AA batteries as power source - G1 Accessories

For extended use of GPS while backpacking, I was looking to make a 4xAA battery pack with USB output. Using NiMH hydrides of 2500mah, we're talking a nominal 10,000mah. Enough for 7 to 8 recharges of a stock battery and 4 or so of an extended cap battery.
I searched the net for examples to follow in my build and found this nice one: http://www.boxwave.com/products/batteryadapter/ and this cheap one: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.15048
Much better, IMO, than the $20 Radio Shack one that's only 650mah: http://www.radioshack.com/product/i...roductId=3514763&origkw=3514763&tab=techSpecs
NiMH AA's peak at about 1.4V and are done around 1.2V. So we're looking at between 4.8V and 5.6V for the pack. No voltage regulation is needed, unlike the 9V-to-USB adapters floating around (which have very little power to offer).

here is another good one http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ENERGIZER-Mot...er-182002_W0QQitemZ380153488437QQcmdZViewItem it uses 2 aa batteries and is very small and compact. i have 5 of these because they were selling them for 99p in the 99p store

You probably have, but have you thought about the solar battery packs? I've seen small ones, not much bigger than the phone with 3600mah batteries. If the panels exposed while hiking it can charge and then be used later.

but in the winter they become almost useless

I guess they won't charge as quick, but you can charge them off the mains first and then get what you can from the sun. I'm going to get one myself for the next time my mate drags me off on a fishing trip.

You are connecting them in series, hence its not 10 000mah, but 2500mah. . Which is still almost 2x the htc battery anyhow

Wow, silly oversight. Of course, series makes it 2500mah. Hmm.

I was thinking of getting this one, 0.77W 2600mAh £8.99: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Solar-Panel-B...gets?hash=item2a00d452d5&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
This one: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Solar-USB-260...in_0?hash=item45edf30a63&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 is a little cheaper, but there are at least 4 variations of that one with different specs, which puts me off.
This one is pretty sweet, but £40 is a lot, although it has 4W solar panels.

i really like the third one but im a bit skeptical because 60% of the things i order from hong kong end up being fake sometimes very good fakes but they are fakes nontheless. If you decide to buy it let me know how it goes

sorry that last one says 2.2w, not 4w still good though.

Disclaimer: If you try to make a portable charger and end up breaking/damaging your phone(G1 or what ever), don't blame me.
If you chose to make one of these, you will be doing this at your own risk.
Had one of these mobile phone charger lying around for a few years, it might have originally came with a mini usb adapter, but I cant remember and all fittings have been lost for a long time.(pic 1)
Had an expandable usb to mini usb cable from the 1 €/$/£ shop lying around.
Like this but with a mini usb at the end.(pic 2)
Removed the spring winder from the middle of the cable and cut the normal usb plug off, about 6cm(2") from the end.
Stripped the ends of the wires(4)on the normal usb plug, so I can identify the positive and negative.(pic 3)
Hooked up my multimeter to the dark blue and red wires of what was left of the normal usb end(educated guess here , I am sure the colours will be different on other cables, depending on the manufacturer) and plugged it into the computer,be 100% sure you don't short the wires at this point or you will most likely blow(at the very least) the USB circuit on the motherboard of the computer.(pic 4 and 5)
Opened up the mobile charger,it is just a holder for 4 AAA batteries, a diode and a female socket (pic 6)
Stripped the ends of the wire on the mini usb plug, cut away the other two wires, leaving just the dark blue and red.
Added some heat shrink to the wire for support, where it will be exiting the charger.(pic 7)
soldered the red wire to the positive side(diode) of the portable phone charger and bark blue to negative.Insulated the solder joints with heat shrink tubing.
I was getting 6 volts form the mobile phone charger at this point with 4 non rechargeable AAA batteries(4 x 1.5v), I plan to use rechargeable batteries to give me closer to 5 volts(4 x 1.2v) (pic 8)
Pluged it into my usb card reader first and checked to see if the green LED on the card reader came on.(pic 9)
G1 was at 100% charge, so I played some bonsai blast for 10 mins, then took a deep breath and plugged in the charger.
Success and didn't spend a penny/cent doing it, just junk that was lying around.(pic 10/11/12)

This is just to see it it works ok, AAA batteries only hold about 800mAH(rechargeable) , not sure about alkaline/zinc carbon AAA batteries.
The standard G1 battery is 1150mAh, so there is no way I am getting a full charge.
I will run the phone battery down to 50% and see how the charge goes with the standard cheapo AAA batteries in the charger, but will take a week to get a better idea of how well it works or doesn't work.
If it does seems to work ok after a day or two, I will try it with 4 x 2300mAH rechargeable AA batteries and see how they go.
Just to point out for people that don't know, the diode is like a one way gate, it will let power travel from the the charger to the phone , but not the other way around.

