Is the Titan dying? - Mogul, XV6800 ROM Development

I notice that there has been a lag in the ROMS and updates for the WM6.5 Betas. I'm not sold on WM6.5 yet so I'm thinking about going back to WM6.1. However, given recent news that some carriers are pulling the Titan product in favor of a newer model I'm starting to wonder if the phone may be losing it's luster and on the outs. I love my Titan, but am becoming frustrated with it's lack of memory (hence performance). To me WM6.5 seems to be clunkier than WM6.1, making the Titan even more sluggish. If this is the case it would make sense carriers would stop selling it in favor of a newer model with more memory and performance capabilities.
BTW thanks to everyone on the forums who have given a piece of themselves so that we all can enjoy the fruits of their labor.

I am in favor with you. I really enjoy my 6800 and I just updated to the vwz TP. I do not plan to selll the 6800.
I only updated because the development is moving to the TP and like you so frustrated with no memory. They did reduce the vzw TP memory which sucks so many are getting the Sprint version and making it work on vzw which is easy to do which has more memory. All the info is at ppcgeeks which where I read more now.
There are many roms over there..overload...but I found that SSK 1.5 provides the best memory for the TP since it has less. Device is fast, gps all works with the right patches but I do miss the 6800 however this new model is growing on me...

I have started looking at newer models, but I still like most of what the Titan has to offer. I wonder if anyone has come out with a clean version of Android on the Titan? I think the biggest problem was the lack of memory.

I think that many of us will just continue supporting the titan as changes happen, and not move forward until there is a better phone for us. I don't like the TP completely, even on sprint cause the titan is so near perfect in design. Ram and resolution are the only issues for me, I love the buttons and roller and would love to be able to open it up and solder a 2GB chip onboard.
Android is interesting, but there may be software and hardware issues that could plague it from being a great solution, but I would love to see it work.

Of course the Titan is dying. It's been replaced by all the carriers with some variant of the Touch Pro, and supposedly the Touch Pro 2 will be out sometime this year. That would make the Titan 2 generations of phones old. Not many people want to spend time making new ROM's for a 2-3 year old phone when there are much better phones out there to support.
It has been, by far, the best phone I've ever owned. Durable, decent reception, voice clarity, battery life (using an upgraded battery from Seidio), and I love Windows Mobile. I've just never been a Blackberry guy, never loved the Apple OS, and still not quite sold on Android.
But its just like any other electronics equipment... newer and better things come out eventually, and the old stuff fades away. I've resisted going to the Touch Pro with Verizon specifically because of its reduced RAM (compared to ATT/Sprint versions), and because I dont like the keyboard layout. I'm also not a major proponent of getting the Sprint phone then using it on VZW's network, just cause I'm not comfortable with that idea for whatever reason.
For now, my XV6800 lives on. Sure, my vibrate doesnt work anymore, but oh well. I still find it to be incredibly reliable for every day use, and until the TP2 or something along those lines comes out, its the phone for me.

My contract ends this December so I have a while to go with my Titan. Either way I love it and I use Sk-tools which helps a lot! I do like all the hardware buttons.
Really I don't see myself getting another Windows Phone unless it has Windows Mobile 7.

titan scene is dying. the supports, at least here at xda has disappeared. the devs have moved on, unfortunately. i would love to work with some other devs to get android working on this phone, but its tough finding people who want to take on that task.
i think htc will be releasing a cdma phone with android soon, i might end up getting that... but in the mean time i am just running DCD's 3.2.6 with HTC Home. nice and simple, and quick.

the Titan is dying..quite honestly, I'm waiting on the Palm Pre to be out..I can't deal with the severe memory leaks most WM phones have

The titan is being out modelled yes, but the titan is still very much alive. All the 6.5 coming out have been successfully ported to the titan, and guess what it just keeps getting better.
Yes the earlier builds of 6.5 were sluggish but the builds coming out now are faaaaaast. Get to try one and you will not be too fast on ditching your old love for a new lover.

Whats Titan
Whats Titan anyways?

