Https in PdaNet Free Edition - Droid Eris General

Not sure if anything has been posted on this yet, sorry if it has, but for all the non-root ppl who want full tethering, there is a pretty easy workaround, I wouldn't even call it a hack.
1. Once pdanet (free edition) has been started and you are tethered, go to the application on your computer and click on "Register Pdanet"
2. Then click "Buy" (don't enter any info, you're not actually buying anything)
3. Once the next page loads, click "I Agree"
This takes you to an https page meant for buying the application.
Don't buy it, unless you really want to haha. Now every https site will load through pdanet.
Just thought I'd share this.

I wonder if that is a way to reset your trial period and if you would have to go through the same process every 30 days or whatever. I am sure that it would be found out and fixed but interesting to know. I have already purchased pdanet and it works ok. I still get slow periods and random disconnects but overall it is the best fix for not being able to use vz mobile connect with access manager. It is also the recommendation from Verizon for android phones. I have talked to tech on 611 about it and it is no longer looked down upon(search for prior horror stories concerning huge bills) as long as you have the corporate unlimited with tethering option in your plan.... I was pointed to pdanet on the android market after complaining about still not getting the vzaccess feature even though I was told that it would come in future software updates (I prefer the connectivity of vzacces over pdanet). BTW, the incredible, for those of us drooling over it, is considered to not work with vzaccess manager even though it states as configure-able on the site with the mobile broadband connect plan per tech support.

EasyTether lite works way better than pdanet ever did for me.

Seems to me this is a pretty crappy thing to do seeing as someone has put in a lot of hard work on building this app. If you don't want to pay for it use the free version. If you need to https version then pony up the money and pay the dev for the app.

Nope. Not yet.
I don't see why it matters to anyone why someone wants this.
I want this too. I don't have to explain to anyone as to why I want it. Because, it is absolutely none of your business. If you don't know how to implement it, then don't post.
Lol. This is a public forum. Of course you don't have to explain why you want something. Equally, if someone who could help doesn't want to, because they suspect you're up to no good, they don't have to justify their actions either, let alone help you. Blessed be.

Touché. I'll admit it. The main reason I want this is to mess with my friends. Nothing actually detrimental. Same reason I like sms bombers, and caller id fakers.
But still, this would be great to add on to my list
This would be so awesome..just from a security standpoint to be able to show and explain to friends and family to not there guards down when it comes to cyber theft and to turn off your radios when not in use
I never quite understand answers like this. This forum is for the exchange of information, not personal opinions. People that think their some kind of 'ethics police' need not be on this type of site. This site is for the exploration, hacking and development of our phones. Rooting & custom firmware is frowned upon by security researchers and manufacturers alike, but because your into it, it's morally correct?

Yep, one man's "not needed" is another man's necessity. This is no less needed than say someone thinking they need a ps3 controller (or wiimote) working with their phone, but no one really complains about that.
here's a very legitimate reason for you so if you know how PM me
Hi,
A friend of mine has an older mobile with a broken touchscreen - the phone no longer has a SIM or a RAM card and is in "Music Sync" mode when it connects to a PC via USB.
They are currently in a court case and need to get their old SMS's off the broken phone - all the "forensic" mobile software out there (from $500 up to $5000!!!) require that the phone is in PC-Suite (or PC-Sync) mode. This can't be changed on the phone as the touchscreen doesn't work.
The only way to get to the SMS's is by Bluesnarfing, so if you know of a PC program or a WinMo 6.5 program that will let me access their phone PM me.
Thanks.
Why is there always that one person that offers no assistance, takes up bandwidth questioning your motives...
For those that don't know:
"Bluesnarfing is the theft of information from a wireless device through a Bluetooth connection, often between phones, desktops, laptops, and PDAs. This allows access to a calendar, contact list, emails and text messages. Bluesnarfing is much more serious in relation to Bluejacking, although both exploit others’ Bluetooth connections without their knowledge. Any device with its Bluetooth connection turned on and set to “discoverable” (able to be found by other Bluetooth devices in range) can be attacked. By turning off this feature you can be protected from the possibility of being Bluesnarfed. Since it is an invasion of privacy, Bluesnarfing is illegal in many countries."

Tethering after VZW pulls t#e plug?