The standard 4 x AAA batteries didn't even charge it 1% after being connected for 1 hour, so tonight, I soldered the usb lead onto the 4 x AA 2300mAH rechargables, plug it in at 42% and after 20 mins its up to 49%
I will have to look for a nicer looking battery holder for 4 AA batteries, seems to be doing a great job

Ill upload pics of the device attached to my g1 shortly, but on to the review.
First off
Its on sale at amazon right now, and its worth every penny.
Price: $12.99
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000JLL14E/ref=cm_cr_thx_view
Here is a youtube review by someone else:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WBAFsfy_HU
If i remember correctly, its 1700mah, larger than the stock g1 battery so its plenty juice to fully charge your g1 atleast once. As you can see in the video, its not very big, and its suprisingly lightweight, the g1 weighs significantly more than the charger. Hell, the box it came in weighed as much as the charger.
It takes longer to charge the charger than it does my g1, for obvious reasons, but it charges my g1 as fast as when my g1 is plugged into a wall.
Im definately picking up a 2nd one of these, for the price you just cant go wrong.
Does it really hold a full charge for the G1?
I've seen a bunch of these (I think this is the only portable charger Motorola has) here in Spain for 8$ on sale in a bargains bin at the local market, but I always thought it was intended for a much smaller battery, something like 850mah or 900...

i havnt gone a complete charge on it, but earlier today i went from 17% to 85% and it was still blinking green (the charger) showing that it had above 20% battery life left, so i think it might, ill fully drain my g1 saturday morning and see if it really does give it a "full" charge and let you know.
on a side note, the charger, while being cheap in price, does NOT feel cheap in quality
if you look at the picture, the slide in the center has a bar in the center of it going left to right, its a button, you must be slightly pressing on it in order to slide the slider up, and same to retract it, so it wont accidently slide out and damage the usb tip, it actually locks into place forward and back, and the greatest thing, if you watch the video youll see, the g1 seems to have its mini usb port flipped upside down IMO, so does this charger, so it charges facing the front, the odd thing is the bottom of the charger where you plug in a mini usb to charge the charger, is right side up (opposite of top) lol
the texture of the charger feels like a OEM battery cover for a g1, smooth but without the gloss like the front of a g1

no my mustang broke down and i ended up relying on my g1 for most of the day, but i have to say, it was a life savor having it around, ill attempt to do it tonight, i have to go pretty far so ill use the gps and play music to kill the battery and when i get there ill attempt to charge it via the external charger
on stock battery got a full charge with power to spare, im not rocking a 2200mah, its not fully charging it, but its getting about 60% of the way there

1700mah is the one i got for 13 bucks on amazon, i believe its the only one motorola makes, but it defiantely gave me a full charge in about a hour or so (lost track of time)
definately worth the buy, even more worth it for $8 usd
Ok,
I've looked on the net for reviews and photos and nobody seems to answer my question. Is there two ports one for charging the device and one for charging say your G1?
I'm guessing it uses a special AC adapter and does it use the flip out port or is there another?