Not in the coffin yet...
It's fascinating to see all the different responses. I too have a contract until the later part of the year so I won't be moving to a new phone any time soon, but I am starting to look down the line. It is hard to think that my little friend will eventually be collecting dust in the closet by then, it has been, as someone stated, the best phone I've ever owned. Sure it has flaws like lack of memory, memory leaks, a small screen (although it did seem big at one time) and so on, but overall I think, with the help of communities like xda and others, the benefits far outweigh them. Funny thing is I finding I'm using less and less apps on the phone -not exactly sure why though.
BTW I don't like the new MSIE6 at all -does anyone know of any tips or tricks for it?

Vickylife007,
Which WM6.5 do you have in mind? There are so many out there and I believe I've tried most of them to the same results (I know their betas, so they aren't perfect yet).

I've been out of a contract for 6 months now. I like my Titan, it works pretty good, my limits, battery life (will there ever be a PDA phone battery that lasts a week with use ?) and memory limits.
I've said a few time on this site as well as PPCgeeks, I will not buy a new phone till we see some new features (more than a little more memory, newer screen and shape of phone), and from what I am reading that will come down the line in WM 7. Pretty much all the phones are about the same when it comes down to real specs, there is no reason to upgrade to a newer phone. Oh, yea, they look a little nicer, not worth that in my eyes
After all, with internet, GPS, a keyboard, and all the other little bells the Titan has, who really needs another phone ?

21193 is good, 21198 is great. Yeah they are all betas, they will remain so in name until there is an official release from MS, but they are stable for everyday use. If you like trying new things then try to catch up with the builds as they come out like two per week. I personally have had problems catching up.........................you may have a nack for this.

I'm the same way...... I had, at one point, 30-40 apps installed and 20-30 games. Then I realized most of them were things I NEVER used. The last time I flashed my phone to DCD 3.3.4, I decided to only install stuff I actually use.... which is maybe 10 apps and 5 games at most. The phone is so fast without all that extra junk.
I played with WM6.5, and honestly, not that impressed. I dont see a huge difference. Maybe WM7 will have something amazing and make an upgrade worthwhile.
I see myself eventually going to a different OS though, depending on what HTC cooks up for us.

WM7 will probably be too much for our Titans to handle; it may get obsoleted due to hardware requirements. my hope is for Linux (Android)! or whomever gives me Flash 10 first...

Android...
From my searches (granted they haven't been too in depth) it would appear nobody is really picking up on Android builds for the Titan. The ones out there now are just apps to run on top of WM, which kinda makes it pointless. It seems the lack of memory on the Titan is an issue for the Android OS to run on it's own.
Has anyone heard different?

I like to think of my Titan like the child that was born with an incurable genetic disease. I may love it and do all I can for it,but yes,in the end ,it is in fact dieing, and it started before it was even born. I just try to help it along doing all the things that other phones do and minimize its suffering while waiting for the inevitable.

Who will be switching over

Hi all,
I see a lot of familiar/famous faces here allready.
Would be good to know which Devs are porting over to the Raphael.
May also help with Development work if we have a list of Developers that will be here from the beginning.
So far I believe we have
Mamaich
Bepe
Olipro
CMonex
JJ
Dutty
Laurentius
myself
Who else will be joining us?
Cheers,
Beasty
I'll be too.

Looks like the old Universal team is back together
Myself included!
You can count me in for any help with ROM testing - my upgrade is due in 4 weeks and counting...
Well whenever this comes to ATT I'll compile another thread devoted to tweaking and removing all of the random crap that is bound to come with the ATT version...
Upgrade or no upgrade available on my contract, I'm getting this phone (but I can wait for a non-front camera version for about $200 less than the $904 price it's at right now.)
I'm certainly ready to jump on the Raphael bandwagon, but the details for the 3G radio for us yankees are still questionable. Until I see what the US version is, I'm not getting really excited about it. Other than a RAM/ROM/Processor upgrade, there isn't much of a gain. Also, until this thing gets in the hands of some XDA users, we won't know if they made a similar mistake as they did with the Kaiser in terms of drivers and hardware implementation.
HTC Omni with Android - yes. Another rehash of the Wizard, meh.

Pretty sure that TouchFlo 3D needs D3D acceleration to work?? The GFX drivers situation should be almost identical to the diamond, so best to take a gander at the diamond forum and see if any issues are apparent?
You're absolutely correct.
But let us not forget that HTC's devices from years ago perform better graphically then the Kaiser. Who'd have ever thought THAT would happen (especially considering the vast technological improvements)?!?!
I have been lurking on the Diamond forums keeping an eye on how things play out. We still haven't seen a US-based Diamond variant yet.

