Best Custom ROM for (att) HTC Fuse for GPS & WiFi - Touch Pro, Fuze ROM Development

I want to set up my new (att) HTC Fuse to run satellite based GPS with internal maps and WiFi Internet connections. I do not want to pay for the att GPS or data plans. I want to use the internet through WiFi at home or at hotspots without using att by mistake and receiving data charges accordingly. In addition, what is the best GPS software: Tom Tom, Garmin or some other? It is fine with me to load all the maps on the SD card and run independent of Google Maps. A large 'Points of Interest' database is also desirable.

First of all, your questions have been answered numerous times and this is not the thread for these questions. In fact your subject does not match with the contents. However, below are my suggestions:
It's better to call ATT customer service to cancel your data plan so that you dont accidentally use the data plan. There are also cabs that
can be used to disable the data plan.
TomTom or Garmin . it's upto you. However, beware of the fact that there is very noticable lag in fuze-gps.
I myself do not use data plan and have been using FuzeGPS as far as I can.
Regarding the custom ROM - you can use any of the custom ROM as each has been catered to serve different taste.

I am in the exact same situation as you... the first thing I have to say to you is READ... Read & Do NOT post (and especially do not start a new thread for something like this)!
That being said, the NRG ROM Series by NRGZ28 (MAKE SURE YOU HARDSPL!) is what I personally use on my fuze, and Tom Tom 7 would be my recommended Nav software. That being said, with both of us being in the US, it might be a bit hard to get your hands on. Even more so with the proper maps. If you need help getting your hands on Tom Tom, let me know.... ALSO-- FIND, Download, & Install Modaco's NoData.... the stock ATT Rom WILL CONNECT to the internet even if you don't want it to. ATT's explanation is that "it is a primary data, secondary voice device." Don't end up like me with $50 in data charges at the end of the month just because of the stock ROM. You can also remove the password under connections and manually key it in when you are sending / recieving a MMS (the password is cingular).

What does the poll have to do with your questions?
For the data usage, I agree about downloading the NoData cab, it works great.
For the ROM, there's lots out there and all of them will work. Its best to look at what's included and figure out what has the stuff you'll use.
WiFi works fine in all of the ROMs.
GPS is where it could get a little tricky. Since you don't want to use data, then you'll have to disable aGPS (since March 1st, most ROMs have it enabled I think because of the AT&T fix). This will cause your cold fix time to take longer.
As far as GPS software, I like Garmin the best. Its just like a Nuvi unit and the maps are the most up-to-date for my area, especially compared to TomTom.

Thanks for your quick reply.
Obviously I am new to this forum (I registered last month), but I have spent MANY hours searching and reading many threads on this very interesting site. My questions have not yet been answered well enough to make a decision. I have read good things and bad things about almost every issue. Some guys say the stock ROM is horrible, some say it is great and every thing works wonderful after simply eliminating the att bloatware. Some say stay away from cooked ROMs and some say it is the only way to go. Obviously your research has answered these simple questions for you which others also may find helpful. If you can, please post some of the thread links that answer these questions in a more definitive fashion than my research has found. By the time I read four or five pages of most of the threads I found in my search there were so many contradictions and varied results that it became a little confusing, hence I was hoping for some simple answers that I hoped would be of interest to me and others with similar questions. I assumed there was more than Garmin and Tom Tom out there, but if not, I agree they are both probably good choices.
Thanks again for your comment – David.

Dude,
If you have an ATT Fuze, Why are you polling about the iphone, win-mo, and palm OS's? I'd Semi-understand the poll if you were undecided about which phone to go buy but you just picked up an ATT Fuze. The Fuze runs on WinMo and you're on a Forum that mostly works with phones that run Windows Mobile yet you're going to poll and ask about which smartphone OS is better?
If this poll has anything to do with a purchase of a phone, go to something like CNET.com or another electronic review site to find your answers.
I'm not trying to flame you but i'm struggling to understand how your poll and HOW that has anything to do with your question that you're posting?
Anyways, its a preference. I know it gets confusing to read all the pages about all the ROM's that are posted but i'm going to tell you, its all about what YOU want and it has nothing to do with anyone elses opinions. If i were you, i'd go flash every ROM and see which one works out for me. There are compromises but you really need to go through it yourself and see which one works out best for you. There is NO PERFECT ROM for this phone as the phone itself isn't perfect. As for your navigation needs, go find "iGo" for windows mobile. I'm not sure why people get business oriented phones if they don't want to spend money on a data package because the data capabilities and business oriented software is what makes these phones different than a regular cell phone. I still don't see a point in the poll but good luck.

