Best VPN for Android - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi. I am constantly travelling and using public wi-fi's. I've heard there's a huge risk for someone to intercept and steal my data and I should use a VPN to be secure. So I was googling around (found these two helpful resources: https://vpnspecial.com/comparison-table/ and https://thatoneprivacysite.net/vpn-comparison-chart/) and so far I am deciding between NordVPN and PureVPN. Both seem reasonable enough, but I'm leaning towards Nord, because I've heard they have good speeds. Any suggestions or ideas?

Anyone? Am I the only paranoid here?
I'm currently on NordVPN free trial right now, I like it so far.

Alright, I see no one's concerned about their privacy (or just paranoia, I don't know). So I've decided to pick up a full version and found this discount https://nordvpn.com/bestoffer, 2,75 dollars a month, pretty good I think as far as prices go. Maybe it'll be of use to someone, cheers.

I don't know if you're still looking for a VPN but if you do, I suggest TunnelBear or Web Tunnel as they're both pretty good VPNs and free.

https://webtunnel.info/

I can recommend Surfshark VPN. It is fast and secure and while it doesn't have many servers, it has some rapid speeds and supports unlimited devices. Android app is kinda basic, but it gets the job done. On the other hand, it is really easy to use: one touch and you're secured. There's a free trial in the Play store if anyone wants to try it.

a new deal
Hey OP, I also wanted to choose a VPN, decided to go with NordVPN, but your provided discount doesn't work anymore. So if anyone is interested, I've searched online for a bit and found a new deal with 66% off, just apply coupon code DEAL66 at the checkout. Maybe it will be of use to someone.

No More XDA - One Wanted!

Had to hand back my XDA today - company went bust & I got laid off
Sure am going to miss it
Had it running as a SatNav, used it for MSN Messenger, Browsing, VPN & r/c of servers etc via VNC, had a bespoke 2-way data package on it + all the usual phone stuff. My T39/T68 are just not going to replace it
So if anyone has a spare they don't want? Or looking to u/grade?
Give me a call
Or I might just have to find some cash to get an XDA II :?
It is a common practice here in the US (way too common lately ) to give employees the first shot at buying liquidated equipment. The creditors foreclosing on your business will only be able to liquidate your company's technology items for a tiny fraction of their cost. Aside from marketable items like higher-end unix servers and cisco gear, most companies let employees buy their own cellular/handheld/laptop/desktop gear at considerable discounts. I'd ask if I were you, will usually be cheaper than buying a used one on the open market, and you know exactly what you're geting.
Puff, Mad max is right.
By the way u mentioned used the VNC RC. I've been using VNC for months now to remote control out server and some workstations thru my Desktop, but I was not able to used it in my XDA, either GPRS or dial-up.
I hope you could help me
Thanks
Joey

Https in PdaNet Free Edition

Not sure if anything has been posted on this yet, sorry if it has, but for all the non-root ppl who want full tethering, there is a pretty easy workaround, I wouldn't even call it a hack.
1. Once pdanet (free edition) has been started and you are tethered, go to the application on your computer and click on "Register Pdanet"
2. Then click "Buy" (don't enter any info, you're not actually buying anything)
3. Once the next page loads, click "I Agree"
This takes you to an https page meant for buying the application.
Don't buy it, unless you really want to haha. Now every https site will load through pdanet.
Just thought I'd share this.
I wonder if that is a way to reset your trial period and if you would have to go through the same process every 30 days or whatever. I am sure that it would be found out and fixed but interesting to know. I have already purchased pdanet and it works ok. I still get slow periods and random disconnects but overall it is the best fix for not being able to use vz mobile connect with access manager. It is also the recommendation from Verizon for android phones. I have talked to tech on 611 about it and it is no longer looked down upon(search for prior horror stories concerning huge bills) as long as you have the corporate unlimited with tethering option in your plan.... I was pointed to pdanet on the android market after complaining about still not getting the vzaccess feature even though I was told that it would come in future software updates (I prefer the connectivity of vzacces over pdanet). BTW, the incredible, for those of us drooling over it, is considered to not work with vzaccess manager even though it states as configure-able on the site with the mobile broadband connect plan per tech support.
EasyTether lite works way better than pdanet ever did for me.

Seems to me this is a pretty crappy thing to do seeing as someone has put in a lot of hard work on building this app. If you don't want to pay for it use the free version. If you need to https version then pony up the money and pay the dev for the app.

