First run on HTC Aria, some questions - HTC Aria Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everybody,
I just bought an HTC Aria and now I use it in Italy, but I have some problems.
First of all, the only language available are english, francais and espaniol.
There is not a problem, i prefer english menu, but on SMS I don't have italian dictionary...I think that I only need to install another keyboard?
So also Google Voice can't resolve my voice, he found absurde english words if i speak italian...this is a big problem, I can't use the more powerful features of android.
I tryed MoreLocale2 and CustomLocale without result, they need root to work or the Aria don't have any another language??
furthermore I have a problem with 3G. the phone work ONLY with GPRS, it don't connet nor 3G nor EDGE (or similar). Need to add the Vodafone APN? Because I tryed to search it but I have found only internet APN or MMS APN.
Thanks a lot for your help

I don't believe that google voice is set up for anything but English (and the US, actually). And the Aria doesn't have the 2100 3g band (only att US: 850 and 1900). So in most of the world you'll be on edge, and that's just the way it goes; it's a hardware limitation. It's not too bad, really: I was just in Central Asia and the Caucasus for a month using a succession of different sim cards, and it worked pretty well. Just no 3g.

Ok!
But is normal who i never see EDGE icon? I see only G (I think I can connect only with GPRS => 50kbps and not with EDGE => 200kb)
(furthermore the phone continue to ask me to set current time and the weather into sense lost my location if I disconnect from WiFi)

Reminds me of the time my old IT manager asked me once if I was a "be sea clist". I don't know if it's common or not, but I was unsure of what he was asking, so he just repeated it over and over and over, finally gave up.
Then I rode off on my bicycle confused..

Man, kills the joke if you gotta explain it.
He was asking me if I was a bicyclist. But the accent made it sound like "be sea clist"

cingular 8525 in brazil problem

i live in the usa and i have the 8525 and i unlocked it and supercid unlocked it via pof's method.. i used fit4cat to tweak it out a little and the ptt hack to use voice command via the ptt button...
Right now i am in brazil and i have tried several peoples sim cards and none of them seem to work.. it does not give me the invalid sim message so i know its unlocked...have i done something to my phone with the hacks and unlocks that make it not workable in brazil ..is there some setting that i need to set in order to have the phone work in brazil on TIM or Claro that im not doing...
Please help.. as of right now i am sitting in a hotel room trying to get my phone to work via the internet...
thanks
-abe
anyone have any solutions???
I would say look at the wiki to find the registry tweak that enables the band selection in the phone options. And then try changing the band.
Brazil is a 900/1800 GSM-band country. Have you tried switching your phone to GSM-only?
Incidentally, I'm heading there myself next week, and I'm equally curious about how the phone will react to the network down there...
well, i hardreset the phone and put it back to orriginal and that still didnt work.. i also was online with cingular tech support and they said everything should be working.. well it isnt.. and they also said it could be the radio of my phone... so as of right now im sitting in a hotel in sao paulo downloading the rom from htc http://www.htcamerica.net/support/8525/software-downloads.html ...maybe if my install got messed up some how this will fix it... on another note.. my girlfriends Moto Pebl works fine with both mine and her cingular simcard.. full service.... how strange.. ..
if i didnt the regestry tweak to pick networks to be on that might fix it .. but i should be fully able to roam already...
if anyone has some ideas' im all ears..
I found a similar thread over on HoFo. One guy also posts a solution. Here is the link: http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1058899

well i must say.. i didnt think this would work because of the fact my phone should work here by default.. but hey.. i gave it a shot.. i did the tweak and in the phone settings tab i set the phone band to select network type = auto and select gsm umts to GSM(900+1800)+UMTS(2100)..then reboot to let it search again.. and blam.. it worked.. thanks guys...

one more question that is off topic... on the bottom of my 8525 the mini usb hole as a black lip around it.. on one side of it its flush with the phone and on the other side it is raised a little above the casing... is this the same with all of them.. or is the usb bezzle black thing deffective on mine?

I work for Cingular and know that they sometimes do things that don't seem logical. Like building the ROM and not allowing the auto detect of a network.
Hi there, I´m from Brazil, if you want call me, send me a pm first. I have a Tytn and universal working.

