Submitted Nov 06, 2008 by crystal
The Official Twitter Commands
Did you know: you can perform certain actions, like following or marking a friend's update as a favorite, by using the designated Twitter commands? Use the commands listed below from your phone, the web update box, or your favorite third party application.
Please note : When using these commands make sure that you do not append an @ along with it.
For example, if you want to turn on device notifications send only ON and not @ON.
Similarly, if you want to stop getting updates from Twitter send STOP and not @STOP.
If you send these commands with an @, it will be considered as an username and will not be executed as expected!
Read on to know more Twitter commands..
Turning Twitter off and on: device notifications
*
ON: turns ALL phone notifications on.
* OFF, STOP, QUIT, End, Cancel, Arret or Unsubscribe: turns ALL phone notifications off.
* ON username: turns on notifications for a specific person on your phone. For example, ON alissa.
* OFF username: turns off notifications for a specific person on your phone. For example, OFF blaine.
* FOLLOW username: this command allows you to start following a specific user, as well as receive SMS notifications. Example: follow jermy
* LEAVE username: this command allows you to stop following a specific user, as well as stop receiving SMS notifications. Example: leave benfu
Fun Stuff: friends, favorites, and stats!
There's more to Twitter than OFF and ON! Use the commands below to send private messages, mark updates as favorites, or even remind someone to update their Twitter page if you're wondering what they're doing!
* @username + message
directs a twitter at another person, and causes your twitter to save in their "replies" tab.
Example: @meangrape I love that song too!
* RT username
Retweet's a users latest Tweet
* D username + message
sends a person a private message that goes to their device, and saves in their web archive.
Example: d krissy want to pick a Jamba Juice for me while you're there?
* FAV username
marks a person's last twitter as a favorite and causes the message to show up in your "Favorites" tab.
* SET LOCATION placename
updates the location field in your profile
Example: set location san francisco
* WHOIS username
retrieves the profile information for any public user on Twitter.
Example: whois jack
* GET username
retrieves the latest Twitter update posted by the person.
Example: get goldman
* FAV username
marks a person's last twitter as a favorite. (hint: reply to any update with FAV to mark it as a favorite if you're receiving it in real time)
Example: fav al3x
* STATS
this command returns your number of followers, how many people you're following, and your bio information.
* INVITE phone number
will send an SMS invite to a friend's mobile phone.
Example: Invite 415 555 1212
Noteworthy Facts
* using on/off username from your phone only stops notifications to the place the command comes from; you'll still collect a person's updates on the web.
* using follow/leave username from your phone is the same as using on/off username.
* following someone from a phone for the first time will also cause you to follow them on the web.
* there is no way to stop following a person on the web without visiting their profile and removing them. The off, leave, stop, and quit commands will only disable updates for the device(s) from which they were sent.
* you don't have to use on/off username from the phone, you can also set individual notifcations from a person's profile page, or check your following page and manage all phone notification settings there.

Google SMS
Google has a beta SMS service which answers queries sent from your mobile phone or device. Simple conventions are used to express queries for phone book listings, dictionary definitions, product prices, etc. Google touts their service as
“Just text. No links. No web pages. Simply the answers you’re looking to find.”
Examples of queries are “pizza 21228″ to find pizza places near UMBC or “george bush, washington dc” to find the address and phone number of the US president and “Price ipod 20gb” to get a prices (and sellers) for an ipod. The SMS messages are sent to the 5-digit US shortcode 46645 which corresponds to GOOGL on most phones. My mobile phone has a good browser, but I think I’d prefer to use this SMS service for the supported common query types for several reasons. The interaction model is simpler and a better fit when I’m away from my desk. I can fire off a query without bringing up a page and navigating to the query form. I don’t have to and am not tempted to sit and wait for the result page to come up, but can do somethihg else with my phone. Finally, the results come back in a very compact form — more suited for a small screen.

Now you can keep your profiles updated without needing internet access or access to a mobile browser. This service is currently only availabe in the U.S and U.K, if you’re in areas outside of these 2 countries, release date is not annouced yet.
Here is a list of items that you can update through the SMS:
Update your personal message
Check your Windows Live Calendar

Get contact info for people in your Windows Live contact list
How?
You will need to register your mobile number with Windows Live and then send a text message with a “command” to a shortcode as the following:
If you’re in the US and your mobile operator is AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, or Nextel, your shortcode is MyLive or 695483.
If you’re in the UK and your mobile operator is Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile, O2, or Virgin, your shortcode is 88804.
Now we’re going to explore the 4 different items that you can do as listed above.
Update your personal message
To update your personal message, create a new text message, type the command update followed by your personal message, and send it to the shortcode (provided above).
Check your Calendar
To see your Windows Live Calendar events for today or tomorrow: Send a text message with the command today or tomorrow. Windows Live sends you a text message that lists the date, time, and subject of each event. To get more details about an event, reply with the event number.

If you aren’t syncing your Windows Live contacts(or if you don’t have a Windows Mobile phone and can’t sync), you can use SMS commands to search your contacts and see contact details. To search your Windows Live contacts: Send a text message with the commandsrch followed by the name of the person you’re looking for.