I have skimmed thru quite a few recent posts regarding tethering and I find none of them useful in answering my question. I see that many of the posts go on to get a smartass remark or two from someone who has not a clue about how to answer the question.
Kinda like what happened in this post.
So I would like a linky or a better answer.
Ohhhh, if you want a smartass answer, I could do far better....
That was only my polite, "look around the knowledge base because it's useful" answer that noobs seem to find insulting anyways.
If I really wanted to be insulting, I would tell you to RTFM . I help plenty of people with legitimate questions, feel free to look at my post history and see for yourself.
But really, I do agree the ways people say it tend to be rather blunt.
However, the overreactions to even sensible replies to search around are also just also just as bad, since there doesn't need to be a new posting always and some people just don't think before they make one and reminding them to do a little search I think helps (if done in a not so overly rude way). My initial post was not a slight against you but a word of advice that people will do what you just said, insult you and give you non-helpful replies.
IDK what kind of solution you are looking for, but there isn't a magical "Verizon will give you free unlimited tethering legitimately without extra cost option if you ask them really nicely" or a "I'll come right over to your house code and compile the most amazing tether app in the world that actually boosts your LTE speed beyond what Verizon gives you and does your homework when it's idle."
Instead of taking the defensive because someone asked if you looked around a little, perhaps clarifying your question in a way that shows that you actually searched (i.e. "I noticed there was this method to tether or that, but I don't really like those options") makes it clear to everyone you gave it an honest shot and also motivates people to want to help you more
It also keeps things on topic so you get the answer you want faster. Just for future reference.
I searched the TB forums and didn't really see anything on the subject. I only found
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1082585
Maybe there's more in the general Android forums, though I didn't find much there either. I could just suck at searching.

I recommend using advanced search and "search by post" not by title. You'll get more relevant info that way. If you happen to be an opera mobile or desktop user, you can make a custom search from http://forum.xda-developers.com/search.php?f=940, by hold pressing on the search bar for that page for mobile or right clicking for the desktop. It will then add it to your other custom searches for easy access

No, because it's a different phone that was never fully rooted and it's the only phone mentioned, but it's worth talking about since it's the first threat that comes off as more than words (though it could still be regardless). Verizon can tell what you're doing far easier on it than other phones because you don't ever have full control of it on the droidx. If there's any phone that can detect if you're doing unauthorized tethering, it's going to be a phone that's locked down. People who buy moto get what they pay for.
Though someone did mention it somewhere in some topic on the thunderbolt forums about the droidx having ways to detect it, but it was just glossed over.
I never used stock hotspot app because I never even try apps with monthly charges. what's the point of checking it out and potentially getting hooked when I'm absolutely certain that I will NOT pay monthly charge for that. I'd rather switch back to T-mobile
with that said, I'm using wifi tether as I write this. it took me a while to configure it because it wouldn't work out of box but it's free and well worth the price!
I've been busy lately and havent kept up with this...so Verizon shut down the free tethering apps, like "wifi tether for root" and others?
Not to throw this thread off topic or anything I just wanted to know how you got the H and # key's confused in the thread title as they are quite far apart. Again, sorry to everyone just kind of a weird mistake.

Seems the Thunderbolt running gingerbread is the same way, although I reverted back to froyo for the time being so I cannot confirm what this article states.

Doesn't CM7 provide an integrated tethering solution? That should be undetectable to Verizon.
If they are baking something into the gingerbread update to detect tethering apps (pun not intended but welcome), it won't find its way into the CM7 code.

I doubt anyone on a T-bolt can confirm since we're still getting free hotspot. Unless they are allowing official hotspot use but blocking tethering apps.
I suppose that would make sense if they're trying to get people hooked on the feature.
Yareally thanks for the links. I don't know if you own a xoom but I have yet been able to get the search feature to work in the xda site. Maybe you could find a link for that as well and post it for me.
I am not currently at home with access to my laptop where I have full availability to use the advanced search feature. So thanks again for making these links available in ones easy to find location.
As for the #.. I use thumb keyboard on t#e xoom and it is t#e result of a long press on t#e h key. I think you should be proud if yourself for being able to figure out what I meant to type.
No offence to anyone but some times when you all jump on people asses there may be extenuating circumstances.
Sry for your troubles. But I hope you rest good at night knowing that you have helped one soul find some good info.
The search feature using a web browser or using the application for xda? I've heard the application has lots of issues for anyone period with the search and since many seem to use it, it's probably the reason for lots of duplicate posts. If you mean browsing it on an internet browser, that seems new to me as far as I know.
I've never used it, I just browse using opera mobile (with a link to the thunderbolt forum on my speed dial and the search tied into the search bar next to the url bar).
Opera mobile still has an unresolved issue with LTE being throttled (max of like 150KB/s), but it's not a deal breaker for me at least compared to using the stock browser in terms of getting to where I want to go quickly and its tie-ins to the desktop browser.
No worries about the thread. Internet makes it hard at times to interpret someone's replies anyways since words can be taken many ways, lol.