as seen in the picture, when you slide the center up, the mini usb comes out of the top, its viewable from the top if you look straight down at it, so it just simply slides out to be able to plug into the phone
on the bottom of the charger, is a mini usb port, just like on the g1, it doesnt have a cover, nor does it flip out, its simply there
basically:
use your g1's charger and plug it into bottom of motorola charger, and plug motorola charger into g1 and youll have both charging at the same time in a straight line, watch the video posted in my first post after reading this and it should all make sence
and no, there is no special adapter, nor a special charger, it comes with a charger, but its no different than the charger that came with your g1, and it works when being charged off of a usb 2.0 port on your computer/laptop
@wootroot
Thanks for the clarification. I wanted to watch the YouTube video, but the tech guys at my work do not allow us to view YouTube videos. I planned on watching it when I got home, but figured after a bit of looking around on the net asking a question couldn't hurt and it worked great.
Thanks
yeah no problem, the only reason i suggested to watch the video is incase my description was unclear, i couldnt think of any other way to describe the charger
I did figure out way around the YouTube block. Put
PWN in front of the YouTube domain in the address and you can download the video opposed to stream.
My reasoning for purchasing this is simple. I 4wheel a lot and I no longer have a cigerette lighter in my Jeep because I turned my Cigerette lighter power lead into a feed to power my in cab winch controller.
Now with this I have a power source for my phone beyond the normal battery when I use the GPS.
However I did some looking around beause I'd personally need a longer cord because I couldn't do the device to device thing because I know it would get broke. Found some mini usb to mini usb extensions on the net. Ebay wanted $25 a cable, but you can find them cheaper. I'm guessing shorter the wire less line loss, but we are not talking 10+ feet here. Just 1 to 3 feet.

Anyways I just wanted to share.
yeah and you can get a splitter cable to charge more than one device, ie bluetooth
I bought one of these the day I bought my G1 at a T-Mobile store no less. They were getting rid of them and had them on sale for 15 dollars each. Sadly after 9 months I broke it. I had it plugged in and oops I knocked it off the G1 and the adapter piece bent. It still holds a charge and charges my phone but I want one with a cord so it doesn't happen again. Anyone seen the HTC portable batteries?

Staples seem to have them on clearance for as low as $6. I have a friend of mine in NY buying 4 of them for me. Since I commute by train, it is so nice to have a way to charge or top-off my G1.
I plug two of them together when charging.

But I am not talking about cradle chargers which can accommodate battery and phone at the same time.
and also not these chargers, they just support the USB as an output not as input!
So with this charger you can charge battery and phone only with AC power.
OK, gotta ask
Why you want this? You can charge the phone directly with a USB to USB-mini cable, and if you have a laptop and use it for any length of time you will plug it in (so one of the cheap plug in chargers would work for this purpose).
For the above reasons I don't think anyone has made a device such as you describe.

Thanks for reply.
I want this kind of charger to charge batteries with some cheap and non-reliable sources during traveling.
Like:
If I charge mobile pone directly I am afraid that the phone will be danaged.
whats wrong with a cradle charger for that? just because it has the dock for the phone doesnt mean you have to use it, and you can get the cradles for cheap on ebay, and ive never seen one just for charging batteries

OK, you must be going to some rough country where there may not be power, correct? I think you may be stuck with simply powering the phone via the USB cable. So long as your manual hand crank only puts out the standard USB voltage, you should be fine.
He didn't want the charger...he's using the hard crank
if you have a multimeter you can check the voltage of the hand crank to determine if its safe to charge the phone directly

Nice diagram you drew out that CLEARLY spells out what you are looking for. Not sure how other people could not understand what you are looking for, as that's something I require for any new phone platform I use. The ability to charge a spare battery from USB power (5v, 500ma+) for when you are somewhere you need to swap batteries and keep the spare charged at all times, etc.
So to answer the OPs original inquiry:
1. HTC OEM spare battery charger, model "HTC BC S300". Uses USB power to charge the spare battery as it has no direct AC input.
2. Seidio's charger that allows for AC or USB powered charging of a spare battery, model "BD3-BCSI3HTP2-BK"
This one is pretty decent as you have two options to power the charger. I can confirm it works either way. The other benefit is you can just replace the charging plate to support other battery types. I bring this charger on any extended trip I go on and keep one in my luggage at all times.
You'll have to google for the model numbers I put in quotes as I do not have enough posts to include URLs in my replies yet. The first hit you get on google should show the relevant info.
As for how you obtain your USB power safely, that's a separate issue that you are on your own.

From the website it appears the HTC BC S300 is for the Touch Diamond or Touch Pro.
http://www.mobihand.com/productaccessories.asp?id=29936&n=HTC-External-Battery-Charger-(BC-S300)
However, the other model should work, but the picture indicates that one would have to buy a male-to-male USB cable rather than the normal A to B cable for it to charge. I think this model would be the one to use.

