Root purely for speed? - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm thinking about rooting my hero, but not sure if it's worth it in my case. I'm happy with the level of access I have, so not interested in fiddling with the next layer of options etc that rooting allows.
The only reason I would do it is improved speed. Is it worth it from that point of view?
It's a HTC Hero from T-Mobile, although I bought it unlocked (using it with vodafone).
Some info:
Model number: T-Mobile G2 Touch
Firmware version: 1.5
(are any of the others relevant? software version? build number? baseband number? kernel version?)
Or would it be a better option to try to upgrade the software version through HTC or through T-Mobile?
Thanks.

Same here... I want to root my phone, is there a way to unroot it? I just want to uninstall nascar, etc. Don't wanna jack it up tho

you can unroot the phone, but you won't get any speed from rooting. if you want speed install modacos custom rom 2.9, it's android on crack
build number would be interesting to determine the difficulty to root your phone.

Actually yes when I said root I was thinking for the purposes of changing the rom.
My build number is 1.76.110.6 146733 CL#47214 release-keys
Are the following links applicable for rooting my device?

afaik with this build the easiest way is to just install the custom recovery image via fastboot, as it is still possible. this would be the method in the stickies over at modacos, which is pretty straigtforward. you can try it, either it works or it doesn't.
edit: the method described in the videos should work also. i think i had this rom on mine, i just installed the custom recovery and flashed mcr2.x.

When you say root do you mean so you can add other ROMs or do you mean so you can add/remove system files?
More information would be handy go to settings > about > software version and post
Firmware version, Baseband version, Kernel version, Build number, Software number and Browser version.
ok.
Firmware 1.5
Baseband version 63.18.55.06JU_6.35.08.29
Kernal version 2.6.27-430d1aea
[email protected] #983
Build number 2.73.771.73 CL#94055 release-keys
Software version 1.0.0.A6288
I want to be able to install custom roms and add/remove system files etc.
Thanks.
There is my newbie guide in my sig or there is a "1 click method" being discussed in a topic in the dev forum which you might want to look at.

Well first of all your going to need a recovery ROM onto your hero to allow you to install custom ROMS. Some ROMS come with ROOT, Some Don't.
Because you have build 2.73.771.73 you will need to first install the flashrec application and then download a recovery ROM and use flashrec to load it onto your phone. The recovery ROM is the gateway to unlocking your device for maximum potential.

Thanks for your reply,I will try that.
Sorry, but if I do the above procedure using the MODACOPATCHEDRECOVERY 1.0 rom will this mean my hero is then rooted?
Thanks

I have no knowledge of this ROM, but what you can do is ask from where you got it from.

[Q] Hero back from repair - Which root method to use?

Hi,
I recently received my phone back from HTC repair. It's an unbranded hero, the software on it is :
Firmware v : 2.1-update1
Baseband 63.18.55.06PU_6.35.15.11
Software : 3.32.405.1
It wants me to download the following OTA update: "system upgrade 3.32.405.2 (5.87mb)"
I had no problems rooting the phone the long way from 1.5 when I first got it, but after I sent it back to htc the first time (unresponsive lower touchscreen) I tried to use the oneclick root method unsuccessfuly (it said root successful but it said permission denied when I typed "su" etc), and then the phone became essentially bricked when I allowed it to dl the OTA update. I don't want to make the same mistake again!
Which root method would you guys recommend I use this time?
Many thanks!
1click root mate it works on all versions of the hero
You can also follow this guide to root it manually.
http://www.villainrom.co.uk/forum/s...o-Root-The-2.1-RUU-or-OTA-Update-For-The-Hero
I think I'd prefer to do something other than the 1 click root after what happened last time!
The villain method says its for 2.1 ROM RUU - is this what they will have used at the repair centre? Does it tie in with the sotware version I posted in the OP? Or should I use an RUU and then follow the method to be sure?
I've been without my phone for 7 weeks now, just don't want to mess it up again! But equally I dont want to be stuck on an unrooted phone
I believe Unrevoked works very well for extremely easy Hero rooting? Not used it myself but heard good things.
Moved to Q&A as not development
Im in the same boat as you. when my phone was returned it was
Firmware v : 2.1-update1
Baseband 63.18.55.06PU_6.35.15.11
Software : 3.32.405.2
Looking to root now. Cant decide on a rom or a method. Any other suggestions?

This root method (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=726118) is the one I prefer (yes, I posted it, but it seems to be easiest method if you have ADB set up, or follow the guide to enable it)
Rooted as per pulser's guide, all is good
FYI iknorr I DID NOT install the OTA update I mentioned in my OP
Many many thanks to pulser, the rest of the villain guys for the roms, and to btdag for his guide on taming adb on windows 7
thanks for the suggestion & info...
Ill give it a go tommorrow i think. Ill post an update.

I used pulsers method dude and its been cool since. It might take 3-4 times to take so make sure your chosen Rom is on SD ready first.

[Q] OTA update for the t328w

Hi all,
My Chinese t328w is requesting I update to 1.73.709.4. I am however on a custom rom:
Kernel version [email protected]#1PREEMPT
Baseband 1.06.34D.05_20.22.30.23U
Build No. 1.59.709.3 CL 68502 release-keys
Would it be beneficial to upgrade?
What are the benefits?
What would the downsides be (i.e. would I lose Google services etc)?
Would I still be able to change ROM’s with this upgrade?

You must go back to the stock RUU, and make the updates. After this operation you can install custom roms

[Q] Can I update android in this device?

Hello!
I got this phone for free, can I update it to Android 4.2? If somebody can point me to a tutorial (topic), I found several but since I'm new to the mobile world I'm kinda afraid of ruining the device. I think it's unlocked since I can put any chip on it without a problem.
Model
GT-N9300
Android version
4.0.3
Baseband version
DM_BASE_12A_W12.43|sc6820_modem|11-02-2012 17:53:08
Kernel version
2.6.35.7
Software version
6820_2.3.5_C909_hteng_s2_en_V02
Hardware version
1.1.0
Thank you!
PS: It shows no updated available, even after lifehacker .com/5946585/force-an-android-device-to-check-for-a-system-update
If the force update shows that this phone doesn't have a update available. Their might be some unofficial roms which are released by people other than your carrier but this might need you to root and install a recovery on your phone but it is highly unlikely due to the fact that this phone is a clone and doesn't have as big of a user base as the originals.

You can follow the guide here to root and load the older GB OS: LINK
If you just want to get back to GB, you can probably just stop after step 28/29 depending if you want it to be rooted or not after downgrading.