I accidently hit the 'Poll' button and couldn't back out of it. I should have started over with a new post, but I made up the poll to fill the blanks instead. My vote is for WinMo. Thanks for asking - David.

ATT 8525 New Tweaker

Been cruzing around the site without posting for a couple of days reading wiki, posts..... BUT still confused about a couple of things
1. Do we have a latest & greatest Windows Mobile 6? There are sooooo many links and threads it is way to confusing. I just want to install it.
2. I have the ATT 8525 & cannot reprogram my buttons (PTT especially). I would like to reprogram a button to be a voice recorder. My old Siemens SX66 had a reocrder button & I used it quite often
3. Idea/Suggestion for those code writers out there: I have been using the built iin camera flash/led as a flashlight. Comes in real handy and is actually quite bright. Anyone know how or want to creat an app to turn the 8525 into a flashlight??
4. Why is there no pre installed back up/restore program to back up my device?? Can anyone recommend a good one?
Hold on let me put on my flame retardant suit, something tells me it's about to get hot in here.
Ok...All the things you mention have been done, the process is not complicated but it does take a bit of reading. What I would recommend is that you load schapps 3.60a rom you can get it here (this is a very good version of WM6)
http://rapidshare.com/files/50727307/Schaps_WM6Pro_WWE_3.60a-0823_Full.exe.html
It is a good stable and feature full Rom that will do all the things your are asking about.
Go to the wiki

Read up about the hermes, particularly

And don't take it personally when a bunch of people reply after me, with a bunch of sarcastic comments.
Good luck!

a couple of stupid questions and hopefully a few good ones...

hi all,
i'm new to the whole WM world....i just got my mogul before new years and i have to say i love it...i have been envisioning the days when computers would be carried in our pockets ever since i got a beeper in high school...now that day is here...
before i ask my questions, i want you guys to know that i am no dummy when it comes to computers...i am a software engineer and have completed and am currently working on multiple government contracts. if i had to declare specialization, i guess i would be considered a J2EE guy....but i'm very sound in theory and can/have adapted to numerous langs and platforms. hopefully, if i get a lull sometime soon, i can contribute to this community.
ok, here we go.
1. what is prl?
2. i remember reading somewhere that something(i want to say it was relocking after flashing a custom ROM) was either not possible or very hard to do with windows vista.....my only windows box is running vista....am i going to run into trouble down the line if i move to DCD's clean wm6.1 rom and want to , say, flash the official sprint release when it drops next month?
3. what is the pagepool? WM version of swapspace?
4. i've read a lot about kitchens and cooking roms, but i'm still missing something....i understand cooking a rom is essentially building an image...but i'm still a little hazy on what the OEMizer is...if i had to guess, it takes normal installs(CABs) and groups them for a post flash install in batch...like the "Sprint Customization" that executes after flashing an official sprint rom....correct?
5. for all you devs and hackers that are putting together custom roms, do you have an emulator/vm for our phones that you test you roms in before flashing?....am i just missing the fact that that is part of a "kitchen"?
i'm sure i'll have more questions in the future, but this is a good starting point...please only answer the questions you KNOW the answers to. no information is better then false information. thanks in advance.
yerp
no takers yet?....
1. A google search for PRL turned up this.
2. I'm running Vista and have no problems. You might need to uncheck the enhanced services bos in USB to PC to be able to sync but other then that I do everything from my Vista box.
3. Another Google search for pagepool turned up this.
4. No. It creates files that able to be used when making a kitchen. This way your programs are in ROM and dont need to be installed again when you hard reset. A search of this forum would have lead to several threads to read about this.
5. Nope. You flash your phone. If it doesn't work you try again.
Please do a little searching on the forums and a lot of reading before you start doing this. It will prevent newb questions and make your life a whole lot easier.
a couple days ago i was asking the same questions.
i have my phone working now, but i didnt bother with vista, i used my dads pc, which was running xp, worked first try without playing with any settings.
thanks for the answers blaze!
sorry for posting Qs that were seemingly so simple to find the answers too, but the disclaimer was in the title...i knew i could find them with some searching, and believe me, i've been reading about this stuff on my free time pretty much non-stop since i got this phone....unfortunately, free time is scarce right about now....
anyways, thanks again....your info/links have saved me tons of time and it is greatly appreciated!

