would like?
i have all the PNG files in the windows dir.
I am trying to do what you are but I posted a thread about the access rights of the files for being able to replace them... are you not running into the same problem?
It wouldnt let me modify them at first but once I copied them to my computer, clicked on properties and removed the read-only, all was well. After amendment, they copied over the original on my device with no problems...
Oh wow I will give that a shot... thank you!
I am not sure how that would work though, seeing that the files on the device would still be read-only and shouldn't be allowed to copy over. When I changed the settings in TC it didn't save them either...
Nvm I figured it out! Thx

dc13, getting the files are not a big deal... I have a decomposed ROM image on my computer with all the files that go inside it, so I didn't even need to look on the PPC. I just viewed all files by thumbnail, and grabbed the 80+ files that looked like they belong to the comm manager. BTW, not every .png is for the CM. Some of them can be HTC Home, or the Dialer, etc...
I would have put them up if people were actually having a hard time getting them. The problem is changing them in a uniform fashion!
For example, if you're familiar with photoshop, and you want to change the gradient background to be, say, red and black instead of grey and black, you'll need to create a full sized gradient background that starts from the bottom of the screen and goes to the top (just like the current background image which starts at the bottom as a darker color and ends as a lighter gray on the top), and then make sure somehow that every icon has the appropriate part of the background appearing behind it in the png. This is very time-consuming to do to 80 files.
However, if you had the time and knowledge of Photoshop and ImageReady slices, you could create ONE .psd file that contained all the .pngs arranged in their proper places. Then, change the background of this larger picture, and do whatever you need to do with the icons (which would have to be arranged as layers), then you click to save it, you can have it automatically split it into all the slices needed as individual .png files.
Once this is set up, skinning the comm manager will take a matter of minutes. The problem is that this is probably 2-4 hours worth of work to set up, and I personally don't have the time to dedicate to it right now, especially since its not a paying gig.
I put together a quick guide to creating a Today, Slide2Unlock, Startup, Dialer and Commanager theme. It's in the Hacking & Modifying section of the forum...

It's not that difficult to create a commanager skin, but it does take time to make it look good.
I currently have skinned my commager. I am using the commanager that poorlyduck uses in his theme package but mine has a new vista look.

Manila Dialer Black text workaround/fix

Unfortunately this is only a workaround but it is an effective and easy solution to an irritating problem ! the idea is to change the background out for a white one so the black text shows !! to that end I have included all the files you need to sort this out !
all you have to do is use the reg editor (task manager) included with ap 4.0 tap on the process's tab and kill a process called cprog.exe (this runs the phone service and has access rights to the files you want to modify). After that copy the included files into the windows folder, i did it whilst using active sync) through browse mobile device on my computer for simplicity after editing the pics.
I am also including the originals incase you want to go back !! of course this is now opening the door for any manor or wonderful custom backgrounds for the dialler screen, and infact a whole host of other HTC software including the mp3 trimmer, which also has it's "BG" pics in the windows folder.
anyone who is running 96dpi like me will have noticed that there is space at the bottom of the dialer pad that allows you to see the app running behind the phone, this is now easy to fix and requires these files to be modified in size to cover the currently vacant area, although idealy we need to work out a way to make the bars twice as large in 96DPI to make them finger friendly !
If get round to it I will make the adjustments for 96DPI but it is good as is for all resolutions
and here are the originals
i think the cab you have is bad. i remember i uploaded the addons with a manilla cab that was a bit messed up and i think the text there was messed up. a few min after i uploaded a fixed addons rar.. the text should be find in the new addons cab. i remember i used it to before and there was no text problems.

Ho hum, that took me ages to do and was quite clever by my standards. I only upgraded to AP4.0 yesterday, as I was waiting for a fix to downgrade the SPL on my last ameo before sending it for a warranty repair, in the end I could not wait any longer and just chanced sending in my old phone, which is good, as I now have a new phone
all this is relevant to what you said because I downloaded AP4.0 and the add-ons as soon as they came out, and have not really sifted through the thread because it is huge!
mental note to self RTFM, I could have spent my time productively going through the thread instead of inverting colours in paintbrush !

[MOD]TouchFlo 2D On Athena...

Actually this is a modifying thread for TF2D (TouchFlo 2D)! So maybe some experts can help and make this into VGA compatible then all the Athena users can use this. BTW i have this installed on my device and it works like a charm! But the problem is that it takes only 1/4 of the screen cause its QVGA... I asked Herg (the one who released this as a beta) and he told me that we have to :
1.Dissassemble and reassemble the exe files
2.Making pictures 2 times bigger (actually we can use diamond so we can skip this step)
3.Changin some xml files.
Now I am asking all you guys that can do this to help us and let Athena users taste this thing...
All the credits go to yourselves and definitely Athena users and me appreciate what you'll do for us.

