How do I sync contacts only from My Contacts in GMail and not All Contacts?

What's the reason to want to do that?
If its space, really not a problem in my experience.
If its just because they get in the way, there are settings to show ALL or FAVE or JUST THOSE WITH PHONE NUMBERS etc
Remember that they are stored on the web anyway, so really simple to swap the views. I have all my contracts synced including a huge number of email contacts, but I don't see them all when I go to contacts as I've got it set to show just Phone contacts.
When I write a mail, as I type an address it shows in the :to section searching and refining as I type - I don't even notice.
If I'm searching all, I can also bring up keyboard and press a letter to get contacts with that letter in the same way, or fast scrolll at the edge by going to midd, top or bottom to show that part of the alphabet.
That said, I think you can only sync all contacts, but could be wrong.

In the People app, I only want to see My Contacts, not all contacts. Hmm, not sure thats possible. It doesn't actually show which group things are in at all it seems.
Magic and hero differ lots here as the Magic doesnt have the People app. so dunno on this one. xxx

Just found the answer! In the people app in the Groups tab, press menu and then tap sync groups and you can select which groups to sync there!

Something I found on mine was that it only showed the groups I had added and People couldn't seem to detect all my other existing groups.

It is possibble for individual contacts, but not for the groups, afaik!

Hi,
I know there is a setting which either adds or ignores random emails you reply to as contacts. Idisabled it to stop every random mail being added to my contacts but cannot remember how I disabled it ????
This is driving 2 Hero users here crazy....please somebody remind me where this setting is!

in people, go to the groups tab
press menu
select sync groups
tick only 'my contacts'
Arghhh...that's the one. I was confused by mixing it with the 'Phone' setting as 'Save to contacts' option!

Hmmm...created some new groups in gmail and assigned existing contacts (via PC browser)
Only one of the groups being picked up on synch though ?
Manually synched few times...no difference
Edit: It picked up the Group I created. Not the existing ones 'Collleagues', 'Family' etc... Is that expected behaviour?
i don't actually use the groups, so i have no idea!!

I've seen this posted a few times, but I can't seem to find the "my contacts" option. In People - Grounds - Menu theres only and "Add group" button.
Anyone know what I'm doing wrong/why it doesn't work?
I'm actually having the same problem - can't choose only to sync "My Contacts". I'd be really grateful if someone could help us out.

Glad I found this awesome community that helped me and my phone's relationship grow.
I'm asking this question because I don't want to have to take pics of all my friends, I can't even fill the "People" tab, with my fav. people up with pics cuz it just takes too much effort haha. Connecting to facebook and getting their pic on caller ID would be waay easier!

If your using sense as your interface then yes you can. You'll have to link the contact to their fb profile in the "Updates and Events" tab of the contact. Once done it will automatically use the profile pic as the contacts default pic.
As moontashir said, the Facebook link will do this for you, although the links are made based on names, I would presume. If your contact list and your Facebook friends list names don't quite match up, they won't get linked. In my case, about 75-80% of my contacts with Facebook accounts get linked properly. Not too bad.
I'm not sure why but that's not the case for me. I linked the facebook account and the contact successfully, and in the updates and events page I can even see his photos and albums, but there is no button to save the picture nor does it link the picture automatically!
Nevermind, I got it! I had to go to "Edit Contact", click on the picture, and select Facebook Profile. Thanks... Love this forum!

yup is ture, even I can see the picture ...but I still can't save into phone ... maybe got others way???
do we have to do this linking individually for each contact? can we not do it for the entire contact list?

Wehenever I click facebook when I choose a pic I just get sent to the FB login screen, and nothing happens.

Yes, I've used that one. Its ok, but for some reason it only starts up once. So whenever I want to use it I need to unninstall and then re-install.
But I cant seem to figure out why the phone wont sync by it self... Should work without problems even with the SPB Shell..
Alright so I've basically fallen in love with the most recent version of KaosFroyo, minus this one aspect, and that is that almost none of the profile pictures for my synced Facebook contacts will appear on the phone. Like, 5 randomly are appearing, but none more. How can I get the other peoples pictures come up?

This has been an issue for everybody on all roms lately. You can dl the app "syncmypix" free from the market. Works great!

I was having the same issue. I was able to manually sync them last night without any extra app. While in Contacts hit the menu button then display options. Make sure that your contact list is also displaying all contacts for Facebook. Go back to your contact list and long press which contact you want to link with Facebook. Click edit contact. Then click menu and Join. Now select the Facebook contact for the corresponding person.
I have also found that going from the stock ROM to Kaos, is that if the contact name does not match up to the facebook contact exactly, it wont sync. I have not found a way to manually snyc then up like in the older stock versions.

Thats the method i kind of stumbled upon as well.. The whole contact thing was really aggravating me. haha
Yea weird bug. I haven't had an issue, but my wife's phone did.

The new official Facebook app has contact sync also. So if you wanted to, you could remove your "Facebook for HTC Sense" account, reboot, let it remove all the data, and then open the settings in the Facebook app and change it to sync all contacts. I don't know if it works any better, but it's worth a shot.

Freaking lovely! Just what I needed. Thanks! That'd been driving me batty for a week.
So I've had this phone less than 24 hours and I want to get rid of it.
I have all my contacts in gmail and organized. Work, Businesses, Personal, etc.
The only way I can see my all gmail contacts is if I go under "All contacts". (But thats cluttered with every auto added email address for the past years)..
And select show only contacts with phone numbers. All I get is my own contact. WTF!
Now that I'm searching for it, tons of people are having this issue with no real solution..

If this is your only issue with the Atrix, I am sure there will be a solution somewhere for it, and you will find that it is an amazing piece of hardware, and you will reap the benefits.
Where have you looked for solutions so far?
I've tried just about every contact manager on the market with no luck..
I'd settle for seeing all my contacts with out grouping for now but can't even figure that out.
Theres a few other unrelated things bugging me.. I hate the sms iphone like bubbles, can't see how to disable them asides from a 3rd party app.
usb charging doesn't seem to work.
And I already had top do a battery pull to get the phone to wake once.
I miss CM lol

Below is a link to the contacts manager I use. 'Go Launcher EX Contacts' it works great for me, you can create as many categories as you want and name them whatever you what. Give it a try see what you think.

Yea, I would also suggest trying out the GO Contacts app.
The only thing I don't like so far is that the GO wallpaper team steals code from freeware developers and tries to make money off of it :\
log into Gmail. go to your contacts. Delete all the entries under "other contacts" as that is where it stores all the email addresses you've sent email to over the past years, that aren't an actual contact that you've entered yourself.
Now go to Gmail settings. General Tab. In the option "Create contacts for auto-complete:", select the "I'll add contacts myself" radio button. That should solve your problem. or atleast some of them

Open your contacts app. Not the dialer + contacts tab. The actual contacts app. Press the options soft key button, select display group, and then All contacts.

Wow, I can handle this. It's not quite what I'd like, but it'll do for now. It displays my groups perfectly!

I actually tried that this morning, didn't change anything when displaying only contacts with phone number.. I'm still the only contact it shows.
But alas I figured out what this stupid thing was doing!
It only shows google contacts that are in the "My Contacts" group. All of my contacts only belong to one group (Work, Personal, Etc). Putting them all in my contacts fixes the default contacts app.
But I think I'm going to stick with GoContacts for now..

I have an issue, I am trying to add phone numbers to existing facebook friends in my contact list and it won't let me. It is saying that since it is just a facebook contact it cannot be edited...PLease help, I have many contacts in my phone twice, one is the facebook contact and the other is the phone number. i attempted to do the same thing, and here is a very, very annoying workaround i had to do.
go through and rename all of your contacts to match their first and last names on Facebook; after that, remove your facebook account and add it back in. if it won't allow you to re-apply your facebook account, you're going to have to change your password. i don't know why, that's just what worked for me after searching for a solution for about 3 hours.
it might not update your contacts immediately, i have to do this process everytime i add a new contact to facebook/my phone and i want them synced. the longest it's taken my phone to sync back up with Facebook is about 15 minutes.
remember, their names have to be exact for this to work.
Try separating the contacts, adding your changes to the non-facebook entry and then rejoin them.

You've hit menu, edited the contact and then hit menu again? That's where the 'Join' option is. Once they're joined, I hit 'done' and all set.
I've noticed that I need to delete their icon on the original contact if I want the their FB profile photo to take effect.
Not sure if I understood what you need... but I think Contact Analyzer 2 could work for you. I had a lot of duplicated contacts. That program helps you to merge contacts, delete duplicates, etc.
I believe pre-GB the the buttons were just there when you edit the contact, on GB there is that additional menu button to get to them.
here is how i merged mine. example
joe smith 111-111-111 joe smith facebook contact
you should have 2 entries in your contacts. one with a number and one facebook contact.like you said you can not edit the facebook contact. so while on the facebook contact hit menu - edit contact. that should bring you to the screen where it tells you it is not editable. the boxes done and revert should be at the bottom. hit menu again, in the lower right hand corner should be a join option. hit join and it will bring you to a join contacts screen. now just select the contact that has the phone number.
I don't know how to thank you guys' enough - I thought I would have to resort to a third party app or removing/re-adding Facebook... God, I don't know why they made it so much more convoluted in GB to do something that was easy enough in Froyo.
