[Q] 16 Million Colours - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

it has been announced by Sony Ericsson on twitter that in the update the colours will not be updated from 65k to 16m - yet again more disappointing news from Sony :/
does anyone know if this is to be included in future updates (If any)?

I don't really understand the whole hype over the color depth issue.
Do you really think having 16 millions colors will change anything, or is it just to have the big numbers ?
What we currently have is pretty decent, in older updates the color banding was slightly visible due to the lack of dithering (interpolation), but latter updates (namely R2B) introduced some dithering and now it's much less apparent.
Also the X10 LCD panel, like 95% of all LCD panels, uses the TN technology (as per the viewing angles) so even if it was sent full 24bit colors, it wouldn't show more than 262000 colors with some dithering (since TN panels only use 6bit per color channel instead of 8, that makes it 18bits which is (1 << 18) = 262144)
So anyway, most screens, even the one you're currently reading this on, don't support the full 24bit color range (unless you're using a profesionnal PVA monitor )
And I'm pretty sure you wouldn't notice the difference in most cases, at least I know could hardly find the difference at all, and i'm much more concerned about someone hacking multitouch in this thing than increasing the color depth

I don't get it either.. Quite happy with my screen too. More concerned that trying to process 16m colours will just slow it down..

LOL, I'm not colourblind, at least I dont think I am.

Same im not that fussed about this, the screen quality is already good.

to be fair thought i am totally unhappy with SE but the screen is more than satisfy for me, i really doubt anyone on earth can just watch the phone and tell us it's 65k or 16m

For those who cannot see the different between 65k and 16m color, just install Power Widget, and you will see how suck your x10 can display widget color

Unless you have a deep fascination with staring at colour gradients lack of 16 million colours is no problem

Do you have try snowstorm and news and weather widget to see the beaufitul gradient ? Try to change desktop with them you will see a GREAT rainbow yea

Just try the facebook widget, or even engadget for that matter
Just spoils the whole screen imo
Edit: Added proof (look at the engadget widget and ignore everything else )

Very poor image color because of X10 only has 65k. Unaceptable

Flagship phone my ass. Never buying an SE phone again.

only reason i made this post was because a couple of days i used a Samsung galaxy s and the screen is probably 2 times as good and it's cheaper.
it is also alot faster, my phone just didn't seem to compare
the galaxy was using android 2.1 don't know if that's why the performance is better or not but it's a little disappointing and discomforting

2.1 would make a differance i think.

All of u people complaining i dare u go and get a galaxy s i dare you, i will laugh my ass off from how much more disapointed you will be with the samsung. Now you might be pissed but then you will be crying and pulling your hair out thay you bought such a disaster phone. Go look in the market there was a person looking to trade a captivate strait up for an x10 last week. You people dont know wtf u talking about. Galaxy s is a nightmare compared to x10.

Photon display stinks.

I went to the sprint store all psyched to finally make the jump to android and pick up a Photon. I went over to take a look at it and couldn't have been more disappointed. Not only was the UI god awful (I was willing to overlook this in expectation of new roms), but the display is simply the worst i've ever seen on a phone. It pixelizes everything. Everything looks annoyingly blocky.
Just a word of caution to those who are planning on buying the thing mail order. Do yourself a favor and find some way to see it person before you fork over your cash.

To save battery and for display purposes, stock setting for brightness is 1/2 way, go into settings and turn it up. looks great!
Not sure what phone you looked at but my photon display is on par with my old samsung epic (and vibrant when I was with T-Mobile)..this screen is brighter, clear, and not heavily contrasted like my samsung phones although it looks to have a slight blue tint?...the colors are pretty realistic and it is definitely not pixelated and blocky. Maybe you looked at the cheap Moto phone?

I keep mine turned all the way down. I don't understand the complaints about the screen. But maybe I should have my glasses updated. Lol
Matter of opinion. I checked the Photon and 3d out and thought the photon was much better. As far as blur vs sense I would and did replace then both with a custom launcher because they both suck. Vanilla is the only way to go and moto is closer to that than htc.