Hi, I am interested! i have been hunting around to find plug-in for my today screen, finally touchflo 2D has been hacked but it does not fit on my screen. I will look forward to your released!
i am interesting in it ,but i really don't know how to modify this software,i ever installed the touchflo3D in my Athena, but it worked so slowly that i couldn't accept.
so i will look forward to ur released either.
I myse;f really dont know how to mod the exe and dll files but I know what are the tools and (maybe) the steps... but I can really help with graphic files and other stuff but I dont know programming and other stuff.... Need some experts, who can play with exe files
Help
Hi Guys, as an x7510 owner I would like to see touchflo 2d ported to vga too and I may help with it too, right now I have some work to finish but hopefully in a few days I should be able to have a look on things till then could someone get me a "build" or "zip" that contains the original Diamond pictures (or point me to one) as those all already at vga mode so why redo something that already exists and then I could focus on the other changes.
If someone already picked up this work and got to somewhere please let me know so we combine our forces
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=427531
suggests editing the XML will allow different screen sizes.
I created a new thread on this subject which should cover this request too, please post your comments there as it is not just HTC Athena but all HTC VGA devices should work with it:

It is very simple, go to the last thread linked, there is a post there that tells you what to do, you download the original m2d, whatever the lastest version is. then after installing you overwrite the files with the VGA ones to the windows folder..
I've just re-read the topic and it makes sense to me.
It's very easy to do.
0---------
Installations / Download
To install please follow the steps found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=398173 <--- basically get the last file listed and install it from here, otherwise the original poster will have to redo is post everytime the other thread is updated.
and after you have everything up and running (even in the little left corner of your screen but working) then go to "Start->Settings->Today->Items" and uncheck "TouchFlo" press OK then download this zip file and extract the content to \Windows\ directory on your device.
TouchFlo2D VGA - Ver. 0.1.3
http://rapidshare.com/files/15138227...0.1.3.zip.html
Then go back to "Start->Settings->Today->Items" and check "TouchFlo" again press ok and the full resolution TouchFlo should appear.
IMPORTANT: It seems with the latest Manila2d release (1.00...) the files are installed in read only state so you won't be able to overwrite the files unless you remove the Read only state from the files which are all files in \Windows directory starting with HH_..... and HTCHomeSettings.xml and then all files in \Windows\ManilaGFX
----
You need a proper file program, the one that's built into windows mobile is pants. It can't overwrite files in rom or read only.
I'm presuming since you have an athena you know something about windows mobile, these aren't novice devices, if you don't then I'd really really advise you to do some reading.
For the sake of ease, download total commander, it's free and very powerful, search the forum using the search at the top and you'll find millions of links to it.
In /windows folder after installing the original m2d (not the VGA version) using total commander, select SHOW>select/unselect files> type in hh* and everything beginning with those will appear selected, While they are selected (highlighted) press FILE>properties and untick the readonly box.
Do the same to all the files in /windows/manillagfx
Now open where ever you saved the vga files and copy the entire lot across to windows, and accept overwrite all
@fards thx a lot.. very detailed description so even I managed to install manila 2d
TF2D Feedback
Moderator - I am posting here as my comments are based on use on X7501 with factory ROM, if this is an incorrect place please mirror to appropriate section - there are too many to choose from!
First impression on update 20 - EXCELLENT WORK EVERYONE!
Overall device performce only slightly reduced, all programs work as before, touchflo finger slider on bottom works very smoothly.
The Home, People, Messages, Mail, Weather, Maps Search, Settings and Programs Tabs ALL work Perfectly!
Feedback for next update on Tabs.
Internet - Can a GUI selection of browser be incorporated so registry edit is not necessary to change default browser? So one can choose IE, factory Opera or other.
Photos and Videos - Pictures do not flip with finger swipe & picture takes up one quarter of frame
Audio Manager - Library and Player screen uses only top left quarter of screen, the rest is scrambled static in library and black in player. In Library, the text does not refresh in static area, and piles up into solid bar. Would it be easier (or possible) to simply link to media player 10 like HTC Home, get rid of audio manager, then redundant software is not needed?
With these updates it would work perfectly as if OEM.
Are you running successfully in Landscape?
Hi anx7501. I have a x7510 and have also loaded the Manila ver 20 and then pijulius TouchFlo for VGA devices over the top. However, I have had limited success in getting the screen to show as I would like in landscape.
Beacuse of the size of the clock and lack of space in landscape I've been trying to recode the HTCHomeSettings.xml so that Alarm, Call History and Calendar will all continue to show in Portrait, but only Calendar shows in Landscape leaving room for the Tabs along the bottom. I have atempted to do that by editing the lines for Alarm and Call History by inserting zeros thus: <Property name="IDHMWG_MISSEDCALLBTN_RECT" id="30" value="24,304,456,364, 0,0,0,0" /> but alas it is not working.
Have you managed to "crack the code" on this, or come up with an alternative solution - maybe a smaller clock?
Also have you found any alternative skins that will brighten up the device from the basic black?
Finally for some reason my Brightness slider is stuck in the left position. I don't remember this being the case when I had Manila ver 17 loaded. Does your slider work OK?
Hi robjhellis,
Regarding the landscape issue, because this was created for device like diamond with puny screen, it was intended for portrait so I haven't bothered to play with it, also landscape requires an extensive redraw in addition to resizing - I just don't have the time. Though someone in another thread has already resized M2D to work in landscape; however, I don't remember if it was for QVGA or VGA, when I find it again I will post the link here.
Try looking at this for landscape mode.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=436753&highlight=m2d+landscape
I have a Mugen Power 2400 mha battery which lasts a full day, sometimes a little more, with factory ROM. With M2D installed, it chewed through the battery in half a day so for that reason I didn't adjust the brightness and left it alone. The programs I concentrated on were graphic intensive like Adobe reader and dwf viewer. After a few days of only half-day use between recharge, I hard reset and went back to HTC-Home VGA which provides similar tabs (weather, programs), dosen't chew through the battery and works in landscape. I think that because of the difference between devices with factory TF2D - ours has to max out CPU & GPU to operate smooth killing the battery. Short of creating new video driver specifically for our ATI chip, I don't think there's a workaround - btw how's your battery life?
There is a thread in Development and Hacking with M2D skins posted, try there and see if you find something you like.
I really like what I saw and admire the work evryone did, but I rely on my advantage heavily and didn't want to have to recharge or change battery at lunch - sadly I had to drop it. Hope you had/have better luck with yours.
Thanks for your follow-up. I discoverd that the Brightness slider issue was a known bug for vers. 20 & 21 of manila. A fix patch has been created and appended to post 2 (the fixes post) on the manila thread.
As for mbarvian's work on landscape, whilst its great work it does not appear to do anything for us on the VGA advantage/athena. With nthe keyboard attached I can use the left and right arrow keys to move between pages so that is a definate work around to not havig the tabs showing.
hey do you guys know how to install touch flo on the att 8125

