x10. yay or nay - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello all.
I am posting this in hopes of getting a favorable response from all the good folks that use the x10(i).
i am seriously considering getting an x10i (either for myself or the wife) however i wanted to open a discussion on some things...
in the past i bought an x10i (about 4 or so months ago - maybe longer) and i didnt like it so much not because of the hardware but because android 1.6 was sooo awful -- slow, sluggish and damn problematic. well now we have 2.2 on other devices and the x10 has 2.1 which is great.
I currently own a galaxy s and i love it for the most part. it lacks some hardware features like a camera flash, real notification led and its just Samsung. not the best when it comes to these things.
se on the other hand has real great potential and makes great looking phones although sometimes careless.
i see the x10 as having the things the galaxy s lacks but main the inability to still have 2.2 or even 2.3 which the galaxy may get first.
other things like the type of processor... i havent got a x10 in my hand to compare to the galaxy but is the arm processor on the galaxy faster than the qualcomm on the x10?
any feedback / advise is greatly appreciated.
oh and before i forget. the x10 is really the only option IF the purchase decision is made. the x10 i can get for $500 ... cant afford another galaxy s for $700. so its either x10 or nothing.

No.. no and no again.
The x10 has many bugs and faults.
The most common problem is hearing other ppl speak in a phone call.

YAY !!!!!!!!!
i know there are a lot of people ready to say this phone sucks, but as with any other android phone, if you tweak it enough, it's a great phone.
some days i get up to 48 hours of usage and some days i get 1 day.
there are times when it's slow, but if you close some of the running tasks it's great.
and this is the case with any other android phone.
also people complain about it not having 2.2.x but hey, i use it enough to say that does not matter.
IT DOES NOT HAVE MULTI TOUCH, so if you are the type that plays a lot of games, you might miss out on the ones that need multi touch.
just a few of my thoughts

48 hours of standby and 8 hours of usage...
Also multi touch allows you to type much faster.

In reference to the multi-touch. isn't that a promised update? and hardly have i found a game that really uses multi-touch ...
i realize that 2.2 has some improvements -- also SE has capped the frame rate at 30 for what-ever-reason so it may not feel as quick as the galaxyS. but whatever. 2.2 or 2.1 as long as they sort of keep up and not keep us in the 1.6 days!
i am considering getting it anyhow and probably handing the galaxyS to the wife.
this video shows good performance; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-zyb1Tnrjw

Also consider the fact that you need to send in the phone to a SE service center several times before they fix it.
As the first few times they will not even look at the phone.
They will just re-flash and send it back.
Also they are not enabling multitouch... they are enabling dual touch "it is very limited.

i must say something horrible that i never saw my self saying before as i have always been a htc and android lover.
Im going for iphone 4 now, i sold my x10i...
You know why? Its not for the estetics, of course the x10i i so damn beautiful but, i cant STAND that my dad has a iphone 3g, thats right the first facking iphone and his phone doesnt lag anywhere.
i can say what most android kids usually say: "Oh but i have 1000Mhz armz0r and bla.bla.bla" but almost every android phone LAGS. iphone doesnt...
So im gonna go for iphone 4 for a year and see if the android gets better. Then ill join the android train again.
was fun thou...
Dont like the idea that a phone "Can BE" better IF you tweak it and ladidaaaa. I want a fast phone from the start...

quoted for truth!

I would say get it if you're willing to spend some time tweaking the hell out of it. My phone is running better and smoother than all the desires and galaxies of my friends.
But honestly, don't ask in the x10 section. You'll almost definitely get a "get it" from most people since we're just not really neutral in our opinions. How could we be? It's the same in every section here on xda. Ask somewhere away from enthusiasts EXCEPT, like i said before, you're willing to spend time tweaking this device.

The new hardware generation is right around the corner. If I where you I would use the Galaxy a little liner and wait for the dual core devices for example.

