[Q] Android on HD2 (??) - HD2 Windows Mobile 6.5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Oke Guys,
This question has been asked for a million times i guess. But the search option on this forum is killing me, i never get to the thread i want to
So this is the story, i have my (Dutch) HTC HD2, standard ROM, Standard 2.5 sense.
Only things i changed are the icons, CHT and other basic stuff...
Now, i want to try Android on my phone, is that possible without ROM Updating my system (That will affect my Windows Mobile Install)
And how do i get the whole android thing installed on my phone?
Well, hope someone can help a dork and nutnut like me
Greetz..

in short the answer would be no.
There are many factors that enable android to run on an hd2,mostly rom & radios for which you'd need to hspl3 your phone. By upgrading your rom you wouldn't be loosing your windows mobile-if anything gaining more from a phone that is somewhat redundant without tweaking or upgrading. After all once you've got a custom rom you'll love it all the more & now with an android port the best of both world's. The best thing I did to my phone after having. It a couple of weeks was flashing over a radio & rom. Take the plunge & you'll see the vastness that this phone has

Last I checked ROM has nothing to do with it. Radio yes, depending on the radio version you have it might need to be changed. Android runs from the SD card and shuts down windows when it starts so what would the ROM have to do with anything.

A lot of it is rom depending as I've only seem a handful of people who have it working on stock. To the op try it & report findings on here to give others the benefit

best bet would be to follow the installation guides.

I was in the same dilemma... Afraid to harm my precious HD2... I started with adding android to SD using the stock tmous rom and it was great until I had to make a call or received a call then it was all bad... I dealt with that for a month until I took the plunge and downloaded chuckys rom... totally worth it... most bugs fixed... sod here and there, but overall it's worth it!!!

I use a cooked ROM beacuse the one that came with my phone, in my experience, is too unstable. Or the software I keep installing on it is...
Anyways, I might even try making my own ROM, if I just figure out how...
(yes, there are loads of tuts on net, found a nice one for Diamond here)
yep, the first day i used TP, i had a crash. So that day i changed my rom directly
I remember the first time when i flashed my fone. I was so nervous. reading reading and again reading, just to make sure.
Yeah, I remember when I flashed my tytn for the first time, it was nerve wracking!! I kept having flashbacks from when I attempted to upgrade my firmware on an HP PPC (non phone), and bricked it.
but the tytn went quite well, I should be getting my Fuze tomorrow, and i'll probably go with the soft reset during setup to avoid bloatware, then wait till something pisses me off enough to flash to NotATreoFan's ROM.
I'm soooo excited!
I literally purchased my Fuze last night, came directly home and flashed ROMeOS onto it. The AT&T ROM is just horrible. It's slow, ugly, bulky, just outright disgusting. I can actually foresee alot of returns on this unit from people who do not know about custom ROMs or XDA in general.
Lighting a Fuze
I used the stock ROM for less than 24 hours, by design, since I wanted some experience using Touch Flo. I did not like it. Touch Flo and my fat fingers do not a match make. I spend last night, yawn, installing ROMeOS 1.4 (I like Hang Tuah's stuff, I have since very early Kaiser/Tilt). Before ROMeOS, my favorite was Dutty's ROM. But even his ROMs, while virtually bulletproof, are "over full". I light light, simple, fast and able to handle the web, phone, contacts and calendar...simultaneously.
Still, with all the ROM changes I have made, each is a little nerve wracking. Since this was my first with the new Fuze, I read a lot of XDA forum entries. And did things exactly as Hang Tuah and others with experience suggested.
Worked perfectly. (Whew!!)

My brand new pro booted 1 time the vodafone rom, used it 2minutes,after that i flasht it already
The original vodafone rom from the netherlands touch pro [email protected] ,cooked rom much faster/stable if you ask me
The second i had a chance, I put on romeos on my Fuze -
Installed the keyboard drivers, and some tweaks here and there.
Best choice so far.
Within 30 minutes of leaving the ATT store, my Fuze was running the Elite ROM. I've had enough devices to know that nothing stock is ever as good as something cooked up here!

