Now that root was achieved, is there a feasible way of installing 2.1 without messing up with the bootloader?

For all intents and purposes? No.

Really... I thought rooting was part of all this quest to update to a better OS.

It is, but to update the os the bootloader needs to be modded.

Root for Gratia?

Will Root, and when?
As of right now, I don't think anyone has done it. Us Aria users were able to use unrevoked--hopefully support for the Gratia will come soon.
Here is a previous thread--maybe you can work with them to get it rooted?

The current HBOOT on the newer HTC phones is the issue. Until another exploit is discovered, a permanent rooting solution is not yet available. The Unrevoked team made this tweet recently so maybe hope is on the horizon:

Second thread, second post, same answer. There is no documented method for rooting a Gratia that was shipped with Android 2.2.

The kernel source code is not the key to rooting a device. The bootloader is locked down and has closed a hole that was previously used to exploit and root the device. The source code that was released today does not include the bootloader code.

Ok..so I think root for Gratia will never arrive. Bootloader surely has another hole but we need someone who find it out.

There are several current HTC devices that have the same issue, not just the Gratia/Aria and there are several devs in the HTC community that are looking for a new exploit. Hopefully it will only be a matter of time...
Must sux to have stock froyo since last year and not be able to root. I just got my jap aria last month and barely keeping it together with out the root.

Thanks for the confirmation. I also thought temp root should be possible and that will allow you to run most of the apps that need root access.

On .21, No root, no CWM?

Forgive me as I'm coming from HTC land but I just got my Prime yesterday after coming from a TF101 and updated to .21 without checking if the root methods work on it. I know there's no root method for stock .21 yet so does this mean I'm unable to flash CWM and unable to run any custom ROMs until then? I'm assuming without root I have no way of flashing another blob, correct?

You have to unlock the bootloader first... actually, no you're screwed for the time being. You need CWM to flash a custom rom once you unlock your boot loader, but you need root first to install CWM, and so far there's no way to root .21 update. I guess you could unlock then attempt to revert to a earlier firmware version, then root, install CWM, and flash a custom rom. Once you unlock your boot loader you will not be able to receive OTA updates.... or just wait until a root process is discovered for the new updated, then root, unlock, etc.
See Dev forum all details.

I don't think it's possible to downgrade at that point. You need root to flash a blob.
I really hope they come up with a way of rooting the .21 update.
Damn, that's exactly what I thought. Sonofa!

You are able to flash CWM.
It seems to be working fine.

I might be a little confused. I can use that method to flash CWM but don't I need an unlocked bootloader to flash a ROM? But I need root to unlock the bootloader right?

i'm in the same position as you and found a solution from another thread
if you want a stock based rom download virtuous prime its based off of .21, download it first
unlock
load clockwork mod
follow install instructions for virtuous
flash virtuous, since the rom is already rooted you will be rooted as well
this is what i did and i'm running superuser and all apps that require root.

Short answer: No.
So before I go any further, I just want to make sure I've got everything clear in my head. I unlock, flash CWM, then flash ROM correct?
Edit: Nevermind about ViperMOD.
Edit 2: It's done. I unlocked, flashed CWM the fastboot method, and then booted straight into CWM to install VirtuousPrime.

[Q] I've an unlocked MoPho 2.3.5(build 254_12) Can I install roms and custom kernels?

I got a used Motorola Photon that has Android 2.3.5 (build 254_12) and it has an unlocked bootloader. After going through numerous posts in XDA I came to know that 2.3.5 doesn't support bootloader unlocking. I asked the guy I bought it from and he said that initially it had MoPho 2.3.4 - he unlocked it, upgraded it to CM10 JB rom and then downgraded it back to 2.3.5 (as JB was unstable). I confirmed my MoPho has an unlocked bootloader from here ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1650520 ). It's also rooted.
So I just wanted to know, are there any risks in installing a custom kernel/rom since my MoPho's OS ver is 2.3.5 ? Are there any internal conflicts that might occur since my OS version/build is different - one that doesn't allow unlocking of bootloader and root access?
No there aren't any major risks. Just make sure the kernel corresponds to the system you are using. For instance, if your using cm7 and want to overclock, make sure to use a kernel built for it.
Most ROMs are flashed with the kernel it needs to boot. Version 2.3.5 could be thought of as just another ROM. To flash something different, make a backup with your recovery then wipe and install the ROM of your choice.
Just be sure to us common sense and not to accept any ota update because it could lock your bootloader and brick your phone. Be sure to look at the stickies for a ton more information

