TG01 = great Phone? - TG01 General

Hello, I love the HD2 however it is just to expansive for nearly 500 € - I would rather buy another Notebook
An used TG01 with one year warranty costs at ebay only 160 - 190 €!
I think that is a great Price - now my question - would you guys say that the TG01 is (with the new ROMs) a good phone by now? Or are there still problems with the phone in your opinion?
I want to use that phone every day as Mp3-Player (the size doesn't matter to me), Video-Player, Internet Browsing, "Textmaker" (like MS Word) and to use Pleco (chinese learn Program).
(For example what disappointed me is the fact that there is no 3,5mm jack for my Headphone because I would use the Phone as my daily MP3 Player. I have a good blue-tooth stereo-headset with 3,5mm jack but I prefer to listen music without headset or adapter.)

Its getting there, for the prices its possible to buy them for its a bargain.
Yes being able to use custom roms is great and does change the devices prospects and usability, the things the TG01 does not have, radio, compass, multitouch and of coarse, a 3.5mm socket on the phone itself, flash for the camera.

I like my TG01....
I'll be honest, I like my TG01. I have SPB Mobile shell 3.5.3 plus MSkip Pro Elegance loaded, TomTom 7.9, Opera 10 (best ever), MyPlayer, Office Mobile 10 a ton of other programs plus games like Xtrakt2, Experiment 13. and still memory left. What more could I want! Well, a battery that lasts more than 4 hours when you use the phone would be helpful!!! If you want just a phone, buy a basic Nokia!! If you want something to play with, the TG01 ticks most boxes..
Forgot to mention, Bluetooth headphones are a must - I have the motorola's and they are great.

Hi .....
When you get this one cheap - it´s maybe a deal - when you can live with it´s faults. With the custom ROM´s the situation is getting better (at least compared to the german o2-ROM) ...
But it´s still ...
- missing a real 3,5 mm headphone connector
- the camera quality isn´t very good (missing at least a flash)
- the accu drains really fast when you use wireless connections (WiFi, BT or 3G), usually i charge twice a day and I don´t think I use it excessive.
- is a little short on memory (my opinion)
- horrible performance (with the german o2-ROM - my old Elfin was faster. At least sometimes)
It still has it´s good sides (that were the only things I saw when I got it):
- it´s really thin - you can put it in your pocket and forget it
- the display is great (big & good resolution)
- 1 GHz CPU
- ...
I wouldn´t buy this thing a second time, but now I have it, I use it and hope the cooks make this device more useful (at this time I use ffboy´s 6.5.5 ROM with SPB Mobile Shell and it works good).
If you like tweaking get a TG01 ... but I won´t get it a second time. Toshiba missed a chance to make a real good phone. I don´t know if they learned anything for the TG02 or the other new models - but I won´t give them another chance

After 10 month with a TG01 , this is my opinion:
No one say nothing about USB Host.. TG has it , HD2 DON'T. and it's very very useful. You can read USB pen drives and card readers anyway, connect game pads, mouses, keyboards, barcode readers, portable hard disk!....
Before the official Toshiba update to 6.5, this phone had a dangerous problem: SD card corruption. Since them, no problem regarding SD integrity. Very very safe
Now the TG01 is usefull, powerfull, and FAST!! I use it every day for business and leisure and it's awesome.
I have more than one hundred apps and no problem.
Known Cons:
Battery life (but I always carry a fresh battery with me)
No Flash ( not a big problem for me)
SD card placement (you have to remove battery to change the SD card) odd, isn't? but true. As results, most people never extracts SD and they use USB host or internet for file interchange instead
3,5mm headphones (I use bluetooth headphones)
In two words, it's the best device that you can buy under 300€, and now with the new ROMs ( and that's just the beginning) the possibilities are infinite

Agreed there has been a MASSIVE improvement with the roms.
I love the size. Beautiful 4.3" screen. I had to switch to Garmin GPS from TomTom but only because i don't want to deal with using GPS Gate software.
It uses GPD port, instead of a COM port for GPS communications.
Anyway, I'd recommend it as an awesome value. An excellent compromise if you don't want to spend the money and get an HD2.