I love cooked roms as well. While using the Diamond, I'd constantly be on the lookout for new versions of Dutty's roms. Now that I'm using a Raphael, I look out for the new versions of ROMeOS as well as the Elite versions to play around with.
I got my Touch pro about 10 days ago, It has the official 1.90.405 rom.
I find it very stable and serve all my need realy.
No crash, nothing what so ever of what I see people around here complaining about.
I must say I am very happy with this phone.

as soon i get it from expansis first thing what i did, change the spl is happened before actually i powered up the device 1st time. ... then just have fun....
This is my first windows mobile phone, came from a long line of sony ericsson phones, used the stock rom for a few days and figured this phone is going back to the shop.
Eventually i found my way here and read about the different roms, decided to flash and i think i have tried most of the known roms here by now
moral of the story is that now the phone is a keeper instead of a item i returned.
Currently using V09 by PDAVIET but will upgrade to V10 due to some bugs.
All i need now is a ssh client that uses the resolution of the phone in a proper way then im really happy.

I too like the original htc rom but I cannot stand the voice calling feature...I use microsoft voice command so I cooked up a rom and only removed a few things I did not like to be in rom and it runs stable as hell with no memory leaks and just do not trust all the **** others do with the rom. It runs perfect. Once htc comes out with a newer rom I will do the same thing unless I find a perfect rom that someone else makes. I did use other light versions cooked by others for the diamond but with the pro and all that damn memory it comes with its perfect without a few crappy programs that come with it.....

I too Have been playing about cooking the stock Vodafone ROM. I flashed and unlocked it the day I got it as I got the handset on my work contract but wanted to use it on my Personal T-mobile contract as I have a 10GB data allowance on TMob I might release my ROM at some point as I personally thinki it is fast, light and stable. I Also cooked in a few other goodies such as .net CF 3.5 and the Youtube app from an ATT ROM I extracted.

Sounds almost the same as me, except I come from a background of Nokia phones, very happy with the phone now it is cooked
SSH client wise, I use pocketputty which I am very happy with, as ssh clients go, as it allows me to store a ppk file for auth.
i drove from the AT&T store directly to my home PC to flash my Fuze. cooked roms rule. plus it is fun to play with new toys.
The day i got my TP i installed HardSPL and right after that i went to 1 of the first cooked roms from chainfire (firerom).

Ideal ROM environment?

Hello, I'm kinda new to the forum, although I've been reading a lot, as well as downloading and flashing a few roms onto my phone.
I'm writing this thread with a pretty basic but complicated question (sorry for the oxymoron). Let me begin by saying, I'm what you'd call a heavy electronics user. That means I get something and then I use the stuffing out of it, testing to see it's limits. That also means I spend a lot of time trying new software to see what my devices can do.
The Athena has been one hell of a cool device from day one, and the day I actually figured out how to install new ROMs onto it, was the day it really opened up for me. My problem now is, I need a rom which supports such behavior. I'm finding that the roms I've tried so far, all have a problem of their own. Some sort of bug or glitch which kinda dampens the experience.
In AP4, it was good, but I noticed some incompatibilities with programs I used on the original rom. I then tried AP5 beta. This rom is MUCH quicker, however it's very proned to freezing during video playback using coreplayer and now my mediaplayer won't play anything, it just likes to freeze and force a hard reset.
I am about to try Michy's 6.1 SPL3.5. I'm curious to know whether this one is more stable than the 1.2 version or not. Compatibility is a big issue with me. As I said before, I use a lot of different apps and games on my phone, I find it fun to experiment a lot and push the phone for a (look what it can do) feeling of pride.
I suppose one of the problems I'm facing is that my expectations of smoothness are a bit high (I had two iphones before this) so I tend to notice lag and choppiness as well as incompatibility. I'm not saying I'd like to get an iphone again, because frankly, I'm tired of that trendy piece of junk. I like the community here on XDA and the amount of options available for this phone thanks to all the people on these forums.
I would really appreciate some feedback from the other users (and even developers if they'd care to share) as to which ROM would be best suited to a user the likes of which I've just described to you.
Many many thanks in return, and also, happy new year to all of you.
Caid.
Welcome
Hello and welcome to the forum
The first thing I will say to you about cooked roms is they are in a constant state of trial. I doubt there is a cooked rom out there that doesn't have a bug or two, but when you put them beside a stock rom then you start to see how advanced they are. we tend to take a stock rom as perfect but they are far from it. I tend to think of roms like a piece of art, they are never finished, they just get to a point that is just about right. I never fails to amaze me the time and trouble the cooks of our forums go to, to make these roms for others to use. never be shy to use the donate button, just think what you would need to pay to get this servce in a retail world and always be ready to give constructive feedback.
Michy has turned out some superb work and I for one keep going back to his R4.1 rom as it seems to have the most stable features. having said that there is little to choose between any of them in terms of reliability. He has not long ago brought out a clean rom HERE that may suit you to try out software on.
In the end my own advice would be keep trying different roms and you will soon find a favourite cook and rom to use. SPL 3.5 just means you get more space to put things on a rom, I cant say that either 3.5 or 1.2 is more stable than the other.
Good luck
Regards
Jay

