[Q] Market: Download Unsuccessful, then unable to reset - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Long story: Went in, got my Vibrant, immediately downloaded a few apps to play/test the device in the store. I got handcent and barcode scanner. Went home, tried rooting phone, couldn't get into the recovery menu. Gave up on rooting for the moment and tried to download launcher pro, and immediately after it started the download it gave me a "download unsuccessful" error, regardless of whether I was connected via 3G or Wifi. I then tried downloading several other apps and got the same error. Afterwords, I tried clearing the market's cache, signing in/out of Google Talk, uninstalling the apps I had originally downloaded, rebooting the phone; nothing worked (and I was unable to reinstall the apps I had managed to install in the first place, due to the same error).
I then attempted a factory reset and was unable to do that, given the error "No reset was performed because the System Clear service is unavailable." After going through tech support through everything I did, they asked me to do a hard reset of the phone, which I didn't realize used the same recovery menu as one must access to root the phone. Since I couldn't get into the recovery menu for whatever reason (I blamed my fingers at the time), I was told to go back to the store to swap my phone out for a new one. Did that, repeated the app downloading process but didn't connect it to anything other than a car charger, and the app store gave me the same error, and I'm again unable to perform a factory reset or a hard reset. I know it's not my fingers, though, because I was able to get into the recovery menu of a display phone at the store.
I'm going back to the store tomorrow to swap my SIM out, since tech doesn't know what else to do with it, but I was wondering if you guys had any input.
Short story: First symptom was all market downloads failed with error: Download unsuccessful. Second symptom was inability to perform a factory reset or a hard reset. Possible causes/solutions?

To fix the download unsuccessful error go to Settings>Applications>Manage Applications, then tap menu, select "Filter", select "All". Scroll down to Download Manager, select it. Tap "clear data".
That should resolve it. Found that somewhere on here and i I haven't had that error since. As for the other... Make sure you're holding down BOTH volume keys at the same time. I screwed that up at first because I thought it was a rocker switch and not two individual switches.

That seems to have fixed it! Thanks!

"Unfortunately, Settings has stopped." Solution?

I have a problem that I cannot seem to figure out.
I recently rooted my Samsung GS2 I7777: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36191155#post36191155 Whether or not that is relevant, I am not sure.
When I click "Settings>More..." the screen goes black and after a minute I receive the following error:
"Unfortunately, Settings has stopped."
This only happens clicking "more..." The rest of Settings is fine. I believe this part of Settings has to do with USB, correct?
I Googled around and found no solutions. I figured something had been corrupted recently and the easiest solution would be a factory reset since I have not done much with the phone. I unrooted and I made backups and went ahead.
After the reset was complete, the problem persisted. I did not reinstall my backups or sync with my Google account. I tried a factory reset + cache wipe via Android System Recovery E3, but the result was the same. I have tried resetting four times now, but still Settings does not work despite the seemingly fresh state of the phone. I did not install any roms, if that matters.
How can this be? And how can I completely revert back to stock or get my Settings working again?
Edit: Seems to be the same problem here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1862040
ideas?
Edit: went ahead and installed a rom. all is good.

[Q] [Stumper] After reset, phone stuck at initial setup; can't flash ROM as a fix