35 dollars is pretty steep for that IMO
and for the record, i understood what he wants, i was just curios why the combo dock+battery charger was unacceptable, since it has a USB powered battery charger (at least the one i got did, 25 dollars shipped on ebay, even came with a second battery, much better than the 35 for the OEM battery charger)

Oops, I just edited the post you quote. That one was for the original Touch Pro, NOT the TP2.
He wants one that will charge FROM the USB port, evidently so that he can use a portable USB hand-powered generator to charge the batteries. The ones on E-bay will output USB power, but not charge a battery FROM the USB power.
Are you saying you found an e-bay model that charges from the USB? Can you post a link?

No worries.
The Touch Diamond and Pro use the same default 1500mah battery the TP2's do. So the HTC OEM spare battery charger would work fine. That's one thing I love about HTC is they try to maintain the same type of batteries in most of their model line ups. Even their new Sprint EVO phone uses the same battery, nice!
That Seidio product link you listed is the same as the model number I posted. Good point on the cable. You would need a male to male type A USB cable to run from USB power. I carry various USB adapter plugs when I use it.
As for defaultdotxbe's post, seems you have the same concerns... he/she may have overlooked that the OP wanted a charger that runs off USB power. I have yet to see any of the combo docks on fleabay run strictly off USB vs providing USB power.

I guess it is the angle of the picture on the first battery. It is squished flat, and I thought the contacts were on the side rather than the bottom.

Just one flaw it's price is about $20 including shipping.
I was expected something about $10 (as I got my AC charger with $4)

As I see the cradle charger is the best solution from the point of price and practice.
Just I was expecting something simplier and respectively cheaper than that cradle charger but as I see there is no cheaper.

its actually a 10 cent capacitor (or battery) that makes any charger reliable, like my 2 dollar car charger
like this one for example: http://inspectusa.com/emergency-han...r-vzl3883-with-flashlight-compass-p-1109.html
the cranking isnt putting voltage over the USB directly, it charges a button cell battery which in turn charges the phone, so it works like a UPS for a computer system and regulates the voltage going to the phone, so its safe to charge directly (im actually thinking of buying that one myself, lol)
@stevedebi
the only cradle ive ever used was for my old sprint mogul and it charged the battery through USB so i assumed all cradles worked this way
defaultdotxbe
I found cheaper solution:
it applies USB power directly on moving pins to charge battery.
As usb voltage is compatible for HTC TP2 battery charging it will work as portable usb charger.
http://cgi.ebay.com/Universal-Mini-...ultDomain_0&hash=item19bdeabe0e#ht_3931wt_911
it costs just $1.15

Good car charger for your note (or other android smart phone)

I just posted this in my other thread Information on charging the note, but that thread is really lengthy and I thought this was worth mentioning in its own thread for anyone who might be looking for a good car charger, but doesn't want to read 8 pages of other information.
I had been looking for good one, and started with the motorola charger that I've seen recommended a few times. It's cheap, nicely made, and does have the data pins shorted, but for me, it didn't meet my needs because when using GPS in the car. With the screen on, the phone actually discharged and did not charge. It discharged at about 6% per hour. This is not surprising because when measured, it does not put out the max current that the note can accept (it puts out about 850mA of charging current via my measurements). This charger, on the other hand, puts out the max charging current your note can take (1000mA). I have verified this. When using GPS with the screen on, on my note at least, it actually charges the phone at a rate of ~3%/hour instead of discharging. It will even charge the phone if you are using GPS + screen on + also streaming music (ie pandora). That 150mA difference may not seem like much, but for me, it's the difference between discharging or actually charging the phone while using GPS.
A couple of notes... this charger does not come with a cable, so you'll need a generic usb type a to mirco usb cable. Nothing special is needed in the cable... you can get a "charge only" or a data version, any cable will be fine. Amazon has some very inexpensive ones with low shipping costs if you search. There are two ports on the charger, clearly marked on the charger itself, a 1A port and a 2A port. The 2A port will NOT charge your note at the AC charge rate as the data pins are not shorted -- it will charge at 500mA, and your phone WILL discharge instead of charge if you are using this port with GPS, etc. So ignore the 2A port unless you have an iDevice you want to charge with it. The 1A port, however, WILL charge your note at the AC charge rate, and DOES put out the rated 1A. This is the port you want to be using for your Note.
So, if anyone is looking for a good charger for the car, that's it. The only negative thing I have to say about it (so far) is that it is a little bit wobbly once seated in the cigarette lighter. Not enough to come out or cause any problems or anything, but enough to be annoying (to me). Nothing a little electrical tape (or any tape) can't fix quickly and easily, though, if it bothers you enough.