EUREKA!!! Thanks for finding and posting this, Abe. I'm having exactly the same problem in Australia and I did the same thing as you; now I have cell service!
BLAZES, CURSES AND GENERAL DAMNATION TO CINGULAR for removing the 'Band' tab from Phone | Settings. I mean really, if you'd never used WM5 before, how would you even know it was missing? It's like one of Rumsfeld's Unknown Unknowns.
HTC Tytn in Brazil - Easy with the Tweaking
Hi Guys!
Before you guys go on tweaking your devices to death, try something simple! I just got back from the Far East where my Dopod was running 3G. I had selected Auto on the network type and band. Guess what, my phone was dead! I reseted and hard reseted and eventually it occurred to me that the problem may lie in the networks setting. For some reason my Brazilian service provider (TIM) is sometimes unable to "inform" the phone what kind of network it is running and what band. Thus I forced it to GSM and selected 900+1800+ UMTS(2100). It works perfectly ever since!
Cheers
yeh, i cant figure out why they removed the band tab... it is very usefull to have... and when i was on cingular.com i went to a live techsupport chat where the woman told me my phone was deffective, and when talkin to her i realized i had more knowledge then her on the device and quickly x´d out of the window in the middle of the conversation... Bottom line is that cingular should have never removed that band tab from the phone.. well, im happy for whoever this post helps ....

wierd thing happend... after i did the reg tweak and had my phone picking up service i then went to install a few apps i needed on the phone... i didnt like the way things were going so i decided just to hard reset the phone and start from scratch... after a hard reset the phone suddenly picked up service with no reg tweak.. i cant figure out why this happend because i hard reset the phone before i applied the reg tweak and still got no service..... so no my phone had no reg tweak and service. ..strange.. i wanted to cover my ass so i applied the reg tweak again to be on the safe side...

I just replaced a buggy 8525 with a new Cingular 8525, and both of them have the black bezel sticking out from the outside just a bit. nothing a dremel tool wouldn't fix (/shudder/)
I have had the "no service" problem in both Sao Paulo, and Rio... I did the band selection registry change described on the wiki, will see tomorrow if the phone change or the reg. change fixed my "no service" problem in Brazil.
as a side note, the macro slide next to the camera lens was very loose on the old phone, would almost move by shaking the phone... the new phone has alot of resistance when sliding the macro knob...the old one must not have been attached to anything!
UPDATE: New phone works great in Brazil, I did the registry change to allow access to the "Band" selection in the phone settings, but did not have to change them from the default "Auto" settings to allow it to find the networks in both Sao Paulo and Rio. I believe the new phone fixed the problem.
Cingular 8525 in Brazil
You guys are fantastic! I cannot thank you enough for the apparent solution to the problem those of us with Cingular 8525s in Brazil have had.
I have lost many hours, not to mention some $$$, trying to get around the "no bars icon of death" on my 8525 when I was in Brazil. Cingular have been totally incompetent in trying to provide a solution, although they recognize a problem. I just posted a message in their forum suggesting they get their incompetent selves over to this forum to learn something.
I am going to try to apply the reg tweak, although I am not as technically competent as most of you. Now I can't wait until I have to go back to Brazil on business!
I'm from Brazil...
I bought an iPaq from Cingular long time ago, and I had a lot of problem to get it working here. Now I have 2 Qteks, on boght on Europe and other one bought in Brazil, both working great here.
I think the problem is always Cingular.

GR8 Conclusion!
I've mine TyTN as well, working good since that arrived here.
Hi
The problem actually is VIVO. The started a new GSM operation at the 850 band and since them all the Windows Mobile quadband devices (also triband with 850 Mhz) try to register first at Vivo. Due to a bad network configuration, the phone do not try other bands and networks and remains at SOS Only - Emergency Only since Vivo will not allow registration with another SIM card. The same problem happens with Smartphones too, even with Treo 650.

Here goes some "official info" I found:
Cingular said:
From Cingular:
International Roaming Device Issue
Issue Description:
Cingular has identified an international roaming issue impacting several
different handsets and resulting in loss of service. Specifically, users
may experience problems when devices are taken into an area where North
American (850/1900) and European (900/1800/2100) frequencies co-exist.
Cingular is not the only North American carrier impacted since the issue
is device-related, not network-related.
The following countries currently have carriers broadcasting on both
North American and European frequencies:
Brazil
Australia
Trinidad and Tobago
Thailand
The following are known devices impacted at this time:
Treo*
Samsung BlackJack
BlackBerry 7290, 7100g
LG CU500
*As a workaround, Treo users may leverage the devices ability to scan
for carriers on specific frequencies.
Current Status:
Cingular is in the process of engaging the device vendors identified
with impacted devices.

Gettiing the t-mobile G2 ... little advice please ...

I had one on Orange but i have returned it due to only 500mb of internet and i prefer black
Just a few questions please ...
When i get it will it need to be updated ? (My orange one did, if so where will it be updated)
What do people find the speeds of internet like in the north west of England ? (With orange it was almost always on HSDPA, should i expect the same with T)
Also if the signal is not too good is there a way of boosting it ?
Does anyone know of a proper pouch designed around the Hero/G2 ?
Thats it for now thanks
James
Yes you can update by going to the t-mob forum and the links are all there
It is easy, I did last week.
T-Mob seems to be 3G at present, no one knows why, but it changed recently.
Saying that it's pretty quick, but it will depend on T-mob signal where you are, tough to question.
I got a skin of amazon for about £3 it is fine.