Yes McHale but even if that is the case the Touch Pro is running the same chipset as the Diamond (7201A) so people could just make hybrid ROMs incorporating the best of both devices. Next question.
I'm not talking about the video specifically, I'm talking about support and proper implementation of hardware. Believe me, I'm not bashing HTC. I have enough devices I can say I supported them quite a little. I'm saying we haven't seen a US model yet and until I see the model that will work in the states, we don't know how well it will be implemented.

I've done the same mate, the Raphael should arrive just before we fly off to Florida (hopefully) gives me plenty of time to work on some Roms whilst away (and a new toy to play with on the plane)
Stocks for pre-orders are running a bit low on most UK sites now though, so be quick if you do want one. Expansys did me one for £460 with case and cables TV Out etc. I imagine prices will rise slightly after release and demand will be pretty high. The Uni finally gets chance to have a rest in the Bottom-Drawer Beasty PDA vault.

Question to all the HTC Hero owners

I'm currently pondering buying a HTC Hero.
My question is though:
Would you still buy it right now or would you wait for the next android phone HTC is releasing (in the coming 2-3 months).
I'm currently torn between buying an Hero or waiting, I've read a bit about the HTC Dragon/Zoom 2 because it has a higher resolution, but the current specs state it has a 4.2 inch screen.
Which is way too large for me.
So, any current HTC Hero owners care to state their personal opinion on the matter?
Thanks
Would still buy it, love the design, and i have had it for over a month and been using it all the time .. It's the best mobile i ever bought!
Since a lot of android phones are coming out I would wait.
But if you are looking for a small and powerful device instead of a big smartphone then it's the right choice, in my opinion.
If you wait, you will always be waiting. The market moves so fast that there is almost a new device coming in 2-4 months that may or may not be better than what is out.
You can always Ebay it and buy another one if you want a newer phone.

Exactly.
I will be looking at the X3 when it is out, I was so keen on it I thought about waiting.
The hero is a great phone, bugs have been fixed and the Rom cookers are just getting going with it. Get the hero, enjoy it for a few months, suff it on ebay if you want a change and get something new in the spring- thats what I'm doing.
have it since it came out and the only thing i would change is the color, black or brown instead of white. nothing on the market beats it so yes, if i was buying now, i would buy Hero. HD2 brings great promises for future phones, but it's WinMo, so it's just a promise of Android to come with that hardware.

Why are you dissapointed with the white phone? Doesent it have some "extra" function that the brown and black doesent have? In my opinion it looks good..
would buy it again. the hardware is very decent, performancewise, featurewise & haptic-wise (a.k.a. it performs well, has all the nice sensors you could need and the look&feel is great also). the software has already been modded extensivly, and since the kernel sources are out since last week the real good stuff is still to come... if you wait then you will have to wait until the new device is released, then till it is rooted, then till someone cooks a decent rom, then for the kernel sources, then for someone to actually use the kernelsources... if you're not into doing this as the first person in the world then get an "old" (as in 'a few months on the market') device.
and just get the fact, you will never be up-to-date in the it business...
if you must go android, go hero.
if i had my time again, i'd go iphone...it's too 'early days' for android....
Buy the phone, it's really nice and it's always developing cos of the apps. I am happy with my phoen had it 3 weeks now and it will last well.
Hero 2 will be a while yet and that will be worth getting if HTC improve on this one and not stay still.
Get it, you won't be regretting it.
I would definitely buy it again.

I totally agree.
I came from winmo on a HD and now I won't touch winmo, although if M$ ever get their arse into gear and bring out winmo7 I will take look but it would have to have some killer features to lure me away from android.
Put simply Android is awesome, took me a few days to get out of my corrupt winmo mentality and get used to Android. The Hero is real nice , personally I could do with a bigger screen but if you don't need a bigger screen get that Hero bought now!

i'm not disappointed, i just think black and brown look a lot better. When i bought it i didn't have a choice, now there is. Also, i like the soft rubbery feel of the black one, teflon is nice but nothing really special. The soft black one is great.