That is the other charger I was talking about that is not nearly as good as the one I'm suggesting. With that charger, if you use GPS while the screen is on, your battery will discharge instead of charge. Even without GPS or the screen on, in the best case scenario, it will still charge slower than the one I've recommended. If you're OK with that, then yes I suppose it's an OK charger. It's cheap, looks pretty cool, and seems well built. But for my needs for a charger, I need a) the fastest charger available, and b) for a car charger, I need one that lets me use the GPS on my phone without losing battery life. That's why I searched and found the one I'm recommending.
I personally hate the wound cord because it puts tension on the phone if you try to use it beyond the wound range (which I almost always seem to do), but that's a totally personal preference. The cord is always fighting me when I'm typing on my phone while driving (Not that I do that )

WHAT? Nonsense. First off, the phone is not going to draw more than 1A, and that is a 1A charger. Second, with the big screen on this thing at high power with GPS it's not too surprising if it just maintains its current charge, but in my week of owning my Note I know it does charge while it's on it, and my Nexus One charged on it just fine.
And the cord is very long, not sure where you're plugging your phone in..
OP said he tested the Motorola charger and it only put out 850mA, not 1A. Another poster in a different thread mentioned that his phone still discharged while using that specific car charger as well. So with heavy use it looks like it is possible for the phone to still discharge with the Motorola charger.
Thanks for the info. Had a Verizon car charger for my defunct droid razr and wasn't giving out enough juice to keep the Note running. Heck, it wasn't even able to keep the droid running.
Will look into the ones mentioned here.

I'm not saying the the phone is drawing more than 1A. I'm saying that the motorola charger does not provide the full 950mA it claims (only provides 850mA), and this one I'm recommeding DOES put out the full 1A it claims. Either way, though, there's one thing I know for sure: the one I've recommended above charges faster than the motorola one, and allows your phone to charge in some scenarios where the motorola one does not. It is a better charger, from the aspect of actually charging the phone. The motorola charger might be fine for a lot of people. 850mA is still a good rate of charge, but unfortunately is just shy of being able to maintain or actually increase the state of charge of your note's battery under a common (for a lot of people) scenario in the car -- using the GPS with the screen on. If, however, the motorola charger is working perfectly for you, that's great. I don't care if you buy the other charger or not, I have no affiliation with the company or amazon or anything, I'm just providing the data so everyone can make an informed decision.
The wound cord thing is totally personal preference, I'm not gonna argue that one way or another.

Just FYI I cannot confirm that this charger has the data lines shorted, so you may not charge at the full ac charge rate. Just because it says 1.8A doesn't mean anything. If it does not short the data lines, it will charge at 500mA (half the rate of the OEM AC charger), whether it's rated at 1A, 1.8A, or 1,000,000A.. Sorry if you already knew this, I just don't want any more people getting confused thinking that as long as the charger says it's rated at 1A+ that they will be charging at the full 1A. This is not the case with our Notes (or most/all? Samsung phones). No charger can or will charge faster than your OEM charger, unless your OEM charger is defective. The speed can only be matched, not exceeded.
Here's a scenario using the Motorola charger that is baffling me. I agree with the OP...using my Note with GPS and playing mp3 music at the same time does discharge the oem battery at a slow rate. But if I follow the same scenario, but use a cheap Hyperion 2600mah battery in place of the Samsung oem battery, it actually charges during use! Not fast, only about 3% an hour, but that beats a discharge situation! Why is this?

Great informative post OP! Thanks! I was actually looking into this yesterday and your post is exactly correct. I currently have two Motorola chargers and yup, the Note discharges when using the GPS. I was looking into a new charger and ordered the exact same one you mentioned (in white).
What is surprising to me though is how you mentioned the 2A plug will not output the proper amp, so I have to use the 1A port instead? Do you know why they made it this way? It is just weird how they designed it.
Thanks!