Thanks for the many replies!
At the moment I am using the HTC x7500 and I think the TG01 could be a good replacement. For the accu problem I am using since 2 years an Just Mobile external battery with 5V 1A output and 4400mAh - it is handy and also charges my bluetooth headset and my "normal" phone very fast. It should be able to charge the TG01 up to 3 times. I'd recommend it to any one.
What is your favorite ROM? Is there by now a german ROM that works well?

As a user of both TG01 and HD2 i can tell you is relay about design, if you like TG01's design you can get a phone just as good as HD2 for a great price.
Maybe i have been lucky with my TG01 but didn't relay have any issues with it, sure sound is a little different then HTC phones but if you don't put speaker to max is fine.
GPS work just fine for me, the trick may be to have as much RAM free as possible or gps signal lost and have to reset (or so i read).
Audio cable HAS a 3.5 jack but you still have to plug it to usb connector and connector is straight not L shape so not very nice in pocket.
HD2 vs TG01
- HD2 4.3" vs TG01 4.1"
- HD2 448(576) MB RAM vs TG01 256MB
- HD2 3.5 at bottom vs TG01 3.5 mm jack on usb cable plugged to left side
- HD2 smaller size
- HD2 5MP camera with focus and 2 led flash vs TG01 3MP low quality and bad soft
- HD2 has compass
- HD2 capacitive glass screen vs TG01 scratch prone resistive
TG01 vs HD2
- Resistive touchscreen, more precise and works with stylus
- USB host to connect gamepad, mouse, keyboard
- support In Call Recording
- slimmer
- lighter
- small(compared to HD2) XDA community but more friendly and willing to help.
TG01's screen is by a small margin brighter and more vivid at max background light but with light sensor on you will never notice it.
HD2 has better software.
TG01's Malaysia original ROM has SPB mobile shell 3 out of the box witch should work with Sence la Révolution V2 theme (yet to test).
In conclusion TG01 is a good phone for the money (actually beast deal) and by price/features it wins. Another close one is Acer Liquid if you digg android or Acer S200 if WiMo is a requirement.
Also you may want to compare TG01's used price with price of a used HD2 not a new one (i payed ~360€ for HD2 and ~220€ for TG01).

TG01 can manage HD video on mpeg 4 and Divx better than any other device tested for me before. It's a pity that it has not TV out (my former one had this feature) I miss this possibility (perhaps the next one?)
By the way the HTC doesn't have TV out neither

now I am confused - what size is our screen? 4.3 or 4.1?

Nice day

Yippee! Just made a good deal on ebay ... at least I think/hope so
Got an 9 month used TG01 + silicon case (ok that one is pretty cheap) + Richter car suction mount + 1300mah extra battery (intern) for 186€ : )
I am happy
Hopefully I can sell it in one or two years still for more than 100€ and buy an used HD2 for same price LOL
If I think about the loss in value from phones above 500€ (recommended retail price) in general - in just one year - I get headaches.
I personally like the HD2 more. I had/have good experiences with HTC and believe they build there phones in better quality than Toshiba, the perceived value is much higher using HTC Phones.
I hope Palm will made an HD2 soon, I tried there new OS/Phone and I love it! It is so quick and native to use, even with low processor ... and task changes are incredible. Just the phone is ... gosh ...

TG01 is 4.1", check the specifications on Toshiba's page.
HD2 is 4.3" and in spite of that is is smaller in size.

Sorry, not trying to hijack, just needed to check up on this:

That's strange, because a few days ago, my TG01 crashed, so I did a hard reset (presume that's a hard reset?) (held down off for 11 seconds anyway) and when it loaded back up, the screen was frozen everytime and there was nothing that I could do. I only managed to get it working again when I removed the SD card (manufactured by Toshiba) so figured the card is now corrupt and I can no longer get access to my data and have to buy a new card. But you say this can happen before the WM 6.5 update? The phone came preinstalled with WM6.5 though so perhaps the problem is Toshiba's cheap SD Card? I don't understand it otherwise.

