I may root my phone just to get froyo, but is it safe? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, I was thinking about maybe using that one click root app I found on the market but i need to know how safe is it? and is there a fully awesomely working version of Froyo out there or even gingerbread I can use and if so how do I install it?
And when the official froyo update comes out will my phone still be able to revive the over the air update?

Using the OCLF/Root was completely safe and easy, for me at least.
No issues at all doing it, it went very smooth with no issues at all.
Yes -- you can still receive OTA updates once you've rooted.
Ian

def no gingerbread out there for you to run

uhmmm i think if you arent even sure how to root, maybe you shouldnt get yourself into a beta rom.

yEA, i KNOW YOU ARE PROB RIGHT BUT i REALLY WANT FROYO SO MUCH
ps- sorry for caps

Safe as in what? Secure wise or bricking your device? The Vibrant is easy to root but secure wise you need to be careful since your device will be "open" to any program getting root access.

I see people use the click app to root their phones. Check it out on YouTube that's where I found the info. Personally I am not going to root my cuz I don't want to deal with the headaches. Yes I have root one android phone before & was successful. I enjoy putting different roms but when I flash CM6 one his first updates on that then later on couldn't change the rom. The reason cuz I had a low memory I was told on the phone internally. So I am taking no chances with phone.

You cant type in all caps, then ps it "sorry for caps"
You should have stopped it when you saw it happening.

Too much work. Easier to add ps.
I be posting this from my wicked awesome vibrant!

Before Rooting....
1) learn how to use the keyboard
2) find out what Froyo and the consequences of installing a beta are
3) No, if you install Froyo probably you won't be able to get the OTA update when available and, you may not be able to roll down if you want to.
I would stay out of it if i was you

not worthy to just root to flash the leaked Froyo... You only get the 'skin' of Froyo.. there is no JIT and GPS is not working

I would not root, because judging by you, you dont know much about android.
Few devices have froyo,
No devices have gingerbread.
If you think gingerbread, or even froyo is out then chances are you dont know how to use root features.
ps. I am not flaming, k?

I understand what your saying, and believe me I know a lot about android and actually a little bit about rooting but I am super paranoid about bricking my phone for two reasons:
I love my phone.
I had to pay full price for it.
What I don't understand that much is about different roms and whatnot. As for the Gingerbread thing I was kidding, but I was serious about the Froyo thing...but after reading this thread i have decided that if I do ever root with the one click root app it will only me to install simple things like lag fix, adfree, etc. Thank you for your help.

To do it again, I would not root mine. It has been less stable since I rooted it. Crashes to a black screen that says "user fault not kernel panic" and "upload mode". This is using a simple one-click root. So I advise against it.
What you'd find, should a problem occur, is that there is no going back. Folks recommend install this patch and that patch, and deeper down the rabbit hole (further away from stock) you go.

you know the one-click root that comes with the one-click lag fix? The unroot part didn't work.
This was my experience hacking on the g1 too... sometimes things worked, sometimes they didn't. When they don't, it's a lousy trip.
I just get sick of messing with it sometimes, and just want it to work.

Trying to build a kernel with the new defconfig now. Will report back momentarily.
I don't know how many times this has to be brought up guys, but we wont have froyo till we have kernel source for 2.6.32. The kernel source we have working right now is 2.6.29
Just calm down and be patient, or get to work and start developing. There is only so much devs can do, and if you want a feature or something, try doing it and learn. We don't need new forums posted everyday about how you want froyo, or tv out, or ios.

New to this myself. Fascinate is my first smartphone. So I gather we are likely waiting for the 2.2 release from Samsung for the Fascinate? Then someone will likely take the src and remove the bloatware etc?
Is the Cyanomodgen version also waiting on this?
Main thing I want is tether and all the bloatware removed from my phone. I have not rooted and am waiting for a good reason to do so. Don't want to root then have to undo it down road or something to get some other update and risk something going wrong. Thinking of waiting for the GPS fixes to get out etc first. Really want the Cyanomod ROM for this phone.

The root process is easy and shouldn't affect any updates. Removing certain apps could possibly affect any OTA updates - this has happened on some Motorola phones.
Rooting will allow Wireless Tether and the ability to remove bloatware. Make it easy on yourself and just MOVE apps you don't want from /system/app to your SD card so you can easily put them back when it's time to receive OTA updates.

[Q] Could I root my Vibrant, but keep it stock?

Hey all, I would like to root someone's vibrant, BUT I want to keep it perfectly stock. The only reason I want root is so I could set the voltage lower and underclock the CPU using setcpu for higher battery life. Is that possible?
Yes.
Just download the root update. Zip file in the development section and that's it.

Haha, well basically here's the thing. I've a friend's vibrant, but I think it's hardware locked. I want to be able to root it, and use a touchwiz rom stock or hacked, BUT I want the ability to be able to go back to complete 100% stock. I'm a complete noob when it comes to the Vibrant/Galaxy S phones that's why I don't want to try anything on my own. Especially since it's not my phone. haha thanks in advance for replyin! ^_^
Rooting the phone will not do anything to your phone except give you root access to the system files and such.
Just rooting it will not change anything appearance wise at all. And you can even still get OTA updates, that is if they ever actually get those working correctly.
So go ahead and root. It won't change a thing.
And you'll be able to use those certain apps that only work on a rooted phone.

Sure, this is entirely possible. Just keep in mind that undervolting and underclocking isn't going to gain you massive increases in battery life. The radio's and display are overwhelmingly greater current draws.

