[Q] Band issue with Vodafone Suresignal - HD2 Windows Mobile 6.5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

At work we have a Vodafone SureSignal as the normal mobile reception is rubbish. SureSignal has been working fine for some months with all phones including my HD2, but the box packed up last week. We have been sent a new box which was not picking up my handset. I phoned Vodafone and was advised to change the band selection from 'Auto' to 'UMTS(2100+900)'. Sure enough my phone connected to the device.
However, I understood that that would mean it would only connect where there is a 3G signal, so I tried selecting GSM(900+1800)+UMTS(2100+900) and that worked. But now that doesn't work and I can only connect to the SureSignal by selecting UMTS band only.
Does this mean anything to anyone, and can anyone advise whether there is anything I can do that means I don't have to keep changing the band selection on my phone manually every time I enter / leave the office? Is the box not doing something which is why my phone isn't picking up the 3G signal (I have no problem with 3G elsewhere)?
Thanks.

HTC Hero 3G question

Hi,
I have a question about the 3g network. Well recently i tried connecting to vodafone and noticed that there is no 3g icon on the status bar unlike from the orange network. My question is that if there is no 3g icon, does this mean i do not have the 3 g coverage ? I tried connecting to the net, i put on the right settings APN, proxy.... but in vain. all i get is the message that i have to enable mobile connections which in fact is already enabled.
Can anyone here clear my mind please. thanks.
P.S I have no problems with the orange network. 3 g, Hspda everything works fine and fast.
You need to make sure you have a 3G SIM card for Vodafone. If you just pulled one out of an older phone (especially one that did not have 3G) then the SIM is probably only good for 2G (GSM/GPRS). The 2G and 3G SIM cards look identical, but they have different information on them.

for sure it is a 3g simcard. on other phones, coverage and data connection works fine but on the hero....
But on the Orange network are you not using an Orange SIM? And on the Vodafone network using a Vodafone SIM?
Only other thing I can think of is Vodafone don't have 3G coverage at the exact location you are trying?

well yes. i actually have two sims and 2 phones but i would have prefered to have the vodafone one on the hero. Vodafone do have the coverage cause my other phone do have the 3 g coverage.Cannot figure out where is the problem. Called the guys at vodafone and all they could tell me was that they do not have any settings for the phone, that they cannot help me cause they do not provide the pphone here.
Hmm....the APN setting and everything should be the same regardless of 2G or 3G data connectivity. Actually, that is something to check if you have not already. With the Vodafone SIM in your Hero when you go to Settings->Wireless Controls -> Mobile Network settings you might want to make sure "use only 2G networks" is not checked. Also make sure the Access Point Names is configured correctly. I don't know what they are for Vodafone, but a quick Google should tell you. Other than that, hmmm.........

Yep , i did everything right. still......
Try locking it in 3g mode. I have a rooted G1, you get to the menu by typing the following into the dialer:
*#4636#*
after entering that sequence it should goto a menu, pick the first item and scroll down and see if you can change from "CDMA preferred" to "CDMA only" or whatever your 3G equivalent is.
This is based off a G1 with a Hero ROM, so results may vary. Let me know if this works =)
Also make sure that you are switching over to the Vodafone APN settings. You can have the settings in correctly, but if you don't switch to that profile, then it will try using the Orange. This is the most common reason I have people in my store with data connection issues, they have the right settings, but didn't select the right profile.(I sell cell phone and cell phone accessories on a GSM network in the US, so I get a lot of unlocked phones in need of setup.)
Problem solved. A moderator could kindly please close this thread. thanks to all who helped. Cheers!!!

hi friend,
well there was nothing to fix as such. it was a misunderstanding.
One thing i came to know is that 3g will appear only is there is a data connection ...and if your apn is set correctly.
and another thing that was resolved is that htc hero cannot connect to vodafone live here in romania because it is only possible through wap bla bla bla a lot of crap.
This was the answer of vodafone representant: For the moment, the service vodafone live we provide cannot be accessed through new handsets with new browsers such as n97,iphone htc magic...

[Q] Lost all signal in Telus(Canadian company) after installing custom rom???

I lost all signal in my cell phone coverage. I cant call or sms anyone.
I installed the Amberhome Custom Rom v1.1 and all my signal's gone.
Does installing a custom rom screw up signal like this?
where are you located?
Canada, Ontario
Probably the same issue I had with the telus milestone.
When you flash a new rom, it doesn't have the right 3G settings for some reason. You'll need someone to send you those files.
If my theory is correct, your phone works with GSM but not 3G right now. Since Telus does not have any GSM network, it won't find any signal at all.
I'm going on theory here.
Here's the info from the milestone thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734802
Radio Band Requirements for different countries
Some countries require the original 3G files of your current ROM to work ie. Canada, Brazil, Venezuela, Germany and some others countries uses a different band for 3G. If u dont backup the 4 original 3G Files and restore it over this nandroid once installed u gonna have poor signal, sms problems and HSDPA loss (even if u set apn and get conection its gonna be crappy one).
Files should be in the /system/etc/motorola/bp_nvm_default/ of your phone.
Files can only be copied from OpenRecovery , using adb shell.
Latest v0.5 has builtin install option using GScript , so you can get the radio replaced/installed. without update zip files.
You might check this thread , if a update-nosign.zip file exists for your model. which makes it easier for you to install.
Filenames are:
File_Audio
File_Audio2
File_GSM
File_Seem_Flex_Tables
generic_pds_init

