Info Resources for New To Android Peeps - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

New to Android? Here's some really useful stuff to be reading...
Its Android general stuff as opposed to Hero Specific stuff, which I'm sure will be plentiful on this section anyway.
(But here's a link to the Hero Manual and HTC Sync, just for ****s and giggles http://www.htc.com/hero/m/en/index.html )
First an android wiki
http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page#Magic.2FSapphire
has stuff specific to Dream (G1) and sapphire (Magic) handsets, but a lot of the code stuff might be worth experimenting with to see what is the same, since both those handsets run Android Cupcake or 1.5OS
This thread is on the Magic forum but is a good place for links on allsorts of mods on the Magic which I suspect will be similarly acheived on the Hero.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=529062
A general android FAQ here
http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Android_FAQ
Has a good section on hacking and development.
These sites have info on Android Apps and some.apk downloads if you don't have access to the Android Market.

There you go peeps - Mods can this be a sticky? Cos I'm in the middle of my next adult novel and I can't keep babysitting these guys.... (kidding)

Well spotted. Link removed from 1st post.
Thanks

If you read the title, this says Info resources for those new to ANDROID and the thread on the sapphire forum has lots and lots of very useful links for anyone using the Android 1.5 OS - which of course includes Hero.
It also quite clearly SAYS its studff for the magic that might be a good starting point for the Hero.
Apols for the Droidappz link tho - my bad...

the link to ipmart-forum is allowed ???

I've removed it - I put them on because a lot of apps are free anyway and the folks who have no market access can get .apk from there.
Guess if folks need em they can always google...

Very useful Dayzee. Have had a quick parse, will be looking deeper tomorrow, quite possibly before I go to the pub. You have your vices, I have mine ;-)
Thank you very much for the pointers

The Hero WIKI is looking very healthy now, so that's a great place to start too. Links to lots of ROMS all in one place, as well as Radios and flashing guides - One Stop Shop for Hero Info!!

I wonder if it wouldn't make sense to create a GSM and CDMA sub-forum for the Hero, since there are some marked differences between the models, not limited to the baseband and specialized apps for each network? Just a thought.

noob question
hi dayzee first of all thanx a lot for so much useful information, i've read through the different threads and found that one need to put some zip file in sd card and then restore from there, but i have found and downloaded a rom from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559622 and it seems like official RUU file so i was just wondering what should i do with it, just run this EXE and follow the steps or i need to do some tricks?

Recommended ROM For Sprint's Touch Pro (CDMA)?

Hi All,
before you jump on the bandwagon asking me to read the wiki or searhc, i already did that. However, all the results I got are specific to "Raphael" and not necessarily the Sprint CDMA version.
The stock ROM that comes with the Sprint Touch Pro really really really sucks. I even truend off / killed TouchFlo 3d and still have all kinds of problems.
I'd like a leaner quicker / more efficient rom, so the question is twfold
1.) How exactly do I go about unlocking the SPL to allow 3rd party ROMs?
2.) Which ROM would be recommended?
Thanx beforehand!
You might do better if you posted this in the forum specifically for CDMA version of the Raphael.
Its literally the sub forum above this one.
shassouneh,
I think CDMA TP have a different way of doing it...
Notice that all the ROM's in this particular forum are for GSM phones...
crazyC is right... post this thread in de CDMA one...
Mods: you should move this thread...
Thanx
THanx for the replies guys. Much appreciated. I actually considered posting it there but figured this is a ROM-related question so should be posted here. Since I am asking for a recommendation on which CDMA-compatible ROM / flashing method to use, I think it makes sense to keep it here just as much as it does to move it to the CDMA section.
Thoughts?
I could still use advise on my original ask.
I still think you are in the wrong forum.
A quick glance through the CDMA forum suggests that:
1. HARDspl is different for your phone to the GSM one, and that there are device specific variants, where as GSM phones just have the one. PPCGeeks maybe the best place for CDMA phones.
2. using a GSM rom will break your phone, and so you should be looking at the ROMS posted in the CDMA forum here or at PPCGeeks, both for the roms and for advice about them.
3. Posting here you risk getting advice from people who do not understand the differences bewteen the cdma and GSM phones (I am not clear about it - why would I be - we don't have CDMA phones over here).
4. Most people reading this particular forum will have GSM phones and have little knowledge to answer your question with. For a higher chance of getting your thread read by people who might have a good answer, I still think the other forum would be better.
But hey, this is a free world and this is just my advice.
Also, questions about which is the best rom are not usually treated very politely around here - once you have hardspl'd your phone, it is a case of read the thread with the ROMS in, pick one that gets good feedback and then try it. And another till you can settle on one. Everyone has different tastes and requirements. Of course, the next step is to start cooking - it gets very addictive. Then you get grief from your girlfriend/wife, then the arguments start about so much time on the computer......