NEWB needing help to upgrade

I have been less than pleased with my verizon Titan ever since I have had it. It runs very slow. At least twice a week, I have to remove the battery to unfreeze. The other day, I was in a patients room and noticed that her husband had a phone just like mine. I asked him if he liked it and he said that he loved it. I expressed some of my frustrations and he directed me to this website, telling me that he had installed a new radio and kitchen etc and that it now worked great. Looking at some of the websites, I have only become confused and a bit scared to try and tweak my phone. I do not know where to start.
Will somebody give me or direct me to simple idiot proof instructions on how to unlock/unleash the powers of this phone? I need instructions written for someone who knows nothing about altering smartphones.
Thanks in Advance
Not to be rude, but did you even read the stickies on the forum? Plz read the wiki's gather as much knowledge as you can about the subject and then take the plunge. You will find that the wiki's are most helpful. I would update to DCD's latest ROM and get the latest radio.
You will also find out that alot of basic apps don't come with his ROMs. Make sure you get a list of what you need on your phone before you take the plunge. Get a backup program like PIM backup.
Do searches. Research on your own. nobody here is going to do that for you. People created these wiki's for a reason. USE THEM.
In all truthfulness you should not hack your phone unless you know what you are doing. The wikis and threads are very daunting even to those who have some knowledge of what is going on.
Not trying to be rude, but maybe you need a different phone. One that works the way you want it to work right out of the box.
Best case scenario, even if you manage to fumble your way thru the wikis and then later flash your rom, are you going to be able to recover if you get stuck in the bootloader?
The wikis have the info that you need. But like learning medicine you have to apply yourself.

Yes, this is the official sprint 6.1 update with 3.42.02 radio. Non sprint customers can use it to flash the radio only (if you can't via sd card), but again CAN'T let customizations run. Non sprint customers will have to wait until the custom rom is released.

There are different methods to flash your rom, and different choices for rom updates. Read up on all of them. Trust me, you will need the info sooner or later.
Like it says in the DCD thread you need to unlock your phone, you need a rom, radio, and a carrier. I just flashed my sprint titan for the first time and just about cried when it got stuck in the bootloader.
oh looky what I just accidentally found in the forums.

What an amazing concept, you read the forum.
Unfortunately that many guides offer what I feel to be short-cuts. It may be fine if everything goes perfectly, but the problem with such simplifications is that new people can find themselves stuck in unfamiliar territory.
People should be take the time to be aware of background to what they are doing to their phones. Personally, I'd rather recommend taking care to understand the Wiki as myself and others have made the effort to cover many possibilities and recovers when flashing.
Hysterical that the poster identifies himself as a trauma surgeon. Lets hope that if any of us is ever unlucky enough to find ourselves on the other end of the scalpel from this joker, that he isn't standing at the table saying "how do you do this?", and might have taken the time to read up first.
There is no correlation between Surgeon and Computer literacy. My wife's cousin in finishing up Med school and is as bright as they come yet not computer savy beyond common tasks.
As for the actual question he needs not to worry. Using the link with Step by Step to the Verizon upgrade will go easy for you. I only suggest doing the radio via SD card and Rom via USB.

Its not the correlation, its the attitude.
Interesting attitudes here
I will start of first saying thank you to those of you who actually are trying to help. For the rest of you, yes I did search the forum and yes I did read the Wiki. I still did not feel like I understood things well enough to run the risk of "bricking" my phone. (That is new lingo for those of us who don't spend all of our time on computers) Of course I could spend 10 or 20 hours or more, learning more about the phone, which would mean that some time in October I might have it figured out. My job simply does not give me the time to spend hours and hours trying to tweak my phone. I am in the hospital 110 to 120 hours a week (not a month). I feel lucky when I get a few minutes with my wife and kids. But rest assured, when you crash you car and you are bleeding to death, I am there for you just as I am for everyone else. So for the rest of you who are too cocky and to much of a smartass to help someone else out, I ask what in the world are you doing in this forum anyway. I would predict that you are only in here to take what others are here to give OR just here to try and belittle or make others feel stupid.