Ah, I made myself sound like a total noob. I actually know what rooting does, etc, in fact, I've a G1 that I used for roughly 2 yrs, running CM, used a DEFY running a blurless ROM. I was just curious about the Vibrant since it's very new to me and I'm just being cautious. However, I thought I had a hardware locked Vibrant, but I tried booting into recovery mode, and it worked, first a weird screen came up, it said something like movicheckstart, and then recovery mode popped up, is that fine, and does that mean it's not hardware locked?

Yea, it's what I did for a while. Stock with root so I could clock, remove bloatware and run apps that require root. Not a bad gig but Trigger is so much better.

[Q] Anything DECENT for root users?

OK so this is like the 6th time I've rooted my device, after reading many threads / websites, etc, all saying how 'amazing' root is. Well, I'm still disappointed.
Is there anything good to use for root users?
OK theres titanium backup, but that's useless - to me - as bloatware doesn't bother me and I don't **** around with my device.
Granted, GameCih2 is good, but it rips the fun out of games after a while.
I can't seem to find any other root apps that make me think 'Damn, I'm glad I rooted my phone!' just so that I can use that app.

If you'd knew you wouldn't start threads like this. You're like a guy who buys a lawnmower just because everyone says how awesome they are, but you live in a flat. So you just store your lawnmower in the living room, and have no use for it. If you don't need root, don't root. Many of us need it for certain things we do with our phones. It's not because all the cool kids have it, so we have it also.
Likewise root ls required to carry out certain tasks.
SGS newbies seem to root phone just because rather than as a tool required .

The person that is happy with the device the way it came out of the box has no reason to root. I would think the average XDA member is not that user. The ability to have as much control of your device as possible is what root enables. For instance Titanium Backup allows me to backup my apps so when things go wrong I can restore my device much quicker without re-downloading every app.
Rooting allows the installation of Clockwork or Streakmod recovery which enable Nandroid backups of the entire system. Then to me the ultimate reason to root is to experience custom ROM's. These developers that take it upon themselves to improve the operating systems that run the devices are incredible. Doing things the billion dollar corporations can't or won't do to make the devices perform to the utmost of their abilities. This is not of course for people that don't f73k around with their devices. You have wasted you time 6 times.

[Q]How to update to version 2.3.6

I have an unlocked SGH-I777 (but not rooted) and i have been trying to update my phone since last week, from 2.3.4 to 2.3.6, but that seems to be impossible. I tried the most common way (settings-> software update) and it says The current software is up to date. I tried using Kies and it says that I have the most recent firmware.
Is there a way to download the update and install it manually, w/o rooting my phone?

[Q] To those that flashed back to 2.3.4 (UCKH7)...

How are things working out now after several weeks? Smooth sailing? Glad you did it? Any annoying notifications to update to 2.3.6?
When ICS FINALLY comes to this phone, will there be an upgrade path from UCKH7 or will I have to re-flash to 2.3.6 first?
Here's a tip: You have a choice when it comes to ICS. You can either:
- Root and flash ShoStock2, Phone Bricker, or another fully-functional ICS rom.
or...
- Wait for AT&T's hopelessly broken, fantastically buggy bloated ICS update.
The correct choice seems pretty clear to me.

You should be very pleased with UCKH7. I prefer it over ICS. I don't remember seeing any notifications; if you do see them, there are files you can delete to prevent it from popping up (device manager, device management, or something like that). In system/app it looks something like "wsyncdm" (may be completely off, but it similar to that). I would recommend using GTG's UnNamed v1; it's UCKH7 with some bloat removed. Ryuude's UnOriginal rom is also UCKH7. As good as the base is, those are the only two roms that use it (as least, all I can remember).

I went back to my oldest nandroid (2.3.4 stock w/root) a week or two ago, because CM9/AOKP were for some reason not retaining my saves from a few games I play. The AudioOut_1 wakelock (is this a bug? I would assume so, but I'm no dev) was too vampiric for my tastes. I don't want to have to turn off sounds just to keep my battery at a normal level. Not to mention, battery life isn't particularly stellar in the first place, albeit certainly not the worst I've ever used. I haven't made any effort to increase battery life out-of-the-box, though. Haven't run any kernel scripts or anything. I've never really looked into it, come to think of it. Probably should though.
Really I forgot just how nice stock 2.3.4 was. It was incredibly smooth (slightly more so than AOKP/CM9 - no slight jitter when scrolling home screens) and equally fast. Rarely were there any FCs and my game data would not disappear. Battery life was excellent and I could keep phone sounds on. Oddly enough, I stupidly ran an OTA update on my phone. Everything looked like it worked, but luckily it didn't, and I didn't end up with 2.3.6.
That being said, today I find myself back on CM9. Why? I don't know, really. Probably just testing it out and checking out its progress, since I haven't used it in several weeks. Still good. Seems more stable. A work in progress, for sure, but the devs are doing a very good job and my biggest gripe is that I'm incapable of contributing to the process.
Nevermind...

It's not so hard! Just go slow, follow each step, and you'll be fine.

Thanks for the encouragement. I think I am going to try it out. I have read the first few pages (haven't had time to read all 400+ yet, haha).
I'm not interested in flash counters, custom kernals and custom mods, right? All I want is to follow the instructions on #2c and stop. That will give me the stock 2.3.4 rom plus root. Right? And then that is all I have to do, other than reinstall all my apps and configure the settings.

If you read the first few and last few, you'll be OK. IMHO, if you do step 2 you might as well do step 3. You get CWM recovery, which is universally (as far as I know) recommended. Nandroid backup is the best thing since sliced bread...

You'll need to do step 1 to get your phone into download mode, then you can do #2c.
+1 for mgd76's recommendation to get CWM onto your phone so you can do nandroid backups, flash new ROMs, etc.
I just flashed using 2c listed in creepyncrawly's thread, quick, easy and reliable. Just came over from iPhone and I'm enjoying what seem to be endless possibilities in the customization department.