Just came over from an NS4G (30 day exchange), and for me the NS4G was easier on the eyes with better colors and clarity but the Photons added .3 screen makes up for it and its brightness makes it far easier to see in sunlight than anything else I've tried. Always a trade off and there's no question that the Pentile screen improves battery life.
I'm fairy new to android but found goLauncher has everything I need for the NS4G and the Photon.

I'm in love with the display. I barely noticed the pixelization. Screen is way brighter than any other qhd I've seen. I came from a vibrant then to epic and now to photon and I would have to say this phone is as close to brightness and color display to samoled than any other sprint device. I love it and have no regrets. Also on the upside I could never root this phone or flash roms and I would still be satisfied.

I'd say: absolutely. If you're looking for a new phone, do NOT take what you read in the forums to heart. The Photon screen does use a different technology, PenTile, that some very vocal people tend to dislike while many others either don't see the difference or don't care about it, and that at the same time offers significant advantages in power utilization, brightness, and outdoor visibility.
So, yes, go check the screen out for yourself before discounting this phone. My guess is that the vast majority of people will like it for its brightness, power efficiency, outstanding colors, and visibility in direct sunlight, and won't notice the pixelation at all.
after having a evo 4g (12 months) then a evo 3D (30 days of use) i see NO big difference, and really think some people have really nothing better to do with thier time other then critize something they don't own (like the OP), or people who want to make sure they pick on "what ever" about a new phone so they can say to THEMSELVES the phone they had purchased earlier is better.

to each his own i guess...i came from a evo to a evo 3d then to this and i must admit that the evo 4g screen was slightly sharper, the photon screen is far from blocky...unless ur like 3 inches away from the screen, u can't notice.
i find it funny so may people are bashing this screen but praising the super amoled screens which in the most part, use the same sub pixel design. every amoled screen ive seen looks exactly identical to the photon pentile screen.
all it took was one person to say something negative for everyone to jump on the bandwagon of hate.
i like the photon screen, looks good to me. yea little pixelated here and there but its a phone....
They screen looks decent not up to Samsung standards I compared with my vibrant an it was ok a little pixelated I think others notice it more then average user

I finally saw the "screen door" effect yesterday that I've heard people talk about and it was when I was watching a YouTube video for Party Rock Anthem but when I messed with the screen brightness I was able to pretty much make it go away. I've compared the screen side by side with my Epic and with the brightness set high on both of them I really didn't see much of an issue with the Photon. I'm blown away with the performance and versatility of the Photon otherwise. I've got the car dock and the desktop dock and both make the features of the phone outstanding. I will probably be picking up another dock so I can have one at home and one at the office.
I do love amoled displays myself. So i could understand not likeing the photons display. Having a 4.3inch screen isnt enough anymore.

To all those experiencing issues with the PenTile display, what is your display brightness set to?
While toying with a display model, the screendoor effect was extremely obvious to me. The brightness setting was 100%. I changed it to auto-adjust and that reduced the screendoor effect greatly. At that point, it was barely noticeable and only if I really searched for it.
Making that change made the Pentile display usable for me. To those seeing similar issues, try that out and report back if it does or does not work for you.

The pentile display is awful. Any colored straight line like the battery display will show noticeable pixels.
There is a reason samsung left pentile and samoled+ is an actual selling point.

You know the funny thing about your comment... is that did you know that Samsung OWNS Pentile? They bought them and their tech back in 2007.
Yeah, I think Samsung really hates them a lot too... uh huh...
My brother has the photon and I think the display is pretty decent. I'm not going to say it's amazing or better then my old epic but it is not as bad as people here are saying. I think some folks jumped in expecting a galaxy type display and were disappointed when it wasn't. That's my opinion anyways.

[Q] Is it xperia s worth the buy?

Hello,
I just want to get the opinions of all xperia users who would like to take the time to answer my question.
I currently have a samsung galaxy note and i stumbled across the xperia s via the smartwatcha and smart wireless headset pro (i have this ocd-ish problem where all of my gadgets need to have one brand primarily) and i was wondering what are the community's take on the phone?
I'll primarily be using it as a secondary phone if not become primarily as soon as i get tired of lugging my big ass Galaxy Note around.
There is just something alluring about its sharp minimalistic style not to mention having a hd bravia tv in the palm of my hand.
Anyways, back to my question: what are your general opinions of the phone? Good or bad i'd like to hear them all.
Its a good phone, I love the screen and the processor seems fast enough. My gripes with it are, I am not sure about the button placement. Also I am not a fan of the usb flap cover. The light bar is awesomeness though.
It's awesome. That's all.

It would be a great phone if it wasnt for that damn yellow tint!!

There's a few more threads about people on the fence with this phone around here somewhere. I imagine it may feel tiny though after lugging around a note .

i had sgs2

worth it ? yep
I came from a note as well although mine died
I love this phone, my only gripe is the lack of developers here on xda, most devs seem to goto Samsung or HTC. I actually don't know if that's a good or bad thing because Sony's UI is fantastic and so is the whole experience so rooting the phone isn't really worth it at this stage for me, whereas with the note I was flashing every other day and that wasn't necessarily a good thing.
I miss the big screen of the note but I sure don't miss the SAMOLED display and the bad placement of those capacitive buttons and also the power button. The other real bad thing I noticed when I came to the xperia was how badly the note handled itself under sunlight I could never make out what was displayed and had to use my other hand as shade which didn't improve it much and also adding to the already difficult handling. With the Sony there is zero problems under sunlight I was amazed. I've held the Sony directly in sunlight and still can see the screen at around 80% vision comparing to the notes 10% vision.
I paid 800AUD for the note in November and I just paid 420AUD for the xperia s just after they got released and personally it outperforms it in software and hardware.
Sony feels expensive in the hands yet its cheap, Samsung feels cheap yet its expensive.
Oh yeh one other thing I really hate is the flap covers for the USB I could understand if the phone lasted a week without charge but when you charge everyday its pointless and frustrating.

The Xperia S is a new phone, just give it some time and more devs will come to make roms and add-ons Most of them are just waiting for the ICS update I think
But the phone is really great Also love the fact Sony will give us 4.0.4 probably instead of 4.0.3 like most devices
Considering XperiaS to be my first dual core smartphone, it does its job pretty well. Superfast processing, loads of RAM,great camera on a phone.. Unlocked Bootloader on mine.. And ICS not that far away.. What more would you want?

It works just as any auto-adjust, it just isn't as drastic when it adjusts ( more adjusts in phases than the 'low light > omg my eyes!'). It adjusts how it should at night, and outside (even in the sun) it is the most visible and clear I have ever seen in a touchscreen phone, the clarity is really impressive.
I don't know why, but I guess since most people use the auto setting, they removed it? I dunno, but you can still disable it with a widget anyways, so it doesn't really matter

I did that, I played on the settings but no luck. The funny thing is that my Xperia S has 50% brightness, and it's more sharper, more realistic than the S3.
Man, I'm impressed with how many people that buy things without a LITTLE research.

Of course it's sharper. It's a smaller screen running a higher resolution (720p rgb stripe vs pentile).
I can't comment on the colours, but I've usually had my sgs 2 and 3 set to the 'movie' preset and colours are pretty decent.
I myself dislike the Xperia S's screen. There's just something about it that doesn't look very clear to me. But that's just my 2 cents

Well first of all I don't know why did you even buy a S3 if you have so much criticisms for it. You owned an Xperia S, which is a relative new phone, and you simply bought S3 when it came out. What does this tell us about you? That you know nuts about phone and when something screws up because you didn't do any research on it, you simply blame everyone else but yourself because you bought the phone on impulse, because of advertisements.
Everyone of us has our own preference. Your phone lags, that is probably because of the user, who is you. I rooted my S3, and even before I root, it doesn't even lag a second. And yes I used Xperia S before, I saw it in my face before deciding that it is not the phone for me and decided to go for S3.

Damn, so all those reviews about how quick the S3 is must have been paid for Samsung marketing.... We've all been duped!!

No more transparent bar in future phones :(

Is it true that after this years Xperia P, Xperia SL and Xperia U there will not be any further NXT series phones utilizing the transparent bar element?

Where did you read that? I would be very surprised if it's true - anyone who studied business knows this - you need USPs (unique selling points) to your products in a crowded market, and Sony's latest designs have been getting a lot of positive attention, not to mention great sales. I'd say it's working very well, and looks different. Why would they cut it out?
Better performance, maybe?

It is a very old info. Unless Sony decides to revive it at 2014, we won't have any. It's a great design, really, but they will stick to other designs.
"What really matters in this world, anyway?"
Matter of opinions, i think it's silly, and i find that design ugly tbh, best design ever is the arc design currently used in T V J.

I don't recall, exactly. But it was said by someone who has insiders on Sony. Read it on Esato or here, can't remember. It was said around after the U and a P launch.
"What really matters in this world, anyway?"
It is, admittedly, a pretty pointless feature or selling point, requiring more hardware bits and pieces, along with making the phone taller than it really would've been. I like it a lot myself, but when I excitedly told coworkers in my workplace it's one of the aesthetic reasons I like my Xperia S, all I've ever gotten were eye rolls and smirks. And I suppose if you look at the smart phone world overall, adding a light bar is not unlike people that stick lights, stickers, and other loud colorful mods on their imported cars. The effect is even worse with the Xperia P, with its multicolored light bar. It can be seen as not very tasteful, mature, or serious.

Pretty much all of them have iPhones, very few people have Android phones and they're all Samsungs. And yes all of the men want their phones plain, black, and simple, with a plain black case to go with it. I'm the exception that always tries to buy something a little more unique that I won't see every 50 feet. I do however opt for the black versions of phones myself so that I don't stick out too much. Most of the other guys are much older than me and corporate culture can be powerful thing.

P doesn't have multicolored light bar.
=(..Its their selling point for me at least..
Ditto, it's their selling point for me too.
The transparent bar is really what sets the NXT series apart from, well, every other smartphone out there. Most smartphones are basically just a slab with a screen, the transparent bar makes it unique and really makes it recognizable.
Kinda silly to get worked up to any degree over something so trivial.
The LED bar was the main reason I bought my U (well that and the price). *****ez love multicoloured LEDs.

I completely agree! Though, anyone who rolls their eyes at your phone probably aren't in a position to criticize - as you mention with modded cars, there will be something that they care about and add frills and whistles and lights when it suits them - clothes, a Macbook, jewellery etc.
Style rarely has function. But I think that it added a lot to their 2012 phones, it's a shame. I for one didn't want the usual, BLACK, rectagular phone...:victory:

Everytime I look at my Xperia S sitting on the table in the dark, I think of how damn good looking the phone is. The transparent bar is a really cool feature that sets it apart from other phones. Not to mention it is useful when it comes to displaying notifications. It saddens me the NXT line is probably going to be the only phone lineup with the feature. They could have made the phone shorter though by having the transparent bar be the bottom of the phone since the bottom cap really doesnt hold anything in it anyways.

It would have to have at least a really small bottom cap, as looks like the transparent strip looks a bit fragile, if it falls.

Style does have function. But such function is not quantifiable. Since people nowadays like to put numbers on EVERYTHING, it is not surprising that really good style/taste/etc.. is not popular anymore.
What's popular? Hardware bragging rights. Plenty of numbers there.

iOS 7

Since this is general, discuss.
I noticed a lot of things that are very similar to what android had 6+ months ago. Sbeam or their new "airdrop" being one of them. And I'm pretty sure their animated weather was taken from Sense.
Either way. Good refresh. iOS7=ICS/jellybean.

Wow, I didn't even know it was out. Dammit, I just updated my iPad which is a pita on a jail broken device.
Anyway, I'm not really a huge fan of iOS, in fact I kind of hate it. But the pictures look really nice. I definitely am seeing the android references. Particularly some sense 5 influence.
But yeah the camera looks just like the jb camera, multitasking is obviously android inspired, so is the keyboard, "control center," the new safari is also a direct rip off of chrome, etc.
Still no gesture typing.

Almost every single "new" feature in iOS 7, Android has had for a while. Also they managed to make an uglier UI than Touchwiz, bravo Apple.
I need to watch some videos on it but judging by the stills I've seen I'm not impressed. I despise iphones and can't really stand my fiances ipad 2. It just feels clunky next to my nexus 7 and all the various android phones I've had. I might enjoy an iPhone if they'd make them wider.

I have only looked at some of the pictures that have been posted on facebook, but thus far most of it looks like stuff I had on my RAZR a year and a half ago.
Looks interesting. Not an iFan at all, but like was posted above; Apple does make a pretty, albeit feature-lacking interface, and it does it well for the masses who don't want to be burdened down with silly things like choice. I work as a sysadmin/support desk person and have to support a lot of BYOD stuff, so I picked up an iPhone 4 for a ridiculously low price (guy wanted a 750gb data drive and so I traded straight up the other day.) Will be interested to see if iOS7 will be supported on the iPhone 4.
As much as I love my newly S-OFFed DNA, the screen on the iPhone is much more crisp and well-defined. Wish HTC would have made a slightly better display, but i can say that it's nice to have 1080 support!

I ended up with a couple iPhone 4s also, neither screen comes close to the DNA. I even prefer my gnex screen over them. Oddly they don't even match each other, I'm thinking one was a replacement at some point, its a little cooler then the other iPhone is. There's an app I use to watch movies and its really crappy on the iPhone screen, blacks blur together, brightness and contrast is lackluster, resolution isn't that great. To the point I use airpin to watch them on...my DNA or gnex.
Either we have very different tastes in screens, I have two crappy screens, or I'm spoiled by android screens, the DNA in particular.
It'll be fun to see how iOS 7 plays out, though I won't do it until at least a tether jailbreak.

From what i've seen on videos of iOS 7 , it's a win. I've been knocking the iphone/ipad since i jumped to Android for the Galaxy Fascinate. This update will resolve the main problem areas i've seen.
1) Crappy notifications, that can't be accessed from the lock screen. - FIXED.
2) powertools or some way to quickly get access to common settings. - FIXED.
3) Task manager that shows pics (like Android or WebOS) - FIXED.
4) Back button or swipe back(Windows) - FIXED.
5) Widgets - NO
...
There is still a long way to go for iOS, but this is a big step in the right direction;
It finally has android beam!!!!!
Its a major update for the people who use amd like it. My brother has a iphone4 and seems to like it.........I cant stand them.

Anyone see the new Mac pro? They didn't listen to the pro users at all. The specs are nice but there's no expandability... No pro tools HD cards, no cuda, no multiple hard drives, etc unless you want to plug in a bunch of different adapters and stuff to the thunderbolt ports. I guess I'll be sticking with hackintoshes for a while... On the other hand, osx 10.9 actually has some useful features, without adding any useless features.

Yeah I think the reason they were able to patent it is because i think it still transfers over WiFi, even though NFC initiates it. Still though, nothing new there... Wireless file transfers are old news. Is there even a current Apple device with NFC?

Yeah, I think it might be perception. I don't know how to describe it - side by side, the iPhone's display seems to have deeper blacks, and seems to have a sharper contrast. I agree the overall the DNA is a much better screen, but there's something that has a vaguely superior look to the iPhone's screen. Could just be the carefully designed graphics engineered by Apple to give the impression of a display better than it actually is, for all I know.

I don't know. It really is a personal issue. I don't like smaller screens to begin with but even back when it first came out the contrast seemed way out of whack for me and looked washed out to a point. Then again though color wise I am also in the minority that dislikes the super amoleds due to over saturation. Although the HTC Thunderbolt had its flaws I liked its screen for the time.
There is no doubt that the iPhone screen is nice. I love the way my DNA screen is but the iPhone screen is good too, just too small for my liking.

Yeah, I get that. I was always wowed by the Super AMOLEDs for exactly the reason that you don't like them, but I suppose if you're going for true color precision, Super AMOLED is probably not a very accurate means of display. Either way, no complaints here about my DNA's screen - I love it, just noticed a big difference between the two when I picked up that iPhone 4, and it kind of surprised me.
Dri94 - Cool. Looking forward to giving it a test drive when it becomes available.
Pio, I'll be looking forward to the untethered jailbreak as well. From what I understand, it very well could be pretty soon after iOS 7 is released, as long as at least one of the many recent exploits the devs have been hoarding will be applicable. I'd be really surprised if iOS7 turns out being a total rewrite. Keeping fingers crossed that they will still be building upon at least some of the iOS 6 framework.