Firstly thanks for the reply,
Secondly i will ask them when i ring for it tomorrow telling them i wanted the fasted internet they can provide (depending on whether they can offer varied speeds altho i doubt they can)
Also what do you mean it changed recently, did it used to be HSDPA and now its only 3G ?
Also do you mind me asking what region your from please
Also any chance you could provide me with a link to the update as it would help others on here too
Thanks
James

I'm definitely seeing 3G as opposed to HSDPA more frequently these days, but I presumed this was to do with me changing to a later radio ROM. Is there a known issue here?
Thanks,

Yeah we could do with looking into this, i think i may start a thread asking all orange users what they see more frequently and what all tmobile customers see more frequently.
Then we could compile a bar chart

As a T-Mobile customer mostly seeing 3G where I live, but this has always been a bad area for mobile phone reception.
I live in NW London and I receive 3G reception 75% of the time with HSDPA only for 20% and neither for the remaining 5% of the time

Bear in mind - if you get the latest firmware from the T-mobile website, then it makes it MUCH harder to root and install custom kernels and firmwares. I did the upgrade on my G2 just after I got it, and then tried to root - once I ran into problems, I read more into it and it would have been much easier pre-update.

I think because the Hero update is an RUU flash rather than an over-the-air update it'll cancel the rooting if you update after root.
And if you update before root it then becomes very difficult to root - although the 'gold card' method seems to still work, I've not tried it personally.
I'm sure I had the H before the update, but I certainly get G or H now depending on signal. Can't remember seeing a G before the update, but I only had it two days before the update came out.

upgrading rom to turkish Htc touch pro bought at ebay.com

Hi, I bought this HTC touch pro almost one year ago.. my celular provider is switching to 3G but my phone cannot connect the 850 network band...I tried to upgrade the rom at htc's site, they answer the rom must be upgraded at htc turkish site. I have 2 concerns... I can't speak turkish, so I could sell my soul to devil without notice (lol)... and of course can change my phone language to turkish and make it useless for me...
Thanks,
Katya
rom version 1.90.456.4 wwe
If your device dosent support the bands your provider uses for 3G then it never will, The Radio bands are hard coded into the cpu so software wont change a thing

First you need to update your info like what country and what Cell.provider you use will help...
this is the spec. for your phone
http://www.htc.com/www/product/touchpro/specification.html
it says that the phone can detect 850 network band...
3G currently 900/2100
maybe you need to check with your provider to change your sim card to 3g capable one.....
for my knowledge some provider when they switch to 3g and you have older Sim will not work and will require new Sim card.
just give them a call nothing to loose.
this is as far as my knowledge...
let us know and good luck...
you have a wwe rom
so in theory it should be possible to upgrade but you need to softspl it first
for the 3G it should be there with or without abbo as long as you have a sim which is connected to the network. if it is not it is not available in the area or the phonesettings are set to gprs only, it shows a G then.
the frequenties are hardcoded indeed and are present in the touch pro.
controlled by the radio rom.
updating my post
Hi... I'm in San Jose-Costa Rica... my service provider is ICE, the goverment company... they just bought the 3g from huawei or something like that...
I'm going to try my sim in other phone to verify 3G compatibility of my sim.
Thanks a lot...
I really like to had the chance to upgrade my phone... I need a US or maybe UK serial number to download new roms
Thanks again

Its not necessary that HTC's Turkish site will have turkish ROM.
And maybe you should try a XDA WWE ROM.
And 3g has got nothing to do with ROMs.
You need to check in device info(in settings) what processor do you have if it is 701 or 702 then only you can have 3g reception.
if it is 706 then sorry you can't have 3g reception no matter what ROM or Radio you use.

But i don' think the OP understood.
Anyways he should be checking his processor.
And giving details about his device.
But for sure 3G has nothing to do with ROM/RADIO/SIM.
It depends on your processor, your network provider, your subscription to 3G.

As someone who has an original 7" Galaxy Tab, I can say that whilst I don't use the voice calls often, I've definitely found it very useful from time to time. I don't see why we should put up with what is essentially an artificial restriction.