Yeah, I know it can be a bit confusing, we don't have a ROM thread directly under the CDMA tab. Most GSM folks live here at XDA; I know I know it's not all GSM, but ROM development is really heavy for GSM users.

Totally agree, it's garbage. After flashing even KK's loaded ROM which has 100's more applications, TF3D is even more snappy than the stock Sprint.

Mighty Mike's Lean version is very nice, but it's really personal choice. There are too many to really Tell someone what to use. Install that one, play with it for a week, then install KK's, then play with that for a week, then install xWeapons, etc.
Now go to the CDMA world of ROM's:

No problem,
and yes, as other's have posted DO NOT instlal any of the GSM stuff, you will screw up your phone something fierce.
You can also update your Radio to 1.11.00F and get better batery life, it got rid of the overheat issue for me when WIFIing, and just better recieption, IMHO.
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=46616
Two ways to update:
You can update via the EXE's that come pre-packaged with damn near all the ROM's
or
You can rename the nbh file to RAPHIMG.nbh, copy that to the root of your SD card and bootload from there.
HOLD ALL 3
Volume Down
Power Button
Stylus Reset
Boot loader will pop up, then follow on-screen instructions.
Works for radio too.
Make sure you unlock 1st though!!
Enjoy.
Oops, almost forgot, this is an excellent resource:

Hi Chaz,
Were you able to connect EvDO after updating the ROM? My TP is only connecting 1x >: GRR

Android 1.6 on Hero?

Hi, this is my first post at this great forum..
Is it possible to have Android firmware 1.6 on the HTC Hero, without HTC Sense (essentially the 1.6 you would find on a G1)?
If so, can someone point me in the right direction to find out how to do this.
Much thanks - Sorry if there is already a thread like this, I searched but didn't find anything matching.
This question has been answered several times. Please use the search tool on the forum?
Could you please post a link to a thread answering my question.
As stated above, I used to search tool to no avail.
Thanks.

- This thread essentially asks the same question I am asking, it seems impossible for the moment other than disabling the sense home screen and some other random hacks to remove HTC applications.

- This thread is the development page for developing a clean 1.6 for Heroes.
Its pretty much impossible at the moment to maintain all functionality while removing the Sense interface which is a real shame. That is, unless I have missed something.
Hope this helps.

It is more that in order to get everything working (hardware wise), the kernel source is pretty much required and we don't have it (yet!).

What's the difference?

Usually I'm really good at figuring things out myself, but I've just gotta ask:
What's the difference between the custom ROMs?
I'm using Fresh right now, but I might as well have spun a wheel and picked at random. I tried browsing each thread, but couldn't find any useful hints as to what it's about. Is it just speed?
I understand that 2.1 is under development and not fully functional, so what is MCR, Fresh, Modaco?
MCR and Modaco are the same MCR = Modaco Custom ROM.
It is just a rom made by Paul O'Brien at http://hero.modaco.com
Really it's another custom ROM, just personal preference dictates which you use. Personally, I use MCR3.0, although there is a beta of 3.1 available for ad-free members of his site, and it will be publicly released when ready.
So the difference between Fresh and Modaco is...?
Fresh is a CDMA Rom, so you'd probably be better off asking this in the CDMA subforum.
Regards,
Dave

