Wow! i was thinking of getting the Hero but now that i know i cant use 3g. i dont want it n more...
I have a question though! im getting rid of my g1 and getting an htc magic from ebay!
Spec For Magic:
rom: 512mb
Ram: 288MB
Specs For G1:
Ram: 192MB
i want to have the Hero port on it. i currently have it on my g1 but its still a bit laggy and i dont have any widgets... whats the point???
so if i get the magic which has the same specs as the HTC Hero will the rom run fast with no lag at all cosidering it has 90Mb+ more ram than the g1???

If you buy from T-mobile in UK, it should work in the US. I was told they use the same 1700/2100 bands that we do. Only Hero 100 has the 1700 band built in, so the regular Hero will not work for US 3G.

not quite.
All UK networks use the 2100 band. None of them use the 1700.
You'll have to wait and see if the american version out later in the year supports the ridiculous t-mob US bands.
UPDATE: HAve checked, and yes, the Hero100 IS the european version, cos thats what the one i have in my hand is. it has 900/2100 3G bands. NO 1700 at all.
The US version is the hero 130, which will have the 850 and 1900 that everyone GSM but T-mobile uses. again, no 1700.

What's sad is that I would rather use the Hero, relying on EDGE and Wi-Fi than to resort to using the iPhone... LOL

That's correct...... about UK networks. no 1700.
T-mobile is getting the Hero next year so will it go to AT&T or other operators first?
To the OP... the Magic that you are getting off ebay.... well that will be the same thing.... 3G won't work in the US unless you wait till Sept./Oct. when T-Mo US releases it.

I don't care much for 3G, it's a battery killer and I'm usually near wifi.
EDGE ftw!

As others have noted, Hero will only work on edge until the north american version with the 850/1900 3g bands are added.
Also, tmobile has recently said as of right now they have no future plans to release the hero.

That's something so stupid I cannot understand. Hero is awesome! It's like they want to sell less phones and have less customers. I would definitely buy one.. instead, I might have to get an unlocked UK one since I don't plan to change my carrier even if it comes to At&t US or Sprint.

So, since I was misinformed by T-Mo, I have a question of my own:
Will you be able to add the 1700 band with a software update, or does that require a hardware update through the mfg?

T-mobile AWS 3G using 1700 band will need hardware in the Hero to receive 1700 band. T-mo is making a big mistake here, they should go to hTc and get them to make a version of the HERO that would work with the T-mo 3G.

So then T-Mobile would have both the Hero and the nearly feature-identical Magic at the same time? As much as I would have wished T-Mo to carry the Hero (very), the FCC passed the Hero with the AT&T 3G bands anyway.

Where can I get/use Hero in U.S.?

I have had the g1 for some time now and its gettin pretty rough around the edges. I was wondering if it was possible to get a Hero in the U.S. and what service it would work under? thanks !
it would work under any GSM Carrier in the US! However 3G will not work on any carrier just edge...Have you tried ebay, ill sell you mine if you want! One week old.
you can buy it off expansys usa
http://www.expansys-usa.com/d.aspx?i=184575
however as you can see under the description it says "US 3G Data: No"
AT&T 3g
Looking into upgrading my at&t 8525 tytn which is due for an upgrade (close to getting an iphone 3gs 'til I found HERO). Any update or news on another release that would work in 3g?
I've spent hours searching ebay, amazon, expansys, etc. all of them only run HSDPA/UMTS 900 2100.
Is there an app to add 1900 for it to run on AT&T 3g or is that a ROM or hardware issue?
Thanks in advance.

You can't magically add 1900 to it, it's a hardware thing. The Euro versions have 2100, so the best you're going to get is EDGE on AT&T or T-Mo USA. You'd think that the UNLOCKED model would be at least 1900/2100 HSDPA or something!!!
The Sprint-bound CDMA version is..well...CDMA, so not compatible with AT&T as well.
man, that sucks. is att usa the only country using 1900? that's another sucky one

UK phone in US - 3G does not work.

I just purchased a SG SII here in the US and later found out it is a UK phone (the sales rep said it was a US model)
anyway, the phone works great EXCEPT it will not log onto T-Mobiles 3G network. All I get is EDGE which is terrible.
How can I get it to go to 3G?
Spoke with T-Mobile, even got a new sim card. No help
Spoke wth Samsung US - they tried, could not help and then said to contact the UK.
Called Samsung UK and they said it should work, if not, bring it back as it is broken!
anyway, is there some sort of settings that I can change to make it work in the US.
I also need it to work in Brazil as I will be going there and will be using the Brazilian Tim network and installing their sim card.
thank you for your assistance in advance.
The phone is suppose to be:
HSPA+ 21Mbps/ HSUPA 5.76Mbps
EDGE/ GPRS Class 12
Quad band GSM 850/900/1800/1900
Quad band UMTS 850/900/1900/2100
Did you limit the phone to only work with 2G in the settings?
Check Wireless Network settings.
Much more better would be goto Settings->About phone, tell us what Baseband, and Kernel, and ROM version you are using.
Reboot phone.

