Hello guys. I'm new to smartphones and Vibrant is my first. I bought one off ebay for $240 and it has Android version 2.1-update1 installed on it. I would like to know if you guys recommend that I ungrade it to Froyo or above. I've heard some bad things about Froyo and wouldnt like to regret doing the update. I've already backed up all apps on the phone. Just need your professional opinion on this matter. Thank you.
Well welcome to the world of the samsung Vibrant, lol, well obviously froyo us the best and You should upgrade and if you want, You should root your device and learn to put a "ROM" on ur phone like the ones below, and FYI, since u posted this in the wrong place, your gonna get flamed, next time post in vibrant Q and A.

A ROM is pretty much your OS. All these Froyo ROMs are really good, just know how to flash properly. I STRONGLY suggest you:
1) Consistently backup all your apps with "Titanium Backup" and google, AND make a copy of all your data on your computer.
2) READ, I suggest you read the Bible (it's Stickied at the top) and LEARN before you do ANYTHING.
3) And lastly, when you mess up, as EVERYONE, and I mean EVERYONE has, you will need to know how to revert back to STOCK firmware.

For some reason Titanium Backup does not work for me. When I run it I get 0 as a number of apps installed and when I click backup all apps and system files it immediately says backup completed. I've been using the Flii Backup. Is that okay? How do I copy all the stuff to my PC? Thank you for all the info.
Also, should I go with the 2.3 Gingerbread version instead?

when you open Titanium Backup, does it say that it has been granted SU permissions?
If it does, then we're good so far. I've had that happen when I first used TiB on my hubby's phone. The way I got over that was to hit the menu button and select "Batch". You should now be on the Batch Backup/Restore - ALL page. From there, I selected RUN for "Backup all user apps + system data". That should force TiB to go ahead and make the backups.
Now, as for copying the files over onto your PC, just use plug in your USB cable and connect it to your PC. Your phone should emit a little tone or vibrate after this (or at least mine does but it's been a long time since I've used stock). From there, slide down your notifications bar (slide your finger from the top of the screen to the bottom of it) and you should see a note telling you that your USB is connected and if you hit that, it will ask you if you would like to mount your SD card (or something similar to that). Select "yes" and your PC will ask you if you want to open these "drives". Select "yes" again and now you will be able to explore the files on your phone the same way you'd do it on your PC.
As for the whole copy+paste thing, the files work the same as if you're copying files around your PC. Generally, I keep multiple backups on my PC, so it might be a smart idea to label your Titanium Backup file with name or date (ie: Titanium Backup - Stock JFD or Titanium Backup - ROMname blahKernel).
Afaik, we don't have a stable Gingerbread ROM yet but I think our devs are getting pretty close. However, we have several stable Froyo ROMs available in the Android Dev section.

Yes. It seems to work now. I've used the Clockwork Recovery app and did backup through it. Would that be enough? Where is the Android Dev section? What do I do next? Thank you.
As far as the ROM goes. Which one would you recommend? I was looking at the Axura 2.3.1.0 and Ginger Clone R2. How about Nero v5? Thanks guys!
Welcome! And yes you should definitely update to Froyo, or a rom based on Froyo. I'm not sure what you heard that soured your opinion of Froyo...but it is a noticeable performance upgrade! It's been a while but I'm pretty sure the JIT compiler was introduced with 2.2 (someone fact check me pls) which should improve java performance multiple times.
I recommend Bionix-V 1.21 for a custom ROM made especially for the Vibrant. It's extremely fast and the community is friendly, helpful, and most importantly VERY active. I linked you to a guide that should answer any questions you might have regarding the rom, and android in general.