hehe thanks. I think that my clean is good for your need: it has not any add-in that can disturb other software. No additionals dlls too (only WMP HTC's codecs). This bring to his users a fast bootup time, and a fast response. (+ a lot of free ram!)
Michy's rom
Of all the roms I've tried so far (5 cooked roms to date) Michy's was the most stable, however, my gprs internet doesn't work with that rom. It's the same situation with the official English rom, whereas the official Chinese rom worked for gprs. I'm in China, and I have ChinaUnicom, so for some reason, with certain roms, I'm unable to use the gprs internet.
If I could get around this problem, I'd be going through all of Michy's roms, looking for the most suitable one for me. I just signed up with a very high priced mobile internet monthly package, so I must take advantage of it.
I guess I could always ask, is there any fix for this problem other than completely changing the rom? AP roms allow me to use the gprs, but michy's and official English ones do not.
Caid.
BTW, All the roms on here really are like art, and I absolutely love my phone if only for all the work that the developers on here are doing. You guys rock!
Hello again
GPRS and such like are ALWAYS FINE with all of Michy's roms. Out of interest, you are using the Network wizard app to set up your country and provider in connections settings??? 3g and high speed data are no problem either if your country supplies them
Regards
Jay
response to all gprs works.
The situation is as follows. When I have AP anything on here (3-5beta) the gprs automatically detects as soon as the rom is finished setting up and the sim card is installed, it just brings up a notification saying it's there.
For Michy's 6.1 rom, all the fields were empty as far as provider and settings are concerned. Granted, my phone seems to think I'm with another company (as the name of the ISP on my cellphone is the wrong one) but I can still get on the network.
I've set the settings on Michy's ROM to no avail, I just can't get on.
Caid.
Caid444;3116608ChinaUnicom[/QUOTE said:
Did it work before with official roms ? Have you tried their GPRS network with another device ?
I'm asking this because from what I remember China Unicom historically had a CDMA network and is late compared to China Mobile on the GPRS/EDGE deployment. So areyou sure that GPRS by Unicom is available in your area ?