SD cards are not very persistent. That is why prof. photographers are using CF cards. It can happen that a SD card is corrupt after one day or in 4 years, the chances are higher than with most other memory flash card, but all flash memory cards have that disadvantage. I do not think this is due to TG01 just bad luck.

i'm using novembre5's rom.. i've found them to be great for freeing up ram, and very stable.
And YES, he does have a German ROM (scroll down in first post for link... i thought i should link you to the description, instead of just the link)

I think what you did was actually a soft reset - basically powering off and then on again. To hard reset you either need to use 'Master Clear' in Settings or else Power Off and then hold down the Camera and Vol Up buttons while Powering Up again. Release the Power button when the green LED lights but keep holding the other two. Then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the hard reset.

StarTrek or Tornado - which is the better device?

After some advice. I am slowly getting through the suite of products. Was a proud owner of a Wizard, currently using a Tornado, but am very interested in the StarTrek.
Can anyone offer some advice on the difference between the 2 products and what people recommend. I'm tempted to change to go for the smaller flip style set up as my only problem with PDA Phone devices has always been the size.
Any advice much appreciated.
I personally LOVE the Flip phone
Owning both I do believe the Tornado is the better device, but I think the Qtek 8500 aka HTC StrTrk is way more sexy.
My personal pro's and cons:
- 8500 lighter then the Tornado, it's also thinner so easier to take with you.
- 8500 clamshell design protects the display.
- 8500 keyboard is way easier to use with one hand, Tornado's keys are very small and close to each other, to small and close for one hand use (without dropping the phone).
- 8500 is black.
- 8500 is cheaper.
- 8500 supports A2DP profile, but....
- 8500 has lousy sound quality since it play's soundfiles at the lowest sound quality. The 200Mhz CPU can hardly handle the A2DP profile as it is built in the 8500, that's why the factory setting is set to play at the lowest sound quality. One needs to (security-) unlock the phone to alter registry settings and to make the 8500 play at a higher quality. To get these files to play at a higher quality without clipping, you need to overclock the processor with OmapClock to at least 240Mhz.
So... the Tornado is the better MP3 player. There is a world of difference here!! I'm sure A2DP profile will be available for the Tornado in the next ROM update, untill then you can use the Tornado A2DP patch someone made to get your Bluetooth Stereo Profile. It works better then the built in A2DP profile in the 8500...
- Tornado has WiFi.
- Tornado has much better battery life, there's a difference in day's here.
- Tornado has slightly better sound quality during phone calls.
- Tornado has a standard mini-USB connector for connection to your PC.
- Tornado has a standard 2.5mm jack for your headset.
- Tornado uses Mini-SD (2GB capacity soon 4GB capacity) instead of the 8500's Micro-SD (1GB capacity soon 2GB capacity).
So a few points to consider. I must say I use the 8500 more than the Tornado due to it's lesser weight and more sexy looks. But if you intend to listen to music a lot with your phone, go for the Tornado. WiFi is a strong consideration too. If both points are of no importance to you, you might want to keep some money in your pocket and go for the slim and black (or pink if you want) 8500.
Good luck with deciding
roma!
I totaly agree, you could not put it beter.
I also having 3 devices prefer the 8500 since the clamshel design is really, really handy (even if it only for a reason that you do not need to lock the keys after you use the phone aslip it in the pocket, and then unlock them first before use)
And the 8500 is Sooooooooo Sexy....
I also find it more comfortable to talk to since when you talk with it it forms like a cradle around your fase..
Many thanks Guys for your help....really appreciate it.
Really fancy the startrek. Only concerns now will be whether I can cope with the weaker battery (although I could get a spare), and how the startrek would deal with Tomtom mobile - although I'm still having trouble getting that to work with my Tornado (despite calling my external GPS receiver 'GPS').
Anyway, thanks again...PNA
QTEK 8500 works perfect with TOMTOM Mobile 5 by me. I use it on a daily basis. I did have to get the latest version though form t-mobile site I beleive version 5.20
Also I had to application unlock the phone, which is a simple registry tweak. MAKE SURE you do the reg tweak first before you install TomTom since if you do that after you shall need to activate TT5 again since the device ID changes. Very weird, and I had the problem. It took me two weeks to get throught to TT support what exactly happend.
Same here, no problem with TomTom Mobile 5.20. Also application/security unlocked the phone before installing TTM5. Use is every day. Since yesterday have me a Brodit passive holder with a car charger for the 8500 so battery life is good enough for me. Battery life is shorter then the Tornado but hasn't got me in any trouble so far.
yea, I also can say that with normal use it lasts about two days, although I do turn it off at night. I love the smartphone feature to be able to switch the phone off. Because in my MDA Vario and PRO I have to turn the flight mode on in order to be off line.
If I get the choise it would definitely be the startrek. Very very handy and confortable to use. I have not got a tornado, but always had a phone with the keys in front and hated it always. Now the fact that it is a clamshel design it is great.