Update: Ok, guys. I went to this link and got the Axura 2.3.1.0 installed with the use of this video, which is very useful and I was able to perform this flash flawlessly.
Anyway, The ROM is really responsive and I have only found one flaw, which is that the Fast Web Install app does not work on it. I get the message that they are working on it. Also, the Titanium Backup did not back up anything. All was backed up by the ROM Manager and the Flii Backup.
This ROM has impressed me with its responsiveness. It seems like a high-quality ROM and this is the first time I did the flash, so I'm not familiar with other ROMs. However, this ROM seems like a good pick for now at least. Can you guys advise me where I can sign up for notifications about the Axura updates? Any further suggestions? I appreciate your precious time.
In the Questions and Answers section, at the top, there is a NOOB guide... I would HIGHLY suggest reading it. It explains just about EVERYTHING you could want to do to your new phone!
As far as your next mod... start customizing your phone! Go to the Theme section of the forum and browse around for some custom battery mods and framework mods. It's CRAZY amazing how customizable these phones are!
I used to use the ROM's on here, but since Froyo came out, I'm sticking with a deodexed stock of KB1 (the latest and greatest update). That allows me to modify my framework and all the phone images without having to worry about screwing up one of the custom ROMs out there. I always feel safer with stock... plus root of course. Replaced my boot and shutdown animations with custom ones I created... don't have them posted on here as they are made specifically for my band and noone here would want them!
Keep your contacts synced to google so you don't lose them, backup with Titanium every once in a while to keep your game data and app data up to date, keep reading on here about modding, you could start reading the google developers website to learn about the inner workings of Android and how to write programs... so much to do and so little time in life!!!

My Thunderbolt received an OTA update last week and keeps rebooting. I have ClockworkMod Recovery so the Install fails. I cleared the Cache with CWM and restarted the phone like it suggests in other posts elsewhere. I get a failed update message, I cancel out of it and reboot the phone. I also used Titanium Backup to Freeze "Update" and "Updater", but the phone keeps self booting into the OTA update every day . I searched for an update.zip and cannot find one on the SD card.
Can anyone suggest how to stop the phone from updating/rebooting everyday? I cannot seems to find the answer anywhere.

Just to confirm, are you rooted but on the stock rom? If so, you should be able to find some threads to go on from searching, but here are a couple where people got the update install while rooted:

more than likely you wont have an update.zip but rather an RUU. Remove the RUU from the SD card and see how that works. If I was having this problem I would do a full wipe on the phone backup my full SD card contents and format the SD card and flash a custom rom with CWM. I never understand what the point of rooting is if you are not going to flash a custom rom. Are you afraid? Worried about bricking? I just don't get it. Put the new MIUI on it. You will be pleased.
I installed Liquid ROM 3.1 and it's working like a charm. I was concerned about the 3G/4G compatability problems that most custom ROMS seem to have.
Using Titanium Backup Pro I backed up all my apps then restored them after installing Liquid ROM and re-setup the desktop and all is well.

Really? The ability to fix things like security holes, use ad filters, make complete, easily restorable backups, install a certificate for a private CA, or just have fairly complete control over hardware you've purchased isn't enough?

I was actually broken hearted that I was compelled in install a custom rom to avoid the problems the op has described. Everything "works" in standard rom. When you go custom you get lots of fun new features but you always lose something..... Could be vzw vvm or nfl live or fast gps lock or photo effects in gallery but it seems there is always someting you lose.

Been reading/researching for the last week or two; and the solid info keeps leading me back here to xda!
As a long time personal system builder with some OC'ing experience and flight sim beta testing, I'm starting my trek to the dark side of these android phones.
Just upgraded the wife from an original razr to the X2, and she's perfectly happy. I'm waiting on Santa for a new Droid Razr. So, my plan is to get started on the X2 with the goal of rooting it, then immediately doing a backup using Moon Shadow's excellent stickys along with the help of anyone else that wishes to post. Thinking the X2 experience should help to calm my nerves once I really get into the Razr.
Couple of questions that are sticking in my mind right now are:
Am I understanding the stickys correctly that I should be doing the nandroid backup immediately after rooting? This includes backing up before installing any optional apps such as TI, etc?
In Moon Shadow's Nandroid and Backup Recovery, it's recommended to use Dropbox to get the Recovery APK over on the phone and installed. Any other methods that will work equally well? Would a simple copy/paste of the APK to the sd card suffice? Or would I at least need some sort of apk "installer" to finish the install?
Also, any other apps to keep this X2 lean and clean so as to make it as simple and pain free as possible for the wife? She likes simple/easy to use. I'll be providing tech support and keeping it as optimal as possible.
I'll close this long ass post with a simple THANK YOU to all the members/devs here on xda for tolerating us "noobs" and providing a wealth of info for those wishing to learn the "right" way!
A nandroid is a good idea after rooting imo. Although you can always sbf back to stock if need be. The reason it's a good idea is if you are going to remove stock apps yourself, you can restore back to stock rooted if you remove something important that screws up your phone.
You can copy/paste the apk to your sdcard, no problem. You'll want a file browser to get to it and install. Personally I like Root Browser, Root Explorer, or Astro. You should be able to install through any of those.