iphone is good if you like apple choosing what apps you can and cannot have and at&t coverage is far from stelar...
not trying to start a war but those are a couple of the many reasons why i like my i wouldn't buy an iphone and bought the hero
Hi,
I agree with other posters, that if you wait, you'll always be waiting. The HTC Dragon looks like it may be interesting but by the time it's in your hand there'll be a 1.5Mhz phone out.
After years with UIQ and WinMo, the Hero is the best phone I've had. Sure the screen is smaller than on the HD but it's a proper, capacitive touch screen. Also no stylus.
Also the Hero feels more "connected". Even with the power and functionality of the HD, I never felt truly mobile with it. With the Hero I feel much more able to update my blog, my facebook, twitter etc. This may be due to the lack of a stylus but it also seems far quicker connected to t'internet.
Just my half shilling.

I buy my Hero, 2 weeks after it was released. I'm still new with android, ut i like'it i love'it. Usualy i get verry fast boored by a phone, i must say that i have'it for 3 months allready and it will last long for sure. In the place where i work i got wi fi, and i make a chalenge with my husband( He has a blackstone) wich one is faster. . I won!( Then our colegs start to cal us the htc family ) Besides allways u got something on the market for your phone, and think about, is an open source for development . So go for it!Just do it!
Go on buy it!!!
I would buy it again and again...
I was going to wait to see what is going to be coming out soon... but then I thought... why? If something new comes out - it's only a matter of time (usually 2-3 months) before something newer will be released.
You can't get better than the Hero right now. I've had HTC phones for a few years now and they have all been good.

I had a very good working HTC Kaiser with WM6.1. I used the ported Android which ran slow. But the experience I had with the ported Android, made me decide to buy the Hero.
You are Dutch, as I am, so why don't you have a look at Marktplaats? I bought mine there, too. Just ask them for their receipt they received when they bought it.
When you want more info, send me a private message.
as for a question: would I buy it again... YES.
as for a question: is it too early for android... YES
To be honest, I love it. WM is crap and we all know it. And for some people who don't want an I-phone, this is an alternative.
I have some weird principles... I haven't bought Nokia since 1994 - i know everybody had one, but I loved my Ericsson, i have never bought a BMW - I know it handles great and sometimes when I want to have some fun I borrow one from my friends, but generally i don't like it, I drive Audi, I will never buy a shirt that says D&G in your chest because it's just plain stupid, I prefer my clothes to be quality products but not to show off to everybody... and then again I have an I-pod because there is just no alternative...
And when it comes to phones I like to try something else than I-phone and Hero is the one to try... Gadget of the Year by "T3", Gadget of the Year by "Stuff"... I think we have a good phone in our hands.
And the fact that it is too early for Android... yes it is, but is it not wonderful to be a part of an evolution??? I think it is just amazing.

Windows Phone 7 for TG01

It all depends on what you want, its not really a question anyone can answer for you. If you feel that you need WP7 then you should upgrade as there isn't any real movement in that area on the TG01, I'm not saying it won't happen but its probably a while off yet. Android is looking promising at the moment though and with the restrictions in place in WP7 like lack of SD card swapping android may be the way forward, but that's only my opinion. I personally will be hanging on to my TG01 for a little while yet, it does what I need the way I like it. I'll try Android and WP7 if they become available but i'm happy enough with 6.5.5 till then.
I hope this is of some help to you

first of all wp7 eill be brought to hd2, then later it might get ported to our tishibas. i highly doubt so though, we have such a small communtiy, and there are lots of restrictions like multitouch. if we do get a working port, ir would be useless, alot of apps will not work on it.

If I was you, I would rather hang on to TG01 as irrespective of bad publicity it got initially (thanks to winmo 6.1) it's an excellent piece of hardware and gadget to be proud of! I have used HD2 and I have used TG01, and looking at it's sleek display, thin frame, light weight -and same power beast within - I don't think there is any winmo 7 or android phone ready to beat it!
It looks promising as pointed here, that we might see android on TG01 - which will be the best thing to happen to this beast. But if we don't I don't see any drawbacks with Sense roms, SPB Shell and even 6.5.5 titanium for now. WM7 porting on TG01 by the looks of it, very unlikely but not impossible. It's a difficult job to do and it won't happen overnight. If you can be patient for few months or even more, you might see android and/or WM7 on your TG01.
But irrespective of OS, I think, the hardware capacity of this beast is awesome!
Cheers guys for all your help, I think I shall be holding onto my tg01 for a little bit longer, the upgrade to WP7 can wait, I think i'd prefer to see it on the TG01 anyway, rather than any other phone
thanks again!
You could also try toshdroid on it. It does not work fully yet but so far it looks very good and runs very nice. Have a look in the toshdroid forum for more info.