hello again
Ok, I wrote my last reply at 4 in the morning my time, so perhaps it was a bit confusing.
I have a China Unicom account, NOT a China Mobile one. When I bought the phone, it was all in Chinese. I paid the seller to put an English rom on it (I didn't know how at the time). When the OS was Chinese, it brought up a notification as soon as I put in my sim card, that said, setting up gprs network. Continue? I clicked yes, and there it was, gprs network (edge in fact).
The phone called it ChinaMobile, although I don't imagine it's possible for a Unicom user to use China Mobile's gprs. The card is not CDMA, and therefore I would be unable to use CDMA network regardless (even the phone can't use CDMA.)
After installing the English ROM at the store, the guy who did it told me I wouldn't be able to use cellphone internet. Of course, he told me in Chinese, and I don't understand enough Chinese to really know why.
After I installed AP4 on it, it suddenly found the network again, same with AP network 5 beta. However, when I installed Michy's clean 6.1 (beautifully stable ROM btw) I wasn't able to get on again. No auto detect, and even after putting in the information from China Unicom, it still wouldn't connect.
There, in a very large nutshell, is my problem.
Caid.
OK I understand your problem now, I just checked my michy rom and youre right, it only has china one on it. the best thing you can do is contact Pawel062 or irus and ask them for THEIR network cab to install, as they know AP 4.0 inside out. pawel062 made AP 4.0 so if anyone has it then he does.
The other answer is load a rom that sets up your phone company and make a note of all the settings in the settings/connections/connections/manage existing connections, the only thing it will not say is the password . Then load them into michy's rom manually. OR ge onto your phone company(google it?) and get them to tell you them, but it has to be down to the last full stop!!!
Hope this helps
Regards
Jay
EDIT: Ok after looking on google, it seems there are so few settings it is more hastle to get a cab than just put them in yourself. experimnt a bit, just get GPRS working before you set up the ROM. then if you need to hard reset, no problems.
Thanks for the help.
I will try to contact the people you mentioned for a cab file.
I just want to ask, where should I try to contact them, and what exactly should I ask for? I'm worried that I'll waste the little time that they may help me by putting their help to work in the wrong method, or for the wrong thing.
I am REALLY excited to use Michy's ROM, because the AP5 beta rom that I am using freezes about 5 times a day (more if I try to do too much).
Thanks again for the help so far, and any help you offer in the future.
Caid.
Thanks.
Jay, thank you for your help. After reading what you wrote, it broke down a mental barrier I had about being able to connect. After being told that I could not connect by the people who installed my first ROM, I guess I complicated things more than I should have and wasn't able to see what to do.
Your suggestions have led me to be able to connect to the network using Michy's ROM. It has also given me more questions I will need to find answers to on my own, mainly, why does the network require settings from the opposing company. I am only able to access the net if I use the settings (including the address "cmnet") from the competition. I am now wondering if my phone is accessing their internet, and if so, how much money this will end up costing me if things aren't in sync.
I didn't think it would be possible to get on the net through the other company, but now I am wondering if that is so. I guess I have some work to do.
Anyway, regardless, you've helped me answer some major questions, and you've also helped me open my phone to more roms. My main thing here is stability and use, and now I can have both of those.
Again (third time?) Thank you greatly, and thank you Michy for an amazingly solid rom.

Hi caid
You are very welcome, i've been there, got the t-shirt, read the book. so I know how frustrating it can be to struggle on something, but its great to get there. Could it be the that the two companies share Internet?? I cant see how they could charge you if it was another company, and I don't see how you could connect to it if it was not from your own phone company. As for Michy roms, I've tried them all and for a straight forward rom with everything working I would recommend 4.1 a Vista type. An XP type one is 1.88, and his latest 6.1 is very flash!
Have fun
Jay
Thanks for the advice.
I've been using Michy's 6.1 clean for about a week. I have noticed it isn't very compatible with the htc task manager, and tends to do some weird glitch where the task manager becomes unresponsive and instead reroutes me to the time and date. I think I'll uninstall that app and try another. Any suggestions on what I should use to manage running programs?
Aside from that, I'm interested in finding a rom that makes the phone look quite different. I think what I'm most interested in is seeing my phone surprise me. I love Michy's ROM so far, it's fast and very efficient, but I still want to see some flashiness on this 628mhz beast I call a phone. Any suggestions would be great.
Again, thanks for all the support so far from all of you (namely Jay and Michy). If it weren't for you, this phone would be a whole lot more vanilla.
Caid.
edit:
To be more specific about what I'm trying to do, I really want to make my friend's iphone look functionless and linear compared to my phone I feel that because this phone is so hacked, there must be a ROM out there that really changes it's looks from a wm6 device to a more custom interface.
You can use spb shell or maybe other programs that I'm not aware of. That's the beauty of winmo, you can install your programs of choice !