First I'd just like to say welcome. You're in for a good time. Nandroids are just good to keep as a refference point so that if your phone gets messed up you can just restore the backed up image vs having to sbf, reroot etc. You are more than welcome to install any apps you would like before a nandroid backup but I recommended doing it before you flash anything or start making modifications that require root permissions.
As far as the recovery Apk is concerned, I just keep it on my external SD, that way I can just find it with root explorer or a similar directory app and install it from there. Very simple. There is no installer app needed, just turn on the setting that allows third party apps, select it within the directory and you should be given the option to install.
Not really sure what you need to keep everything simple. Maybe some specifics would help. I could suggest looking into different Widgets so you can have access to certain things right on the homescreen.

I do nand backups regularly and delete the old(usually keep 2 most recent just in case) to keep up to date and before changing roms or updating. you can also restore just the data if you go into Advanced Restore and choose data restore as long as your previous rom you did the backup on and the current rom you are restoring it to are on the same version (2.2.2, 2.3.3, 2.3.4, 2.3.5+ are all different). Its typically not required to restore when updating although some roms will in earlier testing stages sometimes or if a drastic change occurs to the rom but its a good idea to back it up prior just in case.
As far as apk files are concerned the easiest way for me to keep them is emailed to myself through gmail because you can install the app straight from your email without having to download it to the phone(there will be an install button in the body of the email when checking it from your phone). You can email them to yourself on the computer and move them to a special file to save space on your internal or external sd and keep the files for whenever you might need them.
As far as "keeping it clean"...just flash a clean rom and choose a script you can find and read about in the development section that will tailor your needs best. in my opinion apps that are made to save battery, free memory, and keep programs from running only make the phone slower and use more battery because those types of apps will always be running and therefore counterproductive. There are some good root apps out(search "root" on market) that help out a good deal, but they are few and far between imo. Just find what you like(or she likes), the more you find out about these phones the more uses you find in it.

From my reading/research I have it burned to memory to always stay with the same version when restoring! Her X2 is currently on 2.3.4 via the OTA update.
Good idea on using the gmail account! Had no idea this way was an option.
Once I get over the initial shock of getting it rooted and backedup, I'm sure I'll look at a custom ROM if she allows it. Just need to do additional research on how to choose the right ROM for her needs. And right now, I'm totally in the dark on choosing a "script"; but I'll also learn this as I go.

Preliminary Game Plan
At this point, I've put together an initial game plan. Currently have on the desktop pc: Pete's Root Tools v1.07, RSD Lite v5.6 along with the GB 2.3.4 SBF, and the MOTO_Bootstrap_signed.rar (apk).
Please feel free to confirm or correct my plan.
1. Root the phone via Moon Shadow's X2 Tutorial using Pete's v1.07.
2. Once Pete's tool gives me confirmation that the phone is rooted, upgrade SU and Busybox via the Market. Sure would like a confirmation on this step!
3. Prior to the backup, copy the Droid X2 Recovery APK over to the external sd card, dl Root Explorer which is going to let me "install" the Recovery APK.
4. Follow Moon Shadow's X2 nandroid/backup Tutorial by launching the Recovery APK and following his Backup prodedure.
5. My plan is to backup to the external sd card so I can also keep a copy on the desktop along with one on an external thumb drive. Sorry if I sound too redundant!
A few of the apps I plan on purchasing/dl'ing (don't mind contributing small $ for the pro/pay versions as I hope it thanks them for their hard work and encourages continued upgrades) are:

YES GET ROOT EXPLORER
it will.make ur.life SO MUCH EASIER in the.long run. You will definitely get your moneys worth within the first 2weeks of using it. Simple UI and very efficient set-up. All u need for a root file explorer. BEST choice
I don't use TI backup...
Anything TI does can be done manually by using root explorer to copy apks to sdcard..
I lied...ti can backup data for apps as well...but I have seen problems arise sometimes...I just personally don't use it...
I recommend bloat freezer if u plan on freezing any apps ...it is like dipping the apps in liquid nitrogen...best app freezer available PERIOD...((TI "freezes" as well but uses a different process and some apps don't "freeze" all the way))) ur choice tho experimentation is KEY and us the main point have fun with it..as long as u have a nandroid or sbf file u are good to try TONS of stuff knowing u will be able to get back easily.
Can't comment on "my backup pro" but I can say that if u store your contacts synced to google and/or backup assistant that they will always be available to u. They get backed up to an o line account (gmail for google...myverizonwirelessc.com>>>backup assistant ))) photos get stored on sdcard and shouldn't be deleted unless u choose to format sd cards.