Command List
This page details the commands to be used with the share price subscription text service, details of which can be found here.
All SMS commands are sent to 85080 and always start with LSE
Command Description Example Usage
START
Code:
Starts a working-day subscription schedule at the time the command is sent. For example, a START [code] command sent at 9:30 am on Monday will request a text on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday continuously until a STOP [code] is requested. LSE START VOD
START When used on its own, the START command resumes a paused service. LSE START
STOP [code] Stops all current subscription schedules related to a given share. For example, if you had 3 schedules set up for Vodafone each day at 9am, 1pm, and 4pm, the STOP [code] command issued with the vodafone code would stop all 3 schedules. LSE STOP VOD
STOP When used on its own, the STOP command deletes all schedules, which will stop any further SMS messages being sent, until a START command is used to set up a new schedule. LSE STOP
PAUSE The PAUSE command simply puts your subscription service on hold, until it is resumed with a START command. Any messages that would have been sent while the service is paused are NOT re-sent. LSE PAUSE
If you have any further queries about the service, please feel free to Contact Us.

[POLL] which new app is most desired by YOU?

Please read these 5 ideas I have and then make a vote to the app you would love to use the most and would most likely donate towards serious (and opensource!) development. If you are unclear about anything, please ask before voting! Thanks.
1. Better FaceBook Sync - like BookSync, but instead of being restricted to Facebook's ToS it would use the html interface to additionally sync these infos:
* Sync all friends photos with captions tags and comments for offline browsing.
* Phone numbers
* Email addresses (yes, I am aware it's a .gif)
* Addresses
* Facebook Events (and Friends' events)
* as well as profile pics (high res), date of birth (for birthday reminders), name (girls who marry update on your phone instantly)
* option to only silently sync when using wifi (and of course, only updates get pulled down)
2. Better Lock - replace the default WM 6.x security lock feature where you enter a PIN every 24 hours or so, with a much more friendly AND more secure version:
* Incremental Challenge/Response: Have your PIN as 8 or so digits but every 12 hours or so (configurable) it will ask for just 1 digit ("Enter the 4th digit of your PIN"). Enter it wrong and it'll ask for 2 digits now. Wrong again.. 4 digits and so on. Additionally, every 24 hours or so, ask for extra digit.
* While locked, allow for basic functions such as wifi on/off, email/text/call anyone already in address book, turn device off, allow reading of texts that contain a magic password (so owner can communicate with "thief").
* Button to show owner info (incase it's lost) with sub-button to call owners emergency contact number
* 3 invalid attempts = phone texts and calls emergency number and/or integrates with RemoteTracker
3. Better Marketplace - like Microsoft Marketplace and AppToDate merged with improvements
* Microsoft Marketplace requires each dev to upload and maintain thier app (never gonna happen with 100% esp abandoned but still useful apps)
* AppToDate is abandoned? Last update 2008..
* Allow free software only!!!!
* Allow trusted mods to upload apps on behalf of devs, making this BetterMarketplace very comprehensive
* UC compatible & allowing user to record installed apps to our server so after hard reset you can enter user/pass and automagically get all your favourite apps installed
* Compatibility Matrix: only apps that work on your phone are displayed (eg, qvga/vga and wm5/wm6 and so on)
* Popularity Contest: rank apps based on usage in total minutes. This way, only the truly useful apps get to top of list
* Install via web.. using your user account, you can click to install from the Web interface... and your ppc will amazingly start to install it! ppc application interface will exist too ofc.
4. Mobile Proxy - a http proxy on your phone that modifies your web experience via plugins ideas such as:
* Google Maps Mobile - allow supercaching.. which means remember map segments forever on SD card. Perhaps even precaching your area.
* Windows Live Messenger - allow use of MSN when offline. I often turn my phone on/off often and drives friends insane as they see me go offline..online..offline..online. To solve this, this proxy plugin could re-route MSN protocol via our desktop computer so that a) we can sign into multiple locations, something the ppc app doesnt support yet and b) we can receive and view messages we missed while ppc was offline, same for sending msgs could be queued.
* Ad blocker, flash blocker, javascript blocker
* Send custom headers to custom http servers (to fake/force mobile or desktop view per site)
5. Email Redefined - not too sure about my competence to pull this one off though.
Instead of receiving a torrent of email to my device, half of which I don't care about, separate emails into 3 distinct channels:-
1. General crap. When received has no notification, not even a number next to the titanium email plugin.
2. From humans not in my address book. New senders get an instant reply asking them to complete a captcha if they want my mobile to buzz.
3. From friends who are in my address book. I would get a sound played, much like a 'new SMS' sound, and titanium would show "1" next to email.
* If possible with Mobile Outlook, treat facebook inbox-messages as emails.. so buzz, play a sound, and allow reply (via fb).
* If possible (might cost the user), add email push facility whereby the phone receives a hidden SMS text when you have a new email worthy of a beep/buzz, wakes up (but with screen still off and device locked), connects to data (wifi/3g, as configured), gets the email, then beeps/buzzes.
Better Facebook and Marketplace definitely! Those are a must!
Can't decide between Marketplace and Proxy. I LOVE your ideas for marketplace, but I've been wanting to sign into multiple locations since I've had IM on my phone. I hardly ever sign into my IM's because of it. I think I'm going with Marketplace with Proxy being a close second.
Bump (1 of 2).
It would be useful if some of you could post a reply like the above 2 people did too.. as it seems voting in a poll does not bump this thread.. (a forum bug imho). Also useful if anyone can point out competition (free or payware) to each and any of my ideas, unless already mentioned. Thanks!