TG01 Rocks Guys
I am so happy with my toshi; even if there is no android or any wm7...!! With the SPB Shell upgrades and the Droid skins and the WM7 skin...you hardly need the actual OS, with this device I can change the UI whenever I want and everytime it becomes as good as using a new device...!! What more you want...!!
No other phone / tab in this display range can match TG01. It surely rocks..!!

An excellent sentiment - and very well put
Sorry all, I am unhappy with my Toshiba TG01 phone.
True it is thin and it looks nice. But it is just not good enough for me.
The only reason why I am hanging on to it is the lack of WP7 phones available through Orange. I've been with them for a long while and Orange have been good for me.
My feelings with regards Android are out at the moment as I would much prefer to stick with windows mobile.
Come on Microsoft get your act together - bring WP7 as more of a competitor; bring SD Card swappable access in; and bring more WP7 phones available to all operators [especially via Orange ]

OK guys, this is just a shot in the dark, but I've just sent a message to the eBay buyer and invited him to join our forum. Not sure when he'll check his eBay messages or if he'll even bother to respond but it was worth a try.

Don't worry about WP7, we're working on it.

Nice try!
Of course you now that WP7 will never have a full functionality with the TG01 device. Because of the multi touch function witch miss in TG01!
I think Sense or Shell cover pretty well the User Interface and we will get no further functionality using WP7!
So my question is why everybody looks for WP7 or Android!

Thanks! I personally don't care about multi-touch on a screen this small. As a matter of fact I prefer using a stylus to not only keep the screen clean but also because it's more accurate with my big fingers, again for these small screens. I recently bought a used Viewsonic G-Tablet and the multi-touch is nice on its 10" screen.

I can tell you I'm very happy with fxdjacentyfxd's WM6.5 ROM. His support and tolerance for my newbie questions has been fantastic, to say the least! I really like WM 6.5 because I've previously been using a great XDA WM6.0 ROM on my HTC 8525 for almost three years.
So far I'm not very impressed with Android 2.3 on the G-Tablet, but I'm a total newbie to Android so need more tinkering time. The Vegan 7.0 custom ROM looks good and seems to be fairly fast, though.
I really haven't looked to see what WP7 is all about since it's not available for TG01. I can see where converting multi-touch to a single-touch resistive screen is probably a nightmare. Other than that, with its 1Ghz CPU I would think the TG01 should run it fine.
@aeroflyluby, I posted in this thread because I read through the WP7 forum again this morning and it appears nobody at XDA is working on WP7 for TG01. Of course, your subsequent post indicates otherwise. The TG01 is a great phone, other than the undersized battery (which I've solved with fxdjacentyfxd's help) and the infernal inaccurate battery meter. I don't know if WP7 or an Android port can fix that problem, but anything is worth a try.
Cheers, guys!