Not 500ma charger

Transformer Prime AC charger safe? My stock one is not good...

Hi!
I noticed my phone takes a long time to charge and some times when using it while charging I will get a message about the phone being discharging as the power supplied was not enough or something along those lines.
I downloaded the battery status widget and noticed that at best, the charger goes to about 850 but for that I have to keep moving it as it seems some where inside the ac adapter and the USA adapter plug connected to it, something is going wrong.
I tried the original Sony usb cable and a different one as well.
Either way, when I move the AC Adapter parts connected to the wall, the charge changes and go crazy on the Batter Status widget , sometimes even shows like not even plugged any more :/
So I thought about trying my Transformer prime charger or I can try ordering another one that you guys may recommend.
Thanks!
Here is a pic of the specs on that adapter.
Or maybe I can use a Samsung one like this?

Although the above seems to be a fake...so maybe just go with a sony one?

Looks like your Asus charger is 1.2A (1200mAh), so it's not the beefiest one out there. I'm not sure what the Sony one is, but i think it's 1.5A. Mine outputs around 800 - 1300mAh on the magnetic charger, and it uses around 2 hours to charge it from 0-100%. I usually charge it when i go to bed, but i'm always using it when it's charging in the dock, like wathcing YouTube videos and TV shows. I have never gotten a notification that says it's being discharged while i charge.
Does it get hot when it charges? (spoiler: it shouldn't do that)
I would buy a new - genuine, Sony charger. The thing is, if you buy or use a different charger and your battery goes to ****s, you can wave goodbye to your warranty. Also, since the battery isn't replacable you should treat it like your own son.
But let me summon @hamdogg for you. He knows a lot more about batteries than i do. I guess he'll show up in a minute or 12 hours. Hard to tell But he's on his way.

hahahahah, you see that Asus charger confuses me because it says but then below it also says Output 5V=2A or 15V=1.2 I dont want to fry my phone!
So you get from 800 to 1300 using the Dk30?
Also, what is the model of your Sony charger. I want to try finding one with USA plug already so maybe that Sony one is the best option for me even though I would like to start going with Magnetic charger myself OR charging an external battery (if I get one) to avoid using the USB port too much.
I got the DK30 bundled with the phone. The charger model is EP880 and it outputs 1500mAh. It only says Sony on the dock itself.

Got ya. Well I decided to get the DK30 even though now I am having second thoughts since some user seems to be having luck just using the magnetic adapters and connecting any usb cable to that adapter instead..but oh well, I guess I will get the DK30 and see how it works out for me.
Still trying to decide on that 4500mAh case/battery too!

Sorry have been away for a few days...
amps are fine no matter what the range. So 1.5 right up to 4.0 amps will not damage your device.
Volts on the other hand can damage your device. Don't go above 6v.
You should be able to get 5.v and 2.0 amps out of a wall charger, if not then its not been made properly, or not efficiently
[I have a 2.1amp unit and it suits me fine]
The difference is that your device will pull what ever I can up to a maximum, It look like the ultra can only pull 2200 (give or take) out of a charging unit, so any wall charger that states its over 2.5 amps will be a waste.
-So don't pay extra for anything above 2.2amps thinking you'll get faster charging. You wont.

I got a free 5000mhz solar charger unit sent to me to review. I'll make a video for my channel shortly about this unit. Think it retails for $15 USD. Look pretty good, just need to test it on my ultra in a few days.
The thing with battery packs, is that it needs to be 200% larger than the internal battery. So if your Ultra battery is flat, then it charges off the 5000mhz battery pack, that would mean to it wont fully charge the ultra. It will get to 2500mha, and the battery pack will get down to 2500mhz, and then it wont be able to transfer charge. (Unless you can give charge to pack)
So my solar pack can charge my device to 75%, and then continue to charge it while the solar panel charges the pack..
Does that make sense??
There we go

Awesome charger! RAVPower 14000 mAH Deluxe Power Bank

Every year, I get more electronics and every year I need more power! Portable power is my biggest need. Ravpower has many great products I use. But the RAVPower 14000 mAh PB-13 is definitely fitting those needs best for me. This thing is a beast. If you are a busy person with a lot of gadgets, this is for you. If you travel a lot like me, then this is most definitely for you.
The RAVPower 14000 mAh PB-13 is powered with a Samsung Lithium-Ion battery. The power bank is charged via a micro-USB port on the side. It is rated at 100-240V. 2-USB to USB-micro cables is provided. Multiple adapters for various devices and a travel mesh bag. It even has a LED flashlight, which is operated by a 3-second press of the power button.
The design is simple and the battery is very simple to use. I have a white one, they have black also. 4-blue LED's provide an indication of the battery status of the Power Bank. It has over current and short circuit protections built in. Charging is really easy. It has a superfast output charge. Dual USB ports provide a 1A and 2A availability. So, yes you can charge 2 devices at once. The 2A plug will drive a lot more power to your phone.
I use this mainly to charge either my laptop or Galaxy Note 3. I can start with a full charge on my RAVPower 14000 mAh with a dead phone and get almost 3 full charges. On my laptop I have never really used it for more than a boost. What I do notice is I can use my laptop steadily for about an hour and battery life remains stable. If I just use it for a quick boost while leaving the laptop idle I see it increase at about 10% every 20 minutes or so.
In conclusion, all I can say is this is my go to of all the chargers I have. It has never failed me and I use it almost daily. If you need a boost in your charging life, then this is for you.

Thanks Bro. It looks nice.
Yeah, thanks for that link to the promo. I was about to start looking for an external battery for my Mom, so I think I'll give her my older 10000 mAH Anker and keep the RAVPower(s) for myself. This looks like a nice pair of batteries for $40. The extra pocketable one seems like it'll be pretty handy.

I have the 10,400 mAh and 14,000 mAh RavPower bricks... Have had them since November 2013. just wanted to chime in that these things are great - I use them all the time to charge my devices away from an outlet - for my Note 3 and Nexus 7 tablet. Each last about two weeks before I need to charge them on my usage. Each brick has it's own personality (the 10,400 mAh refuses to charge iPhones, but my coworker's 10,400 mAh RavPower will). The 14,000 mAh can take FOREVER to charge unless you use a 2.1+a charger (like an iPad charger). It's very nice not to be tethered to a wall when you need/want a charge. I'd highly recommend grabbing some Monoprice android cables as the cables included are super super super short.
I highly recommend these and use them every day. I got the 10,400 mAh during a sale for $20 and the 14,000 mAh for $39 on Amazon. My coworker also got the 10,400 and the 14,000 for his ipad/iphones at the same time. He loves them as well.
Edit: I've bought their 2.1a chargers and recommend those as well. http://www.amazon.com/RAVPower®-RP-...d=1399308094&sr=8-7&keywords=ravpower+charger but even though it says 2.1a it does not charge as fast as the iPad's 2.1a charger.
The one thing I'm wondering is how fast does it charge the Note 3 from 0 to 100%?

I never drain my Note 3 to 0% - I'm a strong believer in the li-ion 20%-80% if it can be helped. But I can run that test for you if you want - but it might take awhile - normal usage I hit 50% after a day. An unscientific educated (based on use) guess -- the 2amp RavPower port is 20-30% slower than a 2.1A iPad wall charger. The 1amp port charger is slow.
Running BajaRom KKv1 with NC2 firmware - rooted with bloatware removed. I have the Battery HD pro app by smalltec.ch - and that estimates time left, time to full charge. So I can do that for a more "scientific" guess. Using a USB 2.0 cable (same one) for tests.
OK here we go (I left screen off for 1% charge so it could get a semi accurate charge to 100% reading):
73%
2.1a iPad 3 Charger: 38 min left.
74%
2A port - RavPower 14,000 - 1 hour 1 min
75%
1A port - RavPower 14,000 - 1 hour 20 mins
76%
Samsung 2a OEM Charger - 34 min left.
79%
1a iPhone charger - 43min left.

Great breakdown, same here as far as 0%, I never go down that low.....I get to about 20% usually and start using these chargers...but I never wait until 100% either.....at night when I go to sleep I have the RavPower usb dock and I set it in there to charge....I use my 14000 and my 6000 for about 20 minute charges at a time....sometimes a little longer...just depends on my needs at the time...also I can run any test you like , just let me know...But big props to BigMcGuire for the test he ran...thx bro...