Get off your high horse, exceptional ego, relax, and take the time to respectfully learn. Only a single comment here may have generalised and only slightly went over-board, but none were as bad as your absolute swipe against this community -- your second post to XDA.... ebb pegged it, as you do have a horrible attitude. You may have made a far better first impression by not posting your introduction to the forum as a request for a short-cut to flashing your phone without also stating that you had paid notice to the Wiki and current threads concerning flashing guides.... If you had trouble understanding, then why did you fail to state exactly where you went out-of-depth? If terminology is "new lingo" to you then did you at least cover the basics of basic in our Wiki's Titan for Beginners?
You come in here looking for help yet some of us were quite polite, accurate and specific in warning that you should not rush forward with short-cuts before being aware of what you are doing and how to recovery. Links to help were provided to you before in between your two posts. Your phone is possibly your critical property so you should avoid messing with it if unsure upon ensuring that you can maintain its function.
Warning for you in the future -- don't join a tech forum insult all as shut-in computer geeks who owe our life to you. This is an anonymous forum, and therefore all are potentially equal here. What distinguishes members is their decorum of respect and a display of an effort to learn.

Look, I in no way implied that everyone in here is a shut-in computer geek, although I have no doubt that some are. If you look back over the replies to my original post, there were a couple of members who showed anything but respect. In fact, two of them even posted twice to my original question without any useful information and replied only to in effect say "look how stupid this guy is." If you were on the other end of that reply, what would you think of those here in this forum? There were however several other responses, yours included, that were helpful. Yes I did read through the Wiki and I also had previously looked at two other websites given me by my patient's husband. It was mostly greek to me. That is why I posted.
I must say, I have been in several different forums, dirtbiking, cycling, climbing, trauma, as well as other computer forums and I have never met such attitudes that I met in here this week.
I'll probably just get an iphone next week.

sucks to be you...
and since there is only 168 hours in a week and you say 120 of it is for work... that leaves you with 48 hours of sleeping time... which would be a little less than 7 hours of sleep a day... how do you eat? how do you shower? how do you get laid? no wonder the attitude... if no one else understands... I do
It is tough for some to answer the same questions that are (I promise) explained in the wiki. The hope is that most people would understand and be able to follow through with the instructions, but this is not for anyone, similar to HAM radio and FTA satellite.
I encourage you to go for the iphone, it seems more your speed.
Alright traumasurg, I can understand being a noob sucks. So here is a breakdown of what you should do if you want to get your phone with a new rom and gps radio.
That stock rom wont work with GPS radio. You need a non-stock rom for it to work.
Get this rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=402920
Get this radio: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=403280
use this as a guide: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=TitanRecentHome
Once the rom is installed assuming you have verizon, run the carrier cab.
Get carrier cab here: http://www.lifesnotsogood.com/dcd1182/carriers/dcd Verizon Carrier 20080706.cab
Remember you will need to install the new boot loader first. Then do the rest according to instructions there.
Also, make sure you have another phone handy or a land-line handy for when u call verizon. To get it re-authenticated. You will need to do this whenever u go from a non-gps radio to a gps one. (I reccomend doing this during business hours so u dont freak and wont be able to contact them until they open in the morning)
Oh yeah make sure you backup your contacts to outlook(activesync) or use Pimbackup or your gonna be pissed off.

Hey all, new here i have some questions

Hey all! I'm so glad i found this community it looks awesome! I'm new here and to the HTC hero G2 AND to the droid OS for that matter so i will have some pretty noobish questions , i will try to make it easy and list them in order so if you could please respond that way it would make it a lot easier on this noob as well
I am in the USA so i don't know if that will make a difference but i see a lot of other countries names in updates.
1. My device is the G2 obviously and its unlocked and i use my local carrier Cincinnati Bell and i'm pretty sure my phone is stock everything as far as firmware and what not. I still have 1.5 and i'm seeing people talk about 2.1, some say a message will automatically appear for the update but will it work since i'm not on T Mobile? if not how do i go about getting this?
2. What other types of software are there you recommend every G2 should have or that i can update to my phone to make it better, faster and just all around great, how would i go about doing this?
3. i've noticed when i go to albums for some reason there are 5 different albums just for my pictures which were all already on my sd card, and on my old phone were all just under the same album. The same for videos too there is 3 different ones for those too. Why are they all being seperated and how do i just make one entire album for all photos and one for videos? i've plugged the USB into my computer and opened my sd card and have seen the folders for all my music and photos so could when i add particular artists music on just create my own folder and put each artists music in their own folder? would it show up like that on my music player as being seperate? and could i do the same for pictures?
I realize i have quite a decent amount of questions and i apologize but i am new to the G2 and Droid in general as i've stated and i love the experience so far and i want to gain as much knowledge as possible so big thanks to anyone who helps me!
THANKS!!!