[Q] general opinion of eris

Hi all, my first post here. I'm looking to upgrade from my HTC Shadow (now that's what you call a legacy devide) and move on to bigger and better stuff. What's everyone's general opinion of the ERIS? Big can't miss, or is it a phone that I'll regret buying in a few months?
I've been watching on craigslist and have noticed some awesome deals for this phone (~75-100$) Is that reasonable, too high, or too good to be true?
I'm also thinking of joining page plus and getting away from the whole contract thing so if anyone's had big issues with the eris and that whole concept let me know.
Thanks for any help. I've been going through some of the posts here. good stuff overall.
The eris is awesome. Its even better rooted. It may not have all the options newer phones have now but for a smart phone its a great choice. The price you found is good too.
Sent from my GSBv1.7-ERIS using Tapatalk
thanks labnjab. I'm definitely interested in rooting the phone. Would this screw with the page plus thing? I wouldn't think so since basically page plus sounds like it's the verizon network, but I've never rooted anything.
Totally in love with mine. Stock, it kinda sucked, but rooted and it's a totally different phone. Freedom to make it what you want.
I was never into phones before the Eris. Had a Blackjack for a while; totally unimpressed, even back in its day.
Eris definitely ain't a power performer, but definitely bang for buck.
Not too many retired phone with this level of support.
If you can pick one up cheap with no contract, I'd recommend it.
The downsides would be, space as apps continue to grow, breaking the 10mb barrier and beyond. CPU, and lack of dedicated hardware graphics may be a problem soon as more apps are written to target the hardware of higher end phones.
I'll have mine another year unless I come across a cheap no contract deal. But the Eris with Android 2.3.2 does everything I need it to. No compelling reason to upgrade for me yet.
I love the small thin form factor. Couldn't imagine carrying around some of the bricks their pushing now.
Sent from my GSBv1.7-ERIS using XDA App
Personally, I think now is a bad time to be thinking of getting an Eris. The #1 reason I got this phone was that it was free for me through a website other than Verizon. Actually had a $50 rebate, too, although I had to wait five months before being allowed to redeem it, so I actually got paid to get this phone.
Of course, the developers and other users here have made this phone much more interesting than I would've imagined.
The price mentioned does seem reasonable for being without a contract, but being without a contract isn't that important to me. I can go through the same website as I did when I got the Eris and get a brand new Incredible for free, now.
I doubt if I will be upgrading to anything, however, until January 2012, hopefully right after the apocalypse so that I can get any Android for free.
if you have made it this long with your Shadow without being tempted by the newest, shiniest phones, you would probably be happy with an Eris. it is a great phone which has lasted way longer than the one year i planned to keep it for, thanks to all the great dev work here on XDA.
not sure how much longer we will be able to keep up with the increasing demands beyond Gingerbread, but if you are content with features currently offered by Froyo and GB, Eris would be a solid option. i would gladly buy this phone again.
The Droid Eris will not disappoint. I got mine for $100 on ebay around Christmas time, and have loved it ever since. Rooting rocks this phone's world. It shouldn't affect anything with your page plus contract.
But I've got my eye on the Incredible and Thunderbolt. Both of those phones are great contenders. Judging from your past phone history and waiting out on smartphones for this long though, the Eris will be a great start for you, I think!
The battery life for this phone is pretty good, I've gotten it to last the whole day on one charge. The call quality is decent, pictures/videos are okay. The features of this phone are really what blow it away.
A lot of these Android phones do a lot of the same things, it really comes down to, how fast do you want your phone to be, how many things do you want it to be able to do at once, things like that.
Thanks everyone. Got the phone today. It's in awesome shape. Turns right on FAST, nothing like the shadow which took about 2.5 days to boot. I like it. So, now that I've committed, what should be the first things I do to make this phone even better???
Never done any of this stuff so I need pointed in the right direction by those wiser than myself.
I don't know about wiser, but how about someone who just did this last week.
First go here and read the first 4 posts.
Google all terms you don't understand. Then Thank your lucky stars you don't need to do all that gain root.
Go to Market and download one-click root. Follow instructions. Once you have root donate as instructed. Browse forums here to decide which ROM to load.
I like my Eris, but it is a stop gap and always was. I should have swapped it for the Incredible when that first came out. But my other phone broke and was in a bind - 2 weeks before the Incredible was being rumored to launch.
The Eris does more then I EVER expected it to and it is a good phone. The memory is what kills me, and the speed. It feels snappy, but it is too slow some of the more intensive apps I want to run.
The size of the Eris and lack of a physical keyboard is what sold me on it, and what I still like. I will hate to have to go to a brick phone again, I got rid of those in the 90's.
Root and Custom ROMs restored life to my Eris, which was about to become one with a brick wall at 200 miles an hour on the stock firmware. The stock 2.1 Sense ROM is pretty slow and overall not the greatest Android experience, but if you root and flash something like GSB, you won't regret it.
Like everyone else said, Android is Android, it's all a matter of how fast you really wanna go. Any feature that newer phones have that the Eris doesn't is pretty much totally based on hardware limitations (i.e: HD video capture, 4G, etc.). The nice thing about it though is it's small, unless you're into the whole 32" TV in your pocket deal. Slides right in and out of your side pockets and doesn't cause carpal tunnel when typing.
Once you root, as listed in a previous post, find a rom you like and install. There are several listed in the developer section of the Eris forum (http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=554). Instructions on how to flash are included in most threads. Ask if you need further assistance!
i love my cute lil eris.
i wan running stock 2.1 for the longest time then finally took the plunge into 2.2 and now 2.3
HTC sense is why i bought this lil bugger, even though it can barely run it sometimes. in my opinion the stock rom on this isnt that bad for someones first android phone.
iv been very happy with my eris, but its almost upgrade time, sad to see this lil guy go. i usually sell my old phones to help pay for the new one but this time i might keep him around just for the memories <3
RA recovery is better then clockwork(my opinion) remember to flash that

