[Think Tank] using Gallery3D source code as a launcher / music library / socialmedia - Nexus One Android Development

There is so much potential in the content displaying gold mine that is the 3D Gallery.
Can you picture browsing contacts or applications the same way you swipe through image thumbnails in the Gallery?
imagine modding the gallery code to display thumbnail lists that scroll up/down instead of horizontally. then...
Picture adding a custom provider that uses the facebook API to browse and fully interact with facebook in a 3D gallery type environment (im not talking about just looking at peoples pictures.)
How about adding a provider for RSS feeds...
Gallery3D is based off the web image gallery Cool Iris
The full source code for the actual gallery3d apk is here:

What we need:
Can you play a valuable role in the development of this project? maybe.
if one of the available positions below looks like a fit for you, reply to this thread or send a PM with a little information about yourself and your experience level/example projects you've worked on
Project Manager/coordinator
A project overseer if you will. This person needs to have management and interpersonal skills
2 - 5 Code Contributors
Arguably the one of the most important parts of any project of this scope.
Experience with Java Coding, Android Programming, and understanding of Open-GL ES is needed.
2 - 3 graphics guys (or ladies, wink ((kidding (((kinda)))
hand full of testers / guinea pigs

thoughts, more ideas?

I think it sounds like a fantastic idea and would go a long way in making android apps much more polished and aesthetically pleasing.

Great idea! Do you know where you can get the source code of this gallery? Is it available in Android sources ?

This is a lot like the Metro (WM7/Zune HD) UI. I like it.

yup. the source code is available.

ahhh, I hope a dev can get it poppin.

the source code is available here (android open source project)
@Geniusdog254 that't actually exactly what I thought when I was looking through the Gallery3D in a folder that had a ton of pictures.
I would be willing to help organize a project to get this up and running based on community coding and support. Here's the grocery list of what we'd need to get started:
Project Manager/coordinator
2 - 5 Code Contributors
2 - 3 graphics guys (or ladies, wink ((kidding (((kinda)))
hand full of testers / guinea pigs

A music app PLeeaaze. The stock music app is so boring it would be so much nicer with the gallery look.

I think the 3d gallery would a be good implemented for music collection

Just thinking about it...
You could even have the 'gallery' as Genres or Artist..etc.
Lots of scope here.
Very happy to test but no coding skills I'm afraid

I recommend two starting points when getting into actual android/java programming.
First you will need a crash course in Java programming... from what I've read, this is one of the best books to start with: "Head First Java"
maybe a quick google search can turn up a 'preview'
Second, I highly recommend "Beginning Android 2" for the android specific stuff.
again... a google search does the body good
That's where I'm starting. Oh by the way, if anyone is even slightly interested in java... BUY that head first book from Amazon, its a gem.

I'm down to be a tester...
also, since the source is available you should rename this thread [think tank]

Sounds like a great idea. I hope Google has already thought of this and its under development and part of froyo. Anyway... the albums can be the new album and the pics can be the songs.. this would be so epic and such a nice way of implementing and recycling what already exists. I use to code when I was in HS but i don't remember enough and don't know almost anything about java or whatever else is needed to contribute. But I am willing to test.

It's not as easy. You guys would need experience coders. I've played around with the code sometime ago. It's Java+OpenGL ES. Expect to see dirty codes of Google etc.

I'm a UX guy. I can help with UX ideas when this starts to materialize

[DEV] Lock Screen - Source/Info Req

So,
Here's the deal:
I am a very capable java programmer, who wants to change some things about his N1. I don't care if the program I create can only be used for people who have root, (and for free).
Currently I have the N1 rooted, and am running Cyanogen's 5.0.5.2
My goal is to change the default lockscreen to include the following:
- SMS/Email display
- Upcoming Appointment
- Music control
All I need is the following:
- Where is the source code for the original located.
- Where is the apk installed that handles the current default lockscreen.
- How do I compile the source into apk so it can replace the default lockscreen.
Btw, you'll probably hear a lot more from me the coming months as I'm bringing a whole team of 'bout 20 programmers to the Android. ;-)
(We're from a university study, specialized in Artificial Intelligence. And our goal is to make (good) games.)
Any help, tips or requests would be really appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

This is a great idea. The thing I'd like to see added to the lock screen most would be the info on the current song playing in the Android music player (Artist, Album, Track title). No more swiping the screen to get into the player - just hit the trackball or power button to activate the screen to see what you are listening to.
Anyway, I wish you success.