Oh...and updating the superuser app itself isn't necessary ....good idea to update its binary tho....but do NOT worry bout it....the first time u grant SU permission to something it will ask u if u want to update the binary and u can just press the notification in the pulldown window to do it....
Busybox ----. U can if u want to.
But if u flash eclipse it comes with busybox 1.19.gitadrynaline...
Not sure what is installed when initially rooted...never checked...
if u want to update I recommend that version...I've never had any issues with it. And it isn't an app. It is installed to system/xbin I believe....it allows for different commands/scripts to work properly....someone can explain better than me if u need to know what it does...
u can update busybox via busybox installer from market....there are a couple...most are pretty fond of the one made by jrummy ....

I don't use TI backup...
Anything TI does can be done manually by using root explorer to copy apks to sdcard..
I lied...ti can backup data for apps as well...but I have seen problems arise sometimes...I just personally don't use it...
I recommend bloat freezer if u plan on freezing any apps ...it is like dipping the apps in liquid nitrogen...best app freezer available PERIOD...((TI "freezes" as well but uses a different process and some apps don't "freeze" all the way))) ur choice tho experimentation is KEY and us the main point have fun with it..as long as u have a nandroid or sbf file u are good to try TONS of stuff knowing u will be able to get back easily.
Can't comment on "my backup pro" but I can say that if u store your contacts synced to google and/or backup assistant that they will always be available to u. They get backed up to an o line account (gmail for google...myverizonwirelessc.com>>>backup assistant ))) photos get stored on sdcard and shouldn't be deleted unless u choose to format sd cards.

Oh...and updating the superuser app itself isn't necessary ....good idea to update its binary tho....but do NOT worry bout it....the first time u grant SU permission to something it will ask u if u want to update the binary and u can just press the notification in the pulldown window to do it....

But if u flash eclipse it comes with busybox 1.19.gitadrynaline...
Not sure what is installed when initially rooted...never checked...
if u want to update I recommend that version...I've never had any issues with it. And it isn't an app. It is installed to system/xbin I believe....it allows for different commands/scripts to work properly....someone can explain better than me if u need to know what it does...

If you get titanium then you should probably pass on my backup pro, it'd be redundant as titanium can backup user data like texts and progress in games etc. just setup a regular backup schedule in TiBu and you'll be good to go.

Thanks for pointing that out! My concern was to have solid/secure backups of everything important along with the wife's contacts, messages, etc, etc, etc, so if I screw up the I can retrieve everything she uses daily/regularly.

ash: since it appears your familiar with Root Explorer, I'm wondering if the app allows me to use it on other phones I own without having to pay for it again? I sent an inquirey to speedsoftware.co.uk, and their reply didn't really answer my question.
With TiBU Pro, they mail you a "key" and once the free version is installed on another phone, placing the .txt key file in the correct folder allows another phone to have the premium version.
At least that's my understanding.........

As long as the market on both phones is linked to the same account. You should be good. Just like buying a new phone. All your paid apps are still there to download again.

Wanted to follow up and let everyone know that I got the wife's X2 rooted following Moon Shadow's excellent Tutorials; and it worked perfectly! After rooting, I updated SU and Busybox through the market. After installing/launching the bootstrap apk, was able to do a complete nandroid following the BU/Restore Tutorial. Had one hiccup that was self-induced while attempting to start the system recovery, but removing the battery and rebooting allowed my second attemp to work flawlessly.
A big THANKS for everyone's help and support. Have to say TiBU and Root Explorer are definitely recommended apps. Have removed/froze most of the bloat listed here at the forum and have been backing up along the way. Phone is working fine.
Now, to continue my research on considering a custom ROM like Eclipse......

trust me on this. It will freeze apps better than TI does. I have read before and noticed first hand((I only used TI twice)) that some apps still run when frozen with TI. Those same apps when frozen with bloat freezer are like solid ice cubes floating in liquid nitrogen. They WILL NOT run until defrosted.
And if I want to remove any apps I just use root explorer to move the apk to my external sd card if I want a backup or I just straight delete it if I don't want it at all.