Have you tried THIS one that goes with mobile shell, its very good and its freeware. Dont forget to donate if you like it though. You can even make it look like an I-phone if thats your thing. It has clocks, icons, skins wallpapers, and all touchflo. LOL

Which custom ROM for me?

Im getting a bit fed-up with the stock ROM from HTC. Too much crap on it but what Im really sick about is that its quite unstable too. Im thinking of going for those kitchen ROM like Heroes or the like. My question is, what are the recommendations that would work on my local SingTel set. Some of my preferences are:
a) WM6.1 & TouchFlo, hopefully with all the fixes/patches.
b) Stripped of the stuffs I dont need like; Opera, GoogleMaps, YouTube...
Any recommendations?

Maybe a Motorola Razr?
This post is kinda eh... well, the Raphael has so many capabilities, Opera, GoogleMaps/GPS are two of it's major attributes?!? I've not found a need for YouTube either but still...
If you're needing a simple no frills ROM, Da_G has one in the forum. Here, let me Google that for you:

I recommend cooking one yourself, with only the apps you want, and none of the ones you don't. hilaireg & Da_G (along with the creators if the kitchen, ervius & bepe) have made it quite easy to do so.
[KITCHEN][WWE][13.06.09]Windows Mobile 6.1 21051 Kitchen for Fuze/TouchPro [GSM]
or, if you prefer 6.5, the ever-build-changing kitchen for that is
[KITCHEN][MULTILANG][18.07.09]Windows Mobile 6.5 23007/21928 Kitchen for Raphael GSM
Trust me, it's not as difficult as it seems (unless you want to get REALLY into it - which is when the fun begins).

The thing with GoogleMaps that comes with HTC is that its installed to the ROM & overtime, it would take a lot of space on the Phone. I hate having to uninstall the current version only later to install it back again to Storage Card. Might as well get a ROM that comes without it. As for YouTube, the version that comes with HTC is old & furthermore, I cant uninstall it. Thats why Im looking for a ROM that is devoid of both so that I can get the latest and can specify th installation dir.

Reading Captain Throwback's post has got me considering cooking my own ROM.
The Raphael is a damn fine phone. I've never had an issue with memory or running out of storage but I don't keep too many 'media' type files on the device. In any regard, between Da_G's Plain ROM or cooking your own as the Captain has suggested, you will be heading in the right direction. I had my phone with the stock ROM long enough for the battery to charge then it was flashed. You'll be impressed no matter the direction you choose.
Have fun!

Unstable? Latest HTC ROM (from february) is the most stable of all. You'll see what's the meaning of the term "unstable" when you try some of the cooked ROMs, especially 6.5. I've tried at least 5 different cooked ROMs, and after max few days I return to HTC official ROM, because of stability and usability.

The thing with GoogleMaps that comes with HTC is that its installed to the ROM & overtime, it would take a lot of space on the Phone. I hate having to uninstall the current version only later to install it back again to Storage Card. Might as well get a ROM that comes without it. As for YouTube, the version that comes with HTC is old & furthermore, I cant uninstall it. Thats why Im looking for a ROM that is devoid of both so that I can get the latest and can specify th installation dir.