[BRAINSTORM] [IDEA] Cyanogenmod Universal Improvements

In an attempt at obfuscation I thought I'd start a thread in hopes of getting some collaboration for improving my favorite Android ROM-- CM6. Sure I could stick with AOSP for better universal support but who cares? CM6 offers what I consider the best experience and the available code far surpasses what we would need to reinvent on a stock base.
Lack of time and knowledge has me realizing it's best to try to bring the community together so we can work on adding features in a hopefully less 'throm' way. Seeing advancements devs can do like MIUI's lockscreen and interesting home screen improvements, features we enjoy from the CM6 nightlies, etc. is the motivation.
I'll post my work and ideas and I'm hoping people do the same.
List of ideas and projects I'd like to get going:
Notification bar scrollable settings
MIUI and the new Sense inspired idea but taken to a new level with custom activity support similar to Bettercut and ADW offer.

Universal Firefox-style Google search from long-pressing text
Long press text in a web page, email, text box and have a context menu to search the phrase on Google similar to Firefox. It's a Google OS, let's add it
Smooth screen rotation transitition
Intercept rotation and instead shift the screen rotation without redrawing to improve speed on low end devices and prevent onResume() potentially wiping current saved state in poorly coded apps
This is a think tank and I hope to spin it into a development thread. I'm open to ideas like a Home button in browser, etc. Let's make this easy, open source and available for integration in ROMs to make things better for everyone.

The one thing I've always wanted fixed in Android (since 1.0) is Artist sorting in the music player. Currently the scanner incorrectly uses the Artist tags for combination albums and splits them all up (should use Album Artist; check how iTunes/WMP sorts this stuff); its terribly annoying and has needed to be fixed for ages.

My 2 Cents
Sense like copy /paste In browser
Getting that search drop down on xda to not dissapear when I try to type in eing
Getting the gmail app to auto call phone numbers when you touch it, sense does this
When searching In google, the suggestions come up, I would like to be able to scroll to one of the suggestions, and this auto fills the search box for you, like it does in a desktop browser
Cm has thought of almost everything I must say though!
Here's an idea i'd like to see. I dunno if it should be implemented in Android in general or CM.
If you pull down the notification bar, swiping left or right to get another page with some of your widgets... OR switch between open applications using that.

Anyway.
AIDE is an integrated development environment (IDE) for developing real Android Apps directly on Android devices. AIDE supports the full edit-compile-run cycle: write code with the feature rich editor offering advanced features like code completion, real-time error checking, refactoring and smart code navigation, and run your App with a single click.
AIDE will turn your Android tablet with keyboard into a real development box. We use the Transformer Prime running Ice Cream Sandwich to code with AIDE. AIDE will turn your Android Phone into a small development computer to browse and touch your code on the go.
AIDE is fully compatible with Eclipse projects. Just copy the sourcecode to your device, open any source file in AIDE to load the project and start coding.

learning java myself! I've been using the cbt nuggets video series, I watch a 30 minute nugget here and there on my prime. Had to convert them to mp4 though because they were in wmv when I downloaded them.
I hope to port a few linux apps to android soon. I've got graphic design experience too so it should help with gui's and object oriented programming.
Pitty that debugging tools aren't available. Besides that, it allows for code refactoring, auto-complete, syntax highlighting and a few neat stuff. Tried importing a few of my projects and even those with dozens of files it managed to work well. Definitively useful when away from pc. Add support for SVN/CVS/GIT and it would be (even more) awesome!
YES!!!
This is awesome!
With a debugger and a version control system integration it will be a full fledged development app.
I think that this is going to be very useful for testing and tweaking apps on the hardware. Do most of the hard coding and debugging on your desktop, transfer the project over to the device and tweak as you test, brilliant!
You can always multi task to a terminal app and run version control through a chroot.
AIDE and the ability to use a real keyboard IMHO, makes Android about as self hosting as we're likely to get for a few more years, short of being able to compile and bake in your ROM from your ROM.
The Android SDK works mostly fine on Android in a chroot with Java, even if you don't do the Xvnc thing...but it relies on an x86 program called aapt -- that AIDE has built for ARM .