I've the 254_12 build. And (I think, I'm not sure) the OTA update is probably the only way to update your system to 254_12.
What I'm not able to understand is how he could have downgraded from a CM10 JB rom to 2.3.5(254_12) without locking the bootloader. Is there anyway to do so?
All the root/unlock guides in XDA and other forums warn us, before proceeding to unlock, to ensure that our MoPho has 2.3.5 (198_7)or below to unlock/root. Shouldn't I be worried about it?
Here's a screenshot of my system specs.
No. You're unlocked. That's just your system build information. It will change when you flash a different ROM.
The ota update is the only way to update your stock and locked phone without any sort of modification. Since you're unlocked and rooted you shouldn't have an issue flashing a custom recovery and ROM

My friend, as I mentioned, the previous user had downgraded or "upgraded" the stock firmware in a SAFE manner that does NOT lock the bootloader. It's done the same way custom ROMs work. It just another ROM basically. Pretty simple. Don't take everything so literal in terms of 2.3.5 only OTA updated or factory restored phones are locked. Which you don't have

Also interested in knowing this since If you unlock bootloader you can't undo it and your warranty is basically gone forever?
So even if it's now possible to unlock the bootloader it's still not a very customer friendly version like it is on most other android phones? Didn't HTC get a lot of grief for basically the same thing and it ended with them making it possible and if I don't remember wrongly here they even provided a tool themselves so you could do it "legally"? Had a Wildfire before but it's been a while so I can be remembering this wrong. Isn't android supposed to be open source, seems kind of wrong to then use hardware locks that prevent you from actually modifying the software. But I guess that's a completely other discussion.
i had a wildfire s too. i was able to re-lock bootloader it was great. now i unlocked the L9. thought that icould revert it back. and if something happens, no warranty great

Question on the upcoming 4.2/4.3 update

What does it mean to the S-OFF and root?
If your s off it doesn't effect you the only way that can change is if you turn it back on by yourself. As for root it shouldn't be a problem I don't think the update will block it as most of us s off are running custom roms anyways
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
S-OFF is a security flag to write to any partition on a device. This means system, recovery, hboot, etc. All these partitions are therefore capable of custom firmware. Its the most freedom one can have one flashing custom Roms and other firmware. Root is read and write access to the system partition within a custom or stock ROM. Without root one cannot access the system partition its protected. The benefits of root are far reaching as many apps require the access. Everyone should be rooted to improve functionality of the device but many don't S-OFF as it is a more evolved process to perform as oppose to rooting.

I'm not an expert or developer but any update coming from Verizon will likely have the potential to disable the most current root and S-OFF methods. So if you're already S-OFF, then you should be fine. If you have to get your phone replaced with a non-S-OFF model, you will likely not able to re-root and S-OFF that new device. At least until someone is able to find a new root / S-OFF method.
Just my two cents,

I don't know what that is but rooting just involves flashing an app called "superuser" that manages different applications' root access. It doesn't cost anything and is incredibly easy to do without doing s-off.

I'm pretty sure the root method for the DNA (pretty much all HTC phones) does require s-off and is more involved than just installing and running the superuser app.
Also I wouldn't update to 4.2 it sucks it has blinkfeed which I hate.

Rooting the phone is NOT possible without S-OFF.
Running an app as superuser is NOT the same as having a device rooted. In the simplest terms, a rooted phone means you can access and modify system files. The most common use of rooting is running custom ROMs. There are several good ones for DNA in the development section.
You can currently S-OFF and root your phone with a tool called Moonshine, and it is free.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2314771
The only rooting I've ever done has involved flashing super user and I didn't know s-off was required. The other day I rooted a phone without doing s-off so I stand corrected.
You don't need to be S off to root but you do need to at least have an unlocked bootloader.
