Difference between Sim-free and Orange Hero. - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

For the last few days I have been trying to figure out how to add contacts to my Google account using my phone with no luck.
I have the white unlocked Hero and a friend has just got the graphite Orange version. When we were setting up his phone all his contacts were stored on his sim card so needed to be transferred over, using the import function in the people app we were able to import to Google. This got me thinking why don't I just store my contacts on the sim first then import them to Google problem solved. But here is the thing I haven't got Google showing up on my import list, and yes my phone is synced to Google as that's where on my previous contacts come from and if I add a new one on Google it adds on my phone.
To make things even worse I added a new contact on his phone to find out he could save it to Google straight away, which I can't as the only options I have are phone or sim.
So if anyone with the white Hero could have a look at theirs I would appreciate it, as it seems stupid that this would be taken out of the sim free.
Thanks

Do not worry I have sorted it out, just done a complete factory reset and I now have the options to save to Google.
Weird that it didn't work in the first place.

Phone contacts to google account?

Hi
I got my hero last week and i'm loving it at the moment. I want to back up all my contacts to my google account to make them easy to manage and for back up reasons. For some reason though when the phone syncs it doesn't load my existing contacts(carried onto my hero by sim from my old diamond) into my google contacts?
If I create a new contact on either phone or pc it updates the other accordingly but i just cant get my existing contacts to my google contacts.
I can see the ones that update are labeled as google contacts so i'm guessing i have to label my exisisting ones somehow???
Someone please help as i dont want to have to create all my contacts again
Thanks in advance
gaz
Anyone?.........Please!!!!
Gaz
I've been looking at this too. One of the groups from my phone has synced to Gmail, but no contacts. Still looking....

Ok, there is a piece of software on the market which moves contacts from "Phone" to "Google". I'm just googleing to see what it is as I can't remember.
Not sure how effective it is, haven't tried it as I've always synced my contacts to google even on WinMo.
Actually, have you tried doing it that way 1st? Set your Diamond to have an ActiveSync with google (m.google.com) and use your google user id and password. This will send all the contacts from your phone to google. Then sync your Hero.
I can't find the program at the minute (10 minutes of looking) but I'm sure its in this Hero forum somewhere about it. Will have another look in a bit

[Q] Contacts and Google Sync on Vibrant?

Quick question about the way the Vibrant syncs with google:
Every time I add a new contact on my phone, it asks if I want to store to phone, or gmail, and every time i click phone assuming that it would automatically sync with gmail periodically.
Is this not the case!??! I installed a new rom recently and it wiped the phone, and the whole time I was thinkin "o well, it'll resync when I link my account" ... after the rom installation, i noticed that few new phone #s weren't there.
Does that mean every time I add a new number I should always save it to my google account instead of directly on the phone?
And for contacts that are stored on the phone, they appear with a green phone logo next to the contact in the list. Those linked with google appear with a black box and a white "g" inside. How do I convert those stored on my phone to link with google? Do I go "edit" --> "link contact"?
Update:
For contacts that are "google" contacts, they can't be categorized into groups on my vibrant either, because they aren't recognized. Only contacts that I've recently added into the phone are recognized. Is there some trick that I'm not aware of?
I second this question. I used a G1 previously and this new method is extremely confusing.
I currently have NO "contacts" and ONLY google contacts, which means apparently I can't set up any groups because my phone doesn't know who my contacts are!
~A
slick, you bring up another point I wanted to ask about as well! Thanks!
I'm going to amend that into the OP
bump...?
I find it amazing that people have figured out how to turn these phones into toasters, rocketships, nuclear-war-launch-devices and other errata, but haven't figured out how to store contacts correctly...

I always make my contacts google, works good for flashing as much as I do, and also if you upgrade your phone in the future, as long as it is android it will automatically put all your contacts in their for you. If you dont want to do that, there is a paid app called mybackup pro that will backup contacts. But I do suggest that you always use google to save time in the future.
You can link contacts, but all it does is make it so it does not show up as a duplicate contact on your list, your best bet is to log into gmail, go to contacts and add them from there. then you can hit menu and filter what shows in your contact list(facebook/twitter/google). You can add them to google from the phone, but I prefer to add them from gmail or google voice, as i can type faster on my computer.

I recently reflashed a rom and I checked and found out some of my contacts were missing. I checked my gmail contacts and it's there. I checked to sync all my contacts on my phone but it doesn't show up on my phone. I didn't have a problem with my first flash with the rom. How can I resync the missing contacts back to my phone? Thanks!
Yeah...this is definitely one of the worst changes made to Android by the Samsung TouchWiz interface. I had a G1 also, and really liked not having to worry about phone/sim/google contacts. I just want contacts that are always in sync no matter where I go. This is the one thing that will push me to go AOSP once somebody releases a decent rom. As far a I know, no custom ROMs have gotten contacts to be anything other than TW.