So, genius me got into stuff maybe I shouldn't have and now my p769 is not quite bricked... but is still quite useless. Perhaps the wonderful minds here can help me figure out how to make it useable again.
Starting at the beginning:
I downloaded the free SQLite editing apps from the play store and tried to edit the value of "data\data\com.android.providers.settings\database\settings.db" "tether_dun_required" and set it to 0, hoping to circumvent Tea Mobile's tether data limits.
The SQLite apps were not as user friendly as I had hoped; the first app seemed to give me an error when trying to set the value to 0; the next app seemed to indicate that the prior update command had worked (showing a 0 value); a third app seemed to indicate that the second app was mistaken and that the value was still "1". I finally downloaded a non-root enabled app, copied my settings.db app to a non-system folder, made the edit, and pasted the file back.
It is important to note that I was suspicious about why 2 other files from that same \database\ folder had seemingly disappeared but they were mysteriously disappeared, and there was not much I could do about it, so I continued on to test my wifi tethering.
The wifi tethering data limit bypass did not work, so I tried restarting my phone. The phone hanged at the T-Mobile splash screen (I was running stock V20f, rooted); the little dots on the original T-mobile splash screen were animated, but startup hanged at the splash screen.
I then did a hard reset (vol up + home + power button). This took an incredibly short amount of time (a few seconds) and then the phone restarted itself.
The phone boots into the LG/Android "Startup Wizard" and asks me to enter my google information, set up wifi, etc. I cannot set up anything because, for whatever reason, no keyboard will open. I choose "next" or "skip" to simply get to the point when the setup wizard says "Go to home screen". When I press "Go to home screen", the message comes up "You can return to this setup screen at anytime by launching the "setup" application from the application tray" and, when I press "OK", I see "Sorry! Unfortunately, LGSetupWizard has stopped". After I press OK, Startup Wizard app restarts again at the initial screen. It is an unending cycle. Even at that final screen before I press "Go to home screen", pressing "Sign in to Email" results in the same crash error message, pressing "Sign in to Facebook" results in "Warning Facebook app is not installed !! Don't test it" and "Set up voicemail" results in "Warning TMUS app is not installed !! Don't test it"
Home button does nothing, long pressing home button does nothing; back button does not exit the Startup wizard. I can't get into settings or any other app (except the browser if I press More Info when the Tmobile disclaimer comes up about anonymous diagnostic data). I don't have a custom recovery on the phone and I don't think I ever unlocked the bootloader. All I ever did was use cmahendra's offline fix to root.
I tried Cmahendra's offline kdz install again now but the phone won't be detected by the phone update software after 15%. I had this same issue when I first upgraded and rooted my phone months ago but then I could perform his workaround by starting the phone, and then setting the phone to reboot into Software Upgrade mode. Now I can't do that because I can't even pull down the notification bar in the Startup Wizard.
Can anyone point me to a way to get a reset to fully install a ROM? I will install custom ROM, Recovery, bootloader, whatever. It seems that everywhere I look for solutions to install a ROM, I need a custom recovery and to install those I need an unlocked bootloader and to install those I need to download files without any working links (many want me to visit mega.co.nz which results in a nice white cloud with an M in the middle and no download link).
I won't be able to troubleshoot this again until 6 or 7pm PST on 03/13/2014, but I am open to suggestions as to what is my best course.

I've actually just run into the same problem, only difference is I rooted my phone, then eventually uninstalled the system keyboard like a dumbass after I installed GO! Keyboard, on top of deleting the system home app after installing ADW launcher. Then last week I accidentally knocked into a can a beer while I was sleeping, soaked my phone and panicked, turning it on and resetting it (don't ask me why that was my first instinct...), then rice-bowling it for 5 or 6 days....Now it turns on, the screen is visibly waterlogged but still fine, however I'm stuck in that same exact infinite loop you speak of. The voice recognition obviously doesn't work either. And even if it did I'm betting the home app being gone it'd still go "Sorry! Unfortunately, LGSetupWizard has stopped".
All that is to say, I'd really love some input from anyone whose run into this problem like me and this guy^. I read somewhere on these forums that there's an 'emergency firmware recovery' tool in LG PC Suite, so i'm following up on that atm, but it doesn't seem promising because LG PC Suite won't detect my phone anymore
pls send help :silly:
Wow. WOW. After about two hours of searching these and other forums/pages I've solved the issue; I had to keep messing around but I actually skipped some of the steps listed and still got it done, I basically just booted the phone into s/w upgrade mode without the battery, then instralled the drivers for it's specific mode about two or three separate times (I attempted all the downloads I had just to be safe, and actually restard the computer or anything), then ran the lg mobile update tool. it took about 20min and after it was finished the phone just rebooted, and my home launcher, along with the voice recog was able to be used, however limited, didn't care really because I finally got past the f-ing "Sorry! Unfortunately, LGSetupWizard has stopped". As I type this I'm using voice recog to search for a keyboard apk file. Hope this helps.