Intel introduces new SSD for mobile platforms - possible replacement for Athena HD?

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/pos...uces-tiny-flash-drive-for-mobile-devices.html
If you look at the specs, it will certainly fit. We'll have to wait a little longer before they get it up to at lest 8GB (max size eventually will be 16GB, currently it will only come in 2GB and 4GB sizes). PATA interface (SATA in the future), so an interface between it and the Athena will be necessary.
that looks like a go, now it is not a question of will it fit but rather how do we get it and hook it up
Yup. I forget the type of connection that the Athena has, can someone confirm? Then we just need to find a converter that will fit in the rest of the open space left by the old HD.

PATA ZIF
IIRC
It will be fantastic if anyone can swap the hard disk. It should shed some weight and improve battery life.

I am not sure, but I have read somewere, that vueflo sensor is ither in the interface or in the micro drive. It actualy has to roles.
1 - tries to prevent the drive to crash while Athena fells down.
2 - sends signals to vueflo app.
I am not sure if this is true, but if... then we have a problem.
Wouldnt be a problem for me, I dont use viewflo. It feels like a marketing gimmick not quite ready for production. Maybe others have better results.
Huh, so we may have a direct pata to pata connection... another piece that fits. Pun intended. Maybe that would leave room for a vibrate feature, something the Athena could use!
Myson is fascinated with Vueflo, but I don't like it at all, and have always regarded it as a nuisance.

if used properly when only need to scroll and turned off when not i actually love it. great to show off the iphone isnt only phone with all those fancy sensors and stuff. the athena project is trying to make that orientation app that uses vueflo to roate screen so it might be nice to hold onto it. once that app is done we will have more info on vueflo and might be able to use it for other things.
I'm neutral on Vueflo. I always disable it when I use Opera on rare occasions. Just don't let it gets in the way when considering using SSD from Intel.
I would like to see the motion sensors used to launch apps/macros (shake left twice to launch PocketStella, down twice for wmWifiRouter, down 3 times for screen brightness...), but loosing that functionality to gain a larger SSD would be a no-brainer.
Especially if we could then fit in a vibrate motor. As for controlling vibrate, maybe the unused viewflow lines would be useful, unless there is another controllable output somewhere. Find a pin with direct battery access to drive the motor through a relay, then control the relay with the viewflo lines (assuming one of them is an output) or another control line. Then build a driver that would monitor if the phone was ringing and trigger the vibrate. I know, far-away dreams...
So the big question is, with the new X7510 16Gb flash drive, who makes THAT unit?
The X7510 still has vueflo, so perhaps the flash drive does as well.