[Q] X10 vs Galaxy S (Input for purchasing decision)

Hi guys,
If you have or have had the X10 aswell as the Samsung Galaxy S, please give me some feedback in this thread.
Thanx
- Martin
my advice x10 coz sony ericsson more trusted mark and not big different in specifications
regards
I took a look to the thread, and everybody is saying the Galaxy is way faster and 100 times better, so there is no point for us X10 user to go there and tell that the X10 is better. There are a lot of threads here about the X10 Vs. Samsung ,Desire etc. I choosed the X10 with the best build, design, and almost if not the same specs as the other phones around.(and multitouch is not an issue for me).
So choose what you like.
Being a thread in the Galaxy S forum, I am aware that people there might be a bit biased. However, I must say that the Samsung does feel snappier so apparantly the better hardware aren't just there to look good on the specs. The display also looks good but I'm a tad worried about the pixel density on the Samsung after being an X10 owner (which I still am, for that matter).
However, you don't get better tests than from people using it every day, so I was wanting to hear pros and cons from people who have or have had both devices.
- Martin
EDIT: In the other thread, I've made a list of what I think are the pros and cons of each phone. However, I've only read about the Galaxy S and spend a little time with one in a store.
I'd wait for the 2.1 upgrade and see how they compare then.... I'm anticipating some significantly noticeable improvements...
My contract ends on september the 26th, so I can't get the new phone until the day after. I hope the 2.1 update is release at least a week before that. The same goes for the 2.2 update for the Galaxy, which is to be released soon(ish) aswell.
Hi if you put the thread in galaxy s forum I'm sure you will get mainly positive answers. I have a galaxy s and I will just list what I think.
First the bad
GPS is currently not very good, sometimes it works well and usually gets a fix very quickly but all too often it will randomly put you facing the wrong way if you stop in a queue and sometimes will not get a signal or lose signal
The screen although perfect size and excellent multitouch response uses a strange subpixel layout which when you look closely you can see the individual leds this makes the text fuzzy when small and also makes edges fuzzy (most people don't seem to notice this but I look close at my screen)
no camera flash - night vision mode is good though and prob gives better pics of outdoor night images than most - not good for close/indoor night stuff
The good
Im not gonna say a lot here (I'm sure you have already heard loads) but I will say this is the fastest phone I have used, no other android I've used is as fast, good at playing games and general use. It's a nice size - seems small even though it has a large screen (which contary to what I say above is the best screen I have used on any phone - just wanted to let you know it is not perfect - all amoled screens seem to have that effect)
Another big plus is that it's just about the most popular android phone there is and likely to be very well supported by Samsung and all of us.
It also has a few bonuses which you are unlikely to see on most other phones (tv out, free good apps from samsung, dlna, wifi tethering etc)
As you can tell the galaxy isn't perfect but it's the one I waited for so that's where my vote lies (especially if like me you like to play a lot of games many of the best need multi touch)
still you may have different needs than me, I suggest reading all the reviews you can find and trying them out if you can (try gsmarena for reviews I find them nice and detailed and generally unbiased)
EDIT - Just looked at your other post and see you already have a x10, my advice then would be to wait for the 2.1 update coming soon and see what you think, unless you have lots of money or can do an exchange relatively cheap then you might just wanna do that. Otherwise you might wanna hold out and see if anything even better comes out soon, im thinking 4.3" super high res dual core or 2ghz I'm sure they can't be too far off and your x10 should do until they do

very unbiassed reply..i'd like you to wait for some time... and compare both phones with upgrades.. every device has its pros and cons.. so know what you want out of a device and make your decision. possibly by that time something better than these two may come out in the market... theres no ending for this..
Id have to say that if the Samsung S had a decent flash (why they wouldn't include one is crazy), i would be pretty tempted to jump ship. They've already ported CM6 to it so the guys at Cyanogen must think its a worth while device and there support would be good enough for me.
galaxy is way better in almost every way. co-worker has it. played with it and from the first few minutes i knew that the galaxy s was a better phone. no question.
and every phone that came out or recently came out this year is moving on to 2.2 or even to gingerbread. x10 only going to 2.1? while 2.1 is better than 1.6, i'm still a bit disappointed.
The news of a psp phone intrigues me. If you like games I'd wait to hear more about that.

I cant speak for the actual Galaxy S model but I did have the Captivate for 28 days. I loved the screen and it did play Asphalt HD very well. The GPS was mostly uses less and I wasnt crazy about the soft buttons. The lack of a camera led or notification led is a real bummer.
I have to be honest though. The Captivate was the buggiest Android (oem build) I have ever used. There are ways to "fix" some of the bugs but the GPS and shut down/reboot seem to persist.
Every phone has issues but the Captivate had a couple that I just couldnt live with.
The X10 has been a completely different experience for me. Very well built and very stable OS. I am not sure if this is thanks to AT&T having a newer build or not. I have no regrets with switching to the X10.