[Q] Problem with an S4 copy

So I got a kinda bricked fake s4 from a friend to fix, usually it's no problem for me to fixed such things but this is special. When i turn on the phone it displays the message that the launcher stopped working, and system can not repair it. I can not access any settings menu to indirectly access play store to install another launcher, so i was gonna factory reset it through recovery, but the thing is, there is no recovery on this thing,no matter what combo i press, so i searched the web a bit, and found that i can install recovery through download mode and odin. BUT, this thing doesn't even have download mode. Is there anything possible i could do to somehow reset this thing or access play store to install a launcher?

dozens of apps suddenly having a crashing party

I've got a number of Moto G that have been working fine for months. Suddenly, one of them is constantly having apps crash. I'm talking literally every second. As fast as I can close the crash notification popup another one pops up for another app. android.process.acore, com, com.google.process.gapps, dozens of others. A reboot will fix it for a few minutes, but then it goes on a frenzy again. I've tried wiping the cache and dalvik cache with clockworkmod recovery. I've tried uninstalling updates for google play services. I unfortunately don't have a backup created for this device. I would try to factory reset, but the last time I tried factory resetting a rooted Moto G through the android interface it bootlooped. If I can't fix this, is there a way in clockworkmod recovery to "reset" back to just after I rooted the phone? If not, I may be able to copy over a backup from a similar phone, but I'm not sure if that would work.
EDIT: I think this phone might have just **** the bed. Bootloops when trying to turn on normally (unlocked bootloader warning screen, then motorola spinning world graphic, then off). Volume Down + Power in off state does nothing so I can't even get into the bootloader.

Your phone couldn't start normally..

Anyone ever get the below? Notes: Phone was working fine ever since I got it. I got it close to when it came out. S9+ on Xfinity Mobile (Verizon). I run Nova Launcher. I haven't rebooted in a long time, so for some reason I decided to reboot. When I did so it says "Phone is starting.. optimizing app XX of 116". It finishes that and takes me to the below message. I've already tried step 1. No luck. I have not erased app data, but tried to get into safe mode using power and volume down button. That did not work.
I guess my only option is to try and Erase App Data?
Android Recovery
Your phone couldn't start normally. Some configuration data may be corrupt. Follow the instuctions below.
1. Try again Restart your phone. If your phone continues to be unable to start, go to the next step.
2. Erase app data Deleting app configuration data may allow your phone to start in Safe mode. Safe mode allows access to basic functions, so you can back up any important data stored on your phone. After backing up your data, a factory reset may be needed to get your phone to start normally.
3. Visit a service center If you don't want to erase your app data or your phone still doesn't start, visit a service center for assistance.
.. and on the very bottom says:
Reboot Recovery Cause is [system_server:8409 RecoverySystemRescueParty]#Support SINGLE-SKU
Block-Based OTA Supported API: 3
PS - The only thing I did today that was new was install a WWE Wrestling game, play it once, and uninstall it. Everything else was normal. Phone, text, notepad software, browse web, YouTube, etc.
So, I tried #2.. selected erase app data from the menu. Took a few seconds and rebooted. Did the "Phone is starting.. optimizing app XX of 116" again. Went right back to the Android Recovery screen.
This sucks because I NEED my phone for work. #1 - it's my alarm clock. #2 - they track when I log in and out and where I go with GPS. #3 - I call back to work during the day.
I can get into "Maintaince Boot Mode" and from there can try a Factory Reset which I am hoping I do not have to..
PSS - I tried to erase cache no luck. Tried to erase app data. No luck. Always comes backm to Android Recovery.
PSSS - Just did Vol Up + Bixby + Power. Went in to Wipe Data/Factory Reset. It's 12:45AM and I need to get to bed. I'm hoping this will at least fix it so I can wake up and get to work tomorrow.
So far it's doing something.. asked me a few questions.. I got past WiFi and it shut off. I didn't know I was low on power.
Sorry maybe I shouldn't have posted if I wasn't going to wait a bit (for an answer) before doing a factory reset. I paniced and factory reset.
Anyway, it's updating everything now. Then I can reinstall everything I need. I did lose all my phone number contacts.