You could try and search for yourself, or at least be gratefull for the things Anon and others say
You're not gonna ask here how you're able to flash the motorola droid are you?
Cos the cdma hero is another phone. It has a dedicated subforum and people
who own a gsm hero (the folks over here) can't tell the difference because a CDMA version doesn't work on a GSM hero.
It's easy to blame others for not searching yourself, these people are trying to help. The only thing you want is a list of pro's and con's....
Considering custom roms are made to fit personal needs no one is gonna make a list good enough for you.
Search before you ask

I did! I advised you to ask the question in the subforum for the CDMA Hero, but you decided to ignore that advice.
A little history lesson for you - the Hero forums existed long before the CDMA Hero was released by Sprint. Once Sprint had released their version of the Hero, Sprint users lobbied long and hard for a CDMA subforum (which they've now got). To be honest, the Sprint Hero probably deserved its own set of forums rather than just a subforum, just the Verizon Droid Eris did.
The *reason* that I advised you to go there is because most of the ROM discussions outside of the CDMA subforum is related to the GSM Hero. If you'd flashed MCR 3.1 to your device (as mentioned earlier in this thread), you may well have bricked your device.
Sarcastically saying that "You sure make it easy" when you've been given good advice isn't going to get you very far here!
Regards,
Dave

But he's right. Topics like this one have been discussed over and over again here at xda. If he had used the search function himself he would have discovered some "cool applications" by now. That's how we all acquire the software for our devices: By searching this forum and many other well known sources like the openmarket app store (once again easy to find using google).

good idea, bu might not work for those who haven't yet heard of this modern invention
Wow - old thread is old.
Hi! I'm a noob. Well, technically, I'm not; I just haven't been back here in many years since I first started poking at registries and editing the old wikis (now defunct, horribly broken, etc.), and finally needing to get work done and thus not wanting to play with my WM device very much and switched to Android not too long ago. But given this huge gap, I might as well be designated a noob now so I watched the introduction video (how awesome is that thing?). And one of the things it says is to use google, search, etc. Well, I've done all that (almost, still browsing this forum section and going through a different forum's software announcements, but I've seen more of Handango, pocketpcfreeware, freewarepocketpc and those lot than I'm willing to see again (thankfully, most of them have RSS feeds)), and narrowed down the list of several thousands of apps to... well, still quite a bit more than 100.
So another thing the video suggests is to find similar threads and read those. Here's the thing, though... those also tend to be old. I could find a thread that speaks highly of cLaunch even though people have moved on from that to SPB and then Androkkid or, etc. The best part is - it's almost impossible to untangle! It doesn't help that a lot of software announcements don't even mention what they're compatible with
( Nor that announcements also happen in the 'Windows Mobile Software Development' section. )
I still have to try the XDA Market (is it or is it not dead? The thread is stale. Did I mention the untangling issues already? oh yes, one paragraph back.), but it would definitely be nice if there were a place where those of you who still play with WM devices could discuss apps and come to some sort of consensus as to what 'the best apps' are. I do specifically mention that in plural because I know from my earlier days, and from reading a few threads last week, that people still ask "what is the best X app?" only to be met with "depends on your preferences" which is certainly true but there's always some apps that are going to be significantly better than others.
So here's my dilemma... do I hijack one of the existing threads (as I'm sort of doing now, but please don't see this post as my asking about apps - I'll do a proper post where I detail the apps I've got listed already, my preferences, etc.) or do I start a new thread?
And, of course, in the mean time... if there already is such a consensus-on-app-worthiness list that isn't 2 years old, where might I find it?
Again, not asking for input on apps - just some pointers on where to look, specifically, after having already 'google[d] it'. Then perhaps the next poor sod that comes along and has the same question has a better idea of where to go after his/her brain is filled with app references.
*resumes reading this forum section, then the 'Windows Mobile Software Development' section, and then that other forum*