Appreciate the info on bloatfreezer! Even though I've got TuBU Pro, I realize after a few uses that I'm more comfortable with root explorer! And I have noticed a couple of apps that are frozen but still appear in the apps listing.
I'll definitely consider bloatfreezer once I've determined if it can coexist (for my use) with TiBU or should I uninstall TiBU first.

After jumping from htc`s -> lg(crap) -> samsung`s to motorola razr I`ve decided to stay. I love this phone, been a while since I got this feeling. It seems the manufacturers are releasing new models every week now.
But I want to root my Razr so I can freeze some bloatware. Hate all that crap the manufacturers keep shoving down our throats.
But when reading page up and page down in these forums I get confused about all the abbrivations and terms. Could somebody point me where to look or explain a little?
I`ve visited the faq, wiki, android general and couldnt find any "low level" answers..
-root, will i be able to receive OTA (ICS when it arrives)
-bootloaders, safestrap, bootstrap etc.. what does these mean?
-what do i have to do to keep it safe and "toy around a little" without bricking it? cwm/titanium/nandroid backup, do i need all these? what is the way to go, can i do a complete backup with all apps and settings even in widgets?

1) Root wont break OTA (it will if you install custom ROM)
2) With this root method you have BOOTSTRAP, wich install custom recovery(cwm) i dont really know the difference between this and safestrap, i used only bootstrap.
3) The better way (in my opinion) is to use this root method, install bootstrap and reboot to recovery and do a backup. After this you can play around with titanium backup freeze bloatware etc...

Boot strap is a way of running new firmwares, without actually installing it to the system folders/partitions. A little like running two OS:es on the same computer.
Pulling adb system is doing a backup of your system folder, since there are almost no .sbf files out, recovering can be difficult if you delete the wrong things.
(an .sbf is essentially a "recovery cd" for your phone.)
Safest way to do it, is simply:
Don't delete apps in system folder. Only use "freeze" in whatever root uninstaller you decide to use.
Yahoo and blur apps must not be altered, you can't make calls without them as it is now.
The most important tweak is IMO, killing Google maps, as it runs in the background.
A Goldcard is unnecessary on this phone, since it has the "app to sd" partition built in.
ed: No automatic backup is done, it's up to you. (I didn't do one and had to reinstall with a .sbf) >_<

Am I right in saying that once you have rooted and have CWM recovery that you could do a NANDroid backup as soon as you have rooted, and copy this comewhere safe on your pc in order that if you make a boo boo and it won't OTA update, you can then do a TB of all your current apps / data, boot into CWM, restore your NANDroid backup which should take your phone "back in time" to the point just after you rooted, and restore your apps / data after installing TB from the market, THEN receive the OTA?

ok, i`ve rooted the Razr, installed bootstrap and adb pull / system.
but one thing i think i might have done wrong..?
i`ve enabled safe system in the recovery menu. and it took a backup of my system to the emmc..
then i rebooted and nothing happened. held down power and volume down for 6 seconds. a little flicker came and was able to go back to safe menu and disable the safe mode.
booted up normal.
im guessing i am missing something here. a partition to boot or something?
edit 2. okay, i obviously need a rom.. can i use my original rom?

Hello, and thank you, I am happy to here some good news. I am obviously new to this, but I love to try out different OSs and remaster them the way I see fit. I have just not taken the plunge with android. Since I have never installed any, it's hard to say witch ones I would like best. I would take any ROMs I could get. I figure I can experiment and learn with my Eris, then re purpose it for my son to play games, take pictures etc.
P.S. I downloaded the Jcase / Eclipse3 one click root. Is this the method you would recommend for getting su privileges? I would love to hear your preference on an easy and up to date rooting method. My Eris is currently bone stock with official 2.1, and up to date according to it.

Yes, if you can find the JCase 1-click root, that will root the phone just fine.
There is another method very well documented here: http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/127861-universal-eris-root-dummies.html (which also walks you through installing for your first custom ROM.)

(So, if you need to flash gapps, you go into Recovery. Wipe data/factory reset. Flash the ROM. Flash google apps. THEN restart the phone.)