Exactly, that phone will never work on T-Mobile USA 3G network, refund it or switch to AT&T. Makes you wish someone would regulate mobile networks here.
Edit: SGS2 should work fine on TIM Brazil.
you guys are absolutely certain that this phone will not work on T-Mobile?
what about certainty that it will work on Tim? I live in Brazil and defintely need it to work there.
Here, in the US, when I return next year, I can alway switch over to AT+T.
I need to be certain because if I get to brazil and it does not work, I am screwed because then it is almost impossible to get anything done to it.
BTW- they have been saying that t-mobile will have this same phone in a few months. How will that one be able to work? will it be possible to flash that info to this phone when it comes out?
thanks

The US T-mobile Variant is completely different from the UK model, won't be the same. Also it's true you can never get 3G with T-Mobile, don't know anything about TIM though.
T-Mobile uses the 1700 AWS band which this phone does not use so yes... You will NEVER get 3g or HSPA+ with T-Mobile U.S.

so when you say fine, the phone, 3g to get to the internet, etc etc will all work?
as it is here, the phone works great and when with wi-fi, the internet is great but EDGE sucks ass.
So, as I already know that I am beating the dead horse. 3G here with T-Mobile is never going to happen but it will work with AT+T, in Brazil, the phone for calls will work fine, 3G will also work fine too.
does anyone know about claro, vivo or oi in brazil? just wondering....
and what about other carriers in the US, will it work with anyone beside AT+T?
thanks again. this has been very useful!
EDGE runs on GPRS. Your phone matches TIM's UMTS frequencies so it will have 3G data on that network.

Excuse the noobish question, but to make sure I have this right - You need both 1700 and 2100 bands for the 3g or 4g to work at all, correct? Was looking into buying it once its released but that may be a deal breaker if no speedy internet.

I'd like to know about that as well
I think everyone here just wants to know when the hell it'll be coming out to our own carriers. I need a new phone but I'm not waiting until Fall for one.
Doesn't t-mobile uses the 1700/2100 for 3G and 2100 for 4G? so it would be EDGE and 4G.
So your implying that 4g will in fact work? I thought you needed both bands for 4g to work.
I'm in the Philadelphia area and really need to know if this will work or not.
If I can get 4g, ill be preordering the phone asap. If not.... I'm still undecided.
nope, im asking if thats the case. i need to ask the dude that know, since he is the manager at the t-mo store if thats rite. but t-mo one should be coming out in month or two.
What T-Mobile calls 4G is really their 3G HPSA network. They have not yet rolled out LTE. So for you to get the T-Mo 3G, you need the phone to support 1700/2100 band, which I am not sure the international SIII model does, but I'm almost certain it does not. Therefore, you will only get 2G (EDGE) speed, which is around 10-15kilobytes per second download, good enough for web browsing and loading Google Maps, it's about 3 times faster than 56k modem.
The T-Mobile-locked model will support the HPSA+ 42Mbps speed and AT&T version will have LTE of course. Now whether if when this phone get released for T-Mobile and somehow it will preemptively support their future LTE service (launch in 2013), then that would be interesting (which inherently the hardware does support LTE due to the Qualcomm S4 chip to be used in American models). What I predict they will do is like with the Galaxy Vibrant -> Galaxy S 4G, so first release the HSPA+ only version, then release a slightly modified version that support LTE.

If this doesn't confirm lack of 1700, nothing does.
So basically, count on the international version not being usable (besides EDGE) on T-mobile. You'll have to wait for them to up with their own version.

I hope it goes as you said in our region. I've seen an AT&T version of HOX+ which will support more Network frequencies as well as LTE. Would it really matter in my case? Should I go with the unlocked AT&T version or an international version?

That's stupid, how do I know my coverage frequency? I'm in Seattle area, sometimes I travel to LA.

LA has spotty 1900Mhz coverage on TMo. It's far, far better here with 1700Mhz. That's the exact reason why I bought the TMo version instead. If I need to unlock it, I'll either pay $20 on eBay for a code, or just pay for my device and get one from TMo instead. There isn't any branding on the phone at all, and you'd miss WiFi calling with the HTC store version.

Bro, if you got always "4G" on your last phone its not going to work on dev edition simply put. no 3g for you sir! if you got "LTE" or "H" on it then dev phone will work for you. if you always got just 4G.. welcome to Edge world on your dev phone.
I just put it to you in simple terms. Off you go Decide either the dev or t-mobile phone. Honestly, its looking like you gotta send that bad boy back and get a t-mobile one
Im in the same boat. I get E on HTC unlocked One, when I had 4G on my Tmobile One S unlocked. So, if I return the phone and get a T-Mobile version I should get 4G like I did with my old One S??

Yes.
That is crazy. I dont think that 1700 warning was there two weeks ago when I pre-ordered. Either way, where do I get a T-Mobile unlocked from now? Do I have to buy a regular T-Mobile outright then enter a unlock code? Thanks again.

It was there all along and everyone who did the research knew it won't get T-Mobile aws band. Your best bet is buying direct from T-Mobile and unlocking.

T-Mobile's branded phones always say "4G" when on HSPA+. International phones usually idle with "3G" and then change to "H" or "H+" while data is active. Neither of these things is an indication of what frequency your data is being transferred over.
That airportal site linked above seems pretty good; there are other crowdsourced options for finding the PCS refarmed areas, too. A good way to be safe if you're dead set on the developer edition is to wait for LTE to roll out in your area since that will definitely work.

You don't need an unlock code if you plan to use it on T-Mobile US (including prepaid MVNOs), only if you plan to use it on AT&T or internationally.
Dude call tmobile and you will be able to order via the phone