Dave

Why people keep asking these things is really something
there's a thread that people even willing to pay for US galaxy tab to be able to call with that thing
there's some people who prefer all in one device instead of bringing 1 tablet and 1 phone separately, especially with bluetooth device so common now
I'm thinking of changing my tab to flyer when i learned that flyer can make calls, but after hearing this, i'm glad i bought my tab much earlier ^^
i have my galaxy tab, and as long as HTC wont make calls am sticking to my galaxy tab, i don't know if HTC think they can go head to head with ipad and think they will have the upper hand, am HTC loyal but of course if ipad and flyer are booth useless "feature wise" then i will go to ipad
I found this thread to be very amusing. The Flyer is a Tablet, if you want to make calles then use your phone. To my knowledge none of the tablets that are even equipped with cellular data make phone calls. Not even the ipad makes phone calls.
The old HTC Advantage which is more a netbook did make phone calls. However you had to use a headset

Yes, I have to agree here. I don't need my tablet to be a phone. In a pinch, I can make a call via Skype. A tablet will never make me shed the convenience of a smartphone.

thanks man! appreciate it.. i know that the atrix have quadband for gsm which supports 900/1800 here in the phils and for the 3G, the band here is 2100, why it wont work? ... and other than updating manually, can i update it via wi-fi?
The 2100 band is the problem. AT&T Atrix doesn't support that band.
I don't think the OTA works using wifi but you can download the stock update using wifi and apply it.
CORRECTION: it does support the 2100 3G frequency. I didn't understand the whole WCDMA vs GSM thing correctly
i have read some old reviews when it is still in Froyo and there are a lot of complaints about the laggy pinch to zoom of Atrix.. how is the pinch to zoom of pictures in Atrix GB?
I have not experienced any problems. The zoom is very responsive
well i just hope someone who bought an unlocked at&t Atrix from the US and used it here in the Philippines would post their experience about the phone. i have read from different sites and forums that they have complaints about Atrix connectivity like wi-fi and bluetooth in different countries.
it's just too bad only few people here in the Philippines use Atrix.
I used my phone in the philippines. I was able to get internet on it. Not sure it was 3g but it was the h+ symbol on both smart and globe. I went to their offices to help set it up. Just remember, most places won't have 3g yet especially those place that don't support smartbro or globe broadband which uses the 3g signal I believe. Just ask for help there.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth use the same standards around the world. I wouldn't pay too much attention to those complaints.
The issue with GSM coverage is that the phone must support the frequency bands for the local carrier's equipment, and the carrier must support the specific GSM standards (GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, HSUPA, LTE, etc.) that the phone is capable of. The Atrix 4G does indeed support 2100 MHz but as other folks have noted in this thread, the main carriers in the Phils (Smart and Globe) don't support HSPA+.

im quite confused about that 3G thing.. your post was right.. Philippines do not belong to the list of HSUPA networks.. but when I viewed the list of HSDPA networks, Philippines was there.. (i could not share the link for the meantime, 3 more posts needed).. this got me really confused.. im afraid i cannot use internet services by ISP.. maybe wi-fi only..
thank you guys for helping.. i really appreciate it.

I'd be interested to see your link, but if it came from the same site as the one where folks think that wi-fi and BT won't work in the Phils. then again, I wouldn't put much stock in that claim. HSPA upgrades aren't cheap and with 1 Peso per minute calling plans I don't think the carriers there have much of an upgrade budget. (My wife is a Filipina and has had GSM phones here in the states ever since AT&T has been selling them.)

No problem with the questions.
I don't recall if my Atrix had an option for SMS delivery reports prior to me applying the OTA update to GB. I don't see that option now, but maybe I'm looking in the wrong place. In any event that sounds like a feature of the Android OS (if it actually exists). So if it's lacking (or present ) on other Android phones then I would expect the same for the Atrix.
thanks andy for the informative replies. Im quite relieved now after i have read the previous post by mamoranto.
because i have have had 5 GSM phones from the states which came from different carriers and i have no idea on their specific details (because mostly are gifts), out of the 5 phones only 2 phones are used for "all around, daily purposes" because here in the philippines, texting is the number purpose of a phone. does the Atrix have sent items/messages stored after you send an sms?
sorry for my noobish questions.

Well I stand corrected.
The "Globe Telecom" page on Wikipedia claims both 3G and HSDPA support on their networks. Apparently they've just begun rolling out WiMAX in Metro Manila and points south as well. This page reads like marketing copy, so I assume this info comes straight from Globe.
Dang...wish I was in the Philippines again!
oooppss sorry for the previous post... it was answered.

I think *every* phone in the Phils originally came from the states, LOL. Or at least that's the way with my wife's family. My sis-in-law just got my daughter's barely-used iPhone 3Gs, and my niece there just got my wife's BlackBerry Curve (wife and daughter had to get new iPhone 4).
Are you gonna buy this Atrix new there? You must be rich...
P.S. The Atrix does keep copies of sent and received SMS messages. It shows them in threads/conversations like iPhone, or Chikka.
It uses the Text Messaging app which I think is part of the Android OS. Motorola also throws in their own messaging widget if you want you want to use that.
My dinner break is over and I need to quit this thread for now...
Mabuhay!