Thanks OP. This is great news. Might start messing around with it myself.
I got this the day it came out and it is SO amazing!!! I've never done any coding of anything on android or any thing for that matter, but using this I'm already making an app. It might just be that I thought this was so cool that I actually tried to make one or that it makes it so easy, but either way this app is awesome!!!! Also the developer is using an asus prime and updates frequently(both pluses, especially for us prime owners)

5 Great Unheard Of Google Apps

5 Great Unheard Of Google Apps
You might think you know all about the Google brand apps that are available on the Play store. You might also think that you're Abraham Lincoln struggling to make it in musical theater so you can one day perform on Broadway. The only thing that these two things have in common is that they're both probably wrong.
Believe it or not, sometimes even Google apps don't gain a whole lot of popularity. I went through the Google developer page and found out these great apps here don't have a whole lots of downloads. Some of these apps deserve a little more attention than they receive, so I'd thought I'd share these gems with you.
Primer by Google
Primer is an app that delivers simple lessons to help you learn marketing skills. If there is anyone who is in any position to tell you a thing or two about marketing, it's Google. These lessons will come in handy for anyone trying to push any kind of product or content online. You can expect everything to look amazing as it's all done with material design. Check out these screenshots.

Arts & Culture
This app actually has under 50,000 downloads right now. That's some small time baby stuff by Google's standards. Arts and Culture will let you take 360 tours of hundreds of museums, heritage sites, and landmarks. This is pretty awesome if you're into art and culture, you animal. Next time you plan on going to the museum with your family, just sit around on the sofa instead. Did you know that in Canada they call sofas chesterfields? What a backwards country that is.
Download
Snapseed
The Google Photos app has some nice editing options in there but you probably didn't know about Snapseed. This is a photo editor that goes a little more in depth than your stock editor. Now I can move the giant disgusting moles off of my abnormally large head and not have it look like a hack job.
Download
YouTube Creator Studio
I run a popular youtube channel where I discuss different breast feeding tips and tricks. Because of the large amount of hate comments saying that I'm a man and have no right to talk about this stuff, I have a lot a comments to manage. If you've ever tried to do anything other than watch videos on the Youtube app for Android, you'll quickly learn it's pretty useless. That's why Youtube Creator Studio is a blessing. You can access almost everything in your control panel from your phone. This makes it much easier for me to delete all those comments from the haters, block people from messaging me, and delete videos that I regret.
Download
Device Assist
So your parents just got an Android phone and they have more than a few questions about how to use it. You just can't be bothered with it because you have better things to do. Instead install this app on their phone. You can have it generate tips based on a difficulty level. You can tell them to use the live support option instead of giving up if they get overwhelmed. Definitely a cool and useful app.
Download
Keep an eye out on Google's Play store developer page to see if they try to sneak any other gems in there.

Denna
We are happy to introduce you our to-do list application Denna. Denna is a fully featured and productive to-do list for Windows 10 devices.
We live in a time where speed is everything, and with all that hassle, you can easily forget to get things done. That is when a planning tool such as Denna can come in handy, preventing you from ever missing any important appointments or other tasks.
Customize your plans from the very beginning
As soon as you open the application tool you are prompted with the option of inserting your private credentials, which fortunately does not require any third-party authentification.
The profile itself comes in handy as all tasks, both present or future, are attributed to it. Through the profile, you can see your progress and whether you've managed to become more organized or not.
An application with a minimalist interface
Since the purpose of the application is to help you save time, it doesn't bother distracting you with dazzling colors and confusing menus or buttons.
The whole black theme is a nice addition as it is also easy on the eyes while still being visible even in low light conditions (as we all know, most of our planning takes place during the evening or at night)
Watch as you become more and more organized
Denna keeps records of how much of your plans you've managed to accomplish, in the form of pie charts.
You add the task, Denna reminds you to do it, if you complete it, you just check the appropriate bracket. If you've missed out on a task, the application will remember and add it to your history.
This is an excellent feedback system as it subconsciously pushes you to continuously improve yourself and make you more organized.
More so, plans that have been postponed are stored in a separate area where they will remain visible so that they will never be lost to oblivion.
A simple but effective time management app
Given how time is a precious commodity which can never be recovered, taking care of how we spend it is the best thing we can do. Denna proves itself to be a simple yet efficient application that will always keep track of what you do, and reminds you of the things you haven't done yet.
Guess what? Denna is an opensource FREEWARE!