[Q] Is the radar and windows phone for me? First smartphone

Believe it or not, this is my first smartphone due to the fact I am on a family plan and got free service and didn't want to have my own phone bill. I was given the radar as a gift, but I'm not sure it's for me. I have read a little about the windows phone OS, and it does look promising and I like the phone and features.
The problem is that I don't have a lot to spend on apps. I know there are lots of good free apps for android, but I hear this is a growing platform.
Is this a good phone for my first smartphone? I pick up tech very quickly, I just dumped most of my cash into a new pc build for xmas, so I will be pretty broke. I also hear you can't "jailbreak" (or equivalent) windows phone yet.
I'm sure if I got an android I would try the android equivalent (a ROM I suppose). Is that what I need to do to get apps and games on a non-existent budget? It will cost me 50$ for restocking fee, so if windows phone is worth sticking with, I would love to hear any opinions why and how I can get the apps I need (don't need specifics, just know that it can be done easily).
Thanks in advance, I am reading up on windows phone and android, I just would like advice about my particular situation.

It sounds like you're asking fir help in obtaining paid apps for free, which XDA has strict rules prohibiting any discussion, or help in this area. Having said that, most paid apps on Android market have free versions with ads. I'm not a huge fan of Windows phones, but it wouldn't hurt to play around with it for a few days to see if you like it. Because you have no experience with smartphones, the only way you will be able to compare it would be to check out an Android device at a store, or go on youtube and watch a few in depth reviews on other Android devices.

Thanks for the reply. I wasn't looking for anyone to tell me where I could get free paid apps, it's more about the freedom to unlock the phone, etc. Free apps would be good too, I just didn't know if windows phone was more pay oriented than android. Didn't mean to break any rules, sorry if it came off like that.I see a bunch of stuff about jailbreaking and roms, so I guess it is a fine line.
I guess what I want to ask is how difficult it is to "unlock" these phones compared to android. I see a post that says this phone doesn't have that option yet, but that is something I would definitely look into, as I love freedom with anything I own. It's more to get rid of DRM and things of that nature than it is to "pirate" anything.
I will give this one a shot, but if it's more pay oriented and "locked down" feeling, android might be better for me.

There is a Chevron Unlock method for Mango. But I would suggest holding off on unlocking it, but for the fact you might return it. As for the paid/free app ratio on windows phone, tge best thing to do is browse that market and see what's out there. Windows phone is definitely cool looking, and has ut's good features, just not good enough to convince me to ditch Android. Albeit I don't know you, I think it's safe to assume you'd prefer Android over Windows phone. Android (imho), is the best thing to happen to cell phones. It has the largest MOD following of any platform, and a ton of fun to use. XDA actually started off as a windows phone forum, but qiickly grew to support Android as well. Android is the future of cell phones. Do I sound like a fanboy or what?
Sent from my Sexynos SGH-i777 using XDA Premium.
Yeah, I had my eye on android for awhile, I only held out because of the convenience of getting free service and the cost held me back, but it looks I can finally move forward. I do like this phone, and would like to keep it, but if I will get a better long term experience with android, it might be a wise choice to pay the fee and go with that.
But I am still open to any suggestions anyone may have about windows phone, or why I may prefer this platform.
I had an hd2 with android then WP on personally prefer the UI of Wp, but at the mo there is more out there for Android personally I think most apps are gimmicky and the office and SkyDrive integration is worth going with WP alone....
If you want a lot of apps go android, if you want a nice phone/text/camera UI experience stick with the radar
Buy what you can afford. There are a lot of free apps and many have free trials that are simply ad supported. What you'll have to pay for is xbox live games but you wouldnt go to an xbox forum and post about getting free games would you?
Another thing, if you just got the radar chances are you qualify for the free $25 app card. I got mines in the mail
https://windowsphone.promo.eprize.com/redemptionprogram/:b=ie9/
Other than that the Radar is a fabulous phone and I love it!
Thanks man, I did qualify for that! That should help.
Another question about this phone is the navigation. There is an app that wants 10$ a month, and that's a little high.. There's a "local scout" that gives directions in a non turn-by-turn fashion, and that would be fine for me. Is there a way to input an address to this app? It only has a few limited locations. Or do I have to pay 10$ a month or no navigation? Anyone know a reasonably priced alternative to this?