Oh, good question. I would avoid it if you can. The Eris will insist that you activate. However, if you follow the prompt to activate and then press the disconnect button as soon as you hear it ring, it will try activation again two more times. If you disconnect after hearing the ring those two times as well, the phone will give up on activation and allow to continue with setup.

Not necessarily. In my experience, xtrSENSE is fastest, but the GB ROMs are just fine. You may not notice the difference. However, xtrSENSE has a method called cache2cache that frees up more storage space or user applications and data. If you install a lot of apps, xtrSENSE may give you more space.
That said, there are disadvantages, including missing out on apps that do not run on android 2.1.
There is something called xtrcache2cache that you can flash on the GB ROMs to give you the same sort of space. I'll try to find a link.w

Not on android 2.1, but the two gingerbread ROMs will update the market to the play store.

The download link there seems to work.
Copy that file (xtrCMCache2cache.zip) to your SD card. This is only for the Gingerbread ROMs - it's not necessary for xtrSENSE.
Restart the phone to recovery. If you have already flashed one of those ROMs, simply flash that xtrCMCache2cache.zip file - do not wipe data or Dalvik cache first. Restart the phone, and you'll have probably about 20-30 MB more free storage space for apps and data.
If you have not already flashed GSB or CondemnedSoul's, do this:
- restart in Recovery
- wipe menu
- wipe data/factory reset
- main menu
- flash a zip file, and choose GSB or Condemned
- flash a zip file, and choose xtrCMCache2cache.zip
- restart the phone

OK, I will read what I have gathered one or two more times before taking the plunge. I am thinking of using the Jcase method, it seems pretty much idiot proof. I have the file and ROMs stored on my PC, and now on a CD as well, just so I don't loose them. If I have this right, I will:
Pre-Steps:
Copy the Jcase one click root file to an empty SD card, install a file explorer app capable of launching it, take a deep breath, here we go Or maybe I have to copy to android filesystem first?
1. Execute Jcase's one click, and after reboot, I should have the Amon Ra recovery. This is simple, but also the most dangerous part? If this were to fail, it would be similar to a bad BIOS flash. This would brick the phone, if I am understanding this correctly.
2. Then Use the recovery to flash rootme.zip now located on SDCard. Going to use a 2 Gb card from my old LG 8350 (phone before Eris).
3. Do Nand backup of semi clean stock OS. By doing so I will loose the stock recovery for good, meaning no more resets to OG clean?
3.5? On second thought, doing one last reset first would remove all user data with my name and credentials. It may be wise to do this, as it will eventually be in the hands of a 5 year old. This would prevent accidental purchases, I think! On the other hand, if I ever break or loose my new phone and need a temp phone, I could keep this image (as is) to use temporarily with Verison until I get a replacement! I can only choose one of these options. I guess the latter is best, and use only a custom ROM for my son to play with. Hopefully I can temporarily disable or somehow limit su before giving it too him.
4. Do Nand backup of original official image, and put somewhere safe, like 2 places + on CD then remove from SD for more available space.
5. Flash one of the 3 downloaded ROMs and also xtrCMCache2cache if desired to desire-c
6. I assume that appstoSD is something I would need to download now, then add after previous steps, if I feel the need!
7. Then its off to test land! I hope I understand this correctly. The one step I have missed is definitely very important. I did not verify the MD5 on Jcase's one click. In fact I don't even remember where I downloaded it from. Truth being told, I have never manually done a MD5 verification! I guess I have one more step that I absolutely need to learn as it is much more important in Android, especially for recovery!
Edit: I have re downloaded the file from here (XDA), did not see a sum to compare it to? I hope the file still is OK!
Edit # 2 I downloaded a MD5 calculator and this is the output (F34FECFFB985553B68D66F6AC1EF27D3) for the erisone010.apk file

Yes. You must restart the phone as if you wanted to make a phone call. Many people get too eager and try to get into Recovery before full restarting.
I can't believe that flashing Amon_RA is all terribly dangerous. There are ways to recover. In fact, I have not seen anybody report a brick after running the JCase 1-click. I'm sure that it will be fine.