+1 The led light and the notification led are very important to me. I agree with everything naplesbill said. Just to add a few more things, the screen on the x10 i think produces more realistic colors and thats with 16k atm so should be even better with 2.1 and 16m also text is sharper on the x10 vs the galaxy so if you browse and read things alot that is somthing to consider. The x10 is very stable and no lag like the samsung, its very well build and its beautiful. Overall great powerfull stable phone with unique looks. X10 hasnt let me down.

[Q] Are you tired from all this Android mess?

Hi to all of you good people I am a person like most of you and I am tired from all this s..t. I started using Android like 5 months ago and I had almost most of the phones Nexus One, Mytouch 4G, Samsung Captivate, Htc G2, Dell Streak, Galaxy Tab and so on... and now Samsung Vibrant. Thats in 5 months, dont you guys think this is s..t? We are trying to find the perfect phone that evrything works perfect from camera, FFCamera, Video codec support and all the things u already know plus software updates that all the time is a mess. I dont know I'm already tired from all this bull s..t man. What u guys think???
I think if you feel that way you should go by an iPhone or a Blackberry
You had all those phones in 5 months? A different phone every 2.5 weeks? Sounds kind of ridiculous to me.. lol
No........

Are you really trying to win over a bunch of people to not only give up on the Vibrant in a Vibrant forum, but Android as a whole in a Vibrant forum? If you haven't found a ROM that does everything then stop flashing betas and experimentals. There's multiple ROMs with everything working, and unless you don't have a job or a life, some bugs that exist aren't even a big deal. You make it sound like every ROM is either missing texting or phone calls. Think about how much our phone has the ability to do and then imagine making a ROM and having to make sure EVERYTHING works, from a setting menu FC to a data connection.
Android has climbed to the leader in smartphone preference in the U.S., you're alone on this one bud. If you've had that many devices, and couldn't manage to have one operate in a stable manner, then you are most definitely doing something wrong. And why all those phones, like, a captivate and a vibrant? did you even understand that those are pretty much the same thing? different carriers? that could be a problem right there. It's posts like these that make it so hard not to verbally assault you with my keyboard.
If you went through half a dozen phones in 5 months and still not satisfied, chances are it's not the phones that are the problem.

You bought and (I'm guessing) sold seven android devices in five months?? Sorry brother but I'm not buying that line of bull.
My guess is that you are an Apple fanboy that came over here to ruffle some feathers. You clearly have a lot of time on your hands.
BTW, all of the phones you list are very high-quality devices capable of performing at the highest level of what is available to smartphone consumers. I'd love to know how each phone failed to meet your exacting personal standard?

Everything you list here is either A) subjective or B) a hardware/carrier issue. None of it is an indictment of Android as an operating system. One of the beauties of the Android OS is that it is available on many different phones (with varying hardware configurations) on many different carriers.
But I don't think you're really interested in all that.
ok try to defend it pure android? its beautiful that nexus one's screen is non responsive. and nexus s is a joke wit low def video and no sd support thats beautiful?

Then I don't know what to tell you man. Take your money and buy a phone that is to your liking on whatever platform you wish. What exactly is this thread about anyway?? What answer are you looking for??
Deleted, not even worth it.
i just wanted to know if anyone is getting tired from all this that google has to make a one perfect device with everything so it works with the android software that they made... am i wrong?? dont u guys thing Google supouse to do that? they have the money and the software they just have to make the hardware that goes with it.
Google makes money from android now they shuld invest in makeing a perfect device.

Have you ever desired a phone as much as the SGS2?