Parrot Asteroid with I777 & CM9

I've installed a Parrot Asteroid (digital media head unit with hands free calling) in my wife's VW Passat and think it might be one of the best purchases I've made this year. Install on the Passat (2001.5) was almost plug and play. The only change I had to make was switching Battery and ACC on harness. The antenna adapter (unpowered) is a standard item and was available from a local source.
With CM9 (nightly 0508 currently) USB and Bluetooth tethering work.
Contacts are shared with the Asteroid and voice dialing is accurate (the Parrot seems to grok what I am saying).
Music selection (media on SDHC card in Parrot) via voice is failrly accurate but I have noticed a few inaccurate responses.
Hands-free calling is crystal clear and the music quality is awesome.
Some have reported buggy or defective units, but I have had no trouble with it over the last week with my I777. We'll see what happens with my wife's iPhone...
I am considering same setup into my 2004 Passat. Thanks for posting the picture, that certainly clears my concerns about how does it look in the car as the console is same as yours.
How is sound compared to original VW radio you had before?
Do you mind if I ask you to share with us what components went into your install beside of course the Asteroid? Especially what adapter for the wiring harness you used.
I am using (primarily) Galaxy Nexus on CM9, so I'm pretty confident hooking the Asteroid to the phone shouldn't be a problem. Thanks in advance!
Edit: forgot to ask about button backlight - from what I see on the Internet it seems to be white, is it adjustable so it can be made to match the OEM backlight on the Passat (red)?

In my opinion (these things being subjective), the sound is excellent. Like most Android devices, the Asteroid has a built in equalizer and other sound tweaks. Much better than stock.

I believe all B5.5 Passats use a ISO connector for the stock stereo. The included Parrot wiring harness adapter works out of the box. I only had to flip Battery and Switched Power (ACC). The Parrot adapter is designed to allow quick changes to these leads and this is documented in the included instructions. The only thing I had to buy was the antenna adapter. I picked that up for about $15 US. I used the unpowered version.

CM9 works quite nicely with the Parrot with one caveat. Bluetooth audio was great (both music and hands free calling). No problems with pairing so far. I tried connecting my SGS2 USB storage to the Parrot but it is not recognizing the SGS2 mass storage (micro SD card). This is not a show stopper for me as I have a 32GB SDHC card installed in the Asteroid.
Edit: forgot to ask about button backlight - from what I see on the Internet it seems to be white, is it adjustable so it can be made to match the OEM backlight on the Passat (red)?

No such luck from what I have seen. You have have a choice of white, white, or white. You can adjust the intensity of control backlight and LCD backlight for 'Day' and 'Night' modes. 'Day' and 'Night' modes are toggled by a long press on the 'Parrot' button.
The Asteroid is not perfect but it seems to be the only device of its kind at the moment. I am surprised that more car stereo companies are not leveraging Android into their equipment lineup. Both OEM and aftermarket vendors seem to be utterly clueless when it comes to emerging technologies. Who uses CD (or for that matter DVD's) anymore?
When we bought our Passat I was shocked and appalled that the head unit had a CASSETTE deck! There was a CD changer in the trunk but that meant pulling over to change CD's. Clueless, utterly clueless...
In any case, good luck. The install is pretty easy. Do some research on some of the issues some seem to experience with the Asteroid. I have not seen any major problems on firmware 1.5 as yet but your mileage may vary.
*Edit: One other thing -- the Asteroid does not fit flush with the dash like the stock head unit. It sticks out approximately 1/4 inch. Aside from doing major work to modify the dash, I could not think of any way to make the Parrot fit flush. It does not bother me, but it may pose aesthetic issues for you. I actually have grown to like it. It makes finding controls easy without taking my eyes off the road.
Oh -- and one last thing. This 38 second video is priceless for removing the stock head unit.
http://youtu.be/KNSYBSGzUuQ
One last edit -- here is the antenna adapter. $7 through Amazon.

Thanks a bunch!! So your 2001.5 came with the singe DIN unit. B5.5's 2002 onward ship with double DIN unit, so I would need to find a tray to place in (and fill up the gap) which will be very handy as I could keep the phone (or other junk in there. I've heard Parrot is coming up with a double din unit with slightly extended functionality: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/08/parrot-asteroid-ck-asteroid-nav-asteroid-2din-infotainment-sys/. They mention late 2012 availability, wondering if I want to hold my horses for that one. Since it doesn't have physical buttons to require backlight, there won't be an issue with the look, but I like the buttons and especially the rotary ones, so this (for me) is as disadvantage as much as advantage. And probably the cost will double. Though integrated Google maps navigation would be terrific! Decisions, decisions...!
Yeah. The stock unit was single DIN. I believe you can buy the pocket if you have a double DIN OEM head unit and want to install a single DIN.
I like having physical controls -- perhaps I am getting old. The lack of apps does not particularly distress me.
I'd like to use the Parrot UNIKA steering controls interface but it does not look like B5.5 Passat is supported yet.
By the way, I'm listening to one of your (Canadian) exports today -- a band by the name of Elliott Brood from Toronto. Not bad for Canadian hacks. ;-)

V521 uses

My V521 has been sitting around for almost a year. Lately I've been thinking of resurrecting it for some use. I have two ideas.
1. Mount in kitchen to use as a reference for recipes and Google assistant (voice recognition) to ask it to to convert units (ie oz to g)
or
2. I have two wyzecams stream rstp video. I could devote the tablet to constantly show the streams.
I think #1 should be fine. As for #2, I'm not sure it will be fast enough to stream video, even though it is pretty low bitrate, frame rate.
Anyone use it for either purpose?
i use a V521 for my SHIELD TV's ( have two 500gb versions ) they are great to transfer files wirelessly as they have a USB PORT, plus the IR blaster is a lifesaver when the kids lose the tv remote.
i also carry one in my car, as i can download or upload new music to my USB drive and plug it back into the car at will .
its not a powerhouse or such, but having the full sized USB port has helped me other times as well,
the internet leads me to believe , that its possible to upgrade the GPU driver, but i haven't had success yet.
there is an old MAGISK module , NITRO?> i think? that helps quite a bit with video playback, but its far from perfect.
if you keep your V521 in a case, its easy to swap out the stock battery for a massive one. only drawback, is the case becomes permeant, as the larger battery needs the rear cover trimmed. ( i use a leather type, and it is not noticeable. ( it cant be removed from this case either,, but that does not bother me. )
its also simple to fix the speaker, so the audio becomes front facing .
i have a bunch of these tablets, ( they can be picked up for 20-30 bucks, with easy to fix issues ) and sure its not new , or speedy,, it still has much use left. i know development has long ended , but like a classic car, it still brings a smile for its use. RIP LG....

How many others still using their G5 as a daily driver

How many others still using their G5 as a daily driver?
I am since 2016 (h850) and using the latest available Lineage 18.1 (Android 11)
Using Proshot & open camera apps, although the camera quality is far behind whats available now but it still works and get decent images.
My GPS hasn't worled for a long time.
My vibration motor doesn't work, but thats ok.
The touch sensor doesnt work, I think thats because of LOS.
I'm using a modded samsung battery
I'm on my second display (replacement is an original LG part)
LOS is laggy sometimes, especially when turning on Wifi after a while then all apps seem to want to download their data, the phone becomes unresponsive.
Takes a minute to be stable. Other than that, cba and can't afford a new phone so still using as a daily driver.
Any better camera apps or further recommended tweaks?
Hi i want use my LG G5 h850 but i have miss the date to unlock it.
so i cant use it while the bootloader ist lockt and the LG System is over and i lost my unlock key
I'm still using my LG G5 H830. I have LineageOS on it which does not support VoLTE, now required for use on T-Mobile;s network.
I bought a new H830 (v7.0.0) off eBay and my plan this week is to root it, install recovery, upgrade to stock v8.0 Android then migrate everything to this phone.
@davestuarts , I recommend you buy a new H850 off eBay and migrate everything like I'm doing.

Hi,
I gave up some months ago using the G5 as the chin started to randomly fail and not let me charge the phone. While I was using it I replaced two batteries, repaired multiple times the fingerprint sensor connectors on the motherboard and replaced the camera glass. Vibration motor started to fail too (squeaking instead of vibrating, I think I killed it playing Hooked On: COTD on the EKA2L1 emulator), and of course GPS was, and always had been, just barely working.
Despite all this, it was a great phone, especially shooting photos in RAW format: if you want to spend a minute or two to improve the photos you take, Adobe Lightroom for Android is the best software to make any decent picture taken with the G5 look as good as if it was shot on an iPhone.
In my opinion, by the way, the stock LG camera app is better than the other third party cameras, with only Google Camera being better in some occasions, albeit a bit buggy on the G5: on Celso Azevedo's website you can find all the modded Google Camera versions, with precompiled settings for the G5 too.
The last month I used it I switched from the stock Oreo ROM to a LineageOS-based one (DotOS, if I recall correctly), and it became surprisingly faster, even tough that meant sacrificing the FM radio and the IR remote.
Now I'm considering to buy an HDMI adapter and use the G5 as an Android tv box, if the chin proves to be reliable enough to keep the phone charged while it is sitting behind the TV.

Hey, thanks for your input, very thorough, appreciate it. I'm pretty much in the same camp as you, although mine does charge though it's chin is a bit loose. I've got a back case on, which is tight and helps keep the phone together, kind of a cheat method.
I'm only using as I cannot currently afford to buy something new, and want something with a decent camera but with LOS support too or rootable. I have been looking at some used Pixel phones, but its about price.
Anyway, I was happy with proshot app, as I like photograpy and it gives great manual control and decent pics but seeing how newer phones are so much better, I have recently gone back to trying gcam (previously it would crash often), which you mentioned.
Playing around with v8.6 and it works suprisingly well and produces some really great photos better than proshot, although slow at times, especially the processing time.
v.8.7 worked but even slower with some features kept crashing it.
I'll have a go at lightroom, never thought about it before. Thanks.
Incidentally, what phone you got next? Also, great idea to repurpose G5 as android TV.
Have you got that running and if so, what rom is usable, especially to have HDMI out and does charging work at the same time?
After the G5 I got an Asus Zenfone 8: small, powerful processor, OLED screen, 3.5mm audio port and easily rootable. It's not a cheap phone, but I was lucky enough to find one used for 390€ (spending more than 400€ for a phone is unreasonable for what I use it for).
To repurpose the G5 as a media center, I will go back to the stock Oreo ROM, as DotOs (and I suppose all the LineageOs-based ROMs) doesn't support the HDMI out.
I've bought a Choetech xch-m180 4K Usb-C HDMI adapter, that "should" (I'll believe when I see it, but I've seen videos of it working as expected) be capable of 4K output and battery charging. I already have a USB-C to HDMI adapter, but without battery charging, and the phone lasts less than one hour, so permanent installation is impossible with that one.
Then I'll install a media center like Kodi (if it can be controlled using another phone via Bluetooth or WiFi) and Tasker to shut down the phone's screen without locking it.
The hardest part of the setup will probably be dealing with the restrictions that each app imposes on phones with root or HDMI output.

Thanks for the update. That Zenfone seems great value for what it has, especially with an OLED and 3.5mm, which I need, you've got it at a great price. In the Uk it's much more £600/€680 and very hard to find it used/refurbished, I can get a Sony Xperia IV for less, refurbushed and 12 months warranty but still too much for me.
Thanks for the other info too. I'll be interested to know how your G5 android project works out.
@tremalnaik Well, I bit took the plunge and found a good deal on a Xperia 5IV.
Brings back memories of my xperia Z3 compact, which I still have, used as a shared media/internet with lineage 18.1.
This new Xperia 5IV wioth its long slab design is so different but very usable.
Superb cameras, especially with their camera styled apps.
I can even use Gcam for better night shots.
Plus the needed 3.5mm jack AND Sdcard slot.
Hopefully, in a few years lineage will be available on, but unlikely to be a popular device due to cost though a great device for them to port one over with all it's extras.
Now, need to repurpose the G5, after I've transfered everyhig over and my phonbe cover arrives. I dont know why companies make such expensive/slipper styled backs, as so mnay people put on covers. Or just make the back more durable.