Switching to Lumia 822. Want my experiences?

Finally got fed up with this dog-turd of a phone, and ordered a Nokia Lumia 822 as a replacement.
I have been with Android since flashing Donut onto my HTC Vogue, and while it was fun at first, I'm at a point now I just want my phone to work, with no need to constantly flash ROMs to get things to work well. I'm also tired of the constant lags/freezes that seem to still plague Android phones, so I've decided to take the plunge and move to a WP8 phone.
Anyway, the reason I'm writing this post is to see if anyone here has any interest in my documenting my experiences making the switch. If you want me to post here, let me know. If not, well, let me know that too. :silly:

@OP: I don't think I could ever go from an Android phone to a Win8 phone. It's just not the same. Plus, I'm pretty sure I'd lose a lot of apps... Though, I am looking for a cheap ICS/JB replacement for my X2, anyone have a suggestion there? Looking at the Droid Bionic, but even that is fairly expensive...
You picked a bad time to switch. Android up until ICS has been pretty crappy. I came from webOS and when I was using that, I thought Android was clunky and a little ugly. This is when Gingerbread was the newest version. I made the switch because webOS was going nowhere and there was no way in hell I was switching to an iPhone. Since the Droid X2 was my first Android phone, I came into android with a not so perfect experience thanks to Motorola and their locked down ways. I used ICS and JB when they were released on the DX2 but we all know they werent perfect. I was lucky enough to be given a Galaxy Nexus and since then, my thoughts on Android have gotten a lot better. You dont know what you are missing until you use a phone thats able to fully run the latest version of Android. Lag is pretty much gone. Everything works as it should. And Android is just getting better with every update. You say you have been using Android since the old Android days. Thats why I say you picked a bad time to switch because those were the crappy android days.
As far as Windows Phone, I have nothing against it. It looks great. My girlfriend is actually making the switch from Android to WP8 this month too. Shes not as much of a customizer as I am when it comes to phones so I think she will be happy with it. Also, it will give me a chance to check it out for myself. Not that I will ever switch. I'm sticking with Android and looking forward to their next unveiling in the next couple months.

I appreciate what you are saying here, and I agree that then new phones are better in this regard than before. However the only phones that even remotely come close to the speed of the WP8 phones are the flagship phones, which are at least $200 on contract or $650 off. No thanks.
And hey, maybe I'll like the new phone, maybe not. The only way to know is to try, so I'm going to give it a try. I'm certainly not trying to convince anyone to switch, just thought my experience may provide value to others.

For sure. I'm sure everyone here appreciates you sharing your experience. I'll be curious to know what you think of WP8 when you finally get it.
OP, to be honest, i felt the same way after dealing with the x2. after all we had gone through, i was just fed up. i wanted a phone that would just... work. My opinion has changed completely since i switched. after the x2, i got a rezound. it too was plagued with similar issues, and dealing with the lack of support and bad battery i nearly bought an iphone.since i got a RAZR M, my opinion has nearly 180'd. with the snapdragon s4, all my issues with android had literally melted away. with jellybeans smooth butteryness, the improved battery life, and overall impressive features, i will never leave android. even on stock, i rarely ever have horrendous battery or any stuttering whatsoever. had i been in your shoes, i definately would have held out for the SGS4, with the snapdragon 600, battery and smoothness with only go up. now, everyone has their opinions, but it seems your opinion was a little to vague and blunt in judging android as a whole. <-- thats my opinion, if anyone is interested.
My 822 got here last night, I haven't had a chance to do too much to it yet, but I'll give you my first impressions:
1. Build - Polycarbonate body is fine except for the back cover, which feels like it is going to break when you pull it off. One thing you have to give Motorola is that their phones are built like tanks, with aluminum bodies.
2. Screen - Screen is an AMOLED screen. Decided I'm not a fan. Has very nice contrast, but the oranges/browns/red look butt-awful. The 840x480 screen is a actually a benefit for me, at least, because it causes the fonts to be rendered larger than they would be on the X2, and are easier on my eyes. Plus less pixels to push means better speed from the phone.
3. Speed - Whoo boy, does this thing FLY!
That's all I will report on for now, I need some time to customize/configure the device before I come to any conclusions regarding the usability of the OS and/or app issues.
For anyone interested in differences in a few apps comparing Android, iOS and WP:

Ok, so Ive had the new phone for a little over a week now, which I beilieve takes me past the "honeymoon" period, and here are my thoughts:
The metro interface is really starting to grow on me. When I first saw the live tiles I thought "Uggh!! that's just nasty". But they look much nicer on the phone than they do on a picture on the internet. Probably due to the high contrast AMOLED display.
I still dislike the nasty oranges/browns on the device, but I've mostly stopped noticing it now.
The device feels smaller than the X2, even though it has ostensibly the same size screen as the X2. In fact, I would probably prefer a slightly larger size to get a larger screen area.
The device is slick, and has fallen out of my hand a couple of times. Almost fell into the crapper once! Definitely getting a case for this.
The screen resolution differences are a non-issue IMHO.
The camera quality is about the same as the X2, maybe a little better. MUCH faster to start, though, no longer missing the moment waiting for the camera to start.
Speaking of the camera, holy hell is Cinemagraph a cool feature. It takes a picture along with 5 seconds of video, allowing you to create a moving snapshot effect, similar to the NFL player intros on TV or the moving pictures from the Harry Potter movies.
There has been some extra work getting things setup, as I still want to retain my google accounts, but once done it is seemless enough.
In terms of speed and usability this phone blows away any Android device I've ever used, (including my Nexus 7). There is simply no comparison in this department.
Nokia Maps and Drive are not quite as nice as the Google maps and Navigator, but still very good. Not really missing anything here.
As far as apps that I miss, there really isn't much. iHeartradio is probably the big one, and they have a WP7 app so a WP8 on is expected to be coming shortly. Nokia Music fills in for iHeartRadio for now. There are a few other apps missing, but IE10 does such a nice job with mobile websites that it's just not a big deal.
I am fast becoming a fan of Nokia. Their custom apps are fantastic, and they have shown a real commitment to improving WP8 along. Whereas with Motorola phones you get an outdated, buggy OS, bloatware, and few updates, Nokia apps are superb and they are continually adding cool new features to their phones. Motorola still probably has the edge in build quality, especially with the aluminum bodies. I want my phones to last a few years, so build quality does matter to me.
There are a few things that I would like to see added, like separate volume controls, the ability to pin individual settings to the start menu, and a webkit browser, but these are relatively minor issues.
The apps are definitely fewer than what is available on Android. But the quality of the apps is significantly better as well. They are almost universally more polished and beautiful than their Android counterparts.
Overall I am loving this phone. Especially since I got it in new condition for under $200 bucks.
As I was reading Engadget yesterday I saw a couple of articles, one on the Broid Bionic finally getting upgraded to Jelly Bean, and the other one on how the HTC One bootloader is going to be locked for AT&T, I realized just how much crap one has to deal with on an Android phone. I will NOT miss any of this.
For those who contributed to the development on the X2, my sincerest thanks. You helped make a crap phone more bearable.
I may peruse the X2 forums from time to time for nostalgia's sake, but otherwise I think I won't be coming here much more. Best of luck to all of you, and hopefully DZK can get you a nice bug-free Jelly Bean build some day.

Thank you for the review. I chose the dx2 for the lack of a call termination beep. As in other Moto's at the time. And these beeps are always passed to a Bluetooth headset. My iphone 4s does the same damn thing.
What about the Nokia?
I just tried this, when the caller hangs up you get a triple beep. I don't know about over bluetooth, though.
I actually like this feature.
I use the Plantronics Voyager Pro HD and it is very loud because the dynamic range not compressed and this tone is much louder than the voices.
I also notice that the tone is much louder ( iphone ) when it is a Vzw phone terminating on the other end- strange.