What exactly did you think it was? This is a developer community.. not a help desk.
I myself am not a developer.. I have a very small and limited amount of knowledge regards android.
I come here because I pick things up.. and occasionally when I have a problem I ask a question BUT only in the hope that the great and the good of this community feel like they have time to answer it.
Sure I wish I could be more welcoming to you.. I really do hope your problem gets solved.
Just dont expect it to get handed to you.. for example.. most of your questions can be answered in the hero wiki.. which is one quick search away from discovery.
Your initial question was polite and well formed.. however to follow it up with that statement just shows that you were being very disingenuous.
Again.. I hope someone takes the time to answer your several questions.

I've searched for forums for the Hero G2 and this is one of the only ones with activity i found. So i signed up, yes i know this is a development forum but if someone has the knowledge to develop for such a phone then it became common sense to me they would know answers to the questions i had. I did not mean to seem "disingenuous", its from the fact of taking a post like my last to get a response is why i did so. I wish someone from the first few views could of either 1. Helped me or 2. Said what you said and suggested somewhere or something else to help.
I don't mean to sound like an ass, just would really like help so it would be GREATLY appreciated if someone tried at least :-/
Ok i'll use my first post as an attempt to be useful, if only because i've read a whole lot from here and as yet written nowt
Now, first things first, being in the states do you have the G2 gsm hero, the one with the chin, or the US cdma sprint version? Makes a big difference if you want to do rooting.
Information searching for the hero doesn't have to come from active forums, many were hugely active when the phone first arrived and may not be so now, but much of the content is just as useful/relevant as it was then.
Oh, and i'm neither a dev, or a programmer or a techy phone expert, pc expert or any other expert come to that, just a hero owner that started much like you. Knowing nothing
Regarding the official 2.1 update, have no idea how it might arrive at your device, or mine as i'm not interested. Mine is rooted 1.5 with modaco 3.2 and it works just fine (and stable/reliable) for me, and does pretty much all i need it to do. The only exception being maybe bluetooth transfer.
When i got my hero it was the latest all singing, all dancing device that shamed most if not all other smartphones, eventually rooting it made it better, and unless i get to upgrade it every 6 months to me that's the way it'll stay.
I might go for a custom 2.1 rom at some point, be warned the official upgrade removes that possibility for the future, and even if you don't think you'll want to now, you may well change your mind once you've had the phone a while
How are the files stored on your sd card now? Separate folders are displayed separately. Contacts, downloads, camera shots etc I guess you could put them all in one folder but the album has an "all pictures" option anyway so why bother.
All my albums are stored in folders, with artwork, and just drag and drop into the music or mp3, can't recall what it's called right now, folder and display as whole albums in the player. If i want to create a folder just for one artists tracks then again it will display that "album" separately.
Works fine for me as i'm a whole album person rather than using playlists.
Any combination is possible, trial and error and personal preference time, but you wont break anything by trying.
Finally, have google work for you, or you tube, there's a heap of good stuff around, and more applications than my failing keyboard can mention hence rooting and apps2sd has unlimited my app count. No more worrying whether i can fit in that latest market find or what i have to delete first.
new batteries time before i launch this keyboard.....
Thank you! for someone trying to help... i'll soak all that in kind person, and i have the one with the chin

[Q] T-Moble USA MMS w/o data

Hey guys i just got a atrix 4g unlocked for tmobile running cm7. I do not have a data plan but i do have unlimited messaging. is there any apn setting out there that allows me to send and recieve just mms and no data other than that. how would i go about configuring my phone to do so? i would really appreciate the help. its really annoying having to toggle the data on and off whenever i recieve a picture message.
bump
*Not trying to be rude*
Im in the same boat as you, we are both new here and i have 2 thanks overall so let one rookie tell another rookie rather than have a higher up having the fun of insulting and embarassing you.
Having a configuration would need first off root, which you said you had a custom rom so check, next something like this isnt a universal android thing so you will ger better results in the Atrix forums not android general.
And... Bumping is spam, you'll get banned and piss everyone off.
Also use search in the tools. It takes a little longer but its great.
Like i said just letting you know nicely,
yea i appreciate that...im new to this whole forum thing since most of the other mods ive done to my phone just based off of knowlege of the os and a few convos with friends...but yea thanks again
No problem.
I did a little research, and by little i mean little.
But idk how t-mobile does it, but when you get a smartphone you need a data package.
Like regular flips phones allowed unlimited txt, pics, and 15 sec videos.
But now you have a high end phone so check your bill closely.
They may be charging you (although not much because pics and just kbs in size) in the data section. Just based on my research but double check with T mobile.
