really? is there anyway i can link it to the movie i have in my phone i accidentally deleted the original avatar

if you deleted the movie from your memory card you are probably out of luck, if you just removed the apk then you can launch the video with the default video player or from within the gallery.
i tried both 720p and 1080p in a mkv container and neither worked. i think it supports divx hd but i dont have any videos in that format.

Are you sure it was encoded properly. Usually they need to be at the right level like AVC 3.1 base profile or something like that, I don't know much about it, but I know many players are picky, make sure it's encoded at the right settings first.

Install astro file manager from the market (free) then go to your home screen, long press, choose shortcuts, then astro, navigate to the video, then select done. It'll show up with a film reel icon and when you click it it'll just play.

What about simlinks? don't they work in android? Could you not create a simlink on the sd card that points to the internal memory location of avatar? You would have to add it to any sd card you want to use in the phone, but seems like a better solution that losing the icon.

Just write an app that points to the movie on your sd card and then opens it in a media player and you can supply whatever icon you want. The app would be like 6 lines tops

My HTPC plays the same files that my Vibrant seems to be able to play. I've thrown some 480rips, 720rips at it and it plays fine. I've only thrown Divx/Xvids at it thou.
The biggest file I've though at it was a 3.2gig file and it seemed to play just fine. 5.1 encoded as well.

I just tried a 1080p mkv file and it said "file type was not supported". Then again I don't know if mkv is supported in the first place since I haven't really tried any other than the one I tried nor do I know if 1080 is supported.

I tried another 720p mkv and it played fine.

My Aria can play mp4 format videos by itself, but since you have no luck in playing it, just download and install the rockplayer. It can play many more formats than the phone alone can play.

weird... i found VPlayer (Free Trial) on my computer on the droid market, but not on my phone market... anyways, it says that the program is not compatible with my device. now that i think of it, i guess that is why it isn't showing up on my phone
any other suggestions? it seems like it doens't like these bigger files. i will even get codec format not supported. i try a 111mb video, and it force closes...

What android version do you have? Do you have the official 2.2 or stock 2.1? Or did you use Cyanogen mod to update? The Aria is capable of playing mp4 videos on its own as I said in my first post.

The Aria requires very specific specifications for MP4, or else it will not play.
Try using Handbrake and follow closely with these instructions.

Rockplayer tries hard to play the video, but plays it extremely sluggish, like 1 frame per second or so.

I tried different players and saw that most of the players work the same way. They all play the same files and cannot play the other ones.
Except Moboplayer, which played a 900mb AVI file very well, with synchronized audio, video and subs.
So it seems Moboplayer is a good option. Although on Aria it's a >10mb phone memory hog.

TV out

Hi all
Finally got round to plugging into my TV, everything works fine Music, gallery and all that but on movies all I get is sound and no picture. I read here about HDMI mirroring but didnt make much sense to me. Anyone able to give it in old man stupid speak so i can understand it..LOL
Lordao
If you have gingerblur installed you have to install the entertainment fix. If you have gingerblur with HDMI mirroring then the entertainment center wont work, If you look at the phone closely when using the entertainment center you will be able to see the video playing beneath the entertainment GUI on the bottom edge. If gingerblur is the case then go to the Gingerblur thread and there is a link to get the entertainment center working again using CWM and a simple zip install.
Hope this helps.
Thanks for that. I only have done the 2.1.1 upgrade and remained on stock. I have not installed either of the 2 roms in the development section.

what are the file types, resolution and encoding on the movie files? do they play on the atrix itself if you open them in gallery?

They are mainly MP4 files that I have ripped from my DVD collection. They work fine on the Atrix's stock player and I have some xvid avi files I play via mobo player, but both types of files only play audio when connected by HDMI.

Make sure your tv is set to auto detect format, or that it is set to 720p or 1080i.

Movies and videos

which video format can I watch on my phone and how do I watch it on the phone?

Pretty much anything you throw at it will work, and you play videos by opening the video player application.
But first put the videos on the phone .

You prolly will want to get a decent video conversion app on your pc and convert them to a good quality format that doesn't take up a ton of space for each movie. If you want to convert a dvd collection dvd fab platinum is awesome if you wanna pay a little to get it.
Dvd fab can extract just the main movie from a dvd and put it in just about any format for any device, psp, ipod, phone, plus all the standard vid formats like avi, divx, wmv and alot more.
There are some other apps on the market for playing videos on your phone but I've always just stuck with the one that came on my phone. You'd just have to try em and see what you like most of its personal preference anyways.

Jsmokey- "...and convert them to a good quality format that doesn't take up a ton of space for each movie." Which format is that?
I just downloaded handbrake..only has 2 outputs mkv and mp4. And you can tick on untick a 'large file option' and change resolution and frame rate. Im guessing all these tinker with file size. Trying MP4 now on default settings
If you use mp4, you might want to go into options and stop idevice compatibility because it puts it in a m4v file instead. I have no idea if this is compatible...just found out now and its half way through converting so i guess i will find out soon lol
The 1gb movie i converted on a m4v file, at the default res it provided me....about 640x300 ...is 590mb in size ..hmm hoping it would be smaller

I've always used avi and divx cause they have a fairly good quality and don't take a ton of room up like some hd and other formats which I think is a waste of space on a phone or pc, or really anything. personally I don't really think most hd formats are worth the extra space no matter what you're watching it on.

You can try ES file explorer and tapping on the LAN tab. Then add the server you're trying to play the files from and you can then tap on a file to play and choose to open with moboplayer.
I am using MOBO player. It's working great. Free and easy to configure.

BS player has hardware acceleration and works great on Tablet S. I think it supports SD-cards, but not sure. The .srt subtitles work great though. It also has a function that searches subs for you online. No more searching!

I use a similar setup as you. For my file manager I use HD file explorer for honeycomb and set up my network through the lan connection. Then I play the videos through MX player and music through Mobo. Some videos play better than others depending on the format but for the most part it works well. What I like about HD file manager is you can access everything from your network drive and it easy to setup. I just wish there was a way to create a play list for music files from my NAS without transferring files to my SD card. Any ideas on this?
Try CineXplayer I have had any issues also locates files for u when opening so no need to manually find files. No ads full screen no stuttering videos. Good quality picks up where you leave off in videos if stopped while viewing when opened back up.
Yes mobo player is pretty sweet, free and clean looking a must download if u wanna watch movies n things.
MX player does both (SD card, SRT titles) flawlessly. So impressed I bought the ful version.
no stop in mxplayer?

u can change that in the settings actually I believe (i.e. always show controls). Can't imagine why its necessary, you want full screen video normally don't you?
Strange. So when I start a 3 hour video and notice after 5 mins that I have seen it...I need to look it to the end as I can not stop it. I need to try mobo....

It's not Adobe Flash. Flash player has nothing to do with the music player cutting out.
Usually when it cuts out, it means the file is not accessible. So, it could be an SD card issue..
Try borrowing an SD card from a buddy and see what happens. Also, don't be scared to update flash player.

If you have problems playing videos it might be a codec problem.
Rockplayer is a pretty big app (get the ARM7 version for the Evo 3D) but it plays most videos that other players don't.