Welllllllllllllllllll first you have to define "theme" there are alot of people with a Dinik Icon set and Dinik slider.. paired with a wallpaper of choice and call it a theme..
Then there is stuff like Buuf s theme and OrangeStreet that dig a little deeper than just a few icons and skins..
Then.. there is the THEMES... but before diving into a THEME.. know that even something like OrangeStreet (my first theme i did with ConanTroutMan) has over 1300 editted files in it.. and this was before i even knew about pngs in the windows folder or .dll mods , signing and unsigning certs, swype and t9 skins.. hell we could go on for days..
SOOOOOOOOOO
imo
Start by skinning all the manilla files you can find..
Then take alot of the ones you dont know .. and write a number on them.. 1-whatever.. and upload them to your phone.. this will help you find the stuff that wasnt obvious on the first pass..
THEN edit the pngs in the windows folder of the phone..
THEN Open PE explorer and start cracking open dlls..
which requires signing and unsigning certs.
By now you will have lost 45 pounds...AND your wife ...and you dog will have died of starvation.. But you will have a theme that is nothing more than a heavy duty skin.
So then you learn .lua and registry editting.. lua there are entire college courses on lua btw.. coding.. and xml... and use this to move and push some stuff around.. and THEN youll have a full theme.
Thanks, for the quick reply.
Well i think i have to start at the beginning:
so how can I extract the manila png files to edit them?
Use CFC_GUI and plus your phone in and turn it on.. .then click device.. import from device.. then export to pngs.. aim it at a folder.. and you will get a whole fist full of icons to edit.
The second easy to get to set you already know.. phone/windows/_.pngs
and if you cant get one to insert and replace itself, via copy and paste to replace.. then use WinCe to cab it and replace it.
Just make sure when you are done.. pile them all up in one cab so there arent a million cabs on your phone.
Read a Tutorial on CFC_GUI.. you can edit about 1200 files using just that.
Btw i cant wait to see what you come up with.. and if you need anyhelp that you dont wanna post on here (some ideas arent meant to be shared till AFTER they work) feel free to pm me.
This is where it all started for me......