I myself can say: I never have.
This phone does seem to have less to none downsides, I heard reviewers complaining about the backcover of the phone, a missing camera button and the Samsung hubs being messy (mainly the social hub which I'm looking forward to, as I like it being all-in-one).
On the other half the advantages:
1. Huge 4,3'' Screen
2. Super AMOLED Plus (less energy consumption, more subpixels (= sharper), better colors)
3. 1,2 GHz Dual Core processor (less battery consumption, more power, great overall performance, ability to record and play 1080p videos and 720p flash content in the browser.
4. Android 2.3.3; great stability and a zillion apps. Nothing more to say.
5. The phone's design. I personally like it.
6. It's a super leightweight, you won't even notice holding it in your hand.
7. Huge internal storage (16/32gb and the support of up to 32gb SDHC
8. Touch Wiz 4.0
9. AllShare
10. 8MP Cam and 1080p recording
11. NFC (not available in every region)
12. On device encryption (imporant for business people)
13. Other technologies for business people (Cisco stuff, VPN and similar things)
14. Multimedia monster (plays almost every file you can imagine)
15 - 45634562475. All the things I didn't mention
I'm getting this phone the moment it's available in my country, no matter what, this is my personal phone of the year, I check all relevant pages daily to get all the news about this phone, kinda addicted I guess but it's very hard to resist this beautiful phone !
Anybody feeling the same ?
same goes for me, every delay is such pain in the ass.
i cant remember when i had the urge to own something so bad like this beast.

I felt this way while waiting for my motorcycle to be delivered...
Now Waiting for this phone is crazy... I hate the rumor mill of delays, it kills you then you get some joe schmoe saying, it was unconfirmed and it all dies down.
This phone looks really good specs wise and reviews have done it justice.
Well, I was eager ALMOST as much before my HTC HD2 was delivered ...........
Since the HD2 disappointed me somewhat I deeply hope the S2 will make it up ..............
The other phone which I anticipated so much was infact the HD2. That supermonster of a phone, after two years, is still a monster. The only phone that can dual-boot Android and WP7.

Hater, much?
The poll is obviously for fun aswell as the "15 - 45634562475."-stuff. Though I expect people who visit this subforum to be interested in the SGS2. Why not hype the phone abit that we're all waiting for? You can still present your opinion about the phone in this thread as I don't care if negative or positive but if you're just whining about others liking the phone then this is certainly the wrong area for you to be at.
Btw your critizising and whining makes YOU look like a 12 year old. Then again I'd like to know what you encounter to my "halfassed list". Bring it hater, bring it !
And yes, I love every aspect of this phone. If you're going from Samsung I8910HD to SGS2 this is a huge overall improvement, and there are people out there who switch from phones less good than my OHD, you should be able to imagine that those people really look forward to this phone.

I'm upgrading from a Sanyo SCP-8400 to the SGS2. You won't believe just how much I'm looking forward to this phone!!!
To answer the original question - there has never been a phone I've wanted more than this one. I was about to get an SGS when this was announced. There was plenty of debate before I picked that ahead of it's peers. Not so this time. There are no close seconds, no runner-ups, no debating among features to see which I want. Anything else would be a compromise.
No, I've never been this eager to get a phone. I haven't really anticipated the release of a phone as much as have videogame stuff. I hope that we'll see a released date soon, and then I can mark it on my calendar
I'm going to be upgrading from an HTC Magic.
I was really excited about the atrix and xoom but this phone is just great
I've never wanted something so badly as this phone
Its just f&$kng awesome
Every time I feel like settling for another phone I repeat to myself "Good comes to those who wait" and hopefully a good outcome will come for all of us soon.
Especially you UK guys

WTF! I am upgrading from a HTC Touch Pro which really sucks with its resistive touch sreen compared to the one from SGSII!
btt: I check this forum and the google news search every day! There never was a phone which I so hardly wanted to OWN!
BUT, I'll wait for the first REAL Reviews from different Websites and from passionate objective users!
And btw I would prefer to pay only 500€ max.

I expect the price to go down to 500€ until release, some shops certainly will go down but then again I prefer wellknown sellers like Amazon who offer good service in case of warranty and return, i wonder if they would go down to something like 499,- aswell if another shop does (in the last 30 days or so the price went from 599,- to 548,50 which is the right direction but hopefully not all).
Oh and to the Sanyo SCP-8400 - Guy:

How will a ROM create a hardware camera button?
I was eager as much before mysamsung omnia hd was delivered ........... and it proved a real beast. an unbelievable phone, with not even a single drawback, expecting the same from s2

[Q] If 2.4 comes out in the summer?angry at Sony Ericsson Please read Complaintthread

if the new version of gingerbread comes out, i doubt that the camera would have support on our x10s, i think that sony ericsson will just give up on developing the gingerbread for our devices, cause the apps would be out dated due to the only use of the new.apk files that will have new parsing ways due to the honeycomb app support, i bought my x10 outright for 700 bucks and i would be reallly pissed off if they delay the update to 2.3 as they did to 2.1 when 2.2 was already out, i paid for a high end device and the stopped supporting us untll we heard about the 2.3 generic update that we where receiving, im very angry with them for just leaving us in the dust, when the x8 even has more support than our devices, if this happens, i want the x10 community to make a complaint to make sure that sony ericsson never is allowed to make a nexus device cause it seems to me that they just screwed us over with the x10. and it seems to me when they released the neo, arc and play, that they are wanting something, and if their developers couldnt handle making a device with a single core processor, how are they gonna support a dual core processor in a phone, they screwed up once and if i dont get an update past 2.3 because they started off with an outdated software in the beginning, this phone seems to be just a problem device, and why should anyone support them in the future, lets make sure if that they cant handle our phone, that they cannot handle a developers phone. lets complain as a group to the google developers, cause this is ridiculous, expensive device, problems and hardships = me as a customer very angry at a company, disappointment in the past is always a bad rep for the company, i do believe that google pics their nexus devices with the amount of success with the phone and the arc was like the second gingerbread device released. so most to sell because its a pretty awesome phone, there trying to prove that they can do it, but not support a high end phone, us as the community of x10 owners, can do this if its big enough
jesus dude, that is one gigantic run on sentence...
The truth of the matter is that all things in the end die. The X10 has reached that point in the eyes of SE. Unfortunately, support for the X10 will be more than likely dead after the update. SE will be shifting focus on new phones and development. It is sad, but let's face it. Did SE continue updating the Xperia X1 after a year? Nope. I bought that thing for $800 and it broke 3 times on me in less than a year. Your $700 you used to buy the X10 was the price you paid to live on bleeding edge of fashion/technology. It is incredible that the X10 will even get 2.3 update. Also, do you know what is the difference between 2.4 and 2.3 is? Rumors are they are one and the same. With the Gingerbread update, our phones will be relevant for another 6months to a year (probably extended due to new custom roms). So in the end, be happy, enjoy the ride and get bigger better phone once it comes out.
i wanted a bigger phone, thats why i got the x10, the potentials of this device are endless. and with experimenting with the custom roms theres multiple problems. the number one problem is the camera, and then wlod reboots, i try to develop but i cant do it, i remember back in the days with my HTC Dream and Magic that they made them so customizable now sony wont even unlock our bootloaders. but they will unlock their new devices seems pointless, it would make life a whole lot easier if it was unlocked, but no we have to find different solutions, i wanted to keep this phone because it has a developers potential and in my opinion was one of the best phones at the time just before samsung released the galaxy s devices, in all of this, this phone had so much potential, and all that potential is down the drain

Yes, this is a high end device, but in the world of smartphones, nothing lasts forever. I'm actually very surprised we even received 2.3.3. If a smartphone is out today, by tomorrow it will be old news. This is the new generation of smartphones sadly.
im 16 give it up if you look at multiple devices, alot are still receiving updates like the galaxy s devices. they started off with 2.1 and they received froyo, man froyo is the bomb, its my favorite android yet, i even like it more than gingerbread cause i find it more cleaner, i like all of android, but i think my next choice wont be sony ericsson, probably a Motorola atrix cause that thing is purely amazing, just playing with one instore, it makes me drool. Motorola has a really good track record so i think that they will be the next nexus holders, they definatly will be the tablet developer device holder for the first one whatever they will call it, and if they can pull off a huge 10 inch qHD display. peace ipad 2 but then apple will come out with SUPER BIGMASSSIVE RETNA DISPLAY CAN YOU SEE THE TEXT CLEARLY APPLE falling behind slackers

The Retina Display is not as great as you think it is. You will only have no pixels when your letters are very tiny or pictures... I wouldn't buy for that a motorola. Ever a motorola or lg is never a motorola or lg again. Just suckish companies, no support and phones fail. My lg and motorola were in one month gone. My x10 is still looking very new after more then 7 months of heavy use!