I wish I found a good deal for an Xperia phone as well: it was my first choice, but any Sony device is really expensive here in Italy.
3.5mm jack is a must for me too, especially when it's the only way to listen music on a 14 years old car.
I wouldn't put much hope on Lineage for future upgrades though: while the developers take an honourable effort in keeping old phones up to date, most of the times any extra hardware feature of the phone will be hard to implement. If you take the G5 as an example, in 7 years nobody found a way to make the IR blaster or the FM radio to work, and neither VoLTE, HDMI, etc. due to the lack of documentation on how these functions are integrated in Android.
Going back to your previous post, I finally received the HDMI adapter and it works like a charm. Here's what I had to do to make it work:
-Connect the adapter to the tv, to the phone, and to a suitable USB plug (for some reason if I connected the USB power plug to the USB port on the tv, the adapter glitched, so I had to connect it to the router's USB port)
-Change the DPI settings to make the phone think it's running on a large screen
-Dowload a tv launcher: I found Simple TV Launcher to be simple and reliable
-Download TV version of the apps you need: Aurora Store has a convenient spoofing feature so I chose to make the phone appear like it's a Sony Bravia TV to download TV apps
-Download an app to control the phone usimg another phone as a remote. "Bluetooth keyboard & mouse" would be the best, if only Bluetooth wasn't a totally unreliable technology (out of three phones I tried to use as remotes, 2 had terrible lags, and another one wasn't able to connect at all). So my next choice was Zank Remote: not as good for non-tv apps, but as it works through wi-fi, it actually works. It can even be used like a rudimental wiimote to point at the screen.
-as I don't want to see ads on Youtube and I'm too lazy to try to compile ReVanced Youtube, I went for NewPipe: it's definitely not optimised to work on TVs, but it works.
So far I've only tested it with RaiPlay (national TV's online platform) and it works really well. My phone is rooted and I don't have any other movie platform subscription, so I don't know if this setup could work with Amazon Prime or Netflix. By the way I could test it with AceStream (the primary reason I wanted to make this setup, so I don't have to turn on the pc and stream from VLC to the Blu-Ray player connected to my not-so-smart TV), and it works flawlessly.
The hardest part of the whole setup is to shut down the backlight of the G5's screen while HDMI is connected: I had to use a shell script and automate it with Tasker. Still I haven't found a way to stop the HDMI out if the phone is locked, to save energy: if I lock the phone, the adapter will actively output a black screen to the TV, so it's likely wasting energy for nothing.

Sorry, thought I had replied to your last message. Yeah, got lucky with the Sony, they're expensive in UK too. Last few years with the corrupt goverment and brexit has caused all prices to jump, only rich or corrupt exist easily.
You're right about Lineage or other custom rom being available for the Sony, as you said, they never figured out the IR blaster for the G5, theres always hope tho ha.
I've been trying to use the G5 as a android box but my issue is the battery drain. Its the old battery and the HDMI dongle with the charging port cannot sustain the battery with screen on, so it dies and also it gets quite hot.
I've been looking at apps or scripts to turn off screen while using, but cannot find anything yet. Theres an app on my Sony phone thats for gaming, it allows the charger to be plugged in, but not charge the battery instead it simply powers the phone, so it dont get hot and you can game for longer. I need an app like that.
My other option now is to take appart the phone, connect a third party battery which is big, like 5000mah and just leave phone open. I could also attach a heatsink or something to the phone internals to help with heat. I'm not bothered with leaving phone open.