Given the number of xda members, threads and posts, searching for any info here can be indeed painful, frustrating and often fruitless. I generally prefer google over xda search, but with search results limited to xda forums, so - assuming we search for e.g. "cool WM apps", the search string will look like this:
Code:
cool WM apps site:forum.xda-developers.com
I know it's not a big help, still, the OP question was sooooo general, I mean, for some the cool app will be SpaceTime for WM, while for others it might be Crayon Physics....
Went back here to update my post - hadn't expected a reply, thanks! ( yes, I did press the button, noob-introduction-video! )
Yeah, I did that - but that's a pretty hit-or-miss method at best.. there's a bunch of posts that say something looks like a cool app and that they'll download it and "have a think about it" (broken English ftw) - then they come back saying it doesn't work on their device (WM2003 for a WM6 app)
That's why I'm just going over all of the forum pages (got time to burn - that's why I'm poking at the old WM device to begin with.. it had been collecting dust)
Anyway, the update I was going to make was just to mention that 'XDA Market' does look pretty dead-ish (nothing recent in there, what's in there is a fraction of what's available, and it sure likes to crash a lot). It also looks almost exactly like what I'd need.. I'll have to remember that when I hit its thread here and encourage the devs to pick it up again.

not surprising, given that most of the hardcore HD2 users jumped ship to android, sooner or later WM will be as popular as Palm OS is now, anyway, if your're looking for an app to perform specific tasks, just ask, there is a chance someone might know something
Yeah - just a shame, really.. there's lots of WM devices floating around still that can still find use.
I know, possibly the best use of them is disassembly, re-use where possible (too bad the screens are always undocumented or there would be plenty of Arduino guys with interest in at least that component) and recycle the rest.
But I'm giving the poor thing one last while to shine before doing that (probably the next time I get a new phone, I'll give the store this one).
A functional 'XDA Market' would definitely have helped with that.
I wouldn't blame them if they did abandon it, though.. even Microsoft abandoned their own Windows Mobile market even while WP7 isn't available globally yet, and Windows 8-on-mobile is is sure to kill the WP7 store, too. They're good like that.
I'll open a new thread (I guess is the best option) when I'm ready for it - right now there's still plenty of hidden gems tucked away in these forums that I'll go to, first

So we all know that XDA isn't the most noob friendly forum in the world
XDA as the site description says on the homepage is a site for developers by developers, so its quite natural that noobs will feel out of place here. Well I'm sorry to say that not everyone find XDA to be the most easy to use site. I'm just trying to filter the relevant stuff and put it in one place.
As for the copy and paste, I won't sit down and type that much of text simply when its all present there, though I am gonna try to make it more understandable in certain places later.
Also I have credited everyone for their hard work and I'm grateful to the dev community and you for working so hard on the RAZR and bringing us such cool mods and ICS roms.
And as far as authors are concerned, I don't see a reason why anyone would consider writing for a new random blog that just popped in some part of the world.
So please if you wanna help, constructive criticism would be great!
Redesigned the blog. Now in RED and BLACK to better suit the RAZR's looks!

Matt has all that listed out on his original post for the updated version for 2.3.6
As far as windows not recognizing your device, I would recommend un-installing moto drivers, restarting your comp, then going to moto's dev site and downloading the most recent version (4.83 I think). Once installed, restart comp again, wait til boots up, plug in phone and there ya go. Cycle through all 4 USB connections to have all the drivers installed.

How many bluetooth devices can I connect to my razr?
Thinking abt to buy a bt set - mouse, keyboard & speaker.
Can razr "hold" all this sh** well at the same time?
Just don't want to waste my money ; )

When can we use this mod?
- Use beat audio when we need beat headsets? OR we can use Moto headsets with beat audio?
- Same question with XLoud mod?

Yeah, a blog where I don't see any real AUTHOR of the RAZR modules/mods etc.
Also, it is a simple copy and paste of the posts that you can find both here and into the EternityProject Development Forums.