EDIT: since these are motorola instructions, they probably wont help you, heh
Im not even using 3g i only have a prepaid account
So you're saying that I cant even use GSM? and that Telus has different GSM files than the rom?
Telus has no GSM/GPRS/EDGE coverge. It has an UMTS/WCDMA/HSPA network. However, unlike most of the world, it is on the 850 and 1900 MHz frequency bands instead of the more common 2100 MHz.
So it is possible that you flashed an update from the rest of the world that messed with your radio configuration.
I solved it
my phone mysteriously came with the "only 2g network" checked in the mobile network settings
i unchecked it and i have signal!
You can also set your phone to "WCDMA only" so that your phone doesn't try to connect to any GSM network.

Talk Mobile UK issues

I have had my TITAN since about a week after its release. At that time, I was using an O2 SIM card and everything was perfect and fine.
Around 4 weeks ago, I switched to Talk Mobile as my O2 contract was up and I got a deal from Talk Mobile. Since then, my phone has been a disaster - but I dont think the TITAN is at fault.
Around 50% of all my calls get dropped. Typically, when this happens, I will be connected to a 3G/HSDPA network with decent signal strength. The call will drop, I look at the phone and the signal has been lost entirely. Then the signal comes back but at GPRS or EDGE. I also often have a GPRS or EDGE connection in areas I know have strong 3G signal. The phone will transition to 3G eventually but it is a right pain.
I am already on my 2nd Talk Mobile SIM card and will try a 3rd this week. I have tried hard resetting my phone too. None of this has helped and the network have so far been typically useless in trying to help so I was wondering if any of the bright people on here would be able to help at all.
Many thanks
Sounds like a network issue, I am on Vodafone and have not had any problems with the handset. Make sure you have correct network settings installed on the Phone like APN's etc for Talk Mobile
Are they listed in htc connection setup? if so run it.
Talk mobile piggybacks vodafone iirc. i get this problem of switching 3g/edge/gprs with vodafone and talkmobile. with talkmobile if its a phone they don't sell they don't seem to have the settings for internet/mms etc. i usually have to manually input them.
If you need to manually input the Talkmobile settings, they're all on the website.
Click the second orange button 'Talkmobile phone settings' and they should be listed in there.
talkmobile.co.uk/get_your_settings.html
Thanks to all for the responses. When I run HTC Connection Setup app, there is a setting for Talk Mobile which I selected. Before doing that, I had no internet as obviously Windows Phone on its own doesnt have the right settings.
I will try manually entering the APN details next and see if that helps, but I dont think the APN affects voice calls if I am right?
dumped o2 and got my titan with vodaphone. No issues at all. Maybe you can Complain ?.

I am complaining vigorously
You've checked the aerial right? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18523952&postcount=12
I have a Talk Mobile sim (I got it as it was an offer - unlimited data) and a Vodafone sim. I have the same problems with Talk Mobile.
E.g. today I could only get Edge in London, and it seemed to be slower than basic G. When I swapped to Vodafone sim, in same area, suddenly good H signal, and fairly fast.
Also my pop3 email sometimes just errors with the Talk Mobile sim.
When I first got this TM sim in November it was great, downloaded no end of music and data on the Titan. Past few weeks it has been rubbish. I find calls are ok though.
Haven't got as far as complaining.... yet.... sorry have no answer but just to say that I don't think it's the Titan at fault.