I dunno. I think that I would go with a new Galaxy SII when it comes out on a ATT frequency. I almost bought a Galaxy the last time, but the ergonomics and the bad GPS kept me away but I hungered for the 16G internal storage and the 1G ram, which are worse shortcomings of the X10, IMHO. I'm on 2.1, and I'm awaiting GB, and we'll see how it goes. Can't be bothered changing roms every day/week. Even with my contacts backed up, the market remembering all the apps I had/have, it's too much of a PITA to keep screwing around with it.
The atrix has some bad tech reviews, but it's certainly a fantastic concept and the second time around, it will be much better (with a quad core ;-) ).

Your phone will be out of date....
Deal with it.
I think a lot of angst is created because of the 'mighty 1GHz' processor in the x10, people assume that is is nearly as fast as the current-gen snapdragons etc. It isn't. The graphics are sub-par and the memory is slow. Sure the x10 is fast and can keep up nicely with its own generation of devices but it is not 'new'.
Recently Google have been changing their attitude to releasing honeycomb to tablet manufacturers and guess what, many devices are not going to be compatible. Take the Advent Vega tablet, packing a first-gen Tegra 2 processor, its not going to be officially supported, so there will not be proper hardware acceleration for the interface and probably only sdk builds of honeycomb.
Dang...
Google are changing the way they release their operating systems and changing the requirements for manufacturers to get the latest official build of their software. This is going to help with fragmentation and give a more consistent experience across devices. They are also aiming for a longer release cycle on each version of android. As ice cream is going to be based heavily on honeycomb, I would think that Google would add similar restrictions and it is likely that the snapdragon in the x10 would not be supported, if so, neither would the nexus 1 or the desire etc.
There is nothing Sony can do about this, sure they made mistakes with the x10, but hey, they have promised us gingerbread and have given us dual touch. If you look at the ark, play etc, SE seems to have taken alot of peoples views into account and have realised that if they don't give the absolute bleeding edge version of android people will whine and ***** that they don't have flash or apps2sd or the biggest release number. If you care, root, flash a rom, install apps2sd, whatever you want to do. If you care, you can do something about it.
And finally about the bootloader, the devs have found ways around it and are giving us fresh kernels, I would not completely write off SE's argument that it is licensing issues as these can make a huge difference and complicate the process - A process that is SE's porogative anyway. Even on my Nokia n800, one of the most open devices, Nokia had decided that it didn't want to pay the licence to Imagination Technologies for use of the PowerVR graphics on the SoC's it bought, hence, no graphics coprocessor...
I think Sony gets too much flak, sure it took ages for 2.1, and it is taking a while for gingerbread, but the phone works, solid as a rock in fact and it only crashes because I have seriously fk'd around with the settings, I can deal with that. My phone is out of date, but I don't care, I am a tinkerer and I can make it do everything I need, I am looking forward to gingerbread as I love the camera too much on stock, but I have jit, link2sd, barnacle wifi tether and all sorts of other mods. Gingerbread will be great, and will definitely tide me over to my next dual core Ice cream toting superphone..... when it comes out...

@tomh235, what a wonderful post man, u just truly explain what android is all about let me explain.
I was once an iphone fiend, stuck with my 3gs, jailbreaked, and it bricked due to mods that i've tryed, I wanted to upgrade to the iphone 4 and couldn't cuz it was reserved for new customers first, I tryied through many ways and it was almost like the contract I was about 2 sign was saying "in exchange of your unborn child". People around me was trying everything 2 get an iphone 4 and when I had a look at this, I was like that's it, what else. The seller was saying "its a revolution in the smartphone world and bla bla bla". When I look at the androids, he couldn't tell me nothing about it. So I dare myself with the xperia x10. I should have read more about the phone before getting one though lol but Ive learned so much bout computers, technology, linux, im no dev but a good tester/user. I will never go back to an iphone promise.
What i wanna send as a statement is that if you are the kind of people that always go to your carrier cuz your phone isn't snappy from time to time or really need regular updates and baby like support, stick to your iOs that works good for most people. If your the kind of user that isn't scare of tweaking, searching for mods, get an android. There so much different phones, OS, features, roms. Nothing 2 bored about. Xperia x10 is okay on froyo, waiting for official gingerbread, no regret about my 3GS that i replaced the screen and sold it 400$ loll iphone fiends.

[Q] Anyone coming from an iPhone? I need advice

Hi everyone! First post so, very excited! This may be a bit long so please, bear with me.
I've been an iphone user for over three years. Love the thing, even though I'm still with a 3GS. It's time to upgrade, either by picking up the next iphone, or by switching to an Android flagship. My closest contact with an android phone has been with my sisters Galaxy mini, which I find unimpressive.
Anyway, I'm growing a bit tired of the lack of innovation from Apple. My current iOS experience is pretty much the same from 3 years ago and, to my eyes, Android has been speeding up incredibly. Apple is just sitting on its sucess, which I find annoying. And that's why I'm considering getting an S3. I know I'll be getting a new phone soon and it depends a lot on what is going to happen at the 11th of this month, with Apple's keynote. They should announce iOS6 and, if nothing seriously impressive comes out of it, then it's it, I'm selling all my istuff (ipad included) and I'm going Android!
That said, if Apple fails me (which I'm pretty sure it will), I'm gonna buy an S3. What I'd like to hear from you ios-to-android switchers is how is it going? Is that a meaningful improvement or just a different way to do the same awesome stuff? Are the apps equally better? Can I do the same stuff that I do on my iphone, or maybe even more?
Am I going to miss iOS? If so, what I'm going to miss more?
And finally, a more general question: Is the S3 going to last at least 2 years? I like to spend money on something as future-proof as it gets.
So yeah, this are my doubts. I'd say there's a 80% likelihood of me going Android in the next few weeks, so I need to get informed. Please inform me!
Cheers! And forgive my average English.
If you still holding on to 3gs, you will have the sgs3 with you when you get buried. It's a massive upgrade from that phone. My suggestions is that you get around and try one. The screen will be enormous when you are used to 3.5" . I always loved my iphone and it's a great phone but it's boring frankly . When your phone gets outdated and no more upgrades is available : you root. Cyanogenmod will make sure you are running latest software some years more.
I switched to an iphone 4 from my galaxy s2 because I missed the "smoothnes" but to my surprise it wasn't that smooth as I remembered .my sgs2 made stuff happen both smoother and faster so I had to switch back again, the sgs2 is a beast and still pretty future proof and sgs3 is that phone on steroids . I have had a lot of phones and tried a lot of different os, knowing now that no phone is perfect or close to bug free..this phone comes pretty ****ing close. It's The Hulk after you've made him really upset..like banging his girlfriend kind of upset.
Last, I welcome you to the world of android. Where you customize the phone to your needs, not settle or accept because it's restrictions .

You may miss iOS... all depends on what you are like as a person. Some people want to have a screen displaying a bunch of apps which they can launch. Simple, no fuss and it gets the job done. For simplicity iOS is a real winner.
Android has more options as I am sure you have heard. I look at this as a massive upside, others (like my mum) don't.
Whether you will miss iOS or not is such a personal thing that only you will know.
I've switched from the iPhone 3GS to the s3. Absolutely loving the android experience so far. I used iPhones since they were first released, and so this is my first Android experience.
Of course there is a learning curve, like with any new operating system. Everyday I'm finding out new things about what my phone can do. But as long as you have some patience the experience can be positive, exploratative one, rather than a negative, and frustrating one.
The only other thing I can think to mention is size. Handling the s3, after having only iPhones in the past is quite hilarious. It took me a while to adapt to the larger size, at first it felt quite cumbersome. However once your used to it, it's a pleasure to handle. I now get a rye smile on my face when I handle my wife's iPhone, because it feels so small and my hand looks giant.
To give you an impression on my current opinion here is my Facebook status from earlier today:
"apple will have to do something VERY special to ever make me use an iPhone ever again. So impressed with my S3 and a. Droid OS".
Hope this helps.

You should find out what the return policy is with your provider. As an example Verizon in the US has a no questions asked 14 day return policy and cancellation of contract. If it's the same with whomever you're with that should be plenty of time to figure out what you want.
I can't answer most of your questions (it's down to taste, after all), but as for this one:

For example, on stock android you can already use a custom keyboard (swype, swiftkey come to mind) or a custom launcher (e.g. launcher7 for a windows 7 type "home screen", apex or nova for general improvements on stock, or even espier launcher for an iphone clone). And, of course, you can side-load apps.
With a rooted android, you can replace the rom/kernel itself.

For sure you wouldn't miss anything with regards to the Apps. All are Same and will appear better in a bigger HD Screen.
You can never go back to iOS after using a great Android device unless you are forced to like I am from my work place phone with iP4S. Galaxy mini doesn't do any justice compared to any device ! Do not consider it.
Regarding the resale value of the device after its life time is a tricky question in current situation. Truly speaking a used 3GS now sells 2 times than the SGS and same goes with the iPhone 4 vs SGS2, at-least in Singapore its like that.
I currently use SGS3 and iP4S (Work Phone) and I can understand what you are saying, apple is still stuck with the same UI for the last half a decade and things are too complicated to do with iOS, example to switch on or off wifi/bluetooth /etc.. it takes like 7+ clicks and few scrolls which can be done in just 1 scroll and 1 click in Android ! Its that simple.
For sure you will be pleased and love Android like I did when I came from iOS. Point to be noted is, my complain is only about the ****ty iOS that is stuck with the same look and feel for long long time and not about the Hardware . I still consider iPhone 4/4S hardware as one of the best leaving out the tiny display
My Advice : Do not get addicted to flash ROMs every other day and become a flasaholic. The Stock ROM in SGS3 is super perfect that can run just fine any time than its predecessors.
Welcome to Android.
Well i went from an iPhone4 (32GB) to a Samsung Galaxy S3 and i must admit that i didn't do a bad choice it is so much better compared to the iPhone, i think it is a great upgrade had mine for 4 days soon and i love it.
Backsides of apple:
Unable to use the devide freely as you like to, and it is a closed operation system
to gain something out of it you have to jailbreak it, hated the iTuned and everything that begun with iXXXXX nothing bad about mac computers but that phone sucks.
What i liked about apple: was back in 2010 the retina display which still is pretty amazing and how many apps there is availble but it stops there.
The Samsung:
I like: the big 1280x720 hd ready amoled display and the real BLACK! i like the quick response from the UI (compared to the slow/lagging iPhone especially if you had 1500 pics/videos it got so slow) the freedom of being able to use the phone more freely and it is open source operation system and loads more it is worth every single $
Dislike: The limitations of the camera app, like below 15% you can not start the camera and if your in a call which i am often longer then 15-30min then you might
want to be able to use the camera if im in a call.
And what i hated the most about the iPhone is the antennas on the outside that meant if i held the phone in my left hand i lost the reception! and real issues with bluetooth.
So go and grab your self a new samsung handset you will not get disappointed!
This is some superb feedback, thank you very much!

It does help, thank you. Some days ago I went to a phone shop to see some Android devices up close and specially to check if the bigger size would be a problem. Well, it's not. I have big hands and only the Galaxy Note felt cumbersome. Everything else was fine, specially the HTC One X whose size I find perfect to my hands. The S3 seems to be about the same.

This is some excellent advice that I hadn't remembered before. After reading your post I checked with my provider and was happy to know that they have a 30 day return policy, no questions asked. This is fantastic for someone like me, who needs to use the device for some time in order to know if it's the right thing for me. Thanks!

Rooting is something I may look into in the future. I feel like I need to get my head around the android for a few months, and then... puf, maybe root the thing to get even more out of it. My iphone knows I did this very same thing with it.

Thanks! About the apps, I always had this feeling that android apps were ugly. Now I'm starting to see some truly beautifully designed apps, which makes me happy. I like pretty stuff.
The resale value is one thing I always liked about Apple. Somehow I can sell my current used iphone for about 200€, when I payed 250€ for it 18 months ago, used but as new.

I'm totally with you on this, I hate the damn itunes. It may be great on macs, but on windows? jeez, stupid, ugly thing. If I'm really going Android, something I'm really going to be happy about is finally getting rid of itunes.
This feedback has been great and I have to thank you all. I'd like to hear some negative feedback, something like "oh I had an iphone and got an S3 and I don't like it because of this and that" but, given how this is an android forum, I may not get something like that.
Anyway, for those who are interested, I'll make my decision on the 11th and, upon finally making the purchase, I'll keep updating this topic with my personal experiences. I feel it may be useful for the potential ios-traitors... which is something I am about to become. ahah