Can our phones get hacked by random people?

Ok so I have a 3D on my line which belongs to my sister. Well she works at the mall and some Indian guy that used to work for Sprint is telling her he hacks into her phone all the time and uses her internet and that if he wanted to he can access her photos too. So is this possible or is he just bs'in to spark coversations with her? I'm about ready to go over to her job and confront him. I find that sort of behavior creepy and intolerable! Any1 has any idea??

idk man, you need to do some dental work.
I don't know if a "random" person could hack a phone. But:
1. Is the phone rooted? That would give a person more ability to do something bad.
2. There are "spy" software out there. But the guy would have had to have a few minutes alone with the phone.
3. Maybe install malware through an E-mail or text message.
But to use her phone for Internet access sounds pretty weak. Easier and better methods of doing that at a mall where public WIFI is all around.
Bottom line, if you are actually concerned, just have your sister do a factory restore, that wipes everything and then reinstall her apps one at a time validating all are suppose to be on her phone.

this thread is exactly the kind Papa Smurf posted about...basic networking rules...the ONLY way he can intercept her wireless internet signal is if she is connected to the malls wifi... thing is i personally have programs that will allow me to spoof ANY gateway that i am connected to and collect cookies, not to mention use them. i have a program that if i connect to a server that she is connected to i can kill her internet signal... i have one also to where i can connect into her phone or computer.. bottom line... if its wireless and a public server...it becomes public info... so if she stays off the malls wifi and uses just her providers internet connection then she will be fine...unless he clones her phone which he would have to steal first .... now.. prompoting violence is childish ...its not what the forum is for...if anything reprt the guy to the police and give him a record that will ride with him...

If that Indian guy (not me ) is using android phone or PC, he surely is using apps like FaceNiff, Cain & Abel, ANTI, ettercap, DroidSheep, NetCut etc....
So this app should help but it will not work to its full potential as your Sisters phone is not rooted.
Or you can tell her to disable internet or wifi on her phone.
P.S You said the guy used to work for Sprint, Is your Sis using a Sprint Phone?
Is her phone CIQ free?
wloftus had it down.
The only other thing I can think of is he has get password to a security app that can backup pictures and whatnot.
Bottom line is this sounds like a classic harassment case. Get him to text her about this for evidence, go to the police, he gets arrested and the girl is protected by a no contact order. Pretty simple.

this thread is exactly the kind Papa Smurf posted about...basic networking rules...the ONLY way he can intercept her wireless internet signal is if she is connected to the malls wifi... thing is i personally have programs that will allow me to spoof ANY gateway that i am connected to and collect cookies, not to mention use them. i have a program that if i connect to a server that she is connected to i can kill her internet signal... i have one also to where i can connect into her phone or computer.. bottom line... if its wireless and a public server...it becomes public info... so if she stays off the malls wifi and uses just her providers internet connection then she will be fine...unless he clones her phone which he would have to steal first .... now.. prompoting violence is childish ...its not what the forum is for...if anything reprt the guy to the police and give him a record that will ride with him...

I've hope it's obvious that I was joking about the violence as I do think the police should get involved if this guy is harassing her. The implication from the op is that this guy is doing this from a distance so the wifi hot spot does not seem to be the way he is doing it. Since he worked for sprint, he could be using a back door of some sort.

1. No
2. I know about the spy software stuff. I don't know if the guy ever had access to the phone. She did say she bought a case from him b4 and i wouldn't put it past her to put it on a strangers hands in her times of frustration. She's always having problems and going to someone for help.
3. Probably
And yea I guess I'll tell her to do a hard reset. Thanks!

its not possible - andvwhen he works for sprint, you should go to his boss.
when he touched her mobile phone, you can go to court (when you want to)
has she enebled usb-debugging/adb access? disable it.
check all installed user apps if there is dome suspicious with ****loaads of permissions (camera, file access, microphone, etc)
lol enough to kick this guy in the ass with your rights

If you want it free, the developer posted a free version for XDA users here ----> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1350941

She doesn't connect to public wifi shes on sprints network so i doubt that app would help. I just had her do a hard reset on it. Hopefully that helps idk.. And yes its a Sprint phone Evo 3D completely stock on the latest software htc released.

He no longer works for them he used to.
Well if anything I'm just tryna get his whole name because the Sprint rep last night wanted to flag him and start a case. So far only know first name so I have to wait till I go again this week.
I doubt she would enable usb debugging she's not that kind of girl to know what that is. All she do is calls, text, fb, and some web browsing at the most..

Do any of you know anything about software at all? there is only one way to get into the phone and that is through the bluetooth. Other than that, very unlikely someone IN A MALL COULD DO THAT! there are hundreds of phones. plus, one threat like that to start off is subject to be terminated from any position he is in. HE likely got fired from sprint because he acts like he can do things he has no idea about.
However, 99.9% chance there is NO WAY the stupid small penis indian man can get into her phone. but one fact is that his face needs punched more than a few times... just make sure no one rats you out. make sure there is no one that sees you smash his face in. If the Indian doesn't learn a lesson now he'll just keep playing this game with everyone he walks into. He needs to learn one way or another.
Oh, I'm being nice too. If we were in any other country. he'd just have a bullet through his head.
However, I shouldn't even have said anything about the bluetooth part... but everyone needs to understand.. this is a topic we shouldn't even talk about. the reason is that kids that have no lives will use this information to attempt to find ways to spy on their gf's and stuff because they are low life fools.
anyway, to end this off.. I do thank everyone in here for being valued members of this forum... Remember do things responsibly. Anyone caught in here violating any law or creeping on others should be banned without question and legally should be held responsible for their actions.
to finish it completely off. the indian guy is a creep. he was fired from sprint for the same bs he doing to her. report him and have him fired again. PS. there is nothing in my comment that is racist, wrong, bad, blahblahblah. I'm a perfect little angel.

well, you can not only go into it via wifi. so my question: do you know anything? (exploits, etc)
if the mall has a open wlan, she should use secure sites only "https://blablabla.com" only... it is possible to hijack traffic, for example in malls "man in the middle method" (do not know why i know this.... )
another way to secure her phone is, to deactivate the installation of unsigned / non-market apps.
also, a password or sth other to unlock isnt a bad idea.
so, have fun - btw, you could ask that question for every android handset, op

There are WiFi sniffing tools on android. There are WiFi spoofing tools on android.
Possibility is there, change Gmail password never hurts.
But seriously, no sharing WiFi with other people and logging into private bank/Facebook/ other sites where your logged in with 50 other people on open WiFi. That stuff can be picked up, username/passwords.
Intimidation is the best answer...big guy comes up "alright who's the yutz messing with MY sister!"

Best VPN for Android

Hi. I am constantly travelling and using public wi-fi's. I've heard there's a huge risk for someone to intercept and steal my data and I should use a VPN to be secure. So I was googling around (found these two helpful resources: https://vpnspecial.com/comparison-table/ and https://thatoneprivacysite.net/vpn-comparison-chart/) and so far I am deciding between NordVPN and PureVPN. Both seem reasonable enough, but I'm leaning towards Nord, because I've heard they have good speeds. Any suggestions or ideas?
Anyone? Am I the only paranoid here?
I'm currently on NordVPN free trial right now, I like it so far.
Alright, I see no one's concerned about their privacy (or just paranoia, I don't know). So I've decided to pick up a full version and found this discount https://nordvpn.com/bestoffer, 2,75 dollars a month, pretty good I think as far as prices go. Maybe it'll be of use to someone, cheers.
I don't know if you're still looking for a VPN but if you do, I suggest TunnelBear or Web Tunnel as they're both pretty good VPNs and free.
https://www.tunnelbear.com/
https://webtunnel.info/
I can recommend Surfshark VPN. It is fast and secure and while it doesn't have many servers, it has some rapid speeds and supports unlimited devices. Android app is kinda basic, but it gets the job done. On the other hand, it is really easy to use: one touch and you're secured. There's a free trial in the Play store if anyone wants to try it.
a new deal
Hey OP, I also wanted to choose a VPN, decided to go with NordVPN, but your provided discount doesn't work anymore. So if anyone is interested, I've searched online for a bit and found a new deal with 66% off, just apply coupon code DEAL66 at the checkout. Maybe it will be of use to someone.