Importing .vcf file into Google contacts

I have found an issue and just wanted to see if anyone else has had the same issue. When I try to import a .vcf contact file into my Contacts I am prompted to save to either my Phone or Google. When selecting google I get a couple screens pop up and close very quickly. The first time that I did this I just assumed that it imported successfully, but after looking through my contacts it was not there. I tried again and still no go. If I select Phone it imports into my phone but i have all of my contacts on Google. I also could not find a way to transfer a single contact to Google. I am afraid to sync all of my contacts with Google in the event that it could cause me to have duplicates of all of my other contacts as all but the new imported contact are all on Google.
I tried importing a contact yesterday sent to me in mms and had the same problem of it not importing. I didnt try importing to phone. Let me try
Edit.... Yup importing to phone works

[Q] Weird problem - contacts keep multiplying

Dad had a weird problem with his Samsung Galaxy - all the contacts duplicated numerous times so that sometimes there were 15-20 of each and it didn't matter if they were stored on the Sim card or in the phone.
Carphone Warehouse told him it was faulty and caused by water damage even though it had never got wet and everything else works fine, so he bought a HTC Sensation XL put the sim card in and then the exact same thing happened, so he sent that phone back and got a Samsung Galaxy Nexus which he's had a week, and guess what? it's happened again
All the contacts have been deleted off the sim card so its blank and Dad only entered 6 or 7 contact details into the phone, then today all of a sudden there are multiple copies of some of the contacts - any ideas what the cause is or for a cure? Dad is on Orange pay monthly and has already had a replacement sim card in case the first was faulty.
Cheers
Perhaps it could be synced Google Contacts?
Or any other kind of contact syncs?
Any kind of backup (Titanium Backup, MyBackup, etc?) that would restore the numbers?
Did he/you install any apps before this happening? Any contact/phone/sms/dialer apps perhaps?
No he hasn't synced with Google Contacts apart from when its forced on the Nexus, but he has no contacts to sync anyway as he dosen't use a computer, his only contacts are what he's manually entered. He hasn't downloaded any apps at all, and uses the phone as it come out the box - he only has it cause he likes the big touchscreen and he can see it ok, he dosen't use any features apart from calls, texts, email and the camera.
Hmm, sounds very weird indeed.
You said you tried both getting a replacement SIM card and a brand new phone, but not at the same time?
I would suggest doing a factory reset and a SIM card wipe (or even a replacement if easily possible) at the same time, and then try and enter 1 NEW phonenumber (not one that's been in the phone/SIM card before) and leave it for the amount of time that it took before it began multiplying the numbers before, to see if it does it again.
If it doesn't, try and enter some of the old numbers into the phone, and so on.
If it does multiply, then I don't know what's wrong.

Contacts you manually enter are automatically set to sync with Google contacts. What I think is happening is you keep resetting the phone and he enters in the contacts before all the Google contacts from the previous times are being restored therefore all the multiples are being synced together. So let the phone sit after a restore. The multiples should show up after a little bit. Go through and delete the duplicates and see if they come back.

Cheers I think you may have solved the problem
I logged into Dads google account online and found his contacts and there were 529 with loads of duplicates (40 or 50 of some), so I deleted the lot, turned off autobackup to google and sync on his phone and did a factory reset - he now has no contacts on the sim card, in the phone or stored with google so hopefully when he re-enters them they won't duplicate, I'll give it a few days then see what happens if I let it back-up and sync, but I've a feeling its sorted it.

APP for managing contacts

Im having issues trying to clean up my contacts Ive got many doubles and I want to clean up my phone and SIM contacts its Ive tried before to delete them but they never seem to delete from my contacts.
EDIT: NVM fixed it
For those of us that might be having the same problem, would you mind enlightening us on how you fixed it?
Do it from a PC. Yes it is painful but it only has to be done once. I do not recommend using SIM contacts for a very simple reason. Many people today have email and phones plus IM etc datafilled with their contacts. Only phone numbers are supported on the SIM and even that has a limit of 1 number per contact. so if you have a contact with 4 phone numbers, that will be 4 contacts on your SIM and in your device when you import them.
I know this is the way it worked for GSM long ago and I don't think this has changed.
Best workaround is sync to Google. If you want a local copy after cleaning things up on a PC, export you contacts to your external SD card...
I cleared the data from contacts and contact storage from manage applications and then I synced my google contacts
There is app to delete duplicate contacts ..sorry I forgot the name...but its very effective...and also just like others stated always use google to sysnc contacts...this way when getting new phones...its easier and you wont have duplicates...