From the sounds of it you have a large storage card right? Why then waste space for pictures/music etc on the storage card by then going and installing apps on it? The only thing that is used in my devices built in memory is programs, as it should be. Use the 300 MB on board memory to fill up with all the pointless apps you want and store all data on a memory card. Programs will run faster from on board memory, plus a lot of chefs "modularise" prgrams that are installed on the device and therefore they use the virtual memory a lot more efficiently.
I would liken the way I compartmentalise my phone as being an install on a computer:
"C:" Drive for main OS and programs
"D:" Drive for documents etc
This means that you change out the OS without losing all your data. If you then use things like UC when you install a ROM cooked by a chef on here, you can flash your device 10 times a day and each time within 10-15 minutes of flashing the ROM you will be fully up and running like you hadnt even changed the os!!
For example, I am a chef (a beginner in the grand scheme of things) but when I am cooking a new ROM I can flash my device as fast as I can cook a new ROM (Bughunting is a nightmare!) but EVERY time I flash, I have my activesync running, my personal IMAP email running, my WIFI access points for home and work set up, my GPRS settings set up and extra cabs installed and my Owner information imported, and all of that happens as I install the ROM. Only thing I have to manually do is sync the clock (only cos I cant be bothered to get that working automatically!)
As for youtube, most, if not all the ROMs cooked up here have the latest HTC youtube app installed (I wouldnt bother with the official youtube app as it has less functionality)

Do I have to flash my ROM to get the newest TouchFlo 3D?

Right now I'm running the stock Sprint ROM. All I really want to change (man I'm getting boring in my old age!) is the TouchFlo version. I reallllly want the calendar tab on the main screen.
Do I have to flash my entire ROM to get that or can you just upgrade/install over the old TouchFlo? I search the forums here with a variety of key words but everything I found pointed back to ROMs of some sort.
Thanks for the help guys!

You can probably upgrade to a later version of TF3D, but truth be told... it would me much simpler to flash since there is a slew of things that need to be done to get the extra tabs and such. Besides, flashing to something like the NRG roms will boost your TP's performance... a lot!
Do you have any suggestions?
I actually just gave my Touch Pro to my wife... so while *I* have a huge tolerance after years and years of flashing ROMs and tweaking phones for the hiccups that come with such matters, I don't want to put her in a position of having to trouble shoot her phone without me or it crashing on her.
She's all about juicing up her phone with a new ROM but I don't want it to be horrible experience for her.
I was looking, earlier today, at NFSFAN's rom. It seems to be very well received although it looked like people were having trouble with the push-based syncing (which would be a deal breaker since her phone syncs to Google)

NFS is usually good... I would try that as well as NRG, Mighty, Vevitto, and probably Juicy. Hope that helps...

How to upgrade it? ive installed the Stock ROM on my TP(GSM) from site sunnysoft.com/htc/ and its kinda flawless and very very fast. I dont wanna change the ROM but i could use the calendar tab from sense 2.1 cos i find it very handy.. is there a way to add it to my tf3d ?
I tried to install sense 2.1 from cabs on this ROM but had the problem updating weather so i dropped it, besides that the ROM wasnt working so smoothly anymore.

Stuff for Sense/TF3D tend to write and drop a bunch of files under the Windows directory, which (under most cases) will slow down your device. So, getting it pre-cooked is always better as it is cleaner than the installation.

[Q] rookie question: possible to flash android on hd2 instead of wm?

HI!
As the title says, I wondered if it is is possible to flash an android build onto my hd2, instead of windows mobile 6.5?
right now, I am booting up in wm, and then opening android, running it from the sd-card, but since I never use wm, I thougt I might just get rid of it
is it possible? android does not run as smooth as I want it to from the sd-card, unfortunately.
regards
kristian
soon very soon a little bit more
week or 10 days the magic loader gonna be released and we will all get it

Has anyone here tested the Android boot from nand? How is the battery life? When i boot android from WM it's less than a day of life, and that's with everything turned off. Didn't know if booting direct to android saved battery life.
a better rookie question is: how do i search?

There are devs actively working on it and it will be released in the next week or so. It will require installing a new bootloader called MAGLDR. I wouldnt recommend asking about it here in the forums as it's still a touchy subject. Search & Read (search for magldr) there's a LOT of info about it here on the forums. Happy modding!
thanks everybody
Be careful discussing MAGLDR though my friend. It's guaranteed to turn XDA members into epic idiots.