You *could* do the Nand Backup before running rootme.zip. Actually, you only really need to run rootme.zip if you want to do something with root with the stock Android you have now. Some people may, for example, install the application Titanium Backup Pro (which requires root) and batch backup all user apps (menu->batch and choose to run that option from the list) and then, after installing a new custom ROM, reinstall Titanium from the market/play store and then batch restore all missing apps and data. It's a very powerful way to get the phone running all of your apps and data without reinstalling from scratch.
That brings up one more thing: if you decide to install xtrSENSE, you do not need to do a factory reset if you want to keep all of your apps and data. Of course, if you want a fresh start you may, but xtrSENSE will keep all of your apps and data and give you a faster Eris with more room for apps and data.
Also, it *is* possible to get stock recovery back, though not without losing all of you data. There is a ROM called Flashback_21v2 that will bring back stock recovery and an unrooted Eris if you wish. The phone will act as if it was never rooted. That would be a good thing to keep on your phone, just in case. (Though I have to say that I am hosting the location of those files on my website and I have no plans to stop doing so, so they should be around for a while...) You'll probably be fine with the "no radio" version, but if you can spare the space on your computer, (that's a bit of a joke; the files are small), I'd download both.
3.5? On second thought, doing one last reset first would remove all user data with my name and credentials. It may be wise to do this, as it will eventually be in the hands of a 5 year old. This would prevent accidental purchases, I think!

In that case, you DEFINITELY want to wipe data, even with xtrSENSE!
On the other hand, if I ever break or loose my new phone and need a temp phone, I could keep this image (as is) to use temporarily with Verison until I get a replacement! I can only choose one of these options.

No, you can do both. Do a Nand Backup of the phone after you root it, which will be stored on the SD card. Wipe data/factory reset and you can installa ROM and then always go back into recover and Nand restore what you backed up originally to get your phone back as it was when you ran the backup. Familiar with Norton Ghost for Windows PCs? That's what Nand backup and restore does - it takes a full snapshot of your phone as it is, and when you restore, it's as if you had just turned off your phone for a long time - it's back to the way it was at the time you made the backup. You can have multiple backups stored - as many as will fit on the SD card.
6. I assume that appstoSD is something I would need to download now, then add after previous steps, if I feel the need!

Well... xtrSENSE support apps2sd as it is, and there are scripts to turn that functionality on. The GB ROMs support using the Android-native moving of apps to sd, so I would avoid apps2sd for them.
7. Then its off to test land! I hope I understand this correctly. The one step I have missed is definitely very important. I did not verify the MD5 on Jcase's one click. In fact I don't even remember where I downloaded it from. Truth being told, I have never manually done a MD5 verification! I guess I have one more step that I absolutely need to learn as it is much more important in Android, especially for recovery!
Edit: I have re downloaded the file from here (XDA), did not see a sum to compare it to? I hope the file still is OK!

If you look at the bottom of the first post, "Scenario 5", there is another version of 1click with a better version of Amon_RA (that allows you to use the hardware keys to navigate recovery, rather than just the trackball; sometimes the trackball doesn't work in the original Amon_RA). That version I guarantee is safe, and Scary Alien has the MD5 right there.

OK, running 1 click directly from from SD card. Third-party apps ticked on before hand, check.
After running 1 click, do normal restart, then shutdown, then go into recovery via vol / end start up.
No bricks reported, that is very good news. Also good to hear that there may be a procedure for un-bricking in the unlikely event!
My Eris already has already has all apps removed, I tried to make it as clean and small as possible. Just looked at the xtrSENSE page and copied some tips, sounds nice and fast, liking that!

I have never used Norton Ghost, but I have used Macrium Reflect, Seagate Disk Wizard, Acronis etc. I get the image/snapshot thing. I plan to store backups in other locations, then copy back to SD if and when needed.
Just did some reading on the xtrSENSE page about aps2sd, guess I will do some more reading about native moving of apps to sd soon.
The MD5 I have matches yours. I downloaded MD5 Calculator and I guess it works.
After reading the page including "Scenario 5" I absolutely agree. I downloaded it, and will use the "scary alien" modded version with the added functionality. Thank you very much for pointing this out. Looks like no change in the simple execution besides the app/file to run, very nice!

I have to say that I have never tried it, but it seems from the replies in that thread that many have, successfully.

This may be redundant, but does anyone have a copy of the eris jelly bean rom laying around? Just found my old rooted eris with cyanogenmod and I would like to try jelly bean or ICS.