[Q] Chromebook/hotspot tethering/user agent

I know I'm not special, xda, but I am confused. I've spent the last couple days browsing and searching for hours on end trying to answer my questions and now my head is spinning yet still empty...so here are a few questions I'd really appreciate getting help answering. Thanks in advance and sorry for adding to the flood of redundant questions.
My desire is to figure out if I can successfully tether my AT&T data connection to a Chromebook.
I have unlocked the bootloader, rooted my Atrix and installed CWM using the following guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182871 I know the wifi hotspot works now.
My fear is that I will get caught tethering. Has AT&T's method of identifying tetherers been definitively identified yet? I read in one spot that they use your browser's user agent so I changed my browser's user agent and have successfully tethered (have yet to be caught) to my PC. Is this indeed the method AT&T uses? If so, how would this work with a Chromebook? Does it have a user agent? Can it be changed? How? I've looked for these answers but haven't seen them. I grant that I am terrible at this.
To move on to a different subject, I'm also considering getting the Atrix's laptop dock instead of a Chromebook.
Firstly, does the tethering patch I implemented allow me to use my phone's data plan with this dock without paying for tethering? I think that I've read that tethering works with webtop but it's remained unclear whether webtop only refers to the docking with a monitor, keyboard and mouse or if it refers to the laptop dock, too. I did read in one place that you could use the laptop dock but only with wifi. I wasn't sure if this was the latest intel on this subject.
Secondly, I'd be interested in hearing any opinions you guys might have on this choice (which one should I get?). I'm having a hard time deciding... I like the idea of a dock and it would be much cheaper but am afraid its implementation wont get developed more, although I am excited to see if Cyanogenmod does anything with it.
Thanks again for your time and patience.
As far as you getting caught tethering, I think it would only arouse suspicion if your data usage was extremely high. I not abusing data usage is a good way to stay under the radar.
There's people that stream movies, download stuff, and all other nonsense. That, in my opinion, is abusing data.
Use your home wifi and home laptop/computer for that sort of stuff, I say.

Thank you for your input. I've been under that impression but then heard about the user agent thing and it does seem odd that AT&T would use such an unsophisticated method of testing, doesn't it?
It can't be the browser agent, users can change their browser agent to match desktop browsers. I myself have shared out my wifi in the past on several occasions and have at some points used it for an entire 8hr work day. I have never received a letter from at&t and have never gotten any adverse texts from them for doing so. I think the reason for this is because I am on a 2gb a month plan and they don't bother with those types of accounts (although they may start looking / monitoring them in the near future). I have not tried to change my apn, packet sizes or spoof my ipaddress so they can't trace where my packets are coming from. I have also used a different browser agent but again no texts, calls, emails or dirty letters from at&t.
I do think they are closely monitoring accounts that have "unlimited data" plans as they are the ones that they can make the most money off of. The reason I say this is because with a 2gb /mo plan most people would tend to stay below the 2gb limit where as unlimited accounts would use a significantly more amount than that. Not saying that all people with unlimited accounts do, but at&t doesn't care about that.
I believe to detect tethering, they are using a combination of different methods including packet identification which there isn't much you can do about and apn activity. I would be interested to see if someone with an unlimited account would setup tor change their apn and switch their packets to match the size that android produces and see if they get nailed.
Anyway there is a pretty long thread already about this same very subject so I would highly encoure you to do some reading of that thread and post in it rather than continuing yet another thread on the same subject. For reference the thread is called At&t crackdown, have you been served?

IMO, this question is better asked in the "YOU JUST GOT SERVED" thread.
I found that thread highly speculative. I was hoping to distance my question from that in order to not receive speculative answers. Unless of course there was no certain answer to be had, which seems the case.
Old thread but I've just gotten a chromebook pixel and was wondering the same thing.
I do, however, tether constantly to my macbook and have never had any worries because I route all traffic through a vpn. So tmobile can only see encrypted traffic. Also, because Android devices can user vpn software, there should be no possible way of knowing which traffic is coming from what device.

Paid app or stick with Ads? Advice?

Not sure if this is the right forum.
I've created my first app, just a simple card game. I'm wondering if I should offer a paid ad-free version.
Right now its free with Admob. About 2500 active installs out of about 9000 total installs. It took about 1mo to get the first third, the 5mo for the second third, and 2.5mo for the last third. I've found that I get alot more new users whenever I have any sort of update to my app. With Ads, I've made about $1400 in about 9.5 months from 2.6M requests. Since its a game with ads, the longer a user plays, the more ads get shown and the more money I make.
If I have a paid version, I get a one time payment and then zero after that. I don't see charging more than a dollar or two. If I charged $1 and everyone that downloaded it bought it, I'd have $1750 and then thats it. If I waited a few months I'll have that much from ads.
It seems like I'm going to make much more just sticking with the ads. I'm new to all of this, am I missing something or does my logic seem sound.
Do an adfree version. Some of us don't like ads may I ask what app you made?

You're right ads are the way to go. Do you have any methods of sharing the app? That will bring more users and that means more income from ads.
Edit: I offer professional mobile marketing consulting if you're interested.
Questions should be asked in Q&A forums, not Development forums.
Thread moved.
This is the app I made: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rcs.video_poker_trainer_dw
I actually made 3 apps but the code is 99% the same.
I've gotten some useful comments in the reviews but also some very confusing ones (like the last one)
Sharing? The app is on the market. I figure that's the best way to share it.
So far the biggest annoyance has been working with the layouts and getting them to look right on as many phones as possible.

Yes sharing. By just putting on the market you are doing passive marketing. By switching to active marketing you can get a higher number of active users and a higher income from ads.

What is the best privacy cleaning app?

Hi, I am wondering what people think the best privacy cleaner is?
I have used a few before and i find most of them try to do too much like also try to be malware scanners and also try to run at startup to monitor your phone in realtime etc, i just want a basic app thats not got a whole host of extras that aren't needed and is just lightweight and can just run when i want it to.
So i was just wondering what other people use and find good?
I don't mind if theres a small price for one although free would be great, i'm not really up to paying the likes of a monthly / yearly subscription for the likes of ccleaner, i don't understand why anyone would even consider that, its actually pretty dear as well just to clean your phone.
thanks
James