Any one use ‘Calling Feature’ invite on Whatsapp- Don't use it is a Malware.

If you have received have received a text invitation for the popular messaging service application’s voice calling service, please don’t accept it. Cyber scammers are circulating these fake messages.
According to the recent report by the Daily Star, if Whatsapp users click on the link, they are taken to another website where they are asked to take a survey on behalf of the popular messaging service. But, the survey forces users to download applications and software that might contain dangerous malware.
Be carefull while using Whatsapp.

Bulk / Mass SMS Sender

Hi everybody,
In my business, I have many clients that I want to contact by SMS INDIVIDUALLY (not group message) to send important updates.
I searched and tried for weeks many of the apps out there and none was satisfying:
1/ Import numbers from Excel Sheet
2/ Accept pasted numbers separated by semi-colon ";"
3/ Have delivery reports
4/ Preferably, SMS will be sent with adjustable time intervals.
5/ Ideally, it would allow SMS templates with names and other fields inserted automatically...
I need 1 or 2, at least one of these options. Options 4 and 5 are a plus but not necessary.
Do anyone of you have an idea of any app or Computer software that can do this using one's operator, and not a third party SMS system ??
cheers...
Have you tried using services such as BulkSMS and SendPulse? They might fit your needs.

Thank you for your reply.
Well , I have a very good deal with my operator for SMS messages (around 0.15 €) which I think will be difficult to beat for my country (Tunisia) !
That's why, what I really need is an app which uses my carrier to send SMS messages...
No one has any idea?
FreeTextSMS Web Bulk SMS Solution deserves your try
In fact, bulk sms or similar sms apps are permitted on Google Play.
This kind of app is not easy to be uploaded to Google Play because of Google Play's strict spam policy.
So I suggest you to try it from XDA Labs: https://labs.xda-developers.com/store/app/com.joege.freetextsms
Any question or problem, you may catch me through my signature.
Short introduction:
----
FreeTextSMS.net Web SMS Solution is a tool that will allow us to read and answer any SMS we have received on our mobile phone from the operator of any computer.
Using FreeTextSMS.Net Web SMS Solution will be really easy even for users who are not too familiar with this type of process. The first step will be to create a personal account on your website, after which we will only have to scan with the camera of our mobile phone the QR code that appears on the screen of our computer. This will automatically open an interface from which we will have access to the entire SMS system of our Android device and from which we can read and respond to any text message.
One of the most interesting features of FreeTextSMS.Net Web SMS Solution is the fact that it allows us to program the date and time of departure of any SMS, an option that will be very useful especially in the workplace.

FreeTextSMS Web Bulk SMS Solution is a bad idea. It has limitation like 3 groups and 5 members/group for the free version.
@nghozzi
So you ask for developing a custom messenger with some interesting features
My 2 cents:
If you're on a Windows computer then you can create a Windows command script that does most of the features requested.
The heart of such a script would be utilizing Android's built-in standard messenger via ADB
Examples:
Android 5 and older (here Android 4):
Code:
adb shell service call isms 5 s16 "com.android.mms" s16 "+01234567890" s16 "+01000000000" s16 "Hello world !" i32 0 i32 0
Android 6 and later (here Android 9):
Code:
adb shell service call isms 7 i32 0 s16 "com.android.mms.service" s16 "+1234567890" s16 "null" s16 "'Hey you !'" s16 "null" s16 "null"

Sms weather query server app

Hello, I've been a long-term occasional user of xda for troubleshooting and general resource, but this is my first time ever posting.
Background to my question: I enjoy travelling by bicycle (bike touring, bikepacking, etc.). While in foreign countries, I'll often get a simple cellular plan, which usually includes free sms but limited to no data. While travelling by bicycle, knowing the weather forecast can be pretty beneficial.
Not being a developer, I have come ask if the following idea possible.
App idea:
-A friend or family member who does have regular access to data and/or wifi has the server app installed on their device. The app is given permission to read text messages.
-I, the traveller, can send syntaxed sms messages to the friend or family member with the server app. The message will include the location that I want a weather forecast for and perhaps other parameters (hourly, 36 hour, 3 day, 7 day, etc.)
-The server device receives the sms. The app checks if it's from a registered phone number, checks for syntax, performs query for weather forecast for requested location, then modifies the forecast to send in a reply sms.
-I get my requested weather forecast without having to use my own data
Any complications that could come up?
There many groups of people that could benefit from this sort of app, not just those travelling by bicycle. Some people who travel or venture in rural/backcountry areas use a SPOT or InReach device. Some of these devices are capable of sms transmission via satellite, depending on the subscription.
Thanks!