[Q] NO 3G just Edge after dropping my phone

Hello Guys,
I am so desperate and frustrated, hope you can help me!
I dropped my phone from 2 stairways height.
It was working so i didnt care, but when I came home I noticed that I had no reception!
So as I have bought the phone from Germany Amazon.com and using it in Turkey, I had no warranty (even if it said I have!!) I decided to open my SGS2 (I9100) and see if anything was loose. I lifted the pins that touched the middle housing and now I have reception for phone calls all the time thanks God!
But I have no 3G at all, what happens is that is some times shows G in the status bar but never with a + sign near it. I saw + sign only once or twice in the last couple of months.
I called my operator which is Turkcell and they said that my contract is on 3G so no chance on that side. The wierd think is that my phone works with no other SIM card than mine which is 5 years old!
Can anybody help in order to solve my problem? Is there a diagnoses tool that will help me test my SGS2 in order to find the errors?
Thanks for reading guys, I'd really appreciate some help.
Hmm I'd check my APN settings first, make sure they didn't randomly change for some reason. If that failed, I'd factory reset. If that failed I'd flash a new firmware+kernel+modem, and check my APN settings again.
If that failed I'd open it up again, disconenct and clean the antenna wire, reattach and hope for the best.
If that failed I'd suss out what is the most appropriate looking part/area of parts to replace, then replace it with either that specific part, or a pre-assembled part with the surrounding parts attached.
If that didn't work I'd list it on ebay as clearly stating the phone is damaged, outlining the problem and sell it "for parts only". Lots of people pay good money for damaged smartphones. Just make sure any sensitive data/pictures etc have been securely removed before selling it.
The problem with reception was fixed with lifting the pins that touched the middle housing but, stand by :
I think I never had 3G since I bought that phone from Germany.
I feel so stupid!
I read through more and more and I found that article:
androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s/258859-how-enable-850mhz-3g-network-frequency-your-samsung-i9000-galaxy-s.html
It mentioned about the modem frequencies so gave it a try.
dialed the number * # * # 1 9 7 3 2 8 6 4 0 # * # * as stated and bingo!
My modem doesnt list GSM 2100 which is the deault frequency for 3G in Turkey!
But the article doesnt mention how I can ADD GSM 2100 from the menu that dialing that number took me.
Any help with this is appreciated!
First, that article is for am i9000, which is the S1. But that's largely irrelevant because the service menu code still works.
Second, this phone doesn't get GSM 2100. Never has. It gets WCDMA/UMTS 2100. GSM is for voice and 2g, WCDMA is for 3g/HSPA. Looks like you went to the wrong option. (GSM, instead of WCDMA, like the article said.)
Third, you CAN'T add frequencies, on that menu or otherwise.
Thanks.
So why is that my phone connects with only Edge?
Can this be a hardware problem where everything else works?
Maybe these setting are wrong? Or maybe it has a SIM lock? but it works with Turkcell
Is there any manual so that I can these settings_

You said above you don't think you ever had 3g. Maybe your carrier uses 3g frequencies this phone simply doesn't receive.
For example, this phone well never get a 3g signal on T-mobile USA's network, because the phone doesn't receive 1700 UMTS/WCDMA. This is one of two required bands on AWS... Which is the band T-mobile USA uses for 3g and "4g". If your carrier uses AWS for 3g, it won't work on their network either.

No this is not possible. Turkcell is using 2100 Hz.
I have bought 3 phones from amazon.de site. The other 2 phones are working.
I have to get my settings set properly, to make sure its a faulty product, so that I can return it.
There are menu options like HSPA revision, GCF, bank selection, service domain, acquisiton order etc..
Where can I find what they have to be?

In that case, just go back to that service menu, debug screen - phone control - network control - band selection. Make sure this is selected to automatic. You can make sure all available bands for this phone are selected on in combi bands. If they're all selected on, then it sounds like it could be a hardware issue.
EDIT to add: OR it could be a modem issue. Maybe try flashing different modems?
Turn back time and don't drop it

Cannot connect to network

Hi guys, noob here, just got my first android phone (been with blackberry till now).
I got a chinese X12 dual sim phone because i really needed only 1 phone (had to carry around 2 of them).
Phone works great, only problem is with the mobile networks. It can connect to GSM networks but it won't connect to a 3G network. The phone has 3G capabilities, 3G is enabled for the required sim, it finds the 3G network but it will not connect to it.
Sim works fine, had it in a Samsung i900 on 3G (WCDMA) - i live in Europe.
The thing that surprises me most is that the phone came with android 4.0 instead of the 2.3.6 it was advertised, could this be the problem?
Data Enabled ?! have access points ?!

yes, data is enabled on it, as for the access points it has them too (althought i am only trying to connect to the voice network, not the data network)
Tried one more thing which is wierd: the phone works ok with another 3G sim from another provider, but with the other sim it doesn't connect (but it finds the actual network). And the sim that won't connect works on my old phone (the samsung i900)
The first sim that works on 3G on my new phone is from Vodafone (and they have both GSM and WCDMA in my country), while the other sim that doesn't work is from a provider that only has 3G (for both voice and data).
Quick update:
i found out i also get an "error" : invalid IMEI for both sims - it was this way when i first got the phone...
really strange thing with this phone, in settings > about > it says android version 4.0 but when it starts it has the honeycomb logo...
would appreciate any help, if it's from the missing imei's that would be good (or bad, depending on how hard is that to fix).
You can call ##778# to get into those settings. But be careful, those can really screw up your phone if your not careful.
The only reason i can think of, is if your phone only supports certain UMTS bands, while your operator is using different ones. Check out this article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UMTS_frequency_bands.
For example, my previous phone HTS Nexus One came in two versions - one for ATT(UMTS 850/1900/2100) and another for T-Mobile(UMTS AWS/900/2100). Both were GSM, both had 3G, but 3G would not work on another operator.

phone has only WCDMA 3G network - i tried it on different carriers (on 3G and not GSM) and it works fine, connects to 3G, it just won't connect to this specific network (although it finds the network there, so i guess it has the hardware to connect to it).
could this be from the lack of the IMEI ?
FIXED !!!!
Got it fixed, the problem was with the missing IMEI codes, put them back in, works like a charm.
I used the tutorial here:
