I have an issue, I am trying to add phone numbers to existing facebook friends in my contact list and it won't let me. It is saying that since it is just a facebook contact it cannot be edited...PLease help, I have many contacts in my phone twice, one is the facebook contact and the other is the phone number. i attempted to do the same thing, and here is a very, very annoying workaround i had to do.
go through and rename all of your contacts to match their first and last names on Facebook; after that, remove your facebook account and add it back in. if it won't allow you to re-apply your facebook account, you're going to have to change your password. i don't know why, that's just what worked for me after searching for a solution for about 3 hours.
it might not update your contacts immediately, i have to do this process everytime i add a new contact to facebook/my phone and i want them synced. the longest it's taken my phone to sync back up with Facebook is about 15 minutes.
remember, their names have to be exact for this to work.
Try separating the contacts, adding your changes to the non-facebook entry and then rejoin them.

That's the problem, I have tried that and there is no option to "merge" them together.

You've hit menu, edited the contact and then hit menu again? That's where the 'Join' option is. Once they're joined, I hit 'done' and all set.
I've noticed that I need to delete their icon on the original contact if I want the their FB profile photo to take effect.
Not sure if I understood what you need... but I think Contact Analyzer 2 could work for you. I had a lot of duplicated contacts. That program helps you to merge contacts, delete duplicates, etc.
I believe pre-GB the the buttons were just there when you edit the contact, on GB there is that additional menu button to get to them.
here is how i merged mine. example
joe smith 111-111-111 joe smith facebook contact
you should have 2 entries in your contacts. one with a number and one facebook contact.like you said you can not edit the facebook contact. so while on the facebook contact hit menu - edit contact. that should bring you to the screen where it tells you it is not editable. the boxes done and revert should be at the bottom. hit menu again, in the lower right hand corner should be a join option. hit join and it will bring you to a join contacts screen. now just select the contact that has the phone number.
I don't know how to thank you guys' enough - I thought I would have to resort to a third party app or removing/re-adding Facebook... God, I don't know why they made it so much more convoluted in GB to do something that was easy enough in Froyo.

What's the reason to want to do that?
If its space, really not a problem in my experience.
If its just because they get in the way, there are settings to show ALL or FAVE or JUST THOSE WITH PHONE NUMBERS etc
Remember that they are stored on the web anyway, so really simple to swap the views. I have all my contracts synced including a huge number of email contacts, but I don't see them all when I go to contacts as I've got it set to show just Phone contacts.
When I write a mail, as I type an address it shows in the :to section searching and refining as I type - I don't even notice.
If I'm searching all, I can also bring up keyboard and press a letter to get contacts with that letter in the same way, or fast scrolll at the edge by going to midd, top or bottom to show that part of the alphabet.
That said, I think you can only sync all contacts, but could be wrong.

In the People app, I only want to see My Contacts, not all contacts. Hmm, not sure thats possible. It doesn't actually show which group things are in at all it seems.
Magic and hero differ lots here as the Magic doesnt have the People app. so dunno on this one. xxx

Just found the answer! In the people app in the Groups tab, press menu and then tap sync groups and you can select which groups to sync there!

Something I found on mine was that it only showed the groups I had added and People couldn't seem to detect all my other existing groups.

It is possibble for individual contacts, but not for the groups, afaik!
Alright so I've basically fallen in love with the most recent version of KaosFroyo, minus this one aspect, and that is that almost none of the profile pictures for my synced Facebook contacts will appear on the phone. Like, 5 randomly are appearing, but none more. How can I get the other peoples pictures come up?

This has been an issue for everybody on all roms lately. You can dl the app "syncmypix" free from the market. Works great!

I was having the same issue. I was able to manually sync them last night without any extra app. While in Contacts hit the menu button then display options. Make sure that your contact list is also displaying all contacts for Facebook. Go back to your contact list and long press which contact you want to link with Facebook. Click edit contact. Then click menu and Join. Now select the Facebook contact for the corresponding person.
I have also found that going from the stock ROM to Kaos, is that if the contact name does not match up to the facebook contact exactly, it wont sync. I have not found a way to manually snyc then up like in the older stock versions.

Thats the method i kind of stumbled upon as well.. The whole contact thing was really aggravating me. haha

The new official Facebook app has contact sync also. So if you wanted to, you could remove your "Facebook for HTC Sense" account, reboot, let it remove all the data, and then open the settings in the Facebook app and change it to sync all contacts. I don't know if it works any better, but it's worth a shot.

I have Upgraded to Generic 2.1 and i am very impressed by 99% of the update.
I am trying to link some contacts to facebook, most of this is trial. However, contacts that are not saved under the same name as in facebook, are trickier?
It used to be a case of just clicking link contact, and choosing a facebook profile, but i can not find this option.
Can anyone help please?

Im too having problems with this,
i dont really want my phonebook to be full of firstnames and surnames just so i can see facebook updates,
Press menu once inside the edit window of the contact u want to pair and press join and just choose the profile that fits better then choose the pic to show or just change it by clicking over it.... For me its workin great i dont c the big deal... Good luck

well, i've tried this metod and the problem basically remains.
- you long click on your friend name in the contact list and choose "join..." (friend listed here as for example "kleenex")
- you pick your friends facebook profile (he entered on facebook "Kris Leenox")
- the profiles are joined BUT are displayed in contact list as "Kris Leenox".
the name is there, the surname is there, the nickname is set, BUT you see Facebook's name on the list. And editing this joined contact gives under "facebook" - "you cannot edit facebook on this device" or something like that.
so, basically, it sucks.
I AM choosing my names on contact list, F..k Facebook, i wont surrender my freedom just like that

So which is the correct one?
If we link to the correct facebook profile, when we click on their picture from the phonebook, should it appear the Facebook icon from the options?

Here I was, thinking that the "social phonebook" would work wonders.
Sort of, yes, but the naming thing is a real pain in the neck. Pleeeeeze, if only I could control which name is shown in the phonebook. So, actually, this doesn't merge contacts, rather it just mixes them into big contact cards, with possibly duplicate numbers. The worst is, apparently the new details, from facebook or twitter aren't synced back to the contact details e.g. in your gmail contacts.
Still stranger, the contacts on the phone don't even exist? I mean, the gmail contact cards reside "somewhere" and are not the same as those saved on the phone. That's not syncing, either.
What to do?
In the interim, I'd be happy with a 3rd party app that merges & syncs back & forth, but.... which one delivers? (The ones I've seen so far just mess up your contact cards, sometimes very badly).
Just to add to the confusion... I seem to have two Facebook phonebooks on my X10:
For some contacts, when I enter edit mode, there is first the section from my gmail account, then there's the section from Facebook Timescape, then there's the section from Facebook [my email]!
Anyone know why that is? Is facebook in timescape treated as a different profile from the built-in facebook app?
The two facebooks situation comes from a) timescape and b) the facebook app, which asks initially if you want to sync your fb contacts to the phone. These are shown as facebook ([email protected]) in the phonebook.
Defaulting to the fb name is super annoying. What's even more odd is that for some friends, it does default, for others, your gmail contact name is "the stronger one". What gives?
Does anyone has a solution for the problem with the names (forced Facebook names)? Or is it a bug, too?
Like most of the users here, I love the 2.1 update, and HATE the names-problem. Really really HATE IT.
So far, all I've been able to deduct is that the shown name is decided alphabetically. The name that's further down in the alphabet will be shown. So, if your contact name is aJhon, the facebook name is bJhon, twitter is zJhon, the shown name would be zJhon.
Hope someone finds a solution or SE releases a patch or something.
So I've had this phone less than 24 hours and I want to get rid of it.
I have all my contacts in gmail and organized. Work, Businesses, Personal, etc.
The only way I can see my all gmail contacts is if I go under "All contacts". (But thats cluttered with every auto added email address for the past years)..
And select show only contacts with phone numbers. All I get is my own contact. WTF!
Now that I'm searching for it, tons of people are having this issue with no real solution..

If this is your only issue with the Atrix, I am sure there will be a solution somewhere for it, and you will find that it is an amazing piece of hardware, and you will reap the benefits.
Where have you looked for solutions so far?
I've tried just about every contact manager on the market with no luck..
I'd settle for seeing all my contacts with out grouping for now but can't even figure that out.
Theres a few other unrelated things bugging me.. I hate the sms iphone like bubbles, can't see how to disable them asides from a 3rd party app.
usb charging doesn't seem to work.
And I already had top do a battery pull to get the phone to wake once.
I miss CM lol

Below is a link to the contacts manager I use. 'Go Launcher EX Contacts' it works great for me, you can create as many categories as you want and name them whatever you what. Give it a try see what you think.

Yea, I would also suggest trying out the GO Contacts app.
The only thing I don't like so far is that the GO wallpaper team steals code from freeware developers and tries to make money off of it :\
log into Gmail. go to your contacts. Delete all the entries under "other contacts" as that is where it stores all the email addresses you've sent email to over the past years, that aren't an actual contact that you've entered yourself.
Now go to Gmail settings. General Tab. In the option "Create contacts for auto-complete:", select the "I'll add contacts myself" radio button. That should solve your problem. or atleast some of them

I actually tried that this morning, didn't change anything when displaying only contacts with phone number.. I'm still the only contact it shows.
But alas I figured out what this stupid thing was doing!
It only shows google contacts that are in the "My Contacts" group. All of my contacts only belong to one group (Work, Personal, Etc). Putting them all in my contacts fixes the default contacts app.
But I think I'm going to stick with GoContacts for now..

Are you know something usefull .apk or .exe to clean up this mess?

You can merge contact in the phone. In phonebook long hold on the name and you will see a menu where is the merge option.
The problem is you cannot select the final name (the showed name), which drives me crazy
Anybody know how to select the showed name for merged contacts please?

That drove me nuts before, too. But then I went and arranged my Contact list in gmail, merged all of the double and triple contacts and typed in the name I wanted to be displayed. Sync and voila

I dont have double contacts in google contact list. Already merged via gmail. The trouble is to merge facebook and google contacts The phone sometimes selects the facebook name and sometimes the google name. I always want to display the google name. How to do that?
Sorry, I should've quoted the OP for the duplicate contacts.
Anyway, just rename your contacts in Gmail to what you want them to be and sync them. So, this way after you join them with their FB accs, their name is still what it says in Gmail.
